This document outlines a demerit system and consequences for misbehavior at school. Minor infractions like uniform violations or disruptions result in warnings, demerits, and detention. Receiving 4 demerits in a day results in detention. Failing to serve detention leads to suspension. Major infractions like fighting, harassment, or vandalism result in 1-5 day suspensions. Serious offenses including drugs, weapons, or threats lead to longer suspensions and potential expulsion, with mandatory parental and authority involvement. Consequences get progressively more severe with repeated or escalating misbehavior.

1. Behavior Expectations<br />The Demerit System<br />Teachers will assign a mark to students who do not meet the following simplified list of expectations.<br />DS = Disrespect to scholar: Scholar says something disrespectful to another scholarDA=Disrespect to an adult: Scholar says something disrespectful to an adultHD = Hallway disruption: Scholar causes a disruption (interrupts learning) in the hallway. CD = Class disruption: Scholar causes a disruption in the classroom that interrupts learning.OT = Off task: Scholar is not on task during guided or independent practice or when given directions to complete a task.PI = Prohibited item: Silly bands, sunflower seeds, noodles, gum, outside foodFD= Following directions: Scholar does not follow teacher directions.AC = Arguing Consequence: Scholar is issued a demerit or warning and argues with the teacher. LIE = Lying: Scholar is caught be dishonestUNI= Uniform: At HR, scholar is missing a part of uniform. After HR, scholar's shirt is untucked, tie is untied, lapels unbuttoned.T=Tardy: Scholar is tardy to class without a pass.U= Unprepared: Scholar does not have a pen, pencil, paper, or textbook for class.<br />Discipline Policy<br />CONSEQUENCES AND INTERVENTIONS FOR MINOR INFRACTIONS<br />1st Instance: Reminder of Expectation – Scholar is given a verbal reminder of the expectation for a specific inappropriate behavior. Dreamkeeper allows the scholar to practice the behavior the correct way.<br />2nd Instance: Teacher Assigns a Demerit – Teacher assigns a demerit. Once the demerit is issued verbally, the code is written in the passport and the teacher signs his/her initials beside the code.<br />3rd Instance: Reflection Time Away from the Community – Scholar is instructed to take some think time to reflect on behavior choices and cool down. Dreamkeeper will invite the scholar back to the group in less than ten minutes. Scholar is expected to complete all assignments and reflection sheet while away from the community.<br />4th Instance: ISS – If a scholar receives 3 demerits for the same violation (OT, FD, AC, UNI) in a class period, the scholar will be escorted out of the classroom to the ISS room by a responsible scholar. If the scholar needs to be physically removed, the teacher will contact the DOS. The scholar will remain in the ISS room for the rest of the period and sent to their next period class.<br />5th Instance: Referral to Dean of Scholars – All previous steps have been followed and scholar has been given multiple opportunities to correct behavior. Office discipline referral should be completed before scholar is sent to the Dean of Scholars. In the instance of fighting, a referral should be sent after removal and de-escalation of the scholar.<br />DETENTION POLICY<br />If a scholar receives 4 or more demerits in one day, or an arguing a consequence or respect demerit, he or she will serve detention. One detention equals missing Friday JOY, two detentions equals 1 Friday detention until 6:30, and 3 detentions equals 1 Saturday detention from 9-12am, upon notification of parent. <br />Demerit and Consequence System<br />Warning – Correct Behavior<br />Demerit 2-Reflection in back of the classroom<br />Demerit 3- Students is removed and placed in ISS room for the remainder of the class period and will complete a reflection<br />Demerit 4- 3:30-4:30 pm detention. If student continues to misbehave then a parent is called to pick up the student from school. <br />**4 or more demerits in one day = detention. <br />. <br />DETENTION NO-SHOW POLICY<br />If a scholar who is assigned detention for the day does not show up or fails to complete the entire prescribed sanction, the following process will be implemented:<br />The Dean of Scholars or his designee will attempt to contact parent/guardian and notify him or her of the scholar’s truancy.

