Osteoarthritis Site Analysis
Analysis of osteoarthritis for each site was conducted in order to determine whether any of the joint
changes in the skeletal remains might indicate changes in physical activity levels before and after
colonization. To better ascertain the differences in the colonial eras, the prehistoric burials from
Corinth and Apollonia were separated from the colonial periods. Even though every site has
individuals of indeterminate sex only a comparison between those individuals for whom sex could be
reasonably estimated was done.
It is instructive to examine the occurrence of osteoarthritis on both the right and left sides of the body.
My initial assessment showed that there are no appreciable differences by side of any given joint;
therefore, only the left side is used for analysis (Table 4). Osteoarthritis of the vertebrae obviously
does not have a side, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthritis is simply counted as a single joint.
Examination of Table 4 indicates that there is a relatively high prevalence of osteoarthritis in three
particular joints; the hip, thoracic vertebrae, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As mentioned previously age was divided into three broad categories; Young (18 34), Middle age (35
49), and Older (50+) adults at each site (Figure 9). From an examination of Figure 9 we see that those
individuals with the higher prevalence of osteoarthritis occur in the Middle age category at Apollonia,
Epidamnus, Corinth, and Lofkënd. Individuals in the Older adult category were impacted more by
osteoarthritis in prehistoric Apollonia. Unexpectedly, prehistoric Corinth remains show an equal
frequency of osteoarthritis occurring in the Young and Middle age adult groups (Figure 9).
Unfortunately, prehistoric Corinth had a very small sample size and this sample may not accurately
represent the Corinthian pre colonial population. (See Appendix A, B, and C for detailed information

Essay on The Story of Doctor Faustus
The Story of Doctor Faustus
The story of Doctor Faustus is a familiar myth, in which the main character sells his soul , makes a
deal with the devil, for something he speciously holds more valuable. There are many versions of this
story in our culture, and it would take quite a time to make note of them all. Most people will have
seen or heard one of the various stories in the for of a book, play, movie, or television show. The
original story of Doctor Faustus, as created by Christopher Marlow, was prevalent to society at the
time because it spoke to people s growing dizzy awareness of their possibilities and capabilities at this
time. By that explanation it seems that the classic Marlow play, Doctor Faustus, would also be a hit ...

In order to complete the adaptation of the play to today s standards, keeping in mind the main
character is a female, and in an attempt to involve the audience in what is going on both
metatheatrically and thematically in the play, there a few scenes in particular which I would highlight
to get some newly made effects and concepts of the story across more effectively. One scene I would
highlight is act 1, scene 3. This is the scene where Faustesse sets out the terms of her pact with the
devil. I would highlight this part for a number of reasons. First off, Faustesse jumps when she first
sees Mephostophilis. I feel this is a very important aspect of the play because in one moment it shows
a theme which is as prevalent at the end of the play as much as it is at the beginning. When Faustesse
jumps at the sight of the Devil and orders him back in a different shape it shows that maybe she is not
necessarily ready to take on the Devil to get what she wants, and that Hell and other such things in the
same league are not really what Faustesse is looking for to solve her problems, and that such
experiences are not really suited to her, and

Evaluating Areas Of Conflict In The Workplace
There are a variety of areas of conflict within my organization. In my opinion the conflicting areas are
as follows lack of communication, leadership skills, management skills, and the lack of productive
workers. As a results of these conflicting areas many of the employees within my organization are
experiencing a lot of stress and are at risk of burning out. In order to reduce the level of stress within
the workplace many of the productive workers have determined that it is more appropriate to do the
bare minimum and are becoming less productive. Those who have burned out no longer have strong
work ethic, instead their professional work ethic has become weak and pretty miniscule. How I work
through these conflicts are pretty simple I take

A Literary Analysis Of Alice Walker sThe Color Purple )
Pretty Colors
(A Literary Analysis on Alice Walker s, The Color Purple) Alice Walker was a writer who influenced
many people in her time, and continues to influence a copious amount of people still today
considering she is still living! Her writing explores multidimensional kinships among women and
embraces the redemptive power of social and political revolution. (Whitted) Her works range from
short poems to long novels that have been read by thousands. In each, she presents several messages.
In the novel, The Color Purple, Walker is able to portray three main messages.
The first message in Purple talks about the importance of family. As an adult, Celie s family was
separated from her, and she was the receiver of the aggressive touch of a man throughout her entire
married life. Celie didn t have a family for quite some time in the literal sense, however she found
family with those around her. Those that she became friends with were the ones that became her
home. They took care of her and made sure that she wouldn t make decisions that she would regret for
the rest of her life. When Celie was in a bad situation, Shug was able to get her out of it, and lead
Celie to a place where she could be happy. In the end, Celie s family is all reunited with her and
everything turns out for the best! Believe in good things to come. (Holland) The main message,
however, is that family may not be the people that are related to you through blood or marriage, but
family just might be in the people that take care of you no matter what.
The second message in Walker s story is about courage. While living in an abusive relationship, Celie
depended on her courage to carry her through the trial that was living with her husband. Nothing the
Celie did was ever enough for her husband, and he let her know that by hurting her in many different
ways. While many did not perceive Celie as being courageous, others around her found her courage as
inspiring. People sought to become like her. Celie is given the chance to truly show her courage,
though, when her friend Shug gives her a way out, taking her to a new state. She is able to leave her
abusive husband behind, and start a new life. She becomes successful and shows those around her

Palestino Masks Research Paper
Venetian Masks Many centuries ago the people of Venice, Italy began wearing Venetian masks to
certain gatherings or even sometimes to conceal their identity while committing crimes. Venetian
masks have become a tradition over the many centuries but remain very beautiful and extremely
intricate. There are many different types of masks, each with their own design, use, history and
significance. (The Mascherade) There is little known about why people started wearing Venetian
masks in the first place, but the first documentation was in the 13th century a document banning men
in masks to throw eggshells full of rose water to women on the street, the same document also bans
gambling and vulgar masks. Many mask designs and names originate from Commedia dell Arte which

They all have unique shapes, decorations and events in which they would be worn to. The columbina
is a mask that covers the top half of the wearer s face and is often heavily decorated with many colors
and other add ons. This mask is typically worn (usually by women) to big, important parties. The
arlecchino is a joker like mask usually with a large headpiece and collar. An arlecchino mask is worn
to an april fools party, halloween, or just for fun. Lastly the bauta is a full face mask with a square jaw
and no mouth., and the bauta was historically used for political reasons but is now worn to make an
impression at parties. (Vivo Masks) Venetian masks are still crafted by hand, so because of this no two
masks are the exact same. There are a lot of materials involved in making a Venetian mask, the base of
the mask is made of materials such as leather, porcelain, paper mache or traditionally glass. Each
mask also has add on decorations such as feathers, rhinestones, gold or silver leaf, or lace that
transform the mask into its own unique work of art. (IUGTE in collaboration with

