Early North American Culture Analysis
Based on the readings this semester, many things make interesting connections between today s
cultures and early North American cultures. Three authors illustrate these connections very well:
Olaudah Equiano, Roger Williams, and Anne Bradstreet. The authors give specific examples of what
people did on a normal basis as well as what their norms were; these examples were well enough
explained to be compared to today. Equiano s examples will hit home for most as he explains his
norms versus what today s people see as completely okay. Equiano gives example of cultural issues
that are currently very touchy subjects such as circumcision, Williams explains the way that the
population decided their own name and different things that they discovered such as constellations,
and Bradstreet shows different ways ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He talks about circumcision of a male infant, washing hands before eating, and women being around
men all the time. These are just a few of the examples he gives that relate to the culture today.
Circumcision is a hot topic; parents are starting to question whether it is as good for the child as it has
always said to be. In the early North American days it was said to be the best thing to do for a male
infant, now parents are thinking it through a little more and actually looking at the pros and cons to
circumcising their new baby. There are pros and cons to all things, but washing your hands is all pros.
Hand washing is something everyone struggles with, but is necessary to maintain good health. Hand
washing is the number one key to keeping infection and sickness down to a low percentage. Hand
washing is something that Equiano seen as a normal thing to do until he came to the new America;
people did not do such a thing here. Equiano was startled by this and questioned why this was not
done. Hand washing is still very important today and will continue to

Burials are one of the main sources of knowledge...
Burials are one of the main sources of knowledge concerning the Early Bronze Age. The most
common practice during this time was placing several generations of one family in the same cave or
tomb with a variety of offerings, such as pottery vessels, jewelry, and metal objects. In most cases,
skeletal remains were found disarticulated with the skulls separated from the bodies. For example, at
Tell Asawir bones were packed in pottery jars; at Azor there is some evidence of cremation; and at
Jericho the skulls were separated and arranged in rows (Mazar 1990). Shaft tombs were found at some
sites, such as the vast cemetery at Bab edhDhra , where the Early Bronze Age I phase includes several
thousand shaft tombs. As no settlement was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At other sites, such as Megiddo, the shafts are elaborate and square, and they lead into a cave with
several rectangular rooms (Mazar 1990). They generally contained one or more disarticulated
individuals. The grave goods usually included only some pottery vessels and sometimes a number of
copper weapons (e.g. a dagger and/or a spear); beads were found with female remains.
The use of caves for multiple burials became popular again in the Middle Bronze Age IIB C after a
long gap. This method suited an urban society in which families wished to bury their dead in the same
place over several generations. Dozens of rich burial caves from this period at Jericho are good
examples of the custom. The bodies were laid on a wooden bed in the center of the cave. A similar
practice from a possibly earlier date is evident at the cemetery of Baghuz near Mari (Mazar 1990). At
Jericho, older burials were pushed to the sides to allow room for the new ones on the bed or near it.
Dozens of individuals were found in the same cave, together with a rich collection of burial gifts,
including pottery vessels (some with food remains), wooden containers, weapons, tools, jewelry, and
seals. A particular feature of the Jericho tombs is the preservation of organic material, namely wooden
furniture (Mazar 1990). Variations between cemeteries in close proximity may indicate either a
chronological sequence or the possibility that related tribal

The Evil Side Of Good And Evil
The transformation also has a clear cut transcendental value, depending on moral grounds elevates it
on a higher, more spiritual and metaphorical level through its Manichean qualification and its religious
stakes with the comparison with the concept of conversion. Here is presented a Manichaean (from
Manichaeism) view of the world, Dr Jekyll and Hyde are here opposed on the spectrum of good and
evil. This is demonstrated by the abundance of the qualifier evil for Hyde: sold a slave to my original
evil , was pure evil , my evil or one was wholly evil . Although, the opposition is also made clear as it
is: The evil side of my nature (...) was less robust and less developed than the good which I had just
deposed . This, as I take it, was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This can be seen throughout the entire novella with the onomastic name of Hyde, as pointed out by
Utterson s pun, it can also mean hide . Evil was therefore hiding, lurking, within Dr Jekyll the entire
time but was emphasised by strict moral value and finally set free with Dr Jekyll transgressive
experiments. This transgression to the natural and universal orders seem to affect his surroundings, the
night is now accursed . The constellations looked down upon (him) , he defies God for he admits he
had defied his unsleeping vigilance . This extract describes how the transformation operates on
multiple level including the metaphorical, allegorical and religious one. But then, how does this
extract really treats of the question of duality?
This extract exploits this question on a literary level, through the literal dual personae of Jekyll and
Hyde with definite mental and physical differences but also through a characterisation of the Victorian
context. As soon as he drank the potion he felt physically different: I was suddenly aware that I had
lost in stature , whereas Dr Jekyll had often been described as an imposing man the stature (...) of
Henry Jekyll , Mr Hyde seems to have shrunk compared to Dr Jekyll. He is indeed

The Reasons Of The Chesapeake And New England Colonies
The Chesapeake and New England Colonies were originally settled in the early 1600 s. The
motivations behind these settlements led to their subsequent economies and societies which became
part of the foundation of these successful colonies. The Chesapeake Colonies needed cheap labor for
their tobacco plantations and the New England area sought freedom to practice religion without
restrictions from the English crown.
The Virginia Company initially colonized the Chesapeake area of Jamestown as a search for gold and
as an exploration of the area s natural resources. The company realized that for the colony to survive it
would have to forget their search for gold and instead find a profitable economy. Tobacco became
Virginia s substitute for gold. This new crop enriched a growing class of tobacco planters and many
members of colonial government. By 1624, more than 200,00 pounds of tobacco were grown and by
the 1680 s, crops totaled 30 million pounds. There was a get rich quick mind set and a frantic rush for
land and labor. Despite the severe conditions of the fields and a high death rate, the colony still
attracted immigrants. Of the 120,000 English immigrants, 3/4 came as servants. Jamestown became an
agrarian society with extensive farmlands along the region s rivers.
Because the plantations were widely dispersed, this new agrarian society had few town centers and
little social unity. The high demand for male labor in the fields meant that men outnumbered women

The Era Of The American Civil War
After the American Civil War, a laissez faire government allowed for a new class of businessmen to
rise to power: those who dominated an entire industry, sometimes several markets. They were the
hallmark of the so called Gilded Age, which lasted from the end of reconstruction until the early
1900s. These men, known as Robber Barons, shaped the American economy, necessitating new laws
to be signed to limit their power . Although there were only four main Barons (John D. Rockefeller,
Andrew Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and J.P. Morgan), they controlled much of the economy with
their four respective trades: Oil, steel, railroads, and banking . Although all four were important,
Rockefeller and Carnegie stand head and shoulders above the rest, becoming among the richest and
most successful people the world has ever seen with the exception of some royalty. During the Civil
War, both the Union and Confederacy converted to Total War economies. With all industries, from
manufacturing to agriculture to textiles, focused on the war effort, many relatively new industries
grew surpassingly large. Railroads in the North grew by around 16,000 miles, an increase of nearly
75%. However, relatively small companies controlled relatively small sections of track privately. This
set the stage for Vanderbilt to begin buying up companies until he controlled one of the largest railroad
networks ever seen. The latter parts of the Civil War and the early reconstruction saw the rise of a new

