Patriot Act Essay
The Patriot Act
In the wake of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Congress sprang into action. Within a
month, U.S. lawmakers overwhelmingly approved the USA Patriot Act of 2001, giving law
enforcement and intelligence agent s broader authority to fight terrorists operating in the United
States.
Signed into law by the President on October 26, the Patriot Act is designed to fight terrorism on
several fronts. First, it gives the U.S. government authority to hold foreigners suspected of terrorist
activity for up to seven days before charging them with a crime. The legislation also gives
investigators the legal right to tap any phone a suspected terrorist might use. ... Show more content on

the titles of books an individual has purchased or borrowed or the identity of individuals who have
purchased or borrowed certain books. The Patriot Act authorizes the use of devices to trace the
telephone calls or e mails of people who are not suspected of any crime. American citizens and
permanent legal residents investigated and sought information on the basis of activities protected by
the First Amendment.
The Patriot Act allows investigators to use the tools that were already available to investigate
organized crime and drug trafficking. Many of the tools the Act provides to law enforcement to fight
terrorism have been used for decades to fight organized crime and drug dealers, and have been
reviewed and approved by the courts.
This Act allows law enforcement to use surveillance against more crimes of terror. Before the Patriot
Act, courts could permit law enforcement to conduct electronic surveillance to investigate many
ordinary, non terrorism crimes, such as drug crimes, mail fraud, and passport fraud. Agents also could
obtain wiretaps to investigate some, but not all, of the crimes that terrorists often commit. The Act
enabled investigators to gather information when looking into the full range of terrorism related
crimes, including: chemical weapons offenses, the use of weapons of mass destruction, killing
Americans abroad, and terrorism

The Building And Its Environment

Architecture is the study of the building and its environment, and it aims to summarize the experience
of human construction activities in order to guide the creation of architectural design, construct some

Five Guys Burgers and Fries
Five Guys Burgers and Fries: Ingredients for Success
Dr. Etido Apkan
BUS 508: Contemporary Business
July 22, 2012
In 1986 when the two oldest sons of Jerry and Janie Murrell decided not to attend college, they made a
decision that ultimately changed their family s lives forever. As supportive parents, the Murrell s used
the money intended for their tuition to open a hamburger take out shop in Arlington, Virginia to keep
the boys close to home and employed (Boone and Kurtz, 2012, p. 78). The restaurant was named Five
Guys and a Burger, after their family of five sons. With hard work and dedication, Five Guys has

An oligopoly is a market situation in which relatively few sellers [like Burger King, McDonald s]
compete and high start up costs form barriers to keep out new competitors [like Five Guys Burgers
and Fries] (Boone and Kurtz, 2012, p. 80). Within this competitive fast food burger industry, the main
product being offered is a hamburger.
However, one of Five Guys unique features compared to Burger King and McDonald s is to only offer
fresh, never frozen, eighty percent lean meat burgers that are made to order. Many of the traditional
fast food burger restaurants, only offer frozen patties cooked in advanced, and stored under heated
lamp until ordered by the customers. They also offer the customers seventeen free toppings for their
burgers. Additionally, they use the same kind of bun for the burgers; as well as the original baker.
Subsequently, Five Guys does not sell dehydrated French Fries unlike its competitors. Their potatoes
are slowly grown in Northern Idaho, where the weather conditions are quite favorable for growing
solid and tasty potatoes. Many of the competitors reduce their costs by purchasing potatoes from
California or Florida, where they are grown fast and are a lot cheaper. Five Guys guarantees freshness
by cutting the potatoes every morning while leaving slivers of skin on.

George Orwell Shooting An Elephant
The essay Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell examines the truths behind British imperialism and
colonialism by following the life of a British soldier stationed in Burma in the 1920s. The essay
describes a situation where the Burmese people pressure a young soldier to take action and go against
his own desires by exterminating an elephant that had previously raided and destroyed parts of a
village and killed one of the Burmese. The soldier also describes his feelings of distaste towards the
work that was being done in Burma. This event is when the soldier begins to realize that he is a puppet
being played by both the British and the Burmese to do their dwelling. British imperialism is proved
to be evil, resulting in the personal gain of the British ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During this time, Burma was exploited for its natural resources and served as a trading post between
China and Britain as it was accessible by boat through the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea.
Throughout this time of British imperialism the Burmese natives were heavily oppressed by British
powers. European sports such as soccer and other cultural values made their way into the daily life of
the Burmese. These people were also forced to live in poverty, and prisoners were kept in filthy cage
like structures in close quarters with one another and showed evidence of being beaten. Due to the
circumstances, the Burmese despised the British and never let an opportunity to humiliate a soldier go
to waste, whether that entailed glaring, tripping, or spitting on an Englishman. Not only was hatred
towards the work of the British Empire from the Burmese evident, but it can also be seen from some
of the British soldiers who were able to see the dirty work up close. Although the young soldier in

Symptoms And Treatment Of A Thyroid Nodule Essay
Introduction
A thyroid nodule is a discrete lesion within the thyroid gland that is distinguishable from the adjacent
parenchyma. Sonographic examination of enlarged nodular thyroids, demonstrated that 66% had
multiple nodules, whereas 34% had single nodules. Among these single nodules, 85% 90% were
proved to be benign. Adenomatous nodules represent most of benign thyroid nodules (80%), whereas
the remaining benign nodules consisted of adenoma, cyst, and focal thyroiditis (1).
The differentiation of single benign nodule and malignant one is considered an important goal. Early
diagnosis of thyroid cancer avoids unneeded surgery in those complaining of benign nodules and
decreases both mortality and morbidity rates of the disease (2). Although both fine needle aspiration
cytology (FNAC) and ultrasound are considered to be the most important tools in thyroid nodules
evaluation, uncertain diagnosis of the nodule even by experienced hands still remains a problem and
sometimes surgery has to be done for precise diagnosis. The percentage of indeterminate nodules
might be small, however a significant number of patients performed surgery for benign disease (3);
thus there is a need for a new noninvasive presurgical diagnostic test to avoid unnecessary surgery (4).
Routine T1 and T2 weighted MR imaging cannot differentiate benign from malignant nodules or
assess the functional status of thyroid nodules, thus its role in thyroid nodules evaluation is limited (5).

