Andrew Syson - Enhancing the My Homepage to Display Forum Postings and More.MoodlemootAU2014
This document discusses enhancements to a university's Moodle homepage and course pages to improve the student experience and retention. It proposes displaying forum posts and course information on the homepage, upgrading from Moodle 1.x to 2.x, focusing courses onto single web pages with all relevant information, and adding features like self-enrollment between years and easy access to tutor contact details. Screenshots demonstrate examples of the current and proposed updated student and staff views.
The document discusses orientation efforts at University College Dublin (UCD) to welcome over 8,450 new students and postgraduates each year. It describes UCD's strategic goals around student engagement and the first year experience. The library aims to reach all new students through orientation to present itself as friendly, helpful, and integral to academic life. Activities include guides, tours, promotions, and collaborating with other university units. While the library works to effectively orient large student numbers each year with fewer staff, it questions whether orientation is worth the workload and how to measure its success in preparing students.
The document provides information about My College, including its mission to provide high-quality education matching diverse learners' needs, core values of promoting innovation and removing barriers, and the student charter setting standards for supportive services students can expect and responsibilities of students. It outlines teaching and learning students can anticipate, assessment processes, opportunities for feedback, and enrichment activities to enhance students' experience.
Created as part of a course on "How to use Open Educational Resources" from the SBCTC, this overview describes the benefits and challenges of using OER in the classroom.

Dale McCormick argues that open educational resources (OER) provide economic and engagement benefits for students and instructors. OER allows students to access course materials on the first day of class without worrying about costs, potentially improving retention. Instructors can easily edit and customize OER materials to best suit course outcomes. OER also offers opportunities to collaborate with other institutions and enhance professional development. However, McCormick notes that finding high-quality discipline-specific OER and gaining acceptance of OER may present challenges.

OOFHEC2017 How to build a MOOC on a budget and why.Brian Mulligan
MOOCs have been described as having the potential to make education much more accessible to many who previously could not afford it. However, the production costs that have been reported in the past have led many to suggest that they cannot be financially sustainable (Hollands and Devayani, 2014). If so, MOOCs will not emerge in topics with more narrow appeal such as in specialized topics or in minority languages (Woruba and Abedin, 2015). This presentation will give an overview of the Erasmus+ funded Locomotion Project which between 2015 and 2017 built and delivered the MOOCs4all MOOC; “Making MOOCs on a Budget”, to disseminate techniques on how to cheaply build an open course. It will also discuss the relatively modest uptake of the MOOC and barriers, other than cost, inhibiting the creation of MOOCs and invite contributions from the audience on how these can be overcome.

The University of Derby has transitioned from paper-based reading lists to using the online reading list system Aspire. This provides benefits to students, academics and library staff. The transition involved piloting with select areas, training staff, and gradually expanding Aspire's use across the university over several academic years. Usage has increased, with over 1000 lists now in Aspire and most linked to the university's course resources system. Feedback from students has been positive and national student survey scores have risen.

Open Educational Resources (OER): Benefits and ChallengesDavid Cummings
Open Educational Resources (OER) provide both benefits and challenges for educators and students. The main benefits are that OER saves students money by providing free educational materials, exposes students to a variety of resources, and allows for more customized course content. However, the primary challenges are the time costs for instructors to find, review, and curate high-quality OER materials to replace traditional textbooks. Instructors and students also need time to become familiar with using OER in place of standardized commercial textbooks.
Joint Presentation with Alan Bessette
The Second National Moodle Teachers and Developers Conference. Future University, Hakodate. 13-14 February 2010. Using Moodle for Program Administration.
This document discusses the pros and cons of open educational resources (OER) for students and instructors. Some benefits of OER include increasing access and equity for students by lowering costs, allowing continued access to materials, and enabling greater creativity and sharing for instructors. However, some drawbacks are that OER may not replicate the classroom experience, require technology skills and access, and developing high-quality OER takes significant time without compensation for instructors.

The school aims to make students more independent learners by providing quality online resources through Frog, which is used by 100% of teachers, 70% of support staff, and 96% of students. Frog allows staff to set up workspaces for classes, tutor groups, and clubs, and encourages setting homework assignments. It also enables students to set targets and parents to access homework, behavior reports, and attendance information to better engage parents. Support staff were also trained to use Frog by creating their own department websites.

Frog 15 - Flipping Out (Britannica Digital Learning)FrogEducation
Flipped learning is a teaching method where direct instruction moves from the group learning space to the individual learning space, commonly outside of the classroom, so that class time can be used for students to apply concepts, engage in problem-solving, and participate in collaborative activities. Surveys show that flipped learning improves standardized test scores and student attitudes, and case studies found failure rates dropped significantly when flipped learning was adopted. Flipped learning allows for easier differentiation of lessons, promotes group work, and provides more opportunities for formative assessment.

OER Benefits and Challenges - Caroline Evergreen.pptxCarolineEvergreen
This document outlines some of the key benefits and challenges of open educational resources (OER). The main benefits discussed are: increased opportunities for diversity, equity, and inclusion; cost savings for students through free or low-cost course materials; the ability for students to publish their work for others to build upon; expanded support networks for educators; and flexibility for instructors to adapt materials. The primary challenges covered are increased faculty workload; limited resources in some disciplines; ensuring materials remain up-to-date and sustainable long-term; information overload due to the large volume of options; and lack of institutional support at some schools.
Open educational resources (OER) can reduce the cost of student textbooks and make education more accessible globally. OER allow instructors to select relevant materials from different sources for their courses, and they encourage collaboration between educators. However, finding high-quality OER materials can be time-consuming for instructors, and OER content risks becoming outdated or unavailable if it is not regularly maintained.
