no other leaving the open ended idea of the horror which can never truly be defined. Therefore, Giving
the character of Mr. Marlow more ideas about the real world and imperialism, represented by Mr.
Kurtz. Power corrupts a man, Mr. Kurtz proves that point; Mr. Kurtz is the idea of imperialism,
controlling the natives( savages ) to keep as protection from harm and going insane. They were not
criminals, they were nothing earthly now, nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation, lying
confusedly in the greenish gloom. The policy of extending a country s power and influence through
diplomacy or military force. Subsequently, is exactly what Mr. Kurtz represents in the trade and
discovery of ivory which leads him to go crazy. Using fear and the gaslight method on the savages Mr.
Kurtz completes the task of controlling and gaining influence over the native people. Much like slaves
in the United States reacted the same way as the savages wish to keep Mr. Kurtz as he was in his last

4. Understand The Difference Between Engine And A 6 Cylinder...
Choosing Between A 4 Cylinder And A 6 Cylinder Engine
When purchasing a vehicle, new or used the type of engine is just as important as any other feature.
Understanding the difference between the different engine types and sizes will help you to make an
informed decision when choosing a vehicle.
What Is The Difference?
A 4 cylinder engine contains 4 pistons while a 6 cylinder contains 6, driving the power of your engine.
So the easy answer would be more cylinders equals more power. Most small cars, light trucks, and
even some small SUV s contain 4 cylinder engines. 4 cylinder engines are typically inline engines (the
4 cylinders are in a straight line as opposed to a v shape like most 6 cylinder engines), making them
smaller and lighter weight.

6. American Environmental Movement
Have you ever caught yourself criticizing a littered area of your favorite park? Or cringed at the bitter
taste of an apple s skin, due to heavy pesticides? Like you, many Americans began to socially
denounce the mistreatment of their natural world, thus sweeping an environmental movement across
the United States. The modern environmentalist ideas that help safe guard the nature in our everyday
world have grown into a hugely adopted cultural movement through decades of research and
persuasion. Its influence on America and other parts of the world vastly differs from society to society,
however, the fundamental ideas seem to remain concrete through time.
The American environmental movement holds itself in high esteem both in the common individual
opinion, and its literal definition. The environmental movement describes the attempt to purify and

Many counterclaims enter human thought, including, exaggeration of facts, content, the idea of hidden
truths about our environment, and laziness. For example, in 1983, researches released their fears of
ozone degeneration and looked into both the reality and causes. Because of some faulty information
and controversial data, many citizens disregarded the warning and made no efforts to increase fuel
friendliness. Ignoring the threat also allowed every day people the ease and capital provision of using
more harmful gases in their machines and vehicles. However, in May of 1985, an article was released,
confirming the ozone hole over the Antarctic. People throughout America began to drastically increase

7. Authority Control
Authority control is a method of controlling and limiting where the object in the catalogue gets
shelved under, and what terminology can be used to search for said objects. There are two types of
authority control for this database and those are name and subject.
Now, name authority control is generally used for large collections, to narrow a search or when there
are too many subject terms to search by. To use name authority, it identifies the object in the collection
by its title, publisher or even the author(s). Name authority allows them to be able to locate objects
with ease, so that they can spend more time on other things. For example, if there is more than one
object with similar titles or authors.
To use subject authority control for paranormal romance is about using terms such as magicks or
mythology to represent where the objects should be shelved or grouped under. The authority control
allows the objects to be found with ease in different sections for them to locate which subgenre or
subject within paranormal romance that is desired. For example, under the authority control (subject)
the term mythology one would find Demons which can be found in numerous cultures, or Valkyrie
that come from Norse mythology. It is a broad search, with many results because objects can contain
similarities in description or subjects. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

