3. The Test
We found 100 people
suited to our
demographic and
psychographic
orientation. We used a
mixture of 50 men and
50 women as a way of
keeping the test fair.
We asked 5 specific
questions that would
give us an insight into
the type of films that
they enjoy. Further
questioning will occur if
the answers are open.
What is your favourite leisure
activity?
Do you prefer a night out with
friends or a night in watching films.
What do you think makes a good
crime thriller film?
Do you agree with stereotyping?
4. Question 1:
What is your favourite leisure activity?
Our results for this question were incredibly varied as we asked a wide
range of people in terms of age and gender. Nevertheless we narrowed
our activities down to four different types; Playing sports, Going out with
friends, Watching movies and other. Our „Other‟ category featured things
such as art, and D.I.Y and such miscellaneous activities. This category
featured about 14% of our answers. The sporting category gained 48%
of the vote, with 38% being male and 10% being female. The main
sports in this category were Football for males and Netball and Swimming
for females. This question has determined that our audience is active and
likes to be engaged therefore our film must have a challenge or some
sort of conflict for the main character to overcome. The „going out‟
category featured 27% of the entire vote with the overview being rather
even as 13% of the answers were male, whereas the remaining 14%
were female. As the vote was quite even we decided to ask a follow on
question in which we asked „ Where do you like going out to?‟ The main
answers were „Party‟, „Clubbing‟ and „shopping‟. These responses show
us that only 15% of our audience would choose going to the cinema as a
first choice, hence why we need to make the film appeal to the „non
cinema going audience‟ and the „DVD‟, audience.
5. Question 2:Do you prefer a night out with friends or
a night in watching films.
This question is very simple, yet it allows us to determine
whether the audience are more introverted of extraverted. This
gives us an idea of how to market our film opening as outgoing
people would prefer a much more exciting and expressive,
whereas the other side of our audience would require simpler
marketing and less flash. 54% of our audience preferred a night
out with friends, which were 25% male, and 29% female, this
means that women tend to be a bit more adventurous. The
category which prefers watching films, had 46% of people, this
tells us that less of our audience like a night in watching films,
however this does not affect us that much; in general it is very
50-50 which allows us to market in whatever way we want.
Furthermore, the fact that we have 46% of people preferring a
night in, allows us to market DVD sales in a completely different
way.
6. Question 3:What do you think makes a good
crime thriller film?
This type of question caused a few problems as it was difficult to put it
into categories due to the amount of things that people had to say about
films. However, we wrote out a general synopsis of peoples opinions. The
main thing that a wide range of people said was ; “ there must be action
and suspense”. The mention of suspense was key throughout all the
interviews, as many people stated that the idea of being on the edge of
your seat the entire time is a lot more important than well built men
fighting. Another popular opinion was that there should be “some sort of
conflict to over come”. We as project directors agree heavily with this as
much of the appeal of thrillers lays in the struggle for an end goal. Due
to the fact that this question had such interesting answers we decided to
ask a very open question of,‟ „What is your favourite thriller film?‟, The
answers from the older part of the audience; 22-25, year olds were films
such as “Pulp Fiction”, “Reservoir Dogs” and such films. The younger
audience proffered film such as “Kidulthood”, and “Ill manors”. This
question showed us that we need to make our film similar to these types
of films.
7. Question 4: Do you agree with stereotyping?
We asked this question purely because of the idea for our film; as
we aim to challenge the stereotype which links the black
community with crime, especially in urban UK. The answers to
this were quite clear as 82% of people answered „No‟ whereas the
rest answered „Yes, there is truth behind it‟. This showed us that
the idea of our film would be much wider accepted amongst the
audience due to the idea of a middle-class white man being
accosted with crime. A further question we asked was “What do
you believe to be the cause of stereotyping?” 82% of people
believed that the media is the main cause of stereotyping, due to
the fact that they pick stories mainly relating to a certain group of
people.
8. Conclusion
Due to all the results gathered we established that, our audience
are quite intelligent out going people. They are representative of
the current generation. The current generation needs to be
indulged and constantly challenged, hence why the films they watch
must be quite complicated in order to entertain the public. We need
to create a complex scenario and a complex character in order to
acquire a following.
