Charlie Fish Use Of Foreshadowing In Death By Scrabble
Charlie Fish s story Death by Scrabble is a suspenseful story about how much a husband wanted to
kill his wife. Fish uses foreshadowing, red herring, and sensory imagery in his story. The use of these
Art of Suspense techniques can inspire readers to continue to the end, wondering what will happen
next.
Foreshadowing is a common technique used in stories, whether it is fiction or nonfiction. In the story,
Death by Scrabble, the author makes it that for every word played in the game, the word, in a way,
comes true. When the husband plays ZAP, his wife gets an electric shock. As well as when he plays
EXPLODES, the air conditioning unit explode[d] (Fish 2). The author hints that the wife is aware of
what her husband is planning when she plays CAUTION as one of her words. When Fish writes about
how much the husband wants to kill his wife, he writes: Maybe I should kill her, if only I had a D,
then I could play MURDER (Fish 1). This leads us, the readers, to believe that the husband wants to
kill his wife and is, in some way, excited to do so. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sensory imagery is used in almost all short stories to help readers imagine and picture what is going
on. While I was reading the story, I could imagine the setting and what was going on. In the beginning
of the story, the author mentions that It [is] a blistering hot Sunday afternoon (Fish

The First Confiscation Act Of September 1862
With this knowledge Congress passed Major General Benjamin F. Butler quick thinking into a policy,
the First Confiscation Act, in August of 1861 which stated that the federal government had authority to
seize any property owned by the Confederates which included slaves. By March the following year, an
Article of War was produced which prohibited any military or naval services from returning run away
or fugitive slaves to their respective masters, nullifying the Fugitive Acts all together. When the
Second Confiscation Act was announced in July of 1862 it declared forever free Confederate owned
slaves who made their way to federal lines or who resided in rebellious territory that fell to federal
forces (Luke and Smith 2014, 14). Also in the bill, was the legitimisation of the president to utilise
persons of African descent in any way that he considered necessary and proper for the suppression of
the rebellion (Luke and Smith 2014, 14). Thus the Militia Act of July 1862, which gave Lincoln carte
blanche (Luke and Smith 2014, 14) to make use of black resources. Although these acts were issued
with the intention of blacks serving as military labour it gave way to many possibilities. The first to
act on these possibilities was Major General Jon C. Frémont, in August 1861, who emancipated the
slaves of Missouri rebels. By late August, following him, but surpassing freeing slaves, Republican
U.S. senator and brigadier general James H. Jim Lane, a Free Soiler and

Is Doing The Right Thing Wrong By David Montero
Child Labor
Your child is the person you have taken care of since birth. That does not change around the globe.
What does change is how the child lives their life. Do they spend their evenings dancing to a popular
tune bought on a $200 iPod, enough to buy food for a month for a poverty stricken family, or sewing
the seams of shoes together so they can earn money, only for some child the same age to wear it once
and forget about it. Would you stop buying these products just because they were made by someone
around the age of your child? Do you really think you ll be helping them by not buying these products
instead of donating to the nearest charity? People should not halt their consumption of products just
because children were the manufacturers.
Many children work in factories to help support their families. As Americans, we always say to help
others in need, but when we find out children are working to support the family, we believe not buying
the products made is beneficial and just when in reality it hurts the child. According to the article Is

On the contrary, the occupation of adolescents is not coming closer to an end but perhaps just farther
away from factories. In actuality, the responsibility does not lie with the company but with the
government, according to Is Doing the Right Thing Wrong? by David Montero. Why must we boycott
the establishments instead of the régime? After all, the government is the force of action that allows
child labor. If someone is to be punished for child labor, it should not be the companies nor should the
retribution be preventing consumers from buying a certain brand. The issue should be handled
politically and with the representative of the nation, not some basic corporation that happened to place
its business in that

The Effects Of Food On The Food Industry
There are currently two types of food systems that exist in our food shed. TINA, which comes from
Maggie Thatcher, who said, There Is No Alternative to global economy T I N A (Shuman, 2002). And
LOIS, which stands for Local Ownership and Import Substitution (Shuman, 2002). TINA is the
system that has been used for the pasted 60 to 70 years, and throughout that time the way we produced
are food has become both productive and efficient; but it has also become destructive and unhealthy.
In A TINA based food economy, food is either mass produced through the process of industrial
farming or it is imported from other countries. These lead to adverse effects on the food, the
environment and the economy. However, in a LOIS based food economy, food is produced locally
through locally owned businesses, then the more you can minimize your vulnerability to nasty
surprises, the more you can maximize your economic multiplier, and the more you can maximize tax
proceeds to the public sector and the many good things that come from it. (Shuman, 2002). So in
simpler terms the more you produce locally, the better local economies will be and if local economies
have a large income then the nations income will increase by way of tax. Along with being good for
our economy, LOIS has little to no adverse effect on our environment or health. Compared to TINA,
LOIS looks like paradise, but just like every dream world, the LOIS system is currently an impossible
system to live by. As I said

Foucault, Consumerism, and Identity
Foucault, Consumerism, and Identity
Michel Foucault presents those revolutionary sorts of analyses that are rich not only for their content
but for their implications and novel methodological approach. Just beyond the surface of his works
lies such philosophical wealth that one can be overwhelmed by considerations of which vein to mine
first, and what to make of the elements therefrom extracted. I ve broken earth in several attractive sites

Since the average person could not take themselves as an object, they had to rely on that Other who
does have himself as object (the sovereign) to tell them who they are, and what their relationship is to
him, since he is capable of knowing both at once, and thus of comparing. The Classical age saw an
increased interest by the ruling classes, and the emerging intellectual class,2[2] in the affairs of the
productive classes. The realisation of the significance of microphysical power is parallelled by the
establishment of the subject as the final authority on belief (Luther), the foundation of knowledge
(Descartes), and the establisher of rights (Locke). These ideas gave power to masses who had hitherto
seen themselves as having none (hardly having seen themselves at all), and fuelled the Age of
Revolutions. The Classical discovery of the individual led, by the Romantic period, to its exaltation.
The belief in individual power and rights created a demand not only for access to the privileges
previously enjoyed only by the elite (such as say in the direction of society), but also for comparable
narrative distinctiveness.
As the romantics idealised the life of peasants, and socialists proclaimed the rights of workers,
common folk began to see their images in culture. Individual enshrinement remained the

