Ongka s Big Moka
The 1976 documentary film Ongka s Big Moka is a prime example to explicate the resemblance of
gift economy and creditor debtor relationship with regard to interest. Moka is a ritual of gifting in
tribes of the Mount Hagen area in Papua New Guinea. Pigs as well as other live stocks, cassowaries,
scarce pearl shells, and as the modern civilization gradually penetrates into the tribes, cash and
automobiles are given away at the ceremony. Giving away food and gifts is translated to status and
rank. The greater the value of the gifts and the scale of the feast are, the greater the power it brings to
the host of the moka. The receiving tribe tries to repay the gift to recover its prestige by hosting
another moka with more generous gifts and a more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The receiver of the gift is better off in a utilitarian sense, if he chooses not to return the favor. Yet why
does he have the desire to repay? Why does receiving a gift put him at a social disadvantage? The
economy of gift of Bataille differs from Nietzsche s creditor debtor relationship with regard to the
psychology behind these two dynamics. While Bataille delved into the mentality of the giver, who has
the upper hand in this power relation, Nietzsche focused on the psychology of the debtor. Bataille
construed the economy of gifting as an act out of man s animal factor that goes beyond the want of
acquisition a human instinct to win and to overpower. It is in man s nature to covet prestige, glory and
rank (Bataille, 1997, p. 376), yet they do not come without comparison and competition. Thus, the
giver of the gift has to deliberately create a rivalry, and thus, an inequality that favors himself in order
to acquire prestige, glory and rank. It is this desire for superiority that gives man the ultimate incentive
to give away his wealth. Gifting is to win by losing. It also explains the increment value in the return
of the gift, for the receiver of the initial gift not only wants to recover his equality with the initial
giver, but also to overpower him, to defeat him. The same desire that fuels the endless cycle of gifting
rituals like moka and potlatch. One good potlatch deserves another, and

The Absolute Monarchy, The Baroque, Baroque And The...
The absolute monarchy, the Baroque style and the Scientific Revolution were very critical movements
during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The similarity and difference of these three movements
marked the beginning of early modern Europe and their interaction with each other made a huge
influence on political and social reform in European countries.
The one thing common in the absolute monarchy, the Baroque style and the Scientific Revolution was
that they all stood for the end of the Middle Ages. The absolute monarchy started a new regime with
the centralized power and the King of supreme. The Baroque period generated a new form of art to
worship the Church and the absolute authority. The Scientific Revolution led to a new era with a
different world view and the development of rationality. However, these three movements built on one
another and impacted the society in different directions, which will be discussed in the following.
The absolute monarchy was a political system reform in order to deal with social turmoil. It was
developing across Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Around the middle of the
seventeenth century, France experienced a religious strife that the various Parlements and the nobility
started the revolution against the monarch. The Parlements and the nobility asked for the right to claim
the power and weaken the King s regime. The nobility threw France into turmoil by pillaging and
affrighting the innocent people. Under

Robin Hood And The Three Squires
The genre for the literary text Robin Hood and the Three Squires is poetry, while its sub genre is
ballad. It is because a ballad uses repeated words and phrases, including refrain, to advance its story
(Kirzhner and Mandell, 2000).
In the ballad Robin Hood and the Three Squires, Robin Hood goes to Notthingham. Along the way, he
hears of the three men who are sentenced to death for killing the king s deer and begins to devise a
plan to save them. In the end, he manages to save them while the sheriff is hung.
One literary device used in this ballad is rhymes, a repetition of similar sounding words occurring at
the end of lines in poems or songs (http://literarydevices.net). In every stanza of the ballad, the sound

He thinks that killing the king s deer is not serious compared to the crimes such as burning parishes
and killing ministries, and they do not deserve to die. He is not afraid to face the authorities in order to
save the old woman s sons. Furthermore, he is very clever to think of such a brilliant strategy to save
the three men. He disguises himself as an old man and offers to be the hangman for the day. He
manages to persuade the sheriff to allow him to blow his horn, calling his men. I also think that he is
very generous, because he is willing to spend as much as twenty pieces of gold just to execute his
plans. Not only that, he is willing to exchange his own clothes with the rags the old man is wearing.
However, I think that he should not hang the sheriff. Though the sheriff may have done a lot of
despicable things, he should not be killed. There are a lot of ways to bring the sheriff into justice, and
killing him is not an option. Taking one s life is a very serious matter. When one takes the life of
another, he would have to bear the burden for the rest of his life. Moreover, killing the sheriff means
that Robin Hood would have another crime pinned on him. As his crimes add on, the penalties will
become more severe. By killing the sheriff, he would get a death

