This document summarizes a numerical study on jet impingement cooling of cylindrical surfaces. Jet impingement exhibits non-uniform heat transfer on cylinders, with maximum heat transfer at the jet stagnation zone and local maxima/minima occurring along the circumference due to transition between laminar and turbulent flow. Parameters studied include jet Reynolds number and cylinder to jet diameter ratio. Results for smooth cylinders matched literature. Heat transfer decreases with Reynolds number from 100 to 1000 but increases beyond 1000. The study aims to address gaps in understanding jet impingement cooling effects on cylinders.
Numerical Predictions of Enhanced Impingement Jet Cooling with Ribs and Pins ...AZOJETE UNIMAID
Numerical calculations relevant to gas turbine internal wall heat transfer cooling were conducted using conjugate heat transfer (CHT) computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) commercial codes. The CHT CFD predictions were carried out for impingement heat transfer with different types of obstacle walls (fins) on the target surfaces. A 10 × 10 row of impingement air jet holes (or hole density n of 4306 m-2) was used, which gives ten rows of holes in the cross-flow direction and only one heat transfer enhancement obstacle per impingement jet was investigated. Previously, four different shaped obstacles were investigated experimentally and were used to validate the present predictions. The obstacle walls, which were equally spaced on the centreline between each impingement jet are of the co-flow and cross-flow configurations. The impingement jet pitch X to diameter D, X/D and gap Z to diameter, Z/D ratios were kept constant at 4.66 and 3.06 for X, Z and D of 15.24, 10.00 and 3.27 mm, respectively. The obstacles investigated were ribs and rectangular pin-fins shapes, using two obstacles height H to diameter, H/D ratio of 1.38 and 2.45. Computations were carried out for three different mass flux G of 1.08, 1.48 and 1.94 kg/sm2. Relative pressure loss ∆P/P and surface average heat transfer coefficient (HTC) h predictions for the range of G, showed good agreement with the experimental results. The prediction also reveals that obstacles not only increases the turbulent flows, but also takes away most of the cooling heat transfer that produces the regions with highest thermal gradients. It also reduces the impingement gap downstream cross-flow.

The results show that, with proper selection of physical parameters, significant heat transfer
enhancements and pressure drop reductions can be achieved simultaneously with porous pin fins and
the overall heat transfer performances in porous pin fin channels are much better than those in
traditional solid pin fin channels. The effects of pore density are significant. As PPI increases, the
pressure drops and heat fluxes in porous pin fin channels increase while the overall heat transfer
efficiencies decrease and the maximal overall heat transfer efficiencies are obtained at PPI 20.
Furthermore, the effects of pin fin form are also remarkable. With the same physical parameters, the
overall heat transfer efficiencies in the long elliptic porous pin fin channels are the highest while they
are the lowest in the short elliptic porous pin fin channels

Numerical Analysis of Inlet Gas-Mixture Flow Rate Effects on Carbon Nanotube ...A Behzadmehr
The growth rate and uniformity of Carbon Nano Tubes (CNTs) based on Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)
technique is investigated by using a numerical model. In this reactor, inlet gas mixture, including xylene as
carbon source and mixture of argon and hydrogen as carrier gas enters into a horizontal CVD reactor at
atmospheric pressure. Based on the gas phase and surface reactions, released carbon atoms are grown as CNTs on the iron catalysts at the reactor hot walls. The effect of inlet gas-mixture flow rate, on CNTs growth rate and its uniformity is discussed. In addition the velocity and temperature profile and also species concentrations throughout the reactor are presented.
Experimental Analysis Of Heat Transfer From Square Perforated Fins In Stagger...IJERA Editor
This project gives the experimental analysis of heat transfer over a flat surface equipped with Square perforated
pin fins in staggered arrangement in a rectangular channel. The Fin dimensions are 100mm in height & 25mm in
width. The range of Reynolds number is fixed & about 13,500– 42,000, the clearance ratio (C/H) 0, 0.33 and 1,
the inter-fin spacing ratio (Sy /D) 1.208, 1.524, 1.944 and 3.417. Sy i.e. stream wise distance is varies and Sx i.e.
span wise distance is constant. The friction factor, enhancement efficiency and heat transfer correlate in
equations with each other. Here we are comparing Square pin fins with cylindrical pin fins. Staggered
arrangement and perforation will enhance the heat transfer rate. Clearance ratio and inter-fin spacing ratio affect
on Enhancement efficiency. Both lower clearance ratio and lower inter-fin spacing ratio and comparatively lower
Reynolds number give higher thermal performance. Friction factor & Nusselt number are Key parameter which
relates with efficiency enhancement and heat transfer rate.