Introduction
The old generation of electrical power grid has taken care of our needs in the past. However, as our
world progress technologically, so do the expectations from different infrastructures around us. Smart
grid is an initiative to completely restructure the electrical power grid to meet the current and future
requirements of its clients. Upgrading our electrical power grid could bring novel security
vulnerabilities into the system. Thus, security is one of the key parts in smart grid technology. Smart
grid technology also puts more reliability demands on WAN (wide area network) infrastructures. [1]
A smart grid is an intelligent electricity network that integrates the actions of all users connected to it
and makes use of innovative information, control, and communication technologies to save energy, cut
cost, and raise reliability and transparency. The smart grid is an upgrade to the current electrical power
structure. Meaning, on top of the functionality of our existing power system, it has upgraded with
some novel specifications. These new features adds more vulnerability to the system. [2]
Smart grid is mainly composed of six basic systems: power generation system, distribution system,
transmission network, data management and processing system, smart metering system, and customer
information system. The network architecture of smart grid

Sds Page (Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Polyacrylamide Gel...
Gel electrophoresis is a routine laboratory procedure in biochemical studies that takes advantage of a
protein s amphoteric nature to determine its molecular weight and charge by running the sample
through a gel matrix under the influence of an electrically charged field. A popular example of gel
electrophoresis is Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide electrophoresis or SDS PAGE which has
been used in this experiment to supposedly determine albumin and casein s molecular weights
respectively. The system used in gel electrophoresis consists of 3 major parts: a stationary phase, a
mobile phase) and an electrical power supply.
In SDS PAGE the polyacrylamide gel serves as the stationary phase, the buffer (Tris HCl in this case)
as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand, the Tris HCl buffer and deionized water provides the system its shape since the
polyacrylamide complex is just a thin film of interlocking polymer fibers without any liquid to trap
within.
Polyacrylamide gels are usually preferred over other gel types such as agarose in protein
electrophoresis because of various benefits such as its ability to be cast in various pore sizes which
provides options for the researchers who observe protein samples with various Kda s depending on
how separated they aim the bands to be or how well the sample is sieved. It is also preferred because
of its charge neutrality upon setting as it does not interfere with the electrophoresis which is highly
reliant on the sample and the surrounding s charges within the system. Lastly, the gel itself is colorless
and protein stains do not adhere to the gel so there will be minimal problems with unnecessary stains
that aren t from the staining solution.
APS and TEMED was used to initiate the binding of acrylamide to bisacrylamide via a vinyl addition
reaction where TEMED catalyzes the decomposition of APS into free sulfide molecules which then
initiates the formation of the polyacrylamide complex.
Sodium dodecyl sulfate or SDS is a protein denaturant that destroys weak interactions within the
protein molecule which unfolds it

Managing Diversity In Fire Department
Managing diversity is one of the hardest tasks for the modern fire service manager to accomplish.
Firstly the manager is required by Title VII and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to
provide an employment pattern that matches the demographic makeup of the particular community.
Can a manager in the modern fire service manage a diversity program that truly manages diversity
instead of simply trying to increase the numbers and percentages of minority workers in their fire
department? Diversity encompasses a very wide spectrum ranging from cultural to subcultural
categories, and it also includes individual or personal traits. Viewpoints on how diversity affects today
s fire department vary greatly from the idea of instigating hardship

De-Escalation Case Study
Some factors to consider when using the de escalation is knowing where the individual stands and
seeing if it s appropriate at that time.

During any crisis, it is important to know where to start because
if a professional is tempting to use the de escalation process and the client is not stable enough, then it
could cause more harm than good. A professional including a police officer or counselor needs to
know the client before getting in depth in a crisis. For example, if a police officer is tempting to use
the de escalation method on a individual, and they do not know the client then the client is not gonna
be comfortable or let emotions/feelings out. The professional also needs to know the background and
history of the client because

The first Crusades were ordered by Pope Urban II. The Crusades were a series of military Christians
and Muslims. They fought over the holy land of Jerusalem. It took place in Middle East between 1095
and 1291. The Crusades were caused primarily by the desire for political and economical gain rather
than religious devotion. Some reasons for the crusades were based off religion. Both Christians and
Muslims consider Jerusalem a holy place. Both also wanted control of the city because it would please
their god. Pope Urban II should defend their fellow brethren in the East. Even though Eastern

The Giver Tone
What would happen if you could not make your own choices? In Lois Lowry s The Giver, the
community does not get the choice of how they live. Jonas was one of the only different people in the
community and he worked with the Giver to receive the community s memories. After learning about
all the memories kept from the people in the community, Jonas decides to release his knowledge so
everyone can know the truth. The truth changed the way people thought and help them realize what
they were doing when they did not know the truth. The theme of this book is that it is important to be
able to make your own choices and create your own memories. This is shown through tone,
characterization, and the plot.
First, The Giver is shown through tone because of the way they talk to each other. The tone of the way
they talk to each other is very serious. For example Jonas s mom says precision of language, when
Jonas s mom says that it makes the book more serious and shows that they do not get the choice of

The Dark Stories By Sylvia Plath
Do you ever wish you could take the worst moment of your life and experience it like it never
happened? In Belzhar by Meg Wolitzer that is exactly what happened to five teenagers. These teens
attended the Wooden Barn a school for the fragile. Casey, Sierra, Griffin, Marc, and Jam were all
chosen to be in an odd class, Special Topics English. Mrs. Quenell their teacher had chosen the dark
stories by Sylvia Plath the only author they were going to read the semester. When the students finally
began to use their journals they were given, they began to experience this state of Belzhar. The
students were whisked back to the time of their life where they had not experienced their trauma. Each
of these students went through something like Sylvia Plath that differentiated them from normal teens
but because of Belzhar they were healed emotionally. Sierra s brother was missing, Jam s boyfriend
had died, and Casey is paralyzed but they got through it thanks to Belzhar. Sierra Stokes is from
Washington, DC and loves her little brother André. One night he went to the store to buy and never
returned. Sierra s family was devastated and Sierra was constantly contacting the detective even three