White Beauty Perceptions In The Bluest Eye By Toni Morrison
The Bluest Eye is a story written by Toni Morrison in 1970. The Bluest Eye gives readers a deep
descriptions of the ways white beauty standards deformed the lives of blacks girls and
women.provides an extended depiction of the ways in which internalized white beauty standards
deform the lives of black girls and women. Pecola let white beauty standards deform her life. People
believe that having the bluest eyes would change the way people viewed her and her view of others.
Whiteness being superior is shown throughout the entire text through implicit messages. The title of
the story explains the book basically. Pecola had a strong aspiration for blue eyes. She had a certain
insight on having blue eyes that wasn t necessarily correct. Pecola didn t believe she was up to the
beauty standards of the society. She honestly believed that the cruel things she is put through on the
daily is the effect of how she is seen by others. She has a honest feeling that if she obtains blue eyes
people will look at her and treat her differently because she feels like she ll be closer to the beauty
standards and being accepted. The thought process of Pecola was that if she had those pretty blue eyes
people would not want to do negative things to or in front of her. The accuracy of this insight is
confirmed by many of her daily experiences. There was a few times Pecola along with her family were
being mistreated because of the color of their skin, which is showing how whites were superior

Sir Francis Bacon And William Shakespeare
1 There are a variety of theories that suggest that Sir Francis Bacon was, in fact, William Shakespeare.
Supporters of these claims refer to Shakespeare s writing style, lack of education, and reportedly
hidden messages within his texts as some of the evidence that indicates that Bacon was the real author
of the many plays and poems attributed to Shakespeare. However, these assertions do not conclusively
substantiate the Bacon theory and only attempt to discredit the real William Shakespeare. Therefore,
Sir Francis Bacon did not write as William Shakespeare. The first theory of Sir Francis Bacon being
the true author of Shakespeare came from the author Delia Bacon no relation. Delia Bacon was a
failed novelist and school teacher. In the late 1850 s, she made the general public aware of the Bacon
theory through both an essay and book on the subject. Bacon claimed that a comparison of Sir Francis
Bacon s writings with those of Shakespeare proved that Bacon was the true author, as she contended
the writing styles were the same. As a result, she did start the Baconian movement, which many
people believe to be true. Her book, The Philosophy of the Plays of Shakspere Unfolded, was written
in 1857, and the preface of the book was written by Nathanial Hawthorne. Hawthorne s preface never
gives support or validation to Bacon s findings. He ends his preface with the following statement, It is
for the public to say whether my countrywoman has proved her theory. In

How Did Bartolome De Las Casas View The Natives
Bartolome de Las Casas was a Spanish colonist and a Dominican friar. His uncles and father were part
of Christopher Columbus second voyage to America. There were rumors of all the gold, spices and
other valuables going around Europe, so the Spanish built small colonies on the island of Hispaniola.
Las Casas in 1502 traveled to the New World to serve as an officer of the king. He was given a group
of Native Americans forced to serve and obey him. However he released his laborers and spent the
rest of his life protecting the Native Americans. Bartolome de Las Casas view of the Native Americans
was quite accurate. Although some of it seemed a bit bias he was mostly precise when describing
them. Las Casas describe the Indians as the most delicate people, weak and of feeble constitution, and
less than any other can they bear fatigue. They were poor and possessed little but that was the thing,
they didn t want to possess anything. They were neither proud, nor ... Show more content on

They believed the natives were nothing more than savages and were only good enough to be slaves.
Las Casas didn t like this. He said that the Spaniards, with their cruelty and execrable work, have
depopulated and made desolate the great continent. For forty years more than twelve million persons,
men and women and children, have perished unjustly and though tranny by the infernal deeds and
tyranny of the Christians. The only reason why the Spaniards killed and destroyed such infinite
numbers of souls is solely because they have made gold their ultimate aim, seeking to load themselves
with riches in the shortest time. They took everything away from the natives, enslaved them and killed
those who did not obey them. Everything he said about the Spaniards were completely true. They
were just money hungry bullies took advantage of the Indians because the Indians thought they came
from the heavens and refused to harm them. And that is just

A Doll s House Review Essay
A Doll s House Review A Doll s House was published in Norway in 1879 by Henrik Isben. He is
known as the father of Modern Theatre. He is also referred as the father of realism. The play is very
interesting because of the funny dialogue, the unique characters, and Ibsen s view of the place of
ladies in the public eye. The main characters of the play is Nora Helmer and her husband Torvald
Helmer. Imagine what it would be like to live in a doll s home? It s a house in which you are
controlled and have no energy to settle on any solid choice; It s a house in which you are a play thing
for another person s amusement. This sounds a ton like an awful marriage, so it s a house in which
your husband holds the satchel strings, in a manner of speaking, and abandons you with no influence
over your family s accounts. In fact, your husband keeps you on a tightrope. Such is the perceived life
of Nora Helmer. A Doll s House is an example of a literacy work with numeral possible themes. The
idea of the play is an expression of the need for women to escape from the confinement and restriction
that they faced in nineteenth century European society, it is supported by the condescending manner in
which Torvald treats Nora and by his frequent references to the respective value of men and women.
Another theme is in order for a marriage to be successful, the people involved should know and trust
each other, show view each other as

The Conflict Between Military Life And Civilian Life
For many decades now, many brave men and women have joined the military in order to serve the
country and protect the rights that are entitled to the American populace. However, when they return
back to the states, some soldiers are not able to the cope between the drastic differences between
military life and civilian life; as a result, they can be homeless veterans living on the streets. The
average citizens consider these veterans as just bums and consider them through the mindset of out of
sight, out of mind . Meanwhile, municipalities are acting no better as they enact rules that discriminate
against the homeless, including laws prohibiting public loitering, panhandling, and squatting. It
appears that the public and the government clearly do not do much in terms of helping those that may
need assistance, especially former soldiers that fought to protect them. While there are several factors
that can affect servicemen into becoming homeless, the knowledge of the factors can be utilized
appropriately by the citizens and officials to properly treat these heroes and return them to housed,
civilized lives instead of just shunning them. Back in 2007, the National Law Center on Homelessness
and Poverty reported that roughly 3.5 million people are likely to be homeless in a given year and the
National Coalition for the Homeless in 2009 states that between one fifth and one fourth of all
homeless people are veterans. Besides the numbers gathered by the above organizations,

Kim is based on the India that Kipling experiences during his five years of working there as a

his already intense admiration for the martial life (Matin 359). Events in the novel are manipulated to
formulate Kipling s dream of dominated India. Being a product of his time, Kipling believes that the
British empire has an obligation to bring enlightenment to inferior races and underdeveloped
countries. His idea of the best way to rule the native India is expressed by creating Kim who is born in
the country, resulting in Kim s appreciation and favor of the Indian culture. Kipling constructs the
native India consists of salvage people who are waiting to be civilized by British and limited by their
races no matter how much they contribute to the imperialist system. He has people positively speak on
empire s behalf and recognize the work of British men. Moreover, all the characters exist in the story
to help Kim going on the right track to become an imperialist boy and rise above everyone else. Kim s
ultimate choice of British empire s interest over his loved lama and his being blessed for doing so

