Social And Cultural Groups Become A Key Tool For Harmony...
Introduction
Since the 1990s the steady rise of the Internet has facilitated many avenues for change in our
contemporary world. Not least contributing to an ease in travel and communication which could well
give the impression of a globalscape constructed . with very few boundaries. A glance at any Western
World news source will undoubtedly report on the problem of immigration, as though Europe is under
siege by scores of deterritorialized people and transmigrants who have exploited the fluid boundaries
of postmodern hyperspace. It is in this area of social conflict that the discipline of anthropology best
serves as a sort of practical philosophy; examining the social queries of humanity, alongside

Borders of life and lands Gregory
Boca Chica is municipality of the Dominican Republic, located upon the island of Hispaniola in the
Gulf of Chiriquí. The history of conflict between the Dominican side of the island (influenced by
Spanish colonial rule) and the Western Haitian side is long standing, dating back to the 1880 s. Upon
the modern day landscape there is an imaginary line which divides Hispaniola into a land of two
countries. One side of which is Haiti and the other the Dominican Republic. It is on the Dominican
side where Gregory focuses his ethnography.
Through anecdotal interviews bureaucratic and social borders are described, which not only exclude
and disempower the Haitian residents of the country, but which also also alienate citizens of
Dominican descent due to their financial state. Dominican parents are required to register the birth of a
child at office of Civil Registry so as to be issued with a birth certificate. When the child reaches the
age of eighteen, this certificate can than be exchanged for an adult cédula , which is required for
voting, securing formal employment and obtaining licenses and other documents. However, many
parents, especially those in rural areas, may delay or neglect registering their children s birth, through
oversight, ignorance, or lack of resources to travel or to pay the required taxes (Gregory 2007:36). As

Diversity In New York City Essay
The busy streets of New York City, filled with skyscrapers and food carts is the city that I grew up in.
As an immigrant, New York City is one of the greatest cities to live and grow in. From it s unlimited
opportunities to the multicultural population, it has created a whole new society consisted of
integration amongst different people.
One aspect that makes New York City exciting to me is the diversity of the people. I came to the
United States as an immigrant and residing in New York City makes me feel as if I was home. I
believe that s how many immigrants feel when they move to New York City. The reason for the
comfort is the fact that there are people just like them, in culture and in similar situations. As more
immigrants reside in New York City, there is a greater mix of people that allows diversity to occur.
When I lived in Chinatown, everyone spoke chinese which made me feel at home. However, when I
moved to Brooklyn, an avenue down from where I live was full of Hispanics. I was different but I

There is a wide variety of food that could be found in New York City, from Chinese food to Mexican
food, from Japanese food to Italian food. Everything is located in the city and it takes just minutes to
get from one cuisine to the next. With different foods from different culture, it allows people to gain a
different perspective on food. To continue, due to the diversity in food, there has been emergence of
new foods, foods that combines different cultures. For example, sushi burger became a hit when it was
first created. This food, is a mix of Japanese and American cuisine. Another example is the Mac and
Cheese Spring Roll. This is a fusion of classic Chinese and American food. This shows how new food
creations have emerged because they combine elements from different cultures. Diversity is a factor to
this phenomenon and it is also what makes New York City

The Volcanic Eruption Of Volcanoes
Geologic Processes
Volcanoes are one of the most beautiful and yet destructive forces naturally occurring on our planet.
As the Earth s population continues to grow, more people move closer and closer to volcanoes.
Currently, an estimated 500 million people from Japan to Indonesia, and from Italy to Oregon, live
near active volcanoes. Each year, approximately 70 volcanoes will erupt, and usually at least once
every ten years, there will be a large volcanic eruption that puts the people living both near and far in
danger (Lutgens Tarbuck, 2005).
As populations continue to increase and more people are attracted to the beauty surrounding these
areas, the number of people choosing to beauty of an area over the known dangers of living ... Show

While we typically think of the pressure being released in a dramatic eruption from a volcanic
mountain that has been formed, the pressure can also be released as magma quietly escapes through
fissures, or cracks within the ground near the volcano. This process is referred to as fissure eruption.
Once the magma is released from the volcano, it is called lava. Fissure eruptions can occur over a
wide area, but over a few hours or days, they typically become a central vent from which the pressure
will continue to be released. Occasionally, lava will flow back into the ground by pouring into a crack
or an open eruptive fissure, a process called drainback. Lava can also flow back into the same fissure
from which it erupted (Krock, 2002). Regardless of where the lava flows, the change in the terrain is
called a lava plateau. These lava plateaus can be relatively small or very large. For example, the
Columbia plateau covers an area more than 150,000 square kilometers and extends over the states of
Washington, Idaho and Oregon (Landscape America, n.d.).
Two materials make up a volcanic eruption: lava and ash. However, each volcano can have different
proportions of lava to ash. Volcanoes in Hawaii and the Galapagos are mostly lava (greater than 95%)
with just a small (less than 5%) ash, typically in the form of cinder (Oregon State University, n.d.).
Other volcanoes may have more cinder ash than lava.