Why Is The Death Penalty Right Or Wrong
Look into the mirror and know, you could be next. A criminal could walk through your door at any
moment, and do God awful things to you. The death penalty is our greatest form of fear; it might scare
a criminal not to viciously commit murder. Only 31 states have the death penalty, although all states
should have it (ProCon). Why should a killer be allowed to sit in prison, living, while their victims are
dead? On this issue, people who oppose the death penalty say that the death penalty is inhumane
(Zakeri). Although I understand their point of view, this is ultimately a question of right or wrong.
Religion, financial strain on taxpayers, and victim s rights, are just a few of the reasons that capital
punishment should be supported. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is unconditionally true. Furthermore, if a man meticulously plans out a murder, commits it, then
he should be put to death. Capital Punishment is used to put cold blooded psychopaths away, and to
have their lives taken away. Taxpayers on average pay about $90,000 more per year for each prisoner
on death row (Death Penalty Information Center). Kansas legislators found that death penalty cases
cost citizens about $1.26 million per case (Amnesty International). In Maryland, the average cost of a
case is $3 million (Death Penalty Information Center). However some people argue that it is alright
for us to pay taxes on murderers, they are clearly wrong; I protest that we should not pay taxes on
killers, because our money could go to better things such as, schools. highways, and medicine

Mens Rea Essay
n criminal law, the mens rea refers to the defendant s state of mind at the time of their crime and there
are several levels reflecting the need to have a particular mens rea for the offence committed. For
example, in murder or a S:18 offence in the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, the mens rea
present must be that of specific intent, which is where the defendant desired that particular outcome of
their actions. However, it was held in R v Cunningham 1982, that the intention to cause serious harm
was enough to satisfy the mens rea for murder. This shows that, where murder cases are concerned,
that it is relatively easy to prove the required mens rea and in doing so the concept of fault is often
satisfied. This is once again shown in oblique ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the original hearing, Ahluwalia was convicted of murder as the law on provocation required the
loss of self control to be immediate, not premeditated and this may have been the case as the
defendant waited for her husband to sleep before murdering him. However, the law has since
developed and provocation now recognises battered woman s syndrome and the slow burn effect it
may cause. If this is the case, then surely a defendant in such a situation cannot face the full wrath of
fault when much of what surrounded the killing was not out of their choice. Even though the actus
reus and mens rea in this case, and also similar cases of R v Duffy 1949 and R v Thornton 1992, were
present, the law s introduction of a Domestic Violence Bill is perhaps confirmation that the concept of
fault can only be appropriately applied when the full circumstances are looked at. This signifies the
importance of defences, as it is here that the law can decide whether or not a person is to blame for
their actions and to what extent it was their fault that the actus reus and mens rea were

Downward Social Reflection Theory
The social comparison theory suggests people learn their abilities and flaws by comparing themselves
to other people (Weiten, 2015, pg, 171). We compare ourselves with other who are similar on to our
characteristics or self worth. We compare ourselves to others when there is no influenced by personal
feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts. When I receive an average grade in a class,
I compare myself to a student received an A. This motivates me to look up to that classmate as a
mentor to enhance myself. It is important to have the attitude that you are cable and you can improve
rather than the opposite, I am unable and I can not improve. This method is called the upward social
comparison, which can make us feel worse or they inspire us to do better (Weiten, 2015, pg, 171). I
am guilty of downward social comparison when I receive a bad grade (C) on a test. If the teacher
announced that half the class failed, my mind would be at ease. Downward social comparison can
make us feel better (Weiten, 2015, pg, 171). The reference groups that I compare my academic
performance with is my fellow colleagues. Weiten, W., Dunn, D., Hammer, E. Y. (2018). Psychology
applied to modern life: adjustment in the 21st century. Boston, MA: Cengage Learning. The test

History And Struggles Of Puerto Rican People
I will bring awareness to the history and struggles of the Puerto Rican people. I will relate the
struggles of not being recognized in society, being discriminated against, and not being able to vote
unless living in the states despite the fact we are born United States citizens. These conditions are
identical to what Zinn states happened to slaves in his book, A People History of the United States.
(Chapter 6) I will also speak on the advancements Puerto Ricans have made today as compared to 40
years ago, and how it has influenced me today as a Puerto Rican women. Puerto Rico is a small island
in the Caribbean. It was first settled around 1000 A.D. by the Taino Indians and called Borinquen. In
1493, Christopher Columbus claimed it for Spain but it wasn t until the arrival of Juan Ponce de Leon
in 1508 that Spain began to colonize and rule over the land and its native people. The Taino Indians
believed the Spanish colonizers had divine powers and to test their theory they captured a Spaniard
and drowned him. It is said that they watched him for several days until they were sure he was dead.
When they learned that the Spanish were mortal, they revolted against them but with no success. As
punishment, Ponce De Leon ordered 6,000 shot; survivors fled the mountains or left the island. After
being settled by Spain and being enslaved, the native population was nearly wiped out by disease and
war. The Spanish then began brining African slaves to the island to replace the Indian

The Justice Theatre At A Young Age
The Justice Theatre presentation #2 that we watched in the gym was very interesting and it gave a
huge example of the gang lifestyle. We focus on the fun things of joining a gang and we don t
understand the negative side. When you do notice the negative side, you might feel like you have no
hope for the future to what you have chosen. Gang members lead very dangerous lives. Discrimination
attitudes are behind some gang violence. Joining a gang at a young age is a big problem itself. Gang
members are often involved to violence, drugs and crime. Also, once a gang member joins it can be
very difficult for them to get out of the gang. Gangs affect communities as well because violence can
often lead to innocent people being injured or killed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Harjit started to tell his story of how he got involved with all this. He started it by saying that when he

other things and when Harjit asked where they got that cool car, the person said that you just have to
do tiny tasks in return of cool cars, money, and other expensive things. When the other person (gang

