Cocktail Parties In The 1950 s
On any given evening during the quintessential 1950s, shakers and movers of a very unsquare world
could be found gathered at cocktail parties in sleek suburbia homes, ultra swank bachelor s pads, or
mirrored lounge/living combos in Anywhere, USA . While the libations flowed, those edgy revelers
were trying out their well rehearsed and choreographed, goo goo eyed social moves on one another,
intent on making an impression. Other party goers were working the room, culling for a new client or
perhaps clinching a huge business deal the company execs had awaited for months. The way out vibes
of a 1950s cocktail party... Imagine if you will, the sultry lounge music of Stan Kenton, George
Shearing, Nat King Cole or Frank Sinatra that emanated

Abby And Estelle Over Pigments In The Multicolored Coleus...
The argument in the scenario was being made between Abby and Estelle over the pigments in the
multicolored coleus plants. Abby was certain that the green section contained chlorophyll, whereas,
Estelle claimed that both the green and purple parts of the coleus plants consisted of chlorophyll. A
paper chromatography test was conducted to clearly separate the mixture of the pigments in which the
mixture was dropped onto a slip of paper and the end was then placed into a solvent.
After analyzing both the green and purple sections of the leaves, our data affirmed Estelle s statement
who claimed that chlorophyll existed in the green and purple part of the coleus plant. However, we
noticed that the pigment is more prominent in the green section

Modem Profession
An occupation does not become a profession merely because its members decide it will be one.
Modem professions share much in common with classical professions. The Hallmarks that have come
to characterize a profession are based on a midevel models: a guild, high level of education, public
recognition, and a specialized body of knowledge.
Emanating from the existential needs of society and the professions are established and maintained by
the mutual interactions of society and professions, both collectively and individually. Therefore,
professional ethics can be seen as the explicit understanding of the relationship between the profession
and society. The making of the model, the covenant is one of the oldest and most enduring ways in

Ivanovich Mendeleyev Personality
Dimitri Ivanovich Mendeleyev (1834 1907) was a Russian alchemist born in Tobolsk, a town in the
western part of Siberia. He is well known for the greatest contribution he did to biology and chemistry
with the identification of elements properties and the creation of the periodic table, as well as the deep
study of catalysts, solutions and crude oil. He wrote the many creations he did in his books and works,
like The principles of Chemistry.
Despite the brilliant person he was, his childhood wasn t easy. He was the youngest of more than
twelve children, which caused his family to cope with many crises and hunger for years. But the worst
came later, when Mendeleyev s father was working and suddenly became blind, so his mother had to
take the money home instead of him. She had luck and became the manager of a glass factory.
However, this didn t last too long, due a fire in the factory that burned it down. At this time, none of
the parents worked, so the family faced poverty. Nevertheless, Mendeleyev s mother knew how bright
he was, so she travelled a great distance with Mendeleyev to get to a school in St. Petersburg in spite
of all the money shortages they had. Unfortunately, some days later she died of tuberculosis and

Essay about Poor Law
1. Explain why the New Poor Law Amendment Act (1834) was so controversial.
There were many arguments raised about the poor law amendment act of 1834, this Act was thought
to be the most contentious piece of legislation passed during the era of the Whig s. At the time, it was
a lot about saving money, the upper class did not want to pay towards the poor law, as they believed
they were lazy and unworthy. The taxpayers, and ratepayers believed it to be wrong they should be
paying to help the poor. The workhouse system was one of the most inhumane of all time, humiliating
and demeaning all the poor people that entered it. When families entered the workhouse, the husband,
wife, and children would be separated from each other, allowing ... Show more content on

Some individuals wanted reform for the use of child labour, trying to get less working hours with an
age limit. Seebohm Rowntree, and Charles Booth also called for reform for these poor people, as they
were appalled at the atrocious working conditions of these factories, mills, and mines. The individuals,
and groups, who fought for these reforms, worked endlessly for many years to achieve a safe
environment for these poor people. The owners of these factories and mills had to realise, they could
still make a profit, without jeopardizing the lives of the workers through their neglect. Politicians also
knew they had to have reform in the factories, with Germany having a much healthier workforce and
better working conditions, their production was much higher than ours. They needed educated, healthy
workers to get the same standard of work Germany was producing. The first effective, piece of factory
legislation was the Factory Act of 1833. These applied to all textile mills, except those making silk
and lace;
· No child under nine could be employed.
· Children from nine to thirteen were limited to an eight hour day, and were to receive at least two
hours of education a day.

The Decision That Should Matter But Don t

WAII the Decision that should matter but don t The modern era, politically, has been defined by the
right of everyone s own decision, for who s in power, what they do in power and how to stop them if
they get too powerful. It was the individual s decision to let one into power. Of course if a country did
not do this, we as Americans would see that as backwards and not right to the point of military
intervention when in our own nation we do not get full say in who become president. The decision
making does not include world leaders but also includes the day to day decisions and our own life
decisions we make every day, such as our job decisions. But it would seem that all these decisions are

He describes how the western philosophy has described how to make a better world by just simply
giving the individuals more choice in the world. Schwartz then later in the lecture goes on to explain
how this ever growing amount of choice can lead to a paralysis of choice. According to Schwartz this
paralysis is being exemplified by the amount of choices given to them. This has led to an opposite
effect where instead of giving more choices equals a better life, now more choices means no choices at
all leading to no choice at all. Schwartz gives another example of cellphones doing Ludacris things
such as nose trimming, toothbrush and even a lighter. Here exemplifies how the growing number of
choices has led to the elderly simply not getting cell phones or televisions because they cannot
understand how to use the call feature or how to change the channel of the television. The vast amount
of choices has also lead to the agency of our choices to decease as well. With so many options our
decisions rely totally on us according to Schwartz, that if our choice in anything is so much as not
perfect, then our decision was a bad decision and one could have made a better decision. Which leads
to a loss in agency in oneself as well as

The Effects on theThe Use of Water for the Production of...
Water, over half the planet is covered in this miraculous molecular compound. Water provides us with
necessary hydration for our bodies, gives us means to grow crops and raise animals, it acts as a
highway for boats and barges, and through water, humanity has thrived. The recipe for water is a
relatively simple one, all you need is to combine one part oxygen and two part hydrogen and suddenly
you have the key to life on earth. Water is arguably the most valuable resource that exists on planet
earth and yet, it is quickly slipping out of our reach. Water covers over seventy percent of earth s
surface, but only about three percent of that water is available for human use as freshwater. The main
source of freshwater is permanent ice sheets, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ethanol made its debut in the early 1970s, and by the late 1980s, ethanol was beginning to be used for
fueling cars (Fuel testers, 2012). Now in the midst of the green movement of the 2000s, ethanol can be
found in over 90 percent of gasoline at public gas stations (Fuel testers, 2012). This technology is
being pushed to new extremes as it strives toward its goal of replacing gasoline as our main fuel
source. Ethanol promises us less gas emissions, less dependence on foreign oil, and prolonged use of a
healthier environment. This happy picture ethanol has painted, however, might be too good to be true.
As the demand for ethanol rises, the demand for corn grown by American farmers also rises. As the
demand for corn rises, the water necessary to irrigate those crops also rises. As water use rises, our
water supply diminishes. At first glance, ethanol as a new fuel supply appeared to be the answer to all
of our problems, but now Americans need to reconsider this corn grown miracle. First and foremost,
the water to ethanol payoff is shockingly low. Fully irrigated, corn takes up to 1,200 gallons of water
to produce one gallon of ethanol (Bio Energy, 2013). To create a little over two gallons of ethanol,
farmers need to grow one bushel of corn, which consumes over 3,172 gallons of water (Bio Energy,
2013). This ratio has become a burden on watersheds, which are being drained at a record rate to
irrigate when rain is little

Physiological Perception Filters
When a person glimpses the face of a famous actor, sniffs a favourite food or hears the voice of a
friend, recognition is instant. Within a fraction of a second after the eyes, nose, ears, tongue or skin is
stimulated, one knows the object is familiar and whether it is desirable or dangerous. How does such
recognition, which psychologists call preattentive perception, happen so accurately and quickly, even
when the stimuli are complex and the context in which they arise varies?
Much is known about the way the cerebral cortex, the outer rind of the brain, initially analyses sensory
messages. Yet investigations are only now beginning to suggest how the brain moves beyond the mere

