5. Summarise the previous teaching week
Last week’s teaching notes concluded our introduction to the academic reading
component of the IELTS exam. Academic reading and academic listening skills are

passive language skills. The English language content has been created by another
party and you are required to interpret this material. We examine passive skills first in
this course and discuss active language skills - writing and speaking - in the latter half of
this course.
6. Introductory discussion to the topic
This section introduces the listening component of the IELTS Academic exam. As
stated by IELTS (2017),
“You will listen to four recordings of native English [language] speakers and then write
your answers to a series of questions.
Recording 1 – a conversation between two people set in an everyday social context.
Recording 2 - a monologue set in an everyday social context, e.g. a speech about local
facilities.
Recording 3 – a conversation between up to four people set in an educational or
training context, e.g. a university tutor and a student discussing an assignment.
Recording 4 - a monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a university lecture.
Assessors will be looking for evidence of your ability to understand the main ideas and
detailed factual information, the opinions and attitudes of speakers, the purpose of an

these notes (​i.e. part 8., below).
8. Topic discussion - further detail
The YouTube presentations offer some valuable advice about the ways in which you
can navigate some of the difficulties that students may encounter when they complete
the IELTS academic listening section. They also offer useful tips that aid you to prepare
for this component of the exam.
The speakers that you listen to may have any regional accent. Examples of regional
accents include Scottish, English (​i.e. from England) and American accents. The
speaker may speak with a hybrid accent. An example of a hybrid accent is a person

who is bilingual and speaks Chinese and English with an American accent . You should
practice listening to a range of accents prior to your exam. You may listen to podcasts
on YouTube and watch Hollywood movies as example of audio-visual sources. You
should practice listening to only audio sources also, as the IELTS listening exam is
entirely audio.
Discussion this week centers on two techniques that you may use to maximize your
performance when you complete the IELTS Academic reading section.
Simultaneous skills
There is a small break between each of the four components of the listening exam.
Some students struggle with the IELTS listening exam as you need to update your
answer sheet as the speaker continues to talk. IELTS are fair with this setup. You will
always have multiple seconds to write down your answer before the speaker offers a
pointer that requires you to select the next answer. You need to practice writing
answers and listening to the speak simultaneously prior to attending your live IELTS
exam.
Guessing answers based on context
If you are not sure what a speaker has said, you should make a logical guess based on
the topic. For example, imagine that a section of discussion in the IELTS listening exam
is about the weather in Florida. Vocabulary that may relate to this context includes

words such as sunny, warm, hot, tropical and humid. If you hear a word in the sentence
that you think sounds like humor, then you might logically guess that the word is ‘humid’
in this context. You should always try to hear the actual word spoken at all times and
use the logical guessing technique as a last resort.
9. Instructions for how to proceed after reading the instructor’s notes
Please watch the YouTube presentations listed above. Watching these YouTube
presentations is not optional. You need to watch these presentations in order to master
the skills required to successfully take part in the IELTS Academic listening
assessments.
Please listen to a sample listening exam question listed in section 4. of these notes. The
discussion notes for teaching week 6 will make more sense to you if you expose
yourself to at least two different official IELTS listening practice tests as soon as
possible.

We examine passive skills first in this course and discuss active language skills - writing and speaking - in the latter half of this course. 6. Introductory discussion to the topic This section introduces the listening component of the IELTS Academic exam. As stated by IELTS (2017), “You will listen to four recordings of native English [language] speakers and then write your answers to a series of questions. Recording 1 – a conversation between two people set in an everyday social context. Recording 2 - a monologue set in an everyday social context, e.g. a speech about local facilities. Recording 3 – a conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context, e.g. a university tutor and a student discussing an assignment. Recording 4 - a monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a university lecture. Topic discussion - further detail The YouTube presentations offer some valuable advice about the ways in which you can navigate some of the difficulties that students may encounter when they complete the IELTS academic listening section. They also offer useful tips that aid you to prepare for this component of the exam. The speakers that you listen to may have any regional accent. Examples of regional accents include Scottish, English (​i.e. from England) and American accents. The speaker may speak with a hybrid accent. An example of a hybrid accent is a person
  • 5. 5 who is bilingual and speaks Chinese and English with an American accent . You should practice listening to a range of accents prior to your exam. You may listen to podcasts on YouTube and watch Hollywood movies as example of audio-visual sources. You should practice listening to only audio sources also, as the IELTS listening exam is entirely audio. Discussion this week centers on two techniques that you may use to maximize your performance when you complete the IELTS Academic reading section. Simultaneous skills There is a small break between each of the four components of the listening exam. Some students struggle with the IELTS listening exam as you need to update your answer sheet as the speaker continues to talk. IELTS are fair with this setup. You will always have multiple seconds to write down your answer before the speaker offers a pointer that requires you to select the next answer. You need to practice writing answers and listening to the speak simultaneously prior to attending your live IELTS exam. Guessing answers based on context If you are not sure what a speaker has said, you should make a logical guess based on the topic. For example, imagine that a section of discussion in the IELTS listening exam is about the weather in Florida. Vocabulary that may relate to this context includes
  • 6. 6 words such as sunny, warm, hot, tropical and humid. If you hear a word in the sentence that you think sounds like humor, then you might logically guess that the word is ‘humid’ in this context. You should always try to hear the actual word spoken at all times and use the logical guessing technique as a last resort. 9. Instructions for how to proceed after reading the instructor’s notes Please watch the YouTube presentations listed above. Watching these YouTube presentations is not optional. You need to watch these presentations in order to master the skills required to successfully take part in the IELTS Academic listening assessments. Please listen to a sample listening exam question listed in section 4. of these notes. The discussion notes for teaching week 6 will make more sense to you if you expose yourself to at least two different official IELTS listening practice tests as soon as possible. 10.