Utilitarian Equality And Equality
What is equality? If one man in a room has five dollars and another man in the same room has fifty
dollars are we supposed to hold a gun to the temple of the man with fifty dollars in order to force him
into giving the man with five dollars some of his wealth? This is type of consequentialist or utilitarian
equality of outcome that was supported by some Socialist political economists of the nineteenth and
twentieth century such as Marx and Engels who would dare to go even farther in advocating for the
abolition and confiscation of property on top of a heavy graduated income tax (Marx 18). Other
theorists from the Enlightenment that were more liberally inclined such as Adam Smith and John
Locke advocated for a more deontologist framework where some would consider equal opportunity
takes precedent. This can most notably be seen through Smith when he called for an exact
administration of justice, and the creation and maintenance of public institutions that would be
advantageous for society as a whole (Smith Lecture). In other words, a just infrastructure that would
be just for all men, (women still did not possess the same rights as men at this time) in which they
hoped gave citizens an equal shot at the market and life. Bakunin, on the other hand, had similar views
as Smith in regards to equality but still maintained collectivist undertones in his writings. Bakunin
believed that freedom should be the basis of equality and that freedom of each is therefore realizable

Business Case And Moral Case Justification For Diversity...
Organisations have sought out to have a more diverse workforce, as it is claimed to increase
organisational effectiveness. A team with individuals from different social group, personalities, values
and beliefs, and etcetera, when managed well, can be an asset to the organisation. More often than not,
there will be some sort of discrimination in the workplace, especially with a very diverse workforce.
Therefore, with proper training and benefits to ensure the development of these employees, and
legislation and policy to ensure equality and reduce discrimination within the workforce, it can drive
competitive advantage and organisational profit. When looking at diversity in the workforce, the
business case and the moral case justification are often necessary. The following paragraphs will talk
more about the business case and moral case, and the linkages between them, as well as the theories
and conceptual frameworks for the business and moral cases justification for diversity management in
organisations.
The business case for diversity is often expressed in terms of managing diversity (Urwin et al. 2013).
It is defined as managing the diversity in the workforce to reduce or eradicate the discrimination
amongst the employees in the workplace. From the business case perspective, the main focus will
usually be on equality practices, or diverse workforce that will possibly benefit the organisation. Thus,
from the business case perspective, organisations will recruit and select

Characteristics Of Queen Hatshepsut
Ancient Egypt s history is full of stories that tell about the many powerful leaders. Two such leaders
are particularly noteworthy for their contribution to Egypt s success. First, we have Queen Hatshepsut,
who was a pharaoh for twenty two years. She was the first woman to hold the title of Pharaoh in
Egypt. Ramses II was also a successful leader. He reigned for 60+ years with many accomplishments.
This essay will attempt to determine who the better Pharaoh was. To do so I looked at factors such as
their leadership, problem solving skills, and legacy. I have concluded that Hatshepsut was the better
Pharaoh.
Queen Hatshepsut demonstrated great leadership during her reign. She was confident, utilized her
strengths, and motivated others that came after her. These qualities drove her to success and her
accomplishments are all proof. Hatshepsut exceeded people s expectations of women in power. She
proved her dedication to the throne by dressing as a male. Dressing as a male illustrated her
confidence and showed the effect she had on society.
Hatshepsut built the wealth of the eighteenth dynasty by developing trade connections. Not only that
but she expanded Egypt s borders through the use of military campaigns. additionally, she undertook
ambitious building projects and restored old temples. She did this all while avoiding war when she
could. Hatshepsut focused on trade and economic. This is in comparison to Ramses who concentrated
on expanding Egypt through warfare. Thus,

Summary Of Balthasar And Feste
Balthasar and Feste fulfill the same role of paid entertainers that are kept around to make the nobility
laugh. This role seems like one that Shakespeare used simply to continue the progression of the play.
This argument is mostly true with Balthasar who we learn very little about and who appears only
when the plot necessitates it. On the other hand, Feste is a much more complex and central character.
Shakespeare uses Feste to insert his own commentary about the play and the characters in it. Feste
displays more cynicism and bitterness than other characters and his songs do not always align with the
tone of the play. With Balthasar and Feste, Shakespeare takes two characters that fulfill the same role
and has used them in entirely different ways to reach the goals he wants to achieve.
Balthasar s first appearance is in the palace orchard where Benedick is hiding. He sings a song about
men being unfaithful, Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more, Men were deceivers ever, (2.3.blank blank).
Don Pedro and Claudio are using Balthasar to set up their conversation about Beatrice s supposed love
for Benedick. They have Balthasar sing about men being unfaithful which leads into their
conversation about Benedick being too prideful for Beatrice (lines lines). Balthasar s song obviously
irritates Benedick, an he had been a dog that should have howled thus, they would have hanged him
(2.3.blank blank). The choice of song is intentional but not by Balthasar, but instead by Pedro and

The Theme of Decadence in the Picture of Dorian Grey by...
The theme of decadence in The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde Staring from the definition
found in the dictionary, the decadence is a literary movement especially of late 19th century France
and England characterized by refined aestheticism, artifice, and the quest for new sensations. [1] In
decadence, important is not necessarily what is seen, but the hermeneutics: what man feels when he
sees the creative result of this feeling. It is the current that requires a co operation from the public to
the artistic work for the purposes of re creation. The image proposed by the decadents is a violent one,
an image that shocks by having a fascinating and terrifying power. It is a image that stimulates and