Comparing Cinderella And Cinderella
Traditionally fairytales have morals for their audiences. Throughout time, these stories develop themes
and ideas that allow readers to discover their purpose. These versions let the audience envision the
story from a newer perspective. Modified versions reveal the underlying cause of the storyline and its
characters. It is clear that The Little Glass Slipper published by Charles Perrault in 1697 and
Cinderella published by Brothers Grimm in 1812, display the overall modification of the main idea.
Within both tales these themes can be represented through the change in time, the overall plot and
character development. The newer purpose of modified stories is demonstrated in Cinderella . The
fairytale originated from the story, The Little Glass Slipper, which was written by Charles Perrault.
The original tale was reformed through the Brothers Grimm version, otherwise known as Cinderella .
When analyzing the tales, the reader notices that each story has its own moral, ending and plot. Both
the 1697 and the 1812 versions results in a new ending .The original tale concludes with kindness
overruling beauty. The second version concludes with the stepsisters being punished for their actions.
The moral of Perrault s version describes Cinderella s kindness to overrule the cruelness of society.
The newer versions such as the Brothers Grimm tale display a differing moral, which is that an
individual s misbehavior will be punished. These endings allow readers to

Personal Statement My Personal Purpose
Technology, especially computers, has always been a central passion of mine. I am deeply involved
with its implementation into everyday life. Professionally, I utilize computers daily as a means to aid
in the diagnostic process of repairing automobiles. I consider myself to be the most knowledgeable
and tech saavy employee at my current shop in regards to using the scanner to communicate and
interface with electronics and computers on vehicles, utilizing the parts catalog software efficiently to
find the correct part, using software to find service literature and labor manuals to aid in diagnosis and
repair, utilizing Google, Youtube, iATN forums, and the like to find solutions to problems and answers
to questions which may not be readily available or easily accessible within the manufacturers service
literature, and understanding and utilizing the Hunter alignment software to align and occasionally
diagnose very specific problems on vehicles. I have also personally solved a handful of computer
issues under the previous company owner as there were no IT staff during that period to handle such
things. As an example, the computer we (the mechanics) use to look up service literature was a very
outdated Dell pentium 4 desktop PC running Windows XP. This PC was very slow and often would
become unresponsive, in which case it would need to be restarted, which costs myself and my
customers valuable time. The nature of the business and method of compensation (hourly pay with a

Qing Dynasty Of China And Tokugawa Shogunate
Transformations in China and Japan In both the cases of the Qing Dynasty of China and the Tokugawa
Shogunate of Japan, their rule prospered until the centuries old dynastic systems were overthrown in
both countries. In their own ways the Qing and Tokugawa shared similarities yet also displayed many
differences in how they were overthrown, their impacts, and the forces that overall led to the change at
the end of these systems. Their influential powers from the 1600s to the early 19th century brought
great change to their countries that were seen well at first, but the people were not happy with either
complete outcome, overall leading to the definite ends of the two powers despite their differences
throughout. In the mid 1600s, rebellion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For both, the leaders of each had to eventually sign treaties which angered the people and caused
much discontent. In Japan, the shogun gave in and signed the Treaty of Kanagawa in 1854. The people
felt that the shogun had given in too easily to the wants of westerners and were getting angry. In China
after the Boxer Uprising, Cixi was forced to sign a treaty the created reform in China. She had not
been doing what was right with the purpose of the Boxers, and other countries needed her to take more
control than let it happen as she was doing (China and the New Imperialism). Connected to the
Boxers, in both countries foreigners caused conflict, causing even more anger among the people. For
Cixi, the Boxers were fueled by hatred for foreigners, and she saw it as no real problem for what they
were doing, even though it was literally hurting and killing the foreign people. In Japan, Commodore
Matthew Perry came from the United States, opening up ideas of trade that Japan had to truly think
about. They had been isolated for 200 years, and suddenly many foreigners from different countries
were coming to trade with them. By agreeing to trade, the shogun made many of his people angry and
ultimately led to his own downfall (Japan and the West). Also by overall changing policies that both
countries had relied on for so long, it created an almost inevitable change that the people could

Negative Effects of High Fructose Corn Syrup and...
The Negative Effects of High Fructose Corn Syrup and the Potential Alternatives that Can Replace It
Abstract: High fructose corn syrup (HFCS), like many other unhealthy constituents that are used in
foods, is cheap and retains the taste of the natural products it emulates, possibly even surpassing them
in many areas. However, experiments have shown that fructose is not an ideal sugar for human
consumption, not to mention the fact that the use of GM ingredients can be dangerous. In order to
prevent the continued consumption of this noxious sugar, food producers should use healthy
alternative sweeteners to prevent the further dependence on HFCS in our foods and drinks. With
dental, digestive, and other corporal problems such as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
High fructose corn syrup is spawned from a complex, multi step industrial process by which starch is
extracted from corn and converted with acids or enzymes into glucose and fructose through the use of
centrifuges, hydroclones, ion exchange columns, and buckets of enzymes (Center for Science in the
Public Interest para. 3). Still, despite the usage of so many enzymes, HFCS still has the same
sweetness and taste as sucrose from cane sugar and beet sugar and is cheaper than natural sugars it is
easier to transport and can be carried it in tanker trucks (Forristal para. 9). Thus, many food companies
refuse to stop using it because they can make more profit by using this cheap sweetener. A second
concern is that HFCS is a genetically modified product, and can be potentially dangerous for this
reason. The risks...include the potential transfer of antibiotic resistance genes into pathogens, the
uptake of DNA from GM foods by human cells or micro organisms in the gastrointestinal tract and
more indirectly health related ecological disturbances caused by the genes or dissemination of the
genes (Ho para. 2). Today, quite a lot of corn is produced through genetic modification, so those who
try to avoid GM foods should stay away from high fructose corn syrup since it is not only made from
corn, but is also processed with enzymes that have also been altered.

