in Pennsylvania during 1907. I researched this image on ARTstor by using the term
realism and then I narrowed down my search by selecting a filter to return paintings
as well as setting the geography filter to North America. The painting belongs to The
Metropolitan Museum of Art s collection and is on display in the American Wing in
the gallery of Images of Womanfrom 1880 to 1910.
I selected this painting because the colour contrast of the pink dress against the dark
background caught my eye. I also found the expression of the young woman to be

My upbringing is atypical compared to most white, middle class females, I would

Literary Analysis: The American Dream
The century old concept of the American Dream is the belief that no matter what
race, gender, religion or background a person is from, she/he has the ability to
become successful through the means of hard work and determination. Unlike today,
Americans during the 1920s lived in the illusion that achieving the American Dream
involved immoral actions and only the satisfaction of their greedy pleasures. This led
to the compromise of moral values and noble actions and in turn allowed their vices
to control their character. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, it is revealed how the
corrupt American Dream resulted in consequences for both the good hearted and self
absorbed people of the East. Throughout his novel, Fitzgerald conveys his views on
how the illusion of the American Dream influenced the actions, beliefs and dreams of
the People during the Roaring Twenties.
The use of the green light as a motif helps to symbolize Gatsby s version of the

The Nike of Samothrace is a freestanding statue of a winged, female body dating
back to 190 BCE. The entire sculpture stands approximately 18 feet tall on a
pedestal that is shaped very similarly to the front section of a ship. Her body
measures around 9 feet while the smaller base she is connected to measures around
1 foot in height. The larger, disconnected, piece that mimics front section of a ship is
around 6 feet tall. Made of a very highly prized material in ancient Greece, the Nikeof
Samothraceis made solely from Parian marble, which is white in color. The statue
has no arms and no head and looks as if she is preparing to land on the pedestal
below her as it is moving forward. She wears a long gown that reaches all the way to
her feet with her wings stretched out in the back. This sculptor gave great attention to
the entire piece and to the gracefulness of her movements and beauty of her body.
Through intricate work and important textures, The Nike of Samothrace displays

This statue is in decent condition given its age but does still have a sufficient
amount of damage. We can clearly see that both the right and left arms have been

and head should be a much rougher texture, but that texture was not intentional when

found to be not only insightful, but also beneficial to me as I assess my patients

Everyday at noon the mechanics sat down for lunch and I joined them. Around that
lunch table they imparted to me several stories over the course of several weeks
about some of the things they had experienced and ways in which they had actually
taken advantage of paying customers. One mechanic told me how he watched his
boss sell several very expensive engine parts to a little old lady. He told me that he
had to leave the area because he started laughing so hard because of all the
unnecessary parts his boss was selling the woman. However he did nothing to step