How Far Can It Be Argued That Popular Culture Is...
The Marxist concept of ideology is used to express the way in which the dominant group in a society
controls the norms and values of that society at the level of ideas. As they own and direct the
production of popular cultural products the dominant group are able to present their ideas as both
normal and natural and `so mystify the `real conditions of existence (Hall.1992.p348). In this way the
group holding power exercises maximum control with the minimum of conflict. The general
population accepts the status quo as inevitable, and revolution is avoided. While Marxists view this as
a matter of Capitalist control, Feminists see ideological domination as the means by which women are
encouraged to accept a subordinate role in patriarchal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Feminist theory shares much common ground with Marxism and many of the ideas of European
Marxists have been appropriated and used by feminists. It has been suggested that this is particularly
true of the ideas of Althusser and Gramsci (Gramman and Marshment in Strinati.1995.p180). Both of
these theorists place emphasis on the idea of ideology as a means of control. Althusser suggests that
ideology is not merely inherent in popular cultural practices but becomes `material practice
(Storey.1998.p97) and a part of daily existence. For Althusser ideology is found in the customs,
traditions and patterns of behaviour of everyday life in such a way that social actors are not aware of
their participation in the acceptance and propagation of the ideas of the most powerful group in
society. Using Althusser s theories feminists may suggest that a tradition such as the celebration of
Mother s Day can be seen as valourizing that particular role for women, while failing to recognize any
other. This may lead women to see the maternal role as the most important one for them in society,
thus serving the interests of the dominant male group by encouraging women not only to become
mothers, but also to assume the position of primary child carers. Such an interpretation suggests that
many traditions and customs are to a large extent ideological.

The Fallen Hero Essay
The Fallen Hero Wake up, Riku, wake up. Who are you? Riku yawns while he slowly gets up. Wake
up, young hero, it is time for you to stand up to darkness once more. You have been in deep slumber in
this shrine for a hundred years. Walk out of the shrine to fulfill your destiny, said the mysterious voice.
After the voice stopped, Riku got out of the sleeping chamber he was in. He walked out of the shrine,
and the first thing he saw after a hundred years amazed him. The shrine he came out of was part of
cliff covered with fresh, earthy grass, swaying back and forth as the wind blows. Then, Riku started to
look around the area and below the cliff there was big green oak tree forest. The sky was clear, and the
sun gave the sky Far away, he could also see that there was a volcano covered by dark gray clouds.
Riku took a stroll down the path to the forest, and on the way he met an old man. The old man walked
towards him and he offered Riku to sit with him for a meal. Riku sat down, and the old man handed
him a grilled fish on a stick. Then, the old man started to talk to him. Young man, I haven t seen you
around here. It looks beautiful in this area doesn t it? This land isn t what it used to be. There used to

The cause of elder abuse is multifaceted. Generally, a combination of psychological, social, and
economic factors, as well as mental and physical conditions of the victim and perpetrator contribute to
the occurrence of elder abuse Wagner, Greenberg, Capezuti, 2002 as cited on (Fulmer Greenberg,
2012). In the developing world family members provide 60% to 80% of long term care of their elderly
significant others (American Psychological Association, 2012). Consequently, the burden of providing
constant physical care needs such as toileting and bathing can be particularly stressful. The complexity
of providing care to a physically, cognitively or emotionally impaired elderly individual can also be
tremendous. Depression, confusion, Alzheimer s disease, or incontinence on the part of the aging
person can make care giving especially overwhelming ((American Psychological Association, 2012).
According to American Psychological Association (2006), in addition to providing in average 20
hours a week at home on care giving responsibilities, about 64% of those family caregivers work
either part time or full time out side of home. As a result, the caregivers often suffer from interrupted
sleep, chronic fatigue, little or no privacy, and disintegrating personal lives. (National Center for Elder
Abuse, 2011). Furthermore, abuse can often escalates when the care giver faces economic hardships,
such as unable to pay the cost of health care services for the

Puerto Rican Music and Its Significance Essay
Puerto Rican Music and Its Significance
Although the policies of Americanization and degradation of Puerto Rican culture heritage improved
by the United States in Puerto Rico during the early decades of the twentieth century, the utmost
concern for the United States was the strategic location of the island for political and economic
advantages, not of the people who inhabited it. Puerto Rico, though a poor colony, was a rich cultural
spot in an area of dynamic cultural influence of the Caribbean. One aspect of the Puerto Rican culture
that was greatly influenced by its location in the Caribbean and by its repossession by the United
States is music. Music permeated the daily life of Puerto Ricans (Waxer, Oct. 29). Music was the ...