Griots were an essential part to Mali history as they both performed and preserved Mali past through

Oral history is the recording, preservation, and interpretation of historical information (What). The key
word is this definition is interpretation, while oral history can state events and people from past
generations it is more the personal experiences and opinions of the person telling it. Like many other
forms of sources, it does not always state straight facts. Numerous stories in the form of oral history
can be folktales which is a tale passed down from a group of people, these tales are usually based on
superstition (Written). Instead of paper being passed down through generations in a book, oral history
is passed mouth by mouth (What). A good analogy for this way of conveying stories is the game
whisper down the lane . While a the general idea of the words or story can reach the end, or the
present generation, words can be changed, and so can the truth of the story. It is not, however, only
oral history which may not be completely accurate, all documents of past stories add personal
viewpoints and adjusted storylines. A book like Sundiata may not be one hundred percent accurate to
the reality of its time, but it is useful

The Discovery And Observation Of The Cosmic Microwave...
The Discovery and Observation of the Cosmic Microwave Background: Implications for Cosmology
On a spring day in late May in 1964, the future of our understanding of the universe was greatly
influenced, arguable on accident. Two radio astronomers discovered something unusual, not with their
eyes, but with their ears. Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson essentially heard the buzz that the universe
was echoing into their headphones, but they could not wrap their head around what it was. The two
scientists were bewildered by the odd humming sound that was picked up by their labs horn antenna
and they had no idea the significance of what they were listening to. They thought it must have been
some sort of interference from a secondary source in or around their lab and antenna. They did
everything in their power to eliminate anything that could possibly interfere with the radio signals that
they were receiving; they went as far as getting rid of pigeons that had their nest on top of the
astronomer s antenna. It was not until they successfully got rid of anything that could potentially
explain this noise that they came to the exciting conclusion that what they stumbled upon must be big.
With this knowledge in mind, the idea that something big was at their fingertips, they had a few
questions on their mind that needed answering. First and foremost, they obviously wanted and needed
to figure out what exactly the noise they were hearing was. Secondly, they wanted to know what

Analysis Of The Film Prey
I believe the film Prey should be allowed to be broadcasted on television. The movie is about a small
family, who travels to Africa so the father can continue his career as a hydro electrical engineer and
build a dam. Ultimately, the father s two children are forced to go on a safari with only their
stepmother. Tensions are high between the teenage daughter and her stepmother, due to the father s
divorce from her biological mother. During this safari, the ranger decides to take the family
offroading. Soonly after, the son has to use the bathroom, and the ranger takes him outside. As this
scene takes place, a lion jumps out of the grass and murders the ranger. The son escapes back to the
ranger s vehicle, where the family waits for days as lions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both the ranger, native hunter, and the big game hunter are mauled visibly. As this terror happens,
very fake blood squirts all over the screen, but there isn t any gruesome body pictures shown until
scavengers have made the human unrecognizable. The camera often cuts away from the attack, before
any horrific images cover the screen. It gives the audience the message of a traumatizing attack,
without showing how bad it really is. The context of the movie is about survival, not murder. It depicts
how dangerous nature can be, especially in a place like Africa. Until there is accurate research
regarding violent program s effects on people, I don t believe something shouldn t be broadcasted
unless it is immensely inappropriate or inhumane. Our textbook, even explains that violent behavior
blamed on the media, can often be tied to other variables and not just a specific program on television
or radio. Overall, Prey isn t any more outrageous or controversial than any other type of movie
broadcasted. It has violence, but a majority of mature movies do these days. It wouldn t be fair for me
to deny this movie, when the message it portrays is realistic and not shoved down the audience s

The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari
The Cabinet of Dr.Caligari, directed by Robert Wiene first made its appearance in 1920. The film is
considered one of the most defining German expressionist film out of the Avant garde cinema
movement. The film became a template for future films that is horror based and also influenced the
film style of film noirs with its lighting. With its gothic tone that pays homage to expressionistic
paintings that depicts human emotions, the film shows us a place that is distorted and twisted through
the narration of the film s deranged character. I will explore how the film show us the various stylistic
elements that is associated with expressionist films and how this helped to create the distorted looking
world through the vision of a madman.
After the Germans loses in World War I, the American government was in control of the art of
expressionism that is occurring in Germany at the same time. Reality for them was intolerable and
therefore to escape this insufferable reality, they turned to arts. This reality was the fact that after their
loss, they were traumatised by it and could not fathom the fact of their economic depression, the
colonising of American culture and their politics. They used this arts to express their inner feelings
and that is why German expressionism is associated with the human emotions.
The film tells the story of the crazy hypnotist Dr.Caligari through the narration of Francis. Francis and
his friend Alan, meets Caligari at a carnival in their town. Part

Come let s get back to our hotel as I need you more than anything else. I could see she knew
something was not right, but for the moment she saw I needed her. That night I held her so much she
was worrying, and I had to force myself to let her go. The morning came with rain so I asked if it
would be all right if we left and went over to France as I wanted to show her the Eifel Tower. Then the
feeling came on me again as I sat down and let it wash over me. All Lie Lyn could do was hold me as I
just sat and stared into space.
My mind was awash with fantastic light displays that only I can see, then she was there beside me and
I felt her love wash over me. This helped me gain control of my mind and she led me back to reality.
We sat there for hours as I tried to keep my mind at bay as it wanted control.
Your powers are getting stronger and soon you will struggle to keep control. You must use all the
controls you have learned to keep what is happening in your mind held. If you can keep control you ll
get stronger and be able to over rule your subconscious. That s what s causing the confusion you re

Achieving Conservation Goals With Urbanizing Landscapes
Synopsis: Achieving Conservation goals with Urbanizing Landscapes
Goal of the Study: To help Conservation biology realize that they need to embrace urbanizing
ecosystems; to consider designing a protected area of network in NJ highlands; to apply the costs of
obtaining land and integrating this land into a protected urban area and to observe the performance of
a long stand preserved urban area in central university in terms of its biodiversity protection.
Rationale: Urban areas should not be ignored because they hold a surprisingly high number of native
species, some of which are very much of conservation concern. At time conservation biologist think

