AIDS And Homophobia In Jonathan Demme s Film Philadelphia
In 1993 director Jonathan Demme s film Philadelphia was released into theaters. The film
Philadelphia follows the struggle of Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks) a gay lawyer who is fired by his
law firm after finding out he had AIDS. The movie deals with Andrews struggle not only with his fight
to live but also the ignorance society held for the illness. The film tackled the issue of AIDS and
homophobia and helped to destigmatize a subject that some may felt uncomfortable discussing
(Philadelphia : Oscar Gives Way to Elegy). Jonathan Demme used his platform for creating a story
that would rise above the stigma that AIDS beard and brought the conversation to the general public.

New Negro
The Harlem Renaissance from 1919 to 1930 s was a time for United States to rapidly change,
especially with the rise of the generation we refer to as African Americans today. It was an era of
literature, an era of slavery, and an era that made the biggest impact in the history of United States.
The term Negro refers to someone of the black race or black ancestry and it defines as black in
Spanish and Portuguese. African American scholar Alain Locke defines the New Negro as an
outspoken advocacy of dignity and refusal to the law of Jim Crow racial segregation. Locke
popularized this term during the Harlem Renaissance. Leaders of the past and many people today
object the term because of its long history of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Senator John C. Calhoun sees the positives of slavery, I believe when two races come together which
have different origins, colors, and physical and intellectual characteristics, that slavery is, instead of an
evil, a good, a positive good. I believe that Senator Calhoun is referring to the diversity of United
States, where multiples races get together and share their unique backgrounds. I agree with this
statement because diversity is a huge part of United States and without it, I believe the country wouldn
t be as successful as it is today. Dr. Martin Luther King states, Anyone who lives in the United States
can never be considered an outsider anywhere in this country. He has a similar opinion as Senator
Calhoun. Both leaders believe that U.S. should welcome any race with equality and should be

The Justification Of Absolutism By Thomas Hobbes
A form of government ruled by one person whose authority is not restricted by law or governing
bodies is absolutism. It is arguable if this form of government can truly be successful due to its
impression left throughout the course of history. Justification of absolutism by Thomas Hobbes,
Jacques Benigne Bossuet, and analysis of Louis XIV rule reveal why absolutism in ineffective. Due to
its removal of self authority, vulnerability to a power, and the possibility of weakening a country make
absolutism inefficient.
Thomas Hobbes was an English Philosopher and the author of Leviathan. In it, he justifies absolutism
by explaining his belief that people will always have conflicts by nature. He states, And therefore, as
long as his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He encouraged that subjects do not listen to the voice of God, and only their ruler. Bossuet, however,
believed that God possesses all power and rulers were anointed by Him. Bossuet states, But kings,
although their power comes from on high, as has been said, should not regard themselves as masters
of that power to use it at their pleasure; . . . they must employ it with fear and self restraint, as a thing
coming from God and of which God will demand and account (Bousset). Although his views are
similar to those of Hobbes, Bossuet s theory of absolutism is favorable because God is the head of
government. Nonetheless, this still leaves civilians in the hands of their rulers, who can falsely say
they have a divine right to the throne.
A European monarch that heavily enforced absolutism throughout his reign is Louis XIV. He is known
as the Sun King and for his statement I am the State. Louis had no tolerance toward Protestants, and
believed in the motto one king, one law, one faith. Due to this, he revoked the Edict of Nantes.
Following with the Edict of Fontainebleau, Louis ordered the destruction of Protestant churches,
closure of Protestant schools, and expulsion of Protestant clergy. After this, a great number of
Protestants fled, resulting in France s loss of much of its labor force. It led to the decline of his reign
and the country itself. Throughout his reign, Louis was able to enrich the French

Quinceanera Essay
A quinceañera is the celebration of a girls fifteenth birthday. It is a huge celebration in the spanish
culture. It is first step into womanhood, for a girl. It gives thanks to God thanks for his blessings, and
to present a young lady to the community. In the United States, this occasional celebration would be
called a sweet sixteen , even though it s not a fifteenth birthday. The way this was celebrated in
mexico is a little different than when hispanics celebrate it in the United States.
The Quinceanera tradition started many years ago when the Spanish conquerors brought the tradition
to Mexico and others say the tradition originated with the Aztecs. During the 1400s and early 1500s,
young girls were considered marriage ready at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

At a traditional quince, the girl of honor will usually wear a ball gown, along with her Court of Honor

society, that is now being given to the young woman), cross or medal (signifies faith in God, in
herself, and in her world), bible, or prayer book and rosary (Important resources to keep the word of
God in her life). These gifts would be given out by the Padrinos (also known as the godparents and/or
sponsors). The crowning of the tiara is traditionally done by the parents, along with the presenting of
the scepter. The parents will optionally present three roses to represent the stages of life, infancy,

How To Write An Essay On Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln had a very extraordinary life. He has done lots of different things such as being a
lawyer, and a president. His childhood was very different than most others. He was a farm boy looking
for a good education, he had to work on the farm and study hard to become the man that he becomes.
Abraham Lincoln, one of the most loved and admired presidents, he lived an exemplary life from his
early days of struggling to attain an education to his final years as one of the most renowned
presidents of the United States.
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Hardin County Kentucky. He was raised in a
cabin on the Frontier. His father s name is Thomas Lincoln, He was a carpenter and a farmer. There is
very little known about Thomas Lincolns mother Nancy Hanks, she died in 1818. She died a little
after the family moved in to the wilds of spencer county Indiana. Abraham s father married a kind of
affectionate woman Sarah Bush, He was married several times (Infoplease).
Abraham became a surveyor for a time, was village postmaster, and did various jobs, including rail
splitting. All the while he sought to improve his education and study law. The story of a brief love

American Intervention In Foreign Affairs
American Intervention Ever since its rise to global power in the early 20th century, the United States
has been involved in countless foreign affairs. Said involvement has really influenced how the United
States should look at foreign affairs today. In essence, being the lone Superpower of the modern
world, the United States acts like the World s Policeman. While on paper, this idea of having a World
Policeman may seem like a great idea, since there will always be that one nation standing by with the
intent of protecting shared ideals around the globe. However, actually putting this idea into practice
says otherwise. Taking a look back at the outcomes of recent military interventions, specifically the

Based on a 2013 CNN report by Hans Blix, a Swedish Diplomat and former Swedish Minister for
Foreign Affairs, the [Iraq] war aimed to eliminate weapons of mass destruction, but there weren t any
(Blix). In addition, Mr. Blix mentions the intent of eliminating the Al Qaeda terror group in Iraq, but
the terrorist group didn t exist in the country until after the invasion (Blix). Moreover, Mr. Blix
elaborates by also stating how the locals of Iraq may have been against the 2003 invasion of the
United States. He elaborates by saying that intent of entering Iraq was to set it up as a friendly base for
U.S. troops capable to act, if needed, against Iran but instead [the invasion] gave Iran a new ally in
Baghdad (Blix). Needless to say, this evidence can be used to explain why the initial entrance to Iraq
was a bad idea from the start. Ten years later, Stephanie Condon of CBS writes, Americans are still
politically divided over the war, though most say the U.S. should have avoided it (Condon). In
addition, she too elaborates that there was evidence that year [2004] that the war was not going as
planned such as the lack of weapons of mass destruction (Condon). With all of that information
established it really is no surprise to see why Americans and Iraqis alike were frustrated with the ever
lasting occupation of Iraq, which ultimately ended in 2011. However, with the phasing out of al Qaeda
and the rise of the Islamic State in the area, as well as airstrikes being conducted against the latter of
the two, controversies are again rising, discussing if the United States should be leading and carrying

The Meaning Of Seven Pesky Flies
If you had killed seven pesky flies, would you have stitched a belt chronicling the feat, and strutted
around wearing it like a proud peacock? I don t think you would. Any decent person would not be so
proud of himself. A reasonable person would not lie and say that the flies were actually giants. Yet the
tailor in the tale Seven in one blow did exactly that. And anyone who is that self centered is not
admirable. One day, a tailor who is vexed with some hosehold flies, takes an irrtated swipe at them,

Why The Convicts Were Sent To Australia
The movement of people around the world has a long history, with many migrations having been
forced. With the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade spanning over 400 years, dating back to the 1400s, the
forced transportation of Africans to Europe and the Americas gave rise to cheap labour and justifiable
racism. Also utilised as cheap labour, British convicts were transported against their will to a foreign
settlement in the eighteenth century, however, the way that both groups were treated greatly differed.