Thus the bomba became known as talking drums (Glasser, 1995).
The plena, another typical form of Puerto Rican music, was considered the singing newspaper. It was
developed at the turn of the century by a lower class mulato population (made up of Puerto Rican
freed slaves and migrants from the English Antilles) on the coast. Themes for the music came from the
idiosyncrasies and normalcies of daily life, and was incorporated through a narrative verse taken from
the Spanish music culture through call and response . Call and response, another African influence, is
a component of traditional African musical expression in which a phrase is sung (chanted by part of a
group of people and that phrase is responded to by a refrain by the other part of the group. Call and
response is a component of the bomba, the plena, and the danza and still exists today as an important
ingredient of Puerto Rican music. It facilitates dialogue, and encourages a sense of community by
enabling more people to join in, which then closes the gaps between classes and races (Waxer, Oct.
29).
The third traditional form of Puerto Rican music is the danza. This genre, developed by mulato
artisans in late nineteenth century, reflected the race, class, and nationality issues which were present
at that time. As the plena and the bomba had African roots, the danza had roots in English, French, and

When the t sound/letter is repeated, the rhythm of the line sounds much better, but it also adds a
happy, upbeat mood that gets added, which is weird because this stanza is talking about the alarm
bells, that warn of a dangerous situation.
Onomatopoeia:
How they clang, and clash, and roar! line 54
Onomatopoeia is added here and show the normal adjectives that are described with bells (clang and

How Parchman Reflects The Intertwined Themes Of Reform And...
Analyzing how Parchman reflects the intertwined themes of reform and race, we must look back into
the history of the state, to see what caused the instability that led to reform and the role that citizens
played. The Civil War is just ending and the South lost not only did they lose the battle , but they also
lost their family members, homes, land and most of all for some they lost their slaves. During the war
Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all slaves in territories that
opposed the Union. Oshinsky paints a beautiful picture of the scenes that had unfolded when he wrote
that, Few could escape the consequences of this war. Mississippi was bankrupt. Its commerce and
transportation had collapsed. The railroads and levees lay in ruins. Local governments barely
functioned. (p.12) The world that many white southerners had come to know was now destroyed.
Being placed under these conditions, outraged many white southerners. Adding fuel to the fire, the
fact of knowing that former slaves were now equal to even the poorest of whites, did not set well. The
author states that, this hatred had many sources. The ex slave had become a scapegoat for the South s
humiliating defeat. John F.H. Claiborne, Mississippi s most prominent historian, blamed him for
causing the war and for helping the North to prevail. ( Oshinsky, 1996, p. 14) Carl Schdrz, a reformer
from the North, became very concerned about how blacks would be treated, with rising sense of

Analysis Of The Movie Braveheart By William Wallace
If people hear the name William Wallace, they might think of the Mel Gibson movie, Braveheart . As
that is a great movie, it s not nearly the full story of William Wallace. Therefore, a hunt for the truth of
the real the story was underway. William Wallace was born in 1270 s in Scotland, but not much is
known about his childhood but that he lived with his father, Sir Malcom Wallace, on a small piece of
land in Scotland. (BBC) and (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica) This is dock number one on the
movie. Although some may say, Shame on you Hollywood, for making up the childhood of this
remarkable history hero , At the time of Wallace s childhood, Scotland was starting its decline into
succession when it was taken over by England. Therefore, the stories could, in fact, be true, although
no evidence proves it. As Wallace grew up he learned how to fight battles logically, which overtime
made him grow very respected with the men he met. He was taught to think before he would speak.
He was a natural born leader and would hold his position firmly. This led to battles won where he had
very few men, but a very passionate and trusting crew because Wallace was their leader. In 1296, the
king of England, Edward I, took advantage of the succession in Scotland and declared himself as ruler
of Scotland with English administration. Only a few revolts had taken place when sheriffs were
subject to different areas of Scotland, and even fewer were successful. So far it seems as though

Psychological Effects Of Deindividuation
The need to belong is an innate need among humanity. Whether it means joining a group of people
with the same interests, religious beliefs, or ethnicity, people tend to cling to those who relatively have
the same characteristics. This can simply be observed in a high school cafeteria, most notably
separating groups by athletic or academic interests, within these groups, each person is taking action
to be more liked by each of its members. Although a majority of groups are not extremists, the ones
that are, thrive because of social influence and the need to belong. In comparison to the social
psychological perspective of the Nazi regime, members of the Islamic State (IS) are susceptible to
group polarization due to excessive use of social media. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the Nazi regime did not have computers, the social influence of propaganda was still
successful. Propaganda is used as a tool to manipulate and provoke behaviors to further the intentions
of the group. When people already have pre existing beliefs, they are enhanced by propaganda, which
makes it a useful, but dangerous tool when the intentions of the group are to harm those who have
different beliefs. Similar to the Nazis, the intentions of ISIS is to protect the land and, according to the
Quran, only Muslims may live in the caliphate while obeying and promoting their government efforts.

