A small business in rural Texas utilized wireless technologies to expand internet access in its community, allowing a university professor to teach online courses, a teacher to conduct night classes for Chinese students, and a doctor to stay connected to patients. This presentation will examine the challenges of expanding rural infrastructure and how one small business successfully partnered with local groups to connect their community through improved connectivity.

Interaction With Mobile Devices on Social Networks by Elderly People: A Surve...
The use of social networks in Brazil has been increasing on different groups of people. Although the high concentration of users are in the 20-40 years-old group there is an expansion in the group of people over 50 years which use social networks. These different groups have their own needs during the interaction with different social networks. The goal of this work is to present the results of a survey on the use of Facebook as an entertainment tool by older users in Brazil. The research shows that although most users adopt the social network for more than one hour a day, some of them still experience difficulties during its use and wish for new ways of interacting with the tool. The exploratory study outcomes allowed us to draw the personas for the Brazilian scenario. From this survey, were identified and defined the main personas, aiming at an efficient representation of the group studied. The survey showed us that although the majority of users had mobile devices and used for daily activities, some of them still face difficulties on handling them.

In 2007 the Census Department reported that 300 counties in the country had become majorities of color. By the year 2040 the majority of the country will be non white. In some states like California, Latinos will be the outright majority. What are the opportunities and challenges this rapid demographic change present to strengthening of our democracy and ensuring shared economic prosperity? Led by PolicyLink Associate Director Rubén Lizardo this workshop gave BootCamp participants the opportunity share and discuss strategies for community building and leadership in neighborhoods and cities that are experiencing rapid demographic change.
#SWDE2019 - Incorporating Technology into Social Justice Assignments for Soci...
The purpose of this workshop is show how to incorporate the use of technology into social work assignments that focus on social justice across the curriculum. We will provide a brief overview of teaching with technology before focusing on how to infuse technology into an assignment, providing examples for social justice focused assignments. Participants will learn to identify ways to substitute, augment, modify or redefine existing learning strategies and assignments with technology-mediated learning strategies and assignments, and leave the workshop with ideas and possible assignments that use technology to meet the learning needs identified in their syllabus.

Social media can be useful tools for academics. Twitter allows researchers to follow experts in their fields, discover new research and papers, and stay updated on conferences. It can help make academic research more open and accessible worldwide. Facebook is useful for promoting university departments and projects, but is not as good for high-quality academic content. Social networks like Academia.edu and online platforms that integrate social features help researchers publish, read, and organize papers as well as connect with other scholars.

This short deck is from a panel talk at USC on leveraging social media for research and scholarship on 2/14/14.
- Although there are myriad ways in which one might want to use social networking to enhance one’s scholarly profile, one of the best ways, in my opinion, is academia dot edu. These are the characteristics I find compelling and which I’ll address in pairs.
- Current academic disciplines coalesced during the ascendency of print literacy. In the digital era, they need rethinking. Until that time however, we must be scrappy about how we gather and share research. The fact that A/E is international in scope helps us break down barriers to knowledge even as it allows us to find fresh scholarship more easily. The work that I do in new media requires me to stay abreast of things such as fair use judgments, and technical innovations. A/E lets me do this by establishing research interests. I added a recent article that was published last October, and within 48 hours it was read in 17 countries. I’d say that is unprecedented.
Tagging as a central logic is increasingly important to consider in these days of search engines. If one is interdisciplinary, it is nearly impossible to keep abreast of the many communities or journals in every field your work touches. Moreover, we can all benefit from exposure to other field’s approach to concepts and methods. Since tagging is the central logic, you can actually find topics across disciplines. This also acts as an analytic tool which one can use for tenure and promotion since one’s work is tracked.
These last two points are somewhat smaller but perhaps important. Increasingly we face profile fatigue—that is the need to make current multiple profiles on sites such as LinkdIn, Facebook, Acdemia.edu, Google Plus, Twitter, Media Commons—can be daunting and terribly repetitive. While I do like to keep some federation in my profiles, AE includes widgets for Twitter, Google and Facebook which can help to mitigate some of this fatigue as updating one can update the others.
Moreover, the provenance of the site is not corporate but grounded in academe and this, for me, argues for its usefulness as well as its ideological grounding.
In closing, let me just recall the fact the in 1945, Vannevar Bush decried the harmful effects of information overload and poor data management noting that Mendel’s groundbreaking work on genetics was lost to the world for a generation because it was not accessible to those who might expand upon it. Almost 70 years later this situation has increased exponentially. Bush was arguing for the MEMEX which many credit with being the blueprint for the computer—using social media to harness the power of computing is a worthwhile endeavor.