How Did Latin American Culture Develop
The term Latin America encompasses not only South and Central America but the Caribbean also. The
many different ethnicities and cultures present in Latin American music make it diverse and hard to
categorise.Latinos have helped bring these sounds to U.S. audiences, and just like European
Americans and African Americans they have contributed new musical flavors that sprang from their
experiences on U.S. soil. Music in the 1940s was only broadcast through radio and TV. Latin
American music is mainly influenced in Los Angeles, New York City, and San Francisco, but each
city express the music in their own way.
By the 1920s Los Angeles was booming in Latin music with recording and live performances by
Latino artists from the Southwest, New York and the Caribbean. The styles of music that they had in

Introduction. As One Looks Through Recent Histories Of
Introduction As one looks through recent histories of the media, it quickly becomes apparent that there
has been an influx of controversies regarding the freedom of the press. Considering the age of
America, and the state of current technology, it is understandable why it is now reaching such
discrepancies. In particular, the decisions leading up to the conviction of Theodore Kaczynski, known
as the Unabomber, is one of much dispute. By taking a closer look that this case s situation, values
applied, principles upheld, and loyalties owed, one might be able to have a clear understanding of
what ethical decisions should have been taken in regard to the media.

Combined, these two realizations opened up the door for much commentary by journalists. This
situation became apparent, and while the action of publication could not be taken back, there was still
significant discussion about the decision making process.
Values Applied Proceeding from understanding of the situation is a close examination of the values
associated with the case. As defined by Merriam Websters Dictionary, the word value is something (as
a principle or quality) intrinsically valuable or desirable, (Webster). In application to the case, values
can be seen by all three parties of interest(the public, the media, and the government). Clearly, the
public is concerned largely about safety and the overarching goal to bring the Kaczynski to justice.
Safety an be seen as the value of nonviolence which falls under the category of morals. While the
public can not be assured that Kaczynski will not continue his bomb making with the publication of
the manifesto, they can be reasonable assured that the bomb making will continue if it is not
published. To this end, they value the preservation of life. On the other hand, the media has a different
set of values. Both The Washington Post and The New York Times have the desire to be [independent]
from the government, [and] from hostile groups who make threats, (Christians 55). Both are
reasonable utilizations of the value of professional independence. The media is

Essay on Johnstown Flood Disaster
Johnstown Flood
May 31, 1889 was a day that brought terror to the small town of Johnstown Pennsylvania. The small
town was established in 1794 as a steel town and had a population on 30,000. The cause of the flood
actually starts not at the town but 14 upstream at the South Fork Dam were the Little Conemaugh and
Stony Creeks rivers meet as you can see in the image below. At this place is Lake Conemaugh, a 3
mile long lake located up against the side of a mountain, 450 feet higher than Johnstown PA. The
construction started in 1840 under the supervision of engineer William E. Morris but wasn t completed
till 1852 due to financial difficulties. (Johnstown Historical Society) The dam itself spanned a gap of

It didn t take long for the South Fork dam to become so overwhelmed that it broke and dumped water
onto the town causing the deaths of 2,200 people. This was not the first problem they had with the
dam though; structural problems with the dam were not a new development. Only two years after the
finishing of the dam 2 leaks were discovered before the dam was even put into its full usage. They
were forced to empty the dam so they could repair it. The dam suffered a major break on June 10,
1862, when the up stream portion of the stone culvert running under the dam collapsed (Haddock,
Vikki). There was little damage to property downstream, but a large section of the dam over the
damaged portion of the culvert collapsed and was washed away. They dam was then closed and left
with the large gap in it because of financial reasons until 1875 when the Pennsylvania Railroad sold
the dam and also 500 acres to Benjamin Ruff who wanted to turn the area into a summer resort. Ruff s
plan was to fill in the gap left in the dam and allow the lake behind it to refill to make a resort and the
remaining water would run off he had decided to sell the valves used to control the run off for scrap
metal (Johannson, Shelley). Ruff had hired a man to fill the gap who had some experience building
railway embankments but no experience with dams. The plan was to add a double thickness of
hemlock pilings was placed across

Deliberate Self-Harm Paper
Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting
behavior. Past occurrences may cause someone to act in a certain way, especially within social
situations. Deliberate Self Harm (DSH) is a behavior in which a person commits an act with the
purpose of physically harming themselves with or without real suicidal intent. Self harm is most often
related to going through trauma in childhood rather than as an adult. There are many reasons why
people are known to self harm; a lot of the time it is to help feel the pain they are feeling on the inside
in another way. One of the reasons a person may self harm is due to a high rate of childhood sexual or
physical abuse within their past. Despite people s beliefs, people who suffer from a self harm disorder
are not doing it for attention. If someone sees cuts or scars on someone s wrists or legs, their
immediate reaction is that it is from attention. In reality people who self harm are not doing it for
attention and a lot of the time these people take every precaution to hide the cuts to not be questioned
about it. There has been research conducted on many aspects that tie into this behavior; research that
involves both men and women, the outcomes of childhood abuse, and more. Together, these articles of

