Professional Development Day: Interim Assessment Analysis
Thursday, September 10, 2009

Aims:
  • Using Benchmark 1 assessment data, teachers will…
o Categorize students based on their performance
o Create an intervention plan for students which includes two
specific strategies that will lead to increased mastery by the 2nd
          benchmark
o Set student performance goals for the 2nd benchmark assessment
o Determine which skills will be spiraled, taught to small groups,
and re- taught to the whole class

Agenda
2:45 Whole Staff Meeting

3:00-3:30 Individual Reflection Time

3:30-4:00 Meetings with Principal and/or Coach

Products and Artifacts due Monday, September 14, 2009
Benchmark 1
                               Individual Reflection Sheet

Complete the charts below.
Grade Subject Overall Mastery Mastery Goal for the
                                                                   2nd Benchmark

Using the data you have received and the chart attached to this page,
categorize the assessed skills into three groups. (Use Attachment 1.)

   • Class Mastery- 85%-100%
o Students will practice these skills on homework, quizzes, and do nows.

   • Approaching class mastery- 70%-84%
o These skills will be reviewed with a quick mini-lesson or in small group
sessions during independent practice or intervention time.

   • Below class mastery- below 70%
o These skills will be re-taught to the entire class.

Create a plan for covering the skills you’ve categorized above. (Use the
planning calendar.)

   • Class mastery (85%and higher)
o How often will you spiral these into the students’ work? (once per week,
              twice per week, etc.)

   • Approaching class mastery (70%-84%)
o Exactly how will you ensure these skills are reviewed during a class
              period or at another time?
o Plan them into your 2nd 4-week scope and sequence.

   • Below class mastery (below 70%)
o Exactly when will you re-teach these skills?
o How did you teach these skills the first time?
o What will you do differently the second time? (Be specific. Repeating
the same lesson will NOT yield the desired results.)
o Plan them into your 2nd 4-week scope and sequence.
Using the data from the first 8-weeks, compare skills tested on both assessments. List the
first quarter skills which less than 85% of the students mastered. Then, write down the
percentage of students who mastered the same skill on the 3rd 4-week Benchmark
assessment.

Skill % Mastery on % Mastery on % Mastery on
                                        Benchmark 1 Benchmark 2 Quarter 3

Put a  next to each skill that 85% or more of the students showed mastery
on the third benchmark.

Put an * next to each skill that remains mastered by less than 85% of the
students. (Please make sure to be explicit about how and when these skills
will be revisited in the 4th 4-weeks.)
List “surprise” questions. (These are questions where you were expecting students to do
significantly better than they did OR questions where students pleasantly surprised you
with their brilliance!)

# Question Mastery Possible Reason
                                               Percentage
List questions which were answered correctly by 50% or less of the students. Using the
questions below as guides, reflect on the possible reasons students performed poorly on
these questions.
# Question Mastery Possible Reason
                                              Percentage

    • Were there common misconceptions that manifested themselves through
        incorrect answer choices?
    • Is the question confusing?
    • Could there have been more than one correct answer?
    • Was the question not written well?
Students
List the students who mastered 90% or more of the skills on the assessment. List two specific
ways you will push them in the next four weeks.
Student Support #1 Support #2

List the students who mastered 75%-84% of the skills on the assessment. List two specific
interventions you will use in the next 4 weeks to ensure success on the state assessments.
Student Intervention #1 Intervention #2

List the students who mastered less than 60% of the skills in the first nine weeks. List two
specific interventions you will use for these students in the next four weeks.
Student Intervention #1 Intervention #2
Specific reflection questions…
   • Are you pleased with how your students performed on this assessment?
      Why or why not?
   • If you are not pleased, take a moment to identify some reasons why
students did not do well. Check all that apply.

 Students did not have enough time to complete the assessment.

 Students have not been behaving well in my class. Therefore, we have not
been able to cover the material as thoroughly as I would like.

 I have been struggling to plan well for my class, so I did not prepare students
well for this assessment.

 The material covered in class and the skills assessed on the test were not
aligned.

 The rigor of the interim assessment greatly differed from the rigor of the
weekly assessments.