PHASE PORTRAITS made from electroencephalograms (EEGs)
generated by a computer model of the brain reflect the overall activity of
the olfactory system at rest (above) and during perception of a familiar
scent (right). Resemblance of the portraits to irregularly shaped, but still
structured, coils of wire reveals that brain activity in both conditions is
chaotic: complex but having some underlying order. The more circular
shape of the right hand image, together with its greater segregation of
colour, indicates that olfactory EEGs are more ordered more nearly
periodic during perception than during rest.
Also, how does the brain achieve what is called generalization over equivalent receptors? Because of
turbulence in nasal airflow, only a few of the many receptors that are sensitive to an odorant are
excited during a sniff, and the selection varies unpredictably from one sniff to the next. How does the
brain recognize that signals from different collections of receptors all refer to the same stimulus? Our
investigations begin to suggest answers to both problems.
Many of our insights were derived from intensive studies of the olfactory bulb. Those experiments
show clearly that every neuron in the bulb participates in generating each olfactory perception. In
other words, the salient information about the stimulus is carried in some

How Does Shakespeare Use Racial Prejudice In Othello
More than Jealousy and Love: Othello
While reading any literary work, there are lots of conceptions that you have to consider, even if the
genre of it is romantic or comedy, it might have all kinds of hidden things. You have to have an open
mind to see all that. Reading can be an opening for the mind to see how people used to live and how
they are living now. Othello one of the most interesting plays that talk about very important issues,
like love of course, racial prejudice, and being an outsider.
Reading Shakespeare s plays give us the right to see how things were going on in the past. Through
his plays we see the comedy side and how that was; also we see love, hate, jealousy and tragedy.

The Importance Of A Career Assessment Test
I graduated from college and now what? There is nothing more stressful and frustrating than
completing school and not knowing what to do next. Often, college graduates find themselves in a
predicament where they are dissatisfied with their current job in their field of study and do not know
what to do. A career assessment test can serve as a guide for those in need of a career path, direction or
suggestion. The purpose of a career assessment test is to suggest careers one might be well suited for.
There are different assessment tools available online; some are available for a fee, while some are free.
I was reluctant at first to take the tests because I do not believe a test can tell me what career or job I
am well suited for. Furthermore, the assessments are extremely opinionated. The results are based on
information you provide. We may think we are soft and sensitive, but that may necessarily be the case.
When taking a career assessment test administered by careercolleges.com, I came across the following
question: When making decisions do you try to remain objective and consider the facts or do you
allow your feelings and the effect of the decision of others to influence your decision? I always
thought I was a very objective, fact based person, so my answer would simply be I remain objective .

1984 Nazi Regime Essay
1984 and the Nazi Regime George Orwell, in his dystopian novel 1984 written shortly after World
War II, creates an allusion between Nazi Germany s past and Oceania s future in regards to the attitude
and structure of the two societies. The novel is told by an omniscient narrator following Winston, a
man questioning his memory and the morality of Big Brother s government, which is most effective
for this novel. Thus, through Winston s internal dialogue, Orwell alludes to Nazi Germany s past to
predict Oceania s future in order to create a parallel between the structure and attitudes of the two
nations, which communicates his theme (and warns his readers) that certain trends in government will
lead to violation of individual rights, and therefore ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The society is divided into three classes: the proles (working class, comparable to early treatment of
the Jews), the outer party (educated members given administrative jobs, or Nazi soldiers), and the
inner party (those in power, Hitler and his cohorts). Both the inner and outer party looked down on the
proles and paid them no mind with the idea that the proletariats were inferior. Additionally, members
of the inner and outer parties shared the same characteristics as those in power of the Nazi regime: tall
muscular youths and deep bosomed maidens, blond haired, vital, sunburnt, carefree (60). In addition
to the similarities in structure, Oceania also destroyed all books created before Big Brother gained
power. Therefore, the structure of Oceania is a direct parallel to Nazi Germany and conveys Orwell s
message that an initial breach of individual liberties will continue until all originality is destroyed.
However, Oceania had slight variations from its predecessor. One example of this is the absence of
labor camps orchestrated to contain the proles. Instead, the proles and the parties intermingled at the

Essay On Man s Search For Meaning
A prominent quote in the bible comes from John 8:13 and states, The truth will set you free .
According to this, knowing the truth will free one from the prison of falsehood, and yet the truth is
often accompanied by some form of suffering. Knowing the truth will free someone from the lie they
are living, but it may not be a life they wish to be freed from. In difficult situations, people often rely
on illusion and live in denial as a way to survive, due to the truth being too difficult to accept. In order
to find meaning in one s life while suffering or experiencing a difficult situation, meaning is often
found in illusions and false hoods, rather than in reality. Within Man s Search for Meaning by Viktor

Illusion, it seemed, was the best remedy to survive the horrors of the camps. Frankl used this illusion
to ignore the reality of what he was suffering from in order to find meaning and be able to survive. If
one were to fixate on the horrors of the reality he was living, he would be unable to see a future
outside the camp and therefore a reason to live, ultimately resulting in his demise.
The idea of using illusion to escape the horrors of reality is depicted by Cypher in The Matrix. Cypher
had been awoken by Morpheus and reborn into the real world outside the Matrix. In the movie Cypher

The Legacy Of Isaac Monroe Cline
Isaac Monroe Cline was one of the era s new scientists who believed he knew everything there was to
be known about the motions of clouds and the behavior of storms. Isaac was the chief of the United

Galveston baffled him. As rain started to fall in the city with a higher intensity than normal, people
were reassured by Isaac s beliefs. He was completely wrong.
Galveston which is located on Galveston Island is a twenty nine mile strip of land estimated about two

How Did Shinto Influence Japanese Culture
Shinto, an ethnic, ritualistic religion of Japan, has proved somewhat adaptable to social change and
significantly more adaptable to political change within the nation since its initial emergence, with
origins which trace back to 300BC . While experts argue that Shinto has been extremely influential in
shaping Japanese culture and identity, its popularity has been diminishing since the religion was
imposed by the State in Japan s pre World War II, evoking a surge of nationalism. In today s society,
the religion has made conscious efforts to regain popularity, however has not been able to wholly

Emperor Meiji, legend tells, wrote in Japan s 1889 Constitution that Emperor Jimmu Tenno (660BC)
was a direct descendant of Amaterasu. The position of emperor before this however, was principally
ceremonial, and the emperor typically lived in imprisonment until the Meiji restoration period (1868
1912). Instead, Japan was predominantly led by feudal noblemen, rather than the figure head. By
World War II, however, the Emperor was widely believed to be divine, and worshipped as a god,
partially as a result of Japanese radical right ultra nationalism . This was an ideology which
propagated, and spread to mainstream Japan by the 1930 s, after being introduced during the Meiji
period, through mass military conscription, industrialization, and subtle propaganda promoting Japan
as a family state , done so in an effort to ...to solidify the emperor system against the increasing power
of Western liberal thought. Emperor Hirohito, Japan s 124th emperor, was the face of this movement.
After aligning themselves to Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy as a result of the 1940 Tripartite Act,
Japan attacked the United States in 1941 in Pearl Harbour. Once the war began, the patriotic Japanese
public were lied to about great victories which had not happened in an attempt to maintain morale and
support. Following U.S occupation in 1945, Emperor Hirohito was forced to renounce his divinity to
the nation in 1946. This was followed by a reform of the Japanese Constitution, which came into
effect in May 1947. New nation wide liberties were introduced, such as a freedom of religion were