The conditions in England were so bad people were forced to steal basic items such as food and

England had average wages and most were caught stealing, the Americans had told England that there
were to be no more convicts to be sent there, therefore England were forced to send the convicts to
Australia. The English benefited by the reduced prison population. The circumstances of the convicts

Salted Pork, Beef. Mutton, Damper and fresh meat, they were fed 3 times a day. If a convict disobeyed

Verbal Irony In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter
The crooked toothed dentist looks downward upon his fearful client. Wait, a crooked toothed dentist?
Ironic, isn t it. Irony is a clever literary device that many authors use to make the audience stop and
ponder what has been said, emphasize a central topic or idea, or do both. Nathaniel Hawthorne, being
the exceptional author that he is,uses each of the three types of irony, verbal, dramatic, and situational,
to affirm his simple truth, Be true! Be true! Be true! throughout his novel. This chair is as comfortable
as sitting on nails. Verbal irony is when a character or narrator says something the expresses the
opposite of what is actually meant and, moreover, it is quite effortless to incorporate into a novel.

If he had simply confessed to his crime earlier, Chillingworth may not have chosen to seek vengeance
seeing that the reverend has already reaped what he sowed. While the firefighters of New York City
are out on duty, their fire station burns down. Situational irony is when what happens directly
contradicts what was expected to happen. In the case of Hawthorne s novel, situational irony is shown
predominantly in the final scaffold scene. Dimmesdale, on the scaffold with Hester and Pearl,
confesses his sin to the onlookers below and he assumes that his guilty conscience will be cleansed
and he will live on a happy life. Conversely, though, he collapses on the scaffold and promptly dies.
To quote the bible, from John 8:32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
Dimmesdale s confession to the community set him free of Chillingworth s grasp, as well as his
human binds. As the reverend, he must believe in the Christian s version of the afterlife, so his death
brought to him arguably by God himself, frees him of the terrible puritan community. Irony has been a
staple in literature centuries before Hawthorne s time and continues to work centuries later in today s
writing. The first

Specific Heat Lab Report
Have you ever wondered why a fire burns orange, or why a lighter burns blue towards the bottom of
the flame? If we take a quick step back, this is mostly due to a chemical reaction that is known as the
specific heat . This must be achieved (as well as the other two properties that every fire is required to
possess in order to burn) in order for a flame to become present. After this specific heat is reached, a
chemical reaction occurs and turns the fuel source of the fire into a vapor. The aspects that are
required for a flame to be created are a heat source, some sort of fuel, as well as some sort of oxidizing
agent. The only way that a change in flame color can be observed is by manipulating the fuel source.
After we manipulate the source

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Alternative Dispute...
There are different forms of alternative dispute resolutions, each having advantages and
disadvantages. The key to understanding the advantages and disadvantages of the forms of dispute
resolutions is the be knowledgeable of the meaning and the use of alternative dispute resolution.
Alternative Dispute Resolution is said to, offers parties alternative means of resolving their differences
outside actual courtroom litigation and the costly preparation for it , (Jennings, M., 2015 pg. 101).
Arbitration is one form of dispute resolution. Arbitration is defined as the, oldest form of ADR and
was once the most popular form of alternative dispute, but its increasing costs and time commitment
have found businesses and lawyers labeling it, no different from litigation (Jennings, M., 2015 pg.
101). The advantages of arbitration include; the members of both parties agree to have the same
arbitrator, someone both sides trust. Other advantages include; the process of arbitration is quicker
than waiting on a court date, the fees are not expensive as it is when paying court fees, there is very
limited chances that an appeal will happen, and there is more privacy in arbitration compared to
having a trial. The disadvantages of arbitration are; once a decision is made it is final because both
parties gave up the right to an appeal, in some cases the arbitrator fees can be more expensive
depending on the evidence needed, any evidence can be considered in arbitration unlike in court

Mr. Gotta Go Faster Than Anyone Else represents the simple yet dark humor of the late Roger Brown.
Brown painted this piece in 1986 during his first years of living in California after moving away from

way his art correlated with the events of the time, but he argues these claims by saying that his
artwork is simply a visual agenda (Calamities Conform to the Canvas). The artistic style of Brown

many governing agencies that had to do with woman s rights were closed. Brown put Mr in the title of
the piece because it was mostly men who were chasing their dreams and being supported during the
era. The woman in the bright red car is screaming at the man because he was the one who was in

Compare And Contrast Dulce Et Decorum And Who s For The Game
The two World War I based poems Dulce et Decorum by Wilfred Owen, and Who s for the Game? by

Intelligence In Law Enforcement
1. The value and significance of intelligence in law enforcement activities has been growing since the
events of 9/11 when it became apparent that the world s most powerful nation was unable to protect its
people from uneducated goat herders, who chose to carry out terrorist activities. One can spot claims
that the CIA and other intelligence agencies knew about the upcoming terrorist attacks, they were
unable to effectively coordinate their activities with the police to apprehend the terrorists (Conser,
2014). The Madrid and London Metro bombings in 2008 and the 2015 2016 terrorist attacks in Europe
(France, Brussels) again showed that police could only react to preplanned attacks and thus was rather
inefficient and ineffective. Since terrorism becomes a major threat, the need for police to have updated
(or real time) intelligence information available on their computers to better react to the threats
(Spindlove, 2015). What is more important, since the street level officers work among citizens in the
community, with access to proper intelligence information, they can be the first to face, stop and frisk
and apprehend terrorists or other criminals before they engage in crime. Therefore, the value and
significance of intelligence in law enforcement activities will continue to grow in foreseeable future.