In 1996 to 2004, State0wide voters accepted a budget of $11.4 billion dollars to fund many urban land
conservation projects. During this vote, New Jersey accounted for over 75% of this funding. Major
motivations include preserving local biodiversity in an urbanizing environment and protecting
important populations or rare species. Professor Lockwood realized that 17 species found in the area
were rapidly declining, such as Least flycatcher, field sparrow and cerulean warbler. Professor
Lockwood made it her goal to find an urban area that would allow these bird species to thrive, and
affordable cost of acquiring the land.
Methods: Professor Lockwood used distribution maps from MAxent software for each of the 17
species of birds and then overlaid these distribution maps unto the maps of land use/land cover in the
study region. In order to build a protected areas network in the New Jersey highlands that will provide
sufficient habitat for the 17 species, Professor Lockwood used an optimization algorithm.
Optimization algorithm often used in evolution studies and industrial. These are very well developed
for many situations in which the goal needs to be met at minimum costs. In this situation, the
Algorithm would search through the red dots of the species, looking to include those that satisfy
habitat needs for birds while minimizing the costs, such as

Cell Network Operators And Mobile Network Operator
1 SMALL CELL BACKHAUL: Small cell backhaul connects small cells with mobile network
operator. As mobile network operators begin to deploy growing numbers of small cells in order to
meet the rapidly increasing demand for mobile data capacity, and to utilize the maximum spectrum we
use backhaul. The major challenge facing them is how to provide efficient and cost effective backhaul
solution. 2 BACKHAUL REQUIREMENT: For designing this backhaul one should consider the type
of environment, transmission technique, topology and motivation for deployment of small cell. There
are different topology like star, tree, ring and mesh topology which is implemented among the small
cell to the backhaul. Transmission technologies followed in backhaul solutions are Point to Point
microwave, Point to Multipoint microwave, Leased lines, xDSL (e.g. VDSL2), Point to Point Fiber
,PLC(Power Line Communication) and WiMAX. 3 TYPES OF BACKHAUL: 3.1WIRED
BACKHAUL: Wired backhaul solutions have played a key role in mobile base station backhaul over
the years due to their high performance, better reliability, scalability, high data rates and high
availability. Wired backhaul solutions helps small cell by working with new site types, likes
streetlamps, rooftop and wall mounts. It should be able to meet lower cost than those associated with
macro cell backhaul. The overall backhaul solution may be the combination of both wired and
wireless, with the wired solution linking to wireless hub sites.

A Literary Analysis Of The Jaunt By Stephen King
The Jaunt The jaunt by Stephen King is a science fiction short story. It was first published in The
Twilight Zone Magazine in 1981 . The story takes place early in the 24th century, when the
technology for teleportation, also called Jaunting is allowing for transportation across enormous
distances, even to other planets in the solar system, and that is what the Jaunt is about. The story
contains two parallel running storylines. One that is written in the present and one that is written in the
past. The first storyline is the father Mark Oates, who is telling his family a story about the Jaunt, and
how it was invented. This storyline is written in the present. The other storyline is where, we are

In this text there is no Antagonist, because there is not any bad guy. The minor characters are Mark s
family. They are less important characters, but they still play an important part in the meaning of the
story. The text consists of a dialogue between Mark Oates and his two kids Ricky and Patricia. Mark is
telling them how the Jaunt is working. He is trying to explain, how the scientist Victor Carune
discovered, that you must be a sleep, when you are being transported, after he had tested it on mice. If
you are a wake, the jaunting will then feel longer than the 0,067 seconds, it normally takes, when you
are jaunting , but Mark forgot to tell, what s really going to happen to you. This dialogue is important
to understand to get the point of the story, because in most of the text Mark is speaking to his family.
Human VS Technology is the theme in the text. Mark s son Ricky was awake, when the family was
going through the Jaunt, which resulted in the fact that he got crazy and acted strange, like the mice
Victor Carune used to test the Jaunt with. Ricky wanted to see the travel to Mars, so he challenged the
technology, though he knew, it was dangerous and lost . Also because the whole story is about people
and technology, and if those two things are mixed, then incredible thinks can happen like the

Theme Of Animals In 1984
The animals of Orwell s novels often represent a much less clear cut purpose than those of his
reflections in Burma. Here the animals are fully symbolic, and appear not initially for accuracy of
events, but to specifically bring meaning and significance to human plight or human interaction.
Although Orwell invokes this animal symbolism in his earlier novels including Burmese Days, Orwell
s use of the nature of animals for political understanding and motivation is best seen in his last two
novels, 1984 and Animal Farm. Rats are used as a form of torture in 1984, as the protagonist Winston
s deepest fear. At the base level, rats represent a fear of disease, danger, lurking, death, and darkness
that is reflected throughout human history. Orwell ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, these characters physical situation as pigs who become indistinguishable when compared to
humans have just as much symbolic meaning as their historical place in the allegory. Benton Jay
Komins in his article Western Culture and the Ambiguous Legacies of the Pig explores the
anthropomorphization of the ruling pigs of Animal Farm, and its reflection on Orwell s opinions of
socialist revolution and fascism. The form of pigs for the dictators of Animal Farm reflect specifically
in western culture and perception of their relationships to human beings, media portrayal, and
ultimately as a tool to define what is civilized and [sic] uncivilized (1). In specific relation to Orwell,
Komins cites the general demonization of the carnivorous pig in Animal Farm to reflect our own
human capacities. Instead of comparing pigs to humans, Orwell compares humans to the nature of
pigs, blurring the lines between the two, allowing the reader to locate our own exploitative capacities
within the beast s meanings (6). According to Komin, the animal allegory exists primarily as a devise
to drive home his political messages of hierarchy and

Mojave Research Paper
People: A Menace to the Mojave When one think of what can be dangerous, or hostile towards a
natural environment, one might think of things like the cutting down of trees, or hunting, or urban
development. One thing that is common among all of these, is people. One of the most detrimental
factors to any environment, and especially the Mojave Desert of Southern California, is the human
being. Humans are responsible for damages caused by off road vehicles, pollution, and
industrialization. Each of these contributes to the damage, and destruction of natural desert lands, but
off road vehicles is a major contribution. We see off road vehicles all over the place, but the one are
that is impacted the most, is the desert. With places like Glamis, Ocotillo Wells, Dumont Dunes and
Johnson Valley, we see some major destruction to the desert. Even though off road vehicles are
permitted in these areas, many people still take their vehicles off designated trails and roadways. Off
road vehicles, when used irresponsibly, can cause irreparable damage to desert habitats, (national