Outer Space Carry On Poetic Techniques
The song Outer Space/ Carry On by the Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer should really be
considered two songs totaling 6 minutes and 39 seconds, but they decided to make it just one. The
song appears on their sophomore album released in 2015 Sounds Good Feels Good. The uniqueness of
this track is what drew me to enjoying it so much. While this band has been called anything from rock,
to pop, to punk, I simply enjoy their sound without classifications. The song begins as almost a chant
of oh s from all four band members. A strong guitar sound and a powerful drum beat help emphasize
the start of the song. After the first line of chants, an orchestra joins in to help slightly soften the sound
before the song has truly even begun. Then the chant, guitar, drums and orchestra fade rather abruptly
for the singing to begin. Before any words are said, a simple chiming of xylophone is heard with the
orchestra even further in the distance. The lead singer comes in with a voice like a lullaby, peaceful
yet strong. The tranquility of the first two lines of the song end unexpectedly with the clash of the
lyrics, The rain it came too soon, I will wait for you, along the drums slamming and the electric guitar
shredding with every syllable. From here, the song takes on a more classic rock sound in what is
considered the chorus, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It conveys several messages about everyday life in a way that s simple yet open for interpretation. It
says that even when things get bad, it s never as bad as it seems. The idea of Nothing like the rain
when you re in outer space was appealing to me because it really makes absolutely no sense, which
means each person has to give it meaning. I d like to think it means cherishing things you don t always
have. This song can give so many different meanings to the listener no matter how they interpret it

economic effects as well as cultural effects. Herbert Hoover altered humanity in a positive way
because of economic effect, including, provided others with homes to stay in, loaning money and
attempting to stop the Great Depression. Hoover also affected humanity in a positive way because of
cultural effects such as, providing them with supplies, and saving people with the help of the peace
army from disease and lastly Hoover helped save numerous amounts of people by providing others
with food.
Herbert Hoover affected humanity in a positive way because of economic effects. Herbert Hoover
provided others to get a home to stay in, help others with loaning them with money to pay for various
things, and also attempted to stop the great depression during his presidency. Herbert Hoover played
an important role in helping others. During WWI, Germany declared war on France, and the American
Consul General asked his help in getting stranded tourists home. (The White House). By offering to
help others Herbert Hoover helped save many lives by providing stranded tourists with a home to stay
in during the war. Herbert Hoover offered financial assistance to get these stranded tourists a home.
Many tourists got stranded because of the war and the train got shut down because of this and
therefore many tourists were unable to get home. Interestingly Herbert Hoover helped others by

Rogers Center Case Study
Toronto Blue Jays need to revitalize the old and outdated Rogers Centre to bring a greater positive
atmosphere for new and die hard fans. The current state for the Rogers Centre doesn t have the
baseball atmosphere it once had when it first opened. Fans criticise about the stadium, but have no
objections to the location of the stadium. The Toronto Argonauts also play at the Rogers Centre which
diminishes the Blue Jays exclusivity to the stadium. In order to attract the young demographic and
maintain current fans, the Rogers Centre needs major renovations and to be exclusive to the Toronto

The Pain At The Hospital
The pain in my side was excruciating! I had never felt a pain like this before; it would come and go in
waves like something was squeezing at some unknown organ. This had happened twice before, but the
pain had never been as unbearable as this third time. Because of the severity of this attack, I finally
decided to go see a professional. We first visited a small clinic, but they were not able to assist me
because they did not have any machines needed for deep body scans. The staff suggested that we go to
the emergency room. When we arrived at the hospital, it did not take long before I was admitted and
taken back to a room. Very soon afterward, I met my primary nurse, who was not very compassionate,
and she took some notes of my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

many questions (about things that he did not need to know) about my personal business, he finally
gave up his belief that I was pregnant, and moved on the more likely idea that I had a kidney stone.
The long wait had finally paid off. Soon afterwards, two radiology techs came to my room, and
brought me to have a CT scan done. By this time, I had begun to tremble uncontrollably, and for the
CT scan I had to lay down on a freezing table while the machine passed over me. This did not take
long, and I was soon wheeled back to my room. But before I had been pushed out of the room, one the
techs gave me a blanket to put over the thin sheet I had been using. This was the one act of kindness
that was shown to me during my hospital experience. Hour after painful hour ticked by as we waited
to hear back from the doctor about the test. I could not help but to cry. I was in pain, I was cold, I was
hungry, and it seemed that these people were the exact opposite of urgency. I realized that it was an
emergency room, and the nurses had to also look after other people who were severely injured. But I

The Great Railroad Strike Of 1877
Summary:
Crises, such as the great railroad strike of 1877, Homestead strike of 1892, Pullman strike of 1894,
and the depression of 1893 1894, were results from the rise of industrial capitalism. By 1900, America
produced one third of the world s goods. Due to this, cities became polluted and overcrowded, and
became breeding grounds for diseases like typhoid and cholera. The working situations were not much
better, with unskilled industrial laboring class, child labor, low wages, locked fire doors, and
allowance of toxic fumes in the factories; many people were disgusted by the way America s economy
grew, while its people were left in poor health.
The middle and working classes were looked down upon by the wealthy capitalistic upper class.
Muckrakers shed light on the shady business dealings the capitalistic upper class dealt in, and the
corruption of politics. The society they showed made many Americans felt as though the fundamental
principles and promises were violated. This is how progressivism was formed; a way to fix the broken
society that many Americans now suffered in.
Progressivism arose in various places from 1890 to 1917. It had many different focuses ranging from
social justice emphasis to economic and political emphasis. There were three areas the movement
wanted to reform: efforts to make the government cleaner (less corrupt and more democratic),
attempts to ameliorate the effects of industrialization and efforts to rein in corporate power.

The ways of Gilead were manipulative and controlling; they limited the amount of communication
with both the handmaids and citizens and used Angels, the police force and the eyes who were always

inhuman; as a horrific event occurred after the women celebrate, the joining of marriage for new

Essay on European and Native American Relations
Beginning in the sixteenth century, Europeans made the voyage to a new world in order to achieve
dreams of opportunity and riches. In this other world the Europeans came upon another people, which
naturally led to a cultural exchange between different groups of people. Although we commonly refer
to European and Indian relations as being between just two very different groups of people, it is
important to recognize this is not entirely true. Although the settlers of the new world are singularly
referred to as Europeans, each group of people came from a different nation and with different
motives and expectations of the new world. Similarly, the Indians were neither a united group nor
necessarily friendly with each other. Due to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Verrazano speaks kindly of these courteous and generous groups, he also speaks of encounters
with people he deems full of crudity and vices. He claims that interaction with these groups was
difficult. He describes their attempts to trade with this group; they sent us what they wanted to give on
a rope, continually shouting to us not to approach the land. This description provides us some insight
into the feelings of the Indians towards these new European invaders. Their actions seem to be based
on fear and apprehension towards these unknown men (Voices of Freedom, 9). Much of European
criticism of Native American was based on differences in religion, land use, and gender relations.
Most Europeans reasoned that Indians needed to be converted to the true religion of Christianity (Give
Me Liberty, 11). In fact, Verrazano concluded that the Indians had no religion or laws (Voices of
Freedom, 10). The Europeans did not understand the Indians use of the land and thus justified
overtaking it, reasoning that they did not truly use it. Some Europeans criticized gender relations,
claiming that women lacked freedom due to their work in the fields (Give me Liberty, 12 13). Others,
like Verrazano, criticized the Indians for having absolute freedom in which they did not abide to any
laws due to ignorance (Voices of Freedom, 10). Regardless of

Regulations for the air travel industry are getting even more stringent. The European Union authorities
demand that airlines operate in an open, transparent manner. Any state subsidies to airline companies
are prohibited in order to make working conditions equal to anyone and to boost competition in the
industry. There are also regulations in place for airlines not to exceed certain levels of noise and air
pollution. All of the legislation and regulations make operating in the industry harder. Trade unions are

transactional because under his management people tried to work harder and achieve challenging
goals and felt commitment to what they were doing. FT called O Leary one of the 25 greatest
European business stars ( A head for numbers, a shrewd marketing brain, and a ruthless competitive
streak ).
4. The Competitive Environment
In order to understand the competitive environment, it is useful to carry out the Porter s Five Forces
Analysis:
Barriers to Entry High because as the case suggests only early entrants such as Ryanair can succeed.
There has been much industry shake out and many airlines have gone bust. High entry costs due to the
necessity to buy expensive aircraft and equipment, pay to airports, and advertise massively. In the
market where one competes on cost and not on differentiation, it is hard to attract customers from
incumbent airlines.
Threat of substitutes Medium to high. Although low cost carriers have taken over some share of car
ferries and buses, high speed trains in Europe, especially on short haul routes are posing an
increasingly serious threat. The speeds of the train are ever increasing and new routes are constantly
being added, which compounds the situation.