Child Labor Reform Movement Essay
During the 1900s, America s children went to school and played. Children spent their summer in the
sun by doing outside activities like swimming as well as reading books and enjoying an ice cream
break. However, as recently as the early years of this century, there were many poor children that did
not live the same lifestyle. These children did not have time to play because they spent their days in
factories, coalmines, and in fields. Over two million children in America under the age of 16 had jobs
that consisted of twelve hours without stopping. Many children were forced to work because many
came from poor families who needed the extra help. The brutal conditions of working long hours and

Automated Customer Service Essay
Automated Customer Service: Advantages Outweigh Disadvantages
The marketplace in the world today is more competitive than ever before. Businesses are trying to
increase profits and lower operating costs. Stockholders are insisting that companies make money,
thus increasing their stock portfolios. Consumers are busier than at any point in the history of man.
They work longer hours and try to squeeze more extracurricular activities into their evenings. Into this
arena has come the automated customer service system.
Automated customer service has brought many advantages to today s businessmen and consumer
alike. It has decreased consumer waiting times, enabled businesses to lower operating costs, and
eliminated the middleman. While it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That s all gone away with the automated attendant. A few clicks of the button and the consumer has
accessed their account, completed their transaction, or received the information needed. For those
instances when a correction is needed or an error has been identified, most legitimate businesses have
included an option that allows the consumer to speak with an operator. This enables the consumer the
best of both worlds. Those who prefer to speak to a living breathing person have that ability, while
those who wish to have the capability of conducting their transaction without human interference have
their prayers answered.
In an increasingly fast paced world the automated customer servant can be a godsend. Yes, there are
problems with the system. There are bugs that through new technology and innovation will hopefully
be worked out. How many people thought the first automobile was nothing more than a confounded
contraption that was just as likely to blow up on you as get you where you wanted to go? I would
imagine there were thousands, even millions of people who felt this way. We live in an imperfect
world and in this imperfect world no new innovations are error free, and it is a given that most people
resist change. However, with most people looking for ways to save time so that they can squeeze in
that thirty minute workout or make it to their oldest sons baseball game, the automated attendant
innovation is one of the best options available. In

A majority of VaynerMedia s services are online social platforms and they have only recently reached

The Annual Women And Fair Trade Festival Essay
On a crisp morning this past fall, cooperatives from around the world set up shop in an Austin, Texas,
church for the annual Women and Fair Trade Festival. While most of the vendors were veterans of
collective organizing, one group of single immigrant mothers used the festival to debut their food
cooperative, Cooperativa Posada.
Three Mexican women Silvia, Elideth, and Erika and a Guatemalan woman named Hilda spent a near
sleepless night preparing dozens of their distinct regional varieties of tamales, some wrapped in corn
husks and others in moist banana leaves. Nebat, the lone Ethiopian member of the cooperative,
prepared some luscious, dark, traditional Ethiopian coffee by roasting the beans on a metal plate over
an open flame, then grinding them by hand.
The products of their labor were not only nourishment for the festival attendees (who lined up for a
taste), but also an attempt to raise the awareness and donations needed for their cooperative to
succeed. On a broader level, the tamales and coffee represented the mothers efforts to create an
opportunity for self sufficiency, to foster collective economic empowerment, and to forge a path
forward for themselves and their families.

The Rainbow Fish Marcus Pfister Analysis
The rainbow fish is the most beautiful fish in the ocean. Because of his beauty he is rude and cocky to
other fish. He was so focused on being the most beautiful he grows conceded. He is mean to fish. He
acts like he is better that everyone. In the Rainbow Fish, Marcus Pfister, shows personal growth using
the main character.
The rainbowfish is very conceded and selfish. He doesn t like to share. He thinks he is better that
everyone else. He said to the little fish who do you think you are! (paragraph 4)
When he asked for a scale. His tone was rude and showed that he did not care for the little fish s
feelings. He told the little fish to get away from him (paragraph 4). What he said showed the little fish

He has a terrible personality, but we all can change.
The rainbow fish is confused. He does not understand why nobody likes him. And he thinks the only
thing to life is beauty. When he said no to the little fish he told everyone and now they do not want to
be friends with a mean fish. The rainbow fish does not understand this. He doesn t think he can be
happy without his scales. He asked the starfish I m so beautiful. Why doesn t anybody like me?
(paragraph 6) . He did not understand why so he was asking the starfish why everyone disliked him.
Also after the wise octopus told him what to do the rainbowfish said quietly to himself Give away my
scales? My beautiful shining scales? Never.
How could I ever be happy without them? (paragraph 8). He is also confused here because he does not
think he can be happy without his beauty. The rainbow fish is weary of the octopus s instructions but
he wants to be happy.
The rainbowfish figures out that happiness is not about beauty. Its about being with people, or fish
who make your life great. The rainbow fish gave one of his scales to the little fish, he felt something
he hadn t felt before. The author told us that When the water around him

Food Taboos
Food Taboos Would You Eat Breast Milk Cheese? (Hamm, 2010). I have shown this headline to
multiple people and have received the same reaction from everyone. Most of these people I work with
at a daycare. We all handle and serve breast milk on a daily basis. Also we watch mothers nurse their
infants. Yet, the reaction did not surprise me, even with this comfort level with human breast milk.
This reaction falls along the line of disgust and shock. One person even reacted with a sharp reply of I
DID NOT NEED TO SEE THAT! There is something about the thought of consuming human breast
milk that makes people squirm.
Human Breast Milk is touted as the perfected food for infants. There is extreme pressure placed on

Two documentaries airing on the National Geographic Channel this week examine delicacies and
taboo foods around the globe, revealing that what s good or bad is all a matter of taste. (National
Geographic). This is only one of the channels that covers this topic on a regular occasion (I would use
the word basis); there are many more that cover every kind of taboo in the world.
Culture forms as sense of who we are in the larger community in which we exist among. This
connection shapes the rules we follow to exist to peacefully live with one another. The culture we
grow up in shapes our relationship with food. For better or worse, depending on if we accept and live
up to the cultural norms presented to us. For those who choose to not follow them will be faced with
consequences for rejecting theses norms. For me, the sub culture of my family in the United States has
had a major impact of what food taboos I hold. I was raised on a very limited palate of food diversity
and was rarely challenged to try new or unique food. This is only made worse by having Asperger s
Syndrome, which, causes sensory issues related to food. It can relate to any of the senses related to
eating or cooking. As a result, I do not enjoy eating as a general rule and do not derive pleasure from
it. The reason why this is true: is that I am very picky and eating is challenging for me.
This taboo can affect me socially. Our society in the United States, places

