John Rittenbaugh looks at God s continual filling from the point of the beatitude referencing Matthew
5:6. A God created hunger begins when God calls us into his family. A hunger and thirst develops
within us so that He may fill it. When God creates a need in us to know Him, to understand His will
and be like Him, it is for the express purpose of drawing us to Him to embrace all these things as part
of ourselves.

Pericles Funeral Oration Analysis
As an historian, Thucydides wrote a very rational and contemporary account of the Peloponnesian
war. Being an Athenian, his account gives us an eye witness record of not only the events, but the
causes and motives that lead up those events. For a historian to be objective Thucydides change in
attitude regarding the war is subtly woven into his narrative.
In Pericles Funeral Oration , we see war in a favorable light brought about by its protagonist Pericles,
who does not hold back in delivering an impassioned eulogy for the fallen soldiers before the people.
His reasons and his deliverance being compelling, he highlights the purpose and necessity of war as a
means to preserve and protect this great democracy which favors all men equally, opens its doors to
foreigners, provides justice for all, allows the freedom to advance oneself as well as indulge in
pleasure. The education of the Athenian schools far surpassing any other empire, in producing well
rounded men who are free spirited and yet will not hesitate to defend the nation, the legacy of the
forefathers and fathers who also fought to acquire, enrich and sustain an empire such as Athens is all
worth fighting to preserve. He highlights the power of sacrifice as honorable for the love of a great
country in his conclusion when he says, And where the rewards for merit are the greatest, there are
found the best citizens.
After the patriotic speech of Pericles, the city of Athens takes an ominous turn where because of the
congested, walled in city, a plague sweeps over killing an estimated 25% of the people, in which
Thucydides was also a survivor, as described in the article titled, The plague of Athens by R. Littman.
What stands out in this account is the complete dismantling of the cities honor where in desperation
and hopelessness its people indulged themselves in excess and lawlessness ensued. The fear of being
consumed by this painful, fatal, illness that did not discriminate and had no known cure caused its
inhabitants to throw caution to the wind, abdicating all that the Athenians were known for in Pericles
oration in terms of valor, reason, morality, honor and fear of the gods. Even reason and oration could

I have been greatly impacted by all of the artists, styles, and types of art we have talked about so far in
Art History I. We have looked at sculptors, paintings, architecture, and prints with varying styles, from
a numerous amount of artists. While I am intrigued by mostly all of what we have studied, The Last
Supper paintings catch my eye the most. Many artists have successfully completed paintings of The
Last Supper including, Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese, and Leonardo da Vinci; however, da Vinci was the

Venetian Mannerist painter and is seen as an artist who merged the rich color of Titian with the
