Core Values Of Civilization
Since the beginning of time people have been in awe at the formation of civilization. Books have been
written, articles have been published, and even Sid Meier created the video game Civilization
surrounding this concept. In the game, players are tasked with not only establishing and maintaining a
civilization but as well as determining the core values and characteristics of the civilization in
question. The core values of civilization are the use of tools and technology for life enhancement,
social and political organization, and an agreed upon settlement and language. The use of tools and
technology is one of the basic characteristics of civilization in that it allows the civilization the better
itself. A common representation in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the earliest Indian civilization technology allowed the massive civilization of over 100,000 people
to live together through the use of sewage canals to transport waste from the houses to larger canals.
This concept has been used even in modern times. Technology allowed civilizations to not only better
themselves but establish a legacy for the civilization to follow and last even until today. With every
establishment and group there must be a sense of organization both political and social. Just as school
clubs have officers, civilizations have leaders that spearhead the group. In the Stone Age, tribal leaders
led the group from place to place. This nomadic lifestyle relied on experience to guide the search for
food. Once settling into an agricultural lifestyle, social classes began to form based on success
harvests and land ownership. In Mesopotamian culture, organization was built not only around social
hierarchy with famous rulers being Sargon the Great and Hammurabi but religiously as pyramids
known as Ziggurats were built to worship and sacrifice to the Gods. The greatest implementation of
organization is found in ancient Egypt with not only the society being structured with the pharaoh
ruling the nation and lower levels of aristocracy but with the emphasis being focused on religious
efforts. In Egypt, the pharaoh was not only

Personal Narrative-My Ackerman 3 Place
The warm Florida heat beats my shoulders, and sweat drips down my spine. Large touristgroups

families swarming the sides of the streets, a rush of impatience shoots up myspine. The fragrance of
kettlecorn wafted down the street. Flavorless saliva fills my mouth, andmy eyes devour the passing
cart. Cameras flash at the families dolled up for a memorable familyphoto. A miraculous moment

The stone remains cold from decades of freezing winter nights as it sat neglected andunwanted. The
couches is decorated in a faded flaming pattern of roses. The musty smell continues into the library.
Shelves of forgotten novels line the fourwalls, and a large window is strategically placed between two
of the shelves. The lights hangingfrom the ceiling are dimmed, and the melodic ringing of wind could
be heard. Bodies crowdtogether in the small room, and all heads gaze at one single item. The
television growls awarning, but it is set up in the form of a welcome to the hotel. Above the shelves sit
manyknickknacks: a beat up camera, adusty music box, a rickety old fortune telling machine, andeven
a vintage girl s doll sits on the wall with beady eyes staring down at me. I gaze at my oldfriends. Their
presence adds a hype to the idea of what awaits. The television blanks out and thefamiliar spike in my

rumbling of voices, when a bright light blinds my vision for a quicksecond. A heated breeze flocks
into the room from the shadowy corridor. The empty smell of steam surrounds, and it caresses my

me. The concrete floorchanges into a steel bridge. Over the railing, the boilers cascade down to the

Theseus And Palamon
Theseus, the leader of Athens, is going down a road and he sees four women crying on their knees. He
asks them why they are crying and they say that their husbands were killed at the siege of Thebes and
Creon, ruler of Thebes, would not let their husband s remains be recovered from the field (912 951).
He heard this and was so emotionally moved that he decided to march on Thebes and take back their
bodies. He lead his army to Thebes and captured Thebes. After the battle he saw two men from Thebes
who were barely alive named Arcite and Palamon. Theseus took them to his tent and had them healed
but they were confined to a prison in Athens after Theseus withdrew from Thebes. While in the tower
Palamon was pacing around his cell and he saw Emelye

Notes On Parabolic Trough Collector Tube
Parabolic trough collector tube I. Introduction General information Nowadays the energy consumption
is on such high level that scientists all over the world are looking for other solution. The greenhouse
effect is becoming more and more disturbing effect and some steps need to be taken to at least prevent
some of damages which it may cause. First of all, I will try to explain what parabolic trough collector
is. It is one of the types of solar thermal collectors which is straight in one dimension and curved as a
parabola in the other. As you can see in the picture 1. the whole device can be divided into following
parts: parabolic reflective mirror, linear receiver tube or heat collection element, steel support
structure/frame and a single axis drive mechanism. Parabolic trough solar field consists of hundreds or
even hundreds of hundreds of solar collector located parallel through the field. Every single collector
assembly is an independently tracking subsystem so that it makes the whole system more efficient.
picture 1 A parabolic solar collector assembly Parabolic trough collectors need to be designed as
simple as possible, not to generate extra costs, easy to assembly which also means they can be
transported in sections to ensure accurate parabola with high rigidity and to lengthen the field to its
maximum (which can differ from several meters to over 150 meters). The objectives of parabolic
collectors are to explain why concentration is important and what

Guilt and Shame in Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter
Guilt and shame haunt all three of the main characters in The Scarlet Letter, but how they each handle
their sin will change their lives forever. Hester Prynne s guilt is publicly exploited. She has to live
with her shame for the rest of her life by wearing a scarlet letter on the breast of her gown. Arthur
Dimmesdale, on the other hand, is just as guilty of adultery as Hester, but he allows his guilt to remain
a secret. Instead of telling the people of his vile sin, the Reverend allows it to eat away at his rotting
soul. The shame of what he has done slowly kills him. The last sinner in this guilty trio is Rodger
Chillingworth. This evil man not only hides his true identity as Hester s husband, but also mentally

However, Hester and Arthur are not the only people in The Scarlet Letter guilty of a wicked sin.
Roger Chillingworth is a vile man who hides his disgrace of having a disloyal wife and finds pleasure
in tormenting the poor Arthur Dimmesdale. When he comes to town at the beginning of The Scarlet
Letter, Chillingworth makes Hester promise not to tell anyone that he is her real husband. Breath not,
to any human soul, that thou didst ever call me husband! ... because I will not encounter the dishonor
that besmirches the husband of a faithless woman... (Hawthorne 52 53).
Chillingworth will not bear the shame in regards to his unfaithful wife, nor be burdened with
supporting and providing for her. He is truly a cruel and twisted man. This unfaithfulness to his wife is
not his only shame; he also is responsible for the daily, mental torture of Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale. She
doubted not, that the continual presence of Roger Chillingworth, the secret poison of his malignity,
infecting all the air about him, and his authorized interference, as a physician, with the minister s
physical and spiritual infirmities, that these bad opportunities had been turned into a cruel purpose

Wickedly, Chillingworth eats away at the Reverend s very being, always searching Arthur s mind for a
hint at his suspected, adulterous transgression. Rodger Chillingworth enjoys torturing the sickly man

Random Walk Theory And Behavioral Finance Theory
CHAPTER TWO: LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 Introduction This chapter will address theories relevant to the behavior of financial markets and
specifically stock prices movement on release of new information into the market, followed by the
determinants of stock price, international and local empirical evidence and finally a summary of the
chapter.
2.2 Theoretical Review
This section will review the theories that will guide the study and their relevance to the study. The
theories to be reviewed include; Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH), Random Walk Theory and
Behavioral Finance Theory.
2.2.1 Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH)

behavioral finance is the study of how psychology affects financial decision making processes and
financial markets. Sewell (2007) defined it as the study of the influence of psychology on the behavior
of financial practitioners and the subsequent effect on markets. It is of interest because it helps explain
why and how markets might be inefficient. Behavioral finance is an attempt to explain and increase
understanding of the reasoning patterns of investors, including the emotional processes involved and
the degree to which they influence the decision making process (Nyamolo,

