Philosophy of Behaviorism
Philosophy of Behaviorism
Tammie Williams
Columbia College
Abstract
For hundreds of years there has been a fascination on how humans behave and how humans learn.
This has been observed and studied by psychologists, educators, and scientists by means of humans
and animals and how they perform in different environments. This fascination is known as
behaviorism. This aspect of behaviorism deals with how a humans or animals respond to a certain
stimuli and how a new behavior is then developed. This paper will address the philosophy of
behaviorism, the great contributors to behaviorism and their aspects of behavioral learning such as
classical conditioning and operant conditioning.

Psychoanalysis is a school of thought that was founded by Sigmund Freud. This theory focuses on that
behavior is influenced by the unconscious mind. Freud felt that the human mind was made up of three
elements which include the id, the ego, and the superego. Eric Erikson, Carl Jung, and Anna Freud
were also psychoanalysis thinkers. Humanistic psychology was developed as a response to
behaviorism and psychoanalysis. Individual free will, self actualization and personal growth were
focused on by humanistic psychology. Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow were amongst the major
humanistic psychology thinkers. Gestalt psychology is based upon that people experience things as
unified wholes. This approach started in the late 19th century in Austria and Germany. This approach
was a response to molecular approach of structuralism (Cherry, 2005). Gestalt psychologists felt
things must be looked at as a whole rather than breaking the thought down. They believed that a whole
is more than just the sum of its parts. Cognitive psychology is a school of thought which studies the
mental process including how we remember, think, perceive, and learn. Philosophy, neuroscience, and
linguistics are disciplines that are related to this branch of psychology. The stages of cognitive
development theory by Jean Piaget were amongst the most influential theories from cognitive
psychology.

Too Much Punch For Judy Play Analysis
The play that we read for this unit is Too Much Punch For Judy, by Mark Wheeller. It is a form of
Verbatim Theatre, which means the play is based on the spoken words of real people. This play is
about the story of a young woman who kills her sister in an alcohol related accident. When I first read
the play I couldn t empathize with the story as I have never encountered such a shocking event in my
life. In this essay I will describe, analyse and evaluate both my work and the work of other actors in
my group, focusing on the mediums, elements and explorative strategies of Drama.
In Hour One, we explored the play by using two explorative strategies, which are still image and
thought tracking. Task One was to create four still images that showed ... Show more content on

We were first tasked to create a sound piece in groups of 6 depicting what happened from when Jo and
Judy left the bar up to the accident. There was a moment after the opening when Jo and Judy were
reversing, an impression created through Actor 1 s beep sound effect. The beeping got faster
continuously, and Actor 2 (Jo) shouted Judy slow down a bit! before they started to laugh. The
beeping that gradually got faster suggested that the car was going to crash into something, before their
laughter breaks the tension and gives the scene an anti climax. This suggests that they are in a drunken
state, because people would not usually be laughing at the prospect of crashing their car. This also
efficaciously foreshadows the tragic accident that occurs later. To further build up the tension, Actor 1
could have walked towards the audience as he performed the sound effect to suggest that the car was
crashing into them. For Task Two we were required to add movement to the piece. A section near the
end portrayed the accident as it happened. Actors 2 and 3(Judy) were sat on blocks behind two tables,
symbolizing the front of the car. Actor 1 and I crouched on either side of the tables wearing white
masks and right after Actor 3 shouted Judy slow down a bit! , we flipped the tables violently to the
side and stood straight up. The purpose of the white mask was to hide our identity, creating a

3d Stringing Research Paper
3D printing ensures pinpoint accuracy, enables mass customization and gives you the ability of
handling almost any level of complexity. With this technology we can literally say that you are limited
by your imagination. While the printing technology is awesome, it comes with its fair share of
negatives. Here are 4 common 3D printing problems and how to fix them:
Warping
Warping is when one or more corners of your printing machine lift up until the base of the model is no
longer at level with the print platform. This results to horizontal cracks in the upper parts of your
machine.
The problem comes about when the plastic of the first layers of your machine cool down thus start
shrinking.
To fix the problem you need to identify the cause of the problem. One of the ways of fixing the ...

There are many ways in which you can do it. One of the most effective ways is using rafts which give
the print a larger surface area at the base.
Stringing
If you have been using your printing machine for long you must have come across this problem.
Stringing happens when you have tiny little hairs between the gaps of your print.
The problem results when some filament drips from the nozzle when the print moves over an open
part.
Stringing is a problem that fixable. One of the ways of fixing it is enabling retraction. Retraction is a
feature on your printing software. When you enable retraction the printer retracts the filament in the
nozzle before the travel moves. This ensures that no surplus plastic drips from the nozzle thus
producing strings.
Cracks
Cracks are common on tall, thin models. The cracks and gaps are found in the sides of the model. The
cool thing with the problem is that it s easy to fix. One of the things that you need to do is increase the
extruder temperature in 10 degree increments. If this trick doesn t work increase the bed temperature
by 5 15 degrees.

Machiavelli s The Prince
The Renaissance represented a new era in which values such as secularism and power became
prevalent in society. Machiavelli expresses the need for politics and religion to be separated
throughout his book The Prince . Previously rulers had been restricted by Christian principals, but
Machiavelli held the idea that rulers were warranted in any action so as long as it benefited the general
public. Machiavelli believed that politics existed outside the realm of religion and morals.
Subsequently, he approved of using any means necessary to gain and keep power, including lying,
stealing, and murder. During this time Italy s city states were in political chaos and condottieri roamed
the streets. Machiavelli thought it was the ruler s duty to maintain discipline and peace in society at
any cost. Despite his intentions to help Italy, Machiavelli s ideas were often seen as immoral and
dishonest. The idea of a purely political action where morals were set aside is later referred to as the

Tax Law Personal Statement Essay
Personal Statement For those who want to live in a foreign country, there are many to expect. But for
those who are already living in a foreign country, there are more to learn and adapt. The year after
moving to the United States, my brother and I started our small trade company in the shared bedroom
of our packed apartment. Day after day, my job was to knock on doors of retail stores and try to get a
conversation with someone. I was a sales representative. I was there to sell jeans. On a summer day, I
was sitting across the table from a store manager in Downtown L.A. After careful examinations of my
jeans samples, he indicated that we might have an opportunity to work together. I was relieved and
happy. But when he started suggesting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My participation in the trade business ended when I transferred to Washington University for my
undergraduate study. The lessons I have learned nevertheless directed me to become an auditor in one
of the big four accounting firms after I graduated. This experience reinforced my belief in integrity
and business opportunities. More importantly, I have cultivated a strong passion in tax law. Its
dynamic nature demonstrates countless opportunities for business thrifts. In light of tax code
overhauls and disruptive technology developments globally, I see increasing demand for professionals
with integrated knowledge in client business, accounting, tax research, and technology. My decision to
pursue a career that fulfills my long standing interest in tax law is a simple one and has never been
stronger. The lessons I have learned over my years in the States have remained inspiring and relevant
to my life. My business experience and auditor career taught me right from wrong and equally
importantly, how to do things right. I expect law school will help give me the knowledge to better
assist businesses in integrating tax strategies into their operations and tools to further my ability to
study and interpret the ever changing tax

Summary Of Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven
The long and often dark history between the white man and their co inhabitants, the Native Americans
has been recognized on a global stage since the very first interaction between the two groups.
Although several hundred years has passed and the two populations may not be chasing one another
down on horseback, a fruitful relationship still does not exist. This poor relationship is a focal point of
Sherman Alexie, a Spokane tribe member, in his story, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in
Heaven. Through the interactions and events of his Native American character, Victor, Alexie shows
the isolation of Native Americans due to this tension that underlies the relationship between Native
Americans and mainstream American society. America as a country praises the concepts of equality
and unification, which are at the roots of the constitution. However, from the very beginning of Alexie
s story the reader is submerged into the tension ridden relationship between Native Americans and the
white American when Victor, who is a Native American living in Seattle after leaving his reservation,
enters the 7 11 late at night. As soon as victor enters the store he can tell that the clerk, who is white,
becomes nervous due to his dark skin (80). Although the clerk never directly states that the presence
of Victor made him uneasy and fearful of a crime being committed, his body language, which Victor
could read, was all that was needed to fabricate a division between the two. Not