Analysis Of Graham Norton s The Television Industry
The word genre has different meaning to different people. Lealand and Martin (2001) explain how the
television industry uses the term to categories and identify the various parts of its programming mix.
The audiences use it to identify and choose their viewing preferences (p. 59). The Graham Norton
Show comes under the genre of a celebrity talk show, but holds its own comedic spin. Norton creates
uniqueness to the show through the way he cracks jokes and interacts with his audience and guests.
The show begins with a witty introductory monologue of who will be on the show, then moves into
the classic couch interviews, and finishes with a celebrity music performance, conventions that all fit
with the talk show genre (Miller, Boddy Shattuc, 2008). The show focuses largely on the guests and
their lives, along with promoting what they are currently involved in, relating it back to the purpose of
the talk show genre (Miller, Boddy Shattuc, 2008). A subcategory of this genre is a late night celebrity
talk show, which The Graham Norton Show can also come under. According to Timberg, Bernard and
Robert (2010), the late night version is based on congenial, playful encounters between guests and the
host, who is more often then not a singer or comedian (p. 7). This subcategory became popular on
television in the 1950s, and increased in popularity thanks to shows such as The Tonight Show
(Timberg, Bernard and Robert, 2010). Since then they have become a lighter form of

Essay on Robert Ressler Coined the Term Serial Killer
We serial killers are your sons, we are your husbands, we are everywhere. And there will be more of
your children dead tomorrow. (Ted Bundy). Serial killers are not always those people that look like
monsters or behave in strangeous ways. Sometimes they are the successful people, the ones that have
a family and a job. The term Serial Killer was first coined by Robert Ressler, former director of the
FBI s Violent Criminal Apprehension Program. Serial killers are often defined as people that kill two
or more people over a period of more than 30 days with cooling off periods between each kill. Many
historical criminologists suggest that serial killing has been a component of society since the
beginning; suggesting that old stories ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The triad includes fire setting, animal cruelty, and enuresis (bed wetting). A highly debate issue around
serial killers is the reason behind their actions. Although many theories exist about the reason why
serial killers act the way they do, the most common theory is that they are searching for some type of
psychological satisfaction. A very common theory behind the reason of the actions of serial killers is
the social control theory. This theory states that serial killers behave the way they do due to their
inability to cope and adapt to society. Another well known theory is the neutralization theory. This
theory states that murderers sometimes move from an invisible baseline and commit illegal actions
while sometimes moving back and acting in a conventional way. The last theory is the labeling theory.
This theory, created by Erving Goffman, states that people act the way they do due to the labels that
society has created for them. Therefore, if a kid is labeled as a troublemaker at a very young age, it is
more likely that he will continue with this behavior through adulthood. From Ted Bundy to BTK to
the Zodiac Killer , serial killers have been around the United States for a long time, but none is better
than Richard Chase, or better known as the Vampire of Sacramento , to investigate the reasons behind
serial killers. Born on May 23, 1950, Chase was raised in a very strict house and was constantly

The Olympics Between Dark Millennium And The Iron Age
Introduction
In the past one hundred years, a large number of Bronze Age seal have continuously unearthed in the
Gulf region. Through the excavation and research of these finds, archaeologists have found that these
seals can reflect the economic, political and cultural development of the Gulf states in the Bronze Age.
The Bronze Age is the time between Dark Millennium and the Iron Age, c. 3200 1300 BC, which, in
archaeology, are usually divided into four periods:
1) Late Bronze Age (1600 1300 BC)
2) Wadi Suq (2000 1600 BC)
3) Umm al Nar (2500 2000 BC)

In ancient times, the convenience of geography made communication possible which is undeniable,
however, there are different opinions on the direction, intensity and breadth of the exchange.
Examples of long distance exchange in prehistory (Reade, 2008): Copal beads; Goat bones and Clove
head.
The most significant exchange is economy including local trade and interregional trade. As Reade
(2008) suggested above that the importance of the overland trade between east and west was equal to
the maritime trade via Persian Gulf, nonetheless ships had dozens of advantages over caravan. While
the most widely accepted view is the seafaring trade route is more important, especially for the trade
exchange between Mesopotamia and Indus via Bahrain ().
From a political point of view, after comparing Dilmun seals and the contemporary royal cap of
Mesopotamia, Højlund (2000) believe that the seal imitated the shape of the royal cap, and thereby it
was endowed with the power of king and the authority of gods. Conversely, some other researches
states that, as an example of Dilmun society, as a means of organizing trade and social management,
seals are used by both individuals and officials (Larsen, 2010).

Examples Of Passion In King Lear
Practice can make things perfect, but it is the passion that persuades them. In King Lear, Lear s first
phase of development is about his wild enthusiasm (passion). First and foremost of the play, Lear
enters his castle and begins to discuss the division of Britain between his daughters: Goneril, Regan,
and Cordelia. Lear says that he will transfer his throne, but whoever expresses greater amount of their
affection shall get the largest bounty; Which of you shall we say doth love us most? (1.1.52). While
Goneril and Regan succeed in their flattery; Lear s energetic love is destroyed in light of the fact that
Cordelia did not exaggerate her love towards her father. This outcomes in King Lear abandoning and

In King Lear, the theme of nature and storm echoes Lear s internal turmoil and madness. In the
meantime, the storm symbolizes the marvellous power of nature, which compels the powerless ruler to
perceive his own mortality. The chaos also symbolizes the political confusion that has overwhelmed
Britain. One of the points that relate to the theme of storm is Lear s cruel nature. In Act 1, Lear arrives
at the Duke s (Albany) castle. After a while, Goneril comes in search for Lear and tells him that if he
has to remain in her royal residence, he must lessen the number of his knights. Lear enrages again

William Shakespeare s Henry The Iv
OPENING Heroism in Henry the IV has many different interpretations. The different views that
Shakespeare examines defines heroism based by one s individual idea of what heroism means to them
and by their values. Shakespeare also explores the two different origins of heroism one from a modern
era and the second from the current to earlier period of time. Shakespeare intertwines honour and
heroism into one. Hotspur portrays the idea of a dramatic hero in his time, this heroism is displayed by
his reputation and sanctity his name. Hotspur seeks self honour this is seen when his willingness to
lead a rebellion against the injustices he sees the King has made by leading men into battle and
sacrifice his life in the name of honour. Fueling the desire Hotspur seeks of an honorable man.
PARAGRAPH 1 Hotspur is seen honourably through the eyes King Henry the IV. In the opening
scene act 1, we are introduced to King Henry IV. During the King s speech to his people of the court,
we get a solid understanding of how Hotspur is seen as an honourable man. The King proclaims his
jealousy of Lord Northumberland for having Hotspur as an honourable son, Yea, there thou makest me
sad and makest me sin / In envy that my Lord Northumberland (77 78). For the King sees Hotspur as a
man of honour, A son who is the theme of honour s tongue (80), while he views is own son as a
disappointment, See riot and dishonour stain the brow / Of my young Harry (84 85). Honour is this act

Incident Analysis Framework
The basic research question is that there is a relationship between intoxication, chronic alcohol use,
and violent behavior. Another research question that is stated in the article is if this relationship is a
causal relationship or if it is actually spurious. Other hypotheses made on adolescents were stated later
on in the article. The first one is that the relationship between drinking (prevalence and frequency) and
engaging in violence while sober is weaker than the relationship between drinking and violence. The
second hypothesis is that the relationship between quantity of drinking and engaging in violence while
sober is weaker than the relationship between quantity of drinking and violence and the relationship
between quantity of drinking and violence while drinking. The third hypothesis is that adolescents
who have a history of prior violence are more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The incident analysis did make some statements that are open to ecological fallacy. Ecological fallacy
is logical fallacy in the interpretation of statistical data where inferences about the nature of
individuals are deduced from inference for the group to which those individuals belong. The incident
analysis mainly focused on those who drink. The article stated that those adolescents who have a
history with violence may be prone to alcohol abuse. The other unit of analysis is the individual
analysis in which it was divided among three panels in order to be studied easier. The panels were
violent while sober, violent while drinking, and violent. The study used both cross sectional and
longitudinal designs. It used both designs since it gathered the data from the same objects and it
although it had several variables, it didn t quite find the cause and effect relationship in the purpose of
the article. Causal assertions were made. One of the causal assertions that were made was that the
relationship is mostly spurious and not exactly