There was a return to a monophonic texture for the cello and the dynamics became pianissimo. Since
this movement s form was ostinato, I heard short melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic patterns repeated.
This piece was long, at twelve minutes, and at one point I stopped taking notes, in awe of what I was
hearing. The entire piece felt symmetrical to me and was sing able throughout. Beethoven s Sonata 3,
Opus 69 nears a close with a texture that was heterophonic, dynamics that go from forte to piano and a
bright tone color for cello and piano. The melody remained conjunct with a contour that was wavelike,
by ascending and descending, especially for the piano. The tempo returned to allegro throughout this
piece and ended with the dynamics returning to forte and the final cadence as the harmony resolved in
consonance. The second movement of Beethoven s Sonata in A Major, Opus 69 was Scherzo: Allegro
molto and began with Jordan Anders playing the opening notes of the melody in a narrow range with a
melodic movement that was conjunct. The texture here was monophonic for only a few measures. The
timbre of the piano was bright and the harmony was minor. I heard the second movement in triple
meter, and by the time the cello began to play there seemed to be a return to the polyphonic texture
which was common in the first movement. The movement of the melody was disjunct with a medium
range, the dynamics of the piano soft (piano) and the tempo

Branding And Marketing Of Mdl For The Twin Cities Market...
Branding and Marketing of MDL for the Twin Cities Market Although they may seem one in the
same, we want to explain and differentiate the terms Branding and Marketing. Although they are
closely related and should actively complement each other for a successful business strategy, they
should have separate and individualized goals and budgets. Branding a long term process by which we
will create and manufacture the presence of MDL through consistent visibility, creating simple, yet
powerful, to the point messages which boost the awareness of MDL, along the lines of Have You Been
To? Branding is built by presenting repetitive and cohesive messages, increasing the familiarity of the
name, its purpose and vision to build a reputation and ultimately an experience. Brand isn t traceable,
but is the tool that makes the marketing successful. Marketing is an immediate action, which puts
consumers in the midst of the daily, monthly, seasonal, and special event specifics and ongoings at

Thus far, our branding campaign has been limited primarily to the following:
1. Six billboards on Northbound 35
2. Face to face
3. MDL brochure displays we have instituted with ski, bike, archery, and disc golf shops throughout
the metro area, further motivated by trade incentives for employees of the above mentioned
businesses. Secondary elements in our branding campaign:

Iran And The Iranian Nuclear Program
Iran is currently a burning issue due to its nuclear program and the dialogue between the USA and Iran
has seemed very complicated since years. Western countries have feared that Iran wants to acquire the
atomic bomb since they have discovered its nuclear program in 2003. From that moment Iran has been
considered as a real threat by the USA. But in fact the relations between these two countries have
begun about 150 years ago and have not always been tense. The first relations were also cordial and
useful for both parties. Iran used the US help to develop its education and industry, notably its oil
industry, and the USA found an ally in the Middle East.
So why Iran came to be perceived as a threat to the US and is it still a threat?
Firstly we will focus on the beginning of the relations between the two countries. Then we will see
how the Islamic revolution in 1979 radically changed the relationships. We will also examine the
current issue of the Iranian nuclear program. Finally we will try to understand the foreign policy and
the intentions of Tehran.
1. Iran and the Cold War 1950s
The first official relations between the USA and Iran began in 1856 when the Shah of Persia
Nasreddine sent an ambassador to Washington. Until the Second World War these relations were
cordial. Actually the support of the USA served as a buffer against the pressure of the British and
Russian Empire on Iran. But the implication of the USA in Iran was still limited. This situation

The Mayor Case Study
The Role of the Mayor
Introduction to the Issue
This essay aims to examine the role of the mayor in regards to the politics of local government in
Ontario. The process of the development of public policy has shifted considerably during the last few
decades. Due to the advent of globalization and of social media, public sector decision making has
expanded to include more stakeholders than ever before. As a result, mayors have come under
significant pressures to engage not only political actors in decision making, but also communities and
individuals as well, which changes the way that they operate in their public role. This indicates that
the idea of municipal governance may also be changing within the minds of citizens. This essay will
draw on a case study based on the city of Mississauga and its needs from the mayor and city council.
This essay strives to provide insight into the process of developing a strong mayoral strategy using the
example of the city of Mississauga, looking at its current and future plans for development. The thesis