His conception is hedeonistic. If Basil is the art creator, the picture s creator, Lord Henry is the creator
of Dorian s new aspect. The experience of the sin is finished by killing his friend, Basil Hallward. His
act does not stirs remorse, his only concern being to erase the traces in order to avoid getting
discovered. His diabolism can be compared to the one of Des Esseintes , which attempts to transform
a young man, Auguste Langlois, into an assassin, through vice, but the difference is that the Huysmans
s character has not the power to commit a murder himself. The murder is followed by the destruction
of the portrait. A strong element related to the decadent movement is the dandyism, the social
phenomenon, meaning a man who places particular importance upon physical appearance, refined
language, and leisurely hobbies, pursued with the appearance of nonchalance in a cult of Self.[5] A
first determination of dandyism is shown when old Lord Fermor says to his nephew Henry Wotton
Well, Harry, what brings you out so early? I thought you dandies never got up till two, and were not
visible till five. [6] Lord Henry Wotton is fully a dandy, most of the qualities found at him. His

Andrew Jackson s Characterization Of The Age Of Jackson
Andrew Jackson first had a military career that evolved into a political career in the Age of Jackson.
The Age of Jackson is an accurate characterization of the era between 1815 and 1845, because Jackson
dominated the political sphere in the US. He was the dominant political figure that was almost as
influential and as representative as Martin Van Buren. Van Buren was the only politician that could
challenge Andrew Jackson in politics, because Jackson s characterization embodied the views held in
the first 40 years of the early 1800s.
Does that seem an apt characterization?
Jackson maintained his image as a dominant figure as president from 1828 to 1837 when he fought for
southerners as he garnered the attention of Whigs to preserve the Union. Jackson is regarded as a
national hero that excelled in military and politics. Examples of this accurate characterization are his
title as the Indian Fighter and his actions as President of the United States. In The Battle of New
Orleans and Seminole Wars. His actions, while extremely xenophobic and racist, were revered by the
general public, but he is still seen as a national historical figure. He had a decisive victory over the
British in the Battle of New Orleans when he prevented the British from taking the Louisiana
Purchase despite being outnumbered by around 10,000 troops. He was an astute militarily strategist
that anticipated and fended off British at the Siege of Fort St. Philip in a critical point of the Battle of

Women In The Tang Dynasty
Throughout the long history of mankind, women s status has been through a huge historical evolution.
Ancient Chinese feminism is obviously more noticeable than other cultures due to its feudal and
conservative society. Yuan Zhen, who is a famous Chinese writer and politician in Tang Dynasty, has
written one of the greatest masterpieces in that time period called The Story of Yingying. In the story,
he reflects the awakening of feminism in the Tang Dynasty by describing the love tragedy about
Zhang and Cui Yingying as well. However, there are a lot of different distinctions on people s
opinions on this story, and many people believe that Cui Yingying is just simply a woman who does
not know how to protect or respect herself. As time goes by, people start to change their views as

This event makes the status of women improved a lot, and it also leads a lot of litterateurs to start

works, Women in the Tang Dynasty can now fully displayed their confidence and beauty. Feminism is
the belief that woman have equal political, social, sexual, love, intellectual and economic rights to
men (Holdsworth8). Though Yingying is not completely fitted to the whole standards, but she has
chased her love and what she does has become a progress of awakening feminism. Also her bold act to
pursue their love becomes a symbol of the awakening of feminism. The author Yuan Zhen describes
Yingying as expressions of either joy or misery seldom showed on her face (1055). This is an

Students Should Be Taught In Schools
With the results of the wonderful benefits it provides, it brings a question to mind; what do these
teaching methods do that benefit our education? As a future educator and being in a school where
these practices and techniques have been implemented, to me I feel that this teaching style has a huge
impacted on how students should be taught. I believe that this trend should be continued to be used in
all schools because this process really dives into the fundamentals of teaching. It also gets the students
involved with their education and in my opinion, that creates an environment where the students can
take control of their learning and they can be accountable for their education. I believe some schools

academics. Most importantly, they actually enjoy school, doing their coursework, and seeing their

students, and parents by creating an inclusive atmosphere in which children can learn and thrive
(Badalaty). From Gina Badalaty s experience, it is easy to see that the teaching approach in which
schools use to promote learning is benefiting children in many ways. Students with dyslexia and
dyscalculia also can benefit immensely from the responsive teaching approach. Dyslexic students can
benefit from active teaching since the teacher presents first and then explains what was just presented.
With this students with dyslexia have more time to organize, prioritize and filter new information
(Stevens). Students with dyscalculia can really benefit from the student practice, instructor guided part
of responsive teaching. Here students with dyscalculia can use manipulatives, have more space to
write out problems and even be able to talk out the problem (Morin). Students with ADHD can also
benefit from this learning style. Teachers that have students with ADHD can simplify the instructions
and can post classroom rules on the wall so it is very clear what is expected of them (Weaver

Mise-en-Scene in Napoleon Dynamite Essay
Mise en Scene in Napoleon Dynamite
In Napoleon Dynamite (Jared Hess, 2004), the character known as Napoleon Dynamite (Jon Heder) is
quite a unique fellow. His quirkiness and eccentricity are what make him as a character; they are the
primary traits of his personality. Keep in mind, however, that he is not the only odd character in the
film, but he has his own peerless way of defining himself separate from any other character(s). This
effect is achieved through certain cinematic techniques that director Jared Hess utilizes in order to
bring out Napoleon s persona in ways other than simply guessing who he really is. Rather, these
techniques explicitly imply certain character traits; they are like clues that allow one to see the ...