Diversity In Literature
On October 18 I attended Dr. Ramona s star lecture Justice for All. Dr. Ramona discussed how justice
plays a role in children and young adult literature. She shows how important it is to not only show
differsity in books but also how important it is to make sure that everyone can read and has access to
books. She spoke on how importance of main characters that have similar backgrounds am you, but
also to be able to see people with different backgrounds doing the same everyday activities as you.
In this paper, I will argue that having different cultures represented in children s books is an important
part of children s literature. I will argue this by showing how it influences our views, and opens our

that everyone goes through similar things, and no one is better than anyone else. Diverse characters in
children s literature have been used for many years to introduce children to a variety of cultures and

with it, and it allows them to have a better understanding of other cultures, and races. Showing

Analysis Of Poem Facing It By Yusef Komunyakaa
War is one of the most controversial topics in today s society. However, because poetry tends to focus
on the experiences of the author, it is quite widespread. Grief, fear, and pain are some of the most
prevalent emotions in literature. In his poem, Facing It, Yusef Komunyakaa tells his experience with
war and how it has affected him. The poem begins with the author experiencing a loss of identity as he
is at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Then, he experiences nostalgia whilst reminiscing his past.
Lastly, he experiences flashbacks that deter his ability to distinguish the past from the present.
Komunyakaa wastes no time in loading his poem with themes. He touches on grief, war, gaining
control, acceptance, and sentimentality. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This sets the tone because it represents the process of grief. However, over time, they feel emotions
from anger to depression, to acceptance, etc. In these stages, emotions and memories catch up to them
forcing them to release their emotions. The author also uses stones as a symbol of strength and
courage. The line, I m stone, translates to I m strong or I m brave. In the line, ...the stone lets me go,
the author uses personification by giving life to the stone. It means that the stone or bravery is no
longer weighing on the author. In other words, the author no longer feels obligated to suppress his
emotions. The line, He s lost his right arm / inside the stone., translates to He s lost his right arm while
being brave, in reference to service in the Vietnam war. Lastly, the author uses methods to produce a
description that paints an image in the reader s mind. The lines, The sky. A plane in the sky. / A white
vet s image floats/ closer to me, then his pale eyes/ look through mine. /, puts the reader in the author s
position.
The poets use of form helped build the theme of the poem. Komunyakaa uses open form, a structure
that follows no guidelines, in the poem. Specifically, he uses free verse this form consists of lines that
have irregular meter, no stanzas, and no rhyme. The author included both stressed and unstressed
syllables, as well as many feet in the lines of the poem. This connects to the theme

The Dieppe Raid Essay
The Dieppe Raid
#65279; At dawn of 19th August 1942, six thousand and one hundred Allied soldiers, of whom
roughly five thousand were Canadians, landed at the French port of Dieppe in their first major test of
the defence of the German held coastline of Europe since Dunkirk. A combination of over rigid
planning, inadequate communication; lack of supporting firepower; and in the final hour before the
raid, absolute bad luck inflicted on the Allies made the Dieppe raid one of their worst defeats in World
War Two.
The codename given to the operation was Jubilee and its aim was to capture Dieppe to provide the

A fairly considerable assault fleet was being built up, and although
Combined Operations Headquarters (C.O.H.Q) had experience of small operations employing infantry
landing ships and assault and mechanized landing craft, there were now available also tank landing

handling a fleet of all these types in action. At this point the planning for the raid seemed a purely
British conception without any argument form other Allied force Commanders (Robertson, 72). For
the main assault force, C.O.H.Q called upon the services of the 2nd Canadian Division, under the
command of Major General John Hamilton Roberts. The Canadian government knew its men were
frustrated and demoralized by inactivity, pressured the British government to send them into action at

phase the original outline plan was materially altered. The most important change was the mistake of
eliminating the heavy air bombardment. At the same time it was agreed that briefing of the plan

Leo Fender s Major Accomplishments
On August 10,1909 in Anaheim, California an amazing soon to be mechanic and founder of one of the
world s most recognizable guitar companies was born Clarence Leonidas Fender, better known as Leo
Fender.
The funny thing is that Leo Fender the founder of the world s most recognizable guitar company who
made guitars for a living never learned to play the guitar, he was a mechanic and a saxophonist.
Fender started his electronic hobby in his early teens. It all started when his uncle mailed him a box. It
contained a car battery and broken radio parts. Not knowing what to do with them, Leo set off to Santa
Maria, California to visit his uncle s mechanic shop. When Leo entered the shop, he was fascinated

With Kauffman s experience and Fender s love for mechanics, he was convinced they would make a
great team. After a long conversation, Fender convinced Kauffman to team up with him. Together,
they started the K F Manufacturing Corporation . There they built and designed Hawaiian guitars and
amplifiers.
Their greatest success was in 1948 when they created the Fender Broadcaster. It was the first mass
produced solid body electric guitar made, which was renamed the Fender Telecaster in 1950.
Three years later (1951), he made the Fender Precision Bass. It is a solid body, four stringed bass that
is outfitted with a single split coil humbucking pickup and 20 fret neck. This set the trend for most
electric bass guitars.
Three years after the Precision Bass (1954), he made the Fender Stratocaster, which is still one of the
world s most recognizable electric guitars. It is a double cutaway guitar, with an extended top horn

Influences On Victorian Gothic Literature
Influences on Victorian gothic literature; religion, psychology, science and spirituality.
Many great authors such as Mary Shelley and Bram Stoker indulged in the world of the supernatural
with gothic novels such as Dracula and Frankenstein. However the origins of such tales and the
Victorian obsession with the paranormal are not commonly explored. The gothic genre in fact dates
back as far as 1765. The classic English gothic novel began with the author Horace Walpole and his
novel, The Castle of Otranto: A Gothic Story. Walpole claimed that he had found an ancient
manuscript which he then translated, thus creating his story. However, from what seems to be a
recurring theme in Victorian spiritualism, this also was revealed as being false. ... Show more content

There is a clear divide within the gothic genre which develops the perception of the church and
religion during the Victorian period. On one hand many gothic novels view the church as an evil
which corrupts society, whereas on the other hand religion and symbolism are the bringers of peace
and eradicators of evil. For example within Bram Stoker s Dracula, the cross of the Christian faith is
seen to drive away evil spirits and even Vampires. This portrays the Christian faith as a saviour of
man, showing the willpower of God. Yet in Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, God s creation is questioned
when man essentially takes life into his own hands, in the form of Victor Frankenstein creating the
monster. Both sides of the argument are controversial, forcing gothic literature into genre which
continues to cause controversy today. Although gothic literature and the church seem be inherently
different, there are some featured similarities. Both the church and gothic fiction depend upon society
to drive forwards their success. The gothic feeds upon the confusion of society, and at the same time
the church is fuelled by the idea of safety from the supernatural. The church is in fact utilised in many
gothic novels. For instance the church is a symbol for sanctuary, peace and rituals, all are common
themes of a gothic novel. It is evident that both do not only depend upon society, but also upon one
another for