How Religious Figures Are Depicted
How Religious Figures are Depicted in Films
Religion often plays an important role in Hollywood films, but do Hollywood films play an important
role in religion? Perhaps the better question is, Does film play an important role in the way people
understand religious concepts?
Although the best reasons for going to the movies are to be entertained and eat popcorn, understanding
a film is actually quite complex. Movies are not only a reflection of life, they also have the capability
of shaping our norms, values, attitudes, and perception of life. Through the media of film, one can find
stories of practically anything imaginable and some things unimaginable. Movie makers use their art
to entertain, to promote political agendas, to educate, and to present life as it is, was, or could be. They
can present truth, truth as they interpret it, or simply ignore truth altogether. A movie can be a work of
fiction, non fiction, or anything in between. A film is an artist s interpretation. What one takes away
from a film depends upon how one interprets what has been seen and heard. Understanding film is
indeed difficult.
Understanding religion is also complex. In American society, Christianity is the largest religion;
however, there are vast differences among Christians, as to what one is to believe and how one s
beliefs are to be put into practice. It s the mixture of beliefs and practices of other religions and the
absence of any religious belief. America is indeed a melting pot when

The Defamation Of Women In The Medieval Era
Defamation of women during the medieval period stemmed from Christian ideology that claimed
women were mentally weaker and therefore more susceptible to temptations of the flesh. This
assumption often resulted in women being portrayed as overly sexual beings that aggressively sought
to physically soil a man s goodness. As painted in Bibliothèque De L Arsenal, the woman is shown as
a contentious predator that clings to the man s clothes urging him to sleep with her. It can be noted that
he is half dressed, quite clearly uncomfortable and attempting to make an escape while she, fully
naked, tugs at the bottom of his shirt to come towards the bed. In the piece she is aggressive in her
lust, painting her as inherently sinful.
Yet another common theme that characterized female integrity can be found in the penis trees drawn
throughout the era. In Massa Marittima s Mural, the implication that women harvested penises and
were more interested in the physical aspects of a man rather than the Christian influenced concepts of
celibacy and purity were openly accepted. Pictures like these were not created by women or based on
any concrete experience, instead they repeatedly drew inspiration from perpetuated stereotypes that
further discredited the morality of women.
These stereotypes were not only found in paintings but in literature as well. In Jean de Meun s popular
tale, Romance of the Rose, an older woman speaks on her advice for younger women. In this advice,
we can see the

Our Needs And Wants Essay
Our Needs and Wants: effects on our inner peace
Life, in general, has not changed over the years; it is only the surroundings and circumstances that
have changed. The way we choose to react to those changes, determines the direct effect on the quality
of our life. We need to focus on the need of distinguishing, between the ever increasing
responsibilities on our shoulders and other insignificant matters that consume our precious time.
Our needs and wants are two distinct entities. We need to separate our needs from our wants in order
to achieve satisfaction. It is definitely not a simple matter. The dilemma is that we all want everything,
but we don t need everything we want. When we can quiet the unnecessary, we can give an

We need to find an opportunity to coach somewhere, in fact anywhere. Find a young person, a young
team, jump in and impart training, like we would if we were coaching at the highest level. Such
initiative and experience, will give us sufficient boost to reach our goals, and actually become a sport
coach one day.
We should not be afraid to take small steps. There s something powerful about momentum...no matter
how little. Many times, the impossible is simply the untried. When we are immobilised with fear,
when each task ahead appears to be a huge one, when we are unable to lift ourselves to face it at those
moments we can break the dilemma by using two simple words: Do something! By taking some small
steps, the required momentum will begin to come into our life.
Most people don t succeed because they are too afraid to even try. As incredible as it sounds, they
decide in advance that they are going to fail. Many times, our final goal seems so distant unachievable
that we don t even make an effort. But, once we have made our decision and actually start, it s like we

The Effects Of Energy Subsidies On The Consumer, The...
Abstract Subsidies are one of the most powerful policy tools in the hands of the government. They
have been used for decades to achieve a range of economic, social and environmental objectives.
Indeed, one of the most important and challenging responsibilities of a government is allocating
financial resources to achieve public good. This paper analyses the effects of energy subsidies on the
consumer, the economy and the energy industry. Energy subsidies are any government actions that
support the cost of energy production in terms of reduction in prices paid by consumers and increase
in revenues to energy producers (World Bank, 2010). These investments aim to improve energy access
by making prices more affordable, shielding domestic consumers from international price volatility
and supporting energy intensive industries (The International Institute for sustainable development,
2012). In practice, energy subsidies come in different forms. (The IEA, 2002) and (UNEP, 2008)
identify the following typical mechanisms by which governments support the production and
consumption of energy: Direct financial transfers: grants to consumers, grants to producers, low
interest or preferential loans and government loan guarantees; Preferential tax treatment: tax credits,
tax rebates, exemptions on royalties, duties or tariffs, reduced tax rates, deferred tax liabilities and
accelerated depreciation on energy supply equipment; Trade restrictions: tariffs, tariff rate import
quotas

The Accuracy Of The Film Red Tails
Some more accurate than others, they all concern the similar themes of a mission above others, a
personal conflict, and the character development to become iconic by the end of the film. For
example, in Red Tails, its accuracy can be somewhat, when concerning itself to the controversy of
black males in the American Air Force. Surprisingly, the directors of the movie did get the accuracy of
the aircraft they acquired throughout the duration of the movie. It pinpointed the racial tension
between troops, but also showed the desegregation that occurred after the two racial groups started
journeying in more missions. Its inaccuracy comes in the fact that not that many main characters die

The Dark Skies Were Filled With Soil And Dust That Rained
The dark skies were filled with soil and dust that rained down on the American Midwest. These
powerful black blizzards would label this period of time as the Dirty Thirties or Dust Bowl. At the
beginning of the 1930s, the Great Plains farmers were the most successful in the nation. As one of the
worst man made disasters the widespread farming used harsh farming techniques that exposed the
topsoil. Then a series of devastating dust storms hit the southern Great Plains of the United States
between 1932 and 1939, damaging the ecology and agriculture structures. The Dust Bowl of the 1930

Animals died with their stomachs filled of dirt, their eyes cemented shut when their tears mixed with
dust or suffocated. Farming production completely stopped for a decade forcing many families to
leave the region.
The economic repercussions lead to many farmers losing their homes and farms, which resulted in the
largest resettlement in US history. Farmers failed to pay their mortgages and many lost their homes to
bank foreclosures. Some families just packed up all their belongings and left. As their livelihoods
disappeared, more than 350,000 people fled the Great Plains during the 1930s (Dust Bowl). The mass
migration destroyed many rural communities as 2000,000 headed west to California. Ann Marie Low
stated, Now another prolonged drouth has struck at a time the whole country is suffering a severe
depression. Men like Dad and the Holmes brothers, who have been here a long time, who have plenty
of land and no mortgages, have a chance to hang on until better times come again (Dust Bowl 1931

These Dust Bowl refugees replaced Mexicans as the cheep labor source in the California fields and

The Tragedy Of A Tragic Hero
FORMS
Tragedy. The protagonist (hero or heroine) is overcome in the conflict and meets a tragic end. The
tone is serious and build in the audience a fatalistic sense of the inevitability of the outcome and, as a
result, is sometimes frightening. Yet the inescapable aspects of the catastrophe serve as a catharsis that
somehow inexplicably purges the viewer of pity and fear. The significance, then, is not that the
protagonist meets with an inevitable catastrophe, but rather the degree to which he or she deals with
the conflict and the tragedy with dignity, courage, and honor.

