Dmitri Mendeleev Research Paper
Ben Jensen Mr. Houston Chemistry 14 May 2014 Dmitri Mendeleev It is the function of science
to discover the existence of a general reign of order in nature and to find the causes governing this
order. And this refers in equal measure to the relations of man social and political and to the entire
universe as a whole. This quote from Dmitri Mendeleev, a famous chemist from the mid 1800s,
helps illustrate both his work as a chemist and his opinion about the importance of scientific
research and education. Dmitri Mendeleev was an important chemist and influential scientist whose
discovery of the periodic table helped contribute to society by creating a way for the elements to be

He was also a founder of the Russian Chemical Society. Mendeleev worked tirelessly to improve
Russia s economy through the petroleum and coal industry. Married twice, he had a combined total
of six children. He was also presented several prestigious awards for his scientific achievements. In
1905, he was awarded the Copley Medal, the highest honor of the British Royal Society, granted
membership to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and was very nearly awarded the Nobel
Prize for Chemistry. In 1955, element 101 was named Mendelevium in his honor. Mendeleev died
on February 2, 1907, and was buried in St. Petersburg, but his legacy lives on. His mission, to create
an organized system for classifying the elements, has finally been achieved. Works Cited Bensaude

Indian Gaming Regulatory Act Case Study
The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act was passed by the United States on October 17, 1988, to
manage gaming on tribal lands. It provided the main framework by providing a legislative basis for
operation of Indian gaming. It protected the right to game which encourages increases in revenue
and economic development within tribes. It also ensured that the games were fair and honest. This
law established the National Indian Gaming Commission, which is a independent federal regulatory
agency within the Department of Interior. This commission is the only federal agency that is solely
purposed to manage gambling, which sometimes involves other departments such as the U.S.
Department of Justice. In my opinion, Indian gaming is positive and most likely... Show more

The most important of the Cs are communication and collaboration. Communication plays the most
important role because two separate entities tend to always have different ways of handling
government cases. They can easily misinterpret legislation because both do not have mutual
understanding or even a good relationship to begin with. This results in lack of knowledge in
areas related to Indian nations and passing of laws that unknowingly negatively impact tribal
growth. This can be see in many situations today such as environmental policy that can negatively
impact natural resources that Indian nations heavily depend on. Collaboration plays an important
role because it is necessary when dealing with tribal cases that require specific expertise. The
correct resources are required in striving to succeed with longterm legislative goals. Lawyers and
political experts are necessary in forming a platform to make impactful decisions especially
dealing with higher levels of courts within the U.S. Coalitions and interest groups also demonstrate
this by collaborating multiple parties to increase backing to push for specific critical issues. One of
the reasons that prevent the 4Cs from being part of the modern federal Indian relationship is the
nature of the two party system. Ongoing elections and shifting of new positions often prevent the
4Cs because competing ideologies prevent change and

I felt that sandals should be associated with tropical vacations for all the rest of us, but that barbed
wire represent hard life of people in those areas of Dominican Republic. I kept questioning myself
who were the people who worn this sandals? Where they slaves that somebody made them wear
barbed wire sandals so they can keep feeling hurt or only locals wore them as a part of some
ritual? I finally realize that those sandals represent life in poverty and eagerness for better life.
These sandals represent people who would be better off if their only problem was wearing this
sandals. Their lives had much more pain than any foot hurt by barbed wire sandal. I had a mixed
feelings while looking at those sandals, remembering my life while growing up in war destroyed
country while my parents were trying to find ways to migrate from Yugoslavia and make my life
better. Thank God they succeed, but there are still marks from barbed wire on our feet and pain is
sometimes coming back.

What Is Power In The Handmaids Tale
In The Handmaid s Tale, a social hierarchy is shown, especially between the women and men. It s
interesting that even among the women women had more power than others. Handmaids, despite
not having more power than the Wives or Aunts these women hold power, their ovaries.
Handmaids are women who capable of conceiving and are used to bare children. Handmaids, in
my opinion, will be in the middle(middle class). Wives are of course usually married to
Commanders because of their husbandthese women have a certain amount of power and are
accustomed to a certain lifestyle. Wives show that who you are married to matters the wives are
infertile themselves. If the wives weren t married to high ranking men they will be a unwoman,

This movie is kinda similar as Alice and the wonderland. It has all the same characters but a few
new added like for instance Time . I know right Time that s a weird name right ? Well he is what
his name is he is Time but they made Time into a character . Hes basically a huge clock but does
not look like it . But anyways back to what I was saying. The setting changed from the last movie
and Alice now knows that this isn t a dream it s a Real place . But this time Alice has a mission
to do . ALice has to save hatter. Hatter is sick and depressed Alice has to save him before he well
you know dies . Can Alice save hatter ? i guess you have to watch the movie to find that out !
Another thing about these three movies is that they have different and alike characters . In the
movie Charlie and the chocolate factory they have real people . There s no animals are fake
people. But they are all from different cultures. Charlie is a boy from a medium sized town that
grew up poor . charlie parents didn t really have money . Their house had holes in the calling . All
four of his grandparents slept in the front room on a bed . They didn t really have heat they wore
heavy coats socks and gloves all day long

The Land Of Opportunity Analysis
America has long been viewed as a most interesting place, not composed of its own, but of people
from around the world, and a place where one can achieve their dreams. It is notable, however, that
America has also acquired the title The Land of Opportunity . So, gathering evidence from varying
sources, such as olden newspaper articles to modern day books on the topic, one might begin to
analyze how deserving America is of that title. As an introduction into the vastly explained
conclusion this piece comes to, taking into account what initial immigrants of varying nationalities
came to America for, and felt after, an analysis of the sort of national philosophy that is the

What should be made known is that America continually comes back from these hardships,
economically, and more importantly, mentally. Certain other countries have had the misfortune
of being in an economic limbo, whilst America has this seemingly natural ability to bypass that
and afford greater luxuries, such as stable economies, in reference to a cycle, of course. So, is to
such a place that has this type of economic safeguard any dream realizable? Evidently so Lastly,
in video form, comes the modern day interpretation of the American Dream, from everyday
people, in an economic situation similar to that of the environment in which Adams wrote his
article, yet not as severe as that. It should first be noted that the concept Adams spoke of, gaining
a more grounded sense of the world in times of economic hardship, is exactly what occurs in the
video. Analyzed in the video, it was stated that in times of moderate crisis, people begin to change
their beliefs, those being in this case their opinions of material wealth and how apparent such is in

Summary Of A Very Lucky Daughter By Skrzynecki
How has your understanding of belong been shaped by your study of Skrzynecki s poem and the
related text of your choosing?
Our sense of belonging is not only sculpted by our own experiences through what we encounter,
but also the experiences of others. By reading and analyzing the authentic experiences Peter
Skrzynecki and Sharon Liao wrote about I was able to refine my perception and collective
knowledge of belonging and what it entails.
My study of Migrant Hostels , Feliks Skrzynecki and A Very Lucky Daughter the two composers
have brought my focus on a range of different circumstances revolving around the ideas of
belonging in the respective hearts of both first and second generation migrants, capturing the
occurrences they encounter with assimilating into a new land and culture as well as the disturbance
this assimilation creates within the relationships of families and outsiders.