In the present investigation the distribution of mean velocity are experimentally studied on three constant area
rectangular curved ducts with an aspect ratio of 2.4. First one is C-shape, second one is S-shape and third one
is a DS-shape duct. The experiment is carried out at mass averaged mean velocity of 40m/s for all the ducts.
The velocity distribution shows for C-duct, the bulk flow shifting from outer wall to the inner wall along the
flow passage and for S-duct, the bulk flow shifting from outer wall to the inner wall in the first half and from
inner wall to the outer wall in the second half along the flow passage of curved ducts are very instinct. Due to
the imbalance of centrifugal force and radial pressure gradient, secondary motions in the forms of counter
rotating vortices have been generated within both the curved duct. For DS-duct the velocity distributions shows
the Bulk of flow shifting from inner watt to outer wall in the first bend and third bend of the duct and outer wall
to inner wall in the second bend and forth bend of the duct along the flow passage is very instinct. Flow at end
of the DS-duct is purely uniform in nature due to non existence of secondary motion. The experimental results
then were numerically validated with the help of Fluent, which shows a good agreement between the
experimental and predicted results for all the ducts

Heat transfer enhancement through different circular diametrical dimple surfa...eSAT Journals
Abstract The prime objective of present work is to study experimentally the heat transfer enhancement through different circular diametrical dimple surfaces in longitudinal and lateral directions. In this paper horizontal rectangular plates of Stainless Steel and Galvanised Iron with different circular diametrical dimples (like 11mm , 14mm ) for in-line arrangements were studied in forced convection with varying laminar external flow condition. The various parameters considered for study are Reynolds Number, Nusselt number, Prandtl Number, Co-efficient of Friction, Heat transfer coefficient and heat transfer rate for a constant Prandtl number (0.698) It has been found that the heat transfer coefficient and heat transfer rate increases for various dimple surfaces as compared to plane surface. It has been also found that the heat transfer coefficient and heat transfer rate increases along longitudinal direction as compared to lateral direction. And it is seen that heat transfer rate is maximum for larger diameter (14mm) of dimple. For circular dimples, heat transfer enhancements (relative to a flat plate) were observed for Reynolds number range from 350 to 550. CFD Analysis of Plate Fin Tube Heat Exchanger for Various Fin InclinationsIJERA Editor
ANSYS Fluent software is used for three dimensional CFD simulations to investigate heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of six different fin angles with plain fin tube heat exchangers. The numerical simulation of the fin tube heat exchanger was performed by using a three dimensional numerical computation technique. Geometry of model is created and meshed by using ANSYS Workbench software. To solve the equation for the fluid flow and heat transfer analysis ANSYS FLUENT was used in the fin-tube heat exchanger. The fluid flow and heat transfer are simulated and result compared for both laminar and turbulent flow models k-epsilon and SST k-omega, with steady state solvers to calculate heat transfer, flow velocity and temperature fields of variable inclined fin angles (Ɵ = 00,100 , 200, 300, 400,500). Model is validate by comparing the simulated value of velocity, temperature and colburn factor with experimental and numerical results investigated by WANG [1] and GHORI KIRAR [10]. Reasonable agreement is found between the simulations and other results, and the ANSYS Fluent software is sufficient for simulating the flow fields in tube fin heat exchanger.
Thermal analysis of water cooled charge air cooler in turbo charged diesel en...eSAT Journals
Abstract
Air-cooled and water-cooled charge air coolers are used as applications in automobiles. The cooling media include engine’s
coolant, ambient air or any other external coolant source. Charge air cooler with offset strip fin geometry is chosen on both hot
and cold sides with fin thickness 0.15 mm, length 3.2 mm, height 5.2 mm and frequency of 18 fins per inch. The flow rate on hot
side is taken as 0.3 kg/s and cold side as 2 kg/s for air-cooled charge air cooler and for water-cooled charge air cooler on hot
side it is 0.3 kg/s and cold side is 0.265 kg/s with inlet temperature on hot side 160 oC and cold side 40 oC. With the above
conditions, performance evaluation is done on both charge air coolers. Having found water-cooled charge air cooler is having
higher effectiveness than air-cooled type, performance evaluation is carried out on water-cooled charge air cooler with varying
mass flow rates on hot side from 0.1 to 0.6 kg/s and keeping cold fluid rate constant at 0.265 kg/s and the outputs obtained are
Colburn-j factor, Fanning friction factor, heat transfer coefficient, overall heat transfer coefficient and effectiveness of heat
exchanger. From the obtained results, graphs are drawn to assess the performance of the water charge air cooler.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