They would also be responsible for using their expertise to create technical bulletins and education for

Main components of ECM are, glycoproteins, proteins bonded with cars
The most abundant glycoprotein is collagen, which forms strong fibers outside the cell
ECM many attach to the cell through other glycoproteins that then bind to membrane proteins called
integrins

Hitler s Use Of Prehistory Analysis
In the broadest sense, members of the National Socialist/Nazi party were using archaeology to trace
the earliest Germanic culture in an attempt to create a place of origin for the Germanic people.
However, this later was aimed at using archaeological finds as propaganda and justification for actions
taken by the Nazi party. For example, at the start of the war, finds made in Poland were used as an
excuse for German occupation under the grounds that it was once German land. Ironically, Hitler was
not one of the main supporters of prehistory and archaeology owing to the fact that he saw it as a way
to show Germany being inferior and a primitive culture. In his attempt to create a more advanced
impressive history of the German people, Hitler was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Arguably one of the most iconic examples of the representation of Arian ideology is the Nazi
swastika. Even prior to its adoption by Hitler, the Swastika was interpreted to represent the concept of
the Arian race. As far back as 1880 Michal von Zmigrodski Ludvig Müller claimed the Swastika to be
of Indo European origin. He theorized that it represented the ancient Arian sun god. Taking this
concept further, he stated that the swastika originated in the German homeland, linking Germany with
the home of the supposed Aryan race. (Mees, 2008: 57 58) Thus, when a Swastika like symbol was
discovered in other areas of the world such as during excavations at the Greek city of Troy, the Aryan
identity of the swastika was once again used to propagate the spread of German influence. (Mees,
2008: 59) This led to individuals such as Hitler making claims that the German/Aryan race had claim
to these areas, having once been the land of their ancestors. By the time the Swastika was adopted by
the Nazi party, it had come to represent a purely Arian symbol. This ideology all stemmed from the
study of prehistory, leading to the resulting excavations in which the SS Ahnenerbe sought to
create/find evidence in support of the theorized Nordic pagan solar worship. With these findings now
representing the Arian/Nordic race, and by association the German people, any area that produced

Essay on Failure of the Schlieffen Plan
Failure of the Schlieffen Plan
The aim of the plan was to avoid having to fight two was at the same time (France and Russia). The
plan was devised by Alfred Von Schlieffen. His plan was to attack France, not on the main border,
which was strongly fortified, but to attack through Belgium and circle the Paris by going to the west of
it, not east. He predicted this should take 6 weeks leaving enough time to go to the eastern front at
Russia and fight there. The plan was very precise and accurate but when it was put into action there
were changes, which led to the Germans failing to capture France.
The first change was made by Moltke (Schlieffen s successor). He decided that they would not ...

The Belgians also stopped supplies and reinforcements, and destroyed their railways.
One of the great ideas about the Schlieffen Plan was that the army invading France was so large and
strong. However, when Russia recovered unexpectedly in 10 days (not six weeks as the Germans
expected) the German leaders worried and many troops were transported to the Eastern front,
weakening the blow to France. By now they were very behind schedule.
The consequences were bad for the Germans. France was sending troops to the frontier at the North
and even more importantly, Britain had joined the war. They had promised to protect Belgium
(because they were worried about being attacked on their coast) and also they did not want Germany
to dominate Europe. Britain sent the BEF (British Expeditionary Force) under Sir John French. The
army of 100,000 soldiers arrived in Belgium on the 17th August. The Germans, who had hoped the
British would not join, were now forced to fight them at the Battle of Mons. The British retreated to
the French armies.
The German Armies were now moving south. The right wing was moving towards the west of Parris.
However, Von Kluck was worried about the spread out nature of the German armies. Also the Belgian
delays meant that the armies were tired and supplies were stretched. Therefore, he decided to go east
of Parris. This violated Schlieffen s

For the average guitarist on a budget, or for those who are looking to get into learning how to play,
there are few instruments better than the Ibanez line. One specific example of this is the Ibanez
RG2EX1. Let s look a little deeper to see just what it has to offer. Features: The body of the RG2EX1
is made of basswood, a common feature for lower end guitars. Though the price of the wood in high
quantities is relatively cheap, they generally make instruments with good resonance and sound quality.
There are two modern, sleek looking finishes available with the Ibanez RG2EX1, including jet black
and royal blue. The neck is bolted on the guitar, and made of three separate pieces of maple wood. The

The bridge of the guitar, in an effort to keep price down, is fixed instead of tremolo. This takes away
your ability to do dive bombs or some other popular hard rock maneuvers, but it effectively keeps the
strings in position and tune. All of the hardware, including the tuning heads, bridge, and selector

Paul Conroy Cinematography
In film, cinematography, or the making of a motion picture film, is a major key to creating the right
movie. It has a major influence on the audience s experience while watching the film, from making the
audience feel certain emotions to changing the whole genre of a film. Cinematography has many
different effects on the feel of a movie, in which it can make or break it. During Buried, a film
directed by Rodrigo Cortes, the audience witnesses many scenes in which the main character has lost
hope or given up on trying to get out of the horrible situation he is in. Buried uses different types of
cinematography like close ups, overhead shots, and longshots to evoke a sense of lost hope.
In one scene the audience sees that Paul Conroy, our main character, begins to make progress when he
goes through a phone that was left in the box with him. He calls one of the numbers thinking that it
could connect him to people that may help him. During Paul s conversation with his captures the

far from the outside world that no one will ever find him. In a film with one man based in one setting,
the many different uses of the camera keeps the audience involved and thinking about what the main

The Modern Era Of Hypnosis And Hypnotherapy
The modern era of hypnosis and hypnotherapy began with Franz Anton Mesmer, the Viennese
physician. Mesmer favored an altogether gentler approach, and his devotion to his patients was quite
extraordinary. His breakthrough case was that of Franzl Oesterline, a 27 year old woman suffering
from what Mesmer described as a convulsive malady, the most troublesome symptoms of which was
that the blood rushed to her head and there set up the most cruel toothaches and earaches, followed by
delirium, rage, vomiting and swooning . These symptoms were so severe that Fraulein Oesterline
moved into Mesmer s house to receive round the clock care. Returning to the theories of his student
days, Mesmer introduced a cure by using a magnet to disrupt the gravitational tides adversely
affecting his patient. He successfully induced in Fraulein Oesterline the sensation of a fluid draining
rapidly from her body, taking her illness with it. Her recovery after that was complete and virtually
instantaneous (Kirsch et.al., 1995). From a modern perspective, we can see that the results were
produced by the hypnotic suggestion of a fluid draining from the body, a wonderful healing metaphor
that wouldn t be out of place in a 21st century hypnotherapy practice. Even Mesmer realized that the
magnet had nothing to do with the cure. His system rested on the belief that illness was caused by
depleted levels of animal magnetism, and that these could be replenished by the healer transmitting

The Hidden Curriculum In Education

Hidden Curriculum essay
This essay will explain what the Hidden Curriculum is and its implications on issues in the South
African system. The essay will also reflect my understanding of the concept hidden curriculum. I will
also explain the different levels in the educational system. The second section of the essay I will focus
on what I have identified as the hidden curriculum during my teaching practice experience. In my
conclusion I will address the hidden curriculum in order to redress the concern I have identified.
The hidden curriculum is lessons that we as educators teach informally or unintentionally at school.
Learners will learn unintended values, beliefs, behaviours and norms in the classroom and the social
learning environment (Department of Educational Studies, 2015). They may learn how to interact with
other learners for example debates and class discussions and group work. Hidden curriculum will
initially begin at a young age for learners. In primary school they will be taught how to greet an
educator and to say please and thank you (Department of Educational Studies, 2015). We can basically

responsibility to the schools and educators. Educators had to teach the learners to greet and respect
other learners. The principal also made use of the hidden curriculum by telling educators to see that
the learners are in class during periods and to speak to learners that are a problem. Another example
that I saw during my teaching experience was that if learners got good grades and turn in their
homework on time or even listen to the educator during the class they were rewarded. By doing this
the educator taught the learners how to behave as well as to take pride in their

Iran and Modernity
All states within the international system have to bow to the inevitable and embrace its inherent
dynamic force that determines the structure of their governance. Thus, no society within the
international arena can stay in voluntary solitary confinement and ward itself off modernity. Berman
defines modernism as any attempt by modern men and women to become subjects as well as objects
of modernisation, to get a grip on the modern world and make themselves at home in it
(Berman_1988_p. 5), which becomes increasingly troubled especially in relation to modernising the
societal system of the Muslim countries. One of the most salient examples demonstrating a feasible

And in Article 2, the repugnancy clause is enshrined so that no laws can be contrary to the religion of
Islam and its interpretation in the Shia faith (Video_5.3_36:18). Successful incorporation of Islamic
principles into the Constitution embodies the principles of religious reformism explicitly underpinning
the profound formative role of Islam defining the legal identity of the country. Indeed, Iranian history
offers other quintessential examples of modernisation attempts invoking the spirit of emulation. Reza
Shah follows the trend of social modernisation while striving to further reshape the structure of Iranian
society by implementing a multitude of reforms including education health, transport or industrial
sectors. Despite their relative success, Shah s enforcement of western dress code encounters stiff
resistance of citizens again supported by the clergy. If adopting slightly simplistic approach, it was his
son backed by the Western powers, who leaves the most distinctive bad taste in the Iranians mouth