9. Dilantin Synthesis Lab Report
Abstract Dilantin is an antiepileptic drug by acting on the nervous system and this lab synthesized
pure Dilantin through a multistep process. The first step involves using the coenzyme, thiamine, as a
catalyst to synthesize benzoin. Benzoin is oxidized to benzil using NH4NO3 to regenerate amounts of
cupric acetate, followed by reaction with urea in a base to yield Dilantin. Experimental physical
properties and spectral data were analyzed to show relatively pure Dilantin synthesized. Introduction:
The purpose of this multistep lab is to synthesize the drug Dilantin, which is part of the hydantoins

For benzil, the IR has sp3 C H, C=O and C=C aromatic stretch (Table 1) that correspond to the
literature6, however, there is also the presence of an O H peak that is not expected and is due to the
presence of unreacted benzoin. This helps to explain the low yield of Dilantin (20.9%) because not all
of the crude benzil would have reacted as some of it would have been benzoin. The Dilantin was
successfully synthesis as the final product showed N H, sp3 C H, C=O and C=C aromatic stretches

improve the yields of this multistep synthesis the procedure should be modified to allow a longer
reaction time to condense all of the benzaldehyde to benzoin in the first step as 1.5 h is not sufficient
as shown by the TLC. Furthermore, recrystallization should be performed after each synthetic step as
to remove impurities and potential side products that may

Society s Impact Pertaining to Juveniles and Death Penalty
The juvenile death penalty and in turn the death penalty are a much debated topic. Society has
conflicting views on the two topics, and these views have impacted the laws concerning the death
penalty and juvenile death penalty. Eventually, societal views have made changes to both issues over
time.
The Death Penalty
The death penalty is death as a punishment given by court of law for very serious crimes. It is also
referred to as capital punishment (Merriam Webster, Incorporated, 2017). In other words, if a person

Thomas Bird was the first federal execution (ProCon, 2013). Starting around 1833, public executions
were attacked as cruel. Many states enacted laws providing private hangings. Rhode Island (1833),
Pennsylvania (1834), New York (1835), Massachusetts (1835), and New Jersey (1835) all abolished

In the 1880s Thomas Edison building electrical lighting systems in U.S. cities, and to demonstrate its
power he would electrocute animals. This led to people wanting to use electrocution as an execution

From 1967 to 1972 there was a voluntary moratorium (ban or halt) because public opinion turned
against the death penalty. Legal authorities were questioning whether executions were against the
Eighth Amendment for cruel and unusual punishment. Public support for the death penalty fell to its
lowest point where only 42% of Americans approved of the death penalty. This halt of the death

FY2010. Following this, the company s current ratio declined from 1.27 at the end of the FY2009 to

19. The Case Of Feral Children
It is essential to realize that isolation from society breeds dehumanization, a proof of that is the case of
feral children, the ones who had almost no social contact during their infancy. Ones were even
reported to have been raised by wild animals. Take the case of Anna, a girl who had been kept for
almost six years in a dark room, barely fed, neglected completely by her mother. When she was
discovered, she could not speak, walk, not to mention she was indifferent to everything around her.
Her case shows exactly how badly one can be affected by seclusion. However, Silas Marner s situation
differs in some respects from the one mentioned previously, since he was an adult. Yet one cannot help
but observe the change in his character and way of being, as he even started resembling the things to
which he was deeply tied, his loom and his gold.
Strangely Marner s face and figure shrank and bent themselves into a constant mechanical relation to
the objects of his life, so that he produced the same sort of impression as a handle or a crooked tube,
which has no meaning standing apart. (Eliot 15)
The third stage is marked by the sequence in which Dunstan stole his gold which also showcased the
aftermath of isolation. This apparent adversity forced him out of his shell, compelled him to seek help

