College Applicaiton Essay
Snow crunches under worn heels, marking a single path across frozen empty cornfields spread
afar and ever so still. It is an empty canvas, glowing lustrous in the light of the splendor above.
The night is ablaze in flickers of light cast scattered across the darkness. Upon this frigid expanse I
stand alone from the world, but for the dead remains of cornhusks trapped beneath the ice. My skin
burns from the bite of the wind, but when I glance above, caught among the stars, I am perfectly
content.
Growing up in the suburbs, I felt alive and yet, overwhelmed. Pulsing with electricity, the whole
world was one click away, at my fingertips. A network of sights, sounds, and puzzles spread out
before me, an overpowering and uncontrollable force. My life is run by schedules, planning each
minute and precious second out in harsh ink. Everything must be in order, must be under control,
and must have a purpose. Real life doesn t run on a schedule; even the smallest decision can alter
the direction of the future. I am frightened of just how much I am unable to see, how much I
might overlook and be unable to safely tuck away in the far recesses of my memories. In the
suburbs so close in contact with uncontrollable chaos, I am not can never be perfectly content.
Instead, I find my peace in the middle of my Grandfather s cornfields.
Dependence on control defines the way I run my life. It thrives upon my unease of the unknown,
and binds me from moving against of what I am afraid of. I fear

The Music Industry Essay
Steve Jones in the article Music and the Internet suggests that popular music as well as academic
articles relating to popular music were created and distributed by people who didn t completely
understand the idea of the music industry. He ultimately suggests that today compared to the
introduction of popular music, a growing number of consumers are using the Internet to attain
music. The internet has drastically changed the distribution systems also creating many ethical
problems that weren t found in the music industry before the internet. Because the internet started
making a presence in almost every single business, it was almost no question that the internet is
bringing about some changes in the music industry; a billion dollar... Show more content on

He has made a lot of dynamic presentations to scholarly and business events about the Internet
and social change that it gave to music, and about the internet s ethical and the appeal to
everyday families. He is also an editor of the New Media Society, which is a global journal of
research on up and coming media, technology. Most of Steve Jones writing is very impactful
because he uses so many real life situations that give the reader that much belief in what he is
saying. Music and the internet , is one of his most famous because it shows our generation the
talent that was dominated by the beginning of popular music. The article starts of saying The
fact is, if you want to make a difference in music, you have to change the machine. This
undeniably gives justice to what Steve Jones wants to portray with this article. Throughout the
article, the words power over sound is used to describe what the writers and performers of early
popular music believed in. The article goes to say the beginning of popular music was the
beginning of a new world, in the 1850 s many of the restaurants had a dance floor usually in the
middle of the restaurant. Ironically Blues and Jazz were played by Black Americans who wrote
and performed them at such restaurants; Steve Jones was quick to point out the ironic side of
having black people

Transgender Identity
Transgenders have been a part of the LGBT community ever since continuously growing in
representation most especially mainstream culture. Popular transgender people such as Laverne
Cox and Caitlin Jenner are cultural representatives of this group. Filipino society has also
experienced an emergence of LGBT and gendernon conformity. As reported by the United States
Agency of International Development (USAID), reference was made to transvestism and crossing
gender in the 16th and 17th century with the babaylan (Tan 8). Even if modern Filipino society
tolerates trans personalities such as congresswoman Geraldine Roman, and Jake Zyrus, a trans male
singer formerly known as Charice, there has yet to be true justice and respect for the trans
community in even the smallest of circumstances.
A transgender as defined by Cambridge Dictionary is, someone who feels that they are not the
same gender (= sex) as the physical body they were born with, or who does not fit easily into
being either a male or a female. Given their gender identity differing from their sex assigned at
birth, a lot of the behavioral aspects in their lifestyle coordinate with the gender they identify
with. A specific aspect of this would be the restroom that these trans people use, that being the
opposite gender to what sex they were born as, or in short the gender of which they identify with.
However, it is not as easy as simply entering the comfort room, in fact the rest room to this day still

Community Vs. Perception Of Alcohol
Ian Markle 10/03/2016 Community vs Paranoia The influence of alcohol has been everywhere
in human history and is undoubtedly the most dominant psychoactive substance in every human
culture. It was critical for developing countries where alcohol was key to trade. (Awkward)
Alcohol was one of the main three psychoactive products (with tobacco and caffeine) which
helped drive the globalization of trade from the 17th century. Today, the consumption of alcohol
has become more omnipresent because of how diversified drinks have become. Drinking is an
increasingly globalized cultural practice because alcohol is a substance with a global history.
Producers of these alcoholic beverages tend to be large corporations reliant on innovative
marketing techniques. The global alcohol industry is also trying to expand into developing
countries while continuing to collect profits in the saturated markets of North America and
Europe. Thesis: No one knows for certain as to when humans first produced alcohol. The original
alcoholic drink could have been created from berries or honey. But according to (quote), the
discovery of late Stone Age beer containers dating back to 8000 BCE demonstrates that humans
have been fermenting alcoholic drinks for at least 10,000 years. Since then alcohol has been
produced, consumed, and traded by humans for thousands of years. An early example of alcohol
trade happens in 3000 B.C., early Mesopotamian farmers realized that the alcohol surplus they

Strategic Resource Management Essay
By integrating human resources management (HRM) into the Hospital planning process and
emphasizing human resources (HR) activities that support the Hospital s mission and goals,
hospital departments are able to ensure that the management of HR contributes to mission
accomplishment and managers are held accountable for their HRM decisions.
Strategic human resources management...strategic alignment...alignment with Hospital mission
accomplishment. These are just a few of the terms being used to describe the new, evolving role
of HRM. What do these terms really mean? If you were to ask Hospital employees and managers,
you would probably get a wide range of answers. So, it s important to establish from the beginning
what is really being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, employment security may help align the interests of employees and Hospital partners.
Hospital problems are reduced because when job security exists, the employees, like shareholders,
are concerned about the long term success of the firm. With the commitment from the Hospital for
job security, application of laws becomes a relationship that both the employer and employee has to
manage.
Application of Laws
Many employers are required to develop affirmative action plans (AAPs) that identify problem
areas in the employment of protected class members and initiate goals and steps to overcome those
problems. Memorial Hospital is no different. Memorial follows all laws on sex/gender
discrimination, which have addressed issues regarding pregnancy discrimination, unequal pay for
similar jobs, and sexual harassment.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that most employers identify the essential
functions of jobs and make reasonable accommodation for individuals with disabilities, unless
undue hardship results.
Implementation of equal employment opportunity requires appropriate record keeping, such as
completing the annual report (EEO 1), and keeping applicant flow data. Below is the Civil Rights
Act of 1964, Title VII and what it covers. I have also included some additional information that fall
under the umbrella of the Civil Right Act of 1964,

Also, with the popularization of cars and the construction of modern roads, rural farmers were
not limited to shopping by catalog. The American city was becoming larger and farmers were
abandoning their farms to work in factories and live in cities and by 1920 the urban population
outnumbered the rural for the first time (Sears History, 2009). In 1925, Sears experimented with
one store located in the Chicago mail order plant. It was a huge success and before the end of the
year, he opened seven more retail stores (mostly on his mail order plants). Within two years,
Sears had opened 27 retail locations. The retail operation grew to 192 stores in 1928, 319 stores