Essay Mergers and Acquisitions
Nowadays mergers and acquisitions are regarded as a key strategic option for the organisations all
over the world. According to Huang and Kleiner (2004) mergers and acquisitions have become the
principal means by which companies have the opportunity to grow revenues due to factors such as
gloabalisation, rapid technological changes, a long term bull market and strategic barriers to
growth. Porter and Singh (2010) admit that mergers and acquisitionsplay an important role in
reallocation of resources in an economy. Despite the huge increase of corporate mergers and
acquisitions during the last decades many surveys show that the majority of them fail (Nguyen

Roll (1986) states that the hubris model indicates that over confident managers make wrong
estimations about the value of the potential targets and as a consequence they decrease the value of
their shareholders wealth when the acquisition is completed.
The main objective of mergers and acquisitions is to increase market share and shareholder value
by decreasing costs and implementing improved services (Nguyen and Kleiner 2003). Each
organisation in this process targets the strengths and the capabilities of the other in order to
improve its position in the market. Stallworthy and Kharbanda (1988) argue that one of the main
objectives of mergers and acquisitions is the acquirer s diversification with minimum cost in
order to be protected and be restructured in a possible crisis. Keenan and White (1982) mention
that firms seek for synergies in order to diversify and reduce the possibility of bankruptcy, achieve
a better fit between the talents of corporate managers and the resources at their disposals and
simultaneously acquire a bigger market share. Moreover Moon (1976) remarks that many firms
choose to spread the risks by branching out into other unrelated industries or trades.
Furthermore, mergers and acquisitions give the opportunity to buyers to grow faster, to achieve
larger scales of economies and profitability with an existed market share, to eliminate a competitor
by acquiring it and complete effective

Sassanian Rock Relief Essay
The Sassanian rock relief of the Triumph of Shapur I at Naqsh e Rustam defines a major point in
Sassanid history in which Shapur I defeated the Emperor Valerian in 257 A.D. After the First
Roman War, Shapur I then went on to destroy the entire Roman Army in the Second Roman War
during the early 250s A.D. This major event forms the basis of this rock relief, which shows the
surrender of Emperor Valerian and Philip the Arab. This conquest is yet another example of the
success of Shapur Ito defeat the Roman Empire, which became part of a public event showing the
power of the king over his enemies:

This is, once again, a form of royal triumphalism that Shapur I emulates in this massive carving at
this location. Certainly, the interrelationship between the successions of Sassanid kings provides a
context for these public presentations of high relief stone carvings, which would have also been a
public event for those witnessing king Shapur I during this historical period.
The investiture relief at Naqsb i Rustam of Ardashir I is yet another aspect of the public ceremony
of royal triumphalism in the way that gods, such as Ahura Mazda, are shown giving the beribboned
investiture ring to Ardashir I. Ardashir I s coronation as the King of Sassanid Empirein 224 B.C.
reveals the god like qualities given to the king through the gift of kingship presented by Ahura
Mazda. Naturally, this iconographic presentation of investiture was most likely part of a much
larger public ceremony, which had become immortalized by this rock carving of the event:
The installment of Ardashir as king of Persis is the subject of the relief at Naqsh i Radjab. Such
an official ceremony would normally be a fairly public event (Overlaet, 2013,

Tradition vs. Modernity, Amy Kramer
England and India never did understand one another. (Prasad 37)
Undilute East had always been too much for the West; and soulful East always came lap dog
fashion to the West, mutually asking to be not too little and not too much, but just right. (Prasad 37)
The struggle of individuals caught between tradition and modernity, or between
India and the west, is a very common theme in Indian literature. This struggle is evident in Nectar
in a Sieve, as Rukmani often finds herself battling between her traditional views and opinions, and
the various modern forces that seem to be taking over her life.
On the one hand, Rukmani yearns for the traditional way of life she has always known and loved,
while at certain times she acknowledges the benefits ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once Arjun and Thambi begin working at the tannery, Rukmani realizes that she is thankful for the
money they are bringing home from the tannery, as her family [begins] once again to live well
(Markandaya 57).
Rukmani also finds herself struggling as she witnesses the breakdown of traditional Indian roles
and practices. Firstly, Rukmani comes to realize that none of her sons are going to follow in
Nathan s footsteps and work on the land for a living. This causes Nathan to feel as if the children
in whom he lives have forsaken him because it is traditional practice for the sons of a farmer to
work alongside their father and take over working the land once their father passes on (Srivastava
38).
Secondly, the crumbling of well established traditions is evident to Rukmani when she learns of the
marriage of her son Murugan. Rukmani was brought up with the widespread practice of arranged
marriage; however, with the sudden displacement of many village people into cities, the practice of
arranged marriageВ…was having a setback
(Srivastava 9). After Murugan s move to the city to become a servant, he arranges his own
marriage. In addition to this, Murugan deserts his wife and takes another woman without any
compunction (Srivastava 9). Rukmani is in disbelief as she views marriage as a sacred covenant
which [binds two people] together in sun and in rain (Srivastava 9).

echocardiogram is a non invasive ultrasound test that shows an image of the inside of the heart

Anaesthesia and muscle relaxants reduce the seizure threshold and the risk of injuries from motor

The Biological Effects Of Cellular Respiration On...
Introduction Cellular respiration is a complex but fundamental process of life. This process is vital
to all living organisms, whether they are autotrophs or heterotrophs, plants or animals. All biotic
life requires their food to be converted into energy to carry out their basic functions and processes.
Cells use oxygen to transform a simple sugar like glucose into energy, such as Adenosine
Triphosphate(ATP). Glucose is a carbohydrate, which acts as a reactant just like oxygen and water.
The products yield carbon dioxide, water and ATP, which is the opposite for photosynthesis. Cellular
respirationcan be divided into three parts: glycolysis, citric acid cycle, and electron transport chain.
Many pollutants can disrupt this biological process and effect organisms and ecosystems. Dioxin is
a very toxic compound usually produced as a byproduct from industrial waste sometimes in the
form of pesticides or herbicide, which was used in Vietnam. TCDD is a commonly studied dioxin
that is a mixture of chemicals found in the environment. Studies have found that humans cannot
metabolize this mixture, which causes several different, harmful biological reactions. TCDD is a
direct side product of burning organic materials. It is also a persistent organic pollutant that inhibits
the mitochondria from supplying energy including ATP and NAD(P)H. This organelle is where
cellular respiration is synthesized in animals and humans. These toxins directly affect the electron
chain, which will

The New Model Intelligence Led Approach

within the criminal justice agencies, has been a lot. However, it has been the major key to making
an organization have structure, a mission to oblige by, as well reducing the crimerate effectively. In
this dissertation (meeting) a discussion of the new model intelligence led approach will be

The Epic Of Alexander Pope s The Rape Of The Lock
Mock epic is a narrative poem which aims at mockery and laughter by using almost all the
characteristic features of an epic but for a trivial subject. Alexander Pope s The Rape of the Lock
is a famous mock epic. In it, there is invocation to Muses, proposition of subject, battles,
supernatural machinery, journey on water, underworld journey, long speeches, feasts (coffee
house), Homeric similes and grand style but all for a simple family dispute instead of a national
struggle. The grand treatment of a low subject produces hilarious laughter and makes the story more
ridiculous.
Firstly, Paradise Lost is a long epic poem by John Milton begins with the proposition of
justification of God s way to man with nice invocation to the Muses. And another epic poem titled
The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser follows the same manner. The subject matters in both of
the epic poems are grand. Like the epic poems, the poem The Rape of the Lock opens with the
proposition of the subject matter and Pope s invocation to the Muses to help him compose the
literary art. Such a grand treatment of a trivial subject matter like the clipping of the lock of
Belinda provokes laughter when the poet says:
I sing this verse to Caryll, Muse! Is due:

considerable detail the armor and weaponry of the great Achilles, as well as the battlefield