Additionally, considerable portion of the significant sound in the film occurs in the music. The most
blatant effect of the music is the cheesy MIDI arrangements. These outdated compositions portray the
tackiness of Napoleon; he and the music are clearly out of style. One of the crudest examples of this is
when Napoleon buys his suit; the muzak in the background is as unbearably corny as Napoleon s taste
in clothing. Albeit music is a fundamental factor in Napoleon Dynamite, it is not the only element of
sound that is relevant.
The sound effects in the film also give clues as to what kind of person Napoleon really is. One
supporting example is when he is eating tots in the middle of class. The unnecessarily loud crunching
noise portrays his manifest lack of craftiness and style. There was one audio technique, however, that
was extremely puzzling. In every scene inside a house, there is a very subtle background of birds
chirping. This emphasizes the fact that Napoleon lives a rural community, rather than a busy suburb or
city setting. This sound is extremely understated, however, and is obviously intended to be a
subconscious feature to the viewer.
Napoleon uses some of his own characteristic sounds in the film to facilitate who he is. As a matter of
fact, the first sound he makes in the movie is long, depressed sigh when he sees the school bus
approaching. This

The Remains Of The Day By Kazuo Ishiguro And The Play...
Our most basic memory is the meaning of the word itself. When that word is flashed in front of us, our
minds immediately conclude that a memory is a recollection of a past event. But, out of the millions of
long and short term memories in the archives of our brains, what makes us remember specific events
and forget others? To what extent do memories serve as a guideline to the type of personality and
characteristics an individual displays? In the novel The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro and the
play Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, memories are used for the understanding of main
characters. Ishiguro uses memories to narrate Stevens past working for royalty and his struggle to
transition into the modern world. Miller uses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He will always try to live up to the high standards his father set for himself as he did that night. In
Death of a Salesman Willy is abandoned by his father at a very young age as well as his brother Ben
who leaves for Alaska where he makes a fortune. In addition, Willy and his son Biff are constantly in
dispute over Willy s opinion that Biff lacks a real job and has no purpose to his life. At Frank s
Chophouse, when Biff returns from an interview with a potential employer, Willy is expecting good
news. As the two go back and forth arguing and not listening to each other, Willy begins to ramble and
has a flashback from the past. Unaware of his surrounding and the conversation he is presently in, he
says, No, no! You had to go and flunk math! ... If you hadn t flunked you d ve been set by now!
(Miller 65) Willy is remembering the fact that Biff was not able to graduate high school because he
failed his math class. Willy, in distress, hurries into the bathroom and continues to babble while his
two sons, Biff and Happy, leave the restaurant abandoning their father. This memory that Willy recalls
shows that he feels responsible for his son s failure and will never forget the reason Biff did not end up
successful which ultimately led to the abandonment of father by son.
When reflecting on the past a sense of regret arises when feelings of missed opportunities are thought
of. In The Remains of the Day Stevens comes to the realization that he missed an opportunity