The critique team would add that there is likely to be cannibalization of the catalogue business
because the models are so closely related. Staples should commission a study to find estimated rates of
cannibalization so that an orderly response can be implemented.
The analysis team is also correct that Staples.com should focus on market share over wallet share. The
market is very large and growing fast. The critique team would add that by capturing online market
share ahead of competitors, Staples.com can reduce the cost of overcoming competitor customer
loyalty in the online market. The switching cost will still be absent for many customers that are new to
the internet office supplies market.
The critique team would add that Staples catalogue business increased wallet share by a factor of
three. This is the very business that will likely be cannibalized in the ordinary course of business by
opening the online store. Staples should not spend too much money on trying to increase wallet share
when it will likely be transitioning between business units. However, Staples should still take the
opportunity to market services as a way to expand customer wallet. All marketing expenditures on
promoting new services market share will spill over into wallet share. Any wallet share campaign on
services should be lower priority than market share marketing.
3. Do you think that Staples.com

Narrative Reflection
Coming into Drexel, an important factor I learned was to have a clear understanding in the art and
mechanics for literature composition. I learned that it would mature my writing to a higher level of
thinking. My past experiences in my writing through high school English teacher feedback indicated
my writing to be full of flaws. I often would receive feedback on my writing being awkwardly worded
or lacking fluidity. The one valuable skill I learned from English courses here at Drexel was the idea
that exposure to different readings, conceptual knowledge in writing and informal writing practices

of my relatives needed more depth, a central theme. Since my encounter of witnessing poverty first

Novel Play Review Notes: Brave New World
Key Quotation
Everyone belongs to everyone else, after all. (149)
The idea of complete access in Brave New World actually elucidates the confinement in which the
citizens of the modern world are living in. Everyone must subject to one another s desires and
motives, seemingly being treated like property. Consequently, the fact that all the members of this
society play both the role of master and slave demonstrates that the only individuals with a sense of
true freedom are those who regulate the society and control the thoughts of the general population.

From the beginning of the novel readers are introduced to a highly advanced yet seemingly dystopian
society, based in London. Huxley establishes that the year is A.F. 632 or 2540, commemorating Henry
Ford s production of the Ford Model T in 1908 (A.F. 1). Already, readers begin to understand the role
the setting plays in the novel as the new World State worship a figure of industrial and technological
advancements similar to how people of our time worship God. Huxley further creates a disturbing
image by elaborately describing every single detail of this new world, from professions such as
Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning to technologies like scent organs and vibro vacuum
massages. This intense emphasis of detail even helps parody our own world. Christianity has the
cross, citizens of the World State have their T . We would say, Thank God! ; they say Thank Ford! .
Consequently, while London enjoys the fruits of these advancements, Huxley describes the savage
reservation in New Mexico with the same kind of detail, but keeping an emphasis on the primitive
characters of this land. The reservation shares a resemblance to that of an exhibition at a zoo, and
partly takes that form as Bernard Marx, one of the protagonists, visits the area to examine and view
the inhabitants. In the reservation, Bernard is given a tour of the culture, activities, and people of the
reservation. Aside from the natural landscape, readers learn that even the

Brief Summary Of The Barony Of Thunder-10-Tronckh
Candide is a young man who lives in the Barony of Thunder ten tronckh. There, he is instructed by the
philosopher Pangloss, whose doctrine is that we live in the best of all possible worlds. One day, the
Baron s daughter Cunégonde comes across Pangloss having sex with Paquette, her mother s
chambermaid. Inspired, she approaches Candide, intending to do the same. Unfortunately, the two are
caught kissing. Furious, the Baron kicks Candide out of Thunder ten tronckh. Candide wanders from
place to place, and is eventually tricked by two Bulgarian soldiers into joining their army. He performs
well in military exercises, but flees like a coward in the first battle.
Candide makes his way to Holland, because he has heard it is a rich country. There, he begs for
money, generally without success. The wife of a Protestant orator dumps a chamber pot over his head

Being A Cheerleader
My most memorable school experience, revolves around the extracurricular of being a cheerleader.
Being able to have the opportunity to thrive in school spirit and to be able to build lifelong friendships
has allowed me to cherish my high school experience. Even though being a cheerleader consists of
many responsibilities and events; my most favored school experience is being a part of the schools
organized pep rallies. Pep rallies are memorable to me because it is a couple times out of the school
year that each student comes together to support and encourage our own fellow students. By
encouraging students of all ages to be apart of this experience is important to me, because seeing each
student happy in sight of their school is inspiring.

A Practical Apocalypse
The purpose of this essay is to exegetically examine 1st Thessalonians 5:1 11. In this exercise I will
seek to elucidate the intention of the author in writing as he has and to show how the specific subject
matter of these verses interrelates with the major themes of the Epistle. That Paul is the author of 1st
Thessalonians is almost undisputed. Green is in agreement with Wanamaker who comments, No
contemporary scholars of repute seem to doubt the Pauline character of the letter. The position taken
in this paper, consistent with the majority of scholarly opinion, is that the letter was written around AD
50 51 from Corinth on the occasion of Paul hearing Timothy s report on the Thessalonian Church.