Women, Islamic, And Saudi Arabian Women
The topic that stood out to me the most would be the impact of ethnicity amongst women. It is
amazing how much being a woman and being part of a certain ethnicity can have such an impact on a
woman s life. It is already hard enough for woman to been seen as equal, just imagine what it is like
being a woman of a particular ethnicity. The two articles that we discussed in class are about Filipino,
Islamic, and Saudi Arabian women. Filipino, Islamic, and Saudi Arabian women share some things in
common when it comes to their everyday lives and cultures. Within the Philippine culture, men and
women have very different duties in life. Men are supposed to be the worker of the house and the
women stay in and take care of the family. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, America has started to not think about that stereotype as much, whereas the Philippine
people have not budged on thinking any differently. Another thing that Filipina woman go through is
not having the privileges like other boys, especially their brothers. The author states, parents seldom
allowed their daughters to date, to stay out late, to spend the night at a friend s house, or to take an out
of town trip (Espiritu, p. 16). Therefore, the Filipino girls do not get to experience what it is like to be
a teenager. The girls could experience not being able to be social because of their parents keeping
them so distanced from the real world. This could damage them when they become adults. Another
thing that stood out was the same parents that are stopping their daughter from doing all these things,
are not stopping their son, who could be even younger than the daughter. This makes absolutely no
sense because why would someone let a younger child do something over the older child? A part of
the article that stood out to me was although many parents discourage or forbid dating for daughter,
they still fully expect them to fulfill their traditional roles as women: to marry and have children
(Espiritu, p. 17). This quote shows that Filipino woman do not have choices in life. It is like the
parents are being hypocrites because they are telling them not to do one thing but then expect them to
have a family. How are they supposed to both when they

Persepolis Women
Persepolis tells the story of a young girl named Marjane who grew up in Iran in the 1970 s. Iran at the
time was a dictatorship that experienced a period with a new leader as well as a war with Iraq.
Throughout Part One of Persepolis women and young girls are marginalized, excluded, and silenced
in order show the oppressive dictatorship of their religious society. Some examples of this are how
they are forced to dress, the jobs they are allowed to have, the way they must act, as well as what
happens to them when they are arrested. These are just some of the many examples of how women in
Persepolis are marginalized, excluded, and silenced particularly by a religious dictatorship. Body: The
book Persepolis shows a dictatorship silencing women and young girls in connection with how they
are required to dress. The first page opens with the main character of the book explaining that in 1980
the veil became obligatory for women to wear. Just as she illustrates all of the young girls in the class
photo very similarly. She draws the veil significant enough to conceal any of the girls distinct features.
Women and girls have no say whether or not they wear their veils. Nor do they have a say in how they
wear them. When speaking to the parents about their students, a staff member told them either they
obey the law or they re expelled (page 98). Yet men have a variety of clothing types they are allowed
to wear. On page 133 of Persepolis one Guardian of The Revolution told Marjane

The History of Labor Unions Essay
During the Progressive Era of the Gilded Age, many laborers were being mistreated by the companies
that they worked for. Because of this, workers started forming labor unions or organized association of
workers, formed to protect and further their rights and interests. Many of these labor unions failed,
while few of them achieved their goals and still exist today. Many factors contributed to the failure of
these labor unions. The labor unions were given a bad image, the reason for this was the media, and
they did this by publishing articles depicting the unions as violent, communist groups. The
government supported big business during this time, since the government had a lot of power; this was
a huge setback in the labor unions battles. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Other times, the newspapers would associate them with violence. During the Great Railroad Strike of

labeled socialist by the media. In the cartoon in Document C, the labor movement is shown to be
influenced by socialist controls. Considering the generally negative connotation that came with
communism in the United States, when newspapers like Harper s Weekly labeled organized labor as
socialist, many people developed a negative attitude towards organized labor. The disapproval of
organized labor was not exclusive to the American public but also the federal government. During the
late 20th century, the Supreme Court became increasingly conservative on the issue of organized
labor. In the Supreme Court case In re Debs, the court ruled that federal government controlled
interstate commerce and was obligated to keep the railroads from obstructions and in that specific

government saw organized labor as a detriment; it was no surprise that organized labor

Causes And Effects Of Multiple Personality Disorders
There are many cases that can be found in psychological records for multiple personality disorders
also, known as dissociative identity disorder. Dissociative Identity, formerly known as multiple
personality disorder, is a condition in which an individual has a host personality along with at least
two or more personalities with each identity having his or her own ideas, memories, thoughts and way
of doing things (Bennick). Personality disorders are a group of mental illnesses, they involve thoughts
and behaviors that are unhealthy and inflexible. A person with a personality disorder has trouble
perceiving and relating to situations and people (Mayo Clinic). This causes significant problems and
limitations in relationships, social activities, work and school (Mayo Clinic). In some cases, you may
not realize that you have a personality disorder because your way of thinking and behaving seems
natural to you, but in all honesty, it s not. You also might blame others for the challenges you face
(Mayo Clinic). Personality disorders usually begin in the teenage years or early adulthood (Mayo
Clinic). There are many types of personality disorders. Some types may become less obvious
throughout middle age (Mayo Clinic). The most common types of personality disorders are divided
into three clusters. Many people with one personality disorder also have signs and symptoms of at
least one additional personality disorder. Personality disorders in cluster A are

The Issei (first generation immigrants) crossed the Pacific Ocean to come to America because there
was a high demand for immigrants cheap labor. The Japanese left everything familiar to them. They
established their own communities of Japanese culture. The Japanese were discriminated and faced
with racial injustice. The Pearl Harbor attack was a spark for more people to hate Japanese living in
the United States. Then the Executive order signed by Roosevelt forced hundreds of Japanese
Americans to leave their homes and go to interment camps because people feared they were spies for
Japan. Most young men wanted to prove their loyalty to America and restore family honor so they

Life Coaching Essay
Although I am often referred to as a life coach, I believe perspective coach better describes what I
offer my clients.
I like the word perspective because it means a particular attitude toward something; a point of view.
A life coach is traditionally characterized as someone who counsels and encourages clients on matters
having to do with career or personal challenges; counseling often defined as a form of advice.
Although timely advice can be useful, many of us already have a number of well meaning people
lined up in our lives who are more than eager to dispense their vault of wisdom about the right way for
us to live a happy and successful life.

