Acknowledgement
First of all, I would like to thank my supervising architect Ar. Tan Choon Kiat and
Vincent Lai for accepting me and providing an opportunity to do my internship in RDC
Architek. I sincerely appreciate the chance and time for me to get some precious
experiences before I graduate, it is an efficient way for me to see the “bigger picture” of
architecture. Besides, I want to thank my colleagues for assisting me in software,
providing different view point with their experience and being friendly to me.

Introduction
The internship training started on January 7th
2019 and ended on February 22th
2019.
RDC Architek is located at Taman Ekoperniagaan, Johor Bahru. The company is built
in Eco Business Park 1 which has a 612-acre green business park development. The
business hour is from 9.00am to 6.00pm, from Monday to Friday. RDC Architek is
originated from Singapore and it has 3 branches which are in Kuala Lumpur, Melaka
and Johor Bahru. RDCA JB branch consisted of 40+ staff members and run by 4
directors which are Ar. Siow Chien Fu, Ar. Tan Choon Kiat, Mr. Mohd Hesharm Ibrahim
and Mr. Lee Wee Siang.
This module is aimed at introducing students to the requirements, activities and
operations involved in working in architectural practices. The purpose is to facilitate the
involvement of students in professional attachments to architectural practices in order
to develop an understanding of the general nature, principles and procedure of law and
legislation as applied to architectural drawings, especially the Building by-laws.
Students will also be exposed to the process of authority submission for various
drawings from an architectural practice and the range of contract documentation
produced to support these drawings.

Instant Achievement (Villa)
Site Location: Johor Bahru
Specification: Residential
Floor Area: 583,777.90 sqft
Task: Sections, Elevations and Colouring
This is the first project that they assigned me to do, so they assigned some minor task
for me such as producing sections and amending elevations based on the plan.
Besides, I need to put some doors and windows from the schedule.
I was exposed to some details when I was doing the sections such as the connections
of beam and column, lintel, foundation, roof and ceiling. It is a good chance for me to
revise and refresh what had I learnt from previous semester.
After I finished the sections and elevations, I was tasked to do the colouring for them. I
was noticed to use the specific layers for particular materials.

Allied Precision Technologies Factory
Site Location: Melaka
Specification: Factory
Floor Area: 338,675.35 sqft
Task: Amending Drawings, BP Submission and Meeting Minute.
This project is at Melaka, the client wants to build a new factory which has a canteen,
assembly area, production area and office area.
To have a better understanding of a project’s flow, my supervisor assigned me to
involve in BP submission to let me understand and see how a project being done. For
this project, I was assigned to amend floor plan layout as according to client’s
comments and produce some sections, elevations as well as roof plan from the revised
floor plan.
Space, scale, fire protection and circulation were being considered when I was
amending the layout, it has to comply client’s needs and budget while fulfilling UBBL
Law such as 60% of building size and 7% of landscape from the overall site.

Other than that, I had a chance to attend a Client Consultant Meeting (CCM) with a
project architect to understand the client’s needs and how a CCM looks like. After that,
I was tasked to do the meeting minute for this CCM.
From this project, I’ve known that a detailed drawing is not that easy for a student who
seldom uses proper lineweight, specification and follow the UBBL Law, so I am glad to
have a chance to learn how to draw a clean and right drawing with some understanding
of typical details, calculations, schedule, numbering, tag and specification.
Besides, it is a nice opportunity to see how the project architect communicate with
contractor, quantity surveyor, engineer and M&E during the CCM.

Paragon Suite
Site Location: Johor Bahru
Specification: Apartment
Floor Area: 730,014 sqft
Task: Arrangement of defect list
“Sometimes we are not doing the drawings for the whole time”, I thought as an intern,
draftsman or even project architect, we need to spend our whole time to deal with the
drawings, but this project gave me some different viewpoint.
For this project, I was assigned to do a defect list for Paragon Suite. The defects that I
was dealing were water leakage and tiles pop-up. Based on the photos and unit
numbers, I need to allocate and do a table to show which unit has what defect.
Although it was a simple task but it actually let me know that quality control is very
important and we need to be responsible to client and every single building that we
build.

Medini
Site Location: Nusajaya
Specification: Commercial
Floor Area: 778,845 sqft
Task: Colouring
For this project, I was assigned to do colouring for floor plans. As it is a high-rise
building, from this project, I was able to visualise the space quality. It is quite different
with the Villa project as I was required to colour the sections and elevations for Villa
project and I was assigned to colour the floor plans for this project, so I am able to see
how the space functions, how a high-rise building plan looks like and how the car park
contributes to the residents.