Christian faith produces hope where otherwise there would be none (cf 5:8) and faith in Christ
changes the nature of grief itself. It is the presence of such faith and hope that distinguishes the
believers from the nonbelievers who have no hope. Christian will grieve as they suffer loss but they
should not be overcome by it. (4:14) as we will see this distinction between believers and unbelievers
will be developed by Paul in chapter 5:4 6 At chapter 5:1 Marshall detects the introduction of a new
subject and an answer to a further question the Thessalonians have asked. Green, surprisingly,
reconstructs that question as when would the day of the Lord come? However there is no need to
anticipate or reconstruct such a question. By using the phrase `you have no need for anything to be
written to you Paul is taking the opportunity to further commend the believers, as he had already done
when he used the same phrase at 4:9. The Thessalonians had learned well Paul s eschatology and were
not asking him about `times and dates. Indeed their attention was very much focussed on more
practical issues. If this was not the case then this response would be obtuse, as Wanamaker notes, Paul
does not give an answer to the question of when. Verses 2 3 draw

The American Education Ideology
The importance of education is highly emphasized in American culture today. According to most
members of society, the more educated a person is, the better off they will be in the long run. The idea
that the furthering of one s education is important and is something everyone should partake in even as
adults can be considered an ideology, which is a system of beliefs or theories held by an individual or
a group.
Because of this educational growth mindset, plenty of American parents enroll their children in some
type of school program at an early age. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the

Huma Human Factors Or Ergonomics
Introduction When we think of user experience we think of it as how a person interacts with a product
but in fact it we should think deeper about how and why a product makes us feel the way it does. User
experience can be defined as the overall experience of a person using a product such as a website or
computer application, especially in terms of how easy or pleasing it is to use . For a company user
experience is at the forefront in why a product is being designed and manufacture in such a way. In
order to produce an exemplary user experience you must meet the exact needs of the customer. For a
company to achieve this with a product they have to give the customer much more than simply what
they were looking for. A product can achieve a high quality user experience by compiling the multiple
factors that contribute to a person s user experience; marketing, design, display and engineering. ...

When you first mention science fiction people s thoughts most likely go to books and films like Star
Wars, Hunger Games, I, Robot, and Avatar, stories we don t always think of as educational . The
future, aliens, space adventures, human like robots, etc. we tend to think of these as silly ideas and
fantasies. But, the world of science fiction teaches us a lot about human nature; our flaws, pitfalls, and
irrationalities.
The flaws of our nature are demonstrated in A.I. a film based off the Supertoys stories. In this series
we read/watched in class, a robot child made to stimulate love for parents without children. This
artificial intelligence human robot does no wrong, loves unconditionally and always listens to their

The Day the Earth Stood Still and Close Encounters of the Third Kind are such stories. In these stories
shows our human nature in the fact of we are afraid of the unknown. For example, in The Day the
Earth Stood Still we re afraid of the alien and threaten him with military forces throughout the whole
rest of the film. Even when we discover he is only here to warn and save us. Close Encounters of the
Third Kind is different in the fact that we do not threaten the alien visitors we wonder and welcome
them if we wish. It was frightening to the characters but was the right thing to do in the situation. The
irrationality in this film is shown not by the military forces but by the way Ronnie is unsupportive of
Roy. Despites the fact it would be difficult to see your spouse obsessed with one thing and distant to
your family, she should ve realized, stuck with him and supported him through the mess. Many people
are like that in our society; only around for the good times, but when the going gets though they bail
on those around. That to me is irrational. If you re not willing to stick with someone in the good and
the bad, then why be part of their lives?
In essence, science fiction is not just fun and games of aliens, robots and the unknown, it s a teacher.
This genre educates and warns us of our destructive tendency. Science fiction teaches us about human
nature; our flaws, pitfalls, and

My Life In High School
Everyone always talks about how high school was so fun and you should have the time of your life,
and everyone got along, but I never quite saw it. High school for me was not a time of befriending
everyone, finding love, and fun times. To me, it was a confined prison, full of sweaty kids, stupid
drama, and overwhelming work to do. I spent the majority of the time trying to find who I belong
with, a club I fit in to, people to hang out with, and how not to be such an awkward person all the
time. I was under stress constantly, for my parents forced me to focus on nothing but school, and
despite me being focused on that, I wanted to try to hang out with friends as much as I could. I had to
learn how to balance social life, school life, and my alone time. And what a struggle that was.
Freshmen year in high school was a blur now that I look back on it. I knew nobody and nobody knew
me. I was in the band, and that was my only form of social interaction. The people who were in my
section, the trumpets, would talk to me and if we had classes together, they would sit by me and talk to
me. These same people I saw the following year and we talked more, but I still didn t hang out with
anyone outside of school. Junior year, I was also in cross country and band, and I began to socialize
more. When people made plans, I hung out with them since I had a car. I helped out my band by doing
various tasks, such as setting up and tearing down equipment, as well as assisting my band director

Tatiana s Sex Advice for All Creations by Olivia Hudson
Tatiana s Sex Advice for All Creations, by Olivia Hudson is not only informative, and interesting but
humorous and revealing. Throughout this book it explains why all creatures, not only humans, are
interested in their sex life. Sex itself, and the reproduction process is why certain breeds are carried
through century after century and others go extinct. Hudson has a way of explaining the importance of
performance, timing, technique, and interest when it comes to sex, and how all of these concepts make
a huge difference in those who have the opportunity to reproduce and those who do not. She also
discusses how important sex is to all creatures because without it, this world would be nothing. My
view on sex and biology changed completely after reading this book. It shows an emphasis on the
physical and mental reasons for things and a lot less on the biological reasoning. It helped me
understand that sex is more important them many really think.
Olivia Hudson graduated from Stanford University and received a Doctor of Philosophy from Oxford