Editor s Note
The 2016 edition of the Harvard Journal of African American Public Policy is includes several
articles, commentaries and interviews that illuminate the movement to establish a Black identity,
Black Space, within institutions where Black visibility and input is limited if it exists at all.
The Politics of Black Space theme of the publication chronicles the movement of Black student and
progressive faculty leadership to form, and, by means necessary, force accountability of institutional

Glyphosate And Roundoup Lab Report
Blepharisma Unaffected by Glyphosate; Killed by RoundUp
INTRODUCTION
Blepharisma (Blepharisma japonicum) is a protist found in fresh and saltwater. Runoff is a common
problem in lake water, particularly RoundUp. The active ingredient in RoundUp is glyphosate.
Glyphosate works by blocking the synthesis of proteins in certain plants, subsequently killing them
(National Pesticide Prevention Center, 2010). Because of this finding, it was assumed that glyphosate
would have a similar effect on microbes. The purpose of this experiment was to observe the effect of
different concentrations of glyphosate and RoundUp on blepharisma.
The goal was to examine the environment found in Wisconsin lakes and measure the effect that runoff
has on microorganisms in nature. The hypothesis of the experiment was that if glyphosate is added to
the environment then blepharisma will move across the field diameter slower.
METHODS
Preparing Glyphosate and RoundUp Solutions
Solutions of glyphosate and RoundUp were prepared at several concentrations. The concentrations of
glyphosate made were 1%, 25%, 50%. Glyphosate solutions were created by adding concentrated ...

By determining how long it took one organism in the control condition (no glyphosate or RoundUp
added to sample) to cross the field diameter and dividing that time (in seconds) by the approximate
field diameter (~4mm), the control speed was determined to be approximately 1.97 mm/s (4mm/7.89
s).
Testing the Effect of Glyphosate and RoundUp on Blepharisma
To test the effect of glyphosate and RoundUp on Blepharisma, two drops of one solution from a
transfer pipet, at a single solution at one concentration, were added to the sample on the glass slide.
The dependent variable was organism speed, so the effect was measured in terms of the change in
speed of blepharisma as the moved across the field diameter.

Small Steps By Louis Sachar
Have you ever read or watched the movie, Holes ? Who was your favorite character? Wow! Armpit?
Well today must be your lucky day because in the book Small Steps by Louis Sachar, it revolves
around Armpit s life! To start off, one of my favorite quotes in the story would be, This is Theodore
Johnson, (Sachar, 2). I know you may be thinking, What s so significant about this quote? Thing is, in
Holes, everyone called him Armpit. We never actually knew what his real name was, but now we do.
You might be curious about his nickname Armpit, where did that come from? Well one day at Camp
Green Lake Juvenile Correction Center, Theodore aka Armpit, got stung by a scorpion and the pain
gradually traveled up through his body and stayed at his armpit. Another quote I enjoyed was, But I m
taking small steps cause I don t know where I m going. I m taking small steps and I don t know what
to say. Small steps, trying to pull myself together and maybe I ll discover a clue along the way!
(Sachar, 143). Personally, I love finding quotes that have the title in it. I feel as if this would be the
reason behind the title of the novel. Also this quote showed Armpit s thoughts. He has completely
changed ever since he got out of Camp Green Lake. He lost weight, he takes school seriously and tries
to get out of trouble. Anyways, this story starts off with Armpit holding a shovel once again, but this

Abols And Symbolism In Yann Martel s Life Of Pi
Do bananas really float? This is a problem that two characters in Life of Pi struggled comprehending
towards the end of the the story. Life of Pi by Yann Martel is about a boy named Pi Patel that ends up
stranded on a lifeboat with a tiger, in the Pacific. In Life of Pi a major key thematic statement that
Yann Martel makes during Pi s journey is that just because things may seem unrealistic, it doesn t
mean that people cannot overcome or complete a task . Yann uses the island s setting, Pi s religious
development, and the banana symbolism to deliver his thematic message.
First unrealistic task that came about would be the island s setting, along the unusual setting in
general. Not very often, if ever is it usual to hear about being stranded on an acidic island with a tiger,
but as we can see from Yann s story it can happen. Yann sets Pi running into an acidic island made of
no soil, but alge instead. As Pi is explaining to the investigators, they have a really hard time believing
Pi. Pi had been through a lot during his journey, and Yann adds how Pi is hoarding food from being so
traumatized. He s already had plenty and most he hasn t even eaten. There right underneath his bed
sheet. The men seeing these actions done by Pi, confuses them and that even leads to them not
thinking that the story he is telling is true. As they continue to listen to Pi he adds things like how he

before it starts to change in color and start to harden. In the winter time, the Whitetail Deer will move
more to cover to keep out of the harsh elements. They revert to acorns falling from the trees and also
corn and beans before its about to be harvested. Also having food plots planted for them with greens

