The Battle That Stopped Rome Summary
In his book The Battle That Stopped Rome, the writer Peter S. Wells talks about how the battle
in Teutoburg Forest has changed the history of Rome and the European nations a whole. In the
first part of his book, the author speaks about how the written papers like manuscripts or copies
of scripts help the scholar in the Middle ages understand what really happens in the period of that
battle. And he also talks about other archeological evidence help scholars to understand what
really take place in the battle in the second part of his book. Finally, in the last part of his book,
Peter S. Wells tells the reader about the meaning of the Teutourg Forest and the reason why Rome
lost its battle to the nomadic tribe. And he talks about how the battle influenced the Rome empire
and the Europe in social lives as well in the conclusion part of his book. Between the first part and
last part... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And the writer also states that the sentiment made by Poggio Bacciolini shows probably he has
an original copy of the script because Poggio does not want to show it to others. Then from the
page 38 and 39, we could know that in Paris, experts discovered a military history book about the
battle, and it was written by Lucius Annaeus. Lucius gives many details of the battle in his book.
And in page 38, the write mentions that Velleius Paterculus in A.D.30 wrote a book about the
history of Teutoburg Forest battle. Besides, a historian called Cassius Dio also wrote about the
history of that war. Another writer mentioned by Peter S. Wells is Lucius Annaeus Florus, who
seemed to give more real details of how the war happened and how the soldiers from Rome fought
against soldiers from German. Tacitus is the last author mentioned by Peter who gives information
and ideas of the results of that

Habits Of Highly Effective Teens By Sean Covey
High School is a huge milestone for everyone, and for many, it can be a lot to take in all at once.
In the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Author Sean Covey goes over 7 habits, that if applied
to everyone s lives, (Including Adults) can bring them more success and become highly effective.
The habits discuss useful tips and tricks to accomplish your goals and make a difference, to fulfill
your greatest aspirations and start preparing as a young adult ready to work up to success.
Habit 1 discusses being proactive instead of reactive, and taking control of your own decisions and
how that can benefit you. The author uses multiple examples on how to deal with certain situations
and encourages/recommends self courageous thoughts. An example of the author doing this was, if
you believe you are smart, that belief will cast a rosy hue on everything you do (Covey 13). This
statement alone can inspire many freshman and influence them to take more risks, and strive for
greatness. It urges ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author uses the words, Will and Won t Power, which really reminds readers that everything is
our decision, and we can either make decisions that benefit us or restrain us from our full potential.
Covey tells readers to prioritize and properly manage their time. He writes, putting first things first
can also help you learn to overcome your fears and be strong during hard moments (Covey 111).
Here, the author is attempting to persuade the reader by including some of the benefits of putting
first things first. Following this statement the author states, it takes courage and guts to stay true to
your first things... when the pressure is on (Covey 121). He then goes on describing the Comfort
Zone vs the Courage Zone, using graphs and example scenarios. Covey emphasizes on the
opportunities that courage can establish and the overall effects

DNA General Concepts
1. How does gel electrophoresis sort DNA fragments? Electrical charges (positive to negative and so
on). Also by size helps sort fragments as well. Small dna moves faster than larger ones do.
1. If each individual has such a small amount of DNA, how do the bands on the gel contain
enough DNA to be visible? By restriction enzymes then amplified by polymerase chain reaction to
make many to millions of copies of a single fragment.
1. Many genes only have a few possible alleles. For example, humans only have a few eye colors
and only four blood types. How can DNA tests definitively identify individuals when many men
have brown eyes or type A blood? The way this is done is by VNTR ( variable number tandem
repeats) the length varies from person to person and the base pairing also differs as well.

Part 3: Analyzing the Results
1. List the distances traveled (in mm) for the bands in the DNA Ladder in the table below.
Remember, smaller fragments travel farther than longer ones, so the top most band will be the

The Flowers By Alice Walker Essay
Alice Walker shows Myops innocence and subsequent loss thereof through her usage of vivid
imagery as well as the small setting and symbolism in The Flowers . Myop s sudden exposure to
the harsh reality of racism surrounding her shatters her innocence. The tone of the short story
changes abruptly showcasing the main characters shift in how she sees the world. For she is
suddenly and violently thrust into a world in which skin color dictates how others in society
will treat her. There is a clear switch in tone in The Flowers as Myop is exposed to the world
outside her home. The initial tone of the short story is carefree and child like. Though the
perspective of the story is third person omniscient initially, it is still evident that we are viewing
the story through a child s lens. The young protagonist skips lightly from hen house to pigpen to
smokehouse showing that she is happy, excited even, to enjoy the natural setting weaved around
her. As Myop explores, it becomes evident that her family s financial situation is less than ideal.
Wandering towards the woods, she leaves behind the rusty boards of her family s sharecropper
cabin (Walker). Now with little else to weave a setting in the reader s mind one can already picture
the scene as well as the time period. Very little is written about the setting outside of the family
home and the surrounding woods. This supports the childlike tone of the beginning of the story as a
young child would not have experienced the

Tequila Interchange Project Research Paper
The next time you bring a margarita to your lips, reflect on this phenomenon, cocktails would a lot
less interesting without the contributions of tequila bats. In fact, it is hard to imagine one existing
without the other.
Bats and agave plants have co evolved over millions of years, however that relationship was
disrupted decades ago by industrial farming practices in Mexico. In an effort to restore the natural
order the bat man of Mexico, Rodrigo Medellin wants to improve the habitats of these poorly
understood creatures. A simple change in the production of tequilaand agave spirits could be a boon
for both the bats and the tequila industry, improving the genetic diversity of domesticated agave
plants in the process.

The population has subsequently rebounded in the U.S., due in part to the tireless work of
Medellin and his conservationist colleagues living on either of the US Mexico border. The positive
outcome, along with Medellin s lifelong interest in bats led to his bat man moniker.
To further bat conservation, Medellin has joined forces with a handful of tequila producers and bar
tenders. Founded in 2011, the Tequila Interchange Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to
promoting the production sustainable agave spirits, which also helps bats.
According to their website, a simple shift in agricultural practices could be a boon for biodiversity.
By allowing 5 percent of the agave plants to flower about 225 plants per hectare, growers extend an
invitation to those responsible for maintaining the genetic diversity of agaves: the bats!
The owner of Mexican restaurants in Philadelphia, Roberto Duro started TIP with the goal of
overhauling the tarnished reputation tequila has had in the eyes of American consumers. In doing
so, he sought out Mexican academics to better understand the origins of agave spirits and their role
in Mexican culture. With its roots in the soil, ample sunshine and mestizo society, Tequila is very

Life Changing Events Essay
Life changing events can sometimes be difficult. In the stories I Never Had it Made, By Jackie

Rebecca Maskel. Melba Beals, Jackie Robinson, and Feng Ru all experienced life changing events

team and going to a white school as blacks.
Melba Beals was one of the Little Rock Nine to go to a white school as a black. When Melba and
the little rock nine first tried to go in the school segregation mobs had forbidden them to go. As
Beals said in the text I saw them about fifty uniformed soldiers of the 101st. This shows that just
because they did not make it in the first time they will make it in the second time. Despite all of
the time they wasted and still could not get in, they still went back every day until they were led
in by soldiers. But the main people who gave support to them are their parents and neighbors and
also the ministers of their church. As said in the text I recognized neighbors and even ministers
from our church. (Beals) This shows that they have plenty support as they walk up the steps of the
school and enter the school. Melba s experiences with breaking the color barrier shows that she
feels proud for what she had accomplished. She and the little rock nine were given

A Midsummer Night s Dream Research Paper
Titania, and Love: A Midsummer Night s Dream Interpretive Essay
(Word count: 1000)
The concept, and theme of love is thrown around a lot in literature, and Shakespeare s works are
no exception. A Midsummer Night s Dream is an exceptional showcase of the mysterious emotion
of love, and this essay will be focusing on the theme of love surrounding Titania in particular. In
this play, the motivations and subsequent actions of Titania are explored and show how love can
change people and their relationships. In A Midsummer Night s Dream , the little Indian boy, who
is being taken care of by Titania, is a major source of conflict in Titania and Oberon s marriage.
Oberon wants the little Indian boy to be one of his humble servants, but Titania ... Show more