Artificial Reefs Used as Fisheries
The main objective of our study is to determine if artificial reefs can be used as a fisheries
enhancement or conservation tool in Narragansett Bay. Using a variety of research techniques, we will
attempt to answer the following questions: (1) do artificial reefs increase the abundance (and biomass)
of important species of demersal sport fish? Or (2) do reefs attract existing numbers of fish to the reef
and increase the rate of exploitation, thus potentially decreasing localized populations (or
communities)? By building a carefully replicated network of artificial reefs, we will advance research
on the impact of artificial reefs. In order to address our study questions, we propose the construction
of 0.25 acre artificial reefs (0.5 acre area) using pre fabricated reef modules in three locations of
Narragansett Bay. The creation of small scale experimental reefs will not only provide long term
research stations but will also improve benthic habitat conditions in an area of soft sediments.
The performance of artificial reefs varies considerably, depending on materials used as well as
location of deployment and intended results. Breakup, movement, and burial have been reported to

Investing Inside A Qualified Retirement Plan
There was a time not so long ago that investing was simple Stocks, bonds and mutual funds, notes,
and annuities that was it. Today, investors enjoy access to the same types as investments as in times
past with Real estate, Real Estate Investment Trust s (REIT s), Derivatives, Hedge funds, Currencies
and so many more thrown into the mix. Here we will consider Real estate investing, the different types
of real estate to consider and why one serves the investor over another as it relates to investing inside a
qualified retirement plan. Unlike so many other investments, real estate is unique because it can be
leveraged. Banks will lend upwards to 60% percent of the properties value with non recourse funds
inside retirement plans. Only plans that have a certain income through annual contributions or large
cash flows from wholly owned properties should leverage, especially on commercial or industrial
assets. Generally, there are 3 types of investments: Land, Commercial/Industrial and Residential. Land
is a complex investment that requires a certain level of expertise, which many investors do not
possess, but can provide explosive returns. Investing in land can require years of negative cash flows
before any appreciable gain is realized. As land is considered, two important rules of land investing
comes to mind: 1) The profit made in virtually any land deal is made the day of purchase, which is to
say always buy lower than market; 2) For everyday a land asset is held in

Advantage Of Home Field Advantage
There are advantages to playing at home outside of during the game like no traveling, sleeping in your
own bed, and home cooked meals (Voyer, 2015). Other researchers implied that another possible
influence for the home team is officiating bias (Wright and House 1984). In Baumeister and
Steinhilber s study, a supportive audience increased the home team s general motivation during the
game (Baumeister and Steinhilber 1984). Previous research suggested humans are alike animals in a
way that both are more confident, more powerful, and have less stress in their own territory than the
opponent s territory (Ardrey, 1966; Lea 1984; Brown 1987; Forsyth, 1990). According to study done
by Jon Bois for SB nation, teams would have a significant amount ... Show more content on

The study looked at home wins and away wins for the regular season. The experimenter s study
differed from previous experiment because of how the experimenters from previous studies only
looked at data for how many wins a team had at home and away. An example of a study is how
Baumeister and Steinhilber s, who looked at only the effect of a home game in the playoffs. Another
example is how Jon Bois s study calculated only how many more games a team would win if they
only played at home. Jon Bois did not look at how many points a team would score. The study also
looked at the score averages for home games and for away games. The study was similar to previous
experiments because of how the study looked at win to loss ratio for home and away

Online Banking
Introduction
The World Wide Web has changed our culture in so many ways. People are able to do so many
activities over the World Wide Web, it is unbelievable. You can pursue a degree through online
universities, communicate with users around the world, purchase goods and services online, and yes,
you can bank and pay your bills online. This new technology has enabled us to make payments,
maintain a checking/debit card account, balance transfers, all via the web. You can maintain your
entire financial portfolio through online banks that provide this feature. There are online banks that
can provide interactivity between popular financial management software programs, such as Quicken

These services used to range from free to fifteen dollars per month.
Disadvantages of online banking include the amount of time it takes to create and authorize your
account. In most cases, you will be required to visit the local branch to sign verification papers and
provide authentic identification. I must say I disagree with the article calling this a disadvantage. It is
certainly not convenient, but I would not call it a disadvantage. The learning curve is listed as a
disadvantage. Online banking sites can be very difficult to navigate, especially for new users.
Finally, and probably the most obvious, is the issue of trust you have in your online banking facility.
How secure is the transmission of my private information? How can I be sure the transaction went
through? Who else will have access to my information? This trust issue and skepticism of security is
by far the biggest concern of potential online banking consumers. The Ponemon Institute is dedicated
to studying ethical information management practices and research. The institute conducted a survey
this year entitled Privacy Trust Survey for Online Banking with 2,300 participants. In the institute s
research, it is found that eighty two percent of banking consumers say identity theft is their main
concern. The next two biggest concerns are telemarketing abuse and unauthorized

depression has worsened. It was during this time that he began to write and publish The Raven and
Eureka. The raven seemed to depict Edgar and his late wife in some way. The poem talks about a lover
mourning the loss of his love. Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December; And each
separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. Eagerly I wished the morrow; vainly I had

A sexy mermaid calendar with bearded men? Yes, please
( removed HTML )
Mermaids have fascinated humans for hundreds of years. Originally they were part of old sea tales
creatures who would drown sailors. Then Disney got ahold of Ariel and mermaids became kid
friendly. Next, Starbucks made one their logo, and over the past couple of years women have started
knitted themselves tail blankets or taking mermaid swimming lessons. Men have pretty much stayed
out of the mermaid realm, until now.
Introducing the Merb ys
We re going to bet that you ve never seen a sight like this. Say hello to the sexy mermen that are

Spirit Horse NL is a program that helps people with mental health issues using horses. Dogs are much
more common therapy animals than horses, but horses are also incredibly intelligent. Each person in
the program learns life skills by learning how to take care of a horse, and receives the companionship
of a horse to help with the mental health issues. The program is very expensive because taking care of
a horse is pricey. The Merb ys hope that their calendar will help raise awareness and money for the
program.

Why the name Merb ys?
Newfoundland is an island that you can only access by boat or by plane. Since Newfoundland has
always been a little isolated, Newfoundlanders have a very distinct accent that borders on
Scottish/Irish sounding. With the Newfie accent mermaids ended up sounding like merb ys, and that s
what the guys decided to name the calendar.

Naturalistic Evolutionary View
The exact age of the Earth has long been an argument between those who believe that God created the
Earth for humans during the Creation Week, which is known as the Young Earth Creation View and
that the age of Earth can easily be counted from that week based on divine revelation direct from
scripture, and those that believe that it was created 4.6 billion years ago out of nothing, which is
known as the Naturalistic Evolutionary view point.
Naturalistic Evolution In Naturalistic Evolutionary view point, Earth was formed out of nothing 4.6
billion years ago, and went through several different periods of intense transition to arrive at what we
now see. The first period of transition is known as the Precambrian in which the most important
events ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The last and shortest period of change is the Cenozoic Era which consists of two time periods: Tertiary
and Quaternary. During this time period the continents assumed their modern configuration as well as
geographical positions (Berggren, 2016). The formation of many mountain chains (The Rockies, the
Alps and the Himalayas) happened during this time. One of the main arguments against Naturalistic
evolution is that it provides no space for a divine/other intelligent being to have created the world.