Since its conception welfare has been a source of continuous controversy. The main negative
throughout the years has been that people on welfare will never attempt to find a job and just
live off the government, but recently there has been a lot of attention brought specifically to the
recipients that are drug abusers. Therefore, some taxpayers are calling for a system in which
recipients are drug tested prior to receiving aid, but these systems are strongly opposed by those
who are current members of welfare. There have been several states that have attempted to start
some sort of drug testing program. This overview of programs was provided by Alcoholism Drug
Abuse Weekly . Michigan and Texas enacted system that would refuse aid to recipients that
failed a drug test while applying for a job, but did not require employers to administrate drug test.
Wisconsin attempted a similar bill that required employers to submit any failed drug test whether
or not the person was on welfare or not in hopes of catching any current or future applicants of
welfare. In 2003 TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) passed a law that all Michigan
applicants were required to take drug test prior to acceptation. Along with Florida that tried the
same thing. Missouri implemented a process that would only

Single and Not Ready to Mingle
Single and Not Ready to Mingle So many single people are under the impression that they are
ready to mingle again, but they are wrong! Are you one of them? How ready do you think you
are to mingle once more? People are single for many different reasons. Some of the common
reasons include that they choose to be single, just came out of an emotional relationship and
went through a trying breakup, or that they find it difficult to meet the perfect partner. Being
Single by Choice People regularly choose to be alone and there is nothing wrong with that.
Some people perform better in life with a partner alongside them, but you find just as many who
prefer the opposite scenario. Choosing to be alone is perfectly normal and people make this
particular choice for the following reasons: They are happiest when alone and totally love their
own life They find being single to be a simpler and easier life They enjoy doing all sorts of
everyday things and activities unaccompanied They have never been very social and are
introverted around others Depressed people find that being alone alleviates the depression Being
alone give them chance to reflect on their own situation, life, and future ambitions They have more
fun alone Various individuals find that being alone boost their self esteem Next time that you
wonder about a friend, family member, or colleague who has been single for a long time, you may
consider the above reasons instead of thinking that something has to

Alzheimer s Disease
Alzheimer s disease The Silent Killer Who are you? Do I know you? Alzheimer s disease is a
very traumatic and disheartening disease that can affect loved ones in our families and
relationships. I will be discussing the causes and prevention of this disease even though scientific
facts and research are still being tested for validity. Alzheimer s disease was first diagnosed to be a
medical condition back in 1906 by Dr. Alois Alzheimer. Dr. Alzheimer identified this mental illness
after witnessing the mental decaying mind of a woman who experienced memory loss, language
problems, and unpredictable behavior. Alzheimer s disease is the most common form of dementia
that usually targets people over the age of 60.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Having Down syndrome can also increase your risk of developing Alzheimer s as well as
diabetes. Diabetes is linked to Alzheimer s due to the fact they have both been linked to
cardiovascular diseases. They both exhibit utilization of glucose in the brains. These two
diagnoses are so much alike that it is hard to tell an Alzheimer s brain from a diabetic s brain.
The manufacturing of insulin in the brain is condensed and the nerve cells are less sensitive.
Diabetic drugs are now being tested to see if they could possibly help out Alzheimer patients.
Another factor I found very interesting was that people with less than 6 years of some type of
higher education appear to have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer s disease. From these
studies, it was assumed that the brain stimulation students receive actually provides some type of
protective barrier for the brain therefore not allowing of the onset of the deterioration of the mind.
Now that s a good slogan for college and higher education if you ask me. Scientists have actually
come up with some preventative measures against Alzheimer s and the onset of this horrendous
disease. Physical activity, brain stimulation (such as puzzles, games, regularly reading, watching
television, and any other type of social activity), nutritious diet, and also there is an ongoing search
for a vaccine. I saw where in Europe they actually treat their age related dementia patients with
gingko biloba. Gingko biloba is thought

Annotation Of Langston Hughes Weary Blues
Langston Hughes the writer of this poem. He was born February 1, 1902, he died on May 22,
1967. He grew up in Joplin, Missouri. There are a few interesting things that caught my eye as I
was reading about him, like he was raised by his grandmother, he started to have an interest in
poetry in Lincoln, he was working as a seaman at one point of time in his life, the poem Weary
Blues was his first book, he made his first novel in 1930, and last but not least he won a Harmon
gold medal for literature. The poem Weary Blues was published by him in 1926. Now here we
go with the poem Weary Blues. It only has one staza, that s it just one stanza. Since its only one
stanza I found things within the lines such as in lines one, two, four, and five they all have ten
syllables. The poem does have a little bit of a rhyme but there is no actual set rhyme scheme.
The poem have a couple of repetition lines like, in the poem he said he did a lazy sway.... He did
a lazy sway..... which was showing that the man was showing a type of interest in the music that
was playing. Also there is another repetition which is O Blues! but they are not back to back he
just said that word about three times throughout the poem. Which O Blues! is showing that
somebody is in a sad type... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The type of figurative language that is happening is similes and onomatopoeia. Here is an
example of both the simile and the onomatopoeia that I spotted in the story. In lines 35 it says he
slept like a rock which is meaning that after playing all that music he was sleepy and every tired
so he slept hard. Now on line 23 it says Thump, thump, thump, went his foot on the floor which is
showing a meaning of him really getting interested into the music as the person plays it. The
allegory of the poem is that he wants people to know that there is a deeper meaning to the song that
is playing at the moment of the

The Film American Graffiti ( Dir. Lucas
This essay is going to look into how the film American Graffiti (dir. Lucas, 1973), depicts a teen
experience. In order to understand how American Graffiti depicts a teen experience the camera,
sound, characters and mis en scene will be analysed. It will be discussed on how Lucas portrays
teen experiences through each character s action and how their teen experience changes through
the film through the use of the camera, sound and mis en scene. Also, it will be discussed how each
characters teen experience differs through the use of the camera, sound and mis en scene.
In the hop scene, Curt is seen walking down an empty school hall wall walking towards a locker.
The camera dollies towards the locker following Curt s movements as he turns the dials on the lock

growing up can be seen as Curt is unable to unlock what is presumed to be his locker, as the code
of the locker may have changed as he has now finished school and is going off to college. In

Kamehameha V
Thesis Paper Who would you pick for your top 5 ali i in Hawaiian History? Would Kamehameha

age of 18 to work in the government office building and he was the last of the Kamehameha s to
rule. Kamehameha V was the second best ruler behind Kamehameha the great because he had to

for things he thought were right for his people. When Prince Lot and Princess Pauhi were