The Hawksbill Sea Turtle And The Sea Turtles
The Hawksbill Sea Turtle is one of seven species of sea turtles that inhabit the ocean. Their scientific
name is Eretmochelys imbricata and they belong to the cheloniidae family. The hawksbill sea turtles
are named for their hawk like beak. They also have a carapace with an overlapping pattern of scales
that form a jagged edge along the shell. They are found mainly throughout the Atlantic, Indian and
Pacific oceans. According to the national geographic, they tend to avoid deep waters and prefer
coastlines where they can feast on sponges and with sandy beaches close by for nesting. According to
the U.S Fish wildlife service of North Florida, the Hawksbill sea turtle also like to swim around rocky
areas, coral reefs, lagoons, shallow ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only are they poached specifically for their shell, but also for their meat for consumption of
humans but also to be used as shark bait for fisherman. According to the National Wildlife Federation,
many sponges and small animals consumed, are toxic. The hawksbill body fat absorbs the toxins
without making the turtle ill, but their meat is potentially poisonous to humans (National Wildlife
Federation). The IUCN also states that Hawksbill Sea Turtles are also sought out for their hatchling
eggs.
The next cause for decreasing hawksbill population is the loss of habitat. Degradation such as
pollution being introduced to the oceans including untreated sewage, exhaust, trash, chemicals such as
pesticides and fertilizers, industrial and powerplant emissions and oil spills make their way into the
water and the natural environment for this species and all ocean species that break down and destroy
the ecosystem that they use to survive. Habitat destruction is also a factor that is a risk to this species
chance of survival is human filling in wetlands and rivers to build for businesses and residential.
Development for tourism is destructing nesting habitats for this species as well as all sea turtle species.
Entanglement and ingestion of fish line and fishing nets is another cause for fatalities in the Hawksbill
sea turtle species. Water craft strikes also contribute to injuries and fatalities amongst this species.

Sex, Lies, And Conversation Deborah Tannen
In the essay Sex, Lies, and Conversation Deborah Tannen focuses on the differences and lack of
communication between men and women though observations. She came to the conclusion that men
were not lacking in their listening, but they were however listening in a different way than the women
did. On the other hand, men aren t the only people that have terrible communication skills. In many
ways, these differences between the two genders can cause major conflict when not understood by the
opposite side. A few examples of lack of communication may be when women don t decide where
they would like to eat, men who walk away from an argument rather than talking it out, and their
decision making processes. The stereotypical mask that covers the female gender is that when asked
where they would like to eat, they reply with, I don t care, wherever you d like to go. Instead of
bluntly telling their significant other an actual response. The indirect message often can lead to
frustration and/or annoyance for the other person. This response can mean a number of things. For
one, the woman may not want to come off as too picky or even they are giving lean way for what you
might be interested in, too. However, when suggesting where he might want to go, the woman often
says she doesn t want to go there simply because she is shortening the options without bluntly saying
where they want to go. Woman often want the men to think that they care where they would like to go

They are the only government organized organization with the purpose of controlling drug traffic. The
Drug Enforcement Administration seems to be most known for their role in stopping drug
transportation across borders by use of DEA officers, police trained dogs, and other tools. To my

During the late seventies and early 80 s, the Drug Enforcement Administration tightened drug controls
and expanded its programs.
The eighties saw the introduction of new technology into the DEA, such as CAT (real time vehicle

administrator from 1981 to 1985. In 1982, the Drug Enforcement Administration officially joined
forces with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Many drug investigations were successful
during this time period, including one bust resulting in the seizure of over 1600lbs of cocaine.
In 1984 and amendment to the Controlled Substances Act was passed. The amendment provided
additional authority for the denial or revocation of a practitioner controlled substance registration
based on a demonstration that such registration was contrary to the public interest as described by the
Drug Enforcement Administration history on www.dea.gov. In 1986, the DEA began one of its most
successful programs, the Drug Free Workplace program. By 1988, over 2,000 drug tests were
conducted (including 1,600 random tests) as part of the drug free workplace program. During the late
1980s and early 1990 s, Americans became more aware of drug use and trafficking, however abuse of
the drugs increased significantly. President George H.W. Bush focused national efforts on a plan to cut
both the supply and demand of illegal drugs.

Pros And Cons Of Made In America
Made in America
The trend towards outsourcing overseas and the slowly decreasing of American manufacturing has
made it very difficult to find American made goods, but not impossible. There are a few small
businesses that are still dedicated to manufacturing goods in the United States, but in today s society,
they are hard to come by. Buying goods manufacturing in the USA is something that us consumers,
business owners and even the government can do to support these businesses that manufacture their
products in America.
Pros:
1. No Language Barrier: Communication with your suppliers would be much easier if you re

Outsourced jobs are usually done by workers who are overworked, underpaid, sometimes physically
abused or work in dangerous working environments.
3. Environment: By manufacturing goods in the United States, air pollution and environmental
burdens will definitely increase. Much of the production and manufacturing in America is dependent
on energy and relies on many different resources for producing goods. As Americans, we want to live
sustainably and support USA, but by increasing United States manufacturing, we re increasing air
pollution and will continue hurting the environment if we re using American resources and production.
4. Overseas Competition: 98% of clothes bought in the United States are made overseas, with China
being by far the leading country, which leaves only 2% made in America. There is no way that
America could even come close to the amount of goods that China produces. In just one city in China,
they manufacture 1/3 of the world s socks! I don t think it is even feasible to compete with China now,
or ever. What we re good at manufacturing here in the United States is the production of advanced
goods such as winter proof, waterproof, and wind proof clothing. But besides that, I don t think we
will ever be able to compete with China s high rate of production.
Small businesses are responsible for two out of every three new jobs created in the U.S. We need these

Paul s Behavior At School Case Study
Paul s behavior at school comes under reproach when his teachers ostensibly organize an
interrogation. Paul confidently answers his teachers criticisms for his demeanor, disdain for their
efforts, and even how he chooses to adorn his outfit with a red carnation, and is eventually released
despite the loathing of his teachers. He joyfully heads to Carnegie Hall for his shift as an usher. It is
here where Paul escapes the monotony of his life; he finds refuge in his livened senses the sounds of
the symphonies, the lights, the feeling of life. Yet he must return to his strangulated home of Cordelia
Street, a place he naturally detested for its homogeneity, and a place that motivated him to his great
escape. After stealing bank notes and checks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

of a house penetrated by common foods, (smell) colorless mass of every day existence (sight), and of

Belonging In The Outsiders
The theme of belonging is developed in the texts The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, The blindside by John

experiences teach us that when we stop trying to belong, we realize that we have always belonged, we
have always belonged because of the actions we take but once we stop trying to fit in with the world
and stepped off the bubble of belonging we can see that we ve always belonged. In the short story, on

Legalization Of Steroids In Sports
high intensity physical competition would be monstrous for the opposing team, giving the player the
advantage of fear and discretion on the playing field. The use of steroids also increases endurance in
the muscles of those who take them. This may be the single biggest reason that steroids give an unfair
advantage in a competitive setting. Since steroids can increase endurance levels multiple times,
athletes find it easier to run faster and improve their performance in sports, ( Steroids in Sports. ).
Steroids are used to enhance endurance for many reasons. First, increased muscle endurance makes

How Does Berger Use American Apparel Images
In John Berger s Ways of Seeing he offers the idea that to be a woman has been to be born...into the
keeping of men. He illustrates on page 46, that women are born to satisfy men, at least in terms of art
for most European painters. He empathizes this point by pointing at nude portraits and oil paintings. I
decided to analyze my own choice of advertisement to compare his theory in the modern world. I
chose an American Apparel advertisement; the company has a history of invoking reactions from the
public. The advertisement does not require much analysis to cause offense to the general viewer.