Literary Analysis Of Blackberry Picking, By Seamus Heaney
In life, people experience loss. Loss of a friend, a family member, or a significant other. Even though
we don t always recognize it, death is inevitable. The loss that people experience may influence how
they remember things and see the world. Seamus Heaney uses the speaker in the poem to show one
way of dealing with death is to accept it. The nostalgic views of the speaker in the poem shows the
speakers remembrance of picking the blackberries and even though the berries would rot too soon, the
good memories of picking the berries would always outweigh the bad of them rotting. In Blackberry
Picking , Seamus Heaney utilizes colorfully yet contrasting imagery, diction and structure to suggest
that death is inevitable and loss isn t always the easiest thing to accept, but sometimes, that is the best
way to handle it.
First, The contrasting imagery of the poem represents life and death. At first, just one, a glossy purple
clot among others, red, green, hard as a knot. the speaker uses the ripeness of a berry to represent a
life. The red and green berries description of the bessies suggest they are not ready yet. I interpreted
the berries to also represent the end of a pregnancy, where the mother is almost ready to give birth, but
not quite yet. The glossy purple clot represents the berry finally being ready to be picked. This could
also represent the actual birth of the baby. Later in the poem Heaney describes the berries having A rat
grey fungus (19) and later describes the berries saying that The fruit fermented, the sweet flesh would
turn sour. (21) I interpreted this imagery as representing death. As people get older, their hair often
turns gray. Also, the fruit fermenting may represent the actual final death as the fruit rots and no
longer lives. The contrasting imagery of the beginning and end of the very may very well represent the
life and death of a person. As we go through life we begin as new, small, and tiny. When we age, we
often become wrinkled and the aging shows not only with skin, but as well as the hair as stated before.
As we grow older our interpretation of the world goes from pretty bright colors to dull, boring ones.
Heaney s use of the imagery shows the audience that good things

The Link Between Omega-3 And Depression
What is Omega 3?
Over the last two centuries, expansion in large scale industrialisation and western populations has
been associated with diet changes; Australians now consuming less omega 3 (Black Dog Institute,
2012).
Omega 3, a polyunsaturated fatty acid, has various forms; Alpha Linolenic acid (ALA),
Docosahexanoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). DHA and EPA are essential fatty acids
meaning that our bodies are unable to endogenously synthesise them, leading us to source omega 3
enriched foods.
Link Between Omega 3 and Depression
The protective factor of omega 3 against cancer, heart disease and diabetes is well known but it is also
highly effective in preventing and managing depression.
Raeder, Steen, Vollset, and Bjelland s (2006) experimental study demonstrated that subjects who
regularly consumed cod liver oil, rich in omega 3, were 30% less likely to develop depressive
symptoms; however a causal link could not be made. A recent clinical trial discovered that omega 3
might improve mood in already depressed individuals (Hallahan, Hibbeln, Davis, Garland, 2007). The
trial reported that omega 3 supplementation achieved substantial reductions in surrogate markers of
suicidal behaviours and increases in wellbeing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Count the Costs is a collaborative project between a range of organisations that, while representing a
diverse range of expertise and viewpoints, share a desire to reduce the unintended costs of the war on
drugs. The Count the Costs project aims to highlight the negative impacts of the war on drugs in seven
key policy areas: Development and Security; Public health; Human Rights; Stigma and
Discrimination; Crime; The Environment; and Economics. The project calls upon world leaders and
UN agencies to quantify the unintended negative consequences of the current approach to drugs, and
assess the potential costs and benefits of alternative approaches. (Count the Costs, 2012)
Outlining the Problem
In 2008, the Executive Director of UNODC, Antonio Maria Costa, affirmed there is indeed a spirit of
reform in the air, to make the conventions fit for purpose and adapt them to the reality on the ground
that is considerably different to the time they were drafted. With the multilateral machinery to adapt
the conventions already available, all we need is: first, a renewed commitment to the principles of
multilateralism and shared responsibility; second, a commitment to base our reform on empirical
evidence and not ideology; and thirdly, to put in place concrete actions that support the above, going
beyond mere rhetoric and pronouncement . (UNODC, 2008)

Persuasive Essay On Draft Busts
Xavier Henry, Daniel Orton, Byron Mullens, Tyrus Thomas, Javaris Crittenton, Greg Oden. What s in
common for all of these players? They re all one and done nba draft busts. All are now either in the d
league or free agency (not signed to a team, no salary). I believe that being a one and done athlete is
detrimental to the athlete s education, and future.
The one and done rule forces players to have at least one year in college, than being able to apply for
the draft. This rule was created in 2006 in order for teams to have less high school busts (example:
Kwame Brown. Was drafted number one by the washington wizards, and ended his career averaging
only 6.6 points per game, and 5.5 rebounds), and get more scouting reports per player. ... Show more

They will make enough money from just playing. And you don t really need a 4.0 GPA if you re going
to play basketball. But many things can go wrong. In Bobby Hurley s case, he was drafted in the first
round, but a couple of weeks later he got in a severe car crash that led him to having collapsed lungs,
and fractured bones, a torn tendon, and broken ribs (according to the Associated Press). And in Jay
Williams case he got in a motorcycle accident and according to a New York Times profile, the bike
crash left Williams with a total knee dislocation, torn ligaments, a dislocated pelvis, a torn nerve, a
severed artery, and more. Both these players had bright futures but were stopped by injuries. They
both played in the d league later, which is an incredible success, but they only got about $40 a game,
and they had to go get average jobs. So if you re drafted, it s not an automatic income, you could be
laid off or released if you can t continue to play at the pro level.
The one and done rule may be better than allowing high schoolers to go into the nba draft, but it is still
full of holes and mistakes. If people changed the rule, to having to play two years of college basketball
(or more). It could benefit many people; the draftees, and the franchises. It could allow athletes to
grow, and improve in the game of basketball. As well as allow the scouts to get better information on

The World s Tallest Skyscraper And Man Made Islands
Intro
Dubai is the largest city in the United Arab Emirates and quite possibly the most famous of all Arabian
metropolises. This fame has arisen from the city s great oil wealth; from the massive construction
projects that have resulted including the world s tallest skyscraper and man made islands; from the
reputation for excess among Dubai s young and wealthy; and from the large numbers of expats
attracted to Dubai by the prospect of sharing in the city s prosperity.

The oil and gas industry is well paid. Major employers in this sector are ENOC and Schlumberger.
Aviation and aerospace is another large industry requiring skilled workers. Emirates, the official
airline of Dubai, is a major employer for expat pilots and flights staff, as well as supporting industries.
Dubai is currently developing the infrastructure to go to Mars, so this area is really booming. This
industry is particularly welcoming to bilingual or trilingual workers due to the wide variety of people
coming through the region.
Due to the large number of families living in Dubai, education is a booming sector. There are over 100
private schools in Dubai, with more opening every year to meet demand. Teachers and administrators
make much more than in their home countries, and benefits often include free education for children.
Some prominent private schools include GEMS schools (both British and American curriculum),

Fellowship Of The Ring Book Analysis
J.R. R. Tolkien s classic novel The Fellowship of the Ring was made into a film in 2001 and directed
by Peter Jackson. This essay will be examining this specific film through a worldview perspective. For
the purposes of this essay, worldview will be defined as a perceptual framework . (The Transforming
Vision, pg. 17) Worldviews can be specific to a single person, or generalized to a group of people. The
worldview expressed in this essay through examples from The Fellowship of the Ring will come from
the theme of Creation.
This theme of Creation is correlated with the creation of the universe by God, as written in the book of
Genesis. God created the heavens and the earth before Jesus was born; before salvation ever occurred.
Similarly, The Fellowship of the Ring opens with a narrative explaining what the One Ring was and
its importance to the rest of the story. The film does not begin with Frodo saving the day, but rather the
history that laid the foundation for his journey to happen. The ring was forged in the fires of Orodruin
by the Dark Lord Sauron after he convinced the elven smiths of Eregoin to forge the Rings of Power.
Although God is nowhere near the same as Sauron, both created something specific to bring glory to
themselves: God made the world, Sauron made a ring. The difference is that God had a holy and
righteous reason for creating, while Sauron did it for evil and selfish purposes. God was able to speak
the earth into existence (Genesis 1:3), but Sauron had