Religious And Civil Life During The 19th Century
One can hardly speak of the Haskalah in Eastern Europe without referencing its relationship to
Hasidism. Beginning in eighteenth century Poland Lithuanian area, the Bal Shem Tov created a
brand of simple and extremely pietistic Judaism appealing most to uneducated working class Jews.
Hasidism viewed Western ideas, language, and even dress as a threat to traditional Jewish society.
In addition, religious and civil life were inseparable, unlike their western coreligionist. These values
brought Haskalah in Eastern Europe into a continuous and often tense struggle with the traditional
Jewish community.
Unlike their Western coreligionist, Eastern European Jewish communities were still quite
traditional by the early 19th century. The Hasidic movement strengthening traditional Jewish life
and filled the leadership gap left by the government abolishment of autonomous communal
structures known as kahals. At the same time, the maskilim were also exerting increasing influence
and leadership among Eastern Jewish communities, and viewed Hasidism as outdated separatist
preventing Jews from modernizing. To this end, maskilim sought to discredit Hasidism particularly
with state authorities. Journals such as Ha Karmel, Razsvet, and Kerem Hemed, carried the clever
satire from maskilim such as Joseph Perl and Isaac Erter s Gilgul Nefesh (Transmigration of the
Soul) portraying Hasidism as backward, and purposefully antagonistic to government efforts
towards Jewish social and political

The Alienation Effect in A Room of One s Own
The Alienation Effect in A Room of One s Own But, Woolf starts A Room of One s Own, you
may say, we asked you to speak about women and fiction what, has that got to do with a room of
one s own? (3). This opening is the interruption to a thought that we didn t hear; it is part of a
speech that we aren t in the audience for. The reader has barely ventured into the text, and already
he is left disoriented. Instead of introducing her reader to her argument, Woolf immediately and
intentionally puts this reader at odds with her work. These lines do not comfortably introduce her
thinking; they charge us with the task of both discovering and analyzing the argument that Woolf
plans to make there is no room for the passive reader here. Throughout the text, Woolf works to
estrange the audience from becoming emotionally involved in the text by taking that which is
familiar and making it strange. The estrangement that is used in the text isn t unique to Woolf s
work (CITE THIS SHIT), but the way she purposefully uses it in A Room of One s Own is worth
noting. Woolf works to alienate her reader from the argument she makes in order to reevaluate the
social structures at work behind her argument; she makes the argument that women writers need
money and room of their own to be successful writers, but, through her alienation of the reader, she
also wants them to incite political change through them. In this way, Woolf s alienation becomes
Brechtian in nature. Although Room

Price Gouging In The United States
The idea of price gouging can have many different perspectives on it, and is very controversial.
Price gouging is when a seller spikes their prices of goods, services, or other purchase products to
a level higher than reasonable. Ethically, I do agree with the fact that merchants shouldn t sky
rocket their product prices during a state of emergency price gouging.
Illegally, price gouging is continuing to affect our labor market and offset the cost of living in
many states. Price gouging is continuing to affect the health of many people due to pharmaceutical
companies and their major increases in price. Lastly, price gouging just is unjust, immoral, and
against the law in states. While there are no federal regulations to price gouging and ... Show more

Price gouging occurs when a merchant drastically raises their prices on daily necessities. When
setting cities living wage and cost of living, the cost of daily necessities plays a role. Cost of
living is the amount of money needed to sustain a certain level of living, including basic expenses
such as housing, food, taxes and health care.
A book called The fundamentals of minimum wage fixing by Francois Eyraud and Catherine
Saget talks brief about cost of living and how it is incorporated into minimum wage. The authors
gave different ways on how the cost of living is determined. According to the two, they shared that
the cost of living is determined by the price of goods (standard necessities to live), and wage
statistics submitted by the United States Department of Labor (Eyraud, Saget, 2005). Both living
wage and cost of living differentiates by state and cities. Cost of living effects how the government
set the nations minimum wage. When merchants continuously raise prices of daily necessities and
they are unreasonable, it can affect the cost of living. To prevent this trickle down effect, the
United States government should create federal regulations on price gouging to prevent an increase
in cost of living which then leads to an increase in minimum wage, which then leads to possible jobs

While the conflict between justice and mercy plays a key role in determining the outcome of The
Merchant of Venice, this conflict is even more important because it provides a setting for the
contrast between the rigid law and rules of the Old Testamentand the concepts of mercy and
forgiveness as taught by Christ in the New Testament. It is in the climactic trial scene that The
Duke, hoping Shylock will excuse Antonio s penalty, asks him, How shall thou hope for mercy
rend ring none? He is referring to expectations of judgment in the afterlife. However, so is Shylock,
when he counters, What judgment shall I dread doing no wrong? This exchange perfectly presents
this conflict between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shylock, for his part, has indeed become fierce in his desire to extract vengeance by forcing the
death of Antonio.
The trial scene is constructed from a Christian perspective, and it highlights the dichotomy of Old
Testament legalism as opposed to the New Testament gospel of grace and forgiveness. The Duke,
Bassanio and finally Portia, all plead with Shylock to show mercy, but Shylock s hate has made
him immune to reason, as he is totally absorbed by a passion for revenge.
The Merchant of Venicedraws upon laws and rules of Venice and those stipulated in contracts and
wills. Two things are emphasized when the trial begins. Firstly, it is clear that Shylock will not
show any mercy and relinquish his right to a pound of Antonio s flesh as stipulated in the bond,
and secondly, that Shylock has the rule of law on his side. Antonio himself says, The Duke cannot
deny the course of law: For the commoditie that strangers have / With us in Venice, if it be denied,
Will much impeach the justice of the State, Since that the trade and profit of the city / Consisteth
of all Nations. Shylock demands the strict interpretation of those laws, and seeks justice in its most
severe and uncompromised form. He demands Antonio s death for forfeiting his bond. quot; The
pound of flesh which I demand of him / Is dearly bought, tis mine and I will have it quot;.
In response to Shylock s Old Testament cry for bloody justice Portia answers with a speech that

Examples Of Social Construction In The Chrysalids
The Problem of Social Construction, Social Convention vs. The Real Human Life Social
convention and social construction are both constructed by people, in a way for them to
describe their behaviors and opinions. Everyone is created and loved by God, for they are
unique in their own ways, with a mind and heart, and with dreams and hopes. The Chrysalids is a
story that shows how imperfect society truly is. In The Chrysalids, David and his crew are
considered different, which is against the Waknuk creed. People who are born differently or are not
the true image of God, are considered blasphemies, which is not welcomed in the city. When social
conventionand social construction go against reality, nobody knows what to believe in.