Whilst she is sleeping, Oberon has a potion put into Titania s eyes. As soon as Titania awakes,

eye enthrallГЁd to thy shape. // And thy fair virtue s force perforce doth move me // on the first
view to say, to swear, I love thee. (65) This quote makes use of imagery. The potion that was put
into Titania was a love potion, which made her fall in love with the first person who she lays
eyes on when she awakes, who in this case, is Bottom, who has taken the form of an ass. Titania
adds: Thou art as wise as thou art beautiful. (65) Which signifies that she either already has, or
soon will fall in love with Bottom. This quote is an example of dramatic irony. The next morning,
when Titania wakes up, she feels as if she s had a nightmare: My Oberon! What visions have I
seen! // Methought I was enamour d of an ass (105). This quote demonstrates both exclamations,
and assonance. This quote tells us that the love potion used on Titania was not permanent, because
it has obviously worn off the morning after, as shown by her general disgust at the thought of being

Tropical Cyclones and Climate Change
Tropical cyclones (TCs) are of the most extreme and dangerous weather phenomena on Earth. In
the United States, landfalling TCs account for an average of $10 billion damages annually
(Pielke et al. 2008). Hurricane Katrina (2005) alone caused $81 billion of damages and took more
than 1,800 lives away. In developing countries, TC landfalls can be extremely detrimental. For
example, Cyclone Nargis (2008) took more than 130,000 lives in Myanmer (Burma) . Due to the
catastrophic nature of TCs, substantial efforts have been devoted to short term predictions of TC
track and intensity in an effort to minimize the damages and casualties. In recent years, the
relationship between TC activity and climate changehas attracted strong attentions in... Show more

At intraseasonal (30 90 day) scale, the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO, Madden and Julian 1972)
has substantial impacts upon retional TC activities in multiple basins; Indian Oceans (Hall et al.
2001, Bessafi and Wheeler 2006), western North Pacific (e.g., Liebmann et al. 1994), eastern North
Pacific (e.g., Maloney and Hartmann 2000a), and Gulf of Mexico (Maloney and Hartmann 2000b).
Association of these modes of variabilities to TC activity has contributed to substantial increase of
understanding in long term variation of TC activities in different regions. It is also true that the
modulations of seasonal to interannual variations of TC activities by these modes of variability
complicate the separation of natural variabilities and climate change signal. Recent studies have
identified some emerging trends in regional TC activities. Using observed TC track data, Webster
et al. (2005) reported increasing trends in intense (Category 4+ in the Saffir Simpson Hurricane
Scale) TCs in all TC basins. North Atlantic TC activity over the past 30 years has particularly
attracted strong interest in part due to the availability of more reliable observed TC track data
(discussed later in the chapter) and the noted increasing trends both in frequency and intensity.
Increase of North Atlantic intense storms is reflected to the increasing trend of the overall
destructiveness of hurricanes, as measured by the

Child Rearing Practices Shape And Influence Attitudes...
Illness refers to the ways in which the sick person, the members of the family and wider social
network perceive, live with, and respond to symptoms and disability. Illness and pain is a
subjective experience that varies between each individual person. Alisha Ghosh is my cousin; she
is a 22 year old female student, currently in her fourth year at the University of Waterloo. Alisha
suffers from sever chronic migraines which hinders and interferes with her daily life. Additionally,
Alisha s mother also sufferes from sever chronic migraines. It is evident that Alisha s attitude
towards painis highly influenced by her mother. Further more, when Alisha s mother would
experience pain from sever migraines she would isolate herself in her room and turn off all the
lights as it made her migraines worse. Similarly, whenever Alisha begins to experience migraine
pains she isolates herself into her dark room. This illustrates how child rearing practices shape
and influence attitudes towards the expectations of pain and how to deal with it. To begin with,
Alisha Ghosh is a highly active and hard working student, she is on her university s soccer team
and has a part time job at the mall. In addition, her chronic pain began in her freshmen year in

Marco Polo s Paradise In Heaven, Suzhou On Earth
When the Venetian merchant Marco Polo traveled to the orient, he saw many wondrous things.
Two cities that inspired him a lot were Suzhou and Beijing. In Suzhou he saw people who could
conquer the world and in Beijing he saw a city that had a standing truly unparalleled among the
cities of the World. These descriptions showed the immense greatness that both cities bestowed on
guests from abroad and it is something that hasn t changed over the years.
Over the years the Chinese gave Suzhou s grandeur this description: Paradise in Heaven, Suzhou
and Hangzhou on Earth. For Suzhou the splendor started in the year 514 BC when King Helu of
the Wu state decided to build a capital city near Lake Taihu. He tasked the project to his minister,
Wu Zixu, who designed the city to ensure environmental harmony. The effects of this can still be
seen today as modern day Suzhou is equal parts water and land.
Over the years this city has grown to become one of the most storied cities in all of China. Firstly,
Suzhou and its inhabitants have had a great impact of war. As the capital of the Wu state numerous
assaults were taken to cement the power of the state. Originally the name of the city was Wu to

The And Incarceration Of The American Prison System
The American prison finds its origin in Europe. Like most things American we have adopted and
adapted many of our beliefs and customs from our mother land. The punishment of confinement
was rare and unheard of in America before Eighteenth century. The English concept of prison and
incarceration did not even take root until the late Eighteenth Century (Hirsch, 1992). Now,
American s cannot claim that they invented prisons or the concept of confining criminal offenders
within facilities that keep them separate from society. However, they can accredit themselves with
championing the concept of prisonreformation. Much like its English counterpart the early
American prison system, which would one day grow to be an integral part of the expansive
American Criminal Justice System, had an ugly and brutal start. Confinement conditions for
Prisoners were harsh and unrelenting. Most Facilities designed to house criminal offenders were
over populated, under staffed, and lacked necessary resources to support their growing population
of inmates (Clear Cole, 2003). However, over the years, America has made many strives to correct
the errors of their predecessors. This paper will detail the early American Prison System and its
journey through reformation to become the modern Prison system that we know today.
Early American Jails and Work Houses The first people to colonize America were not only settlers,
but convicts (Hirsch, 1992). During the beginning of the seventeenth century

Left Ventricular Assist Devices Essay
Introduction
Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs) have increased durability and patient survival on the
people who live with heart failure. These devices are mechanical pumps which can work as a
bridge to transplantation or as destination therapy to help the heart to follow its tasks properly.
Asgari and Bonde [1] presented a new totally implantable physiologic left ventricular assist device
system in pulsatile and continuous modes using wireless networks. The authors [1] have proposed
a great contribution to use wireless powering, monitor, communication and control in the field of
implantable control of ventricular assist devices. However, many issues will appear in the result of
the proposed system which needs more investigations in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To investigate the feasibility and implantability of the proposed methodology, the authors tested
physiologic controller in two large female pigs in vivo experiments. The results showed that the
suggested controller (UMC Physio), consumes less power compared with the HeartMate II (axial
pump) controller and HeartWare (centrifugal pump) ventricular assist device controller.
Critique
The system presented wireless network for monitor, communication, control and powering of the
left ventricular assist device systems which is a novel and significant research for LVADs
implantation [1]. However, if there are not internet access and wireless network (via smartphone) at
the same time due to malfunction in antenna or network, limitation in range and other issues, the
proposed system will fail to monitor and control the LVAD in patients, and therefore it will result in
dangerous conditions or death.
Wireless connections have harmful effects on the health of people and especially on blood, the heart,
and the autonomic nervous system when the radiation is continuous and long term [2]. Therefore, it
is recommended to reduce electrosmog exposure and prevent wireless networks for communication,
monitor, control and powering of the LVADs.
Although the main aim of the research published by Asgari and Bonde was to propose a wireless
method for LVAD systems, it is not acceptable that the author did not compare proposed controller
with the other famous methods such as preload based

The Australian Gold Rush was often described as the making of a country. The Gold Rush was

Medea Hook Analysis
A mother who kills her children must be psychotic, monstrous, and barbaric, right? Every story has
a hook (something to make the audience interested in learning more about the story.) Medea s
hook is that Medea murdered her two children to get vengeance on her husband. The hook causes
many people to create a preconceived notion of who Medeais as a person. However, if someone
takes the time to understand the circumstances and boundaries Medea lives within that person
would come to understand that Medea is not the monster that the hook makes her out to be. If one

Before diving into how Medea exemplifies this quote, one must first question why it s a woman?
Why isn t the saying, hell hath no fury like a man scorned? Critics want to say that Medea is the
stereotypical woman overcome with heartbreak and hormones and therefore she suffers temporary
insanity by murdering their children, but this is not the case. Medea gave Jason every part of her
and then some. To show his gratitude, Jason decided not only to say that all of those sacrifices
were meaningless, but to also go on to steal part of her identity as well. Jason stole Medea s past,
present, and future by deciding to leave her. Once one is able to empathize with all the pain and
suffering Medea endures she is able to understand why Medea reacts with the extremities that
she does. Logically, Medea does the exact same thing to Jason as he did to her when he left her.
While Medea is not able to take Jason s past, she is able to take his present and future in the
worst way possible, which is exactly what she does. Critics want to judge Medea before
attempting to empathize and understand her story. Killing her own children to strip Jason of
everything is a punishment so unimaginable, some might say it is even worse than hell. William
Congreve once wrote, Heav n has no Rage, like Love to Hatred turn d,/ Nor Hell a Fury, like a