`` Stolen Legacy, By George James, A Guyanese Historian...
Throughout time, there have been deep misconceptions on who the fathers of philosophy and greatest
contributors to civilization. In the 1954 book, Stolen Legacy, George James, a Guyanese historian and
author, argued that the highly acclaimed Greek philosophy actually originated in ancient Egypt. James
arguments on Ancient Egypt being the basis of Greek philosophy will be discussed as it relates to the
goals of Egyptian theory of salvation and Egyptian Mystery system.
The Stolen Legacy begins with uncovering how the Egyptian s held a Mystery System, which was the
oldest in the world considered a Secret Order that required membership and pledged secrecy. Thus the
Egyptians developed secret systems of writing and teaching that if forbade others from imitating their
work. It was not until the Greeks were allowed into the temples that the invasion of Alexander the
Destructor plundered the temples and libraries and allowed the Greeks to gain access to the ancient
books. James further explains that this is where Aristotle built his school of thought and legacy. In
essence, this explanation is the basis of James view.
The education of Egyptian priests and the legacy of the Mystery System show that Egypt was the
source of higher education in the ancient world, futhermore, key Ionian and Italian philosophers such
as Pythagoras, Thales, Democritus had obtained their education from Egyptian priests despite their
acclaim as being the greatest philosophers to date. The teachings of

##riesel s Speech In The Perils Of Indifference By Eliie...
American Jewish author and Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel in his critical speech, The Perils of
Indifference, suggests his message about the inhumanity of indifference and how the importance of
resistance is still relevant today. He develops his message by emphasizing how indifference is not only
dangerous, but is the most evil characteristic of our society today. For example, Wiesel states in
paragraph 13, Indifference, then, is not only a sin, it is a punishment. These truthful words assist in
understanding the author s emphasis on indifference and its danger in our world; to add on, Wiesel
also uses rhetorical questions throughout the text to highlight powerful and important users of
indifference during the time period which he lived in. A question from the speech in paragraph 20 is,
Why the indifference, on the highest level, to the suffering of the victims? This line in the text
exemplifies his belief that indifference is human nature if we do not rid ourselves of it. In brief, the
author explains how indifference is tempting in society because of the degree of effort one puts into
being indifferent, which is little to none. Wiesel s purpose is to inform the readers why indifference is
inhumane and to create awareness of indifference in order to persuade those readers not to be
indifferent to others. He establishes both serious and thankful tones for readers by using stylistic
and/or rhetorical device such as repetition and imagery in order to develop his

The Most Convincing Justification for Private Property
The most convincing justification for private property provided by Ziff is that of economic efficiency.
Private property incentivises innovation, lowers the cost of dealing with externalities, and with
moderation, reduces the susceptibility of property to the tragedy of the commons. Economic efficiency
holds particular weight because of the significant amount of today s societies that rely on a market
based system to conduct business, trade and commerce. This system lists private property as one of its
founding tenets and therefore heightens the justification s persuasiveness. It is not suggested that a
fully privatised property regime would be ideal either, but a mixture of both private property and
communal property is seen as the best ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To the contrary Ziff argues that the cost of policing would also be more expensive under a private
property regime as the creation of boundaries would add costs that would not have otherwise have
existed. Conversely Grafton suggests that the cost of boundary erection is merely temporary, as after
the initial set up of boundaries, cost of negotiations and policing are comparatively reduced.
Communal property rights contrast this; as they hold long term economic costs to the interest owners
as negotiation costs will continue to increase exponentially, as policing costs are not one off, and
negotiation costs are comparatively higher . It is therefore evident that private property provides the
most economically efficient method of dealing with externalities in the short run and the long run, as
costs and reaction time are rapidly reduced.
Ziff also argues that the over distribution of private property may result in myopic view of
externalities, as each land owner would only care for their own property and not about the needs of the
wider community affected by externalities created by their land. This short term view, is an inherent
downfall of private property, but society has developed means and ways in which these costs can be
met, for example through regulatory authorities, and it is therefore argued that a fully privatise
property regime would not be preferable but a partly common and partly private alternative, as

The World s First Short Message Service
On December 3, 1992, the world s first short message service, or SMS, was sent. Neil Papworth, a 22
year old communications engineer from the United Kingdom sent the simple message Merry
Christmas, to a friend via PC (Gayomali, 2012). Like almost all new technologies, the initial reception
of the SMS was slow. In 1995, two years after Nokia released the first ever texting phone, the average
American user sent just 0.4 texts per month (Gayomali and Erickson, 2012). Almost 22 years later, six
billion SMS messages are sent every day in the United States (Kelly, 2012). Text messaging is one of
the most widely used data applications in the world, as 81% of cellphone users have texting as an
option on their phones (Erickson, 2012). As its popularity has continued to grow at an exponential
rate, it more frequently raises the question of whether or not the act of text messaging has ruined the
art of conversation. Texting has many advantages. For one, the recipient of a text does not have to be
present to receive a message. Currently, the majority of text messages are sent to individuals for
personal reasons (Faulkner, 2012). Though it is not face to face communication, texting is used as a
one to one method of communication between friends, particularly teenagers (Faulkner, 2012). Long
distance relationships, friendships and various other connections have become possible due to the fact
that people can communicate on a constant basis despite being apart. Texting has

African Slaves In The Novel Saltwater Slavery By Smallwood
The Natchez District where a tribe of Indians were housed as slaves was the first Mississippi region
where plantations were established. There African slaves were introduced into the Natchez plantation
system in the early 1700s by the French colonists where the first major profitable crop that thrived
from African slave labor in Natchez was tobacco products. The slaves shipped here came with a
militant spirit after being harbored amongst the torturous vessels. Their aggression, at first took the
form of resistance on slave ships as many deckhands and captive slaves experienced the unforgiving
waters, this is again explained in the novel Saltwater Slavery written by Smallwood. One of the
earliest recorded incidents of a slave resistance was the Natchez Indian Revolt of 1729 against the
French colonists. The African arrival in Natchez did not quell this militancy. Instead it caused the
Natchez to increase their aggression. However, the French quickly recognized the preceding contact
and interaction between the slaves and the Natchez Indians and as a counter they, (the French)
eventually extended their cruelty to the Indians. The Natchez Indians became aware that the French
began to whip young Indian boys just as they did their African slaves, along with the French
commander at Fort Rosalie taking the Natchez land, encouraged the Natchez nobles to act in
retaliation. To reflect the cruelty of the French, Natchez Indians recruited several slaves, promising
them freedom, and in

Mark Twain And Saul Bellow
Humor in the works of Mark Twain and Saul Bellow
The inclusion of humor in writings is one of the essential factors that every author should incorporate
for the success of their works. The writings or rather novels with flashes of humor tend to do well in
the market for the readers as compared to other writings which are purely comic fictions or without
incorporation of humors. Humor facilitate in reader identification, assign positive traits to characters,
convey character relationships, delight readers and get them to read the material closely (Column Us,
2017). Mark Twain and Bellow are some of the renowned American authors that have incorporated the
use of senses of humor in their writings and this has made their literature works successful for a long
period of time. The paper discusses how the two authors have used humor in their works. The
American Author, Mark Twain, utilizes humor in his works through several ways. Twain as an author
forms unforgettable and hilarious characters in his works. He uses Tom Sawyer who is especially
prominent as a funny and clever creation in the passages. His train of crazy ideas, thought, childish
logic, acting ability, cruel pranks, wit, and imagination cause a laughter to readers which make them
read the passages several times. The composition of funny characters which are intelligence in the way
of presenting the ideas, enhance in creation of humors in the Twain s novels. This makes readers to

Racism In Racism
Racism has always been a problem with this country, but lately people are starting to express
themselves and their ethnicity. Football is a big deal to this country because it is our sport. NFL
players are speaking out, well actually they are standing out to show America that they are not okay
with how they are being treated. When a national figure such as an NFL player refuses to stand for the
national anthem, it shocks people into paying attention and generates conversation. Three reasons why
athletes should kneel down for the national anthem are they should protest to show their concerns, it s
not an official rule, and NFL players should have a right of freedom.
First, athletes should protest their concerns. For example, Kaepernick kneeling was to bring attention
to police brutality against African Americans. According to Autumn Allison, the author of Why do
NFL players protest during national anthem? A timeline: From Kaepernick to Trump there have been
significant words used disrespectfully. Trump made an extremely decisive statement about the players
who kneel, calling them an unnecessary word and that they should get fired. In addition, Trump said
that kneeling has nothing to do with race, but it actually does from the injustice in the country. Many
players protest because they are not being treated fairly, so they re expressing their feelings.
Secondly It s not an official rule for NFL players to stand during the national anthem. For example
The Seattle Seahawks said as a team Out of love for our country and in honor of the sacrifices made
on our behalf, we unite to oppose those that would deny our most basic freedoms. According to
Anthem kneeling isn t aimed at veterans, and other NFL protest misconceptions by Josh Hafner, it is
stated that kneeling down is not just respect for the country but Colin Kaepernick said I am not going
to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. In
addition, Smith and Carlos (two NFL players) raised their fists in the air to protest against social
injustice, racism, and discrimination during a time of high tension in the United States. Smith and
Carlos raised their fists mostly because they were protesting