In The Chrysalids, a deviation is anyone or anything that does not follow the creed of Waknuk:
Man should have one body, one head, two arms and two legs, that each hand should have four
fingers and one thumb: that each finger should bear a flat fingernail... (Ch.1: pg. 10 11) and
each leg shall be jointed twice and have one foot, and each foot five toes, and each toe shall end
with a flat nail (Ch.1: pg.13) People of a different sex or colour, or generally different from what
the Waknuk people would consider normal, would be treated unfairly. These people are
considered deviations, and are unable to complete certain tasks due to how they are born. In our
world, people may not get jobs due to their gender or age. Due to social convention, it is not very
often that we see a female construction worker, or a female police officer. The eldest son. The heir.
Waknuk should be mine. (Ch.14: pg.160)

Evil Definition Essay
Evil is immorality without reasonable justification. Evil is harming another for no reason other
than personal satisfaction or achievement. Evil is the premeditated act of damage to another
person, whether it s emotional, physical, or financial. In my opinion, pure evil isn t common.
Looking at a criminal s past, for example, and seeing the decisions they faced, one is able to
understand or even sympathize with their actions. This changes certain acts from evilto a label that s
still horrid, but allows the public to comprehend the reasons behind the crime. Say, for instance,
a woman of 40 murders her partner and young children. Many might call this woman evil.
However, if we see that she s been suffering from schizophrenia and her insurance told her they
wouldn t cover her new prescription, we start to understand how she was in an altered state of
mind. Piling on stress and the extent of her illness, we see how she could have killed her family.
This explanation exonerates her from the label of evil .... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I grew up in a culture where my immediate family was democratic, and I went to an extremely
liberal arts private school for 13 years. I was raised to judge only after knowing all of the facts,
which influences how I see evil. Knowing one s backstory humanizes them. This is important; we
have to humanize every defendant in court or they just become a number, and the criminal justice
system has failed. I haven t had any personal experiences with evil. From a religious point of view,
I m an agnostic but I was raised Jewish. I never believed in God, and I remember little of the
teachings of Judaism. Therefore, being non religious has affected my view of evil in the sense that
I don t believe in the conservative values of evil (homosexuality, for instance). Recent events and

Causes Of Failure Of Bridge Roof Vibration
CAUSES OF FAILURE OF BRIDGE
Deck Vibration Since the well known bridge, Tacoma Narrows Bridge was destroyed in 1940 the
designers and owners started to concern more about the stability of bridge deck. For short and long
term of monitoring the deck, the instruments of geophysical are increase used which are;
1.accelerometers and tilt meter
2.strain gages
Figure1: Tacoma Narrows Bridge with severe vibration
Figure 2: Tacoma Narrows Bridge after collapse due to wind fluttering
These are several problems that had been summarized;
1.The stability of aerodynamic of bridge deck when subject to high wind.
2.Some effect on stability of bridge decks for long term, impact by fatigue that caused by cyclic
stresses which are including increased loading from the traffic, temperature changes and trucks that
have heavy load.
3.The bridge decks stability during earthquakes.
All the geophysical techniques are applied to overcome problems above. Those are principally
specific to the vibration monitoring and some environmental monitoring which is vibration
monitoring including strains, displacements, rotation and acceleration, while environmental
monitoring including wind and temperature. All of these are affected
Below are two major solutions to overcome fluttering problems of cable bridges;
1.Modification of the deck
To create more stiff deck, the shape and configuration of the bridge deck must be modified (with
respect to the length of the span).

Sylvia was of German descent, a possible Nazi, and their marriage only lasted about eight
months. Later, in 1955, Salinger remarried the daughter of a high profile art critic Claire

and producing two children Margaret and Matthew. Claire filed for divorce in 1966 and claimed
that if the marriage had continued further it would, seriously injure her health and endanger her
reason. This implies that domestic violence and/or mental manipulations may have taken place.
Douglas was not the only one to have implied this, Joyce Maynard describes Salinger as an
obsessive lover after he kicked her out after only ten months of living together. Jerome moved on
and was romantically involved with an actor, Ellen Joyce, then later married Colleen O Neill, to
whom he would remain married to until his death in 2010. The Catcher in the Rye became one of
the most influential and famous literary masterpieces of the twentieth century. Many readers had

presented within it, while others thought Holden s quest to find something pure in a phony world
was an immoral view. Today, the novel has been incorporated into high school curriculum, where

Essay on The Death Of Liberal America
Americans seem to have lost any sense whatsoever of what liberalism means and what it strives to
insure. Liberals have insisted that tyranny can only be combated by the multiplication and
fragmentation of power. A free society is one in which there are various centers of power, various
positions from which people have the ability to influence decisions. That s the whole point behind
creating three branches of government, the vaunted separation of powers. Liberalism aims to insure
peace and prevent tyranny in pluralistic societies. Liberalism strives to place lots of individual
actions outside the pale of politics and beyond interference from the state or other powers. And,
culturally, it strives to promote tolerance, where tolerance is,... Show more content on

Democracy has it benefits, with the most obvious being peace. The most important corollary
benefit is that the opposition party plays a key role in keeping the party in power honest. It is
obviously in the opposition party s interest to keep the public informed about the missteps and
misdeeds of the administration party. The opposition party is as crucial to ongoing publicity as a
free press. And publicity is a crucial safeguard (not the only one, but a crucial one) against
governmental abuse of power. Democracy, in short, prevents one party rule.
So what s the problem in 2005? Up until now American democracy has been remarkably stable
with the notable exceptions of the Civil War and the Civil Rights conflicts. But now, the
Republicans have launched a full scale assault upon democracy at home. This assault is about
grabbing and using power, and it also reflects an impoverished view of democracy basically one that
limits democracy to free elections. The understanding of democracy tends toward the plebiscite and
toward the establishment of a strong leader, usually one who promises to sweep aside the
complexities, compromises, frustrations, and inefficiencies introduced by parliamentary janglings
and an independent judiciary. The plebiscite has almost always favored right wing leaders impatient
with legal and institutional impediments to forceful action. In other words the plebiscite is perfect
for establishing the tyranny of the majority. By emphasizing a direct, even

The Causes Of Fascism
Fascism is a widely debated topic, many theories are proposed regarding its origins, its appeal,
the support it gained from big business and the cooperation it received from the Catholic Church.
What I believe to be an inalienable truth is that early signs of fascism are firmly rooted in the First
World War. To argue that the First World War caused fascism
however is debatable, I will hold the
belief that the First World War was a catalyst for fascism, that fascism as Roger Eatwell puts was
embryonic rather than fully formed (R. Eatwell, Fascism: A History) and that the war created a
unique environment and opportunity for the nurturing and growth of fascist ideologies. I will
discuss what I believe to be the most potent factors that pushed the growth of fascism, the economic
crisis of the 1920s and the subsequent weakening of western liberal democracies, the
discontentment and chagrin of the Italian and German public towards victory and defeat
respectively and most importantly, the threat of Communism and its political manipulation.
Hobsbawm argues that, fascism did not exist before 1919 (Hobsbawm, Age of Extremes). This
paper follows that belief and it allows us to pull our focus towards the time directly post war. It is
in this time that I will argue that the seeds of fascism were planted and that the unstable socio
economic landscape of Europe resulted in volatile nationalist politics in the 1920s and allowed for
the resultant fascism to take root and to grow at an

The Neuman Systems Model Ginger Weber University of South Carolina Upstate Abstract The
purpose of this paper is to discuss the impact of the Nueman Systems Model on the world of
healthcare through the use of research done in two studies by Giggliotti (2007) and Bourdeanu,
Dee (2013) and the affect the NSM has had on nursing education as shown by Clark in the
Neuman Systems Model Trustee Group records. This paper uses these examples to represent a
large body of research and educational programs based on the comprehensiveness, validity, and
soundness of the NSM philosophies and concepts. The Neuman Systems Model Fundamentals of
Nursing defines nursing theory as that which differentiates nursing from other disciplines and
activities by serving the purpose of describing, explaining, predicting, and controlling desired
outcomes of nursing practices. (Taylor, Lillis, LeMone, Lynn, 2011,G 14). The focus of this paper
will be the Neuman Systems Model and its impact on the world of nursing. Neuman believed that
health was living energy that is evaluated by the amount of agreement between five variables