Richard The Lionheart
In the middle ages, knights were considered special to the society. Knights were also held higher than
other categories of fighters, such as archers and foot soldiers. Knights were generally richer because of
their service for the King. Being a knight was not easy work, and not many could actually do it. Each
knight was equipped with a suit of armor. The armor was very expensive because it was believed to
make them stronger than archers and foot soldiers. Knights performed very well in the medieval
feudalism economy. Because the knights defended the king, they could be granted a piece of land. The
knight could also then have peasants that worked on their land in exchange for protection from the
knights. The peasants would do all the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His life, though, was exaggerated by many myths and legends, such as the round table. There is no
actual evidence of the knights of the round table. There is also no evidence of the sword, that was
thought to be pulled out of a rock. Another well known king is Richard the Lionheart. Richard the
Lionheart succeeded his father Henry II as King of England in 1189. During the Third Crusade he
confirmed his reputation of a great leader. After returning to England, he was captured and handed
over to the Holy Roman Emperor. Richard was soon released after a ransom was paid. Richard the
Lionheart died in 1199 after he was hit by an arrow. Next, El Cid was a Castilian knight. His real
name was Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar. El was considered a Spanish national hero. El Cid s greatest
achievement was when he captured the kingdom city of Valencia in 1094. He was a less independent
ruler. He later died from natural causes. Alexander Nevsky, is the most celebrated medieval Russian
military leader. He got the name Nevsky after he defeated the Swedes on the Neva River in 1240.
Later, he also defeated the Livonian Brothers of the Sword and destroyed almost all of their forces in
the Battle of the Ice. Because of his outstanding political skills, he managed to gain considerable
concessions from the Mongols. He died in 1263, and then he became to be known as the national hero.
Last, Edward of Woodstock, Prince of Wales. Prince of Wales came to be called the Black Prince after
the Battle of Crecy. The Battle of Crecy was one of the most notable battles of the Hundred Years War.

The NEO PI R is available for purchase at the publisher s website, for individuals with a qualification
level of S or B. A level S qualification requires that buyers have a degree, certificate, or license to
practice in a health care profession, in addition to having the appropriate training and experience in
ethical administration, scoring, and interpretation of clinical behavioral assessment measures (NEO PI
R™, 2012). A level B qualification is very similar to the level S qualification in that it requires a
license or certification that required appropriate training and experience in the ethical and
knowledgeable use of psychological tests, or a degree in psychology, counseling, or a related field, in
addition to having completed coursework in test interpretation, psychometrics, measurement theory,
and educational statistics with a passing grade (NEO PI R™, 2012). This helps to ensure that the test
is only handled by individuals who have the necessary knowledge to interpret the test without
misinterpretation, which could have negative outcomes.
The NEO PI R is self administered, which means individuals who do not have formal training in
clinical psychology, personality or related fields can administer and score the instruments (Costa

not, review the administration and scoring procedures from the manual. On the other hand,

The Ethics Of Amateurism And College Athletes
Salaries, wages, and compensations have always been major and generally controversial topics in
democratic America. And, with the rising popularity of college athletics, particularly football,
compensation (or lack thereof) for college athletes has recently been a hot topic in American sports.
While some of the debate stems from the similarity between responsibilities college athletes have to
their programs and those of professionals, most of the issue involves the principles of amateurism.
Recent scandals involving college athletes such as Terrelle Pryor, Johnny Manziel, and Todd Gurley
have raised questions about the ethics of amateurism, particularly with regard to the NCAA
organization. The issue is found in a very gray area, where there is most likely no definitive one size
fits all solution, but the resolution of this issue is one that will change and shape the future of college
athletics across the national landscape. For as long as second level institutions have sponsored sports
teams to represent their universities, there have been regulations (both official and unofficial) on the
athletes, including their safety and benefits. This led to the formation of the NCAA in 1906. The
NCAA s formation in the beginning was to preserve the sport itself in a time when the sport was
perceived as too dangerous to be played. United States President Theodore Roosevelt actually
inadvertently set the NCAA in motion when he convened thirteen football representatives (Treadway,

The Roanoke Colony On Roanoke Island
The Roanoke Colony on Roanoke Island was an attempt by Queen Elizabeth I in the late 16th century
to make a permanent English settlement in the New World. In March 1584, Queen Elizabeth granted
Sir Walter Raleigh a charter for the colonization of the area of North America. This charter said that
Raleigh needed to create a colony in North America, or lose his right to colonization. In April 1584,
Raleigh dispatched an expedition led by Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to explore the Eastern
coast of North America. They arrived on Roanoke Island on July 4 and soon established relations with
the natives, the Secotans and Croatoans. Barlowe returned to England with two Croatans named

In 1587, Raleigh sent a new group of 115 colonists to establish a colony on Chesapeake Bay. John
White, a friend of Raleigh who had accompanied the previous expeditions to Roanoke, led them.
White was later elected Governor and Raleigh named 12 assistants to aid in Roanoke s settlement.
They were ordered to travel to Roanoke first to gather Grenville s men, but when they arrived in July
1587, they found nothing except a skeleton that may have been the remains of one of the English
garrison. They were counting on these men to help with the new colony, but when they could find no
one, they gave up hope of ever seeing Grenville s men alive. The fleet s commander, Simon
Fernandez, insisted that they establish the new colony on Roanoke. White re established relations with
the Croatans and tried to establish friendly relations with the tribes Ralph Lane had battled the
previous year. The hostile tribes refused to meet with him. Shortly thereafter, colonist George Howe
was killed by an Indian while searching alone for crabs in Albemarle Sound. Fearing for their lives,
the colonists persuaded Governor White to return to England to explain the colony s desperate

had made the Atlantic crossing plus White s newly born granddaughter Virginia Dare, the first English
child born in the Americas.

Carr s Writing Style
Technology evolves with time and changes the perspectives and culture of the society that it
permeates, the internet is no exception in its role as a digital information highway of the modern
world. Nicholas Carr uses data, examples, and repetition to structure his analysis of the above
phenomenon, in his article Is Google Making Us Stupid? . With a varied collection of data, Carr
illustrates the effects on reading styles due to the use of the internet. He sites qualitative data such as
the changes traditional media like newspapers have had to change to keep readership in the digital age.

In the beginning, he structures the opening paragraphs around his changing habits of reading and
research. He expresses concern at his mental expectation that he can take in information the way the
Net distributes it: in a swiftly moving stream of particles (Paragraph 4). He then widens out to the
consequences others experienced with the prevalence of technology. The differences between the
writing systems, ideograms employ and develop a mental circuitry for reading that is very different
from the circuitry found in those of us whose written language employs an alphabet. The variations
extend across many regions of the brain, including those that govern such essential cognitive functions
as memory and the interpretation of visual and auditory stimuli (paragraph 10). Through a consistent
repetition, he lays out key facts and provides the reader with the incentive to consider the changes that
they ve experienced. By the conclusion of his paper, a reader can realize that their view of what is
human and what makes a machine have blurred or even switched places. Carr s writing explains where
humans are through data, how the effects are taking place from the individual to the global world, and
finally the haunting illustration of where humanity is more cruel and unfeeling than the machines. In a
world with less and less deeper reading, the threat we pose to the future becomes more

she struck a well aimed kick to his wound, sending him down to the ground. Bending down to where