24. An Explication Of Sylvia Plath s Daddy
Sylvia Plath is a passionate poet, and her poem Daddy shows a broad range of emotions. She likes to
use her writing to let out all her delicate feelings and expresses how she feels in her poem Daddy. This
particular poem of hers is somewhat dark and leaves the person who reads this with a sense of
hopelessness and misery, the reader questions why the writer feels this way. The speaker of Sylvia
Plath s poem Daddy depicts that she both loves and dislikes her father.
By reading this poem, you can undertake that she is speaking about her affiliation with her father, for
the reason that the title states it. Her raw emotions of unhappiness and fury that are in this poem
portray this assumption pretty well. By interpreting this poem her father was a German refugee and

The poem also expresses diverse emotions such as anger, grief, depression, and some distress. There
are several imageries of oppression in her poem Daddy of Nazis, swastikas, barbed wires, fascists,
brutes, devils, and vampires are so frantic, imposing, and vituperative that the poem seems more out
of control that it truly is. (http://web.b.ebscohost.com.ezp.tccd.edu) In Plath s poem, it is clear that
these characteristics are fantasies, not for the ultimate and distinct purpose that they arise inside a text,
but because the sonnet addresses the production of imaginary as such. In this sense, I read Daddy as a
poem about its conditions of language and illusion production. Rather than casually produce
identification, it asks a question about identification, laying out one set of unbearable psychic
conditions under which such an identification with the Jew might take place.

25. The Impact Of Music On Secondary Education
Some of the most significant problems facing parents, teachers, and students is the impact of music on
secondary education. Parents and teachers alike, are continuously trying to cut the ties between
secondary students and the influences of bad music during the school day. More research is being
done on this topic to educate students, parents, and teachers. One of the main reasons secondary
students are still influenced by music during the school day is because of the lack of research. Studies
are continuously being made on this subject. In Lost in Translation: An Enculturation Effect in Music
Memory Performance , researchers and students at the University of California, with the help of their
professors, took participants who spoke English or Turkish and played music in their native tongue/
language while they read a book to see if the participants remember the music played or the book read
(Demorest, Steven M., et al.). After the study, the author states The results suggest that our cognitive
schemata for musical information are culturally derived . In conclusion the participants remembered
the music in their native tongue/ language rather than the novel they were reading. As studies like
these continue, students will become more educated on the impact of music on their secondary
education and their ancestors . Music plays an important role in culture and is a strong influence on
today s youth (White,2007). In This Is Your Brain on Music: the Science of a Human

26. Essay on Ghost on the Throne Book Review
James Romm wrote Ghost on the Throne with the purpose to inform the reader of Alexander the Great
and the empire he established, with the ensuing chaos the came after when Alexander tragically died at
a young age. The book was organized somewhat chronologically, starting from opening the tombs in
which Alexander was buried and how he fell ill, to the closing of the tombs and a reflection of the fall
of his empire. Romm tried to answer the question of how Alexander died, providing multiple theories
of how and why he died. Romm seemed to advocate the theory of poison from Alexander s enemies,
including the fact that many people wanted to see Alexander dead. Romm also explained in great
detail how the empire fell; the countries wanted to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The people were devastated and afraid that they had lost him. The two ideas are relevant to each other
and support the author s idea; that Alexander was perceived as a God to his people. However, the
switch in time periods makes the book more difficult to understand than if it was explained
chronologically. Romm did go into much detail about Alexander: he explained Alexander s family
history, his top advisors, his love life, his illness, and over all Alexander s personality. Romm
describes Alexander s family history and how he came to assume the throne after his father was
assassinated. Romm provided historical evidence of Alexander s family through the opening of
Alexander s tombs and sculptures found of other members of his family. Also mentioned were
Alexander s top military advisors and closest friends, known as the Successors. Detail was provided
that they did not try to succeed the king for the first seven years after Alexander s death. They wanted
his power, but not the throne. This supported the author s idea of people desiring power but how they
were conflicted with their respect for Alexander. Romm discussed Alexander s marriages as well as
his quest to conquer, showing a different side of Alexander. Alexander is mostly portrayed with a great
work ethic, imbued with a great desire. Through his last days, however, Romm expresses more of