Primate Evolution
Primate Taxonomy Primate Taxonomy Introduction This first lecture is designed to introduce the
primate order in terms of its classification and to familiarise you with the animals so that the rest of
the course makes some sort of sense. I will cover a working definition of what makes a primate, give
you a general classification scheme, describe the major features that identify the groups within the
classification and discuss some of the controversial areas of the classification. I shall treat the
taxonomy as a synonym for classification which seems to be its commonest current usage, although
you should be aware that some people consider taxonomy to be more about the principles behind the
classification than the classification itself. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Figure 6 shows a selection of mammalian skulls. The primate skulls are the two on the right and as
you can see, they have relatively short snouts. Obviously there is a huge amount of variation in gross
skull shape across the mammalian class, but certainly, on average, primate skulls tend to be short.
Elaboration of the visual apparatus, with the development of varying degrees of binocular vision.
Orbits ringed with bone. Figure 6 also shows the characteristic morphology of the primate orbit. The
eyes face forward for binoccular region, the eyes tend to be quite large, and the orbit is either a fully
enclosed cup (as in the chimp in figure 6) or a lateral post orbital bar (as in the aye aye). In most other
mammals (for example the bear and kangaroo), the eye is simply plastered onto the side of the skull
and held in place by soft tissue. Page 6 of 21 Primate Taxonomy Reduction of the olfactory
apparatus The reduction in the size of the snout and the increased reliance on vision has also led to a
relative reduction in the olfactory apparatus compared to many other mammals. This is again apparent
from figure 6 and is associated with the reduction in size of the snout. Loss of certain elements of the
primitive mammalian dentition. Preservation of a simple

Diversity flourished in the performing arts as well as in music, literature, and art. By the time the
novels, poetry, and dramas of the Harlem Renaissance were being recognized, African American
music had already gained fame worldwide. Jazz and blues provided the background, the spirit, and the
style for the achievements of the period s literary and visual artists (Howes 81). In every movement
there are those who are called front runners or foundation layers. These individuals pave the way for
others to follow and so it was with the Halrem Renaissance. Contrary to popular belief, the Harlem
Renaissance did not emerge out of a literary and cultural wasteland (Brown pg 9). The writers of the
Renaissance dealt with African American life from a African American perspective. The first
important writer of the Renaissance was Claude McKay (1889 1948), who was born in Jamaica and
came to the United States in 1912. McKay is best remembered for his poems treating racial themes.
His novel Home to Harlem became the first best seller by an African American author and he received
the Harmon Foundation s gold medal for literature (Howes 48). Jean Toomer (1894 1967) was the
second most important writer of the Renaissance and one of the most gifted in modern American
letters (Whitlow 80). After a visit to Georgia in 1921, Toomer wrote his most masterful work entitled
Cane.

The Legal Aspects Of Emulations And Emulators
GAMES
Convenience of Emulators: (Sinh Ly)
The legal aspects of emulations and emulators are tied with its association with ROMs, as defined by
Nintendo as Read Only Memory, which are usually illegally ripped (2015). An emulator is a software
that attempts to replicate the functions of another platform, in this case, a gaming console or portable
system, to run the code and interpret data from plugins that can interpret signals from a controller and
used with the program (Newman, 2013). The creation of emulators themselves are perfectly legal as
an act of investigation and analysis (Newman, 2013). If these emulators were to be used in
conjunction with new devices, such as the Retrode, which allows for classic game cartridges to be
read via USB on an emulator installed onto a computer, then the act would be deemed legal (Orland,
2013). However, as the Orland stated himself, These ROMS are legal, even though they re identical to
illegal ones you could find elsewhere, (2013) such thoughts leads to the negative connotation of
promoting piracy that is associated with emulators when the gaming industry thinks of them.
According to Nintendo (2015) on their opinions towards emulation:
The introduction of emulators created to play illegally copied Nintendo software represents the
greatest threat to date to the intellectual property rights of video game developers. As is the case with
any business or industry, when its products become available for free, the revenue stream

fingers at both plausible and implausible causes this deaths. Norman Cousins points out the potential
causes during the Griffith v. Paret Match that resulted in the death of Benny Paret in his essay Who

the fighting that prizefighting consist of. Cousin makes the point that the proponents of the boxing
searched for killers and sluggers and maulers as opposed to boxers skilled with the technical aspects
of pugilism. He links this with fatalities by stating that although a man can take a punch repeated
impacts will cause damage and has a risk of killing the man being stuck. Next he also loops the fans
into the nature of boxing. He states that crowd comes alive when violent acts occur such as when the

encourages them. The crowded rather than celebrating the sport for its martial arts treated it the boxers
like animals trying to kill another. This encouragement and draw to gore acts a contributor to boxing

Summary Of The Readers Strike By John Ross
In the reading, The Readers Strike , John Ross emphasizes the lives of cigar makers working in Ybor
City, Florida during the middle of the Great Depression. Although the Great Depression was a hard
time for most people, John Ross states that a few were well off through the great depression such as
fine cigar makers, certain stock brokers and politicians. Furthermore, cigar makers worked long hours
under the hot sun for low wages even though the cigar industry was doing better than most. However,
they still pooled their money together to pay for readers. These cigar makers were often foreigners
who were illiterate or spoke a different language. A contemporary issue arose with readers or los
lectores reading to the workers the words of Zola, Dickens, Cervantes, and Tolstoy that everything
they wrote was about the great depression and specifically the lives of the workers. ... Show more

According to John Ross, workers stopped working not because of the harsh conditions or low wages

Advantages And Disadvantages Of A Unact Unmanned Ground...
A compact unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) should be capable to travel through rough terrain while
traversing within confined spaces. In many applications, it is practically expedient that the vehicles
used must be economical, so that multiple rovers may be deployed to accomplish a given mission. The
cost of the UGV can be reduced by minimizing its size and mechanical intricacy. As in a traditional
treaded/tracked vehicle, here the model has a pair of tread assemblies or tracks, driven by an internal
sprocket, mounted on either side of a central chassis [1], [2]. A single chassis holds the actuators,
sensors, electronics, and battery. It includes the concept of inverted pendulum for various upright
configurations, capable of surmounting obstacles, including stairs. The maximum ... Show more

The standard treaded platform consists of two fixed tread mechanisms mounted on opposite sides of a
central chassis. This type of UGV performs well over a variety of both smooth and complex terrains
(including dirt, gravel, sand, snow, etc.), but the limitation persist as before. This limitation may be
extended by adding additional sprocket chain mechanism to increase the height of system (such as the
trapezoidal shape), or by adding secondary articulated treaded segments or flippers . Additional
treaded segments may be added to increase a treaded vehicle s adroitness, but the cost gets increased.
Here a compact treaded UGV, which is capable of overcoming obstacles roundly as high as its treads
are long via a unique mechanical architecture and adept implementation of feedback control
algorithms is shown. The overall height or the rover can be adjusted and made as per the requirement.
Here LQR controller along with LQT is used. Finally, the transformation to different modes of
operation are shown in simulation part.