A Dead Boy
Dewey Skeates had just seen a dead boy. The image had been running through his mind all day. Blood
on his chest and blood on his hands and blood in his mouth. It didn t make any sense. Death didn t
exist. It just wasn t something that was physically possible until someone reached at least one hundred
and fifty years of age or so. The government had issued a statement during the genetic renaissance that
said that the whole population had had their genetic codes altered to allow for enzymes to quickly fix
anything that was broken. Dewey being an incredibly smart boy for his eleven years, a genius one

saw no way for death to be possible. His older sister, Ariata, had suggested that maybe some people
could die but no one knew when they did. He had wholeheartedly rejected that theory, but it left his
mind whirring with possibilities. Oh the endless possibilities, he thought to himself.
Several hours after the days gruesome events, Dewey found himself alone in his room, pondering the
unlikeliness of the situation. His room was filled with a myriad of scientific instruments. They were
strewn across his floor along with several pieces of paper covered in calculations and ideas. A hamster
cage sat on a table in the corner. Dewey stared at the cage. It was home to his Hamster Daxel, who
was just about as old as Dewey was. Dewey silently approached the cage wondering if hamsters

ENERGY IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
Abstract
This report discusses the role of energy in sustainable development goals. The report highlights on the
target set by the United Nations and the time frame given to achieve these targets. Some of the
challenges hindering sustainable development especially in the poor sections of the population and
measures needed to be taken have also been identified. It concludes with the primary principles and
basic practices needed to be taken in order to achieve the sustainable development goals.
Introduction
Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising
the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Brundtland report, 1987). This really
emphasizes on the needs and the idea of limitations often related to the world s poor on how to bridge
the gap of needs and the environment (including climate) now and the future. Basically, it elaborates
on the equality of the life between the rich and the poor (that is, how the poor can be on par with the
rich) in terms of standard of living. Also, it draws attention to the use of green technologies in order to
build a better and brighter future. I believe this cannot be achieved easily, therefore the possibility of
achieving this can be very low, but with strong initiatives and plans, the bridge can be narrowed. An
effective tool for this can

Essay about Ontological Argument Critique
The existence of God is a much debated philosophical argument that has mystified philosophers since
the age of the Enlightenment. Many of the different arguments put forth and analysed though, have not
adequately proven God s existence. Although in order to move forward, failed arguments must be
studied to ensure that mistakes are not repeated. One such argument is the Ontological Argument.
This argument was first recorded by St. Anslem (1033 1109). Descartes adapts this argument in the
fifth meditation in Meditations on First Philosophy. He first establishes that whenever he thinks about
a triangle, there are certain properties that must be present in order for the form to be a triangle.
Further even if perhaps no such figure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since no such island actually exists, Gaunilo concludes, therefore, that the argument does not prove
God s existence.
However, Descartes addressed Gaunilo s objection stating simply that whilst an island is a contrived
thought, his triangle is not. The properties of triangles can be obvious and discoverable truths; they
can be proven despite the thinker. On the other hand, the perfect island may vary, based on the
thoughts of different people. Thus, to link God with thoughts of an island is flawed (Cardinal, et al,
2005). Another philosopher, Charles Hartshorne held that an island was a contingent entity that can
endure termination by nature. God is a necessary as he is unaffected by nature. Thus, the two entities
fail to relate to each other adequately. (Grim, 1983)
As the weakest of the objections, Gaunilo does appear to have missed the point of the Ontological
Argument. He mistakenly likens his island to God when, this is rather more akin to Descartes triangle
or, more so, his mountain and valley. An island needs to be completely surrounded by water in order to
be called an island, just as every mountain must have a valley. To remove these properties will remove
something meaningful from these entities; Descartes claims existence is an essential attribute of God.
However, the crux of