Using Twitter in Academic Teaching

Alia Wong’s main argument is that today’s children are considered to be experts of internet and technology but they lack basic education to have proper experience of the virtual life. We are asked to believe that teens have no idea of the perils they could face online. They need to be given proper education so that they can avoid problems like cyber bullying and internet addiction. She says that, “Social media can be addictive and full of predators” (Wong, 2015).Question No.02
The most convincing part for me was that online experiences subconsciously influences the identity of kids. There is an obvious example which supports the writer’s opinion. Kids from Eastern countries use social media where they experience Western culture. They subconsciously start to adapt Western culture and values. Social media experiences also influence the gender and gender roles of kids. This is evident from the arguments of the writer. She says, “They (online experiences) shape an individual’s identity” (Wong, 2015).Question No. 03
I think that least convincing argument in the article is that adults exaggerate the cybercrimes committed against the kids. Cybercrimes against kids are highlighted in social media not to exaggerate the crime but to make the parents aware of the threats that children could face online. This is done to just ensure safety of kids in the cyber world. Wary of cybercriminals, parents use parental controls to keep track of their kid’s virtual life. Wong writes in the article that, “Adults respond to such incidents with fear mongering and information campaigns” (Wong, 2015).Question No. 04
Wong is trying to persuade the stakeholders in educational system to start programs to educate children about the cyber world. The most important audience for the article is policy makers because they have highest impact on educational policies. Education department officials are also the target audience because they choose the curriculum and syllabus. Teachers and parents are also likely to read the article.

When speaking about program evaluation, that is an essential tool in evaluating university flaws and successes it is important to discuss the various roadblocks to a uniformed system. The biggest roadblock would be the cost. With this cost of data collection, is the ways in which it is collected. Many universities believe in purchasing expensive tools that would all them to collect in a more uniform and mainstream way. A well-defined budget would need to be put in place to make sure that the cost of the overall evaluation is balanced and justified. This way the department could see just how much they are spending in each category to see if they can afford the tools needed for collection. However, the data collection results yield an outcome that is worth the money spent on tools. When universities use data-driven collection their results, they can see what is working and what is not working. With this data, they can make effective changes to go in a positive direction. Technological infrastructure helps get the data needed in a timely manner and analyze it effectively. This cuts down on the manual labor that university administrators would need to do. For Binchley College, it was helpful that they had so much data collected and it was laid out in a clear to understand manner to interpret. I think of data of concern was the lack of background between the different year. It would be critical to see if any on-campus events or changes yielded a better return. One aspect that needed to be changed was the cost metrics. It would have been beneficial to see where the donations from the alumni were being spent compared with the amount donated. This way we could break it down into categories and change what is needed. This way the budget would stay the same year after year.

Online Education: Helping Adults Achieve their Educational and professional Goals
Thesis: Although Human Resource Managers and Admissions Counselors often have concerns about the quality of online education such that they more often than not discriminate against holders of online degrees, the benefits of having a degree over none is leading most adults and working parents to pursue online education as the only avenue for them to keep their jobs, attend to family and personal matters while achieving their educational and professional goals.
I. The advent of the internet and an ongoing need for education has served as the impetus for the steadily growing of online education.
A. A study by (Ormond 46), presented in his book, reveals that ‘‘online and distance learning are the world’s fastest growing areas of educational development’’.
B. According to a study by Harvard Business School Professor Clayton Christensen and Michael Horn, by 2019, about half of all high school courses will be taken online.
II. Numerous researches have shown that the quality of education delivered online is on the same par with if not more rigorous than education delivered in traditional bricks and mortar institution.
A. Most online education students find that online education requires more discipline and commitment.
B. Prominent institutions like Harvard University, the University of London, and University of South Africa among others have created and are delivering some of their programs online to adults and busy individuals who cannot come to campus.
C. That the Big Three (Thomas Edison State College, Charter Oak States College, and Excelsior College) are regionally accredited and are 100% devoted to online education for adults, is an indication of the quality of the education offered by these colleges.
III. There is a need to sensitize and appeal to the inner conscience of Human Resource and hiring managers to stop the discrimination against legitimate online education degree holders and enforce laws on online degree discrimination.
A. Making some traditional students take at least one or two online classes can help change the bias against online education.
B. It is possible to help adults who have lost hope of returning back to college to take advantage of the technology of the twenty first century to achieve and live their dreams of becoming educated and landing the their dream jobs.

