Acknowledgements
Greatest thanks to Eleena Jamil Architect and the talented members working there, who have been very
helpful in guiding me through all of the works and projects. I would also like to thank them for their
patience with me throughout my many mistakes made while working.
I’d like to give my appreciation to the director, Ar. Dr. Eleena Jamil for giving me the chance to work in
her esteemed firm. Under your guidance and supervision, I have broadened my view of this industry as a
whole.
Also, I appreciate the work done by my lecturers and staff back at Taylor’s University, and especially my
tutor, Ms. Siti Balkish, for the support given during this short internship tenure.
1. Introduction
1.1 Foreword and Company Profile
My internship period with Eleena Jamil Architect took place from the 3rd
of January to the 10th
of March,
a period that encompasses 10 weeks. During this period, I took part and was involved in many of the
company’s current projects. These projects varied from pavilions to renovations to museum proposals.
Eleena Jamil Architect is an architecture firm that is well known for its low-key projects, with award
winning designs such as the Sepang House in Cyberjaya, Bamboo Playhouse in Lake Gardens and
Vermani House. The firm is located in Sering Ukay, Ampang, but is due for a relocation to a brand new
office later this year (a project that I am involved in and discussed in Section 2.8).
1.2 Organization Chart
Eleena Jamil Architect is an extremely small firm, with only 3 effective personnel (excluding interns). This
extremely small team is, as a result, tightly knit. As there aren’t dedicated persons, each member of the
firm is highly skilled in multiple categories. This jack-of-all-trades attitude is similarly expected upon
myself, and I have been working on renderings, post-processing, modelling, CAD, submitting drawings,
meetings, and many others.

3. Weekly Summary
3.1 Week 1 (3/1/2017 – 6/1/2017)
Project 1: Proposal for BERNAS Museum in Sekinchan
Throughout the week, I made a large scaled site model of a proposed interactive museum for
BERNAS, with the project site being in Sekinchan. This model was then later used during the
presentation for BERNAS executives. The model is based off of an existing SketchUp 3D model, and done
at a scale of 1:200.
Figure 1: Completed site model photo
In addition, I made a promotional flythrough video featuring the proposed museum design. While the
model was already made, I set the video’s structure, camera angles, lighting, etc. and rendered, edit and
published the video.
This video was then later used during the presentation for BERNAS executives.
Figure 2: Screenshot from video.

Project 2: Masjid Karwa in Penang
In addition to the BERNAS Museum, I also prepared a promotional video for a proposed mosque
upgrade located in Penang. While a 3D model existed, it was only good for basic massing, and thus I had
to model in SketchUp additional components and details that made up the video.
The video was then later used to present to the proposed mosque’s shareholders.
Figure 3: Screenshot from video.

3.2 Week 2 (9/1/2017 – 13/1/2017)
Project 1: Proposal for BERNAS Museum in Sekinchan
In addition to the video, some still renders had to be made. These renders were then made using
Lumion, and later edited in Photoshop. These renders were then later used during the presentation with
BERNAS executives later in the week.
The office building within the proposed BERNAS museum compound was also modelled, detailed and
rendered with SketchUp and Lumion.

Project 2: Masjid Karwa in Penang
As the MBPP submission requirements state that all “perancang” and “ulasan-ulasan” had to be present
on the submission drawing itself, I recorded the entire history of correspondence between Eleena Jamil
Architect and the various relevant authorities in Penang, and learned the various requirements each
respective authority has that has to be followed in the design.
Figure 5: Excerpt from submission document.
I also prepared a door and window schedule.
[REDACTED DUE TO COMPANY POLICY]

Miscellaneous: Drawing submission to MPSJ
Accompanied an office colleague to submit submission drawings to MPSJ. Some errors were found, and
quickly fixed. Learned about the various requirements set by MPSJ, and how to submit drawings and
amend errors. These skills learned will then be used to do the same for Project 3.