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum s Art Collection
The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum s art collection blends history and culture to aesthetically
define a single individual: Isabella Stewart Gardner. From the Mosaic Floor: Medusa of the inner
courtyard, to The Coronation of Hebe (Paolo Veronese) on the ceiling of the third floor Veronese
Room, Gardner determined every inch of both the interior and exterior of the structure housing her
personal collection of masterpieces. This museum was specifically designed to resemble a 15th
century Venetian palazzo, inspired from the city that captured Gardner s heart and ultimate vision
of her legacy (Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum). Assisted by Renaissance revival architect,
Willard T. Sears, the palazzo like structure was realized in its full glory, albeit Renaissance
ornamentation had no logical place in early 20th century Boston, Massachusetts. However, Isabella
Stewart Gardners fascination with the Renaissance was not solely because the works and buildings
were visually pleasing. A palazzo, for a wealthy family, was a lasting symbol of status. Gardner s
choice to create a museum inspired by this Renaissance structure demonstrates how this
Renaissance mindset can be translated into her modern context when crafting her own legacy.
The exterior of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is drastically more modest than the interior. In
the same fashion as the traditional palazzos of the Renaissance, the masonry is smooth and
understated. The flat roof resembles that of the Palazzo

of non violent discussion and negotiation.
My Analysis: Throughout Mandela s mission, he drew inspiration from across the myriad of the
ideological spectrum. Inspired by Gandhi, Mandela and the Anti Apartheid mission discovered the
foundation for the Defiance Campaign, M Plan, and Programme of Action. When Mandela and the
ANCYL felt the need for stronger resistance they found a new influence in Pan African support and
Frantz Fanon armed resistance. Mandela and the Anti Apartheid movement represent the duality of
political struggles capturing the anger that fuels an armed resistance and the hope that drives a
pacifist movement.

Disneyland Vs Disneyland
Which amusement park do you prefer Disneyland or Six Flags Magic Mountain? Even though,
both of these amusement parks are very much enjoyable, everyone has a preference. While one
is labeled as the happiest place on earth, the other is just as fun, or is it? Disneyland and Six
Flags Magic Mountain are both filled with rides, food, and entertainment; however, I believe one
of these amusement parks does a little better job at making your experience unforgettable.
Disneyland offers awesome rides, delicious food, and breathtaking entertainment. I believe
Disneyland is true to its slogan and is the happiest place on earth because whenever I find myself
there I am always having a great time. The rides at Disneyland are so enjoyable and delightful;
however, most of their rides were created to accommodate infants and children, so many of them
are slow moving or digital. Nevertheless, while this does not worsen your experience, you do
sometimes miss out on that roller coasterthrill that you would feel on a typical ride. For example,
the rides that are slow moving or digital include It s a Small World, Buzz Lightyear Astro
Blasters, Pirates of the Caribbean, and so on. Disneyland s targeted guests are children and adults
of all ages. Disneyland has many rides that are accessible to infants and children, and many rides
that are targeted more toward teenagers and adults. Disneyland also offers plenty of entertainment
that is meant for really anyone such as their parades, live

Edward IV s Reign and Success Essay
Edward IV s Reign and Success Edward s reign was mainly stable and successful. He was the
first king to die financially solvent in over 200 years due mainly to his careful avoidance of
major foreign wars and by the end of his reign there was evident recovery of prosperity in the
southern counties. However, Edward died too early to ensure that his heir would succeed him
unchallenged. He had not created a collective commitment to the future of his dynasty that would
make his heir strong enough to survive a minority reign. Although this was his main failure, he did
not wholly succeed in all other actions through his reign. Edward s foreign policies appear to be
eminently successful. The treaty... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He dictated his council and rarely was opposed even by Parliament. His financial dependence on
Parliament was not too great; his only depended on them with expenditure. He had two steady
sources of revenue which were customs duties and royal estates. The introduction of the Land
revenue led a greater prominence of the chamber. His royal household now collected the taxes in
place of the Exchequer. He was seen as a financially capable businessman and was therefore able
to borrow loans easily from merchants in London. Although Edward was mainly successful with
his financial policies and his treatment of the nobility, he was in fact too reliant on the Duke of
Gloucester and Northumberland. This led to them becoming over mighty nobles, giving them the
opportunity to eventually depose Edward s heir from the throne. Although it was not obvious at
the time, this was a critical failure as it meant an undisputed succession was not ensured. Edward s
commercial policy was mainly successful. He promoted the development of the English merchant
marine, a new market for English trade and commerce. His treaty with Burgundy created a bigger
British export trade. The export of cloth doubled and the problem of piracy decreased. Also, the
treaty of Utrecht increased Hansiatic trade. Edward s only notable failure where trade was
concerned was his tendency to

Essay about How Does Nationalism Shape China s...
Nationalism cannot only aggravate ethnic relations within the state, but it can also spill over
borders and increase the likelihood of international conflict (Downs and Saunders, 1998/99:115).
Introduction Nationalism has become a major part of the Chinese Communist Party s agenda to
success and continued rule as it struggles to keep its legitimacy in China. Nationalism to an extent
also shapes China s international relations. This essay will first define what nationalism means for
China by providing some background information to explain its rise, as well as the role that the
national humiliation narrative plays in it. It will also discuss the role of the patriotic education
system and differentiate between state and popular... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

two main proposals to understanding nationalism. In the first, nationalism was an aspect of national

guffaws echo back by the moist cobblestone and bounce off to nothing but the warm body of the
dead on the bloody wooden table. In contrast to the sticky red is a shiny crown and a bubbling
matte bottle. As the cold breeze turns into a gale, the King picks up the bottle with sickly sweet
poison and pours down into his throat. Once upon a time, there was a young man who could
control temperatures of anything with his mind, but he never revealed his secret to anyone in
the village. He just wanted to be a normal person like everyone else and protect his quiet life.
Whenever there was a chance, he would go to the garden behind the village. Watching fields of
baby s breath dance with the lead of the cold breeze and waiting until every single of them is
changing into orange grabs are the things he like to do the most. He liked to stay in the garden
rather than helping his grandparents farm, but he would always use his ability to secretly support
the plantation. Day after day, the huge field of crops grew better and better even with no one but
two elderlies watching. In the beginning, everything went nice and smooth and two elderlies were

Examples Of Forbidden Love In A Midsummer Night s Dream
The Theme of Love in A Midsummer Night s Dream
Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind. And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.
Though she be but little, she is fierce! Love remains the dominant theme in A Midsummer Night s
Dream. Shakespeare utilizes the concepts of forbidden love and magic and throughout the play. An
example of forbidden love occurs when Hermia disobeys her father and elopes with Lysander,
going against Athenian Law. She deserts Demetrius, the man her father chose for her. Magic also
presents itself throughout the story, when the characters travel in the fairies forest. Shakespeare
utilizes various types of love in A Midsummer s Night Dream to support the theme of love.
At the beginning of the play, the author showcases forced love between Hippolyta and Theseus,
and Demetrius and Hermia (Pyros). Theseus says in Act I, I wooed thee with my sword, to
portray that he won her with his sword as in the battle to win her love, implying that she marries
him, only because he won a battle. Another example of forced love includes Hermia and
Demetrius. According to Athenian law, a daughter must obey her father at all costs, or risk being
killed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

derived as he, as well possessed. My love is more than his. My fortunes every way as fairly

the Cubist movement, was a participant in Europe s political discourse during most of the early
1900s. Picasso s Guernica, one of his most powerful political statements, was painted as an
immediate reaction to the Nazi s casual bombing practice on the Basque town of Guernicaduring the
Spanish Civil War. Guernica, a mural size canvas painted in blue, black, and white oil, shows
tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon individuals, particularly innocent civilians. Picasso
depicts turmoil, people and animals suffering, with building in disarray torn apart by violence and
mayhem. With Guernica, Picasso establishes his identity and his strength as an artist when
confronted with political authority and intolerable violence, especially in his native land.