Our text explains that Durkheim s sociological model gets to the center of the relationship between an

Egoistic suicide When someone has little or no ties to society, Durkheim calls it, low integration or
low belongingness. These people are typically loners who will not benefit from social authority

Evaluate the four definitions of suicide given in the text.
The act or an instance of taking one s own life voluntarily and intentionally, especially by a person of
years of discretion and sound mind. This first definition given in the text seems to be the most cut and
dry and one that most would identify with except it stating that suicide is typically done by an older
person. While statistically the elderly take their lives more often I feel that the most important part of
this definition is sound mind . Many people who take their own lives are not of sound mind so by this
definition they have not committed suicide?
Self killing deriving from one s inability or refusal to accept the terms of the human condition. This is
a very powerful definition that I feel gives the blame to society when someone commits suicide. If
someone does not have strong social ties then it seems that this definition would not apply to them.
All behavior that seeks and finds the solution to an existential problem by making an attempt on the
life of the subject. This definition not only calls the act of actually ending one s own life as suicide but
an attempt as well. By this definition someone who has an unsuccessful suicide attempt has still
committed suicide. I find it to be too broad of a definition and leaves to much open for

I am not really a big reader, especially if it is books that I have to read, but I have to say I actually like
this book. It was one of the best nonfiction books I have read in a while. From the instant that I first

worldwide. I was completely shocked that I had never heard before of the Lacks family and of what
they were forced to tolerate. The beginning of this book was a wonderful introduction into the reality

Lacks is still a pressing matter. It also showed us that this type of event does not ever stop affecting

look at the world. HeLa cells saved millions of people. Yet, most of them remain unaware at the
source of their redemption. Skloot presents to her readers the real live woman, the children who
survived her, and the interaction of race, poverty, science and one of the most important medical
discoveries ever. The characteristic work skillfully puts a human face on the questions surrounded by
the HeLa cell line. I enjoyed learning about the remarkable influence this woman has made to our
scientific advancement. I am hopeful; hopeful that this book will make an impact on the life on
Henrietta Lack s family and their descendants. Hopeful, that the world will begin to understand that
HeLa is not just a name of a cell but came from a living breathing person called Henrietta Lacks. In

The ABC method means that all the individual activities part of a process can be accurately cost. This
is what Super Bakery needs to set the value of the company based on the activities of individual assets
(management, staff, manufacturing and warehouse). The activity based cost system allows the
company to identify where high (and low) costs are being incurred and the cause. How can a company
survive with a 20% growth rate in twenty year duration? The desire to change was required and ABC
is the best cost system for Super Bakery. The ABC method helps with future product planning and the
cost of all activities associated with a product or service can be accurately determined before it is
launched. This can help with determining pricing, and any associated expenditures of the company.
The objective was to move from the concept of job cost system that the company mimicked. The
notion of job order is a disadvantage to Super Bakery. The order cost of its customers was at a fixed
cost. The problem exist as the orders with high margins subsidized low margins. Profit margins are not
recognized by the cash flow produced by order. A process cost system could be used by the company
but will impose disadvantages. Process costing advantages include the ability for companies to create
a cost for products where it is difficult to track cost flows for each

Essay about European Imperialism
European imperialism during 1450 1750, began as a plan to gain more riches for the European
nations. The Europeans did this for three main reasons, which were for God, Gold, and Glory. The
Europeans domination over Latin America, Africa and Asia were made out to be good for the native
people of these lands. However, the Europeans were not there to help these geographic areas. They
were there to spread their influence and gain riches for themselves and the European nations. The
successes and failures of the Europeans and non Europeans would decide their relationship status for
as long as they could co exist.

European domination in Africa began because the Portuguese wanted to establish a faster route to
India. Yet, when the Portuguese arrived they began to set up a trade of gold, slaves and ivory. The
Europeans pretended to be Christian humanitarians and attempted to convert the Africans to
Christians. They used god to justify their mistreatment of the natives. Many of the natives did convert
to Christianity and accepted the Europeans mistreatments. The Europeans set up port cities on the
African coast in order to help their ships on their journey to India. At the port cities, they could stop,
rest, and replenish their supplies.
The Europeans would attempt to turn the different African tribes against each other and started many
tribal wars throughout Africa. When a tribe was conquered, the remaining members would be
transported back to Europe and the Americas in order to be sold into slavery, and their villages would
be raided for any potential riches the Europeans could sell or use. Creating these tribal wars gave the
Europeans money and also eliminated possible enemies from the land.

Fahrenheit 451 Character Analysis
Fahrenheit 451 People can change a lot across the time of their life, in some instances however, people
can change in just a few weeks. Guy Montag, fictional character in Ray Bradbury s Fahrenheit 451, is
a fireman of a dystopian future where books are illegal and are to be burned, but in this story Guy
Montag is the perfect example of change. Some of the things that influenced Montag and changed
with him throughout the story being; some of the people he met, his emotions for his strange wife
Mildred, and his views on fire and books. Guy Montag didn t seem to know that many people, but the
people he did meet changed him quite a lot. That being, when he met Faber at a park one late
afternoon, Montag had little clue that Faber would soon help him become what his own job had fought
against: a book reader. Faber not only changed Montag by trying to give him a better understanding of
books, but by telling Montag how to be smart about the book situation: Watch it I m with you,

young I felt! But now I want you to feel old I want a little of my cowardice to be distilled in you

that everyone is to caught up on the full wall sized TV s and the jet cars that people would go out with
on weekends and possibly return in a bodybag. Clarisse also showed Montag things you could only

Free Will And Free Choice
Freedom of Will
The alarm clock sounds, you get up and stand before your wardrobe, facing a decision. The white shirt
or the blue, both clean, both equally nice, but it is still an easy decision. The blue. You revel in your
creativity and ready yourself for the day to come. The freedom you have always known permitted the
choice, your free will grants you this privilege. Or does it? Free will is a false concept often confused
with free choice. Free will does not truly exist, the limitations set by nature and the influence of other
people hinder the ability to choose without the impact of past experiences.
As Barbara Smoker, a British Humanist activist and freethought advocate stated, Free choice means
you are not forced by other people or what is outside of you. Free will is the idea that you are not
programmed by past and present circumstances to do what you do now, (1). We as human beings are
naturally reliant on other human beings for our daily dose of interaction. This is where the magic
begins. Everyone has an opinion, everyone has criticism, and everyone has different likes and dislikes,
however they are not our own. Most of our childhood experiences shape the people we become. For
example, if you had a dog instead of a cat, and that dog was fairly well behaved, you are likely to
prefer dogs to cats when you grow older. Or, if you had a dog and it was not well behaved, it is likely
you will grow to dislike either the breed or dogs in general. Our opinions and our

capital structure. Franco Modigliani and Merton Miller (MM) have developed a theory that helps us to
understand how taxes and financial distress affect a company s capital structure decision. There were
different unclear issues that M M theorem used their basis in building their assumption. For instance,

Modigliani and Miller start by assuming that the firm has a particular set of expected cash flows. Once
the company decides to finance its assets, by selecting a certain proportion of debt and equity, all it
does is to split the cash flows between investors. Based on the assumption taken into consideration by
Modigliani and Miller that the investors and firm have equal access to financial markets, which allows
them for homemade leverage. The authors also pointed out that the investor can create any leverage
they wanted but not offered or the investor can get rid of any leverage that the firm took on but was
not wanted. This theory was proposed under perfect capital market conditions (without taxes,
transaction costs and information asymmetry) value of any firm is independent of its financing

Black Death Theory
The Black Death, which swept the continent of Europe in the mid 1300 s, was an extreme epidemic
which was an eye opener for extreme illnesses and plagues. The plague had a lot of harmful effects on
the people and continent of Europe. The Black Death was a powerful, murderous, and rampant
disease.
The epidemic, commonly known today as the Black Death , began in the mid fourteenth century.
There are many theories with evidence as to how the illness spread to different areas in different ways.
One of these theories was that in 1347, the first confirmation of the plague occurred on the island of
Sicily off the Italian coast. Another theory of the plague s begin and origin is that in 1346 in the
European, Black Sea coastal city of Caffa, crew members from a recently docked ship were all ill
from the plague. There is even another theory that the plague started affecting the southern region of
Europe in 1348 due to trade routes from the middle east to Europe. At the start of the disease outbreak,
the origins and spread of the disease were unknown. It was later discovered that fleas and rats were the
main carriers of Pasteurella pestis. ( Bubonic Plague World of Biology) Pasteurella pestis is the

swollen lymph nodes would then turn into gory, black patches. These patches were filled with blood
and would exude pus. Typically, death followed these symptoms shortly after their first appearance.