3.3 Week 3 (16/1/2017 – 20/1/2017)
Project 3: Proposed House Renovation in Bukit Antarabangsa
A measured drawing was made of a semi-detached house located in Bukit Antarabangsa. The
measurements were cross checked with an early and basic set of drawings and all discrepancies were
corrected.
Figure 8: Measured drawing of the house
A Revit BIM model was also made with the intention of easing the renovation process, as a BIM model
dramatically expedites the drawing process while still providing an instant visual feedback.

Project 4: MTC Timber Showcase at AIA Expo, Florida, USA
At this time, a closed competition was held by MTC to several architecture firms to design and build a
timber pavilion during the 2017 AIA Expo in Florida, USA. MTC (Malaysian Timber Council) desired to
showcase the aesthetic and structural qualities of meranti timber, an indigenous type of wood. In
addition, the design had to be portable, as all of the timber members had to be transported from
Malaysia to the US by air freight.
As such, a few fast mockups, study models and sketches were made to explore the possibilities of the
competition.

3.4 Week 4 (23/1/2017 – 27/1/2017)
Project 4: MTC Timber Showcase at AIA Expo, Florida, USA
As part of the presentation of the MTC Timber Showcase to a panel of MTC Executives, I made a 1:20
scale model of the pavilion.

Project 5: Bamboo Playhouse in Lake Gardens, Kuala Lumpur
During this time, Eleena Jamil Architect had a meeting with DBKL to discuss the maintenance of the
Bamboo Playhouse, an award winning structure that was built 3 years ago. Among present was Datuk Ir.
Thomas Richards, the executive for project management. The meeting was held informally at the site,
and the purpose was to discuss a suitable maintenance plan for the design. Experienced meeting with
municipal authorities to discuss contract related issues.

3.5 Week 5 (31/1/2017 – 3/2/2017) (CNY BREAK WEEK)
Project 4: MTC Timber Showcase at AIA Expo, Florida, USA
We presented to MTC executives our proposal for the MTC Timber Pavilion. Among present was the CEO
of the Malaysian Timber Council, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahim, and several directors of Industry and
Marketing. The presentation took place for around 20 minutes, and we presented the video, model and
animated graphics that I have prepared. Experienced design proposal presentation to clients.

3.6 Week 6 (6/2/2017 – 10/2/2017)
Project 3: Proposed House Renovation in Bukit Antarabangsa
The renovation was designed this week, with large, sweeping changes to be made to the existing
structure to introduce greens into the interior space. The previous BIM model is then modified and
“renovated” to visualize these changes. Learned designing within a budget.
Figure 16: BIM model
The construction drawings for this renovations were then also prepared.

Project 8: Office interior design in Tamarind Square, Cyberjaya
With Eleena Jamil Architect recently acquiring a new office, drawings were then required to be made for
the new custom furnishings and staircases that the new office would feature. This week, I worked on
two different custom staircase designs, including their details while making sure they comply with UBBL.
Learned staircase detailing, UBBL laws and staircase conventions.

3. Conclusion
I am grateful for all that I have learned during my short stint as an intern in this company. I have
learned the specific and at times, weird requirements that each authority needs. I have learned
how to detail, and specific formats for drawings. I have learned how to fold drawings, present
to clients, and visited contractors. Even my software skills have improved, with the copious
amounts of time I spent on AutoCAD, SketchUp and Revit.
I have also experienced for the first time the working lifestyle of an architect, and how his/her
life revolves around meeting deadlines, clients, budgets, authorities and contractors while still
desperately holding on to the original vision. It is a life of compromise.
With 10 weeks of working with Eleena Jamil Architect, the biggest takeaway is the fact that I
lack an enormous amount of information about the industry. There is so much to learn about
contracts, law, requirements, protocols and procedures notwithstanding the design aspect of
architecture. While I only have 2 more semesters to complete before I graduate, the fact
remains that there is an infinitely long road ahead of me.