The Colonization Of Africa During The 19th Century
The Europeans became invested in Africa in the start of the 17th Century when the Dutch established
a port on the Cape of Good Hope on the southern tip of Africa to grant their ships extended range to
better access the rich Indies. Modern day South Africa, known at the time as Pretoria, was a hotly
contested place among the European powers. Initially there was not much to attract Europeans to the
area besides its great strategic location. Dutch settlers, also known as Boers, were apt to travel inland
and constantly established properties beyond the official borders of their colony. The migration of the
Boers often translated to skirmishes with native African tribes. The British also established a colony
on the Cape of Good Hope. The Brits sometimes brokered treaties and attempted to keep the Boers
and tribes from fighting amongst each other. In the middle of the 19th century Britain controlled the
colonies of the Cape and Natal. The British colonies extended from the Cape to the North and around
the eastern sea shore, nearly to Portuguese Mozambique. The Boers occupied two interior colonies:
The Orange Free State and the Transvaal. The African tribes were positioned in between all of the
colonies. The Zulu For centuries the Zulu tribe, also known as the Zulu Kingdom, had fought
neighboring tribes and became the strongest of them all. The Zulu were located across the Mzinyathi

The song s alliteration goes Heaven s horns and hunters. (167) this likely plays into an added depth to
the song to make it more pleasing to the ear. SPEAKER The Sword in the Stone is told from a 3rd
person omniscient perspective. Any other way of conveying the story would limit the grandeur and
growth of the story. If the story was told from a first person perspective Kay would seem even more of

Typewareness In Adrain Frutiger
Moreover, the drive to the core of unawareness is also evident in the realm of graphic design and type
design. In Adrain Frutiger, one of the most well known type artist s eyes, for a typeface to go
unnoticed is the greatest compliment for a type designer and a typographer can receive (Linotype,
2009). The purpose of a typeface is to communication. Only when a typeface becomes transparent or
invisible will it communicate contents or ideas efficiently without pushing itself forward (Haley,
2012). The whole point with typeface is for you not to be aware it is there Frutiger said and made an
impressive comparison: If you remember the shape of a spoon with which you just ate some soup,
then the spoon had a poor shape . Furthermore, in light of the current situation, technically speaking,
everything becomes possible, typefaces can be easily shaped into any forms enlarged, reduced,
condensed or expanded, slanted and deformed, all within seconds. It is a time for type design step out

Examples Of Real Courage In To Kill A Mockingbird
Is the courage you show real if not expressed in the pursuit of victory or to defend your pride? In the
eyes of Atticus Finch in Harper Lee s To Kill A Mockingbird, it is. For the lawyer, courage is more
than a fight on a battlefield for your country or performing a dangerous feat so that you can remain in
a position of power, continuing to live a life of prosperity and success. He and Lee see it as the
possession of the strength needed to maintain your morals even when they are challenged by
neighbours, friends, and your own family. Through Atticus s defence of Tom Robinson and his
assistance to the harsh and dying Mrs. Dubose, his actions illustrate real courage (149) as not the

deems Mr Robinson guilty, he feels that it is called for to attempt attacking the lawyer. As an act of
revenge, he resorts to cursing at and spitting on Atticus, further allowing the lawyer to show his
unorthodox style of courage. Atticus, aware that he could easily begin going after Mr. Ewell with his

the possible conflict, deems the situation a battle not worth fighting, moving on before any trouble is
started. Atticus believes that fighting Mr Ewell s opinions is not worth the effort or trouble, and
proceeds to act accordingly. Doing nothing but standing and waiting for his attacker to finish his rant,
Atticus determines that the abuse Mr Ewell brings upon him is not worth the effort of trying to stop,
and is much better brought upon him than upon the Ewell children at home. Foreseeing the
consequences of Mr Ewell s anger, Atticus feels that it is much more appropriate, though not right, for
the grown man to take his anger out on the person who caused him distress, as opposed to those who
never were guilty. The impartiality Atticus holds when talking with Mr Ewell highlights Lee s support
of courage being shown not through just offensive actions, but also through

This is a stark difference when compared to the presentation of women in another Harlem Renaissance
novel, Home to Harlem by Claude McKay. In McKay s novel, the plot mostly circulates around male
protagonist Jake, however the women characters still have a strong impact. Unlike Passing, the
women of Home to Harlem are part of a supporting cast of characters, and are of lower class standing.
Instead of attending tea parties and going window shopping, the women of Home to Harlem mostly
work at clubs and brothels to make a living. However, the women characters of Home to Harlem
actually have more power over some of the male characters. This is especially true when looking at
the relationship between Zeddy and Susy. In the chapter Zeddy s Rise And Fall , Zeddy gets kicked

going to Harlem clubs to see other women. The narrator states; The enjoyment of Harlem s low

TFSA Vs Rrsp Essay
A RRSP is a Registered Retirement Savings Plan that is an account set up to save for retirement
whereas a TFSA is a Tax Free Savings Account that is set up for any type of savings goal. They both
differ in their own ways however, both offer tax advantages to help one reach their savings goals.
First, in order to make contributions to a RRSP one needs earned income on the other hand for a TFSA
one does not. Also, another key difference between the two plans are that RRSP contributions are tax
deductible as you can deduct your contribution from the income you report on the tax return. A TFSA
is the exact inverse, as you cannot deduct your contribution on your tax return. Furthermore, when it
comes to withdrawals, both of the plans are opposite once again as TFSA withdrawals are tax free and
RRSP withdrawals aren t tax free. Also another difference would be the age limit for making
contributions, with a RRSP one has to stop making contributions at the age of 71, whereas in a TFSA
there is no age restriction, one could make contributions for how ever long they want. ... Show more

Now when it comes to choosing one plan and making the most from it, it depends on a few key factors
including tax situations, when your planning on taking out the money, and individual circumstances.
The best path would be to contribute to both, but most citizens can t afford that. The way I look at it,
RRSP is more long term (10 years or more), and TFSA is more short term (1 10 years). If the client is
a young adult and is saving for an investment within the next 10 years, the client should invest in a
TFSA. If the client however is older, someone who maybe is a full adult, perhaps over the age of 28
should look to invest in a RRSP, as that person will need money once he or she has retired. Plus, if the

