TIPS ON HOW TO CLEAR IELTS SPEAKING
IELTS is the International English Language Testing System which tests students on their English
language proficiency. It has mainly four sections. Speaking is the section where students often have a lot
of issues and keep wondering how they can get a good band score.
To get a good band score students must understand the structure, the pattern and the concept of the
exam, only then they will be able to perform well.
Structure of IELTS Speaking
There are mainly three parts in the Section.
Round One:
This is the first and the introduction round of the speaking test. Here mainly it is the information
seeking round where the main purpose is to make the students comfortable and get basic information
about their life and daily routine. Initially the examiner will ask the candidate’s name and nationality.
Then basic questions about the candidate’s routine life like hometown, educational background, career,
and country of origin, birthplace etc. and several questions may be asked related to that. The entire
conversation is recorded.
So overall simple questions are asked about daily routine or a candidate general life and lifestyle,
it goes on for around 4-5 minutes.
Round 2:-
This is the Topic CARD Round. Mainly here the candidate is given a topic to talk on for about 2-3
minutes. First they are provided with the topic, then 1 minute is given to think and write down points
about the topic. In the topic there is a main topic and there are 2-3 subtopics. So the candidate has to
consider all the questions in the topic and make a small consolidated speech.
Every candidate has maximum 2 minutes to speak. So it is not an interactive round. The overall round
goes on for around 3-4 minutes.
Round 3
- This is also known as the discussion round. This round depends on the Round 2 as the examiner will ask
certain general and global topics and questions related to the presentation or speech given by the
student in Round 2. Here candidates have to mainly express their views and opinions on the question
asked. This round lasts for around 4-5 minutes.
So overall there are three rounds in the speaking Section which go on for around 14-15 minutes.
Things considered for providing Band SCORES:
1. Fluency is extremely important while speaking. That is always assessed by the examiner. They
will check how smoothly a candidate speaks English.
2. They also check how well a candidate connects all the points together and links all the thoughts
together. They check if a candidate is able to logically put his points across in such a manner that
is easy to understand by the examiner.
3. Grammar is one of the most important things that are checked as finally is an English Test so
grammar has to be accurate.
4. Pronunciation is also important as words should be clearly pronounced and they should be
easily understood by the examiner.
So these are certain main points on which evaluation of the speaking test is done.
Let us see some general queries asked by Students about the Speaking Test:
 One common question asked by students is that if they can ask the examiner to repeat the
question or explain the question if they do not understand it. So the answer for this is yes, they
can ask for clarification. The examiner may repeat the question or may also re phrase it for
better understanding of the question. The only problem would be if a student misunderstands a
question and answers completely unrelated to the question asked.
 Sometimes unfortunately students may land up in a situation where they go quite blank in the
round 2 and have absolutely no knowledge about the topic they have been given. In such cases
the students must be prepared with certain phrases and good vocabulary in English which gives
an idea to the examiner that they are not aware of the topic. Lime for e.g. “I am not really good
talking about topics like these” or “I am not really not aware about this topic”, or I apologize but
I really don’t have a clue about this topic”. So few lines like these should be prepared by
students in advance to tackle unfortunate situations like these. It will make things easier.
 One important thing that students should understand, especially those who are aiming for band
7 and above is that they must try and use good, a little complex vocabulary and grammar so as
to show their English Proficiency and level of their language. Thus will help them in achieving a
band score.
 Students should realize that is okay to make a few mistakes while speaking high level English
and vocab, but using very simple and Basic English will not really help them in getting high band
score of 7 and above.
 Another query students have is regarding Accents. Students often feel that if they have strong
accents they will lose out on the high score. However that is not the case. Till the time the
examiner is able to understand you it is alright to have an accent.