Ihsnola pd on looking at data

  • 1. Professional Development Day: Interim Assessment Analysis Thursday, September 10, 2009 Aims: • Using Benchmark 1 assessment data, teachers will… o Categorize students based on their performance o Create an intervention plan for students which includes two specific strategies that will lead to increased mastery by the 2nd benchmark o Set student performance goals for the 2nd benchmark assessment o Determine which skills will be spiraled, taught to small groups, and re- taught to the whole class Agenda 2:45 Whole Staff Meeting 3:00-3:30 Individual Reflection Time 3:30-4:00 Meetings with Principal and/or Coach Products and Artifacts due Monday, September 14, 2009
  • 2. Benchmark 1 Individual Reflection Sheet Complete the charts below. Grade Subject Overall Mastery Mastery Goal for the 2nd Benchmark Using the data you have received and the chart attached to this page, categorize the assessed skills into three groups. (Use Attachment 1.) • Class Mastery- 85%-100% o Students will practice these skills on homework, quizzes, and do nows. • Approaching class mastery- 70%-84% o These skills will be reviewed with a quick mini-lesson or in small group sessions during independent practice or intervention time. • Below class mastery- below 70% o These skills will be re-taught to the entire class. Create a plan for covering the skills you’ve categorized above. (Use the planning calendar.) • Class mastery (85%and higher) o How often will you spiral these into the students’ work? (once per week, twice per week, etc.) • Approaching class mastery (70%-84%) o Exactly how will you ensure these skills are reviewed during a class period or at another time? o Plan them into your 2nd 4-week scope and sequence. • Below class mastery (below 70%) o Exactly when will you re-teach these skills? o How did you teach these skills the first time? o What will you do differently the second time? (Be specific. Repeating the same lesson will NOT yield the desired results.) o Plan them into your 2nd 4-week scope and sequence.
  • 3. Using the data from the first 8-weeks, compare skills tested on both assessments. List the first quarter skills which less than 85% of the students mastered. Then, write down the percentage of students who mastered the same skill on the 3rd 4-week Benchmark assessment. Skill % Mastery on % Mastery on % Mastery on Benchmark 1 Benchmark 2 Quarter 3 Put a  next to each skill that 85% or more of the students showed mastery on the third benchmark. Put an * next to each skill that remains mastered by less than 85% of the students. (Please make sure to be explicit about how and when these skills will be revisited in the 4th 4-weeks.)
  • 4. List “surprise” questions. (These are questions where you were expecting students to do significantly better than they did OR questions where students pleasantly surprised you with their brilliance!) # Question Mastery Possible Reason Percentage
  • 5. List questions which were answered correctly by 50% or less of the students. Using the questions below as guides, reflect on the possible reasons students performed poorly on these questions. # Question Mastery Possible Reason Percentage • Were there common misconceptions that manifested themselves through incorrect answer choices? • Is the question confusing? • Could there have been more than one correct answer? • Was the question not written well?
  • 6. Students List the students who mastered 90% or more of the skills on the assessment. List two specific ways you will push them in the next four weeks. Student Support #1 Support #2 List the students who mastered 75%-84% of the skills on the assessment. List two specific interventions you will use in the next 4 weeks to ensure success on the state assessments. Student Intervention #1 Intervention #2 List the students who mastered less than 60% of the skills in the first nine weeks. List two specific interventions you will use for these students in the next four weeks. Student Intervention #1 Intervention #2
  • 7. Specific reflection questions… • Are you pleased with how your students performed on this assessment? Why or why not? • If you are not pleased, take a moment to identify some reasons why students did not do well. Check all that apply.  Students did not have enough time to complete the assessment.  Students have not been behaving well in my class. Therefore, we have not been able to cover the material as thoroughly as I would like.  I have been struggling to plan well for my class, so I did not prepare students well for this assessment.  The material covered in class and the skills assessed on the test were not aligned.  The rigor of the interim assessment greatly differed from the rigor of the weekly assessments.  _____________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________  _____________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ Lessons learned: What will you do differently on the next interim assessment?  _____________________________________________________________________  _____________________________________________________________________  _____________________________________________________________________  _____________________________________________________________________  _____________________________________________________________________  _____________________________________________________________________