Bartleby the Scrivener, Deeply Symbolic Essay examples
Bartleby the Scrivener, a Deeply Symbolic Work
Bartleby the Scrivener, is one of the most complicated stories Melville has ever written, perhaps
by any American writer of that period. It id a deep and symbolic work, its make you think of
every little detail differently. It makes you realize that a little detail actually make a difference
and give a meaning to the story analysis. The walls are controlling symbols of the story; in fact
some had said that it s a parable of walls. Melville tells us explicitly that certain prosaic facts are
indispensable to understand a story (Leo Marx 1970). One of the walls, which is part of sky light

The Pros And Cons Of Yogic Practices
Is Yogic practices different from normal exercises?
Yogic practices is not exercise in the sense in which the word exercise is commonly understood.
Both yogic practices and exercises have a common goal or objective, namely health protection and
promotion. However , the effect of yogic practices is not limited to this only. It is expected that
yogapractices should lead to a balanced personality.
Normal exercise routine is focused towards a certain goal, such as losing 10kg or increase push ups

What brings silence into our practice is making our yoga class a sacred place. But in these days

impermeability. That s disturbing the potential of allowing silence to enter into our practice. We
let ourselves get depleted and then use yoga to try to get us back to neutral. Instead of going
from negative to zero one must try to organize our lives to go from zero to positive. This requires

Physical Properties of Two Types of Solids

Maggie Liu
Abstract
The purpose of this lab is to study some of the physical properties of two types of solids ionic and
molecular. The samples used are sodium chloride (ionic) and camphor (molecular). The physical
properties studied are odour, hardness, melting point, solubility in water and solubility in 2
propanol. It is observed that some of the physical properties of sodium chloride are no odours,
hard, a high melting point, soluble in water and insoluble in 2 propanol; some of the physical
properties of camphor are a strong odour, soft, a low melting point, insoluble in water and soluble
in 2 propanol. A few conclusions can be drawn from these... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Noted the observations for each solid in both water and 2 propanol.
Observations
|Physical property |Sodium chloride |camphor |
|Odour |No odour |Strong (mint) |
|Hardness |hard |soft |
|Melting point |high |low |
|Solubility in water |soluble |insoluble |
|Solubility in 2 propanol |insoluble |soluble |
Sodium chloride does not have any odours, whereas camphor has a strong mint like smell. It is
found that ionic compounds usually do not have odours because they are solids and the particles
are all held tightly which makes the gas nearly impossible to be released into air and make the
smell, however, many molecular solids do have odours because their particles are not held very
tightly and there is space between the particles. Vapor or gas can be produced and released into air
which causes smell. Sodium chloride is harder than camphor.

American Revolution Loyalists
Only a tiny fraction of the books written on the American Revolution are devoted to the loyalists
the residents of the 13 colonies who chose to leave their homes rather than become citizens of the
new republic. Such a nation bound approach to the writing of American history implies that the
lives of those who left were not significant. Yet they were, and Maya Jasanoff, who teaches history
at Harvard, has provided a richly informative account of those who made the choice to embrace
imperial Britain. As earlier historians of the Revolution have pointed out, the loyalists tended to
have strong connections to the imperial administration, belong to the Anglican Church and possess
close business or family ties to Britain. But not all who left fitted... Show more content on

Near the end of the Paris peace negotiations that ended the war, a small but important amendment
was added to the resulting treaty that prohibited the British from carrying away any Negroes, or
other property. When he became aware of this proviso, Sir Guy Carleton, the commander of
British forces in North America, acted. Charged with the task of evacuating 20,000 troops and
35,000 loyalists from New York, he made securing the freedom of the black loyalists a priority.
He expedited the provision of documents establishing their freedom and hurried them onto a
fleet of ships headed for Nova Scotia. The speed of this sequence of events infuriated George
Washington. But Carleton responded that it was a matter of honor. The Negroes in question, he
explained, I found free when I arrived in New York, I had therefore no right . . . to prevent their

governor of Virginia, promised freedom to bondsmen who joined the British forces, as many as

risky decision to escape. Jasanoff refers to this as an emancipation, though she might better have
described it as a slave revolt, larger than any the Americas had yet to

Petrified Wood
2. Background on the mineralogical composition of petrified woods
A diverse suite of minerals and phases have been found in petrified woods from all over the world.
The common species found range from pure opal to pure quartz whereas others include calcite,
dolomite, pyrite, goethite, phosphates (apatite), laumontite, uraninite, sphalerite and organics
(Nowak et al., 2005). In coal deposits inundated by sea water (Yossifova et al., 2011), the woods
can be permineralized by quartz, plagioclase, muscovite, smectite, kaolinite and nacrite (a typical
hydrothermal mineral).
Cross polarized light shows that opal CT has very low interference colours, in contrast to the
brighter colours typical of chalcedony (Mustoe, 2008). However, polarizing microscope images
alone cannot resolve the degree of crystallinity of phases. For this, XRD and Raman microscopy
are required to clearly identify chalcedony, moganite, orthorhombic silica, opal CT, opal C and
quartz (HatipoДџlu and TГјrk, 2009). It is not easy to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

These results confirm the earlier conclusions of Heaney and Davis (1995) and Götze et al. (1998)

Gallipoli is the remarkable story of two Western Australian mates who are sent to Gallipoli in 1915.

This story brings back some harsh truths about warfare, and explains why so many naГЇve young
men joined up, only to suffer deaths well before their time.
The troops were headed for the Gallipoli peninsula and the Dardanelles Strait, in southern Turkey, to
attempt to take the peninsula. The war was between the Allies (mainly Britain, US, France, Russia,

even though he was underage, because he was a good athlete, and that s what the army needs . He
also felt it was Australia s war because Australia does everything hand in hand with Britain. Frank
felt that a war on the other side of the world had nothing to do with Australia, and he did not respect
any snobby British authority.
Probably the actual realisation of what they were getting themselves into was when Frank and
Archie were standing on a hill at sunset; listen to the anguished sounds of battle. Even more
horrifying for Frank was witnessing Snowy on his deathbed naГЇvely saying, I wonder why they

When the Anzacs were in Egypt, they thought that the Gypos were a bunch of thieves. The lecture

What Is Catch Me If You Can Film Techniques
In the film Catch Me If You Can, by Steven Spielberg, Carl Hanratty, is an FBI agent on the chase
for Frank Abagnale Jr. In this scene, he finds out Frank is hiding in a small town in France at a
factory writing himself cheques. He then convinces Frank to handcuff himself and turn himself into
the french officers. During this scene, Spielberg uses four main film techniques to create a theme
and moods. These techniques are, cinematography, editing, colour and lighting, and sound.
Spielberg uses these four techniques to create a mood and build suspense. The use of these
techniques links to the theme that Frank s actions will eventually have consequences because the
director is making the audience believe that Frank could get caught, meaning Frank s actions will
have consequences.
The first film technique spielberg successfully uses is cinematography. Specifically, he uses close
up shots on Frank and Carl s face during their conversation about whether Carl is telling the truth
and then swears on his daughter s life. During these close ups, there is a good use of camera
movement by zooming even further into their faces. The use of this technique gives a strong effect

During the late 14th century until about the 16th century, Italy and other European countries
underwent a time of rebirth of the Ancient Greek and Roman classics. This era was known as the
Renaissance. The citizens of Europe were surrounded by advancements in technology, music, and
culture. However, one of the most prevalent changes that is still in affect today is the newly

Perspective was important during the Italian Renaissance because it made artworks look more real
and three dimensional. Perspective was a technique in which an artist would use lines to establish a
foreground, middleground, and a background. In centuries past, many of the artists works would
look flat because they didn t use perspective. In the PietГЎ Mary looks farther away from the
audience than Jesus body does. At the same time, Jesus head takes a spot in the middleground of
the artwork. He is able to depict a Jesus foot to look like it is on top of or mixing with the dress
that Mary is wearing. This was important because in the past, many works of arts backgrounds
would all mix together to create a flat painting. In his sculpture, Michaelangelo uses perspective to
give a more realistic feeling to the artwork.
One of the most prominent developments in Michaelangelo s sculpture is his use of realism and
expression. In his sculpture, realism is shown through the creases of Mary s dress and veil and
the ways that the body s of the two subjects were molded. They were more 3 D and didn t look
flat; they showed more dimension than sculptures in the past had. At the same time, Michaelangelo
also used expression in both of the subjects. Mary looks like she is