Welfare And Economic Security
Welfare and economic security are issues that have plagued every society, if an individual is too old to
work, disabled, the family bread winner dies, or is involuntarily unemployed, societies have to deal
with this, and usually the government has to step in to fix this issue (DeWitt 2010). The United States
is a very interesting society to watch deal with a problem such as inequality as social and economic
inequality has marked the American experience (Lewis 1993, pg. 4). The individualist and self reliant
mindset emphasises the idea that individuals have the equal chance to wind up unequal (Lewis 1993).
Equal opportunities for everyone mean that if you fail to take care of your family, it is no ones fault
but your own. However, this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is reflected in aspects of American life such as private property, the free market, and welfare.
Because of this, there has always been a distrust of government, gaining too much power and
controlling the American way of life too much, and limiting the result of pure individualism. The
gruelling system of checks and balances was put in place to control this very fear. The prospect of
equal personal opportunity developed in the late nineteenth century, with names such as Ford,
Carnegie, and Rockefeller made it big in their fields, after starting from so little in life (Lewis 1993).
If an individual pursues their own self interests, they will indirectly promote the good of society
(Smith 2013).
The individualistic nature is ingrained deep in the American psyche and lifestyle. America has always
been the land of equal opportunity for all. Society is benign and what you achieve in life is all on you.
When it comes to the free market, the government is kept at bay, only stepping in to control
monopolies from corrupting the system. When the market is left alone, it will adjust, this is the same
mindset Americans have about themselves, leave people alone and they will adjust and get through
themselves. America is a country based around fear. Fears of an imperial presidency emerging, of the
government gaining too much power, and of the people rebelling. Inequality of initial opportunity is
not taken into account. Parents give their kids every head start in life that

Essay on Gender in Hawthorne’s Blithedale Romance
Gender in Hawthorne s Blithedale Romance
The Blithedale Romance, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a story of a twisted utopia. This perfect
world is twisted in that the roles of gender have a traditional utopian representation, only with a more
contemporary take. Of course, this is interesting because this book was written and published in the
19th century when such ideas were beginning to establish a form for the genre of writing. Hawthorne
combines fantasy, philosophy, mystery, gothic, and even [what would be called today] science fiction.
This novel illustrates the early break from even fresh ideas. The writing style allows for the
genderizing degenderizing affect as well as nature of the self.

The males within the novel always seemed to be placing their skills and knowledge above the women
s own. Characters such as Coverdale and Hollingsworth placed their own thoughts above those of the
female characters almost anytime that they could. The women, oddly, seemed to show diverse roles.
Subtly, this is a representation of women as more complex than men in general. One of the characters,
Zenobia, is probably the most least genderized character of the novel, that is, until the end.
Throughout most of the novel, she is seen as very masculine (in comparison to traditional roles that is)
yet very feminine at the same time. She has a mystical illusion about her yet seems very sensible in
the ways of life. However, by the end of the novel, Hawthorne writes her character to be very
manipulative and weak, for she dies of grief. On the other hand, the other female character, Priscilla,
seems to hold the same mystical aura about her, yet she is the is the typical female character. She is
feminine in her daily activities; she prances around with a constant smile and seems naive about the
world. She is the victim of other s doings. The hierarchy of the sexes is blatantly obvious in that it
favors the male and holds the male ideals perfectly.
Nature was a main idea in the

Expository All fairy tales continue to be relevant in today s world. The adventurous stories are
continually thriving through the different techniques that writers use including the themes that each

prevalent to the world today. Before fairy tales were the sources of many movie adaptions, they were
only spread word of mouth, where story tellers would share them with their communities. These story

from springs, wells, and private water companies. However, the population of Seattle increased in the
late 19th century, and the demand for water supply also increased. In June 6, 1889, there was a large

My Learning Disability
If I was invited to an interview for a new job, I would choose not to disclose my learning disability to

the cons outweigh the pros. Some of the cons include embarrassment, loss of independence, and
overall discrimination you may face from employers. First of all, sharing that you have a learning
disability can be very nerve wracking or even embarrassing for some. People aren t always accepting,

The Bolsheviks
Lawyers would say that Europe, Asia, and the United States of America are completely different.
However, from the point of view of the citizens, the similarities in their daily lives are numerous, even
if some fundamental differences remain. To begin with the most obvious similarity and example: in
the USA, as well as in parts of Europe, citizens use a single currency, identical to the currency of their
neighboring States. Just as in Europe, in the USA, several decisions remain the responsibility of the
states, such as highway code, certain taxes, social welfare, minimum wages, and certain areas of
justice. At the political level, some plea for further independence of the States in relation to the federal
government, while others are bidding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It should not be unforeseen that the Bolsheviks worked hard to safeguard that any person potentially
antagonistic to them did not retain arms. The first Soviet gun controls were enacted during the Russian
Civil War, as Czarists, Western troops, and national independence movements fought the central Red
regime. Firearm registration was instituted on April 1, 1918. In October 1918, the Council of People s
Commissars (the government) ordered the renunciation of all firearms, ammunition, and sabers. As
has been the case in nearly every nation where firearms registration has been introduced, registration
proved a preamble to confiscation. Excused from the confiscation order, however, were affiliates of
the Communist Party. A 1920 decree imposed a obligatory minimum penalty of six months in prison
for non Communist possession of a firearm, even where there was no felonious intent. After the Red
triumph in the Civil War, the firearm laws were consolidated in a Criminal Code, which if broken,
unauthorized possession of a firearm would be punishable by rigid labor. A 1925 law made
unauthorized possession of a firearm punishable by three months of hard labor, plus a fine of 300
rubles (equal to about four months wages for a highly paid construction worker). Stalin apparently
found little need to alternate the weapons control structure he had inherited. This chapter of Lethal
Laws summarizes the genocide perpetrated by Stalin from 1929 to 1953, starting with his efforts to
collectivize farming by destroying the class of property owning farmers. Altogether, about twenty
million people were murdered, worked to death in slave labor camps, or deliberately starved to death
by Stalin s government. Stalin s successful campaign of genocide against the Kulaks and against
dissident Communists served as a model for

sails and go south, but 10 miles down they see a chameleon type monster as large as the cyclops. They
ready their swords and raise their shields, except the monster greets them with a soft hello as docile as
a baby puppy.
Who are you? said Odysseus.
I am Chamelo, I was sent here by Zeus to help you get home. said the Chameleon. How can you prove
to me you want to help us? Odysseus asked.
I can morph into anything from 100 years ahead of time and behind, but not anything present.
Anytime I do that the time goes up by double and the older or futuristic it is, the more problems it will
have. Also if we need anything huge it takes out a lot of my energy so we would need to wait for my
energy to replenish. Chamelo said.
Okay then, can you morph into a huge boat 2654 years from now? He asked.
Yes, give me a few minutes It said.
A few minutes later the Chameleon, like he said, slowly turned into a huge metal ship with things
called motors and electronics. After being amazed, they went on and ran through it with amazement.
This here is something called a cruise ship, it is used for people to safely travel through the seas with
great fun in the 2000 s, and I am talking to you through things called speakers. Chamelo said
This is amazing! he exclaimed

In 2010 the figures were 25.8 million and 8.3% and has increased in 2012 to 29.1 million Americans,
or 9.3%. (American Diabetes Association, 2014); it is seen nationwide, and has now even begun to

Two out of three people with diabetes die from heart disease or stroke (American Diabetes

disease and how it can affect their daily lives, whether by short term complications like blurred vision,
to long term complications like kidney failure, and how they can prevent or delay diabetes and its
complications.
Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic illness that requires the individual to manage, support, and educate
themselves of their illness in order to prevent any further complications. It is disease that is caused by
the impairment of insulin secretion and also caused by insulin resistance and insulin deficiency.
Insulin is the hormone used to control and maintain homeostasis over the amount of glucose in our
blood stream. If not much insulin is secreted it can lead to hyperglycemia, which is an abnormal
increase of glucose in the body. Early symptoms of Diabetes Mellitus are related to hyperglycemia and
include, but not limited to, polyuria (excessive urination), polydipsia (excessive thirst), weight loss,
sometimes with polyphagia (excessive hunger), and blurred vision. This may also lead to pre diabetes,
which is when glucose levels are higher than normal, but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes
(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2014).