Theory : a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on

The Brown V. Board Of Education Essay
The Brown v. Board of Education was a case that was initiated by members of the local NAACP
(National association Advancement of Colored People) organization in Topeka, Kansas where thirteen
parents volunteered to participate of the segregation during school. Parents took their children to
schools in their neighborhoods in the summer of 1950 and attempted to enroll them for the upcoming
school year. All students were refused admission and were forced to attend one of the four schools in
the city for African Americans. For most parents and students, this involved traveling some distance
from their homes. These parents filed suit against the Topeka Board of Education on behalf of their
twenty children. Oliver Brown who was a minister, was the first parent to suit against the problem, so
the case came to be named after his last name. Three local lawyers, Charles Bledsoe, Charles Scott
and John Scott, were assisted by Robert Carter and Jack Greenberg from the NAACP Legal Defense
and Educational Fund. Oliver Brown had declared that Topeka s racial segregation violated the
Constitution s Equal Protection Clause because the city s black and white schools were not equal to
each other and never could be due to the way things were. The federal district court dismissed his
claim, ruling that the segregated public schools were substantially equal enough to be constitutional
under the Plessy case doctrine. Brown appealed to the Supreme Court, which made it more effective

What Is The Theme Of The Palm Wine Drunkard
The Palm wine Drinkard is a short story that follows a man whose life was centered on the drinking of
palm wine and with the help of his palm wine tapster, he could drink as much as he wanted together
with his friends. His tapster finally dies after falling from a tall palm tree whilst tapping palm
wine. The man who is referred to as the palm wine drunkard buries the body of his tapster and embarks
on a very long journey to find him in the land of the dead, which reveals various supernatural
encounters throughout his journey. Although the author masterfully uses magical realism,
personification, simile and irony to vividly tell the story of the drunkard, the improper poor use of
proper grammar surprisingly made the text more understandable to read.
The setting of this story is not clearly disclosed but from the author s choice of words like the use of
juju , traveling from bushes to bushes and native blacksmiths , there is a clear depiction of a typical
African village setting. In the story, the author seeks to create a picture of a world of traditional
mythologies in the mind of the reader, where human beings easily mingle with beings from the
spiritual world. The author also presents a world where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The point within the story where the drunkard turned into a bird, death commanding the strings of a
drum to tie the drunkard and also the Drinkard commanding the ropes of yam to tie him whilst the

claimed he was the Father of the gods who could do everything in this world and yet still, he spent all
his time consulting various characters where he could find his dead tapster creates some irony at this
point. But at a point in the story, there is also evidence that he is indeed the Father of the gods since he
was able to capture death and turn into a bird at a

Abstract. The Common Cold And Influenza Are Two Common
Abstract
The common cold and Influenza are two common illnesses of the upper respiratory tract. These illness
can often be mistaken for each other due to the overlapping symptoms. The two symptoms that seem
to present when the flu is occurring are a fever with a cough. Prevention is also similar for both of the
illnesses with the exception of an actual vaccine that can be administered annually for flu prevention.
Diagnosis can occur in the physicians office according to the individuals symptoms that are presenting
or by completing an rapid flu test. Treatments are also similar for both the common cold and the flu
because they are both caused by viruses, therefore a patient would not benefit from antibiotic therapy.

The symptoms of an upper respiratory tract infection can be caused by several other viruses and
bacteria. It is important to seek proper medical treatment to receive the correct diagnosis, which will
prevent severe illness and from spreading to other people.
The Common Cold. An acute viral infection of the upper respiratory tract is often spread by hand
contact from an infected person. This may be from direct, indirect, or aerosol of the secretions and the
virus (Allan and Arroll, pg 190). The common cold is often less severe than the flu but has similar
symptoms. The cold typically is a shorter mild illness with symptoms gradually occurring. It is known
to start with sneezing, sore throat, possible chills, and headache. As the cold enhances the patient may
present with nasal drainage or congestion and cough. A cold is preventable with physical
interventions, probiotics, and exercise. Physical interventions are extremely important in preventing
illness and preventing the illness from spreading. These interventions can include hand washing, using
alcohol based solutions, gloves, masks, and gowns (Allan and Arroll, pg 192). The most common
treatments for the common cold include antihistamines, decongestants, antitussives, and
acetaminophen. One study of guaifenesin found no benefit; in another, 75% of participants reported
that guaifenesin was helpful for their cough, compared with 31% given placebo (Allan

Apothecary In The Colonial Era
Trades There were many interesting trades presented on this website. One of these trades that
interested me the most was apothecary. Apothecary in the colonial era was a druggist who had a
similar roles to what a doctor does today. They didn t just provide medical treatment, or prescribe
drugs but also performed surgeries as well. Reading more about this trade, I discovered that some
apothecaries even trained to become man midwives. Before reading this article, I had the assumption
that the majority of mid wives were female, and that most men didn t handle child birth in that time
era. Furthermore, some of the ingredients used in colonial remedies, that is still found in modern
medicine. Some include, but are limited to; chalk for heartburn (Tums), calamine for skin irritations
(Aveeno lotions) and many more. Like many drug stores today, apothecaries also sold household items
and not just drugs. The next most interesting trade in the colonial period was Gunsmiths. It is very
neat to me how the gunsmiths didn t only work with metals but also with wood. In fact, the stock of a
gun was made with one piece of wood and later engraved. Even the metal used in the guns were
intricately engraved as well. The gunsmith wasn t just limited to making firearms ... Show more

interesting fact about the Tucker house is that they were the first in Williamsburg to put a Christmas

At least, now alert citizens can slow down corrupt officers and politicians.Third, Indian politics will
hopefully mature as more information passes through the hands of political rivals, police, judiciary,
media and the people. The Act will reveal who is exploiting whom and how one can get justice for the
poor and the needy. The judiciary will now have better data to decide against the corrupt. That sounds
so far flung, doesn t it? Let us start from the district level. If the road leading to your town is washed
out in the first rains of the season, you might like to ask who was given the contract to build that road,
at what price and what the terms and conditions were. Was the contractor related to a Member of
Parliament or a member of legislative assembly in that area? During the building of that road, did any
government officer object to any deficiency or malpractice? Was there any communication in this
regard? The concerned departments will have to come up with answers in the stipulated period.
Some panchayats are run by local goons or the community caste heads. They bully people when
someone raises questions of accounts and money spent. The Sarpanch or development officers are
rarely forthcoming. Now, all resources and their distribution will have to be transparent on paper. The

services that s bad. If the customer service is bad it doesn t necessarily mean it s the employees fault;
it s more than likely the customers fault. If they have someone screaming at them for hours on end it
wears them out and makes them snap. Customers only have to deal with someone being mean for the
time they are at the drive thru, where as the worker has to sit through hours of screaming and

Figurative Language In Alice In Wonderland
An author frequently exemplifies different messages and conflict within a story or novel. More often
or not, an author portrays certain types of literary devices to convey a message between the setting and
characters. In Lewis Carroll s novel, Alice in Wonderland, Alice s curiosity and innocence as a child in
the Victorian Era leads to her exploring another world called Wonderland. She is challenged to find
the true meaning of exploring outside of an ordinary world which leads her to question her own
identity. The depths of wonderland and many influences Alice stumbles across changes the dynamics
of her inner self from a child to an adult. The white rabbit resembles her escape outside of reality into