Sexual Assault Prevention Essay
Sexual Assault Prevention
Sexual Assault Prevention
Every two minutes a woman is sexually assaulted in the United States (FBI, 2003). According to
the Federal Bureau of Investigation, sexual assault is the most under reported violent crime in
the United States. In 2005, the Armed Forces received 2,374 reports of alleged cases of sexual
assault involving its members. Of these figures, the Air Force received 584 reports. That is an
increase of 28 percent over the past year (DoD, 2005). The Air Force is concerned with the safety,
dignity, and well being of all its members. The Air Force does not tolerate sexual assault and has
implemented a comprehensive policy that reinforces prevention, response, and accountability.
It doesn t matter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Air Force is focusing on eliminating those barriers by providing both unrestricted and restricted
reporting. Unrestricted reporting is recommended for victims of sexual assault who desire medical
treatment, counseling, and an official investigation of the crime. Since June 2005, military victims
of sexual assault have been offered a restricted reporting option, which allows those who have been
sexually assaulted to receive medical treatment and support without automatically triggering a
criminal investigation.
In an effort to ensure victims receive consistency in support services provided, the Air Force has
instituted essential training tasks for first response groups, such as medical personnel, law
enforcement and chaplains. Furthermore, the Air Force has trained 201 permanent Sexual Assault
Response Coordinators (SARC) to be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Offenders can only
be held accountable for their actions if the victim reports the crime as unrestricted.
According to a 2000 Criminal Victimization Survey, only 16% of reported rapes result in prison
sentences. Furthermore, the closer the relationship between the victim and the offender the greater
the likelihood that law enforcement will not be told about the sexual assault. The Air Force has
been aggressively addressing this national problem. Military commanders have a variety of
punishment options for alleged offenders. The disposition in

Contraceptives Vs. Pills
Granted this form of contraceptive along with the condom has been one of the earliest
inventions that are still used to this day. Honestly, I don t ever think they would ever have a
100% contraceptive that would prevent a pregnancy or the ability to protect you form an STD.
My reasoning for this is due to if their is someone who still manage to get pregnant or infected
while using that magical product. Can easily then sue the inventor for false advertisement, I am
sure the company would not risk their business either. If you notice, even products who claim
that a product has a full affect, it would be a 99.9%. In case if by some reason it does not work
for that individual, they have that .1% of why it did t work for them. No pills, no condoms, no
spermicide, and it s far more effective than any birth controlcurrently on the market. In every test
of the product, the only failure rate out of 250 volunteers was due to an improper injection of the
polymer. Barring that one instance of error, the polymer has been 100% effective. No other form of
birth control can say that.

Notes On On Land And Water By Kyle Dean
Terrestrialization on Land or in Water
By Kyle Dean
Intro.
The movement to land by plants has been a point of great interest for many researchers. The
complexity of the situation is in the characterization of those traits that were most essential to the
viability on land, and whether those traits developed prior to terrestrialization or post
terrestrialization. This complexity stems from the long branch of phylogeny leading to
terrestrialization having an incomplete fossil record due to environmental changes throughout time.
The gold standard hypothesis on terrestrialization introduced by Bower is accepted in the scientific
community as the explanation for terrestrial plant diversification of plant orders and families. Bower
s hypothesis articulates, that the evolution of antithetic alternating life cycles was instrumental in
adapting to the terrestrial habitat. (Harholt et al., 2016) In other words the development of the free
living sporophyte and gametophyte was critical to a plants ability to live on land. This information
if taken only to mean the diversification of land plant orders and families is accepted by most
without question, for the alternating life cycle is imperative to suitability of land plants; however,
if Bower intended for his hypothesis to be inclusive of the primordial terrestrialization then his
hypothesis has encountered some criticism. Stebbins and Hill in 1980 conducted research that
concluded with the premise that unicellular charophytes invaded

London Research Paper
Have you ever wondered how London and all the beautiful buildings in London came to be?
Beginning with the main history of London, continuing with famous buildings and ending with
famous people from London, this paper will explain some of London s very interesting history.
The name of London came from the Celtic word Londinios, which means the place of the bold one
(Lambert). During the course of the fourth century, Roman empire began to collapse and
Christianity was introduced to the city, but some inhabitants were starting to leave from the city
because they did not wanted to be part of this religion ( Cody). Although this was the beginning of
how London started, there is more to be told about this city s history during the middle ages. When

The Tower of London is one of the world s most famous fortresses ( The london pass ). The Tower
of London served as a royal palace for the royal family until the 17th century. Also, during the
Middle ages, the Tower of London became a prison and a place of execution (Britannica).
Another famous building is the Westminster Abbey. The Westminster Abbey is a Gothic church
with a heritage site that is popular with many visitors ( London Pass ). Edward the confessor
established it as the home of the royal government and it has been the site of every coronation
and royal burial for close to 500 years, and draws thousands of visitors every year ( Rich). The
Eye of London is also another famous building. This building opened to the public in 2010 (
Lambert). Sponsors described such a feat as one of the most challenging and exciting construction
projects ever seen in the UK . It is also hoped for the Eye of London to become the symbol of
London at the turn of the millennium ( Quinn). Not only is London home of historically famous
buildings, but, also, was the home to famous

Industrial Process Vs Artisan
Industrial process Vs. Artisan process of creating comic books is the industrial process is created
collaboratively (assembly line) divided among writers, artist, inker, letterer, colorer and editor.

When one thinks of comics, who are the first names that come to mind? Many will tell you, Stan
Lee, Jack Kirby, Will Eisner, etc. They are indeed huge names in comics, but are they auteurs?
Auteur directly translates to artist, and in film, one can see the director s stamp based on their

God And The Kingdom Of God
Jesus came proclaiming the gospel of God and the Kingdom of God. But many of his disciples,
like John the Baptist, did not envision the Kingdom of God for themselves nor the Kingdom
miraculously coming from Heaven. The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand:
repent and believe in the gospel. (Mark 1:14 15, ESV.) The phrase Kingdom of Godis the
centerpiece of Jesusteachings and is found in his unique way of speaking about God s kingship.
The arrival of the Kingdom of God did not mean the end of the world or the destruction of Israel
s enemies. Jesus then said, The kingdom of God is not coming with the things that can be
observed; nor will they say, Look , here it is! Or There is is! For in fact, the kingdom of God is
among you. (Luke 17:20,21) The Kingdom of God was based upon inclusive solidarity of
human race. Ir is involved with the idea of covenant bringing together two parties by a solemn,
unbreakable oath. It is a spiritual place in the hearts of men and women and it will find its
fulfillment in the eventual rule of God and defeat all evil. Those people, who chose to belong to
God s kingdom and serve Him, are those who are destined to have eternal life in God s presence.
(Christian BibleSite) We know that this Kingdom of God is not with a man; it is something
within which man can live. It is the God s people in God s place under God s rule. It is the final
establishment of the new heavens and the new earth. One day the Pharisees

RenГ© Descartes Meditations On First Philosophy
RenГ© Descartes, a philosopher in the 17th century era, begins his book Meditations on First
Philosophy writing a letter to the Sorbonne. Later he talks about the basic principles of science. He
also was to be able to show how Christianity was also consistent with science. In other words, that
science and Christian faith were consistent with each other. With this being said, he had two main
points through his meditations. He wanted to show that knowledge, specifically scientific, lay in
the mind rather than the senses. Again, he also want to show that science and religion could go
together. He is able to do this through several meditations, but in this document only the first two
will be discussed. In the first meditation, Descartes begins by arguing the concept of... Show more