House Of Usher Gothic
Chapter 1
Introduction to The Fall of the House of Usher
Edgar Allan Poe was one of the seminal American poets and short story writers of the 19th century.
Edgar Allan Poe also worked as a literary critic and editor. In his lifetime, he had the distinction of
being one of the first American writers with more cultural cache in Europe than in the United States.
Edgar Allan Poe studied languages at the University of Virginia and United States Military Academy
at West Point; however, he withdrew or was dismissed from these institutions before taking a degree
(although at West Point he achieved the rank of cadet.)

Poe provides the recognizable building blocks of the Gothic tale, he contrasts this standard form with
a plot that is inexplicable, sudden, and full of unexpected disruptions. The crossing of borders pertains
vitally to the Gothic horror of the tale. The story features numerous allusions to other works of
literature, including the poems The Haunted Palace and Mad Trist by Sir Launcelot Cnning. Poe
composed them himself and then fictitiously attributed them to other sources. Both poems parallel and
thus predict the plot line of The Fall of the House of Usher. Mad Trist, which is about the forceful
entrance of Elthelred into the dwelling of a hermit, mirrors the simultaneous escape of Madeline from
her tomb. Mad Twist spookily crosses literary borders , as though Roderick s obsession with these
poems ushers their narratives into his own domain and brings them to life. At the opposite end of this
phantasmal interpretation is the modern day psychological view of this novel. The hardest thing to do

they lose the one on one interaction with their customers. If people no longer need to visit the bank to

perspective, they do not get the opportunity to develop personal relations with their customers. The

Conversely, customers also have negative views about online banking. One being the lack of personal
relationships that are formed when carrying out all their transactions at the bank. People often find it
easier to talk to another person about a problem they are having instead of trying to search online for
the answer. Having a relationship with a professional at your bank that understands your personal
needs often makes the customer feel special and help ease any worries that they may have when faced
with any type of banking questions. Additionally, certain services such as notarization and bank
signature guarantees are not available online. As previously mentioned, security is a major concern
with online banking. Many customers are nervous about allowing a bank to have access and records of
their sensitive and important financial information. Hacking and identity theft is a fairly common
occurrence so for customers to be wary about turning over all their financial information to the
internet is justifiable (Geoffrey). As technology becomes more and more advanced, the demand for
new innovative technology grows as well. As a nation, we have been moving increasingly towards a
more digital world and that is also true for our banking industry. The physical action of walking into a
bank to execute our banking needs is becoming less common and online banking is taking its place.

Mary Rowlandson vs Anne Bradstreet Essay
Mary Rowlandson and Anne Bradstreet are two women with different stories and one similar faith.
Their similar faith in God and passion for writing allowed the two women to survive the contrast of
hardships each woman had to endure. Furthermore, in this essay, I will compare and contrast the lives
and faith of Rowlandson and Bradstreet. In the story Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of
Mrs. Mary Rowlandson written by Mary Rowlandson herself, we read that she is taken captive by a
group of Indians. Rowlandson was torn away from husband, children, and town. Everything she had

youngest daughter in tow. If being took captive wasn t ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If it wasn t for those things, Rowlandson would have most likely developed a mental illness. Similarly,
Bradstreet, like Rowlandson, also became very lonely, despite having her children around for her
husband was gone a lot of the time. Simon [Bradstreet s] political duties kept him traveling to various
colonies on diplomatic errands, so Anne would spend her lonely days and nights reading from her
father s vast collection of books, and educating her children. (annebradstreet.com) As you can see,
Anne was left alone with her children most of the time.
Mary Rowlandson was kidnapped unlike Bradstreet. Because Rowlandson was kidnapped, this
influenced a lot of things in her life. More specifically, Rowlandson s writing. Rowlandson used her
experience to influence her writing, teach other people moral lessons, and educate them on the dangers
of the outside world. From the multiple biblical references in her narrative, I cannot help but come to
the conclusion that Rowlandson is not just putting the verses in there for herself. But that she is trying
to teach the reader a lesson by telling them not to stray from God when times are tough, and not to
move from salvation. On the contrary, Bradstreet was far from being kidnapped. Because Bradstreet
had different experiences than Rowlandson, the themes and messages behind her poetry is different
than Mary s. Bradstreet s poetry was mostly about her own feelings. According to one

The Play Of The Diary Of Anne Frank Analysis
Hiding in the holocaust was a horrible thing. If you had too, do you think you would survive?
Although it was horrific, one Jewish girl, Anne Frank said, In spite of everything, I still believe people
are really good at heart. Anne never lost hope. She never just looked at the negative in all things. She
thought that if someone was bad they could always change, and she was right. After reading The Play
of the Diary of Anne Frank I have come to the conclusion that I agree with Anne s quote. The biggest
reason I agree with Anne s quote is what Peter did. Even though I think this, there are some people
who do not agree with this quote. I think some people would disagree because of what selfish thing
Mr. Van Daan did with his wife s coat for himself.
There were a lot of other things in The Play of the Diary of Anne Frank, but there was one that got me

Women and the Draft Essay
Women and the Draft
Men have always been looked upon as the leading sex. Looking back through history women have
been the ones who take care of the home and children, while men are the ones who work and go to
war. However in recent years there s no doubt that women have become much more equal in the work
force. Nevertheless men are still the ones who are forced to fight our wars when the time calls for it.
Many think that women should be entirely equal to men having their choice to be drafted taken away
but the fact is that they are physically at a disadvantage, too emotionally oriented, and the increase of
female presence would have a more negative impact in the military in the way of social interactions.
In the military physical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without a choice women cannot excel to be above average and exceed their natural capabilities.
Another thing that should prevent women to be in the draft is emotion. Women are complex beings
with many chemical emotions causing them to react differently than men. Women s brains perceive
things in a more maternal way there for they consider circumstances differently. If a situation was
complicated and needed an immediate reaction a woman might not be the right person to make an
instant and thought out decision. She might reflect on it in a way that didn t conjure what the troop
needed at the moment. Women that are forced to be in war can easily get overwhelmed. Men can
come through due to instinct after hundreds of years of being the ones who take care of the physical
and difficult tasks at hand but women might not be as likely to react logically and can be easily
inundated by the stress. Having maternal instinct rather than survival technique can be a vast
disadvantage in combat causing emotion to be a handicap. An additional item that can cause a
shortcoming in the military is social interaction with women and men. In our society today women are
progressively moving up the ladder in all aspects of our country and this is a recent change. Most are
used to seeing women be the stay at home mom and men being the ones who work

