Reflection On Becoming An American Sign Language Interpreter
Hello, I m Kasey! I m 25 years old and attend Eastern Kentucky University. I m currently a senior and
in my last semester of the interpreter training program. I was raised on our family farm in the small
rural town of Hodgenville, Kentucky. I moved to different towns around the state until I finally settled
in Lexington, so I could pursue my hopes of becoming an American Sign Language interpreter. I
started learning ASL officially in 2010 and I continue to improve my skills on a daily basis any way I
can! For as long as I remember I have been fascinated with other languages spoken and signed.

The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong. This quote by Mahatma Gandhi
describes the character it takes to forgive an individual of wrongdoing. Forgiveness results in multiple
positive outcomes for both the forgiver and the person being pardoned. Shakespeare s The Tempest,
Keating s I Forgave the Man Who Shot Me and Bettencourt s Triumph of the Heart discuss the
importance of forgiveness in terms of moving on, freeing someone of guilt and finding happiness.
In order to move on from a terrible incident, forgiveness is necessary for both sides. For example, in
Keating s I Forgave the Man Who Shot Me Debbie Baigrie was able to move on despite being shot in

As Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani activist for females, once said, I raise up my voice not so I can shout,
but so that those without a voice can be heard...we cannot succeed when half of us are held back.
Malala is advocating for young females, giving them a voice that they may not have. She is
demonstrating how being a female should be liberating, and women should not feel held back by their
gender. In The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros speaks of a similar idea. As Malala indicates,

Ethnic Diversity In Africa
Almost 75% of all Africans are black, yet Africa is one of the most diverse continent in the world. The
amount of Melanin a person determines skin color, yet people use this to define a person. With a
continent that has so much history, people still assume everyone in the continent have the same color
skin. Africa has a wide range of ethnicities and colors due to the different regions of Africa, the
Indigenous Africans, and the immigrants in Africa. Although Africa has a majority of dark skinned
people, Africa has the largest range of ethnic diversity in the world.
Commencing with Africa s many diverse regions, is the most effective way to illustrate Africa s range
of ethnicity. For Instance, Egyptians, Libyans, and Moroccans are a part of North Africa, and are
considered white. This is because Egyptians, Libyans, and Moroccans were confused with a blonde
haired, blue eyed Swede, having lighter skin tones and straighter hair (Diamond). As clearly executed,
these white people who live in Africa prove that not all Africans are black. In another case, South
Africa, called rainbow nation, is known for their wide range of diversity. More specifically, in
Southern Africa Cape, Coloureds is the name given to an ethnic group composed primarily of persons

diversity, it should hardly be considered that all Africans are black. To put in another way, tribes and