Television Shows Based Around Family Life
Television shows based around family life have been around for many years. Back in the 1980 s and
1990 s, TV show families were more conservative, taught lessons ,didn t curse at each other, and
always seemed perfect . In todays age, shows show a plethora of technology, use slang, cursing, and
inappropriate jokes. The show Full House is your typical traditional family oriented television show.
The plot of the show comprised a husband and his three kids, D.J, Stephanie, and Michelle.Their
mother got killed in a tragic car accident leaving the husband,Danny Tanner, his best friend Joey and
brother in law Jesse to help raise the kids. Even though they don t have a mother figure to help raise
the family, they all work together to live a normal, happy, healthy life. On the contrast the show Bob s
Burgers is a cartoon that also shares a family orientation, but shows it in a more modern way. The
twenty first century show starts off with a family of five, A mother named Linda, Bob (The husband)
and their three kids, Louise, Tina and Gene. The family owns a restaurant called Bobs Burgers (which
they also live in) and goes about their everyday lives. Each episode introduces a problem a family
member goes through, whether its at school, the restaurant, or elsewhere. In the end they always
resolve it and this teaches a valuable lesson through family development, comic relief, and learned
morals. The first show, Full house aired its first episode in 1987 starting with Our

Review Of Michael Ignatieff s A Sense Of Belonging
A Sense of Belonging Arises
Based on 2004 Question 3
Michael Ignatieff, a Practice of Human Rights Professor, observed a key characteristic in how humans
relate and bond with one another: intuition shared within groups that helps set rules and regulations,
ultimately setting them apart. His observation calls into question the connection between these
unspoken rules, and the sense of belonging felt by group members. With his observations in mind, it is
natural to assume that unspoken rules and belonging coincide because they define a group by giving
them an image and general understanding of each other.
Often it is found that having common interests affects the people within, as well as the image of, a
certain group. When people think back ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consider sitting in your high school with multiple different groups of people around. You hear
numerous conversations coming from every direction and laughter filling the halls, but you are left
standing in the hallway alone, feeling outcast, because you have no connection with those people.
Having desolate feelings comes in response to this situation, and overall, it takes away from that sense
of belonging. The unspoken rules present in these groups are responsible for the loss of belonging.
People that do not fit the requirements within the rules often find themselves feeling as though they
are outcasts in society. Individually, they will perceive themselves to be outsiders without a belonging
in the social order because their traits do not match the desired ones in society. Additionally, the
people in each specific group will begin to exclude the said outcasts because they do not belong in the
clique. As a result, social events and conversations become more exclusive to those who fit the
unspoken rules. This unfortunately can lead to bullying, for the exclusive people will make the
outsiders feel unwelcomed and criticized. One who does not fit in with others will find themselves
feeling insecure about their life and role in the community. Therefore, the unspoken rules of society
affect each individual s sense of belonging in both a positive and negative

Why Incentive Plans Cannot Work
The article titled Why Incentive Plans Cannot Work by Alfie Kohn was very interesting. Rewards
offer temporary compliance that can ultimately destroy relationships among employees. It hinders the
ability to manage a company. It creates short term success and does not mean long term commitment.
In this, I find that incentives do not alter the attitudes that underlie behaviors. Incentives hinder
creativity and create competition. I concur that incentives also undermine interest.
We see in this article that incentives don t alter the attitudes that underlie behaviors. We think the

(Kohn) When it comes to incentives we find to learn to rewards rupture relationships. We read that
managers understand that coercion and fear destroy motivation and create defiance, defensiveness,
and rage. The KITA or Kick in the pants coined by Herzberg may produce movement but never
motivation. Yes when someone lights a fire under our butt it may help us move towards production for
a little but it won t ultimately motivate us for long term success. (Kohn)
Relationships among employees are often casualties of the scramble for rewards. Leaders of the Total
Quality Management movement have emphasized that incentive programs and performance appraisal
systems that accompany them reduce the possibilities for cooperation. Peter R. Scholtes, a senior
management consultant at Joiner Associates Inc. mentions that people are using the system for only
personal gain and the collective gain is thrown out the window. Without cooperation there will be no
quality in work. We learn that the competition for rewards will destroy cooperation. There are more
people who lose out on the rewards then who win. When the recognition of such rewards is publicized
through use of memos, newsletters etc. the result of losing is even more impactful to the employee.

The Application Of Genre Analysis And Phraseology
The application of genre analysis and phraseology has great potential to inform this kind of research
and practice, enabling us to receive a more thorough understanding of how language is used in a
particular context and/or in a particular genre. In this study, the textual analysis included inter rater
reliability analysis performed by two university instructors to code a portion of the texts. The analysis

the selection of multiword combinations to be included in the pedagogically useful list, apart from a

Social science teaches that a person s self identity is a reflection of that which other people put on the
individual, in other words a person s behavior steams more from what they see of themselves from
someone else s perspective and less from how they see themselves. In the case of the Mexicans, this
concept holds true. From that, which has been studied thus far this semester, Mexicans/ Mexican
Americans are good examples of this concept. Their sorted past has resulted in a new kind of Mexican

The play opens with the storeowner, Amano Sancho addressing the audience. Shortly thereafter a
women from the governor s office walks in looking for a young Mexican to be placed in the audience
at the governor s press conference. Immediately the audience is made aware of some of the social
differences amongst Mexicans. Amano has a very thick accent, the woman from the governor s office
introduces herself as Miss. Jiminez, but insist that it be pronounced with an American accent, when
Amano tries to pronounce it the way it suppose to she retorts with can t you speak English? It is
somewhat apparent that Miss. Jiminez does not recognize her Latino, most likely Mexican, heritage
even though it is all over her, her brown skin to be exact. Luis makes the audience aware of this at a

The Gender Struggle in A Streetcar Named Desire by...
After two world wars, the balance of power between the genders in America had completely shifted.
Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named Desire is a harsh, yet powerful play that exposes the reality of
the gender struggle. Williams illustrates society s changing attitudes towards masculinity and
femininity through his eloquent use of dramatic devices such as characterization, dialogue, setting,
symbolism, and foreshadowing.
Stanley, the protagonist, is a symbol for society s view of the stereotypical male. He is muscular,
forceful, and dominant. Stanley s domination becomes so overwhelming that he demands absolute
control. This view of the male as a large animal is revealed in the opening of the play where Stanley is
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His statement that:
Be comfortable is my motto
is almost contradictory, considering that the character does all he can to put the other characters out of
their way, throughout the play. It is through dialogue such as this that audiences are alerted to the fact
that Stanley intrinsically fails to consider the implications his own needs and wants have on other
people. Instead he is the one in control, the only person invested with power and subsequent
command, therefore the only one taken into consideration. A final show of authority is his over
powering presence within the poker games. Here he makes powerful statements, passing judgements
on the symbolic game, and asserting dominance.
Nothing belongs on a poker table but cards, chips, and whisky.
It is he who sets such rules, allowing no other comment or opinion. Therefore, it is through using
techniques such as dialogue, stage directions, foreshadow, and character, that Tennessee Williams
foregrounds society s attitudes to masculinity within the text.
Just as a character is provided to represent the stereotypical male, one is also provided as a
representation of femininity. Stella fulfils society s preconceptions of femininity perfectly, though
from today s perspective they may be considered as misconceptions. Her character is absolutely
passive and has a largely domestic role. From her first appearance in the play, she is found in

Mongol Dbq Essay
I believe the mongols were barbaric and don t deserve to have the scale tip in their favor. In the first
slide it says the streets were filled with human flesh and fat, from women, children, and adults
regardless if they were a combatant or not. Another example would be the city of Riazan, it was razed
to the ground and it s inhabitants were all massacred, only a few were left alive to spread the message.
It s widely known that if you refused to surrender then the whole city would be massacred and raised
to the ground. (Doc1 3) Doc 1 3 talks about how the Mongol army was just more than a ragtag horde
of calvary. They had discipline and often implemented psychological warfare into their tactics, I.E.
attacking a city non stop so the defenders get no sleep or raising a city to the ground to send a
message. The mongols had a system where any deserters would either get killed or get their comrades
killed in their place, or if their comrades fail to rescue them, then their comrades will get executed. ...