The Reign Of Peter The Great
The reign of Peter the Great has been a source of considerable historical debate for many
contemporary and traditional historians. Especially, the transformation he made to Russian culture,
politics and economic, which arguably changed the foundations of society. Thus, the interval of some
three hundred years has allowed us to access Peter the Great s reforms more accurately but we must
consider that Russia during the late 17th century existed in different ethical and social circumstances
to our own contemporary society as to make it almost a foreign civilisation. Judgements about Peter
the Great using today s political and moral perspectives may have to be tempered unless we are
accused of historical and cultural relativism. Therefore, we must be careful in analysing the impact
that his many reforms caused and the lasting nature that they had on the very foundations of Russian
society.
Through his reign Peter revolutionised his country, reorganizing and strengthening the state and army,
conquering new territories and building new navy, a seaport, and a new capital in St. Petersburg 1. The
most significant change, Bushkovitch argues, was his campaign of Europeanisating Russia s culture
which saw the introduction of all forms of Western advancements emerge into the society and by
1725, Russia had achieved the aim of entering on the European stage. The ultimate objective was to at
least equal if not surpass other European states while joining them in their great power

Horace Walpole s Castle Of Otranto
In the art of storytelling, there is no greater important detail than the setting. The environment of a
story is the glue that grounds the characters together, the fertile valley in which the plot is cultivated
and grown, and the often the core influence that forwards the narrative. The classic Gothic literature
works of Horace Walpole s Castle of Otranto as well as Anna and John Aikin s Sir Bertrand both are
stories that have not only their plots bound and driven by their settings, but have their dark and
horrifying moods created by the environment as well (Walpole 586)(Aikin and Aikin 589). In these
two stories, and most other forms of literature, the environment is the essential driving force that both
creates the tones of the stories and advances the plot by forcing the reader into an environment they
are unfamiliar with.
One of the most common settings in Gothic literature, which also can drive forward the plot, is an old
medieval castle. Horace Walpole s Castle of Otranto is not an exception to this trend. Almost
immediately after Manfred tries to force Isabella to marry him, she tries to escape from the castle but
can not since the building is so well fortified. If she had been inside of just a large house instead, then
it would have been easier to escape. Since she could not find normal way out of the castle, she was
forced to locate another way out. If she had escaped earlier then she would not have found the secret
tunnels that she used to escape, therefore

Persepolis Feminist Essay
Authors often use themes in their works to divulge some of their personal experiences, beliefs, or just
simply a topic they desire to write about. Written in the early 2000s, Marjane Satrapi s coming of age
story about herself as a young girl living in Iran during the Iran Revolution, otherwise known as
Persepolis, includes a vast majority of themes including warfare, religion, freedom versus
confinement, and finally, femininity. One of the major themes that really stuck out was feminism and
women oppression. Although Satrapi includes feminism in her novel, she does not consider herself a
feminist; she calls herself a humanist. The purpose of this essay is to explain how Marjane Satrapi
incorporates feminism in her novel Persepolis despite the fact that she considers herself a humanist. ...

In other words, humanists tend to focus more on the importance of just being human rather than any
underlying aspects of being one. For instance, humanists care more about the value and needs of being
a human instead of religious beliefs or human desire. Marjane Satrapi, author of Persepolis, considers
herself a humanist. It is a human coming of age story, let s go for the humanity and humanism, it s a
much better thing than this womanhood and manhood and I don t know hermaphrodite hood, and etc.,
etc. (ABC News Questions for Marjane Satrapi ). Marjane Satrapi rejects the assumption that she is a
feminist and that her book is a feminist novel. She states that her book does not come from a gender
perspective; there is no he or she involved. Her book relates to everyone and anyone who may find
themselves in a similar situation. For example, young Marjane wanted to become a prophet when she
grew older, but her dream was seen as unrealistic because she was a woman. Young Marji wanted to
become a prophet because she wanted men and women to

Oppositional Defiant Disorder Research Paper

Oppositional Defiant Disorder
Oppositional Defiant Disorder is a tricky diagnosis when it comes to teens. Let s face it, a whole lot of
teens are defiant by nature, so let s take a closer look at this complex disorder. At times, even the best
brightest will defy the rules, push limits, and challenge authority. It is the nature of adolescence. The
difference between normal adolescent rebellion and O.D.D. is that teens with this disorder will thrive
on pushing buttons creating conflict. When it comes to teens with oppositional defiant disorder, it s all
about control and power.
Every parent/child relationship has a give take when it comes to the endless power struggle of
parenting, but O.D.D. teens take things to a more severe level. ... Show more content on