He states that he often has perceptions of real life, but when he is asleep. He believes he is
awake due to the realness of his surroundings when he is actually asleep. Therefore, he believes
there is no definite sign to tell if one is dreaming or awake. With this being said, he believed all
his perceptions could also be false when he was in a dream state. As I read this, I found it very
interesting. Dreaming can be a surreal location at times, and it is truly amazing how complex the
human brain is. I can definitely see how he comes to this conclusion, but due to scientific and
psychological advances this simply is not the case. Furthermore, Descartes begins to argue his own
statements. He explains that it could be argued the images that we see in the dream state can be
created by scenarios and situations from our everyday experiences. Although most of the things that

Bell Jar Figurative Language
In the passage, the character of Esther Greenwood represents the struggle of women trying to
hold their place in a modern, yet conservative society. Author Sylvia Plath uses the character of
Esther Greenwood and figurative language to portray the disarming role of society in the 1950s.
The Bell Jar revolves around Esther who is a wonderful student and an aspiring poet. She clearly
struggles with societies expectations which tell her to be both educated and a homemaker. The
dichotomies of her society leave Esther bitter and unable to decide a future for herself. Plath uses
Esther s point of view to reveal the internal struggle felt by many women, including herself, due to
the restraints of contemporary society. She holds herself to impossible... Show more content on

Esther thinks to herself, I felt like a racehorse in a world without racetracks or a champion
college footballer suddenly confronted by Wall Street and a business suit, his days of glory
shrunk to a little gold cup on his mantel with a date engraved on it like the date on a tombstone .
The imagery is astounding and morbid at the same time. The references to helplessness and
death are evident as Esther feels herself pushed and pulled in many directions, all that do not
have any basis. Her future lies in her getting good grades, going to a good college, but not to
pursue her dream as a poet, something she excels in, but rather to find a good man and discard
her years of effort in order to please him. This all leads to the fig tree which symbolizes all of the
potential Esther has as a woman. She can pick whichever path she wants, a wife an editor and
explorer, yet I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig tree, starving to death, just because I
couldn t make up my mind which of the figs I would choose . Esther is so torn between the
wants of society and those of her own that she is unable to decide. She doesn t want to disappoint
her mother so she keeps on agreeing with the pretentious fiancee Buddy Willard. Yet the words of
her magazine editor, a successful yet lonely older woman named Jay Cee, still haunt her as well,
telling her that learning another

Research Paper On Naruto
Everyday millions of people will take at least one selfie and post it to a social media site. Half of
the time these people will be within eyesight of an animal, do you ever wonder what they think
we are doing? Just imagine, what if your dog or cat have ever wondered what it would be life to
take a selfie. Well one animal did, Naruto the monkey picked up the camera of a photographer and
snapped a selfie. This led to a big controversy, people were arguing that the selfie copyright
belonged to Naruto, others said it belonged to the photographer, and lastly people said it belonged
in the public domain. Even though it s said the photo should go in the public domain, the
photographer should hold the monkey selfie copyright because Naruto is an animal and Naruto will
not benefit from owning the copyright. The copyright to the monkey selfie should go to David
Slater. Slater said that he spent about ВЈ2,000 on the trip where the incident, which got him the
monkey selfie, happened. Photographers take thousands of pictures hoping to capture one or more
photos that will bring them some income. Seeing as this photo became so famous, Slater lost

Difference Between Round And Square Donuts
Comparing the volumes of a round and square donut.
Which of these two donuts better fits in a dozen box?
Christina Tannous
Supervisor: Mr. Omar Rachmani
January 25, 2015
Everybody loves to have a donut every once in a while. It s a tasty desert that nobody can deny;
children all the way to adults love it. I am personally a huge donut lover! When I usually walk
through the mall I find different coffee shops selling square donuts, and not only round ones. This
is what sparked the idea in my head that there is a chance that the square donut can be economical
where it is a win win chance for both producers and consumers. I do want to prove that producing

While if the producers were to depend on producing round donuts, the donut box would not be
completely filled at the corners, leaving empty spaces at the corner and between two consecutive
donuts. The percentage increase in the amount of donut found per donut suggests as well that it is
better for the producers to make square donuts, which in this case benefits the consumer as well.
One thing that must be taken into consideration when finding the volume of a square donut is that
the corners of this donut are not perfectly edged, which means that even though it fits into a
rectangular box better than a round donut, there are still very minimal empty spaces that are not
covered.
Overall, my aim in this experiment is to prove how it will be efficient to produce a square donut
and depend on it, because it will be a new trend that everyone wants to try, there will be more
dough per donut, price change wouldn t be higher than that of a round donut since the diameter of
the circle and the length of the side of the square donut are the

Comparison Of A Rose For Emily And The Tell-Tale Heart
As conclusion, with able narrative and noteworthy images, both A Rose for Emily and The Tell
Tale Heart convey great horror to readers. William Faulkner creates gossip of townspeople to
exhibit the story in non chronological request. Edgar Allan Poe portrays the crazy murderer s
admission with flashback to make the story resemble a real occasion. Despite the fact that one story
s viewpoint is singular and the other is plural, and the arrangements of time are peaceful
extraordinary, both of the narrations make the story unreliable. The unreliability is of central
importance when the two authors keep readers be in tension. Also, Faulkner and Poe both utilize

crystal clear and so beautiful. You can see all the creatures swimming around in their
environments. Snorkeling and scuba diving would be great things to do at the beach, especially