Carroll uses the food and drinks as a way of representing Alice s curious appetite for growing up in
her societal role. As she wanders around Wonderland, her curiosity often leads to her eating or
drinking an object in order to satisfy her curiosity. When she drinks the Drink Me substance she says,
Curiouser and curiouser! Cried Alice she was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot
how to speak good English (Carroll 6). Many times throughout the novel, Alice adventures revolve
around food and drinks such as sweet baked snacks, potions and tea to appease her curiosity. Alice
begins to lose control of her eating and drinking habits of Wonderland which demonstrates her
maturity as she looks towards adulthood in the reality world. The more food and drinks Alice applies
to herself, Carroll establishes the metaphor of growing up results in unpredictable events and changes
that are irreversible. Alice stumbles across the Cheshire Cat who portrays the opposite of growing up
as he believes taking short cuts are better than asking for advice. The Chesire cat exclaims to Alice,
Then it doesn t matter which way you go (Carroll 49). The metaphor from the Cheshire Cat resulted
from Alice asking about visiting the Mad Hatter. In this case, The Cheshire Cat is a representation of
taking the easy route and not visiting the mad hatter,

A Brief Note On The Barrier Of Participation For Carers
One barrier to participation for carers is time. Some carers may be short on time and therefore want to
spend time with their child rather than talking about them. This needs to be dealt with sensitively as
carers may feel guilty that they can t do as much as they would like. There are many ways to
overcome this. One of these is using home link books. These are books in which practitioners and
carers can exchange information, comments and ideas on a daily basis. Another way to overcome this
is with emails. Providing that all consent and security issues are considered, email exchanges can
work well. Photographs can also be exchanged as well as information so carers can send photographs
of their child at home or during an outing. A third way to overcome this barrier is phone calls. Phone
calls can be an effective substitute to face to face conversations. Another way to overcome this is
parents sessions at a range of times. Parents sessions are good for relaying information but these need
to be held at times that are convenient for carers. Another barrier to participation for carers is
confidence. Some carers may find it hard to be active in their child s care and education as they may
have had less than satisfactory interactions with other professionals. They may also feel that they do
not have anything of interest to add or that their views would not be of interest. To overcome this
barrier it is important that practitioners make parents first contact a positive one and

Compare And Contrast Huntington And Fukuyama
Samuel Huntington and Francis Fukuyama
The Berlin Wall was about to fall, the Soviet Union was collapsing, and the world was clamoring for
the consumerist boom in an orgy of free market handful experience, international politics began
travelling out of a Westernized phase, and the relation between the West and the rest began to
crystallize and contest.
Huntington and Fukuyama both provide ground breaking paradigms that explain the complexities of
an embryonic post Cold War world. Their distinct ideologies are a result of their respective false
consciousness which, stems from particular political ideas embodying different social interests.
Huntington peddles a culturalist thesis whilst Fukuyama embodies a framework of universalization of
western liberal democracy in the socio cultural evolution to the end point of human governance.
Fukuyama presented his argument in 1992, and his teacher responded in 1993 with his theory, The
clash of civilizations . Not only do their theories differ from one another, but we see a stark difference
in their writing style as well. Huntington refers to his thesis as a hypothesis, indicating an experiment

societies become successful liberal societies, merely that they end their ideological pretensions of

Wide Sargasso Sea Analysis
In Wide Sargasso Sea, by Jean Rhys, culture causes belonging as well as insecurity. In this novel,
characters from the Caribbean and England are put side by side to highlight how strong cultures affect
those without one. Christophine and R hold strong ties to their identities through their ethnic
background, while Antionette is left wondering, who I am and where is my country and where do I
belong (61). Rhys uses the binary opposition of these two contrasting characters to convey that people
rely on their cultures for their identity and because of this, those who do not fit into a certain group
have trouble defining themselves.
Christophine, a former slave and servant to Antionette s family, relies on her Afro Caribbean roots to
dictate her beliefs and shape her as a person. When Antionette wants Christophine to help her using
obeah, Christophine tells Antionette that obeah is not for béké , using the word béké, a slang term for a
white person (68). Through this, Christophine separates herself from Antionette and defines herself
through her ethnic background. Although she is very close to Antionette, Christophine clearly
identifies with a different culture and therefore there is a distance between them that cannot be
removed. This culture is one that she identifies so strongly with that she will risk being caught and
thrown in jail for her beliefs. It is revealed by Daniel Cosway that Christophine was put in jail for
practicing obeah but she continues to practice this

In Defense Of Bottled Water By Thomas J. Lauria
Bottled Water Versus Cost According to The Water Project, Bottles used to package water take over
1,000 years to bio degrade and if incinerated, they produce toxic fumes. It is estimated that over 80%
of all single use water bottles used in the U.S. simply become litter ( Bottled Water is Wasteful ). This
fact is not the only reason I believe that bottled water does not outweigh its costs. Although statistics
show that bottled water is efficient, there are many reasons to believe otherwise. As aforementioned,
there are explanations to believe that bottled water does outweigh its repercussions. Thomas J. Lauria,
author of In Defense of Bottled Water , states, Bottled water provides a healthy choice when tap water
is not accessible ( In Defense of Bottled Water ). In this article, Lauria states that bottled water is a
topic of great interest. He goes on to discuss that in the United States, Adults consume 450 calories a
day from beverages and sixty eight percent of those twenty years old and older are classified as
overweight or obese, bottled water provides a healthy choice when tap water is not accessible,
preferred, or convenient ( In Defense of Bottled Water ). Sure, this is fact and definitely a benefit to
bottled water. Lauria continues to say that if bottled water is not offered then people will be more
likely to choose soda, juices, or options similar to those. He says that banning bottled water will urge
people to consume unhealthy beverages because

Deception According to Hyman (1989) deception implies that an agent acts or speaks so as to induce a
false belief in a target or victim. Deception can occur in everyday life. Whether it is telling someone
they look nice or not telling them that they look fat. This is an important process for forming
relationships and general social interaction. However, although this is useful for social interaction, it is

Police officers). A recent study by Mann, Vrij and Bull (2004) showed that when shown videotapes of
real life lies and truths and found that the officers had an accuracy of 65%. This was found to be better
than lab studies using, normal (non trained) participants. Additionally, accuracy was negatively
correlated with popular stereotypical cues such as gaze aversion and fidgeting. However, although this
suggests that human lie detection is fairly accurate, earlier research has found the opposite. According
to Wallace (1999), psychological research on deception shows that most of us are poor judges of
truthfulness. One may assume that this only applies to only ordinary people and not professionals.
However further research shows that this applies to professionals such as police and custom
inspectors, whose jobs are supposed to include some expertise at lie detection (Wallace, 1999). An
early study by Kraut and Poe (1980) that custom inspectors showed accuracy scores rarely exceed
65% where 50% is the chance level. A later study by Kohnken (1987) showed that police officers

a much better experience to talk to somebody who is able to utilize the different services offered. My
sage has been receiving medical transportation to and from her many medical appointments, but is
only able to do so for one appointment a day. If she is unable to schedule the transportation through
the required time frame, she is allowed to get somebody to

Rio Host Impacts Essay

Title Every four years the world goes into a clamor for the Olympic Games, and cities aggressively
bid for the right to host these events. Cities literally fight for the right to hold these games and spend
exorbitant amounts of money in the hopes of bringing the worlds Olympiad s to their municipality.
But, is the prestige of being the host worth it for the host city? It is becoming more apparent that these
endeavors are detrimental to the economy, if you look at the five most recent summer Olympics; Rio
de Janeiro, London, Beijing, Athens, and Sydney. Many of these cities apply with the hopes of a
positive long term impact, many in recent times to be severely disappointed. Rio won it s Olympic bid
in 2009, after several years of solid GDP growth and was one of the most dynamic emerging
economies at the time. The summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro were plagued by controversy even
before the games started, with concerns over the outbreak of the Zika virus as well as the concerns
about the water in the area (Rapoza). After Brazil announced that it would host the 2016 Olympics it
has invested twelve billion dollars in infrastructure alone between 2009 2015, something that had to
be developed to support the influx of tourists and athletes (Rapoza). This investment in the
infrastructure and public spending increased the debt of Rio by 17%, and the state received a bailout
from the government in June. In the investment phase there was

Ralph Bullying Research Paper
Fatty! Pig! Fatty! Come on Fatty keep up! In a community people think it is awesome to bully people.
Bullying is teasing someone because people are overweight, or people are jealous. For example,
people usually get bullied because people are overweight, or have down syndrome. The people behind
this bullying are usually the jocks. Consider the people that are hurt everyday because of bullying. For
instance, more people are hurt then being excited or happy. Let s stop bullying because people are
alike and no one is perfect. This world is not perfect by any means, so no one will be perfect. Also,
people should try to act like people are perfect. People on Earth should be like brothers and sisters.