Chinese Culture And Western Culture In Child Rearing
Introduction
Culture is a set of values that are ingrained in human beings from birth. They define our actions, our
view of what is good, fair, and just, and shape the way we live our lives. The definition of cross
cultural values and beliefs is that of where people from different countries or regions interact, bringing
their different values, viewpoints, and practices unique to their culture (Dictionary, 2017). In this
literature review, we will analyze the differences between Chinese and Western culture in child
rearing, with a focus on the impact of cultural values on parents and/or teachers socialization efforts,
how children accommodate or resist those socialization efforts, and finally, we will discuss the
implications for parents and teachers.
Socializing behavior is defined as behavior enacted towards children, or in the presence of children, to
induce or shape their behavior or understanding of behavior (LeCuyer Zhang, 2015).
The impact of cultural values on parents and/or teachers socialization efforts
The Chinese culture is known for its collectivism with focus on group success over personal success,
and hierarchal authority where children are expected to obey parents, teachers, and other authorities in
power. This style is characterized by attempts to shape and control the child according to absolute
standards, with a high value of obedience to authoritative figures (Lieber, Fung, Wing Leung Leung,
2006). Chinese people, in general, are more willing to

Similarly to Scarface and The Godfather , violence and crime are key themes in the films and
therefore the male characters dominate the violent scenes and radiate willpower. Mia Wallace, the wife
of the gangster Marsellus Wallace is portrayed as powerful and seductive. At first, it appears that she
is stable within her relationship with Wallace, and is additionally feared by other individuals such as
Vincent, when he arrives at her house to escort her for a night out. However, later on Mia mistakes
heroin for cocaine and manages to overdose, which results in her relying on the man in her life
because she is so weak. Even so, in the promotional poster of Pulp Fiction , Uma Thurman (Mia), is
shown posing on a bed with a cigarette in one hand and a gun in front of her. This in many ways
signifies power as the gun has become a key piece of iconography in the gangster genre, and guns
hold a lot of power in them as they have the ability, with help, to kill or cause serious bodily harm.
Nevertheless, this is misleading as the women, specifically Mia Wallace, do not actually hold any
power in the film. Mia Wallace s character is a reminder of Marsellus

The Music Of A Christmas Carol
about it (Gaskell 18). James, who is another servant, tells Hester that she has mistaken the wind
soughing among the trees for music (Gaskell 17). Hester must force Agnes, by way of rank, to reveal
that it is believed that the dead old lord , plays the organ (Gaskell 18). Miss Furnivall is first connected
with the music, when Hester claims that she thought it was her playing the organ (Gaskell 18). Being
that Miss Furnivall is deaf, and is therefore an unlikely musician, this insinuates that Miss Furnivall is
connected to this problem. However similar to A Christmas Carol , the music is suggested to be
derived from ghostly means, because the organ is found to be broken inside, therefore unable to be
played normally (Gaskell 18). This thought is later underlined when the child, Rosamond, goes
missing, and ghosts threaten the household, further emphasizing that a problem exists (Gaskell 20,24).
Music is suggested many ways to cause her problems between Miss Furnivall and her sister, Miss
Maude, rather than aid the sisters in a solution. Both sisters fell in love with the same man, a foreign
musician, whom their father had down from London to play music (Gaskell 26). The sisters develop a
rivalry over the foreigner (Gaskell 27). The foreigner is never given a name because it is suggested
that he is not consequential as a person, but rather as a problem between the sisters. As he is of lower

The Role Of Ethics In The Great Gatsby
Ethics and Morals
Morals are the principles on which one s judgments of right and wrong are based. Ethics are principles
of right conduct. These two words are closely related. I think morals and ethics should be followed. In
the book The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald characters display immoral actions. The
characters simply aren t bothered by some of their bad choices with work ethics, marriage, and
common sense. In the book, good work ethics are poorly disregarded. Meyer Wolfsheim? No, he s a
gambler. (Fitzgerald 73) Gatsby tells Nick this at lunch and explains how Wolfsheim is responsible for
the fixing of the 1919 world series. He gambled knowing the outcome would be in his favor, and he
got a lot of money off of cheating. Wolfsheim s act clearly shows how much he cares about work
ethics. Tom brings up the fact that Gatsby was a bootlegger and he infers that s where all his money

San Pedro Essay
It s history,The harbor in San Pedro was used as a trading post by Spanish missionary monks from
Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. The monks met ships at the water s edge with provisions from Spain.
The first American trading ship to call at San Pedro was the Lelia Bryd, in 1805. At that time, it was
illegal to conduct business with any other country but Spain. Because of the distance and loose
regulations, however, trade with other countries thrived. In 1822 an independent Mexican government
lifted the Spanish restrictions on trade. That led to a surge of settlement and commercial ventures in