Summary Of Tim Winton s Short Story Big World
Discovery of self may be a common process that can improve and deepen understanding of the
individuals and the world around them. It is through these new understandings that individuals are
able to both reunite with themselves and the wider society. This concept is presented clearly in the
poem The door by Miroslav Holub representing that change in self involves taking chances and
opportunities and the positive consequences of change. Holub conveys change as an individual s
commitment to take new opportunities presented to them, resulting in a new perspective of life. The
short story Big world by Tim Winton reveals that self exploration and the substantial growth and
development happen through findings that contain experiences, which challenge ... Show more

The short story Big world by Winton emphasizes the intention that there are moments, people, times
and places that can change how individuals view the world around them and how the perceive
themselves. Much like the protagonist s experience in the film Life of Pi , so does Winton s
protagonists in the short story display final epiphany come as a outcome of his loneliness. He is
isolated because of the plot twist made by Meg, who in the story builds a connection with his best
friend, Biggie while they are on a road trip. It is through his segregation and observing them that he
then realises and notices a ominous truth about himself and the relationship he has with Biggie: ... he s
enjoying being brighter than her...it s me all over. It s how I am with him and its not pretty. Through
this, the protagonist suffers, realising the detrimental and unproductive environment of his
relationship. This epiphany leads him to become even more secluded and alert that he must move on if
he is to find and discover joy and progress. The story also reconnoitres the idea of change of self and
attitudes towards others, where moments can express a person s perspective towards others around
them and life. This statement is accurate as the narrator comes to terms with his attachment with
Biggie, that s how it started. A single decisive

Descriptive Essay On Venice
Summer is ending and the leaves are kicking in, the weather is at the peak of perfection and you can
still enjoy a nice scoop of gelato ice cream without freezing from Suso; because who doesn t love
frozen treats? The only issue is where in the world is Suso located?! Let s just say you can probably
drop a good $500 on a one way trip to Venice, not just to enjoy a nice scoop of gelato but to bask in
the ambiance that is an eons worth of history, art, and culture. When you think of Italy, probably the
first thing that pops into your mind is the beautiful watercolored water reflecting the architecture all
while the setting sun taints the skies with crimson and violets. The ripples harmonizing the colors
together, while they are propelled by the gondolier as he sings; when the moon hits your eyes like a
big pizza pie, that s amore. Good ole Dean Martin. Venice is the place to be if you re passionate about
romance, and not just simple everyday romance, but the kind that makes you believe in fairy tales and
stardust. The kind of romance that is timeless and forever engrained in your heart, so if marriage is
part of the trip make sure to be wise. Apart from being a firm believer of romance, if you re an art
connosieur then feast your eyes because they will glimmer like a child who just discovered bacon for
the first time in their life. First off the architecture here is sophisticated, so if you re passionate about
architecture then the place to visit and feel re inspired and

This has led to reduced interest income for the commercial banks and other financial institutions and
by extension reduction in profits (De Young and Roland, 2001; Dziobek, 1998; Uyemura and Van

Credit risk is the possibility that the actual return on an investment or loan extended will deviate from
that, which was expected (Conford, 2000). Coyle (2000) defines credit risk as losses from the refusal
or inability of credit customers to pay what is owed in full and on time. The main sources of credit risk
include, limited institutional capacity, inappropriate credit policies, volatile interest rates, poor
management, inappropriate laws, low capital and liquidity levels, directed lending, massive licensing
of banks, poor loan underwriting, reckless lending, poor credit assessment., no non executive
directors, poor loan underwriting, laxity in credit assessment, poor lending practices, government

While the libations flowed, those edgy revelers were trying out their well rehearsed and choreographed, goo goo eyed social moves on one another, intent on making an impression. Abby was certain that the green section contained chlorophyll, whereas, Estelle claimed that both the green and purple parts of the coleus plants consisted of chlorophyll. A paper chromatography test was conducted to clearly separate the mixture of the pigments in which the mixture was dropped onto a slip of paper and the end was then placed into a solvent. After analyzing both the green and purple sections of the leaves, our data affirmed Estelle s statement who claimed that chlorophyll existed in the green and purple part of the coleus plant. He is well known for the greatest contribution he did to biology and chemistry with the identification of elements properties and the creation of the periodic table, as well as the deep study of catalysts, solutions and crude oil. He wrote the many creations he did in his books and works, like The principles of Chemistry. Despite the brilliant person he was, his childhood wasn t easy. He was the youngest of more than twelve children, which caused his family to cope with many crises and hunger for years. But the worst came later, when Mendeleyev s father was working and suddenly became blind, so his mother had to take the money home instead of him. She had luck and became the manager of a glass factory. However, this didn t last too long, due a fire in the factory that burned it down. At this time, none of the parents worked, so the family faced poverty. There were many arguments raised about the poor law amendment act of 1834, this Act was thought to be the most contentious piece of legislation passed during the era of the Whig s. At the time, it was a lot about saving money, the upper class did not want to pay towards the poor law, as they believed they were lazy and unworthy. The taxpayers, and ratepayers believed it to be wrong they should be paying to help the poor. The workhouse system was one of the most inhumane of all time, humiliating and demeaning all the poor people that entered it. Some individuals wanted reform for the use of child labour, trying to get less working hours with an age limit. Seebohm Rowntree, and Charles Booth also called for reform for these poor people, as they were appalled at the atrocious working conditions of these factories, mills, and mines. The individuals, and groups, who fought for these reforms, worked endlessly for many years to achieve a safe environment for these poor people. The owners of these factories and mills had to realise, they could still make a profit, without jeopardizing the lives of the workers through their neglect. Politicians also knew they had to have reform in the factories, with Germany having a much healthier workforce and better working conditions, their production was much higher than ours. They needed educated, healthy workers to get the same standard of work Germany was producing. The first effective, piece of factory legislation was the Factory Act of 1833. These applied to all textile mills, except those making silk and lace; · No child under nine could be employed. · Children from nine to thirteen were limited to an eight hour day, and were to receive at least two hours of education a day. · Young people from fourteen to eighteen were limited to a twelve hour day, to be worked between 5.30 a.m. and 8.30 p.m. · Four inspectors were appointed at an annual ... The Decision That Should Matter But Don t Dean Styx Due Date ENG105 Jenny Downer WAII the Decision that should matter but don t The modern era, politically, has been defined by the right of everyone s own decision, for who s in power, what they do in power and how to stop them if they get too powerful. It was the individual s decision to let one into power. Of course if a country did not do this, we as Americans would see that as backwards and not right to the point of military intervention when in our own nation we do not get full say in who become president. The decision making does not include world leaders but also includes the day to day decisions and our own life decisions we make every day, such as our job decisions. But it would seem that all these decisions are pointless ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He describes how the western philosophy has described how to make a better world by just simply giving the individuals more choice in the world. Schwartz then later in the lecture goes on to explain how this ever growing amount of choice can lead to a paralysis of choice. According to Schwartz this paralysis is being exemplified by the amount of choices given to them. This has led to an opposite effect where instead of giving more choices equals a better life, now more choices means no choices at all leading to no choice at all. Schwartz gives another example of cellphones doing Ludacris things such as nose trimming, toothbrush and even a lighter. Here exemplifies how the growing number of choices has led to the elderly simply not getting cell phones or televisions because they cannot understand how to use the call feature or how to change the channel of the television. The vast amount of choices has also lead to the agency of our choices to decease as well. With so many options our decisions rely totally on us according to Schwartz, that if our choice in anything is so much as not perfect, then our decision was a bad decision and one could have made a better decision. Which leads to a loss in agency in oneself as well as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Water provides us with necessary hydration for our bodies, gives us means to grow crops and raise animals, it acts as a highway for boats and barges, and through water, humanity has thrived. The recipe for water is a relatively simple one, all you need is to combine one part oxygen and two part hydrogen and suddenly you have the key to life on earth. Water is arguably the most valuable resource that exists on planet earth and yet, it is quickly slipping out of our reach. Water covers over seventy percent of earth s surface, but only about three percent of that water is available for human use as freshwater. The main source of freshwater is permanent ice sheets, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ethanol made its debut in the early 1970s, and by the late 1980s, ethanol was beginning to be used for fueling cars (Fuel testers, 2012). Now in the midst of the green movement of the 2000s, ethanol can be found in over 90 percent of gasoline at public gas stations (Fuel testers, 2012). This technology is being pushed to new extremes as it strives toward its goal of replacing gasoline as our main fuel source. Ethanol promises us less gas emissions, less dependence on foreign oil, and prolonged use of a healthier environment. This happy picture ethanol has painted, however, might be too good to be true. As the demand for ethanol rises, the demand for corn grown by American farmers also rises. As the demand for corn rises, the water necessary to irrigate those crops also rises. As water use rises, our water supply diminishes. At first glance, ethanol as a new fuel supply appeared to be the answer to all of our problems, but now Americans need to reconsider this corn grown miracle. First and foremost, the water to ethanol payoff is shockingly low. Fully irrigated, corn takes up to 1,200 gallons of water to produce one gallon of ethanol (Bio Energy, 2013). To create a little over two gallons of ethanol, farmers need to grow one bushel of corn, which consumes over 3,172 gallons of water (Bio Energy, 2013). • 10. Physiological Perception Filters When a person glimpses the face of a famous actor, sniffs a favourite food or hears the voice of a friend, recognition is instant. Within a fraction of a second after the eyes, nose, ears, tongue or skin is stimulated, one knows the object is familiar and whether it is desirable or dangerous. How does such recognition, which psychologists call preattentive perception, happen so accurately and quickly, even when the stimuli are complex and the context in which they arise varies? Much is known about the way the cerebral cortex, the outer rind of the brain, initially analyses sensory messages. Yet investigations are only now beginning to suggest how the brain moves beyond the mere extraction of features how it combines sensory messages with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... PHASE PORTRAITS made from electroencephalograms (EEGs) generated by a computer model of the brain reflect the overall activity of the olfactory system at rest (above) and during perception of a familiar scent (right). Resemblance of the portraits to irregularly shaped, but still structured, coils of wire reveals that brain activity in both conditions is chaotic: complex but having some underlying order. The more circular shape of the right hand image, together with its greater segregation of colour, indicates that olfactory EEGs are more ordered more nearly periodic during perception than during rest. Also, how does the brain achieve what is called generalization over equivalent receptors? Because of turbulence in nasal airflow, only a few of the many receptors that are sensitive to an odorant are excited during a sniff, and the selection varies unpredictably from one sniff to the next. How does the brain recognize that signals from different collections of receptors all refer to the same stimulus? Our investigations begin to suggest answers to both problems. Many of our insights were derived from intensive studies of the olfactory bulb. Those experiments show clearly that every neuron in the bulb participates in generating each olfactory perception. In other words, the salient information about the stimulus is carried in some

