This document summarizes a study that used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to analyze flow parameters and pressure distribution in a Y-shaped pipe junction with varying branch angles. A 3D model of the Y-junction was created and meshed in Hypermesh. CFD simulations were run in ANSYS Fluent for branch angles of 45, 60, 90 and 180 degrees. Results showed pressure drop was highest for 45 degrees due to more turbulence. Pressure distribution at outlets was most uniform for 45 degrees. Uneven mass flow distribution increased with branch angle. Dynamic pressure, velocity, and turbulence kinetic energy plots supported findings that lower branch angles resulted in more uniform flow.