While we typically think of the pressure being released in a dramatic eruption from a volcanic mountain that has been formed, the pressure can also be released as magma quietly escapes through fissures, or cracks within the ground near the volcano. This process is referred to as fissure eruption. Once the magma is released from the volcano, it is called lava. Fissure eruptions can occur over a wide area, but over a few hours or days, they typically become a central vent from which the pressure will continue to be released. Occasionally, lava will flow back into the ground by pouring into a crack or an open eruptive fissure, a process called drainback. Lava can also flow back into the same fissure from which it erupted (Krock, 2002). Regardless of where the lava flows, the change in the terrain is called a lava plateau. These lava plateaus can be relatively small or very large. For example, the Columbia plateau covers an area more than 150,000 square kilometers and extends over the states of Washington, Idaho and Oregon (Landscape America, n.d.). Two materials make up a volcanic eruption: lava and ash. However, each volcano can have different proportions of lava to ash. Volcanoes in Hawaii and the Galapagos are mostly lava (greater than 95%) with just a small (less than 5%) ash, typically in the form of cinder (Oregon State University, n.d.). Other volcanoes may have more cinder ash than lava. Are All Volcanoes the Same? Volcanoes come ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Comparing Cinderella And Cinderella Traditionally fairytales have morals for their audiences. Throughout time, these stories develop themes and ideas that allow readers to discover their purpose. These versions let the audience envision the story from a newer perspective. Modified versions reveal the underlying cause of the storyline and its characters. It is clear that The Little Glass Slipper published by Charles Perrault in 1697 and Cinderella published by Brothers Grimm in 1812, display the overall modification of the main idea. Within both tales these themes can be represented through the change in time, the overall plot and character development. The newer purpose of modified stories is demonstrated in Cinderella . The fairytale originated from the story, The Little Glass Slipper, which was written by Charles Perrault. The original tale was reformed through the Brothers Grimm version, otherwise known as Cinderella . When analyzing the tales, the reader notices that each story has its own moral, ending and plot. Both the 1697 and the 1812 versions results in a new ending .The original tale concludes with kindness overruling beauty. The second version concludes with the stepsisters being punished for their actions. The moral of Perrault s version describes Cinderella s kindness to overrule the cruelness of society. The newer versions such as the Brothers Grimm tale display a differing moral, which is that an individual s misbehavior will be punished. These endings allow readers to ... Their influential powers from the 1600s to the early 19th century brought great change to their countries that were seen well at first, but the people were not happy with either complete outcome, overall leading to the definite ends of the two powers despite their differences throughout. In Japan, the shogun gave in and signed the Treaty of Kanagawa in 1854. The people felt that the shogun had given in too easily to the wants of westerners and were getting angry. In China after the Boxer Uprising, Cixi was forced to sign a treaty the created reform in China. She had not been doing what was right with the purpose of the Boxers, and other countries needed her to take more control than let it happen as she was doing (China and the New Imperialism). Connected to the Boxers, in both countries foreigners caused conflict, causing even more anger among the people. For Cixi, the Boxers were fueled by hatred for foreigners, and she saw it as no real problem for what they were doing, even though it was literally hurting and killing the foreign people. In Japan, Commodore Matthew Perry came from the United States, opening up ideas of trade that Japan had to truly think about. They had been isolated for 200 years, and suddenly many foreigners from different countries were coming to trade with them. The Negative Effects of High Fructose Corn Syrup and the Potential Alternatives that Can Replace It Abstract: High fructose corn syrup (HFCS), like many other unhealthy constituents that are used in foods, is cheap and retains the taste of the natural products it emulates, possibly even surpassing them in many areas. However, experiments have shown that fructose is not an ideal sugar for human consumption, not to mention the fact that the use of GM ingredients can be dangerous. In order to prevent the continued consumption of this noxious sugar, food producers should use healthy alternative sweeteners to prevent the further dependence on HFCS in our foods and drinks. With dental, digestive, and other corporal problems such as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... High fructose corn syrup is spawned from a complex, multi step industrial process by which starch is extracted from corn and converted with acids or enzymes into glucose and fructose through the use of centrifuges, hydroclones, ion exchange columns, and buckets of enzymes (Center for Science in the Public Interest para. 3). Still, despite the usage of so many enzymes, HFCS still has the same sweetness and taste as sucrose from cane sugar and beet sugar and is cheaper than natural sugars it is easier to transport and can be carried it in tanker trucks (Forristal para. 9). Thus, many food companies refuse to stop using it because they can make more profit by using this cheap sweetener. A second concern is that HFCS is a genetically modified product, and can be potentially dangerous for this reason. The risks...include the potential transfer of antibiotic resistance genes into pathogens, the uptake of DNA from GM foods by human cells or micro organisms in the gastrointestinal tract and more indirectly health related ecological disturbances caused by the genes or dissemination of the genes (Ho para. 2). Today, quite a lot of corn is produced through genetic modification, so those who try to avoid GM foods should stay away from high fructose corn syrup since it is not only made from corn, but is also processed with enzymes that have also been altered. ... Only two years after the finishing of the dam 2 leaks were discovered before the dam was even put into its full usage. They were forced to empty the dam so they could repair it. Already, readers begin to understand the role the setting plays in the novel as the new World State worship a figure of industrial and technological advancements similar to how people of our time worship God. When you first mention science fiction people s thoughts most likely go to books and films like Star Wars, Hunger Games, I, Robot, and Avatar, stories we don t always think of as educational . The future, aliens, space adventures, human like robots, etc. we tend to think of these as silly ideas and fantasies. But, the world of science fiction teaches us a