The Public Enemy by William Wellman (1931) is a renowned gangster film that paved the way for an

was beginning to feel the effects of the Wall Street Crash, which meant that they began producing

3. TV is a World of Good and Bad
Even though both criminals and cops can both commit justifiable violence television is still a simple
medium. TV presents good guys and bad guys. On average, there are 15 minutes of commercials for
every one hour of TV programming, so producers only have a short amount of time in which to
establish plot, story, characters and resolution. Good characters and bad characters must be quickly
and simply established.
Deeper, more realistic, more ambiguous characterizations make it hard for viewers to know who to
root for. It also requires more screen time that takes away from on screen action, states the Center for
Media Literacy. As a result, TV and film criminals are reduced to caricatures. They are l00% bad. No
one could care about them. They have no families. Many of them don t even have full names, only
nick names. They deserve no sympathy and they get what they deserve.
The bad guys, whether they are cops or robbers, have to be 100% bad to justify the violence against
them. Television violence is the struggle of good versus evil. It s OK to shoot the bad guy after all, he
s the bad guy.
According to the study by the Center for Media and Public Affairs, the most violent show observed in
1999 was CBS Walker, Texas Ranger. This show took the top spot for overall violence with a rate of

Written in 1826 and directed in 1915 respectively, The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore
Cooper and The Birth of a Nation by D.W. Griffith were foundational in influencing both the
American novel and film industry. Consequently, they are also two of the most controversial texts in
American history as they epitomize racism and the desire for an all white society. Cooper s vision of
an emerging American national character/identity is similar to Griffith s obvious wish for a white

readers and allow them to experience some success then they maybe more inclined to branch out on
their own to become independent readers. Textbooks are only as up to date as the day they leave the

laptops and textbooks were converted to ebooks. As ebooks, the text could be updated daily and
students could have access to up to date information at their fingertips at all times, instead of the
traditional textbooks that are now in schools which can be as old as 5 7 years old.

35. Carol Ann Duffy Allusions

ENGL 3487

Sympathy verses Judgment in Carol Ann Duffy s poem Salome
The poem Salome by Carol Ann Duffy is written from the perspective of Salome, a promiscuous
woman who is retelling her drunken night. Although it is unclear whom Salome is speaking to, she
tells her story using informal, colloquial language, as if conversing to a group of friends. Duffy uses
Biblical allusions, which suggest that the speaker can be considered a reflection of the Biblical
character Salome, who appears in the New Testament and is infamous for demanding the head of John
the Baptist. Although Duffy seems to be retelling the traditional story of Salome, she depicts Salome
as a modern figure. The following analysis will explore the Biblical allusions in Duffy s poem, which
help to determine what the poem is about, and moreover will explore how Duffy uses the dramatic
monologue to provoke the reader to have sympathy for Salome. I thus contend that Duffy takes the
reader into the mind of Salome, a character that has traditionally been portrayed as an evil, amoral
woman, in order for the reader to view her from a perspective of sympathy rather than judgment.
As stated, rather than depicting Salome as a completely wicked and cynical character, Duffy provides
indications that the reader is meant to sympathize with her. This is hinted at in the language that Duffy
uses and the different tones in each stanza, proposing that Salome s thoughts are changing

Martin Gilens provides a comprehensive assessment of the economic inequality and political power in
America. He explores on how the affluence of politicians influences the political setting of the
country. According to the author, political equality is considered as the philosophy of democracy. Due
to the inequalities that exist among the citizens regarding information, social and political affairs, it
would be impractical to anticipate equal influence over policy making. Nature and the degree of
representative inequalities depict the extent of democracy in a particular society. The author points out
that when the inequalities in the political influence intensify, democracy shifts into oligarchy, whereby