Dapsone And T-Cell Response Lab Report
Dapsone and T cell Response
Like most sulphonamides, dapsone can lead to a hypersensitivity reaction that is likely cell mediated
(type IV hypersensitivity reaction). T cells are indicated because of the time delay from beginning
therapy to the time of disease, approximately 4 weeks. The mechanism of T cell response to dapsone
is unknown and three mechanisms are postulated. According to the hapten model, a small inert
molecule could illicit an immune response by first covalently binding directly to an intra or extra
cellular protein. Where the native protein would likely be recognized as self and be ignored by the
immune system the protein adduct could stimulate a T cell response. This is the mechanism of the
delayed hypersensitivity reactions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Alternatively, the pro hapten model asserts that nonreactive molecules can be metabolized
intracellularly and the metabolites then bind to host proteins, modifying them. Again, when presented
to the T cell receptor they are recognized as abnormal and the T cell becomes activated to illicit an
immune response. This response is seen in reactions with sulfamethoxazole and other drugs (Adam et
al, 2011). Finally, in the pharmacological interactions of drugs with immune receptors concept, or p I
model, an inert molecule interacts directly with the antigen presenting cell at the major
histocompatibility complex. These alterations are sufficient to interact with the T cell Receptor and
induce a response. The p i model is the most likely candidate for dapsone as there is a 21 fold

Carrico is the full time staff advisor to UPB and also a student center employee. He accepted the role
of being UPB s advisor in January 2013. Carrico did his undergraduate work at Indiana University
Bloomington. There he was involved in orientation and their program board which inspired him to
pursue a degree in Student Affairs at the University of South Carolina. Afterwards, he accepted a job
at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign in program funding and finance. Though Carrico s true
passion was actually programming and working with students so he accepted his position at Ball State.
In his role, he provides UPB assistance with contracts, negotiating vendors, providing guidance to the
board members together and individually, reserving venues, and meeting with university leadership
regarding funding. Carrico is a laissez faire leader who believes in the empowerment of his student
leaders and members. From our observations at meetings, we saw that he does a lot of the behind the
scene work and goes with the flow and will occasionally provide his input. We were quite puzzled
with his participation in the first meeting, but slowly understood how his style gets the job done
throughout the weeks. Carrico believes intrinsic

The Is The Rationalization Of The Store Of Department...
Mcdonaldization, according to George Ritzer, is the rationalization taken to its extreme. I have the
luxury of being employed by Sears, company which is a chain of department stores across the country.
At Sears, I am an appliances sales consultant. A normal day in this position consist of arriving on time
to get my reports for the day. These reports are different customer information, complains, and request
that have to be dealt with by either me, or I have to find the appropriate person to be able to help.
Once that is taken care of, it is my job to catch up on the appliances the Sears sells and formulation a
sales pitch that will successfully persuade the customer to buy their appliances during their visit. This
consist of finding out the known problems, known questions, and solutions that have worked for other
people. After this is done, it is time to engage the customer. Sears has what they call know your expert
, in which a customer now has the ability to shop online in a more efficient manner. Appliances, unlike
other products, is harder to shop online for because the customer wants to see and touch the product.
Know your expert allows the customer to go online, find products they are interested in, fill out
specific features they would like, and then go into to the store and have an expert explain the product
that is comparable to their selection. Of course, my job is to do what is right for the company first, and
if I can help the customer while doing that,

The Pros And Cons Of The Fourteenth Amendment
The Fourteenth Amendment has, overall, been a great incorporation into the Constitution through its
equal protection clause, due process clause, and other specific feature such as the ability to be show
the presence of the separate but equal mindset invested amongst individuals in the Court case of
Plessy v. Ferguson, the implementation of said mindset in the decision of the Brown v. The Board of
Education Supreme Court case, the usage of the due process clause in the 2000 presidential election
between Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Al Gore, and both equal protection clause and de
process clause in the more recent case of obergefell v. hodges. First off, Plessy v Ferguson is a prime
example for the use of the fourteenth amendment s equal protection clause protecting Homer Plessy,
enforcing a separate but equal mindset among the people touched by this court case, and demonstrated
the strength of the equal protection clause. Homer Plessy In the 1892 incident, Plessy refused to sit in
Jim Crow car (expression meaning Negro, racial segregation directed toward African Americans),
breaking Louisiana law. At first the Supreme Court didn t believe his constitutional rights were
violated. Their reason behind this is that it was a state law that implies merely a legal distinction
between whites and people of color. To them, it did not violate the 13th or 14th amendment. This state
law was Louisiana s, the law was about providing separate but equal accommodations for the

I Am Applying to the Master s in Computer Science Program
Aiming to carve a niche for myself in this broad area of Computer Science I apply to the Masters in
Computer Science Program in Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California, San
Diego. This is the Program and the University for me which matches in all aspects of what I seek. The
buzz about the enabling environment within the Computer Science and Engineering Department,
which requires students to push their limits and helps them do so through providing avant garde
course selection and cutting edge infrastructure is a main attraction. The work of Dr. Pavel Pevzner
and Prof Henrick Jensen on Fragment Assembly in DNA sequencing and Global illumination using
photon mapping is exactly what I would want to be part of. I understand that admission is difficult and
then performing once admitted in a group of students that are competitive and brilliant will be even
tougher, I apply because I know that I will be able to perform.
Having lost my parents by the tender age of 12, I understood the true importance of focus,
determination and effort from a very early stage in my life. Life has been what it has and I knew I had
to build my own life. There was no ready platform and thus I did just that. Eligibility for Computer
Engineering in the best engineering college in the state Nirma Institute of Technology came backed by
effort and determination to make it. Focus that I must find my place within Computers was something
that I was aware of from day one. Nevertheless

The Lifestyle Of Romanian Gypsies As An Indigenous Group
Introduction
In order to understand the lifestyle of Romanian Gypsies as an indigenous group, this paper will
provide insight toward their distinctive subculture, survival means, ability to withstand racial
discrimination and unethical living conditions. Historically, Gypsies have been mistreated and isolated
within various cultural settings. Their societies have a terrible reputation for theft, begging and lack of
schooling, causing a divide amongst the population. Remaining far below the poverty line, these
individuals do whatever it takes to survive.
Originating in Northern India, the Romanian, or Roma Gypsies, developed a darker complexion than
the average European. Unique cultural values and beliefs, such as forms of literature and ... Show

Mountains of garbage consume their villages and rats run ramped throughout the community. There is
often no running water, sanitation or electricity in these settlements. The poor living conditions
contribute to the negative persona associated with the Roma ethnic group.
Gypsy women resort to prostitution to make a living, children are sent out to pickpocket, beg and
harass European citizens for money, and gypsy men overlook the work of their children (Appendix C).
The gypsy children are smart, but without an education face a reality of poverty and adversity in
Europe. Many as a result resort to a life of crime of their only means of supporting themselves and
their families. Police are unable to arrest children under 14 years of age, working to the advantage of
Gypsy child thieves. The Romanian Gypsy kids wander the streets searching for money and clothing
to steal. For such young individuals, they are ruthless and lack a child like innocence.
The European community does not tolerate such vile behaviour, resulting in unnecessary violence.
Numerous Gypsy villages have been burned down and destroyed by angry legal residence. Police
brutality is become prominent in communities surrounded by Gypsies. They will confiscate money,
food and material possessions without question and beat Roma Gypsies for unethical reasons. When
the Gypsy communities were being burned and destroyed by European citizens, police stood as

Domestic Surveillance And Coalition With The Nsa
Domestic Surveillance in Coalition with the NSA Rand Paul, of the Wall Street Journal states, How
many records did the NSA seize from Verizon (Paul)? Verizon is an enormous phone company that
covers more than 308 million people. All of the phone information secured in the Verizon Company, is
now being monitored and viewed by the US Government, which was initially kept secret from the
people, under code name PRISM (Greenwald). The information under this code name was then leaked
by a former NSA worker. Unfortunately, just like the book Big Brother s Watching, it is the U.S
Government that is conducting domestic surveillance on Verizon. Companies like Verizon, can t
simply shut off the eyes the government and they also cannot protect their users, now violated, Fourth
Amendment rights. The use of domestic surveillance by the American government must not be
implemented, in order to prevent the violation of American s Fourth Amendment right, to ensure
privacy for the American people, and due to American s distrustful views toward domestic
surveillance and the NSA. The U.S government should not monitor its people, and should not violate
their rights to privacy. The National Security Association (NSA) monitors the communications
without warrant or viable cause, except for the threat of terrorist attacks. Allowing the U.S.
Government to monitor its people violates their Fourth Amendment right to privacy. Not only is
monitoring a violation of right, but the NSA is also keeping