Impian Walk
Site Location: Johor Bahru
Specification: Shop Office
Floor Area: 347,615 sqft
Task: Numbering for Tender Drawing
As we need to handle different kind of projects and drawings, every projects are in
different stages, so after I involved in BP submission for Allied Factory, my supervisor
put me into a team which was doing tender drawing to let me see different view.
For this task, I was assigned to do the numbering for tender drawing and categorised it
into a list of drawings. From the given schedules, detailed drawings and type of units, I
was required to put the number in title block for each drawings and allocated the
number into a list of drawings.
Although it was a minor task and I didn’t involve in any design stages or drawings, but it
gave me a different perspective to see this industry and let me know the requirements
for a tender drawing.

Vervocity
Site Location: Kulai

Floor Area: 751,885 sqft
Task: Site Visit, CCM
“It is a nice opportunity for an intern to go for a site visit”. For this project, although I
didn’t involve in any design stages or drawings amendment, but I went for a site visit
with a project architect to gain some experiences.
The site has 4 phases, each of them were in different stages, 1 phase was almost
done, 2 phases were still in progress and another phase was just started. Thus, it is a
nice opportunity for me to view different progress in one session.
Through this site visit, I can see the connection details, the step of how they build and
actual scale of the site and building. Besides, the project architect has taught me and
let me notice some details when he saw it such as the connection of rainwater
downpipe and vent pipe.
In addition, I went for the CCM with the project architect to see how they dealt with
different problems.

Conclusion
During the 7 weeks of my internship, I am glad that I had those chances to involve in
different projects and see how an architecture firm works, but I have to say that 7
weeks are definitely not enough for us. For example, we need time to understand and
use the requirements, rules and regulations, we need time to finish given tasks, we
also need time to understand the whole progress. But, having internship actually gives
us a glimpse of the architecture industry.
Throughout the whole session, I have been exposed to many types of project such as
high-rise building, 3-storey commercial block and factory. There are a lot of knowledge
and information that I can get, from here I have learnt how various building serves to
different people and needs.
Other than that, RDC Arkitek gives me a lot of opportunity to learn and involve, instead
of letting me do some scattered projects, they let me do the BP submission for Allied
Factory, it is a nice opportunity to learn and see how BP submission processes.
Besides, another reason why I would say that RDC Arkitek is a nice firm is because
there is a mini theater in the office, so sometimes there will have some art events as
well as talks and I have participated for 2 talks already which are Acotec and
Cementaid. Aside from technical skill and communication skill, RDC Arkitek actually
lets us involve in some event and event management to let us be all-around.
Lastly, I have to thank RDC Arkitek and all the colleagues that gave me task and
assisted me.