  • 2. Early North American Culture Analysis Based on the readings this semester, many things make interesting connections between today s cultures and early North American cultures. Three authors illustrate these connections very well: Olaudah Equiano, Roger Williams, and Anne Bradstreet. The authors give specific examples of what people did on a normal basis as well as what their norms were; these examples were well enough explained to be compared to today. Equiano s examples will hit home for most as he explains his norms versus what today s people see as completely okay. Equiano gives example of cultural issues that are currently very touchy subjects such as circumcision, Williams explains the way that the population decided their own name and different things that they discovered such as constellations, and Bradstreet shows different ways ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He talks about circumcision of a male infant, washing hands before eating, and women being around men all the time. These are just a few of the examples he gives that relate to the culture today. Circumcision is a hot topic; parents are starting to question whether it is as good for the child as it has always said to be. In the early North American days it was said to be the best thing to do for a male infant, now parents are thinking it through a little more and actually looking at the pros and cons to circumcising their new baby. There are pros and cons to all things, but washing your hands is all pros. Hand washing is something everyone struggles with, but is necessary to maintain good health. Hand washing is the number one key to keeping infection and sickness down to a low percentage. Hand washing is something that Equiano seen as a normal thing to do until he came to the new America; people did not do such a thing here. Equiano was startled by this and questioned why this was not done. Hand washing is still very important today and will continue to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Burials are one of the main sources of knowledge... Burials are one of the main sources of knowledge concerning the Early Bronze Age. The most common practice during this time was placing several generations of one family in the same cave or tomb with a variety of offerings, such as pottery vessels, jewelry, and metal objects. In most cases, skeletal remains were found disarticulated with the skulls separated from the bodies. For example, at Tell Asawir bones were packed in pottery jars; at Azor there is some evidence of cremation; and at Jericho the skulls were separated and arranged in rows (Mazar 1990). Shaft tombs were found at some sites, such as the vast cemetery at Bab edhDhra , where the Early Bronze Age I phase includes several thousand shaft tombs. As no settlement was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At other sites, such as Megiddo, the shafts are elaborate and square, and they lead into a cave with several rectangular rooms (Mazar 1990). They generally contained one or more disarticulated individuals. The grave goods usually included only some pottery vessels and sometimes a number of copper weapons (e.g. a dagger and/or a spear); beads were found with female remains. The use of caves for multiple burials became popular again in the Middle Bronze Age IIB C after a long gap. This method suited an urban society in which families wished to bury their dead in the same place over several generations. Dozens of rich burial caves from this period at Jericho are good examples of the custom. The bodies were laid on a wooden bed in the center of the cave. A similar practice from a possibly earlier date is evident at the cemetery of Baghuz near Mari (Mazar 1990). At Jericho, older burials were pushed to the sides to allow room for the new ones on the bed or near it. Dozens of individuals were found in the same cave, together with a rich collection of burial gifts, including pottery vessels (some with food remains), wooden containers, weapons, tools, jewelry, and seals. A particular feature of the Jericho tombs is the preservation of organic material, namely wooden furniture (Mazar 1990). Variations between cemeteries in close proximity may indicate either a chronological sequence or the possibility that related tribal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Evil Side Of Good And Evil The transformation also has a clear cut transcendental value, depending on moral grounds elevates it on a higher, more spiritual and metaphorical level through its Manichean qualification and its religious stakes with the comparison with the concept of conversion. Here is presented a Manichaean (from Manichaeism) view of the world, Dr Jekyll and Hyde are here opposed on the spectrum of good and evil. This is demonstrated by the abundance of the qualifier evil for Hyde: sold a slave to my original evil , was pure evil , my evil or one was wholly evil . Although, the opposition is also made clear as it is: The evil side of my nature (...) was less robust and less developed than the good which I had just deposed . This, as I take it, was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This can be seen throughout the entire novella with the onomastic name of Hyde, as pointed out by Utterson s pun, it can also mean hide . Evil was therefore hiding, lurking, within Dr Jekyll the entire time but was emphasised by strict moral value and finally set free with Dr Jekyll transgressive experiments. This transgression to the natural and universal orders seem to affect his surroundings, the night is now accursed . The constellations looked down upon (him) , he defies God for he admits he had defied his unsleeping vigilance . This extract describes how the transformation operates on multiple level including the metaphorical, allegorical and religious one. But then, how does this extract really treats of the question of duality? This extract exploits this question on a literary level, through the literal dual personae of Jekyll and Hyde with definite mental and physical differences but also through a characterisation of the Victorian context. As soon as he drank the potion he felt physically different: I was suddenly aware that I had lost in stature , whereas Dr Jekyll had often been described as an imposing man the stature (...) of Henry Jekyll , Mr Hyde seems to have shrunk compared to Dr Jekyll. • 5. The Reasons Of The Chesapeake And New England Colonies The Chesapeake and New England Colonies were originally settled in the early 1600 s. The motivations behind these settlements led to their subsequent economies and societies which became part of the foundation of these successful colonies. The Chesapeake Colonies needed cheap labor for their tobacco plantations and the New England area sought freedom to practice religion without restrictions from the English crown. The Virginia Company initially colonized the Chesapeake area of Jamestown as a search for gold and as an exploration of the area s natural resources. The company realized that for the colony to survive it would have to forget their search for gold and instead find a profitable economy. Tobacco became Virginia s substitute for gold. This new crop enriched a growing class of tobacco planters and many members of colonial government. By 1624, more than 200,00 pounds of tobacco were grown and by the 1680 s, crops totaled 30 million pounds. There was a get rich quick mind set and a frantic rush for land and labor. Despite the severe conditions of the fields and a high death rate, the colony still attracted immigrants. Of the 120,000 English immigrants, 3/4 came as servants. Jamestown became an agrarian society with extensive farmlands along the region s rivers. Because the plantations were widely dispersed, this new agrarian society had few town centers and little social unity. The high demand for male labor in the fields meant that men outnumbered women four or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Era Of The American Civil War After the American Civil War, a laissez faire government allowed for a new class of businessmen to rise to power: those who dominated an entire industry, sometimes several markets. They were the hallmark of the so called Gilded Age, which lasted from the end of reconstruction until the early 1900s. These men, known as Robber Barons, shaped the American economy, necessitating new laws to be signed to limit their power . Although there were only four main Barons (John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and J.P. Morgan), they controlled much of the economy with their four respective trades: Oil, steel, railroads, and banking . Although all four were important, Rockefeller and Carnegie stand head and shoulders above the rest, becoming among the richest and most successful people the world has ever seen with the exception of some royalty. During the Civil War, both the Union and Confederacy converted to Total War economies. With all industries, from manufacturing to agriculture to textiles, focused on the war effort, many relatively new industries grew surpassingly large. Railroads in the North grew by around 16,000 miles, an increase of nearly 75%. However, relatively small companies controlled relatively small sections of track privately. This set the stage for Vanderbilt to begin buying up companies until he controlled one of the largest railroad networks ever seen. She had a certain insight on having blue eyes that wasn t necessarily correct. Pecola didn t believe she was up to the beauty standards of the society. She honestly believed that the cruel things she is put through on the daily is the effect of how she is seen by others. She has a honest feeling that if she obtains blue eyes people will look at her and treat her differently because she feels like she ll be closer to the beauty standards and being accepted. The