  • 2. Charlie Fish Use Of Foreshadowing In Death By Scrabble Charlie Fish s story Death by Scrabble is a suspenseful story about how much a husband wanted to kill his wife. Fish uses foreshadowing, red herring, and sensory imagery in his story. The use of these Art of Suspense techniques can inspire readers to continue to the end, wondering what will happen next. Foreshadowing is a common technique used in stories, whether it is fiction or nonfiction. In the story, Death by Scrabble, the author makes it that for every word played in the game, the word, in a way, comes true. When the husband plays ZAP, his wife gets an electric shock. As well as when he plays EXPLODES, the air conditioning unit explode[d] (Fish 2). The author hints that the wife is aware of what her husband is planning when she plays CAUTION as one of her words. When Fish writes about how much the husband wants to kill his wife, he writes: Maybe I should kill her, if only I had a D, then I could play MURDER (Fish 1). This leads us, the readers, to believe that the husband wants to kill his wife and is, in some way, excited to do so. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sensory imagery is used in almost all short stories to help readers imagine and picture what is going on. While I was reading the story, I could imagine the setting and what was going on. In the beginning of the story, the author mentions that It [is] a blistering hot Sunday afternoon (Fish ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The First Confiscation Act Of September 1862 With this knowledge Congress passed Major General Benjamin F. Butler quick thinking into a policy, the First Confiscation Act, in August of 1861 which stated that the federal government had authority to seize any property owned by the Confederates which included slaves. By March the following year, an Article of War was produced which prohibited any military or naval services from returning run away or fugitive slaves to their respective masters, nullifying the Fugitive Acts all together. When the Second Confiscation Act was announced in July of 1862 it declared forever free Confederate owned slaves who made their way to federal lines or who resided in rebellious territory that fell to federal forces (Luke and Smith 2014, 14). Also in the bill, was the legitimisation of the president to utilise persons of African descent in any way that he considered necessary and proper for the suppression of the rebellion (Luke and Smith 2014, 14). Thus the Militia Act of July 1862, which gave Lincoln carte blanche (Luke and Smith 2014, 14) to make use of black resources. Although these acts were issued with the intention of blacks serving as military labour it gave way to many possibilities. The first to act on these possibilities was Major General Jon C. Frémont, in August 1861, who emancipated the slaves of Missouri rebels. By late August, following him, but surpassing freeing slaves, Republican U.S. senator and brigadier general James H. Jim Lane, a Free Soiler and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Is Doing The Right Thing Wrong By David Montero Child Labor Your child is the person you have taken care of since birth. That does not change around the globe. What does change is how the child lives their life. Do they spend their evenings dancing to a popular tune bought on a $200 iPod, enough to buy food for a month for a poverty stricken family, or sewing the seams of shoes together so they can earn money, only for some child the same age to wear it once and forget about it. Would you stop buying these products just because they were made by someone around the age of your child? Do you really think you ll be helping them by not buying these products instead of donating to the nearest charity? People should not halt their consumption of products just because children were the manufacturers. Many children work in factories to help support their families. As Americans, we always say to help others in need, but when we find out children are working to support the family, we believe not buying the products made is beneficial and just when in reality it hurts the child. According to the article Is Doing the Right Thing Wrong? by David ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the contrary, the occupation of adolescents is not coming closer to an end but perhaps just farther away from factories. In actuality, the responsibility does not lie with the company but with the government, according to Is Doing the Right Thing Wrong? by David Montero. Why must we boycott the establishments instead of the régime? After all, the government is the force of action that allows child labor. If someone is to be punished for child labor, it should not be the companies nor should the retribution be preventing consumers from buying a certain brand. The issue should be handled politically and with the representative of the nation, not some basic corporation that happened to place its business in that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Effects Of Food On The Food Industry There are currently two types of food systems that exist in our food shed. TINA, which comes from Maggie Thatcher, who said, There Is No Alternative to global economy T I N A (Shuman, 2002). And LOIS, which stands for Local Ownership and Import Substitution (Shuman, 2002). TINA is the system that has been used for the pasted 60 to 70 years, and throughout that time the way we produced are food has become both productive and efficient; but it has also become destructive and unhealthy. In A TINA based food economy, food is either mass produced through the process of industrial farming or it is imported from other countries. These lead to adverse effects on the food, the environment and the economy. However, in a LOIS based food economy, food is produced locally through locally owned businesses, then the more you can minimize your vulnerability to nasty surprises, the more you can maximize your economic multiplier, and the more you can maximize tax proceeds to the public sector and the many good things that come from it. (Shuman, 2002). So in simpler terms the more you produce locally, the better local economies will be and if local economies have a large income then the nations income will increase by way of tax. Along with being good for our economy, LOIS has little to no adverse effect on our environment or health. Compared to TINA, LOIS looks like paradise, but just like every dream world, the LOIS system is currently an impossible system to live by. As I said ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since the average person could not take themselves as an object, they had to rely on that Other who does have himself as object (the sovereign) to tell them who they are, and what their relationship is to him, since he is capable of knowing both at once, and thus of comparing. The Classical age saw an increased interest by the ruling classes, and the emerging intellectual class,2[2] in the affairs of the productive classes. The realisation of the significance of microphysical power is parallelled by the establishment of the subject as the final authority on belief (Luther), the foundation of knowledge (Descartes), and the establisher of rights (Locke). These ideas gave power to masses who had hitherto seen themselves as having none (hardly having seen themselves at all), and fuelled the Age of Revolutions. The Classical discovery of the individual led, by the Romantic period, to its exaltation. The belief in individual power and rights created a demand not only for access to the privileges previously enjoyed only by the elite (such as say in the direction of society), but also for comparable narrative distinctiveness. As the romantics idealised the life of peasants, and socialists proclaimed the rights of workers, common folk began to see their images in culture. Individual enshrinement remained the ... Wireless Network Method Using Smart Grid Communications WIRELESS NETWORK METHOD USING IN SMART GRID COMMUNICATIONS Ehsan Dolatshahi Independent Study April 22, 2015 Introduction The old generation of electrical power grid has taken care of our needs in the past. However, as our world progress technologically, so do the expectations from different infrastructures around us. Smart grid is an initiative to completely restructure the electrical power grid to meet the current and future requirements of its clients. Upgrading our electrical power grid could bring novel security vulnerabilities into the system. Thus, security is one of the key parts in smart grid technology. Smart grid technology also puts more reliability demands on WAN (wide area network) infrastructures. [1] A smart grid is an intelligent electricity network that integrates the actions of all users connected to it and makes use of innovative information, control, and communication technologies to save energy, cut cost, and raise reliability and transparency. The smart grid is an upgrade to the current electrical power structure. Meaning, on top of the functionality of our existing power system, it has upgraded with some novel specifications. These new features adds more vulnerability to the system. [2] Smart grid is mainly composed of six basic systems: power generation system, distribution system, transmission network, data management and processing system, smart metering system, and customer information system. Gel electrophoresis is a routine laboratory procedure in biochemical studies that takes advantage of a protein s amphoteric nature to determine its molecular weight and charge by running the sample through a gel matrix under the influence of an electrically charged field. A popular example of gel electrophoresis is Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide electrophoresis or SDS PAGE which has been used in this experiment to supposedly determine albumin and casein s molecular weights respectively. On the other hand, the Tris HCl buffer and deionized water provides the system its shape since the polyacrylamide complex is just a thin film of interlocking polymer fibers without any liquid to trap within. Polyacrylamide gels are usually preferred over other gel types such as agarose in protein electrophoresis because of various benefits such as its ability to be cast in various pore sizes which provides options for the researchers