Argumentative Reflection For Student Learning For Children...
Hello Czarina,
1) I like that you mentioned that students learn when they are having fun and when they are
interested in the lesson; this seems especially important for children with ADHD. It is certainly
important to treat Sam the same way as the other children, while also correcting behavior that
disrupts the class, as you mentioned.
2) I wanted to share a motivational video about ADHD as opposed to the negative aspects of
ADHD so I m glad you enjoyed Stephen Tonti s talk! As for things that he isn t interested in
taking him a long time to complete, I also wondered if this is a normal challenge that most people
face, but is just exacerbated for him because of his ADHD. Also, I can t help but wonder what kind
of a role personality plays in this phenomenon.
3) You brought up a great point, inattentiveness can be dangerous! Too often I see people taking
selfies while driving, and on their phones in general. I also liked your point on internal validation,
which I don t hear discussed (or written about) often enough.
Hello Kinda,
1) Great ideas on how to help Sam! Giving him an active job in the classroom would allow him to
speak and move in the class without it being disrupting to his teacher or his peers.
2) Glad you enjoyed the video. As you pointed out, Steven Tonti did a great job pointingout the
useful qualities of ADHD instead of the negative sides of the symptoms, which is usually all that
is discusses. Also, I m glad you brought up the dangers of a lack of

Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills ( Calp )
1.Compare and contrast BICS and CALP. Name one point that you think teachers should know
about second language acquisition.
Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills (BICS) refers to a student s ability to understand basic
conversational English, sometimes called social language. Cognitive Academic Language
Proficiency (CALP) refers to a student s ability to effectively understand and use the more
advanced and complex language necessary for success in academic endeavors, sometimes referred
to as academic language.
The difference between this two is that BISCS is a more easy way of communication because is
base on a regular and basic language. CALP refers to a more technical vocabulary and
comprehension of an advance language.
One point teachers should be aware of language acquisition is that the child ability to participate in
a classroom may be affect because of the lack of communication, must of the time students that are
second language learners tend to stay quite and demonstrate lack of understanding. It is important to
identify these students to be able to approach and teach them adequately.
2.Think about a lesson that you might teach. Briefly describe it and at least four types of sheltered
instructional supports you might provide for your ELL students.
When teaching a lesson about seasons I would have the students seat at the rug in a circle. I would

Reformation And The Counter-Reformation
The Renaissance is one of the Catholic churches highest peak during the ages. Yet, much
speculation and riots occur due to the intense demand for reformation and Martin Luther s attempt
to bring into realization the church s dark secrets. In the mist of division the Catholic Church in
order to counter act the accusations that were made against them invested their time in the Counter
Reformation. The Counter Reformation created a restoring of the church. The Council of Trent was
created in order to help answer the questions posed against the church and bring back the faith and
trust of the people back to the Catholic Church. This Counter Reformation is highly significant to

Gian Lorenzo Bernini is identified as the prominent architect during the Baroque era. Bernini s
breath taking monuments is the main reason Rome and the Vatican still flourished during the
counter reformation. Bernini is the creator of the famous colonnades and piazza at Saint Peter s.
Bernini s main patronage was Pope Urban VII. The Cathedra Petri was one of Bernini s
masterpieces which exemplified his way of decorating richly and his gift of sculpting. David,
Bernini s version, shows the baroque style in his sculptors as well. David depicts strong emotion
and concentration in mist battle. Inside the church of Saint Peter s, he still lives on in his work
and is responsible for the Baldacchino, the canopy of bronze, which is located at the main altar.
Francesco Borromini is known to be Bernini s close rival. Borromini is said to use geometric
figure (New World Encyclopedia) in his designs. This is significant because it shows the
complexity in his style of Baroque. It shows that though far from perfect to the eye, Baroque
architecture really is made from perfect components in order to create one large piece. The entire
structure must be able to flow smoothly without losing that complex aspect. For instance, in his
Sant Ivo alla Sapienza Borromini must execute a spiral formation as a dome. Borromini s most
significant architecture is his San Carlo alle Quattro

The Third Man Sparknotes
The Third Man published in 1949 by Graham Green is a fascinating book. Graham Green (1904
1991) was said to be one of the greatest novelists of the twentieth century, writing everything
from short stories, autobiographies, to children s books. What I found most interesting about
the book was that the whole story is told from the viewpoint of Major Calloway and not from
Rollo Martins. This is determined from the beginning of the book that Rollo Martins, a broke
writer from London, has been presented as a man who is loyal and believes that friendship is
almost like a marriage. It is evident when he arrives at the cemetery in Vienna and is told by
Calloway that the body being buried is his best friend from childhood, Harry Lime. Rollo Martins...

Martins at that point decides to go home and then tell Calloway: I ll be getting back to England
(Greene 110). Martins gained some hope from an inspiration to investigate accusations to find
out if they were true when he believed he saw a figure that resembled Lime. Later in the book,
Martins set up a meeting with Lime and hearing Lime s own confession, Martins belief and
loyalty in his best friend disappeared completely because Lime s disregard for human life
produces a sad disappoint for Martins. Lime won t stop committing penicillin racketeering, so
Martins thinks it s up to him to do something to stop it. This fact brings evidence in showing that
Martins opinion of humanism must be placed over friendship. He decides to tell Calloway that he
will provide assistance to the police to help arrest Lime. By making this decision and the fact that
Martins manages to kill Lime, Greene, undoubtedly, wanted to convey that no matter how strong a
friendship may be, that it means very little compared to the value of human life. Last, it is
interesting to look at the use of viewpoint used to help express the theme of the book The Third
Man as perceived through Calloway s point of view. By using Calloway s point of view, Greene
interprets the theme through the viewpoint

Malnutrition And Malnutrition Among Children
Malnutrition Amongst Children in India
People who are malnourished lack nutrients the body needs for proper health and development.
Malnutrition is the inadequate nutrition caused by the lack of a balanced diet or by disorders of the
digestive system in which the nutrients from food cannot be absorbed properly (dictionary.com).
Chronic malnutrition can cause severe health problems. In recent years, India has had an
unprecedented economic growth. It improved in education, agriculture, and technology, but it still
has the highest prevalence of underweight children in the world. Half of the children are
underweight in Bimaru states of India. (sagepub.com). There are many causes and consequences of
malnutrition. Since malnutrition is affecting a large population of children in India, it is important
to find solutions.
Maternal characteristics are a reason why children are malnourished. A study found that the
prevalence s of stunting, wasting and underweight were greater for children of illiterate mothers,
and lowest among children of mothers with an education of high school or more. Also, when
mother s consume tobacco and alcohol, the child has a greater risk of being malnourished ( S.
Rajarm, Lisa K. Zottarelli and T.S Sunil). Malnutrition starts even when a baby is not even born.
Undernourished mothers give birth to underweight babies, which affects the future physical and
mental well being of the child. The child rearing practices in India unfortunately are highly

Auguste Comte s Sociological Approach To The Scientific...
Sociology is the study of human social relationships and institutions and the study of social
problems. Sociology investigates the social causes and consequences of such things as prejudice
and discrimination. Auguste Comte first used the term sociology in 1838 to refer to the scientific
study of society. He argued that society needs scientific knowledge based on facts and evidence to
solve its problems. Spencer suggested that society will correct its own defects through the natural
process of survival of the fittest. Marx claimed that social conflict, especially class conflict, and
competition mark all societies. Durkheim stressed the importance of studying social facts or
patterns of behavior characteristic of a particular group. He advocated the use of systematic
observation to study sociological events, but he also recommended that sociologists avoid
considering people s attitudes when explaining society. Weber argued that sociologists must also
take into account people s interpretations of events; not just the events themselves. He believed that
sociologists must inquire about people s thoughts, feelings, and perceptions regarding their own
behaviors. These Sociologists were the main players during the 19th and 20th century, and their
prior work led to the development of Sociologyin America. Sociologists throughout the decades
have sought to develop a scientific approach to the study and resolve such issues as prejudice and
discrimination. Early