The Pros And Cons Of Negligence
Introduction.
Negligence is a central topic in the vast area of Law Tort. It is largely due to Negligence being by far
most practiced by Tort lawyers with huge number of litigations each year. As per Sir Percy Henry
Winfield:
Negligence is the breach of a legal duty to take care which results in damage, undesired by the
Defendant to the Claimant.
In other words, it is a failure to exercise that degree of care, when law requires for the purpose of
protection of individuals, their properties and their financial interests. A duty of care is a legal
obligation to safeguard individuals who can be considered your neighbours from harm: (in your care,

The Role Of Urban Functional Space And Combination Of...
Introduction
Edge city was first put forward by Joel Garneau, a reporter of Washington Post, in his published book
in 1991 and then its meaning started to be crystal clear. Due to the rapid development of urban
economy and surge of population, edge city has gradually become the emergent trend of urban
development. The dispersion of urban functional space and combination of regional network has
facilitated a totally new model of urban development, which thus promotes the evolution of urban
spatial structure from single center to multi center. The formation of edge is not only an independent
node in the urban network area but also a necessary way to connect and communicate with peripheral
cities as well as a new form of multi center development in cities of the most developed countries.
This report will firstly describe the background of the edge city s emergence and its concept as well as
how to define this concept and then study and discuss the problems appearing during edge city
development through analysis of cases and data in order to offer relevant solution schemes.
1.Concept of Edge City
As a new form of urban development in the United States, edge cities are newly developed
commercial, residential and employment centers located in the suburbs of the former commercial
centers, which were farmland, villages and residential land 30 years ago. Now these emerging centers
clearly provide typical urban functions, such as employment, housing, tourism and transportation,

Examples Of Social Disorganization
Social Disorganization
According to Bartol Bartol (2011), it was through that the craving for the drug would become so
severe for all individuals that the user would lie, steal, or commit acts of violence to obtain more of

Additionally, dropping out of school and becoming drug addicted and dealer themselves. Also, some

For example, there are people who believe that single mothers choose to raise their children by
themselves, are unemployed, and receive government assistance. There two ways a parent can support
their children welfare or work. Welfare is a government program that provides a parent with food aid
known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Medicare offers health programs.
Also, childcare for working mothers and low income housing. Being a woman as a single parent, I
was not going to support my kids on the government system. I was determined to get a job and take
care of my family. I taught my children that there was no free meal in life. I worked two minimum
wage jobs because, I wanted my children live in a nice house, in a nice neighborhood, and they

Giovanni Boccaccio’s The Decameron Essay
Giovanni Boccaccio s the Decameron, written in the Early Renaissance, is a sharp social commentary
that reflected the ideas and themes of the Renaissance and of Renaissance Humanism. His tales of
nuns and priests caught in compromising situations, corrupt clergy selling chances to see religious
artifacts, and of wives cheating on their husbands show the changing ideals of the time and the
corruption that was running rampant within the church and in the lives of the general populace. The
Decameron speaks against this corruption and reflects the secular attitude of living as happily as
possible, demoting the principals of Christian morality that had ruled daily life in the time before the
Renaissance. Another concept that sprung from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the relic is replaced with a piece of coal, the monk is still able to manipulate the peasants into
giving him their money, persuading them in the heat of the moment that the charcoal is some other
precious religious relic.
In this manner, and with great profit for himself, Brother Cipolla turned the entire population...into
crusaders...he happened to rake in for himself all during the following year no less the charcoal had
that day (478).
The spirit of greed that characterized the time period drove even a monk to manipulate his
parishioners for personal profit. In the 1st day 2nd story tale of the Jew who goes to Rome and
observes how the clergy were acting, the Jew finds that
The more closely he observed them, the more he saw that they were all just avaricious and greedy for
money and that they were just as likely to buy and sell human (even Christian) blood as they were to
sell religious objects pertaining to the sacraments...and in these commercial ventures they carried on
more trade and had more brokers than there were engaged in any other business in Paris (41).
The attitude of the clergy was worse than that of the laity, as the clergy would have had a clear idea
that their greed for profit was a sin. The Decameron clearly reflects the greed and materialism that
Renaissance capitalism brought, and new attitude of the people who were no longer as concerned with
sinning.

The Laramie Project and Shakespeare
Artistic creations can be a means for the exploration of human attitudes, feelings and behaviors. The
performing arts are an example of an artistic media that can be utilized in this way. For example, the
use of theatre and film can be applied as way to explore some of the human attitudes, feelings and
behaviors that are related to topics such as tolerance, acceptance, anger, hatred and also forgiveness.
Two such performing arts examples are The Laramie Project and Shakespeare as presented in the
Secured Housing Unit (SHU) at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility (WVCF), a super maximum
security prison in the state of Indiana. These productions offer their creators and viewers alike, the
opportunity to learn much about the attitudes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My son died because of your ignorance and intolerance. I can t bring him back. But I can do my best
to see that this never, ever happens to another person or another family again. Wavering from a desire
for healing and feelings of anger, he followed with, You robbed me of something very precious, and I
will never forgive you for that. Although Dennis Shepard struggled with feelings of anger and hatred,
he was beginning the process of healing. Regarding the SHU Shakespearian production, the writers
decided to rework the ending scenes of their version of Hamlet. The men in the SHU determined that
Hamlet, when faced with the choice to revenge or not, must choose the latter because choosing
vengeance could only result in his death or imprisonment. The man in Cell E explained that,
Shakespeare doesn t offer an alternative to the violence. Is this the message we re trying to send
society, particularly the youth? No (Scott Douglass, 2007 p. 113.). The writers decided that Hamlet
would give a speech explaining an alternative way, I don t want to become what my father was. I don t
want to become what your father was. We ve got to break this cycle, man, the two of us, right here and
right now (Scott Douglass, 2007 p. 113.). The men in the SHU rewrote Hamlet in such a way as to
teach an alternative to retaliation, that of nonviolent social change. Each production offered a unique
lens with which one can observe the topics of hatred, anger, tolerance and

