Research on Strength, Alkali-Silica Reaction and Abrasion Resistance of Concr...Salih Taner YILDIRIM
In this study, the effects on the mechanical and durability properties of concrete with
cathode ray tube glass sand (CRTS) obtained by recycling the screens of cathode ray tubes
(CRTs) were investigated. CRTS was used by the ratios of 5, 10, 15, and 20% in the
concrete. The unit weight, workability, water absorption, compressive strength, flexural
strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity, static and dynamic elastic moduli, abrasion resistance,
and alkali-silica reaction (ASR) expansion tests on the concrete were examined. The use of
CRTS improved specific properties of concrete according to the fraction of glass aggregate
used between 0 and 20%. Plain concrete (P) and CRTS of 5% in concrete gave better results
in terms of mechanical properties. Use of CRTS above 5% in concrete declined the
mechanical properties but on the 90th day, CRTS concrete reduced the difference. CRTS
up to 20% in concrete especially improved abrasion resistance in comparison to P without
CRTS; furthermore, this addition did not increase ASR expansion to a deleterious level.

CHALLENGES FOR SUCCESSFUL COMMERCIALISATION OF FLY ASH - GGBS GEOPOLYMER BINDERIAEME Publication
Traditionally used Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is becoming less appealing in the construction field due to some major drawbacks such as depletion of natural resources at a faster pace, high demand for Embodied Energy (EE) during its manufacture and massive Embodied CO2 emission (ECO2e) to the environment. In pursuit for an alternative to OPC based concrete, alkaline activated alumino-silicate based inorganic polymer binders, popularly known as geopolymer binders, are being considered as a more sustainable solution. Since 1970’s geopolymer binders are used in combination with OPC as partial substitutes but it has not yet gained momentum as a commercially viable alternative to completely substitute OPC for every application. Obstacles in the commercialization of Geopolymer concrete (GPC) are many even though it has several engineering merits and plays a role in recycling industrial waste. In this short communication, we have made every attempt to address these limitations based on our practical experience. We have also made some recommendations to overcome those barriers.
Partial replacement of fine aggregrate and cement in paver blocks using waste...vivatechijri
A parametric experimental study for producing paving blocks using fine and coarse waste glass is
presented. Some of the physical and mechanical properties of paving blocks having various levels of fine glass
(FG) and coarse glass (CG) replacements with fine aggregate (FA) are investigated. The test results show that the
replacement of FG by FA at level of 20% by weight has a significant effect on the compressive strength, flexural
strength, splitting tensile strength and abrasion resistance of the paving blocks as compared with the control
sample because of pozolanic nature of FG. The compressive strength, flexural strength, splitting tensile strength
and abrasion resistance of the paving block samples in the FG replacement level of 20% are 69%, 90%, 47%
and15 % higher as compared with the control sample respectively.
Cement is the world's most used construction binder material. Cement production emits large amounts of CO2 and consumes significant amount of energy. As a result, it is necessary to find a new concrete material to replace traditional Portland cement concrete, which is environmentally stressful, yet provides an effective building material. Geopolymer is an emerging alternative binder to Portland cement for making concrete. Geopolymer concrete is principally produced by utilizing industrial by-product materials such as fly ash, blast furnace slag, and other aluminosilicate materials. RCC structures undergo serious durability problems like spalling, erosion, wear, cracking, corrosion etc. years after the construction. Repair to damaged concrete are important not only to ensure the planned useful life, but also to provide good performance and security. This paper review the literature related to the studies conducted on geopolymer and repair materials.
Indian construction industry is growing at a rate of 9.2% as against the world average of 5.5%.
Construction by nature is not an eco-friendly activity. Construction, renovation and demolition activities lead to the formation of waste.
Growth in construction activities generates construction waste which is fast becoming a serious environmental problem with deadly
consequences. Most of the construction and demolition, waste in our country are not recycled but end up in landfills occupying valuable
land.
The promotion of environmental management and the mission of sustainable development have exerted the pressure demanding for
the adoption of proper methods to protect the environment across all industries including construction.
Construction waste recycling reduces the demand up on new resources. Cuts down the cost and effort of transport and production. Use
waste which would otherwise be lost to land fill sites.
Durability Study on Self Compacting Concrete with Mineral Admixtureijtsrd
Self compacting concrete can be placed and compacted under its own weight without any vibration and without segregation or bleeding. The use of mineral admixture such as fly ash, GGBS, etc. as partial replacement of cement in SCC can bring down cost. The use of industrial waste such as fly ash, GGBS, etc in the binder of concrete reduces the storage, disposal and environmental problems. The most beneficial property with M SAND addition to the concrete in the hardened state are the tensile strength, impact strength, the toughness and the energy absorption capacity. In the present study the mix design for M50 grade SCC was first carried out in accordance with EFNARC guidelines. The cement will be replaced with GGBS and fine aggregate get replaced with manufacturing sand Test such as slump flow,V funnel were carried out on fresh concrete and the optimum dosage of super plasticizer was found and cubes were cast for 7,28,56 days for the mix ratio 1 1.40 1.27 0.34. The influence of GGBS on the workability, mechanical strength and durability aspects like water absorption test, sulphate attack test, acid resistance test, rapid chloride penetration test , sorptivity test , linear polarization resistivity test and alkalinity test of self compacting concrete are studied. CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
Work done in cooperation with James Malloy and David Moelling from Tetra Engineering.