who observe protein samples with various Kda s depending on how separated they aim the bands to be or how well the sample is sieved. It is also preferred because of its charge neutrality upon setting as it does not interfere with the electrophoresis which is highly reliant on the sample and the surrounding s charges within the system. Why should a killer be allowed to sit in prison, living, while their victims are dead? On this issue, people who oppose the death penalty say that the death penalty is inhumane (Zakeri). Kansas legislators found that death penalty cases cost citizens about $1.26 million per case (Amnesty International). In Maryland, the average cost of a case is $3 million (Death Penalty Information Center). Mens Rea Essay n criminal law, the mens rea refers to the defendant s state of mind at the time of their crime and there are several levels reflecting the need to have a particular mens rea for the offence committed. For example, in murder or a S:18 offence in the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, the mens rea present must be that of specific intent, which is where the defendant desired that particular outcome of their actions. However, it was held in R v Cunningham 1982, that the intention to cause serious harm was enough to satisfy the mens rea for murder. This shows that, where murder cases are concerned, that it is relatively easy to prove the required mens rea and in doing so the concept of fault is often satisfied. On the original hearing, Ahluwalia was convicted of murder as the law on provocation required the loss of self control to be immediate, not premeditated and this may have been the case as the defendant waited for her husband to sleep before murdering him. If this is the case, then surely a defendant in such a situation cannot face the full wrath of fault when much of what surrounded the killing was not out of their choice. Even though the actus reus and mens rea in this case, and also similar cases of R v Duffy 1949 and R v Thornton 1992, were present, the law s introduction of a Domestic Violence Bill is perhaps confirmation that the concept of fault can only be appropriately applied when the full circumstances are looked at. • 26. Utilitarian Equality And Equality What is equality? If one man in a room has five dollars and another man in the same room has fifty dollars are we supposed to hold a gun to the temple of the man with fifty dollars in order to force him into giving the man with five dollars some of his wealth? This is type of consequentialist or utilitarian equality of outcome that was supported by some Socialist political economists of the nineteenth and twentieth century such as Marx and Engels who would dare to go even farther in advocating for the abolition and confiscation of property on top of a heavy graduated income tax (Marx 18). Other theorists from the Enlightenment that were more liberally inclined such as Adam Smith and John Locke advocated for a more deontologist framework where some would consider equal opportunity takes precedent. This can most notably be seen through Smith when he called for an exact administration of justice, and the creation and maintenance of public institutions that would be advantageous for society as a whole (Smith Lecture). In other words, a just infrastructure that would be just for all men, (women still did not possess the same rights as men at this time) in which they hoped gave citizens an equal shot at the market and life. Bakunin, on the other hand, had similar views as Smith in regards to equality but still maintained collectivist undertones in his writings. Two such leaders are particularly noteworthy for their contribution to Egypt s success. First, we have Queen Hatshepsut, who was a pharaoh for twenty two years. She was the first woman to hold the title of Pharaoh in Egypt. Ramses II was also a successful leader. He reigned for 60+ years with many accomplishments. This essay will attempt to determine who the better Pharaoh was. To do so I looked at factors such as their leadership, problem solving skills, and legacy. I have concluded that Hatshepsut was the better Pharaoh. Queen Hatshepsut demonstrated great leadership during her reign. She was confident, utilized her strengths, and motivated others that came after her. These qualities drove her to success and her accomplishments are all proof. Hatshepsut exceeded people s expectations of women in power. She proved her dedication to the throne by dressing as a male. Dressing as a male illustrated her confidence and showed the effect she had on society. Hatshepsut built the wealth of the eighteenth dynasty by developing trade connections. Not only that but she expanded Egypt s borders through the use of military campaigns. additionally, she undertook ambitious building projects and restored old temples. She did this all while avoiding war when she could. Hatshepsut focused on trade and economic. This is in comparison to Ramses who concentrated on expanding Egypt through warfare. Thus, ... • 33. Summary Of Balthasar And Feste Balthasar and Feste fulfill the same role of paid entertainers that are kept around to make the nobility laugh. This role seems like one that Shakespeare used simply to continue the progression of the play. This argument is mostly true with Balthasar who we learn very little about and who appears only when the plot necessitates it. On the other hand, Feste is a much more complex and central character. Shakespeare uses Feste to insert his own commentary about the play and the characters in it. Feste displays more cynicism and bitterness than other characters and his songs do not always align with the tone of the play. With Balthasar and Feste, Shakespeare takes two characters that fulfill the same role and has used them in entirely different ways to reach the goals he wants to achieve. Balthasar s first appearance is in the palace orchard where Benedick is hiding. He sings a song about men being unfaithful, Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more, Men were deceivers ever, (2.3.blank blank). Don Pedro and Claudio are using Balthasar to set up their conversation about Beatrice s supposed love for Benedick. They have Balthasar sing about men being unfaithful which leads into their conversation about Benedick being too prideful for Beatrice (lines lines). Balthasar s song obviously irritates Benedick, an he had been a dog that should have howled thus, they would have hanged him (2.3.blank blank). The theme of decadence in The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde Staring from the definition found in the dictionary, the decadence is a literary movement especially of late 19th century France and England characterized by refined aestheticism, artifice, and the quest for new sensations. [1] In decadence, important is not necessarily what is seen, but the hermeneutics: what man feels when he sees the creative result of this feeling. It is the current that requires a co operation from the public to the artistic work for the purposes of re creation. The experience of the sin is finished by killing his friend, Basil Hallward. His act does not stirs remorse, his only concern being to erase the traces in order to avoid getting discovered. His diabolism can be compared to the one of Des Esseintes , which attempts to transform a young man, Auguste Langlois, into an assassin, through vice, but the difference is that the Huysmans s character has not the power to commit a murder himself. The murder is followed by the destruction of the portrait. A strong element related to the decadent movement is the dandyism, the social phenomenon, meaning a man who places particular importance upon physical appearance, refined language, and leisurely hobbies, pursued with the appearance of nonchalance in a cult of Self.[5] A first determination of dandyism is shown when old Lord Fermor says to his nephew Henry Wotton Well, Harry, what brings you out so early? • 38. Andrew Jackson s Characterization Of The Age Of Jackson Andrew Jackson first had a military career that evolved into a political career in the Age of Jackson. The Age of Jackson is an accurate characterization of the era between 1815 and 1845, because Jackson dominated the political sphere in the US. He was the dominant political figure that was almost as influential and as representative as Martin Van Buren. Van Buren was the only politician that could challenge Andrew Jackson in politics, because Jackson s characterization embodied the views held in the first 40 years of the early 1800s. Does that seem an apt characterization? Jackson maintained his image as a dominant figure as president from 1828 to 1837 when he fought for southerners as he garnered the attention of Whigs to preserve the Union. Jackson is regarded as a national hero that excelled in military and politics. Examples of this accurate characterization are his title as the Indian Fighter and his actions as President of the United States. In The Battle of New Orleans and Seminole Wars. His actions, while extremely xenophobic and racist, were revered by the general public, but he is still seen as a national historical figure. He had a decisive victory over the British in the Battle of New Orleans when he prevented the British from taking the Louisiana Purchase despite being outnumbered by around 10,000 troops. His quirkiness and eccentricity are what make him as a character; they are the primary traits of his personality. Keep in mind, however, that he is not the only odd character in the film, but he has his own peerless way of defining himself separate from any other character(s). Albeit music is a fundamental factor in Napoleon Dynamite, it is not the only element of sound that is relevant. The sound effects in the film also give clues as to what kind of person Napoleon really is. One supporting example is when he is eating tots in the middle of class. The unnecessarily loud crunching noise portrays his manifest lack of craftiness and style. There was one audio technique, however, that was extremely puzzling. In every scene inside a house, there is a very subtle background of birds chirping. This emphasizes the fact that Napoleon lives a rural community, rather than a busy suburb or city setting. This sound is extremely understated, however, and is obviously intended to be a subconscious feature to the viewer.