Long Term Memory Storage System
The skill to remember the people, events, and locations come across the path of everyday life is a
primary structure of cognition that shows behavior. The aggravation dealt with in problems (school,
friends in the halls or work, coworkers in the break room) provides as a concise reminder of our
reliance on memory. Long term memory storage system is characterized by long duration, large
capacity, and accessibility. Over the years, several different types of long term memory have been
distinguished, including explicit and implicit memory, declarative and nondeclarative memory (with
further subdivision of declarative memory in episodic and semantic memory. (Mastin. 1) Long term
memory can store an incredible amount of information over an extensive period. Long term memory
is everything we remember that occurred just minutes ago. Long term memories can be kept for a few
days or many years. Although we may forget things every day, it is possible that long term memory
essentially perishes as the years go by and can accumulate a limitless amount of information without
stopping. Many can argue if we in fact forget something at all, or it just becomes gradually harder to
recover things from our memory.
Long term memory is accountable for three areas, which are encoding, storing and retrieving.
Encoding is the capability to change information into an information structure. Storage is the ability to
collect large pieces of information. Recovering allows us to remember things

Protestant Work Ethic And The Spirit Of Capitalism Summary
In The Protestant Work Ethic and The Spirit of Capitalism , Max Weber writes on the principles of
modern day capitalism and what he thinks is the source of those principles. Weber published this work
in 1905, however, the ideas in this work still applies to today`s society in many ways. Weber writes
that the protestant religion pushes people to look for signs that they have been saved. These signs
include wealth on earth. This pushes people to work hard and accumulate wealth. Weber describes
wealthy people as people who ascetically saved money and worked. If weber states that people who
are saved are wealthy, then poor people were probably seen as sinners or bad people because they did
not hold the same ascetic ways of life as the wealthier

Ledan Research Paper
Ledan (currently going by the alias of Ledan Leda Hale) is an archangel/human hybrid, sometimes
known as an Archnephilim (a phrase coined by Dean) and a witch, known or at least believed to be
one of the only ones of his kind, maybe even the olnly one. He uses his witchcraft to perform spells on
demand, occasionally for money but usually he ll do it for an nondescript favour (which you ll be
bound to) that can be called in at any time. He was born in 339BC, in early Iron Age Sweden, and
grew up believing, in his early years, he was an average human. However, he is the son of the
archangel Jophiel (who died when he was two) and a powerful witch called ThyrvĂŻ; making him very
much not. He believed this because his powers took time to manifest, and even when they did, in the
beginning they were relatively harmless. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He married a woman called Ásta, with whom he had several children; Cenríkr, Ælfríkr, Sigríðr, Méja

unnamed children of their own, Leda s grandchildren. As a type being not created by god he is
considered by most angels to be an abomination, as a type of being not created by god is considered a
blasphemy, and thus are hunted. Due to his mix of Archangel and Human he is probably at least near
omnipotent (at least as near to it as an Archangel is), but is still (even after 2,353 years) in the stage of
developing his powers. However, due to the hex that was recently placed on him, he s currently able to
use a limited amount of power at a time; causing him to become weak after prologued use of the
powers he has through his father s (his archangel) side. This has seemingly not affected his spells,
however, and so he s still been able to continue his day to day