For example, in beginning all the kids wanted to be chief and Jack got jealous and wants to be chief
(Golding 23). Jack needs to understand that he isn t perfect, and he can t be number one. The world
doesn t involve around Jack it s about everyone. Another poor decision was when Jack spilt the tribe
up (Golding 150). Jack can t settle on being a follower he has to be the lead. There are little kids
around that Ralph and the group are trying to save, but Jack is to stubborn to realize that. He has made
it all about himself even if people get hurt. For example, Piggy died because Jack teasing him
(Golding 181). Piggy died because Roger launch a rock the hit Piggy that hit him in the chin to knee
(Golding 181). Don t be stubborn in some ways help because it s not all about power. Don t let people
push others around. Stand up for who people can be. Say what people should say. It s better to say the
truth then making a poor decision can take someone s life even though the truth hurts. In Lord Of The
Flies shows that poor decision and bullying like everyday life. Bullying is rough people get hurt and
tear themselves down. Also bullying causes people to feel so horrible they do not want to live
anymore. Poor decision making can cost someone s life or even their own life. Like it cost two people

Symbols In Looking For Alaska, By John Green
Looking For Alaska is a dynamic novel which was published in 2005 by Dutton Books, and is written
by world famous John Green. The story which John Green tells is about a group of intelligent but lost
teenagers, who are freshmen in Culver Creek Boarding School. The story revolves around Alaska
Young, Miles Pudge Halter and Chip Cornel Martins. These teens are contrary to shallow, more or less
opposite; and their thoughts are as deep as the Mariana Trench. Their complicated way of looking at
life, seeking simplicity and grasp in a complex world eventually hurts them.
Throughout the novel, John green discusses the word labyrinth as the simile for Suffering. Labyrinth
is a symbol for pain and suffering. The suffering we; the normal people ... Show more content on

Doing wrong and having wrong things happen to you. That s the problem. Bolivar was talking about
the pain, not about the living or dying. How do you get out of the labyrinth of suffering?... Nothing s
wrong. But there s always suffering, Pudge. Homework or malaria or having a boyfriend who lives far
away when there s a good looking boy lying next to you. Suffering is universal. It s the one thing
Buddhists, Christians, and Muslims are all worried about. The one thing we learned about Alaska was
that she was very troubled and depressed girl like most of the teenagers these days but she was also
very unpredictable and spontaneous rightly so because she witnessed her mother s death and feeling
the guilt of not saving her, ruined her own life. Her answer to the question How will we ever get out of
this labyrinth of suffering? was straight and fast . She died because of carelessness and immaturity of
driving when she was drunk. She left her friends with the guilt of not saving her and not understanding
what was going on her mind all the time when in my opinion she herself did not know what was going
on her own mind and how to escape from her inner demons and that was the main reason of her

Computer Field And Technical Education Programs
The lack of qualified employees in computer and technology fields is a perplexing issue for the United
States as it strives to stay competitive in a global economy. According to an article by the Bureau of
National Affairs, two of the top three toughest jobs to fill are technology related (Bureau of National
Affairs, 2012, p. 6). Although there are many theories as to why more students are not choosing to
major in some type of computer field, resolutions to this problem are slow in developing. Could a
solution be emerging from career and technical education programs? In 2012 Microsoft Corporation
sponsored a study that estimated the U.S. creates 120,000 new computer science jobs each year.
Colleges and universities, however, are only graduating 49,000 students per year with degrees to fill
those positions. This gap has companies scrambling to find qualified personnel and many are turning
to foreign workers using the H1 B Visa program (Beach, 2013, p. 3). With 7.9 million Americans
unemployed, this is not a popular choice and creates a potential image problem for companies (United
States Department of Labor, 2015). Once considered a dumping ground for students who could not
handle a typical high school curriculum, career and technical education has progressed over the last 30
years. Now, students from a variety of academic levels enroll in CTE programs (Hoachlander, 2008, p.
25). Additionally, pathways once considered specific to a certain gender are being

The Debate Of The Drinking Age
The drinking age has always been twenty one in the United States, whenever it has been questioned on
why twenty one and not eighteen. The scientific answer has always been because the eighteen year old
brain is not fully developed yet. See what I have a hard time understanding is why eighteen year olds
are considered adults at the age of eighteen, but we can t have a drink. At eighteen you are allowed to
buy cigarettes, join the army, change your name. I just don t understand why at eighteen you are
considered old enough to fight for the country, but you can t just have a drink. I also do not quite
understand why we haven t moved the age of becoming a legal adult to twenty one. Back in 1984 the
government wanted to get a firm grasp on the country and wanted to knock them into line. So they
made a deal with all the states that simply stated. Either make the minimum drinking age twenty one
or lose up to 10% of the federal highway funding. Now that s some serious cash, so of course all the
states went along with it and that is how the minimum drinking age came into play. The federal
government did not just pick the number twenty one out of a hat. Twenty one came from the early
English century. That was the age you could vote or become a knight back in that day. Since they
became an adult then it only makes sense that they can drink. ( Why Is the Drinking Age 21? ). Which
goes back to my first point, why are eighteen year olds considered adults at eighteen, but cannot
drink?

I Am My Graduate Career
When I began my undergraduate career, I had no inkling of what I wanted to do in the future. It was
early on that I discovered my passion for chemistry, math and physics classes which galvanized my
hunger for knowledge. In due time, I developed a proclivity for research that was stirred largely by my
first mentor, Dr. Daniel Lambrecht, during an American Chemical Society meeting. I was so
engrossed in his research on nanocatalysis and piezoelectrics that I walked up to him as soon as the
meeting ended and immediately made clear of my interest to join his group.
I left my undergraduate career conflicted about whether to pursue a degree in chemistry or chemical
engineering. Through a combination of independent research, advice from mentors, and on the job
industrial experience, I have realized that my interests align more with chemical engineering. The
broad range of career paths and opportunities for technological innovation draws me to the field of
engineering. With chemical, physical, and mathematical concepts as well as industrial know how,
engineers transform ideas into useful and attainable products that impact the lives of many.
My experiences during my undergraduate and professional careers have had profound impacts on me
by providing opportunities for self discovery and allowing me to explore my interests. At the
University of Pittsburgh Chemical Engineering Ph.D. program, I hope to explore my interests in
nanotechnology, surface chemistry interactions, and

Waimea Canyon Essay
Waimea Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, is a large canyon, approximately ten
miles (16 km) long and up to 3,000 feet (900 m) deep, located on the western side of Kauaʻi in the
Hawaiian Islands of the United States. Waimea is Hawaiian for reddish water , a reference to the
erosion of the canyon s red soil.[1] The canyon was formed by a deep incision of the Waimea River
arising from the extreme rainfall on the island s central peak, Mount Waiʻaleʻale, among the wettest
places on earth.
Geologically the canyon is carved into the tholeiitic and post shield calc alkaline lavas of the canyon
basalt. The lavas of the canyon provide evidence for massive faulting and collapse in the early history
of the island. The west side of the canyon is all thin, west dipping lavas of the Napali Member, while
the east side is very thick, flat lying lavas of the Olokele and Makaweli Members. The two sides are
separated by an enormous fault along which a large part of the ... Show more content on

Like the other Hawaiian islands, Kauaʻi is the top of an enormous volcano rising from the ocean floor.
With lava flows dated to about 5 million years ago, Kauaʻi is the oldest of the large Hawaiian islands.
Roughly 4 million years ago, while Kauaʻi was still erupting almost continuously, a portion of the
island collapsed. This collapse formed a depression, which then filled with lava flows.
In the time since, rainwater from the slopes of Mount Waiʻaleʻale have eroded Waimea Canyon along
one edge of the collapse. The cliffs on the west side of the canyon are composed of thin lava flows
that ran down the surface of the Kauaʻi volcano. On the other side of the canyon, the cliff walls are
built from thick lava flows that pooled in the depression. Over time, the exposed basalt has weathered

How Do Specific Enzymes Affect The Reaction Rate Of Reaction
Introduction Specific enzymes made up of proteins are used in biology to speed up a chemical
reaction of any kind. Since a spontaneous chemical reaction can occur without help from any outside
energy it could potentially prolong the reaction to where it becomes almost unnoticeable since it can
take years for it to happen. For this reason, enzymes take action as a catalyst that speed up the reaction
rate without completely being absorbed (Campbell et al., 2010). Enzymes are a form of regulation that
allow for a through pathway in chemical reactions. It is able to perform as a catalyst by lowering the
activation energy which is the energy required to drive the reactant to the top of the energy barrier
allowing the downhill part to begin. An