  • 2. Core Values Of Civilization Since the beginning of time people have been in awe at the formation of civilization. Books have been written, articles have been published, and even Sid Meier created the video game Civilization surrounding this concept. In the game, players are tasked with not only establishing and maintaining a civilization but as well as determining the core values and characteristics of the civilization in question. The core values of civilization are the use of tools and technology for life enhancement, social and political organization, and an agreed upon settlement and language. The use of tools and technology is one of the basic characteristics of civilization in that it allows the civilization the better itself. A common representation in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the earliest Indian civilization technology allowed the massive civilization of over 100,000 people to live together through the use of sewage canals to transport waste from the houses to larger canals. This concept has been used even in modern times. Technology allowed civilizations to not only better themselves but establish a legacy for the civilization to follow and last even until today. With every establishment and group there must be a sense of organization both political and social. Just as school clubs have officers, civilizations have leaders that spearhead the group. In the Stone Age, tribal leaders led the group from place to place. This nomadic lifestyle relied on experience to guide the search for food. Once settling into an agricultural lifestyle, social classes began to form based on success harvests and land ownership. In Mesopotamian culture, organization was built not only around social hierarchy with famous rulers being Sargon the Great and Hammurabi but religiously as pyramids known as Ziggurats were built to worship and sacrifice to the Gods. The greatest implementation of organization is found in ancient Egypt with not only the society being structured with the pharaoh ruling the nation and lower levels of aristocracy but with the emphasis being focused on religious efforts. Large touristgroups gather together blocking the street, and their constant buzzing noise bombards my ears.As I take in the families swarming the sides of the streets, a rush of impatience shoots up myspine. The fragrance of kettlecorn wafted down the street. Flavorless saliva fills my mouth, andmy eyes devour the passing cart. Cameras flash at the families dolled up for a memorable familyphoto. A miraculous moment under the shade beckons my presence; however, a different gravitypulls me away. The musty smell continues into the library. Shelves of forgotten novels line the fourwalls, and a large window is strategically placed between two of the shelves. The lights hangingfrom the ceiling are dimmed, and the melodic ringing of wind could be heard. Bodies crowdtogether in the small room, and all heads gaze at one single item. The television growls awarning, but it is set up in the form of a welcome to the hotel. Above the shelves sit manyknickknacks: a beat up camera, adusty music box, a rickety old fortune telling machine, andeven a vintage girl s doll sits on the wall with beady eyes staring down at me. I gaze at my oldfriends. Their presence adds a hype to the idea of what awaits. The television blanks out and thefamiliar spike in my heartbeat comes, and there goes the lightning right on queue. The creek ofthe door is heard over the rumbling of voices, when a bright light blinds my vision for a quicksecond. A heated breeze flocks into the room from the shadowy corridor. The empty smell of steam surrounds, and it caresses my arms the further into the room Igo. The cold brick walls brush against my arms as families rush past me. The concrete floorchanges into a steel bridge. Over the railing, the boilers cascade down to the floor standing talland rusted. The smell of oil and steel disgustingly mix. The sound of my feet clattering againstthe steel reverberates around the room. The bridge splits into two and leads the newcomers intoan aloof. I remember, in the end it doesn t matter; however, I am pulled to the right. The redboilers line the path as it slowly descends. The clatter of footsteps follows, and the steam in theroom thickens, crushing me. I turn to the elephant in the room. A steely service elevator door threatens the room in amagnificent haze of power. He asks them why they are crying and they say that their husbands were killed at the siege of Thebes and Creon, ruler of Thebes, would not let their husband s remains be recovered from the field (912 951). He heard this and was so emotionally moved that he decided to march on Thebes and take back their bodies. He lead his army to Thebes and captured Thebes. After the battle he saw two men from Thebes who were barely alive named Arcite and Palamon. Introduction General information Nowadays the energy consumption is on such high level that scientists all over the world are looking for other solution. The greenhouse effect is becoming more and more disturbing effect and some steps need to be taken to at least prevent some of damages which it may cause. First of all, I will try to explain what parabolic trough collector is. It is one of the types of solar thermal collectors which is straight in one dimension and curved as a parabola in the other. As you can see in the picture 1. the whole device can be divided into following parts: parabolic reflective mirror, linear receiver tube or heat collection element, steel support structure/frame and a single axis drive mechanism. Parabolic trough solar field consists of hundreds or even hundreds of hundreds of solar collector located parallel through the field. Every single collector assembly is an independently tracking subsystem so that it makes the whole system more efficient. picture 1 A parabolic solar collector assembly Parabolic trough collectors need to be designed as simple as possible, not to generate extra costs, easy to assembly which also means they can be transported in sections to ensure accurate parabola with high rigidity and to lengthen the field to its maximum (which can differ from several meters to over 150 meters). • 6. Guilt and Shame in Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter Guilt and shame haunt all three of the main characters in The Scarlet Letter, but how they each handle their sin will change their lives forever. Hester Prynne s guilt is publicly exploited. She has to live with her shame for the rest of her life by wearing a scarlet letter on the breast of her gown. Arthur Dimmesdale, on the other hand, is just as guilty of adultery as Hester, but he allows his guilt to remain a secret. Instead of telling the people of his vile sin, the Reverend allows it to eat away at his rotting soul. The shame of what he has done slowly kills him. Roger Chillingworth is a vile man who hides his disgrace of having a disloyal wife and finds pleasure in tormenting the poor Arthur Dimmesdale. When he comes to town at the beginning of The Scarlet Letter, Chillingworth makes Hester promise not to tell anyone that he is her real husband. Breath not, to any human soul, that thou didst ever call me husband! ... because I will not encounter the dishonor that besmirches the husband of a faithless woman... (Hawthorne 52 53). Chillingworth will not bear the shame in regards to his unfaithful wife, nor be burdened with supporting and providing for her. He is truly a cruel and twisted man. This unfaithfulness to his wife is not his only shame; he also is responsible for the daily, mental torture of Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale. She doubted not, that the continual presence of Roger Chillingworth, the secret poison of his malignity, infecting all the air about him, and his authorized interference, as a physician, with the minister s physical and spiritual infirmities, that these bad opportunities had been turned into a cruel purpose (Hawthorne132). Wickedly, Chillingworth eats away at the Reverend s very being, always searching Arthur s mind for a hint at his suspected, adulterous transgression. She shows how important it is to not only show differsity in books but also how important it is to make sure that everyone can read and has access to books. She spoke on how importance of main characters that have similar backgrounds am you, but also to be able to see people with different backgrounds doing the same everyday activities as you. In this paper, I will argue that having different cultures represented in children s books is an important part of children s literature. • 10. Analysis Of Poem Facing It By Yusef Komunyakaa War is one of the most controversial topics in today s society. However, because poetry tends to focus on the experiences of the author, it is quite widespread. Grief, fear, and pain are some of the most prevalent emotions in literature. In his poem, Facing It, Yusef Komunyakaa tells his experience with war and how it has affected him. The poem begins with the author experiencing a loss of identity as he is at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Then, he experiences nostalgia whilst reminiscing his past. Lastly, he experiences flashbacks that deter his ability to distinguish the past from the present. Komunyakaa wastes no time in loading his poem with themes. • 13. Influences On Victorian Gothic Literature Influences on Victorian gothic literature; religion, psychology, science and spirituality. Many great authors such as Mary Shelley and Bram Stoker indulged in the world of the supernatural with gothic novels such as Dracula and Frankenstein. However the origins of such tales and the Victorian obsession with the paranormal are not commonly explored. The gothic genre in fact dates back as far as 1765. The classic English gothic novel began with the author Horace Walpole and his novel, The Castle of Otranto: A Gothic Story. Walpole claimed that he had found an ancient manuscript which he then translated, thus creating his story. However, from what seems to be a recurring theme in Victorian spiritualism, this also was revealed as being false. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is a clear divide within the gothic genre which develops the perception of the church and religion during the Victorian period. On one hand many gothic novels view the church as an evil which corrupts society, whereas on the other hand religion and symbolism are the bringers of peace and eradicators of evil. For example within Bram Stoker s Dracula, the cross of the Christian faith is seen to drive away evil spirits and even Vampires. This portrays the Christian faith as a saviour of man, showing the willpower of God. Yet in Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, God s creation is questioned when man essentially takes life into his own hands, in the form of Victor Frankenstein creating the monster. Both sides of the argument are controversial, forcing gothic literature into genre which continues to cause controversy today. Although gothic literature and the church seem be inherently different, there are some featured similarities. Both the church and gothic fiction depend upon society to drive forwards their success. The gothic feeds upon the confusion of society, and at the same time the church is fuelled by the idea of safety from the supernatural. The church is in fact utilised in many gothic novels. • 14. Literary Analysis Of Blackberry Picking, By Seamus Heaney In life, people experience loss. Loss of a friend, a family member, or a significant other. Even though we don t always recognize it, death is inevitable. The loss that people experience may influence how they remember things and see the world. Seamus Heaney uses the speaker in the poem to show one way of dealing with death is to accept it. The nostalgic views of the speaker in the poem shows the speakers remembrance of picking the blackberries and even though the berries would rot too soon, the good memories of picking the berries would always outweigh the bad of them rotting. In Blackberry Picking , Seamus Heaney utilizes colorfully yet contrasting imagery, diction and structure to suggest that death is inevitable and loss isn t always the easiest thing to accept, but sometimes, that is the best way to handle it. First, The contrasting imagery of the poem represents life and death. At first, just one, a glossy purple clot among others, red, green, hard as a knot. the speaker uses the ripeness of a berry to represent a life. The red and green berries description of the bessies suggest they are not ready yet. I interpreted the berries to also represent the end of a pregnancy, where the mother is almost ready to give birth, but not quite yet. The glossy purple clot represents the berry finally being ready to be picked. This could also represent the actual birth of the baby. Later in the poem Heaney describes the berries having A rat grey fungus (19) and later describes the berries saying that The fruit fermented, the sweet flesh would turn sour. (21) I interpreted this imagery as representing death. As people get older, their hair often turns gray. Also, the fruit fermenting may represent the actual final death as the fruit rots and no longer lives. The contrasting imagery of the beginning and end of the very may very well represent the life and death of a person. As we go through life we begin as new, small, and tiny. When we age, we often become wrinkled and the aging shows not only with skin, but as well as the hair as stated before. As we grow older our interpretation of the world goes from pretty bright colors to dull, boring ones. Heaney s use of the imagery shows the audience that good things ... Over the last two centuries, expansion in large scale industrialisation and western populations has been associated with diet changes; Australians now consuming less omega 3 (Black Dog Institute, 2012). This essay will be examining this specific film through a worldview perspective. For the purposes of this essay, worldview will be defined as a perceptual framework . (The Transforming Vision, pg. 17) Worldviews can be specific to a single person, or generalized to a group of people. The worldview expressed in this essay through examples from The Fellowship of the Ring will come from the theme of Creation. This theme of Creation is correlated with the creation of the universe by God, as written in the book of Genesis. God created the heavens and the earth before Jesus was born; before salvation ever occurred. Similarly, The Fellowship of the Ring opens with a narrative explaining what the One Ring was and its importance to the rest of the story. The film does not begin with Frodo saving the day, but rather the history that laid the foundation for his journey to happen. The ring was forged in the fires of Orodruin by the Dark Lord Sauron after he convinced the elven smiths of Eregoin to forge the Rings of Power. Although God is nowhere near the same as Sauron, both created something specific to bring glory to themselves: God made the world, Sauron made a ring. The Legal Aspects Of Emulations And Emulators GAMES Convenience of Emulators: (Sinh Ly) The legal aspects of emulations and emulators are tied with its association with ROMs, as defined by Nintendo as Read Only Memory, which are usually illegally ripped (2015). An emulator is a software that attempts to replicate the functions of another platform, in this case, a gaming console or portable system, to run the code and interpret data from plugins that can interpret signals from a controller and used with the program (Newman, 2013). The creation of emulators themselves are perfectly legal as an act of investigation and analysis (Newman, 2013). If these emulators were to be used in conjunction with new devices, such as the Retrode, which allows for classic game cartridges to be read via USB on an emulator installed onto a computer, then the act would be deemed legal (Orland, 2013). However, as the Orland stated himself, These ROMS are legal, even though they re identical to illegal ones you could find elsewhere, (2013) such thoughts leads to the negative connotation of promoting piracy that is associated with emulators when the gaming industry thinks of them. • 28. Welfare And Economic Security Welfare and economic security are issues that have plagued every society, if an individual is too old to work, disabled, the family bread winner dies, or is involuntarily unemployed, societies have to deal with this, and usually the government has to step in to fix this issue (DeWitt 2010). The United States is a very interesting society to watch deal with a problem such as inequality as social and economic inequality has marked the American experience (Lewis 1993, pg. 4). The individualist and self reliant mindset emphasises the idea that individuals have the equal chance to wind up unequal (Lewis 1993). Equal opportunities for everyone mean that if you fail to take care of your family, it is no ones fault but your own. However, this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is reflected in aspects of American life such as private property, the free market, and welfare. Because of this, there has always been a distrust of government, gaining too much power and controlling the American way of life too much, and limiting the result of pure individualism. The gruelling system of checks and balances was put in place to control this very fear. The prospect of equal personal opportunity developed in the late nineteenth century, with names such as Ford, Carnegie, and Rockefeller made it big in their fields, after starting from so little in life (Lewis 1993). If an individual pursues their own self interests, they will indirectly promote the good of society (Smith 2013). The individualistic nature is ingrained deep in the American psyche and lifestyle. America has always been the land of equal opportunity for all. Society is benign and what you achieve in life is all on you. When it comes to the free market, the government is kept at bay, only stepping in to control monopolies from corrupting the system. When the market is left alone, it will adjust, this is the same mindset Americans have about themselves, leave people alone and they will adjust and get through themselves. America is a country based around fear. Fears of an imperial presidency emerging, of the government gaining too much power, and of the people rebelling. Inequality of initial opportunity is not taken into account. Parents give their kids every head start in life that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Essay on Gender in Hawthorne’s Blithedale Romance Gender in Hawthorne s Blithedale Romance The Blithedale Romance, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a story of a twisted utopia. This perfect world is twisted in that the roles of gender have a traditional utopian representation, only with a more contemporary take. Of course, this is interesting because this book was written and published in the 19th century when such ideas were beginning to establish a form for the genre of writing. Hawthorne combines fantasy, philosophy, mystery, gothic, and even [what would be called today] science fiction. This novel illustrates the early break from even fresh ideas. The writing style allows for the genderizing degenderizing affect as well as nature of the self. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The males within the novel always seemed to be placing their skills and knowledge above the women s own. Characters such as Coverdale and Hollingsworth placed their own thoughts above those of the female characters almost anytime that they could. The women, oddly, seemed to show diverse roles. Subtly, this is a representation of women as more complex than men in general. One of the characters, Zenobia, is probably the most least genderized character of the novel, that is, until the end. Throughout most of the novel, she is seen as very masculine (in comparison to traditional roles that is) yet very feminine at the same time. She has a mystical illusion about her yet seems very sensible in the ways of life. However, by the end of the novel, Hawthorne writes her character to be very manipulative and weak, for she dies of grief. On the other hand, the other female character, Priscilla, seems to hold the same mystical aura about her, yet she is the is the typical female character. She is feminine in her daily activities; she prances around with a constant smile and seems naive about the world. She is the victim of other s doings. The hierarchy of the sexes is blatantly obvious in that it favors the male and holds the male ideals perfectly. Nature was a main idea in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The adventurous stories are continually thriving through the different techniques that writers use including the themes that each tale embraces to draw their readers in and remember them. This allows for the fairy tales to be prevalent to the world today. • 31. The Portland s Water System Essay I have learned about the Portland s water system in the first of a few weeks. I have learned the Portland s water resources, water quality management, history of water system, water transportation system, and water issues in Portland area. Now, I compare Portland s water system to another city in the United States. I pick up Seattle s water system because I lived in Seattle for two years before I move to Portland, and I m interested in the Seattle s water system. In this journal, I write about the following sections: History of Seattle s water system, water resources, water quality management, water transportation, water issues in Seattle, and conclusion (similarities and differences between Seattle s water system and Portland s water system). History: In the 19th century, Seattle s water came from springs, wells, and private water companies. However, the population of Seattle increased in the late 19th century, and the demand for water supply also increased. In June 6, 1889, there was a large fire what is called Great Seattle Fire in downtown Seattle. After this event, government decided to establish municipal water system. After this plan was approved, the government constructed the Cedar River water system. On January 10th, 1901, water from the Cedar River flowed into Seattle s water system for the first time. A pipeline channeled water to the Lincoln reservoirs and the Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill. When the water system constructed, the water system capacity was 23.5 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. My Learning Disability If I was invited to an interview for a new job, I would choose not to disclose my learning disability to the interviewer. Despite the fact that there are many upsides to disclosure, I personally feel as though the cons outweigh the pros. Some of the cons include embarrassment, loss of independence, and overall discrimination you may face from employers. First of all, sharing that you have a learning disability can be very nerve wracking or even embarrassing for some. People aren t always accepting, and they may see you as someone who you re truly not. This ties into the second reason why I wouldn t disclose my learning disability in a job interview: loss of independence. When people find out that you have a learning disability, sometimes they ... • 33. The Bolsheviks Lawyers would say that Europe, Asia, and the United States of America are completely different. However, from the point of view of the citizens, the similarities in their daily lives are numerous, even if some fundamental differences remain. To begin with the most obvious similarity and example: in the USA, as well as in parts of Europe, citizens use a single currency, identical to the currency of their neighboring States. Just as in Europe, in the USA, several decisions remain the responsibility of the states, such as highway code, certain taxes, social welfare, minimum wages, and certain areas of justice. It should not be unforeseen that the Bolsheviks worked hard to safeguard that any person potentially antagonistic to them did not retain arms. The first Soviet gun controls were enacted during the Russian Civil War, as Czarists, Western troops, and national independence movements fought the central Red regime. Firearm registration was instituted on April 1, 1918. In October 1918, the Council of People s Commissars (the government) ordered the renunciation of all firearms, ammunition, and sabers. As has been the case in nearly every nation where firearms registration has been introduced, registration proved a preamble to confiscation. Excused from the confiscation order, however, were affiliates of the Communist Party. A 1920 decree imposed a obligatory minimum penalty of six months in prison for non Communist possession of a firearm, even where there was no felonious intent. After the Red triumph in the Civil War, the firearm laws were consolidated in a Criminal Code, which if broken, unauthorized possession of a firearm would be punishable by rigid labor. A 1925 law made unauthorized possession of a firearm punishable by three months of hard labor, plus a fine of 300 rubles (equal to about four months wages for a highly paid construction worker). Stalin apparently found little need to alternate the weapons control structure he had inherited. This chapter of Lethal Laws summarizes the genocide perpetrated by Stalin from 1929 to 1953, starting with his efforts to collectivize farming by destroying the class of property owning farmers. Altogether, about twenty million people were murdered, worked to death in slave labor camps, or deliberately starved to death by Stalin s government. Stalin s successful campaign of genocide against the Kulaks and against dissident Communists served as a model for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Odysseus Short Story Essay When the king of Phaeacia decided to give Odysseus a new crew they set off immediately. They set sails and go south, but 10 miles down they see a chameleon type monster as large as the cyclops. They ready their swords and raise their shields, except the monster greets them with a soft hello as docile as a baby puppy. Who are you? said Odysseus. I am Chamelo, I was sent here by Zeus to help you get home. said the Chameleon. How can you prove to me you want to help us? Odysseus asked. I can morph into anything from 100 years ahead of time and behind, but not anything present. Anytime I do that the time goes up by double and the older or futuristic it is, the more problems it will have. Also if we need anything huge it takes out a lot of my energy so we would need to wait for my energy to replenish. Chamelo said. Okay then, can you morph into a huge boat 2654 years from now? He asked. Yes, give me a few minutes It said. A few minutes later the Chameleon, like he said, slowly turned into a huge metal ship with things called motors and electronics. After being amazed, they went on and ran through it with amazement. This here is something called a cruise ship, it is used for people to safely travel through the seas with great fun in the 2000 s, and I am talking to you through things called speakers. Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic illness that requires the individual to manage, support, and educate themselves of their illness in order to prevent any further complications. It is disease that is caused by the impairment of insulin secretion and also caused by insulin resistance and insulin deficiency. Insulin is the hormone used to control and maintain homeostasis over the amount of glucose in our blood stream. If not much insulin is secreted it can lead to hyperglycemia, which is an abnormal increase of glucose in the body. Early symptoms of Diabetes Mellitus are related to hyperglycemia and include, but not limited to, polyuria (excessive urination), polydipsia (excessive thirst), weight loss, sometimes with polyphagia (excessive hunger), and blurred vision. This may also lead to pre diabetes, which is when glucose levels are higher than normal, but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2014).