The Guest By Daru, Balducci, And The Arab
Throughout the story of the guest, there are interactions made between the three characters, Daru,
Balducci, and the Arab. These interactions can be analyzed and interpreted in many different ways,
especially by conflicting emotions that can be seen in Daru pertaining to the situation created by
the presence of the other two characters. An example of the presence of conflicting emotions is that
although he shows much hospitality to both of his guests in the time that they are in his residence,
he has obvious negative feelings toward the Arab s situation. The many times that Daru is
hospitable but also feeling ambivalence towards the situation generates many possible

He also gives the Arab all the hospitality that one could offer a guest; Daru cooks a meal and
allows the Arab to eat first even though this could just be more hospitality there could also be a
much deeper level to this act (Camus 2258). He could also be showing his sympathy and
disagreement as to how the Arab has been treated and believes that maybe he should have just
been left alone to live his life according to the law of his people. Later Daru even makes the Arab
a bed to sleep in for the night and does not change his nightly routine or keep a gun by his bed
(Camus 2259). This shows that Daru sees him as a person thus making him deserving of respect.
In this act he also gives the Arab a few more things besides respect including trust and if he so
chooses to take it, the chance to escape. With all of the chances that Daru gives him to escape it
can be concluded that he either hopes that the Arab will run away so that he does not have to
take him to prison or it could also be a test of the Arab s character. The fact that he does not take
any of the chances to escape is proof that the Arab is a respectable man in terms of Daru s
standards and maybe that is one of the reasons that he did kill his cousin, as the Arabs whole
goal in life may be to be respectable and not a coward by running away, as his cousin did. All of
these acts of hospitality greatly affect how Daru could be interpreted to be feeling about the
situation of the Arab and his

The funding was taken from Baltimore s local county highway improvement project. The funding
reallocation creates two major problems for Baltimore. The first problem is that city commuters
use the local highway daily to get to work. Secondly, funding for the Baltimore s rapid bus service
to transport commuters to the city no longer exist and therefore increasing traffic congestion.
Commuters now have to endure increasing traffic congestion because more cars are on as road that
cannot improve because funding was given to another project.
Comparing the financial cost of the interstate with the cost of having to reallocate funding or
stopping programs in an effort to decrease traffic congestion will create a greater economic
downturn if not done in moderation as well as a decrease in confidence in lawmakers. The
lawmakers will feel the decrease in confidence by citizens during elections. Unless the local
government can generate and use other sources of revenue to continue highway improvement, the
decision to remove the city s funding is not practical.
Revenue Sources
Baltimore is no different than any other metropolitan city trying to close the gap between its
resources and meeting the needs of the city. In past years the city s major source of resources came
from state and federal funding to finance projects such as road improvements. Because the

Zeus In Frankenstein
As the leader of Mount Olympus, the gods, and the universe, Zeus was often looked up to as the
shining example excellence in Greek society. According to the people s beliefs, Zeus was a partial
reason for their creation, as he gave the titan, Prometheus, the task of creating man. Prometheus
created man out of clay, yet the people looked up to Zeusfor motivation and inspiration. However,
Zeus was not always a role model, committing adultery against his wife, Hera, and letting his anger

This can be seen when he says, Oh, Frankenstein! Generous and self devoted being! What does it
avail that I now ask thee to pardon me? I who irretrievably destroyed thee by destroying all thou
lovest. Alas! He is cold, he cannot answer me (Shelley, 221). In the following pages, however,
the monster admits to having shown a lack of compassion during the murders of Henry Clerval
and Victor s wife, Elizabeth. Even though the monster seems to be mindlessly killing people
close to Victor, one can argue that his rampage was based on humanity. Before the murders, the
creature simply seeks a female companion from his creator, to be able to, interchange of those
sympathies necessary for [its] being (Shelley, 147). While Victor did initially comply, he throws
the idea out the window, and as a result, the monster experiences true heartbreak. This heartbreak
leads the monster to commit the crimes that it did, inflicting a fairly equal amount of pain upon
Frankenstein compared to the suffering inflicted on the monster. For example, Victor promotes the
suffering by taking away the companion and creating the creature in a wretched form.
Furthermore, the monster is extremely young, so like a child crying over a bump on a table,
Frankenstein s creation is overreacting to a situation that he has never encountered before. He
solely acts out of a long for humanity and equality in the world he was forced into. This is seen on
page 222, when Victor s monster says to Robert Walton, he sought his own enjoyment in feelings
and passions form the indulgence of which I was forever barred, then impotent envy and bitter
indignation filled me with an insatiable thirst for vengeance (Shelley,

Living Here Was Nothing Special
I live in a small town called Ocean City, New Jersey. To me, living here was nothing special.
Ironically, anytime I say that is where I m from I hear, Wait, you live in Ocean City?! That is my
favorite place in the world. We go there every summer! How can a place be a bother to someone
and an amazing get away to another? I went to Ocean City High School, where I could walk five
feet to the beach. Who could hate that? I sure could. I begged my parents to let me transfer my
first two years. I went to a Catholic school from kindergarten through 8th grade while everyone
else at my school attended the public middle schools in the area, which meant that everyone was
already friends and I had to make new ones. This was my first time ever in public schooling, and
I felt like a lost fish in the sea. Obviously things got better and I ended up making some of the
best friendships that I know will last a lifetime, but I still can t deny that I thought I could say June
18th, 2015, graduation, was going to be the best day of my life. Then things changed. This summer
I worked on the beach and was never done later than 12:00, so I went every single day after I
clocked out. To say I gained an appreciation for where I live would be an understatement. There
is nothing more relaxing than hearing the crashes of the big blue waves slowly putting me to
sleep as I lay in the warm sun. I was slowly beginning to realize why everyone loves this place so
much. Excitement for heading off to college

Zombies Classification Essay
A Zombie is defined as a reanimated corpse that has been turned into a creature capable of
movement but not of rational thought, which feeds on human flesh. For most, Zombies are a
fictional part of favorite tv shows or movies. Although there are many different types of
zombies, most can be categorized into three groups: Stereotypicals, Oldies, and Uniques.
Stereotypical zombies are your movie zombies. These include runners, stalkers, walkers, and
herds. Runners are the fastest type of zombies. They get the name Runners for a reason, because
they can run. Walkers are zombies that obviously walk. They aren t able to run, but can still
move at a reasonable pace. Stalkers are zombies that are not able to run, but move faster than
walkers. They are your speed walkers, and go the speed of someone skipping. A herd is a group
of zombies that travel together. They are the stereotypical group that takes over a camp or traps
survivors. Herds consist of Runners, Walkers, and Stalkers.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

stereotypicals, but can sneak up on you if you are not careful. Lurkers are actually smart for being
dead. They pretty much just sit and wait, acting dead until someone comes near. Once someone
approaches they bite them or try to. They can be very dangerous due to their persona of being a
corpse. Bonies are decomposed zombies who are at their final straw. They pretty much do nothing
unless you re dumb enough to just hand them your flesh. They are probably the least dangerous
zombie, but they have probably bit a few

Injection. The injection is given once every 90 days.
Pregnancy can still occur with any of these hormonal contraceptive methods. If you have any
suspicion that you might be pregnant, take a pregnancy test and talk to your health care provider.
Estrogen and progesterone contraceptives
Estrogen and progesterone contraceptives can prevent pregnancy by:
Stopping the release of an egg (ovulation).
Thickening the mucus of the cervix, making it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus.
Changing the lining of the uterus. This change makes it more difficult for an egg to implant.
Progesterone contraceptives
Progesterone only contraceptives can prevent pregnancy by:
Blocking ovulation. This occurs in many women, but some women will continue to ovulate.
Preventing the entry of sperm into the uterus by keeping the cervical mucus thick and sticky.
Changing the lining of the uterus. This change makes it more difficult for an egg to implant.
Side effects

The Gold Of The Bronze Style
In China, bronze was often employed with ritual vessels, and this can be best seen with a
comparison between an eleventh century B.C.E. you vessel and a fourth century hu vessel that
were standard in this time period. These pieces were in high demand during this period from
feudal dignitaries starting during the Shang period. They served the purpose of holding wine for
ritual ceremonies. The hu especially acted as a vessel for diluting wine with water. While the hu
vessel was popular in the Eastern Zhou territory, the you vessel was most frequently used during
the early Western Zhou territory. The you ritual wine vessel was common for its time period as it,

