allegory. The following section of James book, Hawthorne, is often quoted as
evidence of this:
I frankly confess that I have as a general thing but little enjoyment of it [allegory] and
that it has never seemed to me to be, as it were, a first rate literary form...it is apt to
spoil two good things a story and a moral; a meaning and a form.... (Hawthorne 23)
It is based on this quote that Joan Bennett claims that it would be wrong to read the
works of James as allegory (16). But Bennett is wrong. Washington Square has many
concrete features of narrative allegory. As an allegory, it is an explicit warning about