Company s Internal And External Analysis
Consulting Letter
Dear Mr. Jefferies, After considering the company s internal and external analysis, it is clear that
Abercrombie and Fitch need to implement a new strategy for future success. Considering consumer
trends, and the company s current outlook, changes need to be made. The strategies I recommend are
to market the company as a more receptive brand in the United States as well as looking to penetrate
international markets while closing down underperforming US stores. With consumer trends of online
shopping being on the rise, Abercrombie and Fitch can look to close down those stores who are not
meeting sales quotas. Your firm is already considered one of the first movers in the online sphere, but
now is the time to fully take ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Considering that international expansion incurs lots of capital costs, it is a strategy that you should
slowly implement and keep taking note on the returns of investment. The benefits the company will
receive include sustainable profit growth, increase market penetration and improvement of your brand
s reputation.
Key Issues Abercrombie and Fitch Co. is a men and women s clothing company which is built on the
philosophy of not trying to be all things of all people, meaning, not everyone is able to identify
themselves and relate to the brand. Their current CEO, Mike Jefferies, is faced with the issue to decide
whether the firm should expand its direct to consumer and international sales. By doing so, he would
be looking to close down domestic stores in the United States. This issue have appeared due to the
company missing Wall Street s estimates in 2011, thus experiencing a drop in shares. Although sales
have increased domestically, the company had to use price discounts in order to drive those sales, thus
lower gross profit, and creating an unsustainable strategy for the future. As a result, he ponders
whether to close down the lower yielding domestic stores and concentrating on online and
international expansion.
Internal Assessment
Abercrombie and Fitch is a casual luxury clothing band based in the United States. They have 3
distinct brands (Gilly Hicks, Hollister, abercrombie kids) that

PEST ANALYSIS ON TARGET CANADA
BY
GRACE NWACHUKWU.
October, 2014
Business News Daily, 2013 explained PEST Analysis (Political, Economic, Social and Technological
Analysis) as how those external factors can affect a business s activities and performance...
The article further explained that aside the fact that some organizations already have factors affecting
their performance, there are some factors outside the organization that can determine the positive
result of business. For those organizations to determine how those factors outside the organization can
be of positive impact, they decide to conduct a PEST Analysis. In this research, I would be using
TARGET CANADA as a case study on PEST Analysis.
ABOUT TARGET CANADA.
Target Canada. Co is the Canadian subsidiary of United States based discount department store chain
Target Corporation which was formed in 2011 to oversee the company s Canadian operations. Target
Canada s main rival in the Discount store is Walmart, while there is also competition with supermarket
chains such as Loblaws, Metro and Sobeys (despite having agreement with Sobeys) and other retailers
such as Sears Canada, Canadian Tire, Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall. ... Show more content on

The Nature And Existence Of God
The existence of suffering in the world provides a case against the existence of God as the problem of
evil. It seems that the God of classical theism is incompatible with the reality of the world around us;
could such an all loving, all powerful and all knowing God exists in conjunction with instances of
immense and seemingly pointless suffering? It does seem unlikely that such a God exists alongside
evil. However, it is questionable whether this is a proof that God does not exist.
The problem of evil which forms as; is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not
omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then
whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God? (Lactanitus). Epicurus
here challenges the properties we associate with God, suggesting that those properties do not add up to
reality and be consistent with perceived belief about the nature and existence of God. We can form the
problem into an inconsistent triad (J.L Mackie, 212) which runs that God is omnipotent,
omnibenevolent and evil exists. He postulates that no valid solution of the problem which does not
modify at least one of the constituent propositions , positing that is would be impossible to remove
one of the characteristics of God without moving the image of God so far away from our traditional
understanding that it becomes unrecognisable and the problem still remains.
Evil in the world manifests itself in

Models Of Emotional Intelligence
1.5 EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
The term Emotional Intelligence was coined and defined by Salovey and Mayer (1990). Emotional
intelligence can be defined as the ability to monitor one s own and other people s emotions, to
discriminate between different emotions and label them appropriately and to use emotional
information to guide thinking and behaviour. Emotional intelligence also reflects abilities to join
intelligence, empathy and emotions to enhance thought and understanding of interpersonal dynamics.
Despite its recent debut, there are already a number of definitions of EI. These conceptualizations can
be divided into two streams: ability models in which EI is defined as a set of cognitive abilities in
emotional versus mixed trait models that incorporate a wide range of personality characteristics and
other.
1.5.1EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE MODELS
Spielberger (2004) states there are currently three major conceptual models of emotional intelligence:
(1) The Salovey Mayer model
(2) The Goleman model
(3) The Trait model

The Salovey Mayer model which defines this construct as the ability to perceive, understand, manage,
and use emotions to facilitate thinking, measured by an ability based measure; They propose that
individuals differ in their ability to process information of an emotional nature and in their ability to
relate emotional processing to a wider cognition. They then posit that this ability is seen to manifest
itself in certain adaptive behaviours. Mayer and Salovey s conception of emotional intelligence is
based within a model of intelligence, that is, it strives to define emotional intelligence within the
confines of the standard criteria for a new intelligence. The model claims that EI includes four types of

Lost Cultural Identity In An Unknown Girl By Moniza Alvi
An Unknown Girl was written by Moniza Alvi after her hand was painted with a peacock picture by
an unknown girl in a local market in India. She is stuck between two cultures and trying to express her
quest for her lost cultural identity. Moniza Alvi moved to England to seek for a better life with her
parents after living in Pakistan for a few months after she was born. Latterly, her relationship with
India became stronger than ever after returning to discover Indian culture as a part of her identity that
seems to have been forgotten for long.
This poem is written in free verse and the rhythm is fluid, natural like as speech with some rare
rhymes which allows her to flow her thoughts freely. She also uses a variety of techniques to further
emphasize the idea of culture and identity in different ways. Moniza Alvi often uses enjambments but
she does not use punctuation a lot and also does not follow any rules so it makes her poem seems
much livelier. Thus, it creates a sense of nostalgia and makes the tone softer and smoother. ... Show

Is there truly any justice in the novel The Stranger,...
Is there truly any justice in the novel The Stranger, written by Albert
Camus?
Is there truly any justice in the novel The Stranger, written by
Albert Camus? This is a question that naturally protrudes throughout the novel, as it is not abundantly
clear what Meursault, the protagonist, was, in fact, put on trial for. At the beginning of the second part
of the narrative, it is understood that he is put on trial for the murder of an Arab; however, it later
comes to our attention that the murder was not the primary reason of his trial, and perhaps not even an
essential one for that matter. The fact remains that
Meursault was undoubtedly put on trial, not for the murder committed, but for being the way he was:
unemotional through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The answer is simple: it does not relate to the murder of the
Arab. Being the representative of society, the jury opposes Meursault and accuses him of not
conforming to society s natural ways, and being what we nowadays refer to as the odd one out . They
exclude him from society for his odd clear cut and sincere demeanor, and for his manifestation of an
inexpressive character.
Another example is the moment in which the magistrate, a local member of the judiciary having
limited jurisdiction, especially in criminal cases, questioned Meursault. In this particular scene, the
magistrate changes the topic rather abruptly from his love for Maman, to which he responded he loved
the same as anyone (p. 67), to the murder scene.
What followed was a vast discussion on Meursault s belief in God, which he felt rather apathetic
about; however, the magistrate, waving a crucifix to his face refers to him as the antichrist (p. 71). And
later, during the trial, the judge and the prosecuting attorney seem more intrigued by the fact that
Meursault did not grieve at his mother s funeral and got involved with Marie the day after it, than the
actual act that had been committed: the assassination of a man.
The majority of the witnesses that had been called only supported the argument of his callous nature,
as they very well knew that Meursault was frighteningly candid, and could not, or would not, create a

