How about laptop computers?  Can one identify Hitchcock films by their shot length and camera angles? What about Spielberg? Orson Welles? Ridley Scott?  Are police officers depicted the same way in fiction and nonfiction films such that their authority is reinforced unquestioningly?  Do film and television give accurate information about medical issues? Legal issues?

Editor's Notes

  1. I want to start by contextualizing my title a bit. When I say scale, I mean both macro and micro: some form of mechanical ‘reading’ is necessary to handle the vast archives created by contemporary culture. But this does not mean that we abandon close reading; rather, video analytics provides a way for close reading to occur, enhanced by contextual information about the whole.
  2. These extractors are applied upon ingestion. They are best for batch compute, and parallelization.
  3. These are the descriptors that run interactively necessitating the dedicated I/O node on the Gordon supercomputer in order that we can query on-demand.