Often, college graduates find themselves in a predicament where they are dissatisfied with their current job in their field of study and do not know what to do. A career assessment test can serve as a guide for those in need of a career path, direction or suggestion. The purpose of a career assessment test is to suggest careers one might be well suited for. There are different assessment tools available online; some are available for a fee, while some are free. I was reluctant at first to take the tests because I do not believe a test can tell me what career or job I am well suited for. Furthermore, the assessments are extremely opinionated. The results are based on information you provide. We may think we are soft and sensitive, but that may necessarily be the case. When taking a career assessment test administered by careercolleges.com, I came across the following question: When making decisions do you try to remain objective and consider the facts or do you allow your feelings and the effect of the decision of others to influence your decision? The novel is told by an omniscient narrator following Winston, a man questioning his memory and the morality of Big Brother s government, which is most effective for this novel. Thus, through Winston s internal dialogue, Orwell alludes to Nazi Germany s past to predict Oceania s future in order to create a parallel between the structure and attitudes of the two nations, which communicates his theme (and warns his readers) that certain trends in government will lead to violation of individual rights, and therefore ... Additionally, members of the inner and outer parties shared the same characteristics as those in power of the Nazi regime: tall muscular youths and deep bosomed maidens, blond haired, vital, sunburnt, carefree (60). In addition to the similarities in structure, Oceania also destroyed all books created before Big Brother gained power. Therefore, the structure of Oceania is a direct parallel to Nazi Germany and conveys Orwell s message that an initial breach of individual liberties will continue until all originality is destroyed. • 21. How Did Shinto Influence Japanese Culture Shinto, an ethnic, ritualistic religion of Japan, has proved somewhat adaptable to social change and significantly more adaptable to political change within the nation since its initial emergence, with origins which trace back to 300BC . While experts argue that Shinto has been extremely influential in shaping Japanese culture and identity, its popularity has been diminishing since the religion was imposed by the State in Japan s pre World War II, evoking a surge of nationalism. In today s society, the religion has made conscious efforts to regain popularity, however has not been able to wholly adapt to Japan s modern social context, despite it being syncretic in nature (and popularly combined with Japanese Buddhist or Confucian practices). ... The position of emperor before this however, was principally ceremonial, and the emperor typically lived in imprisonment until the Meiji restoration period (1868 1912). Instead, Japan was predominantly led by feudal noblemen, rather than the figure head. By World War II, however, the Emperor was widely believed to be divine, and worshipped as a god, partially as a result of Japanese radical right ultra nationalism . This was an ideology which propagated, and spread to mainstream Japan by the 1930 s, after being introduced during the Meiji period, through mass military conscription, industrialization, and subtle propaganda promoting Japan as a family state , done so in an effort to ...to solidify the emperor system against the increasing power of Western liberal thought. Emperor Hirohito, Japan s 124th emperor, was the face of this movement. After aligning themselves to Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy as a result of the 1940 Tripartite Act, Japan attacked the United States in 1941 in Pearl Harbour. Once the war began, the patriotic Japanese public were lied to about great victories which had not happened in an attempt to maintain morale and support. Following U.S occupation in 1945, Emperor Hirohito was forced to renounce his divinity to the nation in 1946. This was followed by a reform of the Japanese Constitution, which came into effect in May 1947. New nation wide liberties were introduced, such as a freedom of religion were introduced, meaning Shinto could no longer be imposed as a State religion. • 22. How Religious Figures Are Depicted How Religious Figures are Depicted in Films Religion often plays an important role in Hollywood films, but do Hollywood films play an important role in religion? Perhaps the better question is, Does film play an important role in the way people understand religious concepts? Although the best reasons for going to the movies are to be entertained and eat popcorn, understanding a film is actually quite complex. Movies are not only a reflection of life, they also have the capability of shaping our norms, values, attitudes, and perception of life. Through the media of film, one can find stories of practically anything imaginable and some things unimaginable. Movie makers use their art to entertain, to promote political agendas, to educate, and to present life as it is, was, or could be. They can present truth, truth as they interpret it, or simply ignore truth altogether. A movie can be a work of fiction, non fiction, or anything in between. A film is an artist s interpretation. What one takes away from a film depends upon how one interprets what has been seen and heard. Understanding film is indeed difficult. Understanding religion is also complex. In American society, Christianity is the largest religion; however, there are vast differences among Christians, as to what one is to believe and how one s beliefs are to be put into practice. It s the mixture of beliefs and practices of other religions and the absence of any religious belief. America is indeed a melting pot when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. The Defamation Of Women In The Medieval Era Defamation of women during the medieval period stemmed from Christian ideology that claimed women were mentally weaker and therefore more susceptible to temptations of the flesh. This assumption often resulted in women being portrayed as overly sexual beings that aggressively sought to physically soil a man s goodness. As painted in Bibliothèque De L Arsenal, the woman is shown as a contentious predator that clings to the man s clothes urging him to sleep with her. It can be noted that he is half dressed, quite clearly uncomfortable and attempting to make an escape while she, fully naked, tugs at the bottom of his shirt to come towards the bed. In the piece she is aggressive in her lust, painting her as inherently sinful. Yet another common theme that characterized female integrity can be found in the penis trees drawn throughout the era. In Massa Marittima s Mural, the implication that women harvested penises and were more interested in the physical aspects of a man rather than the Christian influenced concepts of celibacy and purity were openly accepted. Pictures like these were not created by women or based on any concrete experience, instead they repeatedly drew inspiration from perpetuated stereotypes that further discredited the morality of women. These stereotypes were not only found in paintings but in literature as well. In Jean de Meun s popular tale, Romance of the Rose, an older woman speaks on her advice for younger women. • 27. The Effects Of Energy Subsidies On The Consumer, The... Abstract Subsidies are one of the most powerful policy tools in the hands of the government. They have been used for decades to achieve a range of economic, social and environmental objectives. Indeed, one of the most important and challenging responsibilities of a government is allocating financial resources to achieve public good. This paper analyses the effects of energy subsidies on the consumer, the economy and the energy industry. Energy subsidies are any government actions that support the cost of energy production in terms of reduction in prices paid by consumers and increase in revenues to energy producers (World Bank, 2010). These investments aim to improve energy access by making prices more affordable, shielding domestic consumers from international price volatility and supporting energy intensive industries (The International Institute for sustainable development, 2012). In practice, energy subsidies come in different forms. (The IEA, 2002) and (UNEP, 2008) identify the following typical mechanisms by which governments support the production and consumption of energy: Direct financial transfers: grants to consumers, grants to producers, low interest or preferential loans and government loan guarantees; Preferential tax treatment: tax credits, tax rebates, exemptions on royalties, duties or tariffs, reduced tax rates, deferred tax liabilities and accelerated depreciation on energy supply equipment; Trade restrictions: tariffs, tariff rate import quotas ... For example, at the start of the war, finds made in Poland were used as an excuse for German occupation under the grounds that it was once German land. Arguably one of the most iconic examples of the representation of Arian ideology is the Nazi swastika. Even prior to its