The article pinpoints the fact that it is difficult to disentangle the personal preferences of the
Congressional members from influences that could affect their behaviors in decision making. There is
no reliable technique of measuring the personal preferences of the representatives that are unaffected
by the demands presented by their constituents. Various scholars who have analyzed this scenario have
made efforts to assess the roles that are played by individual preferences through identifying some
individual characteristics that are related to the interests and preferences of the representative. For
instance, the personal wealth of the member might be linked with their economic policy preferences,
and the use of tobacco by the member may be linked to their tobacco legislation preferences.
Gilens also carried research on the professional histories of the representatives before their entrance to
the Congress. Unlike the previous assessment that the author had carried out about the economic
status, he found out that the histories of the members are related to their Congressional voting records.
Gilens also finds significant differences between the representatives and most of the conformist

43. Employees Motivation Essay
Employees Motivation A business seeks profit by provided customers with goods and services
(Schoell, et al 15). There are various types of businesses that differ according to their ownership. The
three basic forms of private ownership businesses are the sole proprietorship (i.e. sole trader),
partnership, and corporation (Schoell, et al 132). The type of ownership that a business organization
would apply is dependent on the owner s financial status and objectives. Apart from the different types
of ownerships, there are various styles of management and leadership. The organization s management
and leadership style has a great effect on the working environment and the employees motivation. The

The autocratic style of leadership would be considered the most task oriented type, in which the
manager carry out all the decision making process without any consultations from subordinates.
Communication is one way, where the work provided by the manager is to be done without any
modifications by the subordinates. In this style of leadership, the delegation of authority is centralized,
meaning that the decision making is only performed by top line managers and is rarely delegated to
subordinates along the chain of command (Bovee, et al 476 8). The democratic leadership style is
more of a participative type of leadership (Schoell, et al 286). It is a two way communication
leadership, in which employees are allowed to contribute in the decision making; however, the
manager makes the final decision. The delegation of authority in this style of leadership is less
centralized and more decentralized than in the autocratic style. Employees feel more flexible, since
they are allowed to modify in the methods of accomplishing the tasks and to contribute in the decision
making. This changes the working environment; making it an environment with a lot of team working,
where each employee feels that he plays an essential role in the well being of the business (Bovee, et
al 476 8). The free reign style of leadership is the most lenient style, in which the employees have the

44. Descriptive Essay About The Zoo
The sun was shining, the sky was spotted with clouds, and the wind was whistling as it passed through
the trees. Overall, it was the perfect day to visit the zoo. Smiling, happy children bounded beside me
as I walked underneath the large, blue and yellow sign announcing The Colorado Zoo. As I walked
onto the sidewalk, I looked out over the habitats. The big, colorful signs advertising the exotic animals
brought from all over the world! Animals that were taken from their home, taken from their habitats,
and taken to a world where they are put on display. Animals who are forced to live out their lives in
zoos in unhealthy, degrading, and devastating ways. The first exhibit I encountered was the black
bears. Their thick, glistening fur was reflecting the light on and off as they paced the entire patch of
land. Walking back and forth, the bears footprints could be seen in the dirt as they slowly wove a path
into the land. One bear was just lying around in the blistering sun barely moving. No trees, no bushes,
and no pools of water to allow the animals to cool down. The more I looked, the more I noticed how
barren the display was. I couldn t stop thinking how sad the entire place looked when I compared it to
the bears natural habitat, how artificial the habitat probably seemed to the bears, and how in most
cases this life was the only one the bears would ever know. There was just a round prison with limited
space, in which three enormous bears lived. Most bears in the wild are solitary creatures who only
come together for mating season, but here they were forced to spend all day with each other. Forcing
myself to continue, I made my way to the the tigers. Animals are meant to roam miles and miles every
day. These animals are contained every hour of every day in small enclosures that prohibit the animals
from following their basic instincts. Looking at the tigers, I could very clearly see how this was
affecting the animals. The tigers whole body was round and looked like a balloon. Although it was an
adorable sight, I immediately noticed that the tigers were so fat they would roll around on the ground
instead of walking. I quickly stopped smiling when I realized just how miserable the tigers looked and