Essay On Impact Of Poverty On Child Development
Poverty has a large impact on a child s development, the child will be affected in a number of
different ways involving their education, health, behaviour and their intellect. When a child lives in
a household where their basic needs are being compromised it is often due to the family having to
use the resources that they do have access to for other factors that contribute to the whole family.
As the family have limited amount of resources it is often found the children have less access to
opportunities than those who aren t living in poverty. This essay will explore the negative impacts
of poverty on a child s health within developing countries, there are two forms of poverty, relative
and absolute, however it is more common for absolute poverty to occur within these developing
countries.
Malnutrition is commonly found to be associated with poverty, often it is due to the lack of income
into the household which restricts the family to the food products that they can buy. The food that
the family are able to afford are often low in essential nutrients and vitamins, these food products
are cheap to buy and easy to cook. Malnutrition is defined as the lack of consumption of nutrients
which then leads to further health problems. Being malnourished can impact a child s development,
including weight loss, growth issues and cognitive issues. Having the correct nutrition intake is
required within childhood to ensure that the child develops in the correct way, it is extremely

Software Is Tightly Integrated With The Matlab Environment

Non linear operators:
A main advantage of using tools such as Simulink is the ability to simulate non linear systems and

The Tragedy Of The Red Tails
Films do not simply give someone words and ask them to create a world of their own; films
offer a complete other dimension that the viewer belongs to for a few brief hours. Without films
like Saving Private Ryan, society would not be able to experience the emotions of, in this case,
war, but the emotions of other people in general. Those who watched Milk for the first time
were suddenly smacked in the face by the reality of what it was like to stand up for their rights.
The audiences of Red Tails saw what it was like to get treated like you were less than someone
else, and how people needed to prove their worth to others. None of these films had anything to
do with events current from their times of release, but sometimes it is good to empathize with
our ancestors. Movies do not need to only ever show people being oppressed in order to connect
with an audience though, sometimes it is good to just allow people to feel raw emotions. Crash
addresses the oppressed by labeling everyone as oppressed and by also labeling everyone as the
oppressor, allowing the filmto truly connect to all audiences. Paul Haggis uses the film Crash to
portray what stereotypes people really think in, using the language as a vessel to take the audience
within their own subconscious.

people, along with a few side groups, brush up in each other s lives. The tagline Things are not

Relationship Between Colonial And Native American Relations
The Colonial Indian relations have been very poor throughout the very first contact with each other.
The Native Americans often raided the villages of European settlers to gain revenge on the
Europeans who had pillaged their land for slaves and other resources the colonial settlers needed at
that time. The colonial government also had a role in the poor relations between the two. Very
often the government would make treaties and break those treaties. The relations between the
Native Americans and European colonists were very poor and hostile. At the time of their arrival in
North America, the Europeans were very unfamiliar with the new territory that they had just

Often, the government would make treaties with the tribes of Native Americans near their colonies
and settlements and would break them. The Colonial government also claimed ownership of the
Native American land and forced the tribes to migrate elsewhere. The treaties were often read by
someone who understood very little of the Native language, making it hard for the tribe members to
understand. In the seventeenth century, European settlers began negotiating with the Indians for
territory. These negotiations were usually piecemeal: individuals, companies, and townships
worked out their own deals with the locals. This patchwork of agreements caused confusion.
There was no central organization to keep track of the deals. Some did not care about

Essay on Private Motivations for War in The Iliad
Private Motivations for War in The Iliad
Wars are often complex in nature and are fought for diverse reasons.
In the Iliad, powerful gods, great nations, and heroic people all fight for
different reasons. Each has private motivations to fight the war. These
private motivations are of special interest, because they help define the
consequences and outcomes of the war. The universal war of the gods, social
war of the Greeks and Trojans, and the war for Achilles honor are private
motivations of the Trojan war. These private motivations seem to influence

lead to another outbreak of war between the Greeks and Trojans. The universal
war of Athena and Hera versus Aphrodite had Zeus so caught up in it that he did
not want the social war to end. A god in the universal war once again created
the social war between Troy and Greece. The universal war was the cause of the
social war of Greece and Troy.
The private war of Achilles honor was an outgrowth of the social war
between the Greeks and the Trojans. During the social war, Apollo grew angry at
the Greeks for the abuse of his priest, Chryses. The Greeks had abused Chryses
when Agamemnon took Chryses daughter, Chryseis, during the raid of the town

Religious discrimination has impeded the right and ability of Jews, Catholics , and Muslims to
practice freedom of religion rights worldwide. One of the most horrific examples of discrimination
resulted from discrimination against Jews, and was called The Holocaust. Catholics... Show more

If a Jew practiced freely during turbulent times such as The Holocaust and the Russian pogrom,
then he would most likely be killed or severely injured. The people of the world have been blind
and judgmental many times. A different culture and different beliefs caused Judaism and the other
ways of life to butt heads. This caused freedom of religion to be removed from the lives of the
Jewish people experiencing these tragic trials.
Discrimination against Catholicism restricts Catholics ability to practice freedom of religion.
Discrimination against Catholics began from the creation of this religion; however, one of the
most prominent times that it occurred was during presidential elections in America. It arose when
Al Smith, a Catholic ran for president. His career started in New York as a governor, and soon
after ... he had become one of the most powerful and popular...politicians of that time. Nevertheless
along with popularity came disapproval. In 1924, he was denied the presidential nomination
because the Ku Klux Klan objected to his religious beliefs. Shortly after, he was the unanimous
choice for the 1928 election over Herbert Hoover, but the religious issue continually haunted Smith
throughout the campaign (Dolan 1). During the campaign, the KKK burned crosses wherever he
traveled, and many groups portrayed Smith as a drunkard, making up slogans such as A vote for

What Is Oedipus False Certainty
Bernard Knox states that Oedipus fall was due the claim that, [T]hese attributes of divinity
knowledge, certainty, justice are all qualities Oedipus thought he possessed and that is why he was
the perfect example of the inadequacy of human knowledge, certainty, and justice. In Oedipus the
King by Sophocles, Oedipusbelieved that he possessed certainty of knowledge and justice due to
his hubris, which led to his downfall. Oedipus tragic downfall came about from his false certainty
of knowledge, his incautious judgement and actions, and delusion of self justice. He curses the
killer of Laius, not knowing that it was himself. Due to Oedipus eventual discovery of the truth, he
is cursed at the end of the play.