thought process of Pecola was that if she had those pretty blue eyes people would not want to do negative things to or in front of her. The accuracy of this insight is confirmed by many of her daily experiences. There was a few times Pecola along with her family were being mistreated because of the color of their skin, which is showing how whites were superior ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Sir Francis Bacon And William Shakespeare 1 There are a variety of theories that suggest that Sir Francis Bacon was, in fact, William Shakespeare. Supporters of these claims refer to Shakespeare s writing style, lack of education, and reportedly hidden messages within his texts as some of the evidence that indicates that Bacon was the real author of the many plays and poems attributed to Shakespeare. However, these assertions do not conclusively substantiate the Bacon theory and only attempt to discredit the real William Shakespeare. Therefore, Sir Francis Bacon did not write as William Shakespeare. The first theory of Sir Francis Bacon being the true author of Shakespeare came from the author Delia Bacon no relation. Delia Bacon was a failed novelist and school teacher. In the late 1850 s, she made the general public aware of the Bacon theory through both an essay and book on the subject. Bacon claimed that a comparison of Sir Francis Bacon s writings with those of Shakespeare proved that Bacon was the true author, as she contended the writing styles were the same. As a result, she did start the Baconian movement, which many people believe to be true. Her book, The Philosophy of the Plays of Shakspere Unfolded, was written in 1857, and the preface of the book was written by Nathanial Hawthorne. Hawthorne s preface never gives support or validation to Bacon s findings. He ends his preface with the following statement, It is for the public to say whether my countrywoman has proved her theory. • 9. How Did Bartolome De Las Casas View The Natives Bartolome de Las Casas was a Spanish colonist and a Dominican friar. His uncles and father were part of Christopher Columbus second voyage to America. There were rumors of all the gold, spices and other valuables going around Europe, so the Spanish built small colonies on the island of Hispaniola. Las Casas in 1502 traveled to the New World to serve as an officer of the king. He was given a group of Native Americans forced to serve and obey him. However he released his laborers and spent the rest of his life protecting the Native Americans. Bartolome de Las Casas view of the Native Americans was quite accurate. Although some of it seemed a bit bias he was mostly precise when describing them. • 10. A Doll s House Review Essay A Doll s House Review A Doll s House was published in Norway in 1879 by Henrik Isben. He is known as the father of Modern Theatre. He is also referred as the father of realism. The play is very interesting because of the funny dialogue, the unique characters, and Ibsen s view of the place of ladies in the public eye. The main characters of the play is Nora Helmer and her husband Torvald Helmer. Imagine what it would be like to live in a doll s home? It s a house in which you are controlled and have no energy to settle on any solid choice; It s a house in which you are a play thing for another person s amusement. This sounds a ton like an awful marriage, so it s a house in which your husband holds the satchel strings, in a manner of speaking, and abandons you with no influence over your family s accounts. In fact, your husband keeps you on a tightrope. Such is the perceived life of Nora Helmer. A Doll s House is an example of a literacy work with numeral possible themes. The idea of the play is an expression of the need for women to escape from the confinement and restriction that they faced in nineteenth century European society, it is supported by the condescending manner in which Torvald treats Nora and by his frequent references to the respective value of men and women. Another theme is in order for a marriage to be successful, the people involved should know and trust each other, show view each other as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Conflict Between Military Life And Civilian Life For many decades now, many brave men and women have joined the military in order to serve the country and protect the rights that are entitled to the American populace. However, when they return back to the states, some soldiers are not able to the cope between the drastic differences between military life and civilian life; as a result, they can be homeless veterans living on the streets. The average citizens consider these veterans as just bums and consider them through the mindset of out of sight, out of mind . Meanwhile, municipalities are acting no better as they enact rules that discriminate against the homeless, including laws prohibiting public loitering, panhandling, and squatting. It appears that the public and the government clearly do not do much in terms of helping those that may need assistance, especially former soldiers that fought to protect them. While there are several factors that can affect servicemen into becoming homeless, the knowledge of the factors can be utilized appropriately by the citizens and officials to properly treat these heroes and return them to housed, civilized lives instead of just shunning them. Back in 2007, the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty reported that roughly 3.5 million people are likely to be homeless in a given year and the National Coalition for the Homeless in 2009 states that between one fifth and one fourth of all homeless people are veterans. The Annual Women And Fair Trade Festival Essay On a crisp morning this past fall, cooperatives from around the world set up shop in an Austin, Texas, church for the annual Women and Fair Trade Festival. While most of the vendors were veterans of collective organizing, one group of single immigrant mothers used the festival to debut their food cooperative, Cooperativa Posada. Three Mexican women Silvia, Elideth, and Erika and a Guatemalan woman named Hilda spent a near sleepless night preparing dozens of their distinct regional varieties of tamales, some wrapped in corn husks and others in moist banana leaves. Nebat, the lone Ethiopian member of the cooperative, prepared some luscious, dark, traditional Ethiopian coffee by roasting the beans on a metal plate over an open flame, then grinding them by hand. The products of their labor were not only nourishment for the festival attendees (who lined up for a taste), but also an attempt to raise the awareness and donations needed for their cooperative to succeed. On a broader level, the tamales and coffee represented the mothers efforts to create an opportunity for self sufficiency, to foster collective economic empowerment, and to forge a path forward for themselves and their families. The issue is found in a very gray area, where there is most likely no definitive one size fits all solution, but the resolution of this issue is one that will change and shape the future of college athletics across the national landscape. For as long as second level institutions have sponsored sports teams to represent their universities, there have been regulations (both official and unofficial) on the athletes, including their safety and benefits. This led to the formation of the NCAA in 1906. The NCAA s formation in the beginning was to preserve the sport itself in a time when the sport was perceived as too dangerous to be played. United States President Theodore Roosevelt actually inadvertently set the NCAA in motion when he convened thirteen football representatives (Treadway, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 28. The Roanoke Colony On Roanoke Island The Roanoke Colony on Roanoke Island was an attempt by Queen Elizabeth I in the late 16th century to make a permanent English settlement in the New World. In March 1584, Queen Elizabeth granted Sir Walter Raleigh a charter for the colonization of the area of North America. This charter said that Raleigh needed to create a colony in North America, or lose his right to colonization. In April 1584, Raleigh dispatched an expedition led by Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to explore the Eastern coast of North America. They arrived on Roanoke Island on July 4 and soon established relations with the natives, the Secotans and Croatoans. In 1587, Raleigh sent a new group of 115 colonists to establish a colony on Chesapeake Bay. John White, a friend of Raleigh who had accompanied the previous expeditions to Roanoke, led them. White was later elected Governor and Raleigh named 12 assistants to aid in Roanoke s settlement. They were ordered to travel to Roanoke first to gather Grenville s men, but when they arrived in July 1587, they found nothing except a skeleton that may have been the remains of one of the English garrison. They were counting on these men to help with the new colony, but when they could find no one, they gave up hope of ever seeing Grenville s men alive. The fleet s commander, Simon Fernandez, insisted that they establish the new colony on Roanoke. White re established relations with the Croatans and tried to establish friendly relations with the tribes Ralph Lane had battled the previous year. The hostile tribes refused to meet with him. Shortly thereafter, colonist George Howe was killed by an Indian while searching alone for crabs in Albemarle Sound. Fearing for their lives, the colonists persuaded Governor White to return to England to explain the colony s desperate situation and ask for help. Left behind were about 115 colonists the remaining men and women who had made the Atlantic crossing plus White s newly born granddaughter Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the Americas. Nicholas