Conclusion
  • 5. Acknowledgements Greatest thanks to Eleena Jamil Architect and the talented members working there, who have been very helpful in guiding me through all of the works and projects. I would also like to thank them for their patience with me throughout my many mistakes made while working. I’d like to give my appreciation to the director, Ar. Dr. Eleena Jamil for giving me the chance to work in her esteemed firm. Under your guidance and supervision, I have broadened my view of this industry as a whole. Also, I appreciate the work done by my lecturers and staff back at Taylor’s University, and especially my tutor, Ms. Siti Balkish, for the support given during this short internship tenure.
  • 6. 1. Introduction 1.1 Foreword and Company Profile My internship period with Eleena Jamil Architect took place from the 3rd of January to the 10th of March, a period that encompasses 10 weeks. During this period, I took part and was involved in many of the company’s current projects. These projects varied from pavilions to renovations to museum proposals. Eleena Jamil Architect is an architecture firm that is well known for its low-key projects, with award winning designs such as the Sepang House in Cyberjaya, Bamboo Playhouse in Lake Gardens and Vermani House. The firm is located in Sering Ukay, Ampang, but is due for a relocation to a brand new office later this year (a project that I am involved in and discussed in Section 2.8). 1.2 Organization Chart Eleena Jamil Architect is an extremely small firm, with only 3 effective personnel (excluding interns). This extremely small team is, as a result, tightly knit. As there aren’t dedicated persons, each member of the firm is highly skilled in multiple categories. This jack-of-all-trades attitude is similarly expected upon myself, and I have been working on renderings, post-processing, modelling, CAD, submitting drawings, meetings, and many others. Principal Architect AR. DR. ELEENA JAMIL Architect (LAM P2) Yusri Architect (LAM P2) Noridayah Razak