  • 2. Osteoarthritis Site Analysis Analysis of osteoarthritis for each site was conducted in order to determine whether any of the joint changes in the skeletal remains might indicate changes in physical activity levels before and after colonization. To better ascertain the differences in the colonial eras, the prehistoric burials from Corinth and Apollonia were separated from the colonial periods. Even though every site has individuals of indeterminate sex only a comparison between those individuals for whom sex could be reasonably estimated was done. It is instructive to examine the occurrence of osteoarthritis on both the right and left sides of the body. My initial assessment showed that there are no appreciable differences by side of any given joint; therefore, only the left side is used for analysis (Table 4). Osteoarthritis of the vertebrae obviously does not have a side, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthritis is simply counted as a single joint. Examination of Table 4 indicates that there is a relatively high prevalence of osteoarthritis in three particular joints; the hip, thoracic vertebrae, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As mentioned previously age was divided into three broad categories; Young (18 34), Middle age (35 49), and Older (50+) adults at each site (Figure 9). From an examination of Figure 9 we see that those individuals with the higher prevalence of osteoarthritis occur in the Middle age category at Apollonia, Epidamnus, Corinth, and Lofkënd. Individuals in the Older adult category were impacted more by osteoarthritis in prehistoric Apollonia. Unexpectedly, prehistoric Corinth remains show an equal frequency of osteoarthritis occurring in the Young and Middle age adult groups (Figure 9). Unfortunately, prehistoric Corinth had a very small sample size and this sample may not accurately represent the Corinthian pre colonial population. • 3. Essay on The Story of Doctor Faustus The Story of Doctor Faustus The story of Doctor Faustus is a familiar myth, in which the main character sells his soul , makes a deal with the devil, for something he speciously holds more valuable. There are many versions of this story in our culture, and it would take quite a time to make note of them all. Most people will have seen or heard one of the various stories in the for of a book, play, movie, or television show. The original story of Doctor Faustus, as created by Christopher Marlow, was prevalent to society at the time because it spoke to people s growing dizzy awareness of their possibilities and capabilities at this time. By that explanation it seems that the classic Marlow play, Doctor Faustus, would also be a hit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to complete the adaptation of the play to today s standards, keeping in mind the main character is a female, and in an attempt to involve the audience in what is going on both metatheatrically and thematically in the play, there a few scenes in particular which I would highlight to get some newly made effects and concepts of the story across more effectively. One scene I would highlight is act 1, scene 3. This is the scene where Faustesse sets out the terms of her pact with the devil. I would highlight this part for a number of reasons. First off, Faustesse jumps when she first sees Mephostophilis. I feel this is a very important aspect of the play because in one moment it shows a theme which is as prevalent at the end of the play as much as it is at the beginning. When Faustesse jumps at the sight of the Devil and orders him back in a different shape it shows that maybe she is not necessarily ready to take on the Devil to get what she wants, and that Hell and other such things in the same league are not really what Faustesse is looking for to solve her problems, and that such experiences are not really suited to her, and ... In my opinion the conflicting areas are as follows lack of communication, leadership skills, management skills, and the lack of productive workers. As a results of these conflicting areas many of the employees within my organization are experiencing a lot of stress and are at risk of burning out. In order to reduce the level of stress within the workplace many of the productive workers have determined that it is more appropriate to do the bare minimum and are becoming less productive. Those who have burned out no longer have strong work ethic, instead their professional work ethic has become weak and pretty miniscule. How I work through these conflicts are pretty simple I take ... • 5. A Literary Analysis Of Alice Walker sThe Color Purple ) Pretty Colors (A Literary Analysis on Alice Walker s, The Color Purple) Alice Walker was a writer who influenced many people in her time, and continues to influence a copious amount of people still today considering she is still living! Her writing explores multidimensional kinships among women and embraces the redemptive power of social and political revolution. (Whitted) Her works range from short poems to long novels that have been read by thousands. In each, she presents several messages. In the novel, The Color Purple, Walker is able to portray three main messages. The first message in Purple talks about the importance of family. As an adult, Celie s family was separated from her, and she was the receiver of the aggressive touch of a man throughout her entire married life. Celie didn t have a family for quite some time in the literal sense, however she found family with those around her. Those that she became friends with were the ones that became her home. They took care of her and made sure that she wouldn t make decisions that she would regret for the rest of her life. When Celie was in a bad situation, Shug was able to get her out of it, and lead Celie to a place where she could be happy. In the end, Celie s family is all reunited with her and everything turns out for the best! Believe in good things to come. (Holland) The main message, however, is that family may not be the people that are related to you through blood or marriage, but family just might be in the people that take care of you no matter what. The second message in Walker s story is about courage. While living in an abusive relationship, Celie depended on her courage to carry her through the trial that was living with her husband. Nothing the Celie did was ever enough for her husband, and he let her know that by hurting her in many different ways. While many did not perceive Celie as being courageous, others around her found her courage as inspiring. People sought to become like her. Celie is given the chance to truly show her courage, though, when her friend Shug gives her a way out, taking her to a new state. She is able to leave her abusive husband behind, and start a new life. She becomes successful and shows those around her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Palestino Masks Research Paper Venetian Masks Many centuries ago the people of Venice, Italy began wearing Venetian masks to certain gatherings or even sometimes to conceal their identity while committing crimes. Venetian masks have become a tradition over the many centuries but remain very beautiful and extremely intricate. There are many different types of masks, each with their own design, use, history and significance. (The Mascherade) There is little known about why people started wearing Venetian masks in the first place, but the first documentation was in the 13th century a document banning men in masks to throw eggshells full of rose water to women on the street, the same document also bans gambling and vulgar masks. An arlecchino mask is worn to an april fools party, halloween, or just for fun. Lastly the bauta is a full face mask with a square jaw and no mouth., and the bauta was historically used for political reasons but is now worn to make an impression at parties. There are a lot of materials involved in making a Venetian mask, the base of the mask is made of materials such as leather, porcelain, paper mache or traditionally glass. • 7. Outer Space Carry On Poetic Techniques The song Outer Space/ Carry On by the Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer should really be considered two songs totaling 6 minutes and 39 seconds, but they decided to make it just one. The song appears on their sophomore album released in 2015 Sounds Good Feels Good. The uniqueness of this track is what drew me to enjoying it so much. While this band has been called anything from rock, to pop, to punk, I simply enjoy their sound without classifications. The song begins as almost a chant of oh s from all four band members. A strong guitar sound and a powerful drum beat help emphasize the start of the song. After the first line of chants, an orchestra joins in to help slightly soften the sound before the song has truly even begun. Then the chant, guitar, drums and orchestra fade rather abruptly for the singing to begin. Before any words are said, a simple chiming of xylophone is heard with the orchestra even further in the distance. The lead singer comes in with a voice like a lullaby, peaceful yet strong. The tranquility of the first two lines of the song end unexpectedly with the clash of the lyrics, The rain it came too soon, I will wait for you, along the drums slamming and the electric guitar shredding with every syllable. From here, the song takes on a more classic rock sound in what is considered the chorus, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This had happened twice before, but the pain had never been as unbearable as this third time. Because of the severity of this attack, I finally decided to go see a professional. We first visited a small clinic, but they were not able to assist me because they did not have any machines needed for deep body scans. The staff suggested that we go to the emergency room. The long wait had finally paid off. Soon afterwards, two radiology techs came to my room, and brought me to have a CT scan done. By this time, I had begun to tremble uncontrollably, and for the CT scan I had to lay down on a freezing table while the machine passed over me. This did not take long, and I was soon wheeled back to my room. But before I had been pushed out of the room, one the techs gave me a blanket to put over the thin sheet I had been using. This was the one act of kindness that was shown to me during my hospital experience. Hour after painful hour ticked by as we waited to hear back from the doctor about the test. I could not help but to cry. I was in pain, I was cold, I was hungry, and it seemed that these people were the exact opposite of urgency. • 12. The Great