Research Report On Financial Reporting
Abstract
As the going concern issues in financial reporting: a guide for companies and directors (Australian
Institute of Company Directors, 2009) indicated, The going concern assumption is a fundamental
principle that underlies the preparation of the vast majority of financial reports (incorporated in the
annual reports) of Australian companies , the main purpose of this research report is aimed to
investigate the importance of going concern concept to both directors and the users of financial
reports. This report will focus on the problems that might rise from the absence of an appropriate
going concern, the recent unfavoured macro economy condition affect the audit opinion of a going
concern, and the importance of the going concern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is upon their discretion and the appropriateness of their use of going concern assumption is an
important matter considered by every auditing firm. Several financial reporting frameworks has a
clear requirement asking the management to create specific assessment of the entity s capability to
continue with their operations and as a going concern. Furthermore, the management is also required
to assess specific standards and disclosure to be made in relation with going concern. One specific
example is within IFRS or the International Financial Reporting Standards, and IAS or International
Accounting Standards. Below is the Presentation of Financial Statements or AASB 101 26:
In assessing whether the going concern assumption is appropriate, management takes into account all
available information about the future, which is at least, but is not limited to, twelve months from the
balance sheet date. The degree of consideration depends on the facts in each case. When an entity has
a history of profitable operations and ready access to financial resources, a conclusion that the going
concern basis of accounting is appropriate may be reached without detailed analysis. In other cases,
management may need to consider a wide range of factors relating to current and expected
profitability, debt repayment schedules and potential

  • 2. Philosophy of Behaviorism Philosophy of Behaviorism Tammie Williams Columbia College Abstract For hundreds of years there has been a fascination on how humans behave and how humans learn. This has been observed and studied by psychologists, educators, and scientists by means of humans and animals and how they perform in different environments. This fascination is known as behaviorism. This aspect of behaviorism deals with how a humans or animals respond to a certain stimuli and how a new behavior is then developed. This paper will address the philosophy of behaviorism, the great contributors to behaviorism and their aspects of behavioral learning such as classical conditioning and operant conditioning. Philosophy of Behaviorism The evolution of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Psychoanalysis is a school of thought that was founded by Sigmund Freud. This theory focuses on that behavior is influenced by the unconscious mind. Freud felt that the human mind was made up of three elements which include the id, the ego, and the superego. Eric Erikson, Carl Jung, and Anna Freud were also psychoanalysis thinkers. Humanistic psychology was developed as a response to behaviorism and psychoanalysis. Individual free will, self actualization and personal growth were focused on by humanistic psychology. Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow were amongst the major humanistic psychology thinkers. Gestalt psychology is based upon that people experience things as unified wholes. This approach started in the late 19th century in Austria and Germany. This approach was a response to molecular approach of structuralism (Cherry, 2005). Gestalt psychologists felt things must be looked at as a whole rather than breaking the thought down. They believed that a whole is more than just the sum of its parts. Cognitive psychology is a school of thought which studies the mental process including how we remember, think, perceive, and learn. Philosophy, neuroscience, and linguistics are disciplines that are related to this branch of psychology. The stages of cognitive development theory by Jean Piaget were amongst the most influential theories from cognitive psychology. • 3. Too Much Punch For Judy Play Analysis The play that we read for this unit is Too Much Punch For Judy, by Mark Wheeller. It is a form of Verbatim Theatre, which means the play is based on the spoken words of real people. This play is about the story of a young woman who kills her sister in an alcohol related accident. When I first read the play I couldn t empathize with the story as I have never encountered such a shocking event in my life. In this essay I will describe, analyse and evaluate both my work and the work of other actors in my group, focusing on the mediums, elements and explorative strategies of Drama. In Hour One, we explored the play by using two explorative strategies, which are still image and thought tracking. Task One was to create four still images that showed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We were first tasked to create a sound piece in groups of 6 depicting what happened from when Jo and Judy left the bar up to the accident. There was a moment after the opening when Jo and Judy were reversing, an impression created through Actor 1 s beep sound effect. The beeping got faster continuously, and Actor 2 (Jo) shouted Judy slow down a bit! before they started to laugh. The beeping that gradually got faster suggested that the car was going to crash into something, before their laughter breaks the tension and gives the scene an anti climax. This suggests that they are in a drunken state, because people would not usually be laughing at the prospect of crashing their car. This also efficaciously foreshadows the tragic accident that occurs later. To further build up the tension, Actor 1 could have walked towards the audience as he performed the sound effect to suggest that the car was crashing into them. For Task Two we were required to add movement to the piece. A section near the end portrayed the accident as it happened. Actors 2 and 3(Judy) were sat on blocks behind two tables, symbolizing the front of the car. Actor 1 and I crouched on either side of the tables wearing white masks and right after Actor 3 shouted Judy slow down a bit! , we flipped the tables violently to the side and stood straight up. The purpose of the white mask was to hide our identity, creating a mysterious ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With this technology we can literally say that you are limited by your imagination. While the printing technology is awesome, it comes with its fair share of negatives. Here are 4 common 3D printing problems and how to fix them: Warping Warping is when one or more corners of your printing machine lift up until the base of the model is no longer at level with the print platform. This results to horizontal cracks in the upper parts of your machine. The problem comes about when the plastic of the first layers of your machine cool down thus start shrinking. One of the most effective ways is using rafts which give the print a larger surface area at the base. Stringing If you have been using your printing machine for long you must have come across this problem. Stringing happens when you have tiny little hairs between the gaps of your print. The problem results when some filament drips from the nozzle when the print moves over an open part. Stringing is a problem that fixable. One of the ways of fixing it is enabling retraction. Retraction is a feature on your printing software. When you enable retraction the printer retracts the filament in the nozzle before the travel moves. This ensures that no surplus plastic drips from the nozzle thus producing strings. Cracks Cracks are common on tall, thin models. The cracks and gaps are found in the sides of the model. The cool thing with the problem is that it s easy to fix. One of the things that you need to do is increase the extruder temperature in 10 degree increments. If this trick doesn t work increase the bed temperature by 5 15 degrees.