  • 9. 3. Weekly Summary 3.1 Week 1 (3/1/2017 – 6/1/2017)
  • 10. Project 1: Proposal for BERNAS Museum in Sekinchan Throughout the week, I made a large scaled site model of a proposed interactive museum for BERNAS, with the project site being in Sekinchan. This model was then later used during the presentation for BERNAS executives. The model is based off of an existing SketchUp 3D model, and done at a scale of 1:200. Figure 1: Completed site model photo In addition, I made a promotional flythrough video featuring the proposed museum design. While the model was already made, I set the video’s structure, camera angles, lighting, etc. and rendered, edit and published the video. This video was then later used during the presentation for BERNAS executives. Figure 2: Screenshot from video. [REDACTED DUE TO COMPANY POLICY] [REDACTED DUE TO COMPANY POLICY]
  • 11. Project 2: Masjid Karwa in Penang In addition to the BERNAS Museum, I also prepared a promotional video for a proposed mosque upgrade located in Penang. While a 3D model existed, it was only good for basic massing, and thus I had to model in SketchUp additional components and details that made up the video. The video was then later used to present to the proposed mosque’s shareholders. Figure 3: Screenshot from video. [REDACTED DUE TO COMPANY POLICY]
  • 12. 3.2 Week 2 (9/1/2017 – 13/1/2017)
  • 13. Project 1: Proposal for BERNAS Museum in Sekinchan In addition to the video, some still renders had to be made. These renders were then made using Lumion, and later edited in Photoshop. These renders were then later used during the presentation with BERNAS executives later in the week. The office building within the proposed BERNAS museum compound was also modelled, detailed and rendered with SketchUp and Lumion. Figure 4: 5 Office Render Project 2: Masjid Karwa in Penang As the MBPP submission requirements state that all “perancang” and “ulasan-ulasan” had to be present on the submission drawing itself, I recorded the entire history of correspondence between Eleena Jamil Architect and the various relevant authorities in Penang, and learned the various requirements each respective authority has that has to be followed in the design. Figure 5: Excerpt from submission document. I also prepared a door and window schedule. [REDACTED DUE TO COMPANY POLICY] [REDACTED DUE TO COMPANY POLICY]
  • 14. Figure 6: Door and window schedule. Miscellaneous: Drawing submission to MPSJ Accompanied an office colleague to submit submission drawings to MPSJ. Some errors were found, and quickly fixed. Learned about the various requirements set by MPSJ, and how to submit drawings and amend errors. These skills learned will then be used to do the same for Project 3. Figure 7: Door and window schedule. [REDACTED DUE TO COMPANY POLICY] [REDACTED DUE TO COMPANY POLICY]
  • 15. 3.3 Week 3 (16/1/2017 – 20/1/2017)
  • 16. Project 3: Proposed House Renovation in Bukit Antarabangsa A measured drawing was made of a semi-detached house located in Bukit Antarabangsa. The measurements were cross checked with an early and basic set of drawings and all discrepancies were corrected. Figure 8: Measured drawing of the house A Revit BIM model was also made with the intention of easing the renovation process, as a BIM model dramatically expedites the drawing process while still providing an instant visual feedback. Figure 9: Revit BIM model of the house [REDACTED DUE TO COMPANY POLICY] [REDACTED DUE TO COMPANY POLICY]
  • 17. Project 4: MTC Timber Showcase at AIA Expo, Florida, USA At this time, a closed competition was held by MTC to several architecture firms to design and build a timber pavilion during the 2017 AIA Expo in Florida, USA. MTC (Malaysian Timber Council) desired to showcase the aesthetic and structural qualities of meranti timber, an indigenous type of wood. In addition, the design had to be portable, as all of the timber members had to be transported from Malaysia to the US by air freight. As such, a few fast mockups, study models and sketches were made to explore the possibilities of the competition. Figure 10: Form study models in Sketchup [REDACTED DUE TO COMPANY POLICY]
  • 18. 3.4 Week 4 (23/1/2017 – 27/1/2017)
  • 19. Project 4: MTC Timber Showcase at AIA Expo, Florida, USA As part of the presentation of the MTC Timber Showcase to a panel of MTC Executives, I made a 1:20 scale model of the pavilion. Figure 11: 1:20 scale model In addition, a video was also prepared to highlight the various features of the pavilion design. Figure 12: Screenshot from video. [REDACTED DUE TO COMPANY POLICY] [REDACTED DUE TO COMPANY POLICY]
  • 20. In order to better understand the modularity and construction of the design, an animated GIF graphic of was made to demonstrate the potential method of construction. Figure 13: Still from animated GIF. Project 5: Bamboo Playhouse in Lake Gardens, Kuala Lumpur During this time, Eleena Jamil Architect had a meeting with DBKL to discuss the maintenance of the Bamboo Playhouse, an award winning structure that was built 3 years ago. Among present was Datuk Ir. Thomas Richards, the executive for project management. The meeting was held informally at the site, and the purpose was to discuss a suitable maintenance plan for the design. Experienced meeting with municipal authorities to discuss contract related issues. Figure 14: Photo from the meeting. [REDACTED DUE TO COMPANY POLICY] [REDACTED DUE TO COMPANY POLICY]
  • 21. 3.5 Week 5 (31/1/2017 – 3/2/2017) (CNY BREAK WEEK)
  • 22. Project 4: MTC Timber Showcase at AIA Expo, Florida, USA We presented to MTC executives our proposal for the MTC Timber Pavilion. Among present was the CEO of the Malaysian Timber Council, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahim, and several directors of Industry and Marketing. • 38. 3. Conclusion I am grateful for all that I have learned during my short stint as an intern in this company. I have learned the specific and at times, weird requirements that each authority needs. I have learned how to detail, and specific formats for drawings. I have learned how to fold drawings, present to clients, and visited contractors. Even my software skills have improved, with the copious amounts of time I spent on AutoCAD, SketchUp and Revit. I have also experienced for the first time the working lifestyle of an architect, and how his/her life revolves around meeting deadlines, clients, budgets, authorities and contractors while still desperately holding on to the original vision. It is a life of compromise. With 10 weeks of working with Eleena Jamil Architect, the biggest takeaway is the fact that I lack an enormous amount of information about the industry. There is so much to learn about contracts, law, requirements, protocols and procedures notwithstanding the design aspect of architecture. While I only have 2 more semesters to complete before I graduate, the fact remains that there is an infinitely long road ahead of me.