  • 7. Introduction The internship training started on January 7th 2019 and ended on February 22th 2019. RDC Architek is located at Taman Ekoperniagaan, Johor Bahru. The company is built in Eco Business Park 1 which has a 612-acre green business park development. The business hour is from 9.00am to 6.00pm, from Monday to Friday. RDC Architek is originated from Singapore and it has 3 branches which are in Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and Johor Bahru. RDCA JB branch consisted of 40+ staff members and run by 4 directors which are Ar. Siow Chien Fu, Ar. Tan Choon Kiat, Mr. Mohd Hesharm Ibrahim and Mr. Lee Wee Siang. This module is aimed at introducing students to the requirements, activities and operations involved in working in architectural practices. The purpose is to facilitate the involvement of students in professional attachments to architectural practices in order to develop an understanding of the general nature, principles and procedure of law and legislation as applied to architectural drawings, especially the Building by-laws. Students will also be exposed to the process of authority submission for various drawings from an architectural practice and the range of contract documentation produced to support these drawings. Instant Achievement (Villa) Site Location: Johor Bahru Specification: Residential Floor Area: 583,777.90 sqft Task: Sections, Elevations and Colouring This is the first project that they assigned me to do, so they assigned some minor task for me such as producing sections and amending elevations based on the plan. Besides, I need to put some doors and windows from the schedule. I was exposed to some details when I was doing the sections such as the connections of beam and column, lintel, foundation, roof and ceiling. It is a good chance for me to revise and refresh what had I learnt from previous semester. After I finished the sections and elevations, I was tasked to do the colouring for them. I was noticed to use the specific layers for particular materials.   • 15. Allied Precision Technologies Factory Site Location: Melaka Specification: Factory Floor Area: 338,675.35 sqft Task: Amending Drawings, BP Submission and Meeting Minute. This project is at Melaka, the client wants to build a new factory which has a canteen, assembly area, production area and office area. To have a better understanding of a project’s flow, my supervisor assigned me to involve in BP submission to let me understand and see how a project being done. For this project, I was assigned to amend floor plan layout as according to client’s comments and produce some sections, elevations as well as roof plan from the revised floor plan. Space, scale, fire protection and circulation were being considered when I was amending the layout, it has to comply client’s needs and budget while fulfilling UBBL Law such as 60% of building size and 7% of landscape from the overall site.   • 16. Other than that, I had a chance to attend a Client Consultant Meeting (CCM) with a project architect to understand the client’s needs and how a CCM looks like. After that, I was tasked to do the meeting minute for this CCM. From this project, I’ve known that a detailed drawing is not that easy for a student who seldom uses proper lineweight, specification and follow the UBBL Law, so I am glad to have a chance to learn how to draw a clean and right drawing with some understanding of typical details, calculations, schedule, numbering, tag and specification. Besides, it is a nice opportunity to see how the project architect communicate with contractor, quantity surveyor, engineer and M&E during the CCM. Paragon Suite Site Location: Johor Bahru Specification: Apartment Floor Area: 730,014 sqft Task: Arrangement of defect list “Sometimes we are not doing the drawings for the whole time”, I thought as an intern, draftsman or even project architect, we need to spend our whole time to deal with the drawings, but this project gave me some different viewpoint. For this project, I was assigned to do a defect list for Paragon Suite. The defects that I was dealing were water leakage and tiles pop-up. Based on the photos and unit numbers, I need to allocate and do a table to show which unit has what defect. Although it was a simple task but it actually let me know that quality control is very important and we need to be responsible to client and every single building that we build.   • 25. Medini Site Location: Nusajaya Specification: Commercial Floor Area: 778,845 sqft Task: Colouring For this project, I was assigned to do colouring for floor plans. As it is a high-rise building, from this project, I was able to visualise the space quality. It is quite different with the Villa project as I was required to colour the sections and elevations for Villa project and I was assigned to colour the floor plans for this project, so I am able to see how the space functions, how a high-rise building plan looks like and how the car park contributes to the residents. Impian Walk Site Location: Johor Bahru Specification: Shop Office Floor Area: 347,615 sqft Task: Numbering for Tender Drawing As we need to handle different kind of projects and drawings, every projects are in different stages, so after I involved in BP submission for Allied Factory, my supervisor put me into a team which was doing tender drawing to let me see different view. For this task, I was assigned to do the numbering for tender drawing and categorised it into a list of drawings. From the given schedules, detailed drawings and type of units, I was required to put the number in title block for each drawings and allocated the number into a list of drawings. Although it was a minor task and I didn’t involve in any design stages or drawings, but it gave me a different perspective to see this industry and let me know the requirements for a tender drawing.   • 32. Vervocity Site Location: Kulai Specification: Shop Office Floor Area: 751,885 sqft Task: Site Visit, CCM “It is a nice opportunity for an intern to go for a site visit”. For this project, although I didn’t involve in any design stages or drawings amendment, but I went for a site visit with a project architect to gain some experiences. The site has 4 phases, each of them were in different stages, 1 phase was almost done, 2 phases were still in progress and another phase was just started. Thus, it is a nice opportunity for me to view different progress in one session. Through this site visit, I can see the connection details, the step of how they build and actual scale of the site and building. Besides, the project architect has taught me and let me notice some details when he saw it such as the connection of rainwater downpipe and vent pipe. In addition, I went for the CCM with the project architect to see how they dealt with different problems. Conclusion During the 7 weeks of my internship, I am glad that I had those chances to involve in different projects and see how an architecture firm works, but I have to say that 7 weeks are definitely not enough for us. For example, we need time to understand and use the requirements, rules and regulations, we need time to finish given tasks, we also need time to understand the whole progress. But, having internship actually gives us a glimpse of the architecture industry. Throughout the whole session, I have been exposed to many types of project such as high-rise building, 3-storey commercial block and factory. There are a lot of knowledge and information that I can get, from here I have learnt how various building serves to different people and needs. Other than that, RDC Arkitek gives me a lot of opportunity to learn and involve, instead of letting me do some scattered projects, they let me do the BP submission for Allied Factory, it is a nice opportunity to learn and see how BP submission processes. Besides, another reason why I would say that RDC Arkitek is a nice firm is because there is a mini theater in the office, so sometimes there will have some art events as well as talks and I have participated for 2 talks already which are Acotec and Cementaid. Aside from technical skill and communication skill, RDC Arkitek actually lets us involve in some event and event management to let us be all-around. Lastly, I have to thank RDC Arkitek and all the colleagues that gave me task and assisted me.