The VAT: Video Analysis at Scale
These are the slides for a talk I gave about my video analytics project at the CATAPULT Center at Indiana University (Bloomington) on October 16, 2014. The abstract is below:
Cultural analytics, a newer branch of the digital humanities, is an approach that deploys computer technologies to analyze the formal features of art and culture, making them available to interpretive methods. Moving image media is particularly ripe for computational analysis given its increasing ubiquity in contemporary culture. Indeed, digital video—whether recorded digitally or digitized from film—is a rapidly expanding form of contemporary cultural production, one made possible by the proliferation of personal recording technologies and hosting platforms like YouTube, Vimeo and the Internet Archive. In short, video is one of the most compelling “big data,” issues of the current cultural moment; its formats are diverse, rapidly transmitted, and boundlessly large in number.
Yet despite its scale and importance, video remains a daunting object for sustained research, for obstacles that are technological, institutional and conceptual in nature. In this talk, Virginia Kuhn will describe her large-scale video analytics project which is supported by the NSF’s XSEDE program (extreme science and engineering discovery environment) and her project team’s efforts at establishing a software workbench for video analysis, annotation, and visualization, using both current and experimental discovery methods.

This document discusses the challenges of large scale video analytics. It notes that video is a massive and growing form of data, but tools for analyzing video lag behind those for text and images. Key obstacles to large scale video analysis include a lack of shared vocabularies and standards for workflow and data persistence, as well as the sheer size of video data and issues of objectivity versus subjectivity in media. I argue that assessment begins in assignment design such that students know the criteria by which they'll be judged, and so they can reflect upon their own active learning and engagement with the media that barrages us in the contemporary moment. This approach also provides opportunities for revision and fosters critical media literacy.

While there is no mandate to include such data visualization, it is an increasingly important practice with which graduating Honors students need familiarity. We will look more carefully at these projects and the data viz assignment together in class.

- 8. Anonymous Identities by Ian Malave Over the past decade, the internet has grown at an astounding rate. In this time, advertisers have leveraged new technologies to shape the online economy and to dramatically strengthen their power. At the same time, countless companies have sprung up and begun vying for a limited source of advertising dollars, reducing their individual power. In turn, these companies have been pressured to adopt new methods of tracking users in order to secure advertising funding. Consequently, anonymity has become non-existent for internet users, and even more significantly, advertisers have begun exploiting their knowledge of users to filter what users see online. While this data economy has enabled many people to access advanced technologies and web platforms for free, they come at a cost: Internet users’ activity is helping to shape a future in which conglomerates and advertisers dominate and can profoundly impact the online economy through small changes. Anonymous Identities provides a representative look at the progression of the online economy over the past ten years. - 11. Equality < Equity by Soo-ah Rho This project explores educational disparity in the United States and the stark differences between schools in urban and suburban settings. Public schools, traditionally funded heavily by local property taxes, continue to widen the gap between education quality in high and low poverty neighborhoods. By examining how poverty affects a student’s education as well as the funding systems of public schools in key states such as Illinois and California, Equality < Equity reveals the injustice and segregation in the public education system of the United States. While many states have undergone substantial reform, they have yet to ensure equal and adequate funding. Poorer schools struggle to gain state level funding that will make up for the lack of local revenue, but in the words of California Governor Jerry Brown, “equal treatment for children in unequal situations is not justice,” –nor is it equity. The larger problem is that not only do children in urban, high-poverty schools receive less funding, they also face challenges that schools are unable to address. By juxtaposing the fundamentally unequal funding systems with the challenges children in urban areas face, this project will highlight an injustice that can no longer be ignored. http://storm.usc.edu/~srho/