Railroad Strike Of 1877 Summary: Crises, such as the great railroad strike of 1877, Homestead strike of 1892, Pullman strike of 1894, and the depression of 1893 1894, were results from the rise of industrial capitalism. By 1900, America produced one third of the world s goods. Due to this, cities became polluted and overcrowded, and became breeding grounds for diseases like typhoid and cholera. The working situations were not much better, with unskilled industrial laboring class, child labor, low wages, locked fire doors, and allowance of toxic fumes in the factories; many people were disgusted by the way America s economy grew, while its people were left in poor health. The middle and working classes were looked down upon by the wealthy capitalistic upper class. Muckrakers shed light on the shady business dealings the capitalistic upper class dealt in, and the corruption of politics. The society they showed made many Americans felt as though the fundamental principles and promises were violated. This is how progressivism was formed; a way to fix the broken society that many Americans now suffered in. Progressivism arose in various places from 1890 to 1917. It had many different focuses ranging from social justice emphasis to economic and political emphasis. There were three areas the movement wanted to reform: efforts to make the government cleaner (less corrupt and more democratic), attempts to ameliorate the effects of industrialization and efforts to rein in corporate power. We see in the acts of punishment, as they hang men and women for their crimes encouraging others to watch and display the dead bodies on the way that stands tall in the city. Their ways were also barbaric and inhuman; as a horrific event occurred after the women celebrate, the joining of marriage for new wives Aunt Lydia takes this opportunity to execute two handmaids and a wife. • 14. Essay on European and Native American Relations Beginning in the sixteenth century, Europeans made the voyage to a new world in order to achieve dreams of opportunity and riches. In this other world the Europeans came upon another people, which naturally led to a cultural exchange between different groups of people. Although we commonly refer to European and Indian relations as being between just two very different groups of people, it is important to recognize this is not entirely true. Although the settlers of the new world are singularly referred to as Europeans, each group of people came from a different nation and with different motives and expectations of the new world. While Verrazano speaks kindly of these courteous and generous groups, he also speaks of encounters with people he deems full of crudity and vices. He claims that interaction with these groups was difficult. He describes their attempts to trade with this group; they sent us what they wanted to give on a rope, continually shouting to us not to approach the land. This description provides us some insight into the feelings of the Indians towards these new European invaders. Their actions seem to be based on fear and apprehension towards these unknown men (Voices of Freedom, 9). Much of European criticism of Native American was based on differences in religion, land use, and gender relations. Most Europeans reasoned that Indians needed to be converted to the true religion of Christianity (Give Me Liberty, 11). In fact, Verrazano concluded that the Indians had no religion or laws (Voices of Freedom, 10). The Europeans did not understand the Indians use of the land and thus justified overtaking it, reasoning that they did not truly use it. Some Europeans criticized gender relations, claiming that women lacked freedom due to their work in the fields (Give me Liberty, 12 13). Others, like Verrazano, criticized the Indians for having absolute freedom in which they did not abide to any laws due to ignorance (Voices of Freedom, 10). Regardless of ... She came to the conclusion that men were not lacking in their listening, but they were however listening in a different way than the women did. On the other hand, men aren t the only people that have terrible communication skills. In many ways, these differences between the two genders can cause major conflict when not understood by the opposite side. A few examples of lack of communication may be when women don t decide where they would like to eat, men who walk away from an argument rather than talking it out, and their decision making processes. The stereotypical mask that covers the female gender is that when asked where they would like to eat, they reply with, I don t care, wherever you d like to go. Instead of bluntly telling their significant other an actual response. The indirect message often can lead to frustration and/or annoyance for the other person. This response can mean a number of things. For one, the woman may not want to come off as too picky or even they are giving lean way for what you might be interested in, too. Based on the assumption taken into consideration by Modigliani and Miller that the investors and firm have equal access to financial markets, which allows them for homemade leverage. The authors also pointed out that the investor can create any leverage they wanted but not offered or the investor can get rid of any leverage that the firm took on but was not wanted. The plague had a lot of harmful effects on the people and continent of Europe. The Black Death was a powerful, murderous, and rampant disease. The epidemic, commonly known today as the Black Death , began in the mid fourteenth century. There are many theories with evidence as to how the illness spread to different areas in different ways. One of these theories was that in 1347, the first confirmation of the plague occurred on the island of Sicily off the Italian coast. Another theory of the plague s begin and origin is that in 1346 in the European, Black Sea coastal city of Caffa, crew members from a recently docked ship were all ill from the plague. There is even another theory that the plague started affecting the southern region of Europe in 1348 due to trade routes from the middle east to Europe. At the start of the disease outbreak, the origins and spread of the disease were unknown. It was later discovered that fleas and rats were the main carriers of Pasteurella pestis. • 35. Dapsone And T-Cell Response Lab Report Dapsone and T cell Response Like most sulphonamides, dapsone can lead to a hypersensitivity reaction that is likely cell mediated (type IV hypersensitivity reaction). T cells are indicated because of the time delay from beginning therapy to the time of disease, approximately 4 weeks. The mechanism of T cell response to dapsone is unknown and three mechanisms are postulated. According to the hapten model, a small inert molecule could illicit an immune response by first covalently binding directly to an intra or extra cellular protein. Where the native protein would likely be recognized as self and be ignored by the immune system the protein adduct could stimulate a T cell response. Finally, in the pharmacological interactions of drugs with immune receptors concept, or p I model, an inert molecule interacts directly with the antigen presenting cell at the major histocompatibility complex. • 47. The Nature And Existence Of God The existence of suffering in the world provides a case against the existence of God as the problem of evil. It seems that the God of classical theism is incompatible with the reality of the world around us; could such an all loving, all powerful and all knowing God exists in conjunction with instances of immense and seemingly pointless suffering? It does seem unlikely that such a God exists alongside evil. However, it is questionable whether this is a proof that God does not exist. The problem of evil which forms as; is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God? (Lactanitus). Epicurus here challenges the properties we associate with God, suggesting that those properties do not add up to reality and be consistent with perceived belief about the nature and existence of God. We can form the problem into an inconsistent triad (J.L Mackie, 212) which runs that God is omnipotent, omnibenevolent and evil exists. He postulates that no valid solution of the problem which does not modify at least one of the constituent propositions , positing that is would be impossible to remove one of the characteristics of God without moving the image of God so far away from our traditional understanding that it becomes unrecognisable and the problem still remains. Emotional intelligence can be defined as the ability to monitor one s own and other people s emotions, to discriminate between different emotions and label them appropriately and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behaviour. Emotional intelligence also reflects abilities to join intelligence, empathy and emotions to enhance thought and understanding of interpersonal dynamics. Is there truly any justice in the novel The Stranger, written by Albert Camus? This is a question that naturally protrudes throughout the novel, as it is not abundantly clear what Meursault, the protagonist, was, in fact, put on trial for. At the beginning of the second part of the narrative, it is understood that he is put on trial for the murder of an Arab; however, it later comes to our attention that the murder was not the primary reason of his trial, and perhaps not even an essential one for that matter. The answer is simple: it does not relate to the murder of the Arab. Being the representative of society, the jury opposes Meursault and accuses him of not conforming to society s natural ways, and being what we nowadays refer to as the odd one out . They exclude him from society for his odd clear cut and sincere demeanor, and for his manifestation of an inexpressive character. Another example is the moment in which the magistrate, a local member of the judiciary having limited jurisdiction, especially in criminal cases, questioned Meursault. In this particular scene, the magistrate changes the topic rather abruptly from his love for Maman, to which he responded he loved the same as anyone (p. 67), to the murder scene. What followed was a vast discussion on Meursault s belief in God, which he felt rather apathetic about; however, the magistrate, waving a crucifix to his face refers to him as the antichrist (p. 71). And later, during the trial, the judge and the prosecuting attorney seem more intrigued by the fact that Meursault did not grieve at his mother s funeral and got involved with Marie the day after it, than the actual act that had been committed: the assassination of a man.