  • 2. Dmitri Mendeleev Research Paper Ben Jensen Mr. Houston Chemistry 14 May 2014 Dmitri Mendeleev It is the function of science to discover the existence of a general reign of order in nature and to find the causes governing this order. And this refers in equal measure to the relations of man social and political and to the entire universe as a whole. This quote from Dmitri Mendeleev, a famous chemist from the mid 1800s, helps illustrate both his work as a chemist and his opinion about the importance of scientific research and education. Dmitri Mendeleev was an important chemist and influential scientist whose discovery of the periodic table helped contribute to society by creating a way for the elements to be categorized, allowing other scientists to easily study, identify,... Married twice, he had a combined total of six children. He was also presented several prestigious awards for his scientific achievements. In 1905, he was awarded the Copley Medal, the highest honor of the British Royal Society, granted membership to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and was very nearly awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. In 1955, element 101 was named Mendelevium in his honor. Mendeleev died on February 2, 1907, and was buried in St. Petersburg, but his legacy lives on. • 3. Indian Gaming Regulatory Act Case Study The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act was passed by the United States on October 17, 1988, to manage gaming on tribal lands. It provided the main framework by providing a legislative basis for operation of Indian gaming. It protected the right to game which encourages increases in revenue and economic development within tribes. It also ensured that the games were fair and honest. This law established the National Indian Gaming Commission, which is a independent federal regulatory agency within the Department of Interior. This commission is the only federal agency that is solely purposed to manage gambling, which sometimes involves other departments such as the U.S. Department of Justice. In my opinion, Indian gaming is positive and most likely... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most important of the Cs are communication and collaboration. Communication plays the most important role because two separate entities tend to always have different ways of handling government cases. They can easily misinterpret legislation because both do not have mutual understanding or even a good relationship to begin with. This results in lack of knowledge in areas related to Indian nations and passing of laws that unknowingly negatively impact tribal growth. This can be see in many situations today such as environmental policy that can negatively impact natural resources that Indian nations heavily depend on. Collaboration plays an important role because it is necessary when dealing with tribal cases that require specific expertise. The correct resources are required in striving to succeed with longterm legislative goals. Lawyers and political experts are necessary in forming a platform to make impactful decisions especially dealing with higher levels of courts within the U.S. Coalitions and interest groups also demonstrate this by collaborating multiple parties to increase backing to push for specific critical issues. One of the reasons that prevent the 4Cs from being part of the modern federal Indian relationship is the nature of the two party system. Ongoing elections and shifting of new positions often prevent the 4Cs because competing ideologies prevent change and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I felt that sandals should be associated with tropical vacations for all the rest of us, but that barbed wire represent hard life of people in those areas of Dominican Republic. I kept questioning myself who were the people who worn this sandals? Where they slaves that somebody made them wear barbed wire sandals so they can keep feeling hurt or only locals wore them as a part of some ritual? I finally realize that those sandals represent life in poverty and eagerness for better life. These sandals represent people who would be better off if their only problem was wearing this sandals. Their lives had much more pain than any foot hurt by barbed wire sandal. I had a mixed feelings while looking at those sandals, remembering my life while growing up in war destroyed country while my parents were trying to find ways to migrate from Yugoslavia and make my life better. Thank God they succeed, but there are still marks from barbed wire on our feet and pain is sometimes coming back. It s interesting that even among the women women had more power than others. Handmaids, despite not having more power than the Wives or Aunts these women hold power, their ovaries. Handmaids are women who capable of conceiving and are used to bare children. Handmaids, in my opinion, will be in the middle(middle class). The Land Of Opportunity Analysis America has long been viewed as a most interesting place, not composed of its own, but of people from around the world, and a place where one can achieve their dreams. It is notable, however, that America has also acquired the title The Land of Opportunity . So, gathering evidence from varying sources, such as olden newspaper articles to modern day books on the topic, one might begin to analyze how deserving America is of that title. So, is to such a place that has this type of economic safeguard any dream realizable? Evidently so Lastly, in video form, comes the modern day interpretation of the American Dream, from everyday people, in an economic situation similar to that of the environment in which Adams wrote his article, yet not as severe as that. It should first be noted that the concept Adams spoke of, gaining a more grounded sense of the world in times of economic hardship, is exactly what occurs in the video. Analyzed in the video, it was stated that in times of moderate crisis, people begin to change their beliefs, those being in this case their opinions of material wealth and how apparent such is in the American ... By reading and analyzing the authentic experiences Peter Skrzynecki and Sharon Liao wrote about I was able to refine my perception and collective knowledge of belonging and what it entails. My study of Migrant Hostels , Feliks Skrzynecki and A Very Lucky Daughter the two composers have brought my focus on a range of different circumstances revolving around the ideas of belonging in the respective hearts of both first and second generation migrants, capturing the occurrences they encounter with assimilating into a new land and culture as well as the disturbance this assimilation creates within the relationships of families and outsiders. According to Huang and Kleiner (2004) mergers and acquisitions have become the principal means by which companies have the opportunity to grow revenues due to factors such as gloabalisation, rapid technological changes, a long term bull market and strategic barriers to growth. Porter and Singh (2010) admit that mergers and acquisitionsplay an important role in reallocation of resources in an economy. Roll (1986) states that the hubris model indicates that over confident managers make wrong estimations about the value of the potential targets and as a consequence they decrease the value of their shareholders wealth when the acquisition is completed. The main objective of mergers and acquisitions is to increase market share and shareholder value by decreasing costs and implementing improved services (Nguyen and Kleiner 2003). Each organisation in this process targets the strengths and the capabilities of the other in order to improve its position in the market. Stallworthy and Kharbanda (1988) argue that one of the main objectives of mergers and acquisitions is the acquirer s diversification with minimum cost in order to be protected and be restructured in a possible crisis. Keenan and White (1982) mention that firms seek for synergies in order to diversify and reduce the possibility of bankruptcy, achieve a better fit between the talents of corporate managers and the resources at their disposals and simultaneously acquire a bigger market share. Moreover Moon (1976) remarks that many firms choose to spread the risks by branching out into other unrelated industries or trades. Furthermore, mergers and acquisitions give the opportunity to buyers to grow faster, to achieve larger scales of economies and profitability with an existed market share, to eliminate a competitor by acquiring it and complete effective ... • 11. Sassanian Rock Relief Essay The Sassanian rock relief of the Triumph of Shapur I at Naqsh e Rustam defines a major point in Sassanid history in which Shapur I defeated the Emperor Valerian in 257 A.D. After the First Roman War, Shapur I then went on to destroy the entire Roman Army in the Second Roman War during the early 250s A.D. This major event forms the basis of this rock relief, which shows the surrender of Emperor Valerian and Philip the Arab. This conquest is yet another example of the success of Shapur Ito defeat the Roman Empire, which became part of a public event showing the power of the king over his enemies: The mood between them is calm: the Roman stands straight, the king sits straight and they look each other in the face. Certainly, the interrelationship between the successions of Sassanid kings provides a context for these public presentations of high relief stone carvings, which would have also been a public event for those witnessing king Shapur I during this historical period. The investiture relief at Naqsb i Rustam of Ardashir I is yet another aspect of the public ceremony of royal triumphalism in the way that gods, such as Ahura Mazda, are shown giving the beribboned investiture ring to Ardashir I. Ardashir I s coronation as the King of Sassanid Empirein 224 B.C. reveals the god like qualities given to the king through the gift of kingship presented by Ahura Mazda. Naturally, this iconographic presentation of investiture was most likely part of a much larger public ceremony, which had become immortalized by this rock carving of the event: The installment of Ardashir as king of Persis is the subject of the relief at Naqsh i Radjab. • 12. Tradition vs. Modernity, Amy Kramer England and India never did understand one another. (Prasad 37) Undilute East had always been too much for the West; and soulful East always came lap dog fashion to the West, mutually asking to be not too little and not too much, but just right. (Prasad 37) The struggle of individuals caught between tradition and modernity, or between India and the west, is a very common theme in Indian literature. This struggle is evident in Nectar in a Sieve, as Rukmani often finds herself battling between her traditional views and opinions, and the various modern forces that seem to be taking over her life. Firstly, Rukmani comes to realize that none of her sons are going to follow in Nathan s footsteps and work on the land for a living. This causes Nathan to feel as if the children in whom he lives have forsaken him because it is traditional practice for the sons of a farmer to work alongside their father and take over working the land once their father passes on (Srivastava 38). Rukmani was brought up with the widespread practice of arranged marriage; however, with the sudden displacement of many village people into cities, the practice of arranged marriageВ…was having a setback (Srivastava 9). After Murugan s move to the city to become a servant, he arranges his own marriage. In addition to this, Murugan deserts his wife and takes another woman without any compunction (Srivastava 9). Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a medical treatment for severe mental illness in which a small, carefully controlled amount of electricity is introduced into the brain. This electrical stimulation, used in conjunction with anaesthesia and muscle relaxant medications, produces a mild generalised seizure or convulsion (Mankad et al 2010). The ECT was being administered in theatre in the general hospital. In advance of the treatment the clients vital signs were checked and it was confirmed that consent was given. The client was then transferred to theatre. Present in the room was the anaesthesiology team, ECT nurse, surgical nurse, psychiatric consultant, registrar, psychiatric nurse and student nurse. Under anaesthetic the client has reduced capacity to breathe hence oxygen is administered, pure oxygen also reduces the deleterious effects on memory. Anaesthesia and muscle relaxants reduce the seizure threshold and the risk of injuries from motor activity during the seizure (Fink 2009). • 14. The Biological Effects Of Cellular Respiration On... Introduction Cellular respiration is a complex but fundamental process of life. This process is vital to all living organisms, whether they are autotrophs or heterotrophs, plants or animals. All biotic life requires their food to be converted into energy to carry out their basic functions and processes. Cells use oxygen to transform a simple sugar like glucose into energy, such as Adenosine Triphosphate(ATP). Glucose is a carbohydrate, which acts as a reactant just like oxygen and water. The products yield carbon dioxide, water and ATP, which is the opposite for photosynthesis. Cellular respirationcan be divided into three parts: glycolysis, citric acid cycle, and electron transport chain. Many pollutants can disrupt this biological process and effect organisms and ecosystems. Dioxin is a very toxic compound usually produced as a byproduct from industrial waste sometimes in the form of pesticides or herbicide, which was used in Vietnam. TCDD is a commonly studied dioxin that is a mixture of chemicals found in the environment. Studies have found that humans cannot metabolize this mixture, which causes several different, harmful biological reactions. TCDD is a direct side product of burning organic materials. It is also a persistent organic pollutant that inhibits the mitochondria from supplying energy including ATP and NAD(P)H. This organelle is where cellular respiration is synthesized in animals and humans. These toxins directly affect the electron chain, which will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Epic Of Alexander Pope s The Rape Of The Lock Mock epic is a narrative poem which aims at mockery and laughter by using almost all the characteristic features of an epic but for a trivial subject. Alexander Pope s The Rape of the Lock is a famous mock epic. In it, there is invocation to Muses, proposition of subject, battles, supernatural machinery, journey on water, underworld journey, long speeches, feasts (coffee house), Homeric similes and grand style but all for a simple family dispute instead of a national struggle. The grand treatment of a low subject produces hilarious laughter and makes the story more ridiculous. Firstly, Paradise Lost is a long epic poem by John Milton begins with the proposition of justification of God s way to man with nice invocation to the Muses. And another epic poem titled The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser follows the same manner. The subject matters in both of the epic poems are grand. Like the epic poems, the poem The Rape of the Lock opens with the proposition of the subject matter and Pope s invocation to the Muses to help him compose the literary art. Such a grand treatment of a trivial subject matter like the clipping of the lock of Belinda provokes laughter when the poet says: I sing this verse to Caryll, Muse! Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum s Art Collection The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum s art collection blends history and culture to aesthetically define a single individual: Isabella Stewart Gardner. From the Mosaic Floor: Medusa of the inner courtyard, to The Coronation of Hebe (Paolo Veronese) on the ceiling of the third floor Veronese Room, Gardner determined every inch of both the interior and exterior of the structure housing her personal collection of masterpieces. This museum was specifically designed to resemble a 15th century Venetian palazzo, inspired from the city that captured Gardner s heart and ultimate vision of her legacy (Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum). Assisted by Renaissance revival architect, Willard T. Sears, the palazzo like structure was realized in its full glory, albeit Renaissance ornamentation had no logical place in early 20th century Boston, Massachusetts. However, Isabella Stewart Gardners fascination with the Renaissance was not solely because the works and buildings were visually pleasing. A palazzo, for a wealthy family, was a lasting symbol of status. Gardner s choice to create a museum inspired by this Renaissance structure demonstrates how this Renaissance mindset can be translated into her modern context when crafting her own legacy. The exterior of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is drastically more modest than the interior. But Carleton responded that it was a matter of honor. The Negroes in question, he explained, I found free when I arrived in New York, I had therefore no right . . . to prevent their going to any part of the world they thought proper. The priest has sent the guards to take care of her. As the little girl held tighter to the warm security of her mother s hand, together they watched the soldiers lead the screaming, struggling queen away. • 34. Petrified Wood 2. Background on the mineralogical composition of petrified woods A diverse suite of minerals and phases have been found in petrified woods from all over the world. The common species found range from pure opal to pure quartz whereas others include calcite, dolomite, pyrite, goethite, phosphates (apatite), laumontite, uraninite, sphalerite and organics (Nowak et al., 2005). In coal deposits inundated by sea water (Yossifova et al., 2011), the woods can be permineralized by quartz, plagioclase, muscovite, smectite, kaolinite and nacrite (a typical hydrothermal mineral). Cross polarized light shows that opal CT has very low interference colours, in contrast to the brighter colours typical of chalcedony (Mustoe, 2008). However, polarizing microscope images alone cannot resolve the degree of crystallinity of phases. For this, XRD and Raman microscopy are required to clearly identify chalcedony, moganite, orthorhombic silica, opal CT, opal C and quartz (HatipoДџlu and TГјrk, 2009). It is not easy to ... This story brings back some harsh truths about warfare, and explains why so many naГЇve young men joined up, only to suffer deaths well before their time. The troops were headed for the Gallipoli peninsula and the Dardanelles Strait, in southern Turkey, to attempt to take the peninsula. He also felt it was Australia s war because Australia does everything hand in hand with Britain. Frank felt that a war on the other side of the world had nothing to do with Australia, and he did not respect any snobby British authority. What Is Catch Me If You Can Film Techniques In the film Catch Me If You Can, by Steven Spielberg, Carl Hanratty, is an FBI agent on the chase for Frank Abagnale Jr. In this scene, he finds out Frank is hiding in a small town in France at a factory writing himself cheques. He then convinces Frank to handcuff himself and turn himself into the french officers. During this scene, Spielberg uses four main film techniques to create a theme and moods. These techniques are, cinematography, editing, colour and lighting, and sound. Spielberg uses these four techniques to create a mood and build suspense. The use of these techniques links to the theme that Frank s actions will eventually have consequences because the director is making the audience believe that Frank could get caught, meaning Frank s actions will have consequences. The first film technique spielberg successfully uses is cinematography. Specifically, he uses close up shots on Frank and Carl s face during their conversation about whether Carl is telling the truth and then swears on his daughter s life. During these close ups, there is a good use of camera movement by zooming even further into their faces. The use of this technique gives a strong effect on the audience by showing the seriousness and emotion in the characters faces. It also shows the tension and suspense in the room. This shows ... This era was known as the Renaissance. The citizens of Europe were surrounded by advancements in technology, music, and culture. However, one of the most prevalent changes that is still in affect today is the newly founded techniques in the arts. Artists began to think outside of the box, and they made some of the best paintings of their time. Perspective was important during the Italian Renaissance because it made artworks look more real and three dimensional. Perspective was a technique in which an artist would use lines to establish a foreground, middleground, and a background. In centuries past, many of the artists works would look flat because they didn t use perspective. In the PietГЎ Mary looks farther away from the audience than Jesus body does. At the same time, Jesus head takes a spot in the middleground of the artwork. He is able to depict a Jesus foot to look like it is on top of or mixing with the dress that Mary is wearing. In his sculpture, Michaelangelo uses perspective to give a more realistic feeling to the artwork. One of the most prominent developments in Michaelangelo s sculpture is his use of realism and expression. In his sculpture, realism is shown through the creases of Mary s dress and veil and the ways that the body s of the two subjects were molded. In an effort to ensure victims receive consistency in support services provided, the Air Force has instituted essential training tasks for first response groups, such as medical personnel, law enforcement and chaplains. Furthermore, the Air Force has trained 201 permanent Sexual Assault Response Coordinators (SARC) to be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. • 43. Notes On On Land And Water By Kyle Dean Terrestrialization on Land or in Water By Kyle Dean Intro. The movement to land by plants has been a point of great interest for many researchers. The complexity of the situation is in the characterization of those traits that were most essential to the viability on land, and whether those traits developed prior to terrestrialization or post terrestrialization. This complexity stems from the long branch of phylogeny leading to terrestrialization having an incomplete fossil record due to environmental changes throughout time. The gold standard hypothesis on terrestrialization introduced by Bower is accepted in the scientific community as the explanation for terrestrial plant diversification of plant orders and families. Bower s hypothesis articulates, that the evolution of antithetic alternating life cycles was instrumental in adapting to the terrestrial habitat. (Harholt et al., 2016) In other words the development of the free living sporophyte and gametophyte was critical to a plants ability to live on land. This information if taken only to mean the diversification of land plant orders and families is accepted by most without question, for the alternating life cycle is imperative to suitability of land plants; however, if Bower intended for his hypothesis to be inclusive of the primordial terrestrialization then his hypothesis has encountered some criticism.
