Imagine what you would all be like if, despite adversity and poverty, you still had a positive outlook
on life? What would happen if you lived every day to the fullest? You would probably look back on
life fondly despite all your hardships that you may have faced. Gwendolyn Brooks addressed the
issues of poverty and living to the fullest in The Bean Eaters and Sadie and Maud. Both these poems
have similar themes and some differences as well. This paper is about the contrasts between the two
poems.
Gwendolyn Brooks wrote both poems. Brooks often wrote about the plights of minorities and those in
poverty. She lived in an apartment in Chicago and would write poems about those around her. I wrote
about what I saw and heard in the street, Ms. Brooks once said. I lived in a small second floor
apartment at the corner, and I could look first on one side and then the other. There was my material
(M. Watkins, 2000). She drew her material from watching those around her. You can clearly
understand how her observations helped her write these two poems because of how both the poems
were about the plights of those in poverty.
In both poems, their characters were living in some sort of poverty. Even though they were in poverty,
they were without want. The characters in the poems still manage to have meaningful lives despite the
poverty and adversity that is against them. In Sadie and Maud , it is assumed that Sadie did not earn as
much money because it says Maud went to college/Sadie stayed at home (G. Brooks, 1963). The
reason one can assume that Sadie probably did not earn as much money as her sister is that you
usually earn more money if you have a degree. Also since it says Sadie stayed at home it does not
explain what she was doing during that time. In another part of the poem, it states, When Sadie said
her last so long/Her girls struck out from home. / (Sadie had left as a heritage/Her fine tooth comb) (G.
Brooks, 1963). Again, it is apparent that she did not have much at all. All Sadie had to give was her
fine tooth comb. The Bean Eaters also do not have much to their name. it says They eat beans mostly,
this old yellow pair. / Dinner is a casual affair. /Plain chipware on a plain and creaking wood,

How Did Alfred Hitchcock Build Suspense
The first half of this course focused on Alfred Hitchcock and how his techniques are now recognized
as iconic. From class discussions and film screenings, it is clear that Hitchcock pays every attention to
detail when he crafts a scene. Many Hitchcock films we have seen this semester highlight how he
builds suspense through cinematic elements such as shadow, dialogue, and composition. While many

Throughout the conversation between John and Francie, the shadows cover the characters in different
ways. For the majority of this scene, Francie has minimal shadows on her. It is as if the moonlight is
shining on her. The only instance where part of her body is covered in shadow is when she steps back
into the dark, saying, the thrill is right there in front of you, but you can t quite get it. Her face
disappears, but the necklace remains visible and sparkling for the audience and John to see. On the
other hand, John has half of his face covered in shadow several times while they are watching the
fireworks. While Francie is tempting John as well as getting him to admit his true identity, John
disregards Francie s scenarios and states that he would not take part in such acts. The fact that we can
see one side of his face could mean that John is trying to conceal his identity as the former cat burglar.
Hitchcock could have manipulated the shadows to highlight John s dual identity. The only reason I can
think of for why Francie s shots are not covered in as many shadows is that Hitchcock wanted to
emphasize her beauty to the audience and to John. As Francie continues to tempt John, the romantic
suspense builds as the firework display continues. The scene starts with John and Francie facing each
other as the fireworks display is occurring between them. The fireworks serve as a symbol of the
relationship between John and Francie. As the scene progresses, the fireworks displays goes from
simple to out of control. Once John and Francie move to the couch, the camera switches views from
the characters to the fireworks to display how both events are similar to one

Black History Museum Essay
In celebration of Black History Month, Prairie View A M University has sponsored an art exhibit
featuring artwork by Ronney Stevens and Ted Ellis. The art exhibit s theme is centered around
Hallowed Grounds: Sites of African American Memory to display historical figures and events in a
different light. The exhibit will remain open until March 11, and visitors can view the exhibit between
10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on the fourth floor of the John B. Coleman Library.
Art pieces seen in the fourth floor library art exhibit include an abstract painting of President Barack
Obama that can be seen upon entering. In addition, visitors can view pieces of iconic figures, such as
Tupac, Michael Jackson, and Martin Luther King Jr. Not only can guests observe works of figures, but
powerful events and symbols, such as a piece that depicts gangs, Crips and Bloods, with their
respectable bandanas tied together to symbolize their unity in the presence of extreme law
enforcement violence on black youth.

to take the law into his own hands and the loss of his family is his driving force that makes him

I don t believe that women should have the option of artificial fertilization because the
women can have emotionally harmful side effects. According to a study released by the Baird
commission in April about 2,900 women were enrolled in IVF programs n Canada in 1991
resulting in 189 births, while 3,400 used artificial insemination in fertility clinics, leading to 360
births. (Nichols 2) The fact that the success rate is that low is sad a woman could try and try to
get pregnant and go through so many treatments hoping at the same time that eventually they
could have a child but fail most of the time.