Carr uses data, examples, and repetition to structure his analysis of the above phenomenon, in his article Is Google Making Us Stupid? . With a varied collection of data, Carr illustrates the effects on reading styles due to the use of the internet. The differences between the writing systems, ideograms employ and develop a mental circuitry for reading that is very different from the circuitry found in those of us whose written language employs an alphabet. The variations extend across many regions of the brain, including those that govern such essential cognitive functions as memory and the interpretation of visual and auditory stimuli (paragraph 10). Through a consistent repetition, he lays out key facts and provides the reader with the incentive to consider the changes that they ve experienced. By the conclusion of his paper, a reader can realize that their view of what is human and what makes a machine have blurred or even switched places. Carr s writing explains where humans are through data, how the effects are taking place from the individual to the global world, and finally the haunting illustration of where humanity is more cruel and unfeeling than the machines. Though he hadn t been able to cry out, the man s collision with Millie still made quite a commotion, so the other goons heads jerked towards the source of the noise. They saw the blood leaking from his head, and raised their guns at his killer. About to squeeze the triggers, the men suddenly froze, speechless. The darkly clad culprit, who was yanking their knife out of their colleague s head, was... and old lady? When the gunman s firearm clicked empty, Millie drove her sword (and man shield) into his chest, now holding a double goon shishkabob. With a grunt of effort, she poullled her needle out of the men, leaving their bloody bodies on the ground. Suddenly, Millie instinctively jumped straight up into the air, just as a line of bullets rushed in from behind, barely missing her. In mid air, she twisted to face her aggressor, and threw her sword at him like a metal javelin. It caught him in the neck and embedded itself in the ground behind him. He stood slouched backwards, and slowly slid down the blade by his neck until he rested on the ground, blood pooling around him and soaking into his hair. One left. As he ran, Millie noticed he had a strange gait, limping because of a severe gash on his right leg, possibly from one of the stray bullets previously flying around the room. Dodging his punch, she struck a well aimed kick to his wound, sending him down to the ground. Bending down to where the man lay gasping on the ground, Millie hissed in his ear, Why is he here?! ... • 31. The Colonization Of Africa During The 19th Century The Europeans became invested in Africa in the start of the 17th Century when the Dutch established a port on the Cape of Good Hope on the southern tip of Africa to grant their ships extended range to better access the rich Indies. Modern day South Africa, known at the time as Pretoria, was a hotly contested place among the European powers. Initially there was not much to attract Europeans to the area besides its great strategic location. Dutch settlers, also known as Boers, were apt to travel inland and constantly established properties beyond the official borders of their colony. The migration of the Boers often translated to skirmishes with native African tribes. The British also established a colony on the Cape of Good Hope. The Brits sometimes brokered treaties and attempted to keep the Boers and tribes from fighting amongst each other. In the middle of the 19th century Britain controlled the colonies of the Cape and Natal. The British colonies extended from the Cape to the North and around the eastern sea shore, nearly to Portuguese Mozambique. The Boers occupied two interior colonies: The Orange Free State and the Transvaal. The African tribes were positioned in between all of the colonies. • 33. Typewareness In Adrain Frutiger Moreover, the drive to the core of unawareness is also evident in the realm of graphic design and type design. In Adrain Frutiger, one of the most well known type artist s eyes, for a typeface to go unnoticed is the greatest compliment for a type designer and a typographer can receive (Linotype, 2009). The purpose of a typeface is to communication. Only when a typeface becomes transparent or invisible will it communicate contents or ideas efficiently without pushing itself forward (Haley, 2012). The whole point with typeface is for you not to be aware it is there Frutiger said and made an impressive comparison: If you remember the shape of a spoon with which you just ate some soup, then the spoon had a poor shape . Furthermore, in light of the current situation, technically speaking, everything becomes possible, typefaces can be easily shaped into any forms enlarged, reduced, condensed or expanded, slanted and deformed, all within seconds. In the eyes of Atticus Finch in Harper Lee s To Kill A Mockingbird, it is. For the lawyer, courage is more than a fight on a battlefield for your country or performing a dangerous feat so that you can remain in a position of power, continuing to live a life of prosperity and success. He and Lee see it as the possession of the strength needed to maintain your morals even when they are challenged by neighbours, friends, and your own family. Instead of Mr Ewell treating Atticus with respect after the jury deems Mr Robinson guilty, he feels that it is called for to attempt attacking the lawyer. As an act of revenge, he resorts to cursing at and spitting on Atticus, further allowing the lawyer to show his unorthodox style of courage. Atticus, aware that he could easily begin going after Mr. Ewell with his fists and anger, remains stone faced and silently takes every word Mr. Ewell throws at him. He avoids the possible conflict, deems the situation a battle not worth fighting, moving on before any trouble is started. Atticus believes that fighting Mr Ewell s opinions is not worth the effort or trouble, and proceeds to act accordingly. Doing nothing but standing and waiting for his attacker to finish his rant, Atticus determines that the abuse Mr Ewell brings upon him is not worth the effort of trying to stop, and is much better brought upon him than upon the Ewell children at home. Foreseeing the consequences of Mr Ewell s anger, Atticus feels that it is much more appropriate, though not right, for the grown man to take his anger out on the person who caused him distress, as opposed to those who never were guilty. The impartiality Atticus holds when talking with Mr Ewell highlights Lee s support of courage being shown not through just offensive actions, but also through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Passing In Home To Harlem Women of the Harlem Renaissance Novels: The Stark Differences Between The Women of Passing and Home to Harlem In the novels Home to Harlem and Passing, the representation of women characters is very different. In terms of personality, social class, and relationships with other characters, the women characters in both novels are distinctive from each other in many ways. The middle class women of Passing provides insight to the drama of passing as white, while the women of Home to Harlem provides more sexual politics and dynamics between them and the male characters. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a stark difference when compared to the presentation of women in another Harlem Renaissance novel, Home to Harlem by Claude McKay. In McKay s novel, the plot mostly circulates around male protagonist Jake, however the women characters still have a strong impact. Unlike Passing, the women of Home to Harlem are part of a supporting cast of characters, and are of lower class standing. Instead of attending tea parties and going window shopping, the women of Home to Harlem mostly work at clubs and brothels to make a living. However, the women characters of Home to Harlem actually have more power over some of the male characters. This is especially true when looking at the relationship between Zeddy and Susy. In the chapter Zeddy s Rise And Fall , Zeddy gets kicked out by Susy due to him seeing other women in Harlem. Susy had previously warned Zeddy about going to Harlem clubs to see other women. The narrator states; The enjoyment of Harlem s low nightlife was prohibited to Zeddy. Susy was jealous of him in the proprietary sense. • 36. TFSA Vs Rrsp Essay A RRSP is a Registered Retirement Savings Plan that is an account set up to save for retirement whereas a TFSA is a Tax Free Savings Account that is set up for any type of savings goal. They both differ in their own ways however, both offer tax advantages to help one reach their savings goals. First, in order to make contributions to a RRSP one needs earned income on the other hand for a TFSA one does not. Also, another key difference between the two plans are that RRSP contributions are tax deductible as you can deduct your contribution from the income you report on the tax return. A TFSA is the exact inverse, as you cannot deduct your contribution on your tax return. Furthermore, when it comes to withdrawals, both of the plans are opposite once again as TFSA withdrawals are tax free and RRSP withdrawals aren t tax free. Also another difference would be the age limit for making contributions, with a RRSP one has to stop making contributions at the age of 71, whereas in a TFSA there is no age restriction, one could make contributions for how ever long they want. ... If the client is a young adult and is saving for an investment within the next 10 years, the client should invest in a TFSA. If the client however is older, someone who maybe is a full adult, perhaps over the age of 28 should look to invest in a RRSP, as that person will need money once he or she has retired.