This was common during this period, as they represented as zoomorphic masks, where humans
are made to look like animals. Around the birds, the artist designed geometric images to fill in
the space. In order to separate the images in the background of the you, the artist incorporates
bands. This creates a symmetrical layout of the different images around the vessel, as they
repeat. The animal motifs outside of the background also repeat symmetrically, as you circle the
you. While the hu vessel was made around seven centuries later, it features similar decorations as
the you vessel. The pictorial representations also follow a band structure. Although the majority of
the bands are filled with geometric designs, one band repeats second from the top and second
from the bottom and it features birds. These birds are less naturalistic than ones featured in the
you vessel, but they serve a stylistic purpose. At this time, the hunt is also a characteristic subject
of some bronze vessels of the late Zhou period. Often it is less pictorially handled, as on vessels

The Internationalisation Of Higher Education
The internationalisation of Higher Education is a mainstream focus, however a review of the
literature highlights issues of concerns to some scholars and researchers. Callan (2006) states that a
reading of the literature on the internationalisation, both European and world wide (particularly
North America) shows that.... the concept has been understood and applied in a highly variable
fashion (Callan,2006, p. 16). Kehm and Teichler (2007) concur, postulating that the
internationalisation of HE is fraught with strong political undercurrents embracing transnational
and off shore campuses and issues of cultural diversity and quality control (Kehm and Teichler,
2007, p. 261). Careful analysis of the literature would seem to support Knight s view that
Internationalisation is changing the world of Higher Educationand globalisation is changing the
world of internationalisation (Knight,2004, p.5).
Welch (2002) looks at the historical and economic background on globalisation and links this to the
phenomenon of internationalisation of higher education. He summarises the works of authors
including Sklair, Harvey and Giddens. He looks at the rationales that have been utilised to justify
the internationalisation of HE, including Knights taxonomy of political, economic and academic
rationales. Welch also examines international studentflows, as well as the extent to which
internationalisation impacts on Australian universities. He examines the growth of the international

Don t Pay Attention On How The Media Portray Us
I also learn that we don t pay attention on how the media portray us in television. Two of my
favorite shows on television are Scandal and Empire. I now learned that those shows are bad for
black American community. Those show the black community in a negative light. For example
empire, the show is about a black drug dealer who got out of the ghetto and became a multi
millionaire and his wife at the time took the plea for him and went to jail for sixteen so he could
become what he is. His three sons are all broken. Andre, the oldest went to an Ivy League college
and is now working in the empire but he is messed up, he has bipolar disorder and his father
never showed him love, the middle child Jamal is gay and you know most people in the black
community don t accept that so his father don t respect him, he have daddy issues and the
youngest one Hakeem, is messed up also because he has mommy issues because cookie went to jail
and never really took care him because she was behind bars. Cookie is a strong loyal woman and
her money and power hungry. She is full of attitude. Everyone loves her. Basically the show is
just full of black stereotypes. The show is not a bad show because the show also portrayed the
issues of black American todays. So it is not so bad. You see there is like one positive black show

Theory X and Theory Y
McGregor referred to the opposing motivational methods that he identified, as Theory X and Theory
Y management. Each assumes that the manager s role is to organize resources, including people, to
best benefit the company. However, beyond this commonality, they re quite dissimilar. While
Theory X represents the traditional view of management, Theory Y represents the newer attitudes in
organizational psychology.
This does not mean that all managers believe entirely in Theory X or Theory Y. Most managers
probably believe that people are a combination of both, with tendency to behave as one type.
Theory X and Theory Y tend to influence and get influenced by External and Internal Modifiers.
This can be understood better from the diagram given below.

Theory X Traditional View of Direction Control
Theory X is based on the assumptions that the average human beings dislike work, wishes to avoid

of organizational objectives. Theory X management style therefore requires close, firm supervision
with clearly specified tasks.
Essentially, Theory X assumes that the primary source of most employee motivation is monetary,

It was stated that the man he encountered had known Browns elders as well. Goodman was led to a
large assembly and he found many townspeople that he knew gathered around an altar surrounded
by burning trees. He recognized many of these faces and it changed the image he had toward them.
From the audiences perspective, we understand many of the stories characters have the names of
Salem residents charged with witchcraft; and its major action takes place in the noisy pasture
historical documents of, the period designate as a witches gathering place (Bunge 434). At the
time, Brown had seen many of the people that attended the assembly to be sin free. This is
symbolic because the assembly takes place in what the audience knows to be as a town that has
had numerous witch trials. This led him to realize that everyone has their flaws but he may not be
able to accept them. This explains a concept of the story involving the loss of innocence. When he
discovers the town in this meeting, his faith is being tested. He is not able to cope and has reason
to believe that he is now held to a higher standard than others because the ones he thought were

Juvenile Sentencing
Juvenile courts have a wide range of sentencing options (usually called disposition orders ) that they
can impose on juveniles or youth offenders who are found to be delinquent (that is, finding that the
minor violated a criminal law). Typically, disposition options fall into two camps: incarceration and
non incarceration. One non incarceration option in particular probation forms the backbone of the
juvenile justice system. Read on to learn about the different kinds of sentencing options used in
juvenile court, the ins and outs of probation, and whether a disposition order can be appealed or
changed. (For more information on juvenile court cases, see Nolo s article Juvenile Court: An
Overview.) Incarcerating Juvenile Delinquents... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Probation has been called the workhorse of the juvenile justice system according to the Office of
Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, probation is the most common disposition in juvenile
cases that receive a juvenile court sanction. In an average year, about half of all minors judged to
be delinquent receive probation as the most restrictive sentence. Specific terms of probation vary
widely from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, and from case to case. Typically, a juvenile must obey both
the general terms of probation and any additional requirements tailored to the particular case. The
court usually expects that parents or a guardian will help the juvenile fulfill the conditions of the
probation order. These conditions can include community service, attendance at a certain school,
counseling, curfews, and orders that the juvenile not associate with certain individuals (as in cases
involving suspected gang members). As part of probation, some juveniles must attend special day
treatment programs that provide additional monitoring and educational services including anger
management classes, social skills building, and substance abuse education. Probation Officers A
juvenile placed on probation is assigned to a probation officer who monitors the youth s
compliance with the court s disposition order. The juvenile meets with the probation officer
periodically (weekly or twice month, for example), and the juvenile s parents or

My Dream Of Becoming An Information Security Essay
As a child, I grew up enjoying mathematics and science; this led to my dream of becoming an
Information Security Analyst by majoring in Computer Engineering in college. I chose this
profession because over the past couple of years, the world has become more dependent on
technology, which means that there is more technology that needs to be developed and better
network securitywill need to be implanted to meet the progressing world s standards. By being in
this profession, there will always be job opportunities in small and large companies because
networks, computers, cell phones and many other gadgets are prone to being compromised. For
example, Boeing is a prestigious, global company that is one of the leading manufacturers of cyber
security that offers several internship and job opportunities to undergraduates and graduates. Future
graduates will be able to learn reliable information on what they need to become an information
securityanalyst because an intensive amount of time was taken to research and find credible sources.
Prior to graduating, future analysts will need to have knowledge of the profession and how they
will be able to become an information security analyst. Graduates should expect to plan and carry
out security measures to protect an organization s computer networks and systems in this
profession(United). Analysts also have duties such as monitoring the organization s networks for
security breaches, conduct investigations when breaches occur, install

Characteristics Of The Chesapeake And New England
With the discovery of the New World in 1492, came the English in hopes of starting again in a new
land. Through violence and other vile tactics, the English were able to remove most of the natives
from the land and start creating their new societies. While this rebuilding occurred, the English split
into two distinctive groups known as The Chesapeake and New England. In documents from both
colonies, set in the 1600 s, we will examine how the same group of people can have completely
different social characteristics, economics, and religion.
In the two regions, social structures completely differed from each other because they had
different goals for how their territory would function. In New England, the structure was almost
a complete copy of the one they had back home. Document B suggest this when it lists the
travelers of those who would be arriving in New England. The Document implies that complete
families along with their servants and herders came to New England with the idea to contain
their tight knit community way of living. They wanted everyone to be comfortable in this new
space that ultimately was there to serve as a religious sanctuary that spread the word of god.
Unlike the New England citizens who aspired to be connected the people from The Chesapeake
lived individual work focused life styles. In Document C it describes the people traveling to The
Chesapeake as most men who were at the working age. This implies that The Chesapeake citizens
lived a