  • 7. Machiavelli s The Prince The Renaissance represented a new era in which values such as secularism and power became prevalent in society. Machiavelli expresses the need for politics and religion to be separated throughout his book The Prince . Previously rulers had been restricted by Christian principals, but Machiavelli held the idea that rulers were warranted in any action so as long as it benefited the general public. Machiavelli believed that politics existed outside the realm of religion and morals. Subsequently, he approved of using any means necessary to gain and keep power, including lying, stealing, and murder. During this time Italy s city states were in political chaos and condottieri roamed the streets. Machiavelli thought it was the ruler s duty to maintain discipline and peace in society at any cost. Despite his intentions to help Italy, Machiavelli s ideas were often seen as immoral and dishonest. The idea of a purely political action where morals were set aside is later referred to as the Reasons of the state . In addition, Machiavelli felt a ruler must be sly ... • 10. Summary Of Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven The long and often dark history between the white man and their co inhabitants, the Native Americans has been recognized on a global stage since the very first interaction between the two groups. Although several hundred years has passed and the two populations may not be chasing one another down on horseback, a fruitful relationship still does not exist. This poor relationship is a focal point of Sherman Alexie, a Spokane tribe member, in his story, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. Through the interactions and events of his Native American character, Victor, Alexie shows the isolation of Native Americans due to this tension that underlies the relationship between Native Americans and mainstream American society. America as a country praises the concepts of equality and unification, which are at the roots of the constitution. However, from the very beginning of Alexie s story the reader is submerged into the tension ridden relationship between Native Americans and the white American when Victor, who is a Native American living in Seattle after leaving his reservation, enters the 7 11 late at night. As soon as victor enters the store he can tell that the clerk, who is white, becomes nervous due to his dark skin (80). Although the clerk never directly states that the presence of Victor made him uneasy and fearful of a crime being committed, his body language, which Victor could read, was all that was needed to fabricate a division between the two. In the 1954 book, Stolen Legacy, George James, a Guyanese historian and author, argued that the highly acclaimed Greek philosophy actually originated in ancient Egypt. James arguments on Ancient Egypt being the basis of Greek philosophy will be discussed as it relates to the goals of Egyptian theory of salvation and Egyptian Mystery system. The Stolen Legacy begins with uncovering how the Egyptian s held a Mystery System, which was the oldest in the world considered a Secret Order that required membership and pledged secrecy. Thus the Egyptians developed secret systems of writing and teaching that if forbade others from imitating their work. It was not until the Greeks were allowed into the temples that the invasion of Alexander the Destructor plundered the temples and libraries and allowed the Greeks to gain access to the ancient books. James further explains that this is where Aristotle built his school of thought and legacy. In essence, this explanation is the basis of James view. The education of Egyptian priests and the legacy of the Mystery System show that Egypt was the source of higher education in the ancient world, futhermore, key Ionian and Italian philosophers such as Pythagoras, Thales, Democritus had obtained their education from Egyptian priests despite their acclaim as being the greatest philosophers to date. • 12. ##riesel s Speech In The Perils Of Indifference By Eliie... American Jewish author and Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel in his critical speech, The Perils of Indifference, suggests his message about the inhumanity of indifference and how the importance of resistance is still relevant today. He develops his message by emphasizing how indifference is not only dangerous, but is the most evil characteristic of our society today. For example, Wiesel states in paragraph 13, Indifference, then, is not only a sin, it is a punishment. These truthful words assist in understanding the author s emphasis on indifference and its danger in our world; to add on, Wiesel also uses rhetorical questions throughout the text to highlight powerful and important users of indifference during the time period which he lived in. A question from the speech in paragraph 20 is, Why the indifference, on the highest level, to the suffering of the victims? This line in the text exemplifies his belief that indifference is human nature if we do not rid ourselves of it. In brief, the author explains how indifference is tempting in society because of the degree of effort one puts into being indifferent, which is little to none. Wiesel s purpose is to inform the readers why indifference is inhumane and to create awareness of indifference in order to persuade those readers not to be indifferent to others. He establishes both serious and thankful tones for readers by using stylistic and/or rhetorical device such as repetition and imagery in order to develop his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. The Most Convincing Justification for Private Property The most convincing justification for private property provided by Ziff is that of economic efficiency. Private property incentivises innovation, lowers the cost of dealing with externalities, and with moderation, reduces the susceptibility of property to the tragedy of the commons. Economic efficiency holds particular weight because of the significant amount of today s societies that rely on a market based system to conduct business, trade and commerce. This system lists private property as one of its founding tenets and therefore heightens the justification s persuasiveness. It is not suggested that a fully privatised property regime would be ideal either, but a mixture of both private property and communal property is seen as the best ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To the contrary Ziff argues that the cost of policing would also be more expensive under a private property regime as the creation of boundaries would add costs that would not have otherwise have existed. Conversely Grafton suggests that the cost of boundary erection is merely temporary, as after the initial set up of boundaries, cost of negotiations and policing are comparatively reduced. Communal property rights contrast this; as they hold long term economic costs to the interest owners as negotiation costs will continue to increase exponentially, as policing costs are not one off, and negotiation costs are comparatively higher . It is therefore evident that private property provides the most economically efficient method of dealing with externalities in the short run and the long run, as costs and reaction time are rapidly reduced. Ziff also argues that the over distribution of private property may result in myopic view of externalities, as each land owner would only care for their own property and not about the needs of the wider community affected by externalities created by their land. This short term view, is an inherent downfall of private property, but society has developed means and ways in which these costs can be met, for example through regulatory authorities, and it is therefore argued that a fully privatise property regime would not be preferable but a partly common and partly private alternative, as ... • 15. The World s First Short Message Service On December 3, 1992, the world s first short message service, or SMS, was sent. Neil Papworth, a 22 year old communications engineer from the United Kingdom sent the simple message Merry Christmas, to a friend via PC (Gayomali, 2012). Like almost all new technologies, the initial reception of the SMS was slow. In 1995, two years after Nokia released the first ever texting phone, the average American user sent just 0.4 texts per month (Gayomali and Erickson, 2012). Almost 22 years later, six billion SMS messages are sent every day in the United States (Kelly, 2012). Text messaging is one of the most widely used data applications in the world, as 81% of cellphone users have texting as an option on their phones (Erickson, 2012). As its popularity has continued to grow at an exponential rate, it more frequently raises the question of whether or not the act of text messaging has ruined the art of conversation. Texting has many advantages. For one, the recipient of a text does not have to be present to receive a message. Currently, the majority of text messages are sent to individuals for personal reasons (Faulkner, 2012). Though it is not face to face communication, texting is used as a one to one method of communication between friends, particularly teenagers (Faulkner, 2012). Long distance relationships, friendships and various other connections have become possible due to the fact that people can communicate on a constant basis despite being apart. Texting has ... • 16. African Slaves In The Novel Saltwater Slavery By Smallwood The Natchez District where a tribe of Indians were housed as slaves was the first Mississippi region where plantations were established. There African slaves were introduced into the Natchez plantation system in the early 1700s by the French colonists where the first major profitable crop that thrived from African slave labor in Natchez was tobacco products. The slaves shipped here came with a militant spirit after being harbored amongst the torturous vessels. Their aggression, at first took the form of resistance on slave ships as many deckhands and captive slaves experienced the unforgiving waters, this is again explained in the novel Saltwater Slavery written by Smallwood. One of the earliest recorded incidents of a slave resistance was the Natchez Indian Revolt of 1729 against the French colonists. The African arrival in Natchez did not quell this militancy. Instead it caused the Natchez to increase their aggression. However, the French quickly recognized the preceding contact and interaction between the slaves and the Natchez Indians and as a counter they, (the French) eventually extended their cruelty to the Indians. The Natchez Indians became aware that the French began to whip young Indian boys just as they did their African slaves, along with the French commander at Fort Rosalie taking the Natchez land, encouraged the Natchez nobles to act in retaliation. • 18. Racism In Racism Racism has always been a problem with this country, but lately people are starting to express themselves and their ethnicity. Football is a big deal to this country because it is our sport. NFL players are speaking out, well actually they are standing out to show America that they are not okay with how they are being treated. When a national figure such as an NFL player refuses to stand for the national anthem, it shocks people into paying attention and generates conversation. Three reasons why athletes should kneel down for the national anthem are they should protest to show their concerns, it s not an official rule, and NFL players should have a right of freedom. First, athletes should protest their concerns. For example, Kaepernick kneeling was to bring attention to police brutality against African Americans. According to Autumn Allison, the author of Why do NFL players protest during national anthem? A timeline: From Kaepernick to Trump there have been significant words used disrespectfully. Trump made an extremely decisive statement about the players who kneel, calling them an unnecessary word and that they should get fired. In addition, Trump said that kneeling has nothing to do with race, but it actually does from the injustice in the country. Many players protest because they are not being treated fairly, so they re expressing their feelings. Secondly It s not an official rule for NFL players to stand during the national anthem. For example The Seattle Seahawks said as a team Out of love for our country and in honor of the sacrifices made on our behalf, we unite to oppose those that would deny our most basic freedoms. According to Anthem kneeling isn t aimed at veterans, and other NFL protest misconceptions by Josh Hafner, it is stated that kneeling down is not just respect for the country but