adoption by Hitler, the Swastika was interpreted to represent the concept of the Arian race. As far back as 1880 Michal von Zmigrodski Ludvig Müller claimed the Swastika to be of Indo European origin. He theorized that it represented the ancient Arian sun god. Taking this concept further, he stated that the swastika originated in the German homeland, linking Germany with the home of the supposed Aryan race. (Mees, 2008: 57 58) Thus, when a Swastika like symbol was discovered in other areas of the world such as during excavations at the Greek city of Troy, the Aryan identity of the swastika was once again used to propagate the spread of German influence. (Mees, 2008: 59) This led to individuals such as Hitler making claims that the German/Aryan race had claim to these areas, having once been the land of their ancestors. By the time the Swastika was adopted by the Nazi party, it had come to represent a purely Arian symbol. This ideology all stemmed from the study of prehistory, leading to the resulting excavations in which the SS Ahnenerbe sought to create/find evidence in support of the theorized Nordic pagan solar worship. Mesmer favored an altogether gentler approach, and his devotion to his patients was quite extraordinary. His breakthrough case was that of Franzl Oesterline, a 27 year old woman suffering from what Mesmer described as a convulsive malady, the most troublesome symptoms of which was that the blood rushed to her head and there set up the most cruel toothaches and earaches, followed by delirium, rage, vomiting and swooning . These symptoms were so severe that Fraulein Oesterline moved into Mesmer s house to receive round the clock care. Returning to the theories of his student days, Mesmer introduced a cure by using a magnet to disrupt the gravitational tides adversely affecting his patient. He successfully induced in Fraulein Oesterline the sensation of a fluid draining rapidly from her body, taking her illness with it. Her recovery after that was complete and virtually instantaneous (Kirsch et.al., 1995). From a modern perspective, we can see that the results were produced by the hypnotic suggestion of a fluid draining from the body, a wonderful healing metaphor that wouldn t be out of place in a 21st century hypnotherapy practice. The essay will also reflect my understanding of the concept hidden curriculum. I will also explain the different levels in the educational system. The second section of the essay I will focus on what I have identified as the hidden curriculum during my teaching practice experience. In my conclusion I will address the hidden curriculum in order to redress the concern I have identified. The hidden curriculum is lessons that we as educators teach informally or unintentionally at school. Learners will learn unintended values, beliefs, behaviours and norms in the classroom and the social learning environment (Department of Educational Studies, 2015). They may learn how to interact with other learners for example debates and class discussions and group work. Hidden curriculum will initially begin at a young age for learners. In primary school they will be taught how to greet an educator and to say please and thank you (Department of Educational Studies, 2015). We can basically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During my classroom observations it was clear that parents are transferring a lot of the blame or responsibility to the schools and educators. Educators had to teach the learners to greet and respect other learners. The principal also made use of the hidden curriculum by telling educators to see that the learners are in class during periods and to speak to learners that are a problem. Another example that I saw during my teaching experience was that if learners got good grades and turn in their homework on time or even listen to the educator during the class they were rewarded. By doing this the educator taught the learners how to behave as well as to take pride in their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Iran and Modernity All states within the international system have to bow to the inevitable and embrace its inherent dynamic force that determines the structure of their governance. Thus, no society within the international arena can stay in voluntary solitary confinement and ward itself off modernity. Berman defines modernism as any attempt by modern men and women to become subjects as well as objects of modernisation, to get a grip on the modern world and make themselves at home in it (Berman_1988_p. 5), which becomes increasingly troubled especially in relation to modernising the societal system of the Muslim countries. And in Article 2, the repugnancy clause is enshrined so that no laws can be contrary to the religion of Islam and its interpretation in the Shia faith (Video_5.3_36:18). Successful incorporation of Islamic principles into the Constitution embodies the principles of religious reformism explicitly underpinning the profound formative role of Islam defining the legal identity of the country. Indeed, Iranian history offers other quintessential examples of modernisation attempts invoking the spirit of emulation. Reza Shah follows the trend of social modernisation while striving to further reshape the structure of Iranian society by implementing a multitude of reforms including education health, transport or industrial sectors. Despite their relative success, Shah s enforcement of western dress code encounters stiff resistance of citizens again supported by the clergy. If adopting slightly simplistic approach, it was his son backed by the Western powers, who leaves the most distinctive bad taste in the Iranians mouth after instituting his reformist policy designed to secularise the country. Mohammad Reza Shah s reign prepared a fertile ground for the 1978 Islamist Revolution. The most critical factors contributing to it were the Shah s reassertion of control over the country after the coup orchestrated by foreign intelligence services in 1953 defending the vital Western oil interests. • 42. Artificial Reefs Used as Fisheries The main objective of our study is to determine if artificial reefs can be used as a fisheries enhancement or conservation tool in Narragansett Bay. Using a variety of research techniques, we will attempt to answer the following questions: (1) do artificial reefs increase the abundance (and biomass) of important species of demersal sport fish? Or (2) do reefs attract existing numbers of fish to the reef and increase the rate of exploitation, thus potentially decreasing localized populations (or communities)? By building a carefully replicated network of artificial reefs, we will advance research on the impact of artificial reefs. In order to address our study questions, we propose the construction of 0.25 acre artificial reefs (0.5 acre area) using pre fabricated reef modules in three locations of Narragansett Bay. The creation of small scale experimental reefs will not only provide long term research stations but will also improve benthic habitat conditions in an area of soft sediments. The performance of artificial reefs varies considerably, depending on materials used as well as location of deployment and intended results. Breakup, movement, and burial have been reported to occur in reef programs. The location and design of reef complexes must be carefully chosen to balance the goals and objectives of a project with environmental and social constraints (Table 1). We used geospatial and fisheries data to ensure that our reef locations are placed in the most suitable ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Today, investors enjoy access to the same types as investments as in times past with Real estate, Real Estate Investment Trust s (REIT s), Derivatives, Hedge funds, Currencies and so many more thrown into the mix. Here we will consider Real estate investing, the different types of real estate to consider and why one serves the investor over another as it relates to investing inside a qualified retirement plan. Unlike so many other investments, real estate is unique because it can be leveraged. Banks will lend upwards to 60% percent of the properties value with non recourse funds inside retirement plans. Only plans that have a certain income through annual contributions or large cash flows from wholly owned properties should leverage, especially on commercial or industrial assets. Generally, there are 3 types of investments: Land, Commercial/Industrial and Residential. Land is a complex investment that requires a certain level of expertise, which many investors do not possess, but can provide explosive returns. Investing in land can require years of negative cash flows before any appreciable gain is realized. As land is considered, two important rules of land investing comes to mind: 1) The profit made in virtually any land deal is made the day of purchase, which is to say always buy lower than market; 2) For everyday a land asset is held in ... The Ponemon Institute is dedicated to studying ethical information management practices and research. It is through these new understandings that individuals are able to both reunite with themselves and the wider society. Holub conveys change as an individual s commitment to take new opportunities presented to them, resulting in a new perspective of life.