Oedipus thinks he is acting justly by cursing the killer of Laius, but because he does not have full
knowledge, he curses himself. Throughout the play, Oedipus is told multiple times to cease his
search because it will lead to his downfall. Jocasta cries, For the gods sake, if you have any care
for your own life, forbear this search! (138). However, due to Oedipus urge for justice, he states, I
must not hear of not discovering the whole truth (138). Due to Oedipus false certainty, he wishes to
discover the truth, which will lead to his downfall. Justice is served through Oedipus discovery of

Deception in The Tempest Essay
The passage below is found in the opening act of one of Shakespeare s most illusive plays of
control and manipulation. The word deception is defined as the act of misleading or to trick, cheat,
lie, and mislead . From this definition, it is obvious that deception is normally perceived to be evil
and results in the harm of others mentally and physically. It leads to broken hearts, untold truths, or
even unpunished murder. However, in Shakespeare s The Tempest, deception is used as a virtuous
art to manipulate an unjust situation and rectify it.
Know thus far forth. By accident most strange, bountiful Fortune (Now my dear lady) hath mine
enemies Brought to this shore; and by my prescience I find my zenith doth depend upon A ... Show

Although, the normally evil deception is used, Prospero uses it in such a way so that no harm is
brought to anyone, and all the characters are brought to their rightful positions by the play s
conclusion. Through his own works he changes the minds of his enemies (Tillyard 120). All of
the action develops in a world which defies nature, so the events are more believable . The island
is not only uncharted, it is one on which anything can happen (Knox 128). In the words of Gonzalo:
All torment, trouble, wonder, and amazement Inhabits here. Some heavenly power guide us Out of
this fearful country! (Shakespeare 78)
Miranda had been bred up in the island with her father and a monster only: she did not know, as
others do, what sort of creatures were in a ship (Coleridge 109). In fact, Miranda knew basically
nothing about her past or her identity until the start of the play. Her father has, in a way, been
deceiving her throughout her entire life. Even throughout the course of the play, Prospero is not
completely open with his daughter. Instead, he puts her to sleep for a period of time so that she
does not interfere with his plan. Through this deception her father was not trying to harm her in any
way but rather to protect her from the vicious truth.
The characters which were on the ship are now separated into various groups and spread apart
from one another across the island. The first group Prospero

Compare And Contrast Determinism And Free Will
Determinism and free will are regarded as two opposite sides, because most people think that they
are incompatible with each other. But actually they are not. Determinism draws a picture of
causality in the frame of laws of nature. That is to say, every event has a cause. From deterministic
point of view, free willis uncaused, so it rejects free will completely. On the other hand, opponents
of free will reject determinism. However, there is a third option, a softer way to solve free will
problem, namely, compatibilism. I believe compatibilism is a better way because it offers a
solution which should be taken into acount. To understand what compatibilism is, first, I need to
explain what determinism and free will are briefly. Free will is the ability to make choice by
taking moral responsibility. Causal determinism is that every event has cause and effect in the light
of laws of nature. According to incompatibilism, these two term are opposite of each other.
However, compatibilism doesn t regard free will and determinism as opposite sides. According to
compatibilism, both determinism and free will are consistent with each other. Because free will...

That is, all that existince is material world. So, material causes for every event and every event
follows necessarily from it causes. As materialism takes a side in determinism, dualism support
existence of free will, because dualism assumes that mind is independent from laws of nature.
Some libertarians claim that we have souls which are nonphysical and independent from laws of
nature, which have similar aspects with dualism. To illustrate, Descartes well known sentence
Cogito ergo sum is based on thinking which accepts mind as separate from body. In other words,
mind doesn t belong the world of laws of nature. The contrast between determinism and free will is
supported by other beliefs such as dualism and materialism, as

Fingerprint Identification
1. INTRODUCTION In order to protect users of computer systems and to secure network based
transactions, demand is increasing for improved user authentication procedures to establish the
identity of an actual user and to bar access to a terminal to anyone who is unauthorized. Personal
identification using biometrics, i.e., a person s physical or behavioral characteristics has come to
attract increased attention as a possible solution to this issue and one that might offer reliable
systems at a reasonable cost. While traditionally this technology has been available only with such
expensive, high end systems as those used in law enforcement and other government applications,
today many personal level applications have also become... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

SecureFinger , some actual examples of fingerprint based personal identification systems and large
scale fingerprint identification systems(AFIS). Fingerprint User Interface (FpUI), a new type of
application of this technology used to enhance human machine interactions will also be considered.
3. FINGERPRINT SENSING TECHNOLOGY:
A Fingerprint is a pattern of fine ridges and valleys (spaces between ridges) on the surface of a
finger and fingerprint sensor makes a digitized image of it. The sensing resolution is 500ppi
(pixel per inch; also known as 500dpi, i.e., dots per inch) in most cases, which is equivalent to 20
pixels in 1 millimeter. The obtained image size is typically in the range of between 300*300 and
512*512 pixels, which makes the area covering the fingerprint between 15 to 25 millimeters square.
FINGERPRINT SENSING TYPES:
a. Conventional prism Type Optical Sensor
Optical sensors using a prism have long been used as a common (and formerly the only) capture
device. In them, the light from an LED illuminates a finger placed on a prism and its reflected
image is captured by a small, optical sensing device (e.g., a CCD or CMOS imager chip), as in