Many of the tools the Act provides to law enforcement to fight terrorism have been used for decades to fight organized crime and drug dealers, and have been reviewed and approved by the courts. This Act allows law enforcement to use surveillance against more crimes of terror. Before the Patriot Act, courts could permit law enforcement to conduct electronic surveillance to investigate many ordinary, non terrorism crimes, such as drug crimes, mail fraud, and passport fraud. Agents also could obtain wiretaps to investigate some, but not all, of the crimes that terrorists often commit. • 7. Symptoms And Treatment Of A Thyroid Nodule Essay Introduction A thyroid nodule is a discrete lesion within the thyroid gland that is distinguishable from the adjacent parenchyma. Sonographic examination of enlarged nodular thyroids, demonstrated that 66% had multiple nodules, whereas 34% had single nodules. Among these single nodules, 85% 90% were proved to be benign. Adenomatous nodules represent most of benign thyroid nodules (80%), whereas the remaining benign nodules consisted of adenoma, cyst, and focal thyroiditis (1). The differentiation of single benign nodule and malignant one is considered an important goal. Early diagnosis of thyroid cancer avoids unneeded surgery in those complaining of benign nodules and decreases both mortality and morbidity rates of the disease (2). Although both fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and ultrasound are considered to be the most important tools in thyroid nodules evaluation, uncertain diagnosis of the nodule even by experienced hands still remains a problem and sometimes surgery has to be done for precise diagnosis. The percentage of indeterminate nodules might be small, however a significant number of patients performed surgery for benign disease (3); thus there is a need for a new noninvasive presurgical diagnostic test to avoid unnecessary surgery (4). Routine T1 and T2 weighted MR imaging cannot differentiate benign from malignant nodules or assess the functional status of thyroid nodules, thus its role in thyroid nodules evaluation is limited (5). The Discovery and Observation of the Cosmic Microwave Background: Implications for Cosmology On a spring day in late May in 1964, the future of our understanding of the universe was greatly influenced, arguable on accident. Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson essentially heard the buzz that the universe was echoing into their headphones, but they could not wrap their head around what it was. The two scientists were bewildered by the odd humming sound that was picked up by their labs horn antenna and they had no idea the significance of what they were listening to. They thought it must have been some sort of interference from a secondary source in or around their lab and antenna. They did everything in their power to eliminate anything that could possibly interfere with the radio signals that they were receiving; they went as far as getting rid of pigeons that had their nest on top of the astronomer s antenna. It was not until they successfully got rid of anything that could potentially explain this noise that they came to the exciting conclusion that what they stumbled upon must be big. Filipino, Islamic, and Saudi Arabian women share some things in common when it comes to their everyday lives and cultures. Within the Philippine culture, men and women have very different duties in life. Men are supposed to be the worker of the house and the women stay in and take care of the family. The ... Another thing that Filipina woman go through is not having the privileges like other boys, especially their brothers. The author states, parents seldom allowed their daughters to date, to stay out late, to spend the night at a friend s house, or to take an out of town trip (Espiritu, p. 16). Therefore, the Filipino girls do not get to experience what it is like to be a teenager. The girls could experience not being able to be social because of their parents keeping them so distanced from the real world. This could damage them when they become adults. Another thing that stood out was the same parents that are stopping their daughter from doing all these things, are not stopping their son, who could be even younger than the daughter. This makes absolutely no sense because why would someone let a younger child do something over the older child? A part of the article that stood out to me was although many parents discourage or forbid dating for daughter, they still fully expect them to fulfill their traditional roles as women: to marry and have children (Espiritu, p. 17). This quote shows that Filipino woman do not have choices in life. It is like the parents are being hypocrites because they are telling them not to do one thing but then expect them to have a family. Throughout Part One of Persepolis women and young girls are marginalized, excluded, and silenced in order show the oppressive dictatorship of their religious society. Some examples of this are how they are forced to dress, the jobs they are allowed to have, the way they must act, as well as what happens to them when they are arrested. These are just some of the many examples of how women in Persepolis are marginalized, excluded, and silenced particularly by a religious dictatorship. Body: The book Persepolis shows a dictatorship silencing women and young girls in connection with how they are required to dress. The first page opens with the main character of the book explaining that in 1980 the veil became obligatory for women to wear. Just as she illustrates all of the young girls in the class photo very similarly. She draws the veil significant enough to conceal any of the girls distinct features. Women and girls have no say whether or not they wear their veils. Nor do they have a say in how they wear them. When speaking to the parents about their students, a staff member told them either they obey the law or they re expelled (page 98). Yet men have a variety of clothing types they are allowed to wear. Because of this, workers started forming labor unions or organized association of workers, formed to protect and further their rights and interests. Many of these labor unions failed, while few of them achieved their goals and still exist today. Many factors contributed to the failure of these labor unions. The labor unions were given a bad image, the reason for this was the media, and they did this by publishing articles depicting the unions as violent, communist groups. Poe provides the recognizable building blocks of the Gothic tale, he contrasts this standard form with a plot that is inexplicable, sudden, and full of unexpected disruptions. The crossing of borders pertains vitally to the Gothic horror of the tale. The story features numerous allusions to other works of literature, including the poems The Haunted Palace and Mad Trist by Sir Launcelot Cnning. Poe composed them himself and then fictitiously attributed them to other sources. Both poems parallel and thus predict the plot line of The Fall of the House of Usher. Mad Trist, which is about the forceful entrance of Elthelred into the dwelling of a hermit, mirrors the simultaneous escape of Madeline from her tomb. Mad Twist spookily crosses literary borders , as though Roderick s obsession with these poems ushers their narratives into his own domain and brings them to life. Rowlandson used her experience to influence her writing, teach other people moral lessons, and educate them on the dangers of the outside world. From the multiple biblical references in her narrative, I cannot help but come to the conclusion that Rowlandson is not just putting the verses in there for herself. But that she is trying to teach the reader a lesson by telling them not to stray from God when times are tough, and not to move from salvation. On the contrary, Bradstreet was far from being kidnapped. Because Bradstreet had different experiences than Rowlandson, the themes and messages behind her poetry is different than Mary s. Due to the rapid development of urban economy and surge of population, edge city has gradually become the emergent trend of urban development. The dispersion of urban functional space and combination of regional network has facilitated a totally new model of urban development, which thus promotes the evolution of urban spatial structure from single center to multi center. In this manner, and with great profit for himself, Brother Cipolla turned the entire population...into crusaders...he happened to rake in for himself all during the following year no less the charcoal had that day (478). The spirit of greed that characterized the time period drove even a monk to manipulate his parishioners for personal profit. In the 1st day 2nd story tale of the Jew who goes to Rome and observes how the clergy were acting, the Jew finds that The more closely he observed them, the more he saw that they were all just avaricious and greedy for money and that they were just as likely to buy and sell human (even Christian) blood as they were to sell religious objects pertaining to the sacraments...and in these commercial ventures they carried on more trade and had more brokers than there were engaged in any other business in Paris (41). Wavering from a desire for healing and feelings of anger, he followed with, You robbed me of something very precious, and I will never forgive you for that. Although Dennis Shepard struggled with feelings of anger and hatred, he was beginning the process of healing. Regarding the SHU Shakespearian production, the writers decided to rework the ending scenes of their version of Hamlet. The men in the SHU determined that Hamlet, when faced with the choice to revenge or not, must choose the latter because choosing vengeance could only result in his death or imprisonment. The man in Cell E explained that, Shakespeare doesn t offer an alternative to the violence. Is this the message we re trying to send society, particularly the youth? No (Scott Douglass, 2007 p. 113.). The writers decided that Hamlet would give a speech explaining an alternative way, I don t want to become what my father was. I don t want to become what your father was. We ve got to break this cycle, man, the two of us, right here and right now (Scott Douglass, 2007 p. 113.). Many can argue if we in fact forget something at all, or it just becomes gradually harder to recover things from our memory. Long term memory is accountable for three areas, which are encoding, storing and retrieving. Encoding is the capability to change information into an information structure. Storage is the ability to collect large pieces of information. Recovering allows us to remember things ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ledan Research Paper Ledan (currently going by the alias of Ledan Leda Hale) is an archangel/human hybrid, sometimes known as an Archnephilim (a phrase coined by Dean) and a witch, known or at least believed to be one of the only ones of his kind, maybe even the olnly one. He uses his witchcraft to perform spells on demand, occasionally for money but usually he ll do it for an nondescript favour (which you ll be bound to) that can be called in at any time. He was born in 339BC, in early Iron Age Sweden, and grew up believing, in his early years, he was an average human. However, he is the son of the archangel Jophiel (who died when he was two) and a powerful witch called ThyrvĂŻ; making him very much not. He believed this because his powers took time to manifest, and even when they did, in the beginning they were relatively harmless. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to his mix of Archangel and Human he is probably at least near omnipotent (at least as near to it as an Archangel is), but is still (even after 2,353 years) in the stage of developing his powers. However, due to the hex that was recently placed on him, he s currently able to use a limited amount of power at a time; causing him to become weak after prologued use of the powers he has through his father s (his archangel) side. This has seemingly not affected his spells, however, and so he s still been able to continue his day to day ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