The city had 3,000 crossbowmen but the mongols managed to breach the walls and raised the city to
the ground, and slaughtered it s inhabitants, including cats and dogs. It also mention other cities raised

of 30,000. Doc 5 depicts mongolians and their atrocities against arabs. Doc 6 it implied that the

The Outsiders In The Outsiders By S. E Hinton
The book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, Ponyboy forms a different identity throughout the book. At
the beginning of the book, Ponyboy s identity is an outsider to the greasers and to his community. He
does different things, like watch movies without being disturbing, he s good in school and he likes to
read books. Out of the gang Ponyboy didn t have friends. His gang doesn t read books or watch
movies like he does. The greasers just work hard and long on cars at gas stations. Ponyboy has
potential though, he is smart. Ponyboy s identity is different then the the others in his gang. On page 2,
it says, When I see a movie with someone it s kind of uncomfortable, like having someone read your
book over your shoulder. I m different that way. He felt like he was an outsider to everyone because he
was different. People in his gang had gone to jail and Ponyboy stayed good, different. In the text
Doing the Right Thing, four football players are different than other people. They did the right thing
when others would ve stolen. They acted different, like Ponyboy. They text said, Thomas James pulled
out $5 to cover the batteries and a video cord they needed, waved it at the surveillance camera above
the cash register and laid it on the counter... One of them took 80 cents out of his pocket and laid it on
the counter too. Tax. The four football players acted differently then how people normally do. Like
Ponyboy they don t act the same, they are good. Ponyboy s first identity is an

Basic Segmentation, Targeting and Positioning
Segmentation
When entering a market, an organisation needs to identify its customers and what its customer needs
are. A business can t go into a market with a product and expect to sell it, because the demand for the
product may not be there. It is important for the business to plan thoroughly before entering a market
and understand the diverse nature of a market. For example, a market may have large range of
consumers who have different tastes, preference and needs. So this is where the concept of
segmentation will be applied.
Segmentation is defined as the identification of individuals or organisations with similar
characteristics that have significant implications for the determination of marketing strategy . To break
this down, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Target marketing
An important part of marketing is selecting the market you want to enter to provide your products or
services. So once you have successfully used market segmentation to divide your market into
reasonable consumer segments, you then need to use targeting to choose the market you are going to
serve.
Choosing a market to serve is an extremely important decision a business will need to make, because a
bad decision at this stage could result in failure. To help make the right decision, a company should
use criteria to evaluate a market, for example: * Effective * Measurable * Accessible * Actionable *
Profitable (foot note) Another method of evolution would be the SMART objectives method: *
Specific * Measurable * Achievable * Realistic * Time scaled
Either way, an organisation should evaluate their potential market before entering them. There have
been cases where businesses have entered markets and failed, because they did not evaluate
effectively. In 2003, Burger King introduced a new line of chicken sandwiches aimed at appealing to a
more health conscious demographic (the BK Baguette Sandwiches). The product never caught on in
the U.S. and was quickly replaced with the TenderGrill Sandwich . It s evident that of a failing product
and more importantly evidence of poor marketing strategy. If burger king used targeting properly, the
product may have been more

House of Sand and Fog, Analysis
Carlos Rivas
English 2341
Professor Scott Whitebird
March 10, 2011
The book and the movie of the same name, The house of sand and fog which is a movie about the
conflict that arises over who is rightful owner of a small bungalow along the California coastline. The
story in of itself is amazingly refreshing as the whole story doesn t really have a protagonist or
antagonist because at points in the story all characters are a little bit of both.
The book s and the follow up movie s main theme are about how different people s hopes can collide
and how dangerous it is when they do. (Perelman, 2003) The novel was well written and unique whilst
the movie follows along with the novel almost faithfully mostly because the author himself had a ...

He went from a wealthy apartment to Kathy s beach bungalow also in part because it reminded him of
a house he once had along the Caspian Sea. Behrani moves in quickly with his wife Naderah and his
son named Esmial and as the realtor noted that a widows walks would increase the value of the house
he quickly modifies the house in such a manner.
This leads to Kathy s deep insecurity that he would chose the normal family life over life with her and
that he certainly wouldn t want to start a family with her if he is leaving one behind as a part of her did
want to have kids and be a port of a family however the novel implies that her husband was not of the
best character. In the beginning of the book it starts off with the inner thoughts of the two main
protagonist similar to a science fiction novel DUNE, by Frank Herbert, this point of view is limited to
their thought and that alone is pretty interesting and descriptive, from the beginning you see the
discipline of Behrani s character compared to the lackadaisical attitude of Kathy Nicolo. Early on
Kathy finds herself sleeping in her car in the one place she felt safe, in front of her bungalow and
unbeknownst to her Behrani hired a contractor to build a widow s walk on top of the roof and as he
left she happens to wake up only to see two people tearing up her roof to which she

The Feasibility Of Miniature Horses Serving As Guide Animals
Introduction
I am an animal lover and have direct experience with dogs and horses due to the fact that I own six
horses and three dogs. I have always been amazed every time I see a service dog and its client. I have
always seen dogs used as the service animal. One day at work, I overheard one of my co workers
mentioned the use of miniature ponies as service animals. I was intrigued by the idea of a miniature
pony serving as a guide animal. They have mentioned studies being conducted on this subject, and I
have decided to make this my research topic for this class.
Purpose
The purpose for this research paper was to discover the feasibility of miniature horses serving as guide
animals. I know not all people like dogs or don t trust dogs. What are disabled persons choices in
service animals? How about disabled individuals that are allergic to dogs? I will research documents
on miniature horses used as service animals, identify the pros and cons of my subject, look for
examples demonstrating my subjects abilities, and examine the adaptability of dogs and miniature
horses.
Significance
I hope this study will give handicapped or people who are challenged with every day task a choice of
what animal will be their service partner. I always see dogs as service animals, and I would like to find
out if they can have a choice. I know a lot of people that do not like dogs or are allergic to dogs. This
research could provide answers to issues with service animals and their

Kevin Mitnick s Conviction
Kevin Mitnick will forever live in infamy after a lifetime entrenched in the hacker community as both
a black hat and white hat hacker. He is likely most well known for his high profile arrest in 1995, his
second criminal conviction, after which he began work as a security consultant. Today, Mitnick runs
Mitnick Security Consulting, LLC testing security for both Fortune 500 companies and the FBI. This
is in stark contrast to his humble beginnings in the LA area at 13 years old, in 1976, when Mitnick
would find bus tickets in the trash and use specialized ticket punchers to get free bus rides. Free bus
rides came as a result of Mitnick s ingenuity and his primary tool, social engineering. Mitnick soon
added computer hacking to his repertoire in 1979 when he acquired ... Show more content on

