Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

3. 1.0 INTRODUCTION
An internship programme is where a student is able to gain work experience which cannot
be found in a school. Taylor’s University has provided me with a two-month internship
programme to learn about practical skills that cannot be taught. However, this is not the
first internship I had. I have had a couple of self-initiated internships of my own during the
semester breaks, each with a different purpose. I am happy that this programme led me
to learn totally different things.
NVT Architects was the architectural firm that accepted me and I am grateful that they
did. I was able to work under not one, but two registered architects, Ar. Voon and Ar.
Steven Thang. Also, because the firm is on a smaller scale than my previous internships,
I was able to work closely with all the members of the team which enables me to
understand the project more comprehensively.
During my previous internship, I kept rotating across different projects, filling the gap of
unfinished work. I admit that I had learnt and improved various skills from that, however
it only makes me a very good skill worker. In NVT, Mr. Voon allowed me to commit into a
single project while doing several secondary projects. Thus, a hierarchy was created
towards which projects I had to prioritise in. Therefore, I was able grasp the process of a
project to a finer degree.
Not only that, I was given a chance to hone my social skills and acquire information when
I learn from my coworkers during breaks as well as discovering new knowledge when
conversing with various consultants after site meetings. Most surprisingly is that Mr.
Steven is a construction advisor that helps lawyers on a case, legal matters brought a
whole new meaning to me after I conversed with him.
4. 2.0 PROJECTS INVOLVED
2.1 CONFUCIAN SCHOOL NEW BUILDING BLOCK
Confucian Private Secondary School was replacing one of its older block with a 12-storey
building which consists of an auditorium, a basketball court and additional classrooms.
My responsibility was to progress its design through Sketchup and solve various issues
that came up during the internship. This was the project that takes my first priority.
When I started internship, the project had already faced an issue which its cantilever was
not approved by the Fire Safety (Bomba) Authority. We could only cantilever 18 meters
above the ground floor so to not hinder the aerial platform from the fire truck. Thus, we
had to redesign the west elevation façade.
At the same time, I worked out with Mr. Voon the design and spatial arrangement for the
upper floors which includes an auditorium and a board room. As the upper parts of the
building offers significantly better views, we had to plan the layout to our advantage.
Moreover, I was given the chance to contribute by suggesting improvements on the layout
of the basketball court which was near the bridge.
I have seen the tender process in my previous internships but a demolition tender was
my first in this case. I was fortunate enough to witness a site possession for a demolition
contract and I able to study the documents of the contract. I was in-charge with writing
the minutes of meeting for this contract and occasionally contact the contractor on the
progress of the work.
This project was made more interesting by the fact of its location where it is surrounded
by a hotel, a 120-year-old church and another school. Transportation of materials and
tools would prove difficult due to the constraints timing and access.
I discovered that our roles as architects have a responsibility to properly engage the
neighbouring parties as to inform and explain about the projects so that there is a proper
channel for future complaints if necessary. I was tasked to produce a PowerPoint
presentation to the hotel management executives on our project. I also prepared answers
for questions that they might be concerned with, such as noise, access, safety, etc. The
presentation went well and a friendly connection was established.
5. However, they had informed us that the access road was not surrendered to the
government and thus we had to create a new path thereby modifying the landscaping at
the north. Furthermore, additional changes was made for the east and west façade due
to miscalculation of the hotel height obstructing the view. Thankfully, most of these issues
were solved before I ended my internship.

and utilities surrounding it.

9. 2.2 TERRACE STRETCH DESIGN AT MUKIM DENGKIL, SERDANG
his project was still in its preliminary stage and its design was not set in stone yet. I was
tasked to come up with a few design options for the house. The challenge for this design
was that the area for each lot is quite small as its spans 10 meters by 5 meters. Each
house must include 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. I had to meticulously check with the
guidelines provided from the Uniform Building By-Law (UBBL) that I fulfil enough area for
each room and open area.
I had worked out 5 different layout options for Mr. Voon. Some are more ambitious, while
others are conservative. I also built the 3D models of the options to show how it might
look if its built.

10. 2.3 3 STOREY BUNGALOW DEVELOPMENT AT BUKIT PERMATA, GOMBAK
This is a residential project is in its construction phase.
I was tasked to draft elevations and insert details for the bathrooms and kitchens for this
project. I also set out the tiling for the floor and wall. I regularly attended the meetings for
this project to learn about issues that could be presented throughout a project. Moreover,
I was involved in a site inspection after one of the meetings.

12. 2.4 MIXED HOUSE DEVELOPMENT AT HULU LANGAT
This is another residential project in its construction phase. It is located near to Zoo
Negara. My responsibilities for this project is very similar to the Bukit Permata project and
I attend their meetings too.

14. 2.5 CAMERON HIGHLANDS APARTMENT ROOFTOP RENOVATION
This project was still in its proposal stage when I worked on it. The owner of the apartment
wanted to modify the rooftop to allow a barbeque area with a washroom. I was tasked to
lay out the floor plan and create a Sketchup model for it.

15. 3.0 SPECIAL EVENTS
3.1 ARCHITECTS MEET THE PUBLIC SESSION AT PAM
On the Saturday at Week 5, I was fortunate to be an observer to a Meet the Public Session
where architects and various consultants have an appointment with people who faced
difficulty mainly on dealing with unsatisfactory work ethics from consultants and
contractors. Moreover, I got to talk with the consultants and other architects after the
sessions and managed to receive essential tips and advice from them.
16. 4.0 CONCLUSION
In conclusion, I have made been aware that I have to be mindful towards different
authorities especially the Bomba Authority. I also should take into consideration the safety
of the students when designing the Confucian School Block. By writing the minutes of
meeting for the project, I had to study the conditions and contents of the contract before
going for the meeting so that I would not lose track of what will be discussed. Also, it was
a good incentive for paying attention during meeting. From observing different site
meetings, I was able differentiate ways a leader could manage a team efficiently and how
they deal with complaints presented by neighbours. I found out that project managers find
not only efficiency but ethics when selecting contractors.
When designing, it was severely different from designing for a school project. I need to
take consideration for the budget given and the time necessary to draft and construct
from the design. I was not able to drastically alter the design of the school block as the
interior layout plans have already been drafted. With this restrains, I had to work creatively
that it was aesthetically pleasing while not pushing too much work for the draftsmen to
alter the floor plans.
I have always admired how my supervisors from different internships are able to be in
good terms with people around them, from clients to colleagues. This is no less as I
discovered Mr. Voon and Mr. Steven always keep in touch with friends from different fields
of knowledge because a reliable network of consultants could prove useful when you face
problems as they can provide insight towards their specialty.
I learnt things the I have not realized as well such as the work of surveyors providing
information on not only the levels and structures of the site and its surroundings but also
which parts of the land belongs to whom. It was clear on how important this knowledge is
for transporting materials and tools. I also got to reinforce my knowledge on the
responsibilities and capabilities of other consultants such as engineers and quantity
surveyors.
Lastly, I have realized that an architect has to have a caring personality. One must satisfy
the needs of not only the clients, but also the occupants, the authorities related and the
neighbours surrounding the site. One also has to be concerned with the team involved in
the project, such as the project manager, consultants, contractors and fellow coworkers,
so to properly communicate and work efficiently and professionally as a unit.