Definition Of Poverty
There are a number of definitions of poverty. It is a multifaceted notion which includes social,
economic, and political components. How we define poverty is critical to politics, policy and
academic debates about the concept. It is bound up with explanations and has implications for
solutions. (Lister, 2004 as cited in Class notes, 2017). The United Nations, first established in 1945
shortly after the second world war, was created to promote international co operation and maintain
international order (UN, 2017). The global term for povertyis defined by using the Gross National
Product (GNP) and Gross Domestic Product(GDP). Both defined by the World Bank, GNP uses
market valuations to measure national income: GNP per capita (each person) gives an
indication of the typical material living standards of a nation, whereas, GDP is a measure of the
total market value of goods and services output and their economic activity. The United Nations
set the bar at the minimum daily income of $1.25 (93 pence) per day (Class notes, 2017). If you
are living on less than this you are classed as living in absolute poverty. How poverty is measured
is a contested concept and has had researchers long trying to establish a fixed method of
determining. The four main concepts are absolute poverty, relative poverty and deprivation,
consensual poverty, and social exclusion (Class notes, 2017). The concept of absolute poverty was
developed in the 19th century by Joseph Rowntree and was

John Ford’s acclaimed film The Man Who Shot Liberty...
John Ford s acclaimed film The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) is well known among
cinema buffs and historians to have emerged out of a brutal, often contentious process. Tension
between the lead actors, as well as tension between the actors and the director, spawned some of
the best behind the scenes stories of on set rivalry and outright pettiness that still circulate in an
industry that is primarily built on controversy and rumor. The film itself must be regarded as a
masterpiece. This assessment is due in part to the brilliant performances by the cast and also in
part to an elegant, carefully crafted script. That said; one of the main reasons that the film
distinguishes itself above many of ford s other brilliant films is due to... Show more content on

This image is itself, an indication that the film intends to deal with a clash of ages or civilizations
within the context of American history. The train station and train are symbols for the conquering
of the West and the industrialization of America. In other words, the film expresses important
ideas about the age old theme of progress versus tradition, as well as society versus the individual.
The central question of the film is whether or not the kind of frontier justice of the West, which was
built on gun fighting and local law enforcement, was adaptable to the modern age. The character of
Ransom Ranse Stoddard (James Stewart) symbolizes the transition of American society by earning
his fame as a politician. The true frontiersman, Tom Doniphon (John Wayne), suffers a drastically
different fate. Despite being the man who actually shot Liberty Valance, Doniphon remains
unknown to fame. This is Ford s way of communicating to the audience that those who are in power
in our society are often in power through no power of their own. Also that the true spirit of America
resides in the common man, rather than in the man who is celebrated and attains social power and
influence.
Given these facts, the film can be seen as a cautionary tale considering the present day
homogenization of culture. With an increase in social conformity comes a decrease in personal
morality. This is shown by the

Essay about Foreign Policy
The Roosevelt Corollary greatly affected American foreign policy. It was in sharp contrast to the
Monroe Doctrine, put in place to stop foreign intervention with the American continents. In 1823
President Monroe implemented US policy that stated European powers were not allowed to
colonize or interfere with the newly budding United Statesor the Americas. In 1904 President
Roosevelt expanded upon this policy in response to European intervention with Latin America.
This policy became known as the Roosevelt Corollary. The document echoed the style of
leadership President Roosevelt became synonymous with. This more aggressive form of policy
became known as Big Stick Diplomacy. Foreign policy in the United States would forever be...

The economy was expanding and the US became more interested in the well being of surrounding
economies. The Dominican Republic was in debt to various European nations at this time. They
were having problems paying their debts and chose to stop paying them. In response to this issue,
President Theodore Roosevelt formulated an extension to the Monroe Doctrine. The Roosevelt
Corollary, as it became to be known, gave the US the power to intervene with European powers
coming west in an attempt to collect debts.2 The fear was that Europe, in an attempt to collect
debts, would occupy and control the country in debt. With the Panama Canal on the scope, this
would hinder economic stimulus in the US. President Roosevelt s beliefs are best captured in the
Corollary when he stated:
It is not true that the United States feels any land hunger or entertains any projects as regards the
other nations of the Western Hemisphere save such as are for their welfare. All that this country
desires is to see the neighboring countries stable, orderly, and prosperous. Any country whose
people conduct themselves well can count upon our hearty friendship. If a nation shows that it
knows how to act with reasonable efficiency and decency in social and political matters, if it keeps
order and pays its obligations, it need fear no interference from the United States.

The Three Major Theories Of Social Change In Society
Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed (Cesar Chavez). Social change, is exactly that,
an alteration in the social order of a society. The three major theories of social change include:
evolutionary theory, functionalist theory and conflict theory. Evolutionary theory is society viewed
as moving in a definite direction, simple to complex social structures. Functionalist theory is a
societal system of interconnected parts that work together in harmony to maintain a state of
balance. The conflict theory claims society is in state of continuous conflict due to competition
for limited resources. In this contingent powerful groups can maintain the status quo. Society has
changed over the years. One social change in society would be social media. Being able to share
opinions so freely has become a hot topic in today s news. For example, social media not only
allows gateways to others confidential information but it also serves as a way for terrorist to send
threats that can be seen by the public. With social media, comes technology which creates new
possibilities. Computer technology; shrinks the world by decreasing time and distance between
sources of information. It improves medical care with quick diagnostic and treatment information
through video consultation, and increases educational learning options and workplace options. The
negative effects of technology consist of amplified surveillance of people and condensed privacy.

Napoleon Bonaparte s Rise To Power
Napoleon Bonaparte Although Napoleon faced several struggles while rising to power, he was
eventually able to achieve military status and better the French government during his reign as
the leader of France. Bonaparte was a bold and ambitious leader who worked diligently at a
young age to gain the positions that he held. Life for Napoleon was never easy while he was
growing up, ruling France, or being defeated by the European powers. In Corsica on August 15,
1769, Carlos and Letizia gave birth to their second of what would soon be eight children, and they
named him Napoleon. Napoleon Bonaparte was born into a family from the Third Estate, which
often made life very challenging for him and his family (History.com Staff, 2009). After only...

In 1821 the Russians denied their support for Napoleon s Continental System that he had put in
place as a means to block British trade in Europe. Napoleon immediately penetrated Russia, but
quickly learned that defeating them would be much more laborious than he had initially
anticipated (History.com Staff, 2009). The Russians had developed a clever tactic, where they
would retreat and sabotage everything along their path whenever Napoleon s army would
advance. As a result, Napoleon and his men were led deeper into Russia, but found themselves
with few supplies. Winter was rapidly approaching, which contributed to the heavy casualties
that were experienced on both battlefronts (Dugdale, P.T., 2006). Shortly after Napoleon s retreat,
he was defeated and sent into exile by European powers. Elba, an island just off of the British
coast was where he would stay until his escape back to France. Once back in France, he ruled
once again for 100 days, but with each passing day Europe forced Napoleon further away from
his glory and prestige (McLynn, F., 1997). Napoleon continued to put up a fight, but eventually
at the Battle of Waterloo he was finally defeated and sent into exile once again. He was no longer
sent to Elba but instead to Saint Helen where he would later take his last breathe. He died in 1821
at the age of just 51, and was believed to have died from stomach

Mammy Archetype
All African Americans have been portrayed in stereotypical roles since their arrival into American
society for the entertainment and amusement of others. Many people find it difficult to appreciate
the diversity of the African American women. So instead of trying to do this, they create identities
based on negative stereotypes. There are several negative stereotypes associated with the African
Americanwoman. The Mammy archetype is the one chosen to be analyzed in this essay. Collins
described the mammy as the faithful, obedient domestic servant. Created to justify the economic
exploitation of house slaves and sustained to explain Black women s long standing restriction to

Mammy is also seen as a very loyal and faithful woman to the one she cares for, but still not
respected.
Like the traditional mammy figure, the modern day mammy is almost always large, asexual, and
wise. One factor that might separate the modern day mammy from the traditional mammy is that
the modern day mammy seems to have a little more attitude or sass. She also comes in many
different skin tones, but still not light skin.
Mabel Madea Simmons is a fictional character created and played by Tyler Perryhimself. The
character is a tough elderly black woman. Madea gets even, mostly in a bad way. Madea is also
highly overreactive. She is seen willingly threatening the use of deadly weapons, destroying
property, using physical violence, and she loves to take on the law. Because of her overreactive
ways, Madea has repeatedly landed herself in court, anger management classes, house arrest, and
even prison.
Despite some of the negative traits that she does possess, Madea does exhibit the traits of the
Mammy such as: being a nurturer, a caregiver, and a protector, while also maintaining the basic
appearance of a Mammy. Historically, Mammy was shown to have extreme loyalty to the white
family that she cared for and showed devotion towards them while not showing a lot of attention
to her own family, if she even had one at all. Madea does this but in her own way. She has the
same loyalty and dedication but hers is