Many considered his punishment to be too harsh, arguing that he was excessively punished and that he
did not cause any actual losses worthy of such a conviction. This speaks to the ethics practiced by
Mitnick who always asserted that he was not a malicious hacker, never using his exploits for
substantial financial gain, but merely practiced hacking out of curiosity and as a means of
demonstration. Mitnick would use this mentality to build a security consulting firm and as a board
member for Zimperium, a firm that develops systems to prevent mobile intrusion. Kevin Mitnick has
spent his entire life taking advantage of technological exploits, building a skill set that would give him
unprecedented access to some of the highest profile computer networks in the world. He will always
be remembered for his 1995 arrest, but will also go down as a pioneer for both black hat and white hat
hackers. He serves as an excellent case study for where the line between ethical and unethical
decisions lie in a very murky world that is becoming more and more connected every

The Reign Of The Holy Roman Empire
On Christmas day of 800 A.D., Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne the Holy Roman Emperor. This
pivotal, but not necessarily wanted, moment in the history of the Catholic Church set up a precedent
for very strong relations between the Holy Roman Emperor and the papacy. During the eleventh
century, with the Holy Roman Emperor ruled by Henry IV, relations with the papacy came to a front
over several disagreement between Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII. Their arguments mainly focused
on the power that each institution should hold. Gregory felt that the papacy should play a larger
political role in the western church and that lay investiture was against the will of God. Henry was
conservative and did not want Rome intruding any more on his rule of the Holy Roman Emperor and
accused Gregory of being a usurper and a fraud. In the midst of this argument, Gregory released
various decrees, known as the Dictatus Papae, which greatly increased the power of the Papacy while
reducing that of the Holy Roman Empire. The mere fact that Gregory felt the need to issue these
decrees, in combination with the harsh reaction of Henry IV and the Bishops of Germany, prove that
the papacy did not have effective authority over the Western church and institution.
The imposition of the Gregorian reforms alone and the Pope s defense of them show how the papacy
was not an institution of great authority in the Western church and lacked command among its
constituents. The Gregorian reforms were not, as the

The Pros And Cons Of Christopher Nolan
When auteur directors gets researched on Google, Christopher Nolan shows up in the list together
with other well known directors like Alfred Hitchcock, Quentin Tarantino, and Martin Scorsese.
Christopher Nolan is a British American film director, producer and screenwriter and seems to be
another filmmaker who takes pride in the title of auteur director. His films are a hit all around the
world and it can be argued whether or not his films are a distinct reflection of his creative vision.
Nolan was first recognized for his offbeat productions like Memento (2000) and is now responsible
for a number of blockbusters including The Dark Knight (2008) and Inception (2010). Nolan is
considered as one of the most accomplished filmmakers and an ... Show more content on

He is particularly known for writing and directing dark, mind bending drama and thriller films
considering his many productions. Nolan has quite a few blockbusters under his name and The
Telegraph actually titled him as the director who can do what he wants ; with the caption Christopher
Nolan s brainy blockbusters have earned him love not seen since Spielberg (2010). Nolan is very
popular right now among many different types of audiences. The reason for this is because Nolan does
not only provide audiences with big action pictures, but he does so on an intellectual level. A film like
Transformers (Michael Bay, 2007, USA) for example, which is solely about the action, and thus
entertainment, is not considered to be very high in its overall purpose. Nolan s films then stand out
and he is able to keep audiences engaged in his