lot about human nature; our flaws, pitfalls, and irrationalities. The flaws of our nature are demonstrated in A.I. a film based off the Supertoys stories. In this series we read/watched in class, a robot child made to stimulate love for parents without children. The Day the Earth Stood Still and Close Encounters of the Third Kind are such stories. In these stories shows our human nature in the fact of we are afraid of the unknown. For example, in The Day the Earth Stood Still we re afraid of the alien and threaten him with military forces throughout the whole rest of the film. Even when we discover he is only here to warn and save us. Close Encounters of the Third Kind is different in the fact that we do not threaten the alien visitors we wonder and welcome them if we wish. It was frightening to the characters but was the right thing to do in the situation. The irrationality in this film is shown not by the military forces but by the way Ronnie is unsupportive of Roy. Despites the fact it would be difficult to see your spouse obsessed with one thing and distant to your family, she should ve realized, stuck with him and supported him through the mess. Many people are like that in our society; only around for the good times, but when the going gets though they bail on those around. That to me is irrational. If you re not willing to stick with someone in the good and the bad, then why be part of their lives? High school for me was not a time of befriending everyone, finding love, and fun times. To me, it was a confined prison, full of sweaty kids, stupid drama, and overwhelming work to do. I spent the majority of the time trying to find who I belong with, a club I fit in to, people to hang out with, and how not to be such an awkward person all the time. I was under stress constantly, for my parents forced me to focus on nothing but school, and despite me being focused on that, I wanted to try to hang out with friends as much as I could. I had to learn how to balance social life, school life, and my alone time. And what a struggle that was. Freshmen year in high school was a blur now that I look back on it. I knew nobody and nobody knew me. I was in the band, and that was my only form of social interaction. The people who were in my section, the trumpets, would talk to me and if we had classes together, they would sit by me and talk to me. These same people I saw the following year and we talked more, but I still didn t hang out with anyone outside of school. Junior year, I was also in cross country and band, and I began to socialize more. When people made plans, I hung out with them since I had a car. Throughout this book it explains why all creatures, not only humans, are interested in their sex life. Sex itself, and the reproduction process is why certain breeds are carried through century after century and others go extinct. Hudson has a way of explaining the importance of performance, timing, technique, and interest when it comes to sex, and how all of these concepts make a huge difference in those who have the opportunity to reproduce and those who do not. She also discusses how important sex is to all creatures because without it, this world would be nothing. My view on sex and biology changed completely after reading this book. It shows an emphasis on the physical and mental reasons for things and a lot less on the biological reasoning. It helped me understand that sex is more important them many really think. • 34. Chinese Culture And Western Culture In Child Rearing Introduction Culture is a set of values that are ingrained in human beings from birth. They define our actions, our view of what is good, fair, and just, and shape the way we live our lives. The definition of cross cultural values and beliefs is that of where people from different countries or regions interact, bringing their different values, viewpoints, and practices unique to their culture (Dictionary, 2017). In this literature review, we will analyze the differences between Chinese and Western culture in child rearing, with a focus on the impact of cultural values on parents and/or teachers socialization efforts, how children accommodate or resist those socialization efforts, and finally, we will discuss the implications for parents and teachers. Socializing behavior is defined as behavior enacted towards children, or in the presence of children, to induce or shape their behavior or understanding of behavior (LeCuyer Zhang, 2015). The impact of cultural values on parents and/or teachers socialization efforts The Chinese culture is known for its collectivism with focus on group success over personal success, and hierarchal authority where children are expected to obey parents, teachers, and other authorities in power. This style is characterized by attempts to shape and control the child according to absolute standards, with a high value of obedience to authoritative figures (Lieber, Fung, Wing Leung Leung, 2006). Similarly to Scarface and The Godfather , violence and crime are key themes in the films and therefore the male characters dominate the violent scenes and radiate willpower. Mia Wallace, the wife of the gangster Marsellus Wallace is portrayed as powerful and seductive. At first, it appears that she is stable within her relationship with Wallace, and is additionally feared by other individuals such as Vincent, when he arrives at her house to escort her for a night out. However, later on Mia mistakes heroin for cocaine and manages to overdose, which results in her relying on the man in her life because she is so weak. Even so, in the promotional poster of Pulp Fiction , Uma Thurman (Mia), is shown posing on a bed with a cigarette in one hand and a gun in front of her. This in many ways signifies power as the gun has become a key piece of iconography in the gangster genre, and guns hold a lot of power in them as they have the ability, with help, to kill or cause serious bodily harm. Nevertheless, this is misleading as the women, specifically Mia Wallace, do not actually hold any power in the film. Mia Wallace s character is a reminder of Marsellus ... Hester must force Agnes, by way of rank, to reveal that it is believed that the dead old lord , plays the organ (Gaskell 18). Miss Furnivall is first connected with the music, when Hester claims that she thought it was her playing the organ (Gaskell 18). Being that Miss Furnivall is deaf, and is therefore an unlikely musician, this insinuates that Miss Furnivall is connected to this problem. However similar to A Christmas Carol , the music is suggested to be derived from ghostly means, because the organ is found to be broken inside, therefore unable to be played normally (Gaskell 18). This thought is later underlined when the child, Rosamond, goes missing, and ghosts threaten the household, further emphasizing that a problem exists (Gaskell 20,24). Music is suggested many ways to cause her problems between Miss Furnivall and her sister, Miss Maude, rather than aid the sisters in a solution. Both sisters fell in love with the same man, a foreign musician, whom their father had down from London to play music (Gaskell 26). The sisters develop a rivalry over the foreigner (Gaskell 27).