Colin Kaepernick said I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. In addition, Smith and Carlos (two NFL players) raised their fists in the air to protest against social injustice, racism, and discrimination during a time of high tension in the United States. • 20. The Brown V. Board Of Education Essay The Brown v. Board of Education was a case that was initiated by members of the local NAACP (National association Advancement of Colored People) organization in Topeka, Kansas where thirteen parents volunteered to participate of the segregation during school. Parents took their children to schools in their neighborhoods in the summer of 1950 and attempted to enroll them for the upcoming school year. All students were refused admission and were forced to attend one of the four schools in the city for African Americans. For most parents and students, this involved traveling some distance from their homes. These parents filed suit against the Topeka Board of Education on behalf of their twenty children. Oliver Brown who was a minister, was the first parent to suit against the problem, so the case came to be named after his last name. Three local lawyers, Charles Bledsoe, Charles Scott and John Scott, were assisted by Robert Carter and Jack Greenberg from the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Oliver Brown had declared that Topeka s racial segregation violated the Constitution s Equal Protection Clause because the city s black and white schools were not equal to each other and never could be due to the way things were. The federal district court dismissed his claim, ruling that the segregated public schools were substantially equal enough to be constitutional under the Plessy case doctrine. The setting of this story is not clearly disclosed but from the author s choice of words like the use of juju , traveling from bushes to bushes and native blacksmiths , there is a clear depiction of a typical African village setting. Some carers may be short on time and therefore want to spend time with their child rather than talking about them. This needs to be dealt with sensitively as carers may feel guilty that they can t do as much as they would like. There are many ways to overcome this. One of these is using home link books. • 38. Wide Sargasso Sea Analysis In Wide Sargasso Sea, by Jean Rhys, culture causes belonging as well as insecurity. In this novel, characters from the Caribbean and England are put side by side to highlight how strong cultures affect those without one. Christophine and R hold strong ties to their identities through their ethnic background, while Antionette is left wondering, who I am and where is my country and where do I belong (61). Rhys uses the binary opposition of these two contrasting characters to convey that people rely on their cultures for their identity and because of this, those who do not fit into a certain group have trouble defining themselves. Christophine, a former slave and servant to Antionette s family, relies on her Afro Caribbean roots to dictate her beliefs and shape her as a person. When Antionette wants Christophine to help her using obeah, Christophine tells Antionette that obeah is not for béké , using the word béké, a slang term for a white person (68). Through this, Christophine separates herself from Antionette and defines herself through her ethnic background. Although she is very close to Antionette, Christophine clearly identifies with a different culture and therefore there is a distance between them that cannot be removed. This culture is one that she identifies so strongly with that she will risk being caught and thrown in jail for her beliefs. It is revealed by Daniel Cosway that Christophine was put in jail for practicing obeah but she continues to practice this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. In Defense Of Bottled Water By Thomas J. Lauria Bottled Water Versus Cost According to The Water Project, Bottles used to package water take over 1,000 years to bio degrade and if incinerated, they produce toxic fumes. It is estimated that over 80% of all single use water bottles used in the U.S. simply become litter ( Bottled Water is Wasteful ). This fact is not the only reason I believe that bottled water does not outweigh its costs. Although statistics show that bottled water is efficient, there are many reasons to believe otherwise. As aforementioned, there are explanations to believe that bottled water does outweigh its repercussions. Thomas J. Lauria, author of In Defense of Bottled Water , states, Bottled water provides a healthy choice when tap water is not accessible ( In Defense of Bottled Water ). In this article, Lauria states that bottled water is a topic of great interest. He goes on to discuss that in the United States, Adults consume 450 calories a day from beverages and sixty eight percent of those twenty years old and older are classified as overweight or obese, bottled water provides a healthy choice when tap water is not accessible, preferred, or convenient ( In Defense of Bottled Water ). Sure, this is fact and definitely a benefit to bottled water. Lauria continues to say that if bottled water is not offered then people will be more likely to choose soda, juices, or options similar to those. • 40. Essay on Deception Deception According to Hyman (1989) deception implies that an agent acts or speaks so as to induce a false belief in a target or victim. Deception can occur in everyday life. Whether it is telling someone they look nice or not telling them that they look fat. This is an important process for forming relationships and general social interaction. However, although this is useful for social interaction, it is a serious problem in other areas. Deception can be a problem when people actively deceive in job applications, giving evidence and in court. Being able to detect whether a person is lying or ... A recent study by Mann, Vrij and Bull (2004) showed that when shown videotapes of real life lies and truths and found that the officers had an accuracy of 65%. This was found to be better than lab studies using, normal (non trained) participants. Additionally, accuracy was negatively correlated with popular stereotypical cues such as gaze aversion and fidgeting. However, although this suggests that human lie detection is fairly accurate, earlier research has found the opposite. According to Wallace (1999), psychological research on deception shows that most of us are poor judges of truthfulness. One may assume that this only applies to only ordinary people and not professionals. However further research shows that this applies to professionals such as police and custom inspectors, whose jobs are supposed to include some expertise at lie detection (Wallace, 1999). An early study by Kraut and Poe (1980) that custom inspectors showed accuracy scores rarely exceed 65% where 50% is the chance level. A later study by Kohnken (1987) showed that police officers performed no better than chance when judging the truthfulness of witness statements (on video). Furthermore, it was found that the more confident the officer was of their judgement, the more likely they were wrong. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. Rio Host Impacts Essay Name Prof. Class Date Title Every four years the world goes into a clamor for the Olympic Games, and cities aggressively bid for the right to host these events. Cities literally fight for the right to hold these games and spend exorbitant amounts of money in the hopes of bringing the worlds Olympiad s to their municipality. But, is the prestige of being the host worth it for the host city? It is becoming more apparent that these endeavors are detrimental to the economy, if you look at the five most recent summer Olympics; Rio de Janeiro, London, Beijing, Athens, and Sydney. Many of these cities apply with the hopes of a positive long term impact, many in recent times to be severely disappointed. Rio won it s Olympic bid in 2009, after several years of solid GDP growth and was one of the most dynamic emerging economies at the time. The summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro were plagued by controversy even before the games started, with concerns over the outbreak of the Zika virus as well as the concerns about the water in the area (Rapoza). After Brazil announced that it would host the 2016 Olympics it has invested twelve billion dollars in infrastructure alone between 2009 2015, something that had to be developed to support the influx of tourists and athletes (Rapoza). This investment in the infrastructure and public spending increased the debt of Rio by 17%, and the state received a bailout from the government in June. In the investment phase there was ... • 46. Computer Field And Technical Education Programs The lack of qualified employees in computer and technology fields is a perplexing issue for the United States as it strives to stay competitive in a global economy. According to an article by the Bureau of National Affairs, two of the top three toughest jobs to fill are technology related (Bureau of National Affairs, 2012, p. 6). Although there are many theories as to why more students are not choosing to major in some type of computer field, resolutions to this problem are slow in developing. Could a solution be emerging from career and technical education programs? In 2012 Microsoft Corporation sponsored a study that estimated the U.S. creates 120,000 new computer science jobs each year. Colleges and universities, however, are only graduating 49,000 students per year with degrees to fill those positions. This gap has companies scrambling to find qualified personnel and many are turning to foreign workers using the H1 B Visa program (Beach, 2013, p. 3). With 7.9 million Americans unemployed, this is not a popular choice and creates a potential image problem for companies (United States Department of Labor, 2015). Once considered a dumping ground for students who could not handle a typical high school curriculum, career and technical education has progressed over the last 30 years. • 47. The Debate Of The Drinking Age The drinking age has always been twenty one in the United States, whenever it has been questioned on why twenty one and not eighteen. The scientific answer has always been because the eighteen year old brain is not fully developed yet. See what I have a hard time understanding is why eighteen year olds are considered adults at the age of eighteen, but we can t have a drink. At eighteen you are allowed to buy cigarettes, join the army, change your name. I just don t understand why at eighteen you are considered old enough to fight for the country, but you can t just have a drink. I also do not quite understand why we haven t moved the age of becoming a legal adult to twenty one. Back in 1984 the government wanted to get a firm grasp on the country and wanted to knock them into line. So they made a deal with all the states that simply stated. Either make the minimum drinking age twenty one or lose up to 10% of the federal highway funding. Now that s some serious cash, so of course all the states went along with it and that is how the minimum drinking age came into play. The federal government did not just pick the number twenty one out of a hat. Twenty one came from the early English century. That was the age you could vote or become a knight back in that day. Since they became an adult then it only makes sense that they can drink. ( Why Is the Drinking Age 21? ). Waimea is Hawaiian for reddish water , a reference to the erosion of the canyon s red soil.[1] The canyon was formed by a deep incision of the Waimea River arising from the extreme rainfall on the island s central peak, Mount Waiʻaleʻale, among the wettest places on earth. Geologically the canyon is carved into the tholeiitic and post shield calc alkaline lavas of the canyon basalt. • 50. How Do Specific Enzymes Affect The Reaction Rate Of Reaction Introduction Specific enzymes made up of proteins are used in biology to speed up a chemical reaction of any kind. Since a spontaneous chemical reaction can occur without help from any outside energy it could potentially prolong the reaction to where it becomes almost unnoticeable since it can take years for it to happen. For this reason, enzymes take action as a catalyst that speed up the reaction rate without completely being absorbed (Campbell et al., 2010). Enzymes are a form of regulation that allow for a through pathway in chemical reactions. It is able to perform as a catalyst by lowering the activation energy which is the energy required to drive the reactant to the top of the energy barrier allowing the downhill part to begin. An ...
