Hugh Owen Thomas was a Welsh orthopedic surgeon born in 1834 who is considered the father of orthopedic surgery in Britain. He trained in medicine in North Wales and London, and began his own practice in 1859 treating fractures and tuberculosis. Thomas advocated for rest in treatment and invented medical devices still used today like the Thomas splint for fracture immobilization. He died in 1891 in Liverpool having made significant contributions to the field of orthopedics.
