2. What is your gender?
• Of the 37 people that
answered our survey,
23 of them (62%)
were male. This is
helpful to us because
the target audience
of horror is
predominantly male.
3. How old are you?
• The majority (73%) of
our survey was
completed by 15-20
year olds. This is also
the target age of
horror films, so
assures us that we
have captured our
target audience.
4. Approximately how many Horror films
have you watched in the past year?
• We had a good spread for
this question, with 27%
having watched 10+
horror films in the last
year, and 30% watching 13 and 4-6. I feel it is a
good response, as we
have answers from avid
horror fans, and
occasional horror fans,
which will show diversity
in audience expectations.
5. Name the two most recent Horror
films that you have watched.
• This was one of our open questions, so we
had a lot of different answers, but also some
correlation. Some of the most popular films
were Orphan (Collet-Serra, 2009), Insidious 2
(Wan, 2013), Paranormal Activity (Peli, 2007)
and Woman in Black (Watkins, 2012). This is
good news for us as these are some of the
films we took influence, so they are clearly the
correct target audience for “Wakefield
Manor”.
6. Name three words you associate with the
working movie title 'Wakefield Manor'.
• This is another one of our open questions, and
again we got a lot of good responses. Some of
the most frequent words were “desolate”,
“spooky”, “creepy” and “old”. This is good as
this is the effect we wanted to have. However,
we also had a lot of answers that weren’t
what we were hoping for, like “wealth”, “rich”
and “pompous”.
7. Do you believe that flashbacks in a
horror film are effective?
• As we are using
flashbacks in our
horror opening, we
felt this was an
effective question to
test part of our
concept. Having
81% yes is a great
sign that our target
audience will like
part of our opening.
8. Does the sub-genre of Supernatural
Horror appeal to you?
• The results to this
question are very
good, as 81% of
people like the super
natural sub-genre.
This is good as it
confirms that the
answers we receive
will be appropriate
to our task, and not
just horror films in
general.
9. Does the concept of an abused woman with a young baby haunting
an abandoned house frighten you? What is your opinion?
• As this was our most open question, we got a lot
of blunt answers where people didn’t explain
their answers. Some responses were very good
though, for example “yes because it attacks the
threats on women, bringing horror close to
home” and “yes seems very sinister and relevant
to your location”. We also got a few responses
telling us our idea for the haunted house was
unoriginal, however, because we are only filming
the opening, the use of handicam and first person
sets us apart from existing films.
10. On a scale of 1-5, how much do jump
scares in Horror movies frighten you?
• Because we are
planning to use a
jump scare at the end
of our opening, this
was a useful question
to find out that 19%
of people find them
extremely effective,
and a total of 89%
rate them more than
average scariness.