  • 2. AIDS And Homophobia In Jonathan Demme s Film Philadelphia In 1993 director Jonathan Demme s film Philadelphia was released into theaters. The film Philadelphia follows the struggle of Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks) a gay lawyer who is fired by his law firm after finding out he had AIDS. The movie deals with Andrews struggle not only with his fight to live but also the ignorance society held for the illness. The film tackled the issue of AIDS and homophobia and helped to destigmatize a subject that some may felt uncomfortable discussing (Philadelphia : Oscar Gives Way to Elegy). Jonathan Demme used his platform for creating a story that would rise above the stigma that AIDS beard and brought the conversation to the general public. • 3. Alain Locke New Negro Sandra Paredes Class? Date? New Negro The Harlem Renaissance from 1919 to 1930 s was a time for United States to rapidly change, especially with the rise of the generation we refer to as African Americans today. It was an era of literature, an era of slavery, and an era that made the biggest impact in the history of United States. The term Negro refers to someone of the black race or black ancestry and it defines as black in Spanish and Portuguese. African American scholar Alain Locke defines the New Negro as an outspoken advocacy of dignity and refusal to the law of Jim Crow racial segregation. Locke popularized this term during the Harlem Renaissance. Leaders of the past and many people today object the term because of its long history of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Senator John C. Calhoun sees the positives of slavery, I believe when two races come together which have different origins, colors, and physical and intellectual characteristics, that slavery is, instead of an evil, a good, a positive good. I believe that Senator Calhoun is referring to the diversity of United States, where multiples races get together and share their unique backgrounds. I agree with this statement because diversity is a huge part of United States and without it, I believe the country wouldn t be as successful as it is today. Dr. Martin Luther King states, Anyone who lives in the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere in this country. He has a similar opinion as Senator Calhoun. • 4. The Justification Of Absolutism By Thomas Hobbes A form of government ruled by one person whose authority is not restricted by law or governing bodies is absolutism. It is arguable if this form of government can truly be successful due to its impression left throughout the course of history. Justification of absolutism by Thomas Hobbes, Jacques Benigne Bossuet, and analysis of Louis XIV rule reveal why absolutism in ineffective. Due to its removal of self authority, vulnerability to a power, and the possibility of weakening a country make absolutism inefficient. Thomas Hobbes was an English Philosopher and the author of Leviathan. In it, he justifies absolutism by explaining his belief that people will always have conflicts by nature. He states, And therefore, as long as his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He encouraged that subjects do not listen to the voice of God, and only their ruler. Bossuet, however, believed that God possesses all power and rulers were anointed by Him. Bossuet states, But kings, although their power comes from on high, as has been said, should not regard themselves as masters of that power to use it at their pleasure; . . . they must employ it with fear and self restraint, as a thing coming from God and of which God will demand and account (Bousset). Although his views are similar to those of Hobbes, Bossuet s theory of absolutism is favorable because God is the head of government. Nonetheless, this still leaves civilians in the hands of their rulers, who can falsely say they have a divine right to the throne. A European monarch that heavily enforced absolutism throughout his reign is Louis XIV. He is known as the Sun King and for his statement I am the State. Louis had no tolerance toward Protestants, and believed in the motto one king, one law, one faith. Due to this, he revoked the Edict of Nantes. Following with the Edict of Fontainebleau, Louis ordered the destruction of Protestant churches, closure of Protestant schools, and expulsion of Protestant clergy. After this, a great number of Protestants fled, resulting in France s loss of much of its labor force. It led to the decline of his reign and the country itself. Throughout his reign, Louis was able to enrich the French ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It gives thanks to God thanks for his blessings, and to present a young lady to the community. In the United States, this occasional celebration would be called a sweet sixteen , even though it s not a fifteenth birthday. The way this was celebrated in mexico is a little different than when hispanics celebrate it in the United States. The Quinceanera tradition started many years ago when the Spanish conquerors brought the tradition to Mexico and others say the tradition originated with the Aztecs. • 7. American Intervention In Foreign Affairs American Intervention Ever since its rise to global power in the early 20th century, the United States has been involved in countless foreign affairs. Said involvement has really influenced how the United States should look at foreign affairs today. In essence, being the lone Superpower of the modern world, the United States acts like the World s Policeman. While on paper, this idea of having a World Policeman may seem like a great idea, since there will always be that one nation standing by with the intent of protecting shared ideals around the globe. Based on a 2013 CNN report by Hans Blix, a Swedish Diplomat and former Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs, the [Iraq] war aimed to eliminate weapons of mass destruction, but there weren t any (Blix). In addition, Mr. Blix mentions the intent of eliminating the Al Qaeda terror group in Iraq, but the terrorist group didn t exist in the country until after the invasion (Blix). Moreover, Mr. Blix elaborates by also stating how the locals of Iraq may have been against the 2003 invasion of the United States. He elaborates by saying that intent of entering Iraq was to set it up as a friendly base for U.S. troops capable to act, if needed, against Iran but instead [the invasion] gave Iran a new ally in Baghdad (Blix). Needless to say, this evidence can be used to explain why the initial entrance to Iraq was a bad idea from the start. Ten years later, Stephanie Condon of CBS writes, Americans are still politically divided over the war, though most say the U.S. should have avoided it (Condon). In addition, she too elaborates that there was evidence that year [2004] that the war was not going as planned such as the lack of weapons of mass destruction (Condon). With all of that information established it really is no surprise to see why Americans and Iraqis alike were frustrated with the ever lasting occupation of Iraq, which ultimately ended in 2011. However, with the phasing out of al Qaeda and the rise of the Islamic State in the area, as well as airstrikes being conducted against the latter of the two, controversies are again rising, discussing if the United States should be leading and carrying out these ... • 12. Verbal Irony In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter The crooked toothed dentist looks downward upon his fearful client. Wait, a crooked toothed dentist? Ironic, isn t it. Irony is a clever literary device that many authors use to make the audience stop and ponder what has been said, emphasize a central topic or idea, or do both. Nathaniel Hawthorne, being the exceptional author that he is,uses each of the three types of irony, verbal, dramatic, and situational, to affirm his simple truth, Be true! Be true! Verbal irony is when a character or narrator says something the expresses the opposite of what is actually meant and, moreover, it is quite effortless to incorporate into a novel. If he had simply confessed to his crime earlier, Chillingworth may not have chosen to seek vengeance seeing that the reverend has already reaped what he sowed. While the firefighters of New York City are out on duty, their fire station burns down. Situational irony is when what happens directly contradicts what was expected to happen. In the case of Hawthorne s novel, situational irony is shown predominantly in the final scaffold scene. Dimmesdale, on the scaffold with Hester and Pearl, confesses his sin to the onlookers below and he assumes that his guilty conscience will be cleansed and he will live on a happy life. Conversely, though, he collapses on the scaffold and promptly dies. To quote the bible, from John 8:32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Dimmesdale s confession to the community set him free of Chillingworth s grasp, as well as his human binds. As the reverend, he must believe in the Christian s version of the afterlife, so his death brought to him arguably by God himself, frees him of the terrible puritan community. After this specific heat is reached, a chemical reaction occurs and turns the fuel source of the fire into a vapor. The key to understanding the advantages and disadvantages of the forms of dispute resolutions is the be knowledgeable of the meaning and the use of alternative dispute resolution. Alternative Dispute Resolution is said to, offers parties alternative means of resolving their differences outside actual courtroom litigation and the costly preparation for it , (Jennings, M., 2015 pg. 101). Arbitration is one form of dispute resolution. Arbitration is defined as the, oldest form of ADR and was once the most popular form of alternative dispute, but its increasing costs and time commitment have found businesses and lawyers labeling it, no different from litigation (Jennings, M., 2015 pg. 101). The advantages of arbitration include; the members of both parties agree to have the same arbitrator, someone both sides trust. Other advantages include; the process of arbitration is quicker than waiting on a court date, the fees are not expensive as it is when paying court fees, there is very limited chances that an appeal will happen, and there is more privacy in arbitration compared to having a trial. The disadvantages of arbitration are; once a decision is made it is final because both parties gave up the right to an appeal, in some cases the arbitrator fees can be more expensive depending on the evidence needed, any evidence can be considered in arbitration unlike in court ... • 18. Intelligence In Law Enforcement 1. The value and significance of intelligence in law enforcement activities has been growing since the events of 9/11 when it became apparent that the world s most powerful nation was unable to protect its people from uneducated goat herders, who chose to carry out terrorist activities. One can spot claims that the CIA and other intelligence agencies knew about the upcoming terrorist attacks, they were unable to effectively coordinate their activities with the police to apprehend the terrorists (Conser, 2014). The Madrid and London Metro bombings in 2008 and the 2015 2016 terrorist attacks in Europe (France, Brussels) again showed that police could only react to preplanned attacks and thus was rather inefficient and ineffective. Since terrorism becomes a major threat, the need for police to have updated (or real time) intelligence information available on their computers to better react to the threats (Spindlove, 2015). What is more important, since the street level officers work among citizens in the community, with access to proper intelligence information, they can be the first to face, stop and frisk and apprehend terrorists or other criminals before they engage in crime. Therefore, the value and significance of intelligence in law enforcement activities will continue to grow in foreseeable future. 