Scholar will be required to serve his or her time the following school day..If the scholar does not serve the detention, he or she will be suspended for each number of detentions missed.<br />LEVEL 2: MAJOR INFRACTIONS (1-5 day OSS)<br />Level 2 major infractions are high intensity discipline issues that warrant the attention of the Dean of Scholars. <br />Intentional Major Property Damage – When a scholar intentionally damages school property beyond repair. This includes but is not limited to: writing on the walls of the bathroom, vandalism of classroom materials or supplies, intentional destruction of any school property or the property of another.<br />Fighting – When a scholar engages in aggressive physical contact where injury may or may not occur. This does not include pushing, shoving, or grabbing. Fighting is defined as hitting, punching, using any object as a weapon, kicking, or hair pulling with the intent to harm. Cases involving self-defense will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Scholars are expected to alert adults in all fighting situations and are never allowed to retaliate.<br />Harassment – When a scholar delivers disrespectful messages (verbal or gestural) to another person that includes, but is not limited to, threats, intimidation, obscene gestures, pictures, or written notes. Disrespectful messages include comments based on race, religion, gender, age, national origin, sexual orientation, exceptionalities, or personal appearance or matter.<br />Stealing – When a scholar is in possession of, having passed on, or being responsible for the removal of someone else’s property of a value of $20 or more or any teacher’s property of any value.<br />Skipping Class/Truancy – When a scholar leaves class or school without permission, or stays out of class or school without permission.<br />Inappropriate Sexual Behavior – When a scholar or scholars engage in inappropriate sexual activity on school grounds, the bus, or on a school-sponsored outing or field trip.<br />Forgery – When a scholar has signed someone else’s name without that person’s permission.<br />Other – Any other infraction that the Dean of Scholars or Principal deems similar in severity to other level 2 infractions.<br />LEVEL 3: MAJOR INFRACTIONS (1-5 day OSS and notification of proper authorities<br />Level 3 major infractions are high intensity discipline issues that warrant attention of Dean of Scholars and possibly New Orleans Police Department, or other authorities.<br />Aggravated Assault – When a scholar assaults another scholar or school employee causing bodily injury.<br />Sexual Harassment or Sexual Assault – When a scholar makes inappropriate comments, gestures or images of a sexual nature about or towards another scholar or school employee.<br />Stealing – When a scholar is in possession of, having passed on, or being responsible for the removal of someone else’s property of a $100 value or more.<br />Causing or Making False Fire Alarms or Bomb Threats – When a scholar intentionally plans and/or makes a false fire alarm or bomb threat when no danger actually exists.<br />Arson – When a scholar plans and/or participates in malicious burning of property.<br />Weapons – When a scholar is in possession of knives, guns (real or look-alike) or other objects readily capable of causing bodily harm.<br />Drugs, Alcohol or Tobacco – When a scholar is in possession of or is using tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, or illegal drugs/substances or imitations.<br />For infractions involving possession, use or concealment of illegal drugs and firearms, the following steps must be implemented:<br />1. Mandatory student conference and school-level investigation<br />If the Dean of Scholars and/or Principal determines that a recommendation for expulsion is warranted:<br />2. Mandatory parental contact<br />3. Mandatory school-level conference<br />4. Mandatory referral to RTI team to complete FBA<br />5. Mandatory referral to the school social worker<br />6. Mandatory recommendation for expulsion and interim placement<br />7. Possible notification to the appropriate authorities.<br />For all other level three infractions, the following steps must be implemented:<br />1. Mandatory student conference and school-level investigation<br />If the Dean of Scholars and/or Principal determines that a recommendation for expulsion is warranted:<br />2. Mandatory parental contact<br />3. Mandatory school-level conference<br />4. If needed, referral to RTI team to complete FBA<br />5. Mandatory referral to the school social worker for assessment and, if necessary, referral to <br /> emergency mental health treatment or implementation of school-based treatment plan.<br />7. Possible notification to the appropriate authorities.<br />Level two and three infractions require an immediate out of school suspension.<br />