Wells talks about how the battle in Teutoburg Forest has changed the history of Rome and the European nations a whole. In the first part of his book, the author speaks about how the written papers like manuscripts or copies of scripts help the scholar in the Middle ages understand what really happens in the period of that battle. And he also talks about other archeological evidence help scholars to understand what really take place in the battle in the second part of his book. Finally, in the last part of his book, Peter S. Wells tells the reader about the meaning of the Teutourg Forest and the reason why Rome lost its battle to the nomadic tribe. Then from the page 38 and 39, we could know that in Paris, experts discovered a military history book about the battle, and it was written by Lucius Annaeus. Lucius gives many details of the battle in his book. And in page 38, the write mentions that Velleius Paterculus in A.D.30 wrote a book about the history of Teutoburg Forest battle. Besides, a historian called Cassius Dio also wrote about the history of that war. Another writer mentioned by Peter S. Wells is Lucius Annaeus Florus, who seemed to give more real details of how the war happened and how the soldiers from Rome fought against soldiers from German. Tacitus is the last author mentioned by Peter who gives information and ideas of the results of that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Also by size helps sort fragments as well. Small dna moves faster than larger ones do. 1. If each individual has such a small amount of DNA, how do the bands on the gel contain enough DNA to be visible? By restriction enzymes then amplified by polymerase chain reaction to make many to millions of copies of a single fragment. 1. Many genes only have a few possible alleles. For example, humans only have a few eye colors and only four blood types. How can DNA tests definitively identify individuals when many men have brown eyes or type A blood? The way this is done is by VNTR ( variable number tandem repeats) the length varies from person to person and the base pairing also differs as well. Experiment Specific Questions Part 3: Analyzing the Results 1. List the distances traveled (in mm) for the bands in the DNA Ladder in the table below. Remember, smaller fragments travel farther than longer ones, so the top most band will be the 1,000 bp fragments while the bottom most band will be the 50 bp fragments. • 6. The Flowers By Alice Walker Essay Alice Walker shows Myops innocence and subsequent loss thereof through her usage of vivid imagery as well as the small setting and symbolism in The Flowers . Myop s sudden exposure to the harsh reality of racism surrounding her shatters her innocence. The tone of the short story changes abruptly showcasing the main characters shift in how she sees the world. For she is suddenly and violently thrust into a world in which skin color dictates how others in society will treat her. There is a clear switch in tone in The Flowers as Myop is exposed to the world outside her home. The initial tone of the short story is carefree and child like. Though the perspective of the story is third person omniscient initially, it is still evident that we are viewing the story through a child s lens. The young protagonist skips lightly from hen house to pigpen to smokehouse showing that she is happy, excited even, to enjoy the natural setting weaved around her. As Myop explores, it becomes evident that her family s financial situation is less than ideal. Wandering towards the woods, she leaves behind the rusty boards of her family s sharecropper cabin (Walker). Now with little else to weave a setting in the reader s mind one can already picture the scene as well as the time period. Very little is written about the setting outside of the family home and the surrounding woods. This supports the childlike tone of the beginning of the story as a young child would not have experienced the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the stories I Never Had it Made, By Jackie Robinson Warriors Don t Cry By Melba Patillo Beals and The Father of Chinese Aviation. By Rebecca Maskel. Melba Beals, Jackie Robinson, and Feng Ru all experienced life changing events that impacted their lives. If you did not know these people went through danger to break segregation. Melba Beals and Jackie Robinsonbroke the color barrier by playing on a white ball team and going to a white school as blacks. Melba Beals was one of the Little Rock Nine to go to a white school as a black. When Melba and the little rock nine first tried to go in the school segregation mobs had forbidden them to go. As Beals said in the text I saw them about fifty uniformed soldiers of the 101st. This shows that just because they did not make it in the first time they will make it in the second time. Despite all of the time they wasted and still could not get in, they still went back every day until they were led in by soldiers. But the main people who gave support to them are their parents and neighbors and also the ministers of their church. As said in the text I recognized neighbors and even ministers from our church. A Midsummer Night s Dream Research Paper Titania, and Love: A Midsummer Night s Dream Interpretive Essay (Word count: 1000) The concept, and theme of love is thrown around a lot in literature, and Shakespeare s works are no exception. A Midsummer Night s Dream is an exceptional showcase of the mysterious emotion of love, and this essay will be focusing on the theme of love surrounding Titania in particular. In this play, the motivations and subsequent actions of Titania are explored and show how love can change people and their relationships. Titania speaks: Mine ear is much enamored of thy note. // So is mine eye enthrallГЁd to thy shape. // And thy fair virtue s force perforce doth move me // on the first view to say, to swear, I love thee. (65) This quote makes use of imagery. The potion that was put into Titania was a love potion, which made her fall in love with the first person who she lays eyes on when she awakes, who in this case, is Bottom, who has taken the form of an ass. Titania adds: Thou art as wise as thou art beautiful. (65) Which signifies that she either already has, or soon will fall in love with Bottom. This quote is an example of dramatic irony. The next morning, when Titania wakes up, she feels as if she s had a nightmare: My Oberon! What visions have I seen! // Methought I was enamour d of an ass (105). This quote demonstrates both exclamations, and assonance. This quote tells us that the love potion used on Titania was not permanent, because it has obviously worn off the morning after, as shown by her general disgust at the thought of being together with an ... • 12. Tropical Cyclones and Climate Change Tropical cyclones (TCs) are of the most extreme and dangerous weather phenomena on Earth. In the United States, landfalling TCs account for an average of $10 billion damages annually (Pielke et al. 2008). Hurricane Katrina (2005) alone caused $81 billion of damages and took more than 1,800 lives away. In developing countries, TC landfalls can be extremely detrimental. For example, Cyclone Nargis (2008) took more than 130,000 lives in Myanmer (Burma) . Due to the catastrophic nature of TCs, substantial efforts have been devoted to short term predictions of TC track and intensity in an effort to minimize the damages and casualties. At intraseasonal (30 90 day) scale, the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO, Madden and Julian 1972) has substantial impacts upon retional TC activities in multiple basins; Indian Oceans (Hall et al. 2001, Bessafi and Wheeler 2006), western North Pacific (e.g., Liebmann et al. 1994), eastern North Pacific (e.g., Maloney and Hartmann 2000a), and Gulf of Mexico (Maloney and Hartmann 2000b). Association of these modes of variabilities to TC activity has contributed to substantial increase of understanding in long term variation of TC activities in different regions. It is also true that the modulations of seasonal to interannual variations of TC activities by these modes of variability complicate the separation of natural variabilities and climate change signal. Recent studies have identified some emerging trends in regional TC activities. Using observed TC track data, Webster et al. (2005) reported increasing trends in intense (Category 4+ in the Saffir Simpson Hurricane Scale) TCs in all TC basins. North Atlantic TC activity over the past 30 years has particularly attracted strong interest in part due to the availability of more reliable observed TC track data (discussed later in the chapter) and the noted increasing trends both in frequency and intensity. Illness refers to the ways in which the sick person, the members of the family and wider social network perceive, live with, and respond to symptoms and disability. Illness and pain is a subjective experience that varies between each individual person. Alisha Ghosh is my cousin; she is a 22 year old female student, currently in her fourth year at the University of Waterloo. Alisha suffers from sever chronic migraines which hinders and interferes with her daily life. Additionally, Alisha s mother also sufferes from sever chronic migraines. It is evident that Alisha s attitude towards painis highly influenced by her mother. Further more, when Alisha s mother would experience pain from sever migraines she would isolate herself in her room and turn off all the lights as it made her migraines worse. Similarly, whenever Alisha begins to experience migraine pains she isolates herself into her dark room. This illustrates how child rearing practices shape and influence attitudes towards the expectations of pain and how to deal with it. To begin with, Alisha Ghosh is a highly active and hard working student, she is on her university s soccer team and has a part time job at the mall. Two cities that inspired him a lot were Suzhou and Beijing. In Suzhou he saw people who could conquer the world and in Beijing he saw a city that had a standing truly unparalleled among the cities of the World. These descriptions showed the immense greatness that both cities bestowed on guests from abroad and it is something that hasn t changed over the years. Over the years the Chinese gave Suzhou s grandeur this description: Paradise in Heaven, Suzhou and Hangzhou on Earth. For Suzhou the splendor started in the year 514 BC when King Helu of the Wu state decided to build a capital city near Lake Taihu. He tasked the project to his minister, Wu Zixu, who designed the city to ensure environmental harmony. The effects of this can still be seen today as modern day Suzhou is equal parts water and land. Over the years this city has grown to become one of the most storied cities in all of China. Firstly, Suzhou and its inhabitants have had a great impact of war. • 17. The And Incarceration Of The American Prison System The American prison finds its origin in Europe. Like most things American we have adopted and adapted many of our beliefs and customs from our mother land. The punishment of confinement was rare and unheard of in America before Eighteenth century. The English concept of prison and incarceration did not even take root until the late Eighteenth Century (Hirsch, 1992). Now, American s cannot claim that they invented prisons or the concept of confining criminal offenders within facilities that keep them separate from society. However, they can accredit themselves with championing the concept of prisonreformation. Much like its English counterpart the early American prison system, which would one day grow to be an integral part of the expansive American Criminal Justice System, had an ugly and brutal start. Confinement conditions for Prisoners were harsh and unrelenting. Most Facilities designed to house criminal offenders were over populated, under staffed, and lacked necessary resources to support their growing population of inmates (Clear Cole, 2003). However, over the years, America has made many strives to correct the errors of their predecessors. This paper will detail the early American Prison System and its journey through reformation to become the modern Prison system that we know today. Medea gave Jason every part of her and then some. To show his gratitude, Jason decided not only to say that all of those sacrifices were meaningless, but to also go on to steal part of her identity as well. Jason stole Medea s past, present, and future by deciding to leave her. Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) refers to a student s ability to effectively understand and use the more advanced and complex language necessary for success in academic endeavors, sometimes referred to as academic language. Graham Green (1904 1991) was said to be one of the greatest novelists of the twentieth century, writing everything from short stories, autobiographies, to children s books. What I found most interesting about the book was that the whole story is told from the viewpoint of Major Calloway and not from Rollo Martins. This is determined from the beginning of the book that Rollo Martins, a broke writer from London, has been presented as a man who is loyal and believes that friendship is almost like a marriage. Lime won t stop committing penicillin racketeering, so Martins thinks it s up to him to do something to stop it. This fact brings evidence in showing that Martins opinion of humanism must be placed over friendship. He decides to tell Calloway that he will provide assistance to the police to help arrest Lime. By making this decision and the fact that Martins manages to kill Lime, Greene, undoubtedly, wanted to convey that no matter how strong a friendship may be, that it means very little compared to the value of human life. • 26. Auguste Comte s Sociological Approach To The Scientific... Sociology is the study of human social relationships and institutions and the study of social problems. Sociology investigates the social causes and consequences of such things as prejudice and discrimination. Auguste Comte first used the term sociology in 1838 to refer to the scientific study of society. He argued that society needs scientific knowledge based on facts and evidence to solve its problems. Spencer suggested that society will correct its own defects through the natural process of survival of the fittest. Marx claimed that social conflict, especially class conflict, and competition mark all societies. Durkheim stressed the importance of studying social facts or patterns of behavior characteristic of a particular group. He advocated the use of systematic observation to study sociological events, but he also recommended that sociologists avoid considering people s attitudes when explaining society. Weber argued that sociologists must also take into account people s interpretations of events; not just the events themselves. He believed that sociologists must inquire about people s thoughts, feelings, and perceptions regarding their own behaviors. These Sociologists were the main players during the 19th and 20th century, and their prior work led to the development of Sociologyin America. With all of the chances that Daru gives him to escape it can be concluded that he either hopes that the Arab will run away so that he does not have to take him to prison or it could also be a test of the Arab s character. The fact that he does not take any of the chances to escape is proof that the Arab is a respectable man in terms of Daru s standards and maybe that is one of the reasons that he did kill his cousin, as the Arabs whole goal in life may be to be respectable and not a coward by running away, as his cousin did. In the following pages, however, the monster admits to having shown a lack of compassion during the murders of Henry Clerval and Victor s wife, Elizabeth. Even though the monster seems to be mindlessly killing people close to Victor, one can argue that his rampage was based on humanity. Before the murders, the creature simply seeks a female companion from his creator, to be able to, interchange of those sympathies necessary for [its] being (Shelley, 147). While Victor did initially comply, he throws the idea out the window, and as a result, the monster experiences true heartbreak. This heartbreak leads the monster to commit the crimes that it did, inflicting a fairly equal amount of pain upon Frankenstein compared to the suffering inflicted on the monster. For example, Victor promotes the suffering by taking away the companion and creating the creature in a wretched form. Furthermore, the monster is extremely young, so like a child crying over a bump on a table, Frankenstein s creation is overreacting to a situation that he has never encountered before. The Gold Of The Bronze Style In China, bronze was often employed with ritual vessels, and this can be best seen with a comparison between an eleventh century B.C.E. you vessel and a fourth century hu vessel that were standard in this time period. These pieces were in high demand during this period from feudal dignitaries starting during the Shang period. They served the purpose of holding wine for ritual ceremonies. The hu especially acted as a vessel for diluting wine with water. The animal motifs outside of the background also repeat symmetrically, as you circle the you. While the hu vessel was made around seven centuries later, it features similar decorations as the you vessel. The pictorial representations also follow a band structure. Although the majority of the bands are filled with geometric designs, one band repeats second from the top and second from the bottom and it features birds. These birds are less naturalistic than ones featured in the you vessel, but they serve a stylistic purpose. At this time, the hunt is also a characteristic subject of some bronze vessels of the late Zhou period. • 38. The Internationalisation Of Higher Education The internationalisation of Higher Education is a mainstream focus, however a review of the literature highlights issues of concerns to some scholars and researchers. Callan (2006) states that a reading of the literature on the internationalisation, both European and world wide (particularly North America) shows that.... the concept has been understood and applied in a highly variable fashion (Callan,2006, p. 16). Kehm and Teichler (2007) concur, postulating that the internationalisation of HE is fraught with strong political undercurrents embracing transnational and off shore campuses and issues of cultural diversity and quality control (Kehm and Teichler, 2007, p. 261). Careful analysis of the literature would seem to support Knight s view that Internationalisation is changing the world of Higher Educationand globalisation is changing the world of internationalisation (Knight,2004, p.5). Welch (2002) looks at the historical and economic background on globalisation and links this to the phenomenon of internationalisation of higher education. He summarises the works of authors including Sklair, Harvey and Giddens. He looks at the rationales that have been utilised to justify the internationalisation of HE, including Knights taxonomy of political, economic and academic rationales. Cookie is a strong loyal woman and her money and power hungry. She is full of attitude. Everyone loves her. Basically the show is just full of black stereotypes. While this rebuilding occurred, the English split into two distinctive groups known as The Chesapeake and New England. In documents from both colonies, set in the 1600 s, we will examine how the same group of people can have completely different social characteristics, economics, and religion. • 46. Definition Of Poverty There are a number of definitions of poverty. It is a multifaceted notion which includes social, economic, and political components. How we define poverty is critical to politics, policy and academic debates about the concept. It is bound up with explanations and has implications for solutions. (Lister, 2004 as cited in Class notes, 2017). The United Nations, first established in 1945 shortly after the second world war, was created to promote international co operation and maintain international order (UN, 2017). The global term for povertyis defined by using the Gross National Product (GNP) and Gross Domestic Product(GDP). Both defined by the World Bank, GNP uses market valuations to measure national income: GNP per capita (each person) gives an indication of the typical material living standards of a nation, whereas, GDP is a measure of the total market value of goods and services output and their economic activity. The United Nations set the bar at the minimum daily income of $1.25 (93 pence) per day (Class notes, 2017). If you are living on less than this you are classed as living in absolute poverty. How poverty is measured is a contested concept and has had researchers long trying to establish a fixed method of determining. The four main concepts are absolute poverty, relative poverty and deprivation, consensual poverty, and social exclusion (Class notes, 2017). This image is itself, an indication that the film intends to deal with a clash of ages or civilizations within the context of American history. The train station and train are symbols for the conquering of the West and the industrialization of America. In other words, the film expresses important ideas about the age old theme of progress versus tradition, as well as society versus the individual. The central question of the film is whether or not the kind of frontier justice of the West, which was built on gun fighting and local law enforcement, was adaptable to the modern age. The character of Ransom Ranse Stoddard (James Stewart) symbolizes the transition of American society by earning his fame as a politician. The true frontiersman, Tom Doniphon (John Wayne), suffers a drastically different fate. Despite being the man who actually shot Liberty Valance, Doniphon remains unknown to fame. This is Ford s way of communicating to the audience that those who are in power in our society are often in power through no power of their own. Also that the true spirit of America resides in the common man, rather than in the man who is celebrated and attains social power and influence. Given these facts, the film can be seen as a cautionary tale considering the present day homogenization of culture. With an increase in social conformity comes a decrease in personal morality.