2. • 19. Analysis Of Graham Norton s The Television Industry The word genre has different meaning to different people. Lealand and Martin (2001) explain how the television industry uses the term to categories and identify the various parts of its programming mix. The audiences use it to identify and choose their viewing preferences (p. 59). The Graham Norton Show comes under the genre of a celebrity talk show, but holds its own comedic spin. Norton creates uniqueness to the show through the way he cracks jokes and interacts with his audience and guests. The show begins with a witty introductory monologue of who will be on the show, then moves into the classic couch interviews, and finishes with a celebrity music performance, conventions that all fit with the talk show genre (Miller, Boddy Shattuc, 2008). The show focuses largely on the guests and their lives, along with promoting what they are currently involved in, relating it back to the purpose of the talk show genre (Miller, Boddy Shattuc, 2008). A subcategory of this genre is a late night celebrity talk show, which The Graham Norton Show can also come under. According to Timberg, Bernard and Robert (2010), the late night version is based on congenial, playful encounters between guests and the host, who is more often then not a singer or comedian (p. 7). This subcategory became popular on television in the 1950s, and increased in popularity thanks to shows such as The Tonight Show (Timberg, Bernard and Robert, 2010). • 20. Essay on Robert Ressler Coined the Term Serial Killer We serial killers are your sons, we are your husbands, we are everywhere. And there will be more of your children dead tomorrow. (Ted Bundy). Serial killers are not always those people that look like monsters or behave in strangeous ways. Sometimes they are the successful people, the ones that have a family and a job. The term Serial Killer was first coined by Robert Ressler, former director of the FBI s Violent Criminal Apprehension Program. Serial killers are often defined as people that kill two or more people over a period of more than 30 days with cooling off periods between each kill. Many historical criminologists suggest that serial killing has been a component of society since the beginning; suggesting that old stories ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The triad includes fire setting, animal cruelty, and enuresis (bed wetting). A highly debate issue around serial killers is the reason behind their actions. Although many theories exist about the reason why serial killers act the way they do, the most common theory is that they are searching for some type of psychological satisfaction. A very common theory behind the reason of the actions of serial killers is the social control theory. This theory states that serial killers behave the way they do due to their inability to cope and adapt to society. Another well known theory is the neutralization theory. This theory states that murderers sometimes move from an invisible baseline and commit illegal actions while sometimes moving back and acting in a conventional way. The last theory is the labeling theory. This theory, created by Erving Goffman, states that people act the way they do due to the labels that society has created for them. Therefore, if a kid is labeled as a troublemaker at a very young age, it is more likely that he will continue with this behavior through adulthood. From Ted Bundy to BTK to the Zodiac Killer , serial killers have been around the United States for a long time, but none is better than Richard Chase, or better known as the Vampire of Sacramento , to investigate the reasons behind serial killers. Review Of Michael Ignatieff s A Sense Of Belonging A Sense of Belonging Arises Based on 2004 Question 3 Michael Ignatieff, a Practice of Human Rights Professor, observed a key characteristic in how humans relate and bond with one another: intuition shared within groups that helps set rules and regulations, ultimately setting them apart. His observation calls into question the connection between these unspoken rules, and the sense of belonging felt by group members. With his observations in mind, it is natural to assume that unspoken rules and belonging coincide because they define a group by giving them an image and general understanding of each other. Consider sitting in your high school with multiple different groups of people around. You hear numerous conversations coming from every direction and laughter filling the halls, but you are left standing in the hallway alone, feeling outcast, because you have no connection with those people. Having desolate feelings comes in response to this situation, and overall, it takes away from that sense of belonging. The unspoken rules present in these groups are responsible for the loss of belonging. People that do not fit the requirements within the rules often find themselves feeling as though they are outcasts in society. Individually, they will perceive themselves to be outsiders without a belonging in the social order because their traits do not match the desired ones in society. Additionally, the people in each specific group will begin to exclude the said outcasts because they do not belong in the clique. As a result, social events and conversations become more exclusive to those who fit the unspoken rules. This unfortunately can lead to bullying, for the exclusive people will make the outsiders feel unwelcomed and criticized. One who does not fit in with others will find themselves feeling insecure about their life and role in the community. Jiminez, but insist that it be pronounced with an American accent, when Amano tries to pronounce it the way it suppose to she retorts with can t you speak English? It is somewhat apparent that Miss. Jiminez does not recognize her Latino, most likely Mexican, heritage even though it is all over her, her brown skin to be exact. Luis makes the audience aware of this at a key point near the end of the play. Miss. Jiminez wants to take her newly bought Mexican American straight to the governor s press conference so a brown face can be seen in the audience. Amano replays, you outta know , again pointing to the fact that this woman is Latina and completely unaware of it. Through her search the director points out many different kinds of Mexicans, or different Mexican identities that have existed in the past. • 37. The Gender Struggle in A Streetcar Named Desire by... After two world wars, the balance of power between the genders in America had completely shifted. Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named Desire is a harsh, yet powerful play that exposes the reality of the gender struggle. Williams illustrates society s changing attitudes towards masculinity and femininity through his eloquent use of dramatic devices such as characterization, dialogue, setting, symbolism, and foreshadowing. Stanley, the protagonist, is a symbol for society s view of the stereotypical male. He is muscular, forceful, and dominant. Stanley s domination becomes so overwhelming that he demands absolute control. This view of the male as a large animal is revealed in the opening of the play where Stanley is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His statement that: Be comfortable is my motto is almost contradictory, considering that the character does all he can to put the other characters out of their way, throughout the play. It is through dialogue such as this that audiences are alerted to the fact that Stanley intrinsically fails to consider the implications his own needs and wants have on other people. Instead he is the one in control, the only person invested with power and subsequent command, therefore the only one taken into consideration. A final show of authority is his over powering presence within the poker games. Here he makes powerful statements, passing judgements on the symbolic game, and asserting dominance. Nothing belongs on a poker table but cards, chips, and whisky. It is he who sets such rules, allowing no other comment or opinion. Therefore, it is through using techniques such as dialogue, stage directions, foreshadow, and character, that Tennessee Williams foregrounds society s attitudes to masculinity within the text. Just as a character is provided to represent the stereotypical male, one is also provided as a representation of femininity. Stella fulfils society s preconceptions of femininity perfectly, though from today s perspective they may be considered as misconceptions. Her character is absolutely passive and has a largely domestic role. From her first appearance in the play, she is found in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the first slide it says the streets were filled with human flesh and fat, from women, children, and adults regardless if they were a combatant or not. Another example would be the city of Riazan, it was razed to the ground and it s inhabitants were all massacred, only a few were left alive to spread the message. It s widely known that if you refused to surrender then the whole city would be massacred and raised to the ground. (Doc1 3) Doc 1 3 talks about how the Mongol army was just more than a ragtag horde of calvary. They had discipline and often implemented psychological warfare into their tactics, I.E. attacking a city non stop so the defenders get no sleep or raising a city to the ground to send a message. The mongols had a system where any deserters would either get killed or get their comrades killed in their place, or if their comrades fail to rescue them, then their comrades will get executed. ... A business can t go into a market with a product and expect to sell it, because the demand for the product may not be there. It is important for the business to plan thoroughly before entering a market and understand the diverse nature of a market. For example, a market may have large range of consumers who have different tastes, preference and needs. So this is where the concept of segmentation will be applied. Segmentation is defined as the identification of individuals or organisations with similar characteristics that have significant implications for the determination of marketing strategy . To break this down, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Target marketing An important part of marketing is selecting the market you want to enter to provide your products or services. So once you have successfully used market segmentation to divide your market into reasonable consumer segments, you then need to use targeting to choose the market you are going to serve. Choosing a market to serve is an extremely important decision a business will need to make, because a bad decision at this stage could result in failure. To help make the right decision, a company should use criteria to evaluate a market, for example: * Effective * Measurable * Accessible * Actionable * Profitable (foot note) Another method of evolution would be the SMART objectives method: * Specific * Measurable * Achievable * Realistic * Time scaled Either way, an organisation should evaluate their potential market before entering them. There have been cases where businesses have entered markets and failed, because they did not evaluate effectively. In 2003, Burger King introduced a new line of chicken sandwiches aimed at appealing to a more health conscious demographic (the BK Baguette Sandwiches). • 48. The Reign Of The Holy Roman Empire On Christmas day of 800 A.D., Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne the Holy Roman Emperor. This pivotal, but not necessarily wanted, moment in the history of the Catholic Church set up a precedent for very strong relations between the Holy Roman Emperor and the papacy. During the eleventh century, with the Holy Roman Emperor ruled by Henry IV, relations with the papacy came to a front over several disagreement between Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII. Their arguments mainly focused on the power that each institution should hold. Gregory felt that the papacy should play a larger political role in the western church and that lay investiture was against the will of God. Henry was conservative and did not want Rome intruding any more on his rule of the Holy Roman Emperor and accused Gregory of being a usurper and a fraud. In the midst of this argument, Gregory released various decrees, known as the Dictatus Papae, which greatly increased the power of the Papacy while reducing that of the Holy Roman Empire. The mere fact that Gregory felt the need to issue these decrees, in combination with the harsh reaction of Henry IV and the Bishops of Germany, prove that the papacy did not have effective authority over the Western church and institution. The imposition of the Gregorian reforms alone and the Pope s defense of them show how the papacy was not an institution of great authority in the Western church and lacked command among its constituents. The Gregorian reforms were not, as the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