Real life doesn t run on a schedule; even the smallest decision can alter the direction of the future. In the suburbs so close in contact with uncontrollable chaos, I am not can never be perfectly content. Instead, I find my peace in the middle of my Grandfather s cornfields. Popular transgender people such as Laverne Cox and Caitlin Jenner are cultural representatives of this group. Filipino society has also experienced an emergence of LGBT and gendernon conformity. As reported by the United States Agency of International Development (USAID), reference was made to transvestism and crossing gender in the 16th and 17th century with the babaylan (Tan 8). Even if modern Filipino society tolerates trans personalities such as congresswoman Geraldine Roman, and Jake Zyrus, a trans male singer formerly known as Charice, there has yet to be true justice and respect for the trans community in even the smallest of circumstances. A transgender as defined by Cambridge Dictionary is, someone who feels that they are not the same gender (= sex) as the physical body they were born with, or who does not fit easily into being either a male or a female. Given their gender identity differing from their sex assigned at birth, a lot of the behavioral aspects in their lifestyle coordinate with the gender they identify with. A specific aspect of this would be the restroom that these trans people use, that being the opposite gender to what sex they were born as, or in short the gender of which they identify with. Perception Of Alcohol Ian Markle 10/03/2016 Community vs Paranoia The influence of alcohol has been everywhere in human history and is undoubtedly the most dominant psychoactive substance in every human culture. It was critical for developing countries where alcohol was key to trade. (Awkward) Alcohol was one of the main three psychoactive products (with tobacco and caffeine) which helped drive the globalization of trade from the 17th century. Today, the consumption of alcohol has become more omnipresent because of how diversified drinks have become. Drinking is an increasingly globalized cultural practice because alcohol is a substance with a global history. Producers of these alcoholic beverages tend to be large corporations reliant on innovative marketing techniques. The global alcohol industry is also trying to expand into developing countries while continuing to collect profits in the saturated markets of North America and Europe. Thesis: No one knows for certain as to when humans first produced alcohol. The original alcoholic drink could have been created from berries or honey. But according to (quote), the discovery of late Stone Age beer containers dating back to 8000 BCE demonstrates that humans have been fermenting alcoholic drinks for at least 10,000 years. Since then alcohol has been produced, consumed, and traded by humans for thousands of years. An early example of alcohol trade happens in 3000 B.C., early Mesopotamian farmers realized that the alcohol surplus they produced ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The main negative throughout the years has been that people on welfare will never attempt to find a job and just live off the government, but recently there has been a lot of attention brought specifically to the recipients that are drug abusers. Therefore, some taxpayers are calling for a system in which recipients are drug tested prior to receiving aid, but these systems are strongly opposed by those who are current members of welfare. Alzheimer s disease was first diagnosed to be a medical condition back in 1906 by Dr. Alois Alzheimer. Having Down syndrome can also increase your risk of developing Alzheimer s as well as diabetes. Diabetes is linked to Alzheimer s due to the fact they have both been linked to cardiovascular diseases. They both exhibit utilization of glucose in the brains. These two diagnoses are so much alike that it is hard to tell an Alzheimer s brain from a diabetic s brain. The manufacturing of insulin in the brain is condensed and the nerve cells are less sensitive. Diabetic drugs are now being tested to see if they could possibly help out Alzheimer patients. Another factor I found very interesting was that people with less than 6 years of some type of higher education appear to have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer s disease. From these studies, it was assumed that the brain stimulation students receive actually provides some type of protective barrier for the brain therefore not allowing of the onset of the deterioration of the mind. Now that s a good slogan for college and higher education if you ask me. Scientists have actually come up with some preventative measures against Alzheimer s and the onset of this horrendous disease. Physical activity, brain stimulation (such as puzzles, games, regularly reading, watching television, and any other type of social activity), nutritious diet, and also there is an ongoing search for a vaccine. • 18. Religious And Civil Life During The 19th Century One can hardly speak of the Haskalah in Eastern Europe without referencing its relationship to Hasidism. Beginning in eighteenth century Poland Lithuanian area, the Bal Shem Tov created a brand of simple and extremely pietistic Judaism appealing most to uneducated working class Jews. Hasidism viewed Western ideas, language, and even dress as a threat to traditional Jewish society. In addition, religious and civil life were inseparable, unlike their western coreligionist. These values brought Haskalah in Eastern Europe into a continuous and often tense struggle with the traditional Jewish community. Unlike their Western coreligionist, Eastern European Jewish communities were still quite traditional by the early 19th century. The Hasidic movement strengthening traditional Jewish life and filled the leadership gap left by the government abolishment of autonomous communal structures known as kahals. At the same time, the maskilim were also exerting increasing influence and leadership among Eastern Jewish communities, and viewed Hasidism as outdated separatist preventing Jews from modernizing. To this end, maskilim sought to discredit Hasidism particularly with state authorities. Journals such as Ha Karmel, Razsvet, and Kerem Hemed, carried the clever satire from maskilim such as Joseph Perl and Isaac Erter s Gilgul Nefesh (Transmigration of the Soul) portraying Hasidism as backward, and purposefully antagonistic to government efforts towards Jewish social and political ... The Alienation Effect in A Room of One s Own The Alienation Effect in A Room of One s Own But, Woolf starts A Room of One s Own, you may say, we asked you to speak about women and fiction what, has that got to do with a room of one s own? (3). This opening is the interruption to a thought that we didn t hear; it is part of a speech that we aren t in the audience for. The reader has barely ventured into the text, and already he is left disoriented. Instead of introducing her reader to her argument, Woolf immediately and intentionally puts this reader at odds with her work. These lines do not comfortably introduce her thinking; they charge us with the task of both discovering and analyzing the argument that Woolf plans to make there is no room for the passive reader here. Throughout the text, Woolf works to estrange the audience from becoming emotionally involved in the text by taking that which is familiar and making it strange. The estrangement that is used in the text isn t unique to Woolf s work (CITE THIS SHIT), but the way she purposefully uses it in A Room of One s Own is worth noting. Woolf works to alienate her reader from the argument she makes in order to reevaluate the social structures at work behind her argument; she makes the argument that women writers need money and room of their own to be successful writers, but, through her alienation of the reader, she also wants them to incite political change through them. Illegally, price gouging is continuing to affect our labor market and offset the cost of living in many states. Price gouging occurs when a merchant drastically raises their prices on daily necessities. When setting cities living wage and cost of living, the cost of daily necessities plays a role. Cost of living is the amount of money needed to sustain a certain level of living, including basic expenses such as housing, food, taxes and health care. A book called The fundamentals of minimum wage fixing by Francois Eyraud and Catherine Saget talks brief about cost of living and how it is incorporated into minimum wage. The authors gave different ways on how the cost of living is determined. According to the two, they shared that the cost of living is determined by the price of goods (standard necessities to live), and wage statistics submitted by the United States Department of Labor (Eyraud, Saget, 2005). Both living wage and cost of living differentiates by state and cities. Cost of living effects how the government set the nations minimum wage. When merchants continuously raise prices of daily necessities and they are unreasonable, it can affect the cost of living. The Duke, Bassanio and finally Portia, all plead with Shylock to show mercy, but Shylock s hate has made him immune to reason, as he is totally absorbed by a passion for revenge. The Merchant of Venicedraws upon laws and rules of Venice and those stipulated in contracts and wills. Two things are emphasized when the trial begins. Firstly, it is clear that Shylock will not show any mercy and relinquish his right to a pound of Antonio s flesh as stipulated in the bond, and secondly, that Shylock has the rule of law on his side. Antonio himself says, The Duke cannot deny the course of law: For the commoditie that strangers have / With us in Venice, if it be denied, Will much impeach the justice of the State, Since that the trade and profit of the city / Consisteth of all Nations. Shylock demands the strict interpretation of those laws, and seeks justice in its most severe and uncompromised form. He demands Antonio s death for forfeiting his bond. quot; The pound of flesh which I demand of him / Is dearly bought, tis mine and I will have it quot;. Examples Of Social Construction In The Chrysalids The Problem of Social Construction, Social Convention vs. The Real Human Life Social convention and social construction are both constructed by people, in a way for them to describe their behaviors and opinions. Everyone is created and loved by God, for they are unique in their own ways, with a mind and heart, and with dreams and hopes. The Chrysalids is a story that shows how imperfect society truly is. In The Chrysalids, David and his crew are considered different, which is against the Waknuk creed. • 23. Evil Definition Essay Evil is immorality without reasonable justification. Evil is harming another for no reason other than personal satisfaction or achievement. Evil is the premeditated act of damage to another person, whether it s emotional, physical, or financial. In my opinion, pure evil isn t common. Looking at a criminal s past, for example, and seeing the decisions they faced, one is able to understand or even sympathize with their actions. This changes certain acts from evilto a label that s still horrid, but allows the public to comprehend the reasons behind the crime. Say, for instance, a woman of 40 murders her partner and young children. Many might call this woman evil. However, if we see that she s been suffering from schizophrenia and her insurance told her they wouldn t cover her new prescription, we start to understand how she was in an altered state of mind. Piling on stress and the extent of her illness, we see how she could have killed her family. This explanation exonerates her from the label of evil .... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Liberals have insisted that tyranny can only be combated by the multiplication and fragmentation of power. That s the whole point behind creating three branches of government, the vaunted separation of powers. Liberalism aims to insure peace and prevent tyranny in pluralistic societies. The opposition party is as crucial to ongoing publicity as a free press. And publicity is a crucial safeguard (not the only one, but a crucial one) against governmental abuse of power. Democracy, in short, prevents one party rule. So what s the problem in 2005? Up until now American democracy has been remarkably stable with the notable exceptions of the Civil War and the Civil Rights conflicts. But now, the Republicans have launched a full scale assault upon democracy at home. This assault is about grabbing and using power, and it also reflects an impoverished view of democracy basically one that limits democracy to free elections. The understanding of democracy tends toward the plebiscite and toward the establishment of a strong leader, usually one who promises to sweep aside the complexities, compromises, frustrations, and inefficiencies introduced by parliamentary janglings and an independent judiciary. The plebiscite has almost always favored right wing leaders impatient with legal and institutional impediments to forceful action. • 31. The Causes Of Fascism Fascism is a widely debated topic, many theories are proposed regarding its origins, its appeal, the support it gained from big business and the cooperation it received from the Catholic Church. What I believe to be an inalienable truth is that early signs of fascism are firmly rooted in the First World War. To argue that the First World War caused fascism however is debatable, I will hold the belief that the First World War was a catalyst for fascism, that fascism as Roger Eatwell puts was embryonic rather than fully formed (R. Eatwell, Fascism: A History) and that the war created a unique environment and opportunity for the nurturing and growth of fascist ideologies. I will discuss what I believe to be the most potent factors that pushed the growth of fascism, the economic crisis of the 1920s and the subsequent weakening of western liberal democracies, the discontentment and chagrin of the Italian and German public towards victory and defeat respectively and most importantly, the threat of Communism and its political manipulation. Hobsbawm argues that, fascism did not exist before 1919 (Hobsbawm, Age of Extremes). This paper follows that belief and it allows us to pull our focus towards the time directly post war. It is in this time that I will argue that the seeds of fascism were planted and that the unstable socio economic landscape of Europe resulted in volatile nationalist politics in the 1920s and allowed for the resultant fascism to take root and to grow at an ... Without films like Saving Private Ryan, society would not be able to experience the emotions of, in this case, war, but the emotions of other people in general. Those who watched Milk for the first time were suddenly smacked in the face by the reality of what it was like to stand up for their rights. The audiences of Red Tails saw what it was like to get treated like you were less than someone else, and how people needed to prove their worth to others. None of these films had anything to do with events current from their times of release, but sometimes it is good to empathize with our ancestors. He curses the killer of Laius, not knowing that it was himself. Due to Oedipus eventual discovery of the truth, he is cursed at the end of the play. Throughout the play, ... • 43. Deception in The Tempest Essay The passage below is found in the opening act of one of Shakespeare s most illusive plays of control and manipulation. The word deception is defined as the act of misleading or to trick, cheat, lie, and mislead . From this definition, it is obvious that deception is normally perceived to be evil and results in the harm of others mentally and physically. It leads to broken hearts, untold truths, or even unpunished murder. However, in Shakespeare s The Tempest, deception is used as a virtuous art to manipulate an unjust situation and rectify it. Know thus far forth. By accident most strange, bountiful Fortune (Now my dear lady) hath mine enemies Brought to this shore; and by my prescience I find my zenith doth depend upon A ... Although, the normally evil deception is used, Prospero uses it in such a way so that no harm is brought to anyone, and all the characters are brought to their rightful positions by the play s conclusion. Through his own works he changes the minds of his enemies (Tillyard 120). All of the action develops in a world which defies nature, so the events are more believable . The island is not only uncharted, it is one on which anything can happen (Knox 128). In the words of Gonzalo: All torment, trouble, wonder, and amazement Inhabits here. Some heavenly power guide us Out of this fearful country! (Shakespeare 78) Miranda had been bred up in the island with her father and a monster only: she did not know, as others do, what sort of creatures were in a ship (Coleridge 109). In fact, Miranda knew basically nothing about her past or her identity until the start of the play. Her father has, in a way, been deceiving her throughout her entire life. Even throughout the course of the play, Prospero is not completely open with his daughter. Instead, he puts her to sleep for a period of time so that she does not interfere with his plan. Through this deception her father was not trying to harm her in any way but rather to protect her from the vicious truth. The characters which were on the ship are now separated into various groups and spread apart from one another across the island. The first group Prospero ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Compare And Contrast Determinism And Free Will Determinism and free will are regarded as two opposite sides, because most people think that they are incompatible with each other. But actually they are not. Determinism draws a picture of causality in the frame of laws of nature. That is to say, every event has a cause. From deterministic point of view, free willis uncaused, so it rejects free will completely. On the other hand, opponents of free will reject determinism. However, there is a third option, a softer way to solve free will problem, namely, compatibilism. I believe compatibilism is a better way because it offers a solution which should be taken into acount. To understand what compatibilism is, first, I need to explain what determinism and free will are briefly. Free will is the ability to make choice by taking moral responsibility. Causal determinism is that every event has cause and effect in the light of laws of nature. According to incompatibilism, these two term are opposite of each other. However, compatibilism doesn t regard free will and determinism as opposite sides. According to compatibilism, both determinism and free will are consistent with each other. Because free will... As materialism takes a side in determinism, dualism support existence of free will, because dualism assumes that mind is independent from laws of nature. Some libertarians claim that we have souls which are nonphysical and independent from laws of nature, which have similar aspects with dualism. To illustrate, Descartes well known sentence Cogito ergo sum is based on thinking which accepts mind as separate from body. In other words, mind doesn t belong the world of laws of nature. The contrast between determinism and free will is supported by other beliefs such as dualism and materialism, as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Fingerprint Identification 1. INTRODUCTION In order to protect users of computer systems and to secure network based transactions, demand is increasing for improved user authentication procedures to establish the identity of an actual user and to bar access to a terminal to anyone who is unauthorized. Personal identification using biometrics, i.e., a person s physical or behavioral characteristics has come to attract increased attention as a possible solution to this issue and one that might offer reliable systems at a reasonable cost. While traditionally this technology has been available only with such expensive, high end systems as those used in law enforcement and other government applications, today many personal level applications have also become... [pic] Fig.1 Fingerprint based personal Authentication SecureFinger , some actual examples of fingerprint based personal identification systems and large scale fingerprint identification systems(AFIS). Fingerprint User Interface (FpUI), a new type of application of this technology used to enhance human machine interactions will also be considered. 3. FINGERPRINT SENSING TECHNOLOGY: A Fingerprint is a pattern of fine ridges and valleys (spaces between ridges) on the surface of a finger and fingerprint sensor makes a digitized image of it. The sensing resolution is 500ppi (pixel per inch; also known as 500dpi, i.e., dots per inch) in most cases, which is equivalent to 20 pixels in 1 millimeter. The obtained image size is typically in the range of between 300*300 and 512*512 pixels, which makes the area covering the fingerprint between 15 to 25 millimeters square. FINGERPRINT SENSING TYPES: a. Conventional prism Type Optical Sensor Optical sensors using a prism have long been used as a common (and formerly the only) capture device. In them, the light from an LED illuminates a finger placed on a prism and its reflected image is captured by a small, optical sensing device (e.g., a CCD or CMOS imager chip), as in Fig.2. This device operates basically on the principle of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