This is where parenting a teen with Oppositional Defiant Disorder gets tricky.
Let s talk about two major tools you can use when struggling with setting limits and the power
struggles that come along with Oppositional Defiant Disorder.
First, pick your battles. Now, I m not saying let a teen get away with anything, by now most of you
realize that I m all about teaching teens personal responsibility, but, when you know that the outcome
is going to be conflict, you have the option of picking the best time and place for this battle. If
delaying an argument is the best option to get your teen out the door and onto the school bus, push the
pause button, let it go temporarily, and come back to the situation when time is on your side. This gets
your teen out the door and keeps them on task, and it allows both sides time to reflect on the situation.
Second, know what rules bend and what rules break. In an ideal world, all rules would be followed,
without issues, but this is the really real world, and a parent that knows when to be flexible is going to
have less conflict, and is less likely to find themselves caught up in a power

Factors that have enabled Brazil to become a rapidly...
INTRODUCTION
Brazil is the largest country in the South American continent, and it is amongst the 12 largest
economies of the world. It possesses vast natural resources and offers remarkable ecological diversity,
majority of its 192 million inhabitants now live in urban areas (Griffiths, A and Wall, S. p 609). The
country also possesses a diversified industrial and agricultural sector and In 2001, the contribution of
the agricultural sector to GDP was 9.3%, while that for industry and services was 33.9% and 56.8%
respectively (Pereira, L 2004).
At around the same time, Jim O Neill, the head of global economic research at Goldman Sachs, coined
the acronym BRICs to refer to Brazil, Russia, India, and China, the emerging market ... Show more

It was rather centred around the de indexation of the Brazilian economy, which was accomplished in
most part by converting salaries and a number of other prices in the months preceding the
implementation of the Real Plan into Real Value Units (URVs), which were then linked to the dollar
(Ferrari Filho, F 2001). Source: www.inflation.eu
Fig. 1 Illustrates Brazil s battle with hyperinflation
These policies enabled Brazil to get monthly inflation rates down from 45% during the second quarter
of 1994 to an average of less than 1% in 1996 (Inflation.eu 2012). As a result the economy grew by
6% percent in 1994, and by 4.2% and 2.9% in 1995 and 1996, respectively (Clements, B. 1997) as
domestic demand increased fuelled by lower inflation and higher real wages. The successful
implementation of the Real Plan not only helped stabilize the economy , it also showed real economic
discipline necessary to attract the foreign capital and investment.
The combination of bringing inflation down and provoking expansion in demand in the short term
resulted in domestic savings dropping sharply to 17.9% of GDP in 1995, from 21.5%, in 1993
(Cinquetti, C 2000), this forced the government to slow the economy down by controlling domestic
credit and increasing the real s interest rate. The result of the high interest rate and capital account
liberalization was short term

A Discussion Of Archetypes In The Lamb And The Tyger
Innocents over Experience
A discussion of the archetypes in The Lamb/ the Tyger A questioned asked by all of us is used in both
poems, Doust thou know who made thy? (Lamb L2)We all wonder who made us and are some of us
made with innocents like a lamb, or made like a Tyger experienced. Can a Lamb and Tyger be similar
or are they completely different? The Lamb by William Blake represents the animal as godly and
innocents. While The Tyger William wonders who or what could make something so evil or so cruel.
William Blake the author of both The Lamb and The Tyger have greater meanings behind these poems
then the innocents of the Lamb and the evil characteristics of the Tyger by using archetypes. The

Unlike The Lamb the author only questions who made thy tiger. Did he who made the lamb make
thee? (Line 20) asks Blake seeming almost dumbfounded that someone who made such an innocent
lamb could make and animal as fearful as the tiger. The tigers portrayed as an evil creature and that it
was made completely different then the lamb, the tiger is seen as experienced and sinful unlike the
innocents of the lamb. The question in The Tyger is never answered, Blake only questions did god
make you like the lamb or where you created by someone else? Are humans like a lamb or a tiger, can
we be categorized in the two or can we be both? People are born a lamb and can be a lamb their whole
life or become a tiger. People who are lambs seem to be soft spoken, or Gave thee such a tender voice.
(Line 7) A lamb is seen as someone innocent that can be trusted; while someone who s a tiger many
won t trust because they don t dare to compete. What immortal hand or eye, Dare frame thy fearful
symmetry? (Lines 23 24) asks Blake. We are all born innocent but what we do after is our own chose,
we can chose to live innocent or we can be outspoken like a

Reflective Speech On Nutrition
At 4:50 every Tuesday my mom, aunt, and myself we meet up on the track to walk and burn a few
calories. We began to stretch my aunt makes a comment she starts to tell us how she sees
improvement in her weight and she mentions that she even gets better sleep. As we are walking my
mom said, I have more energy at work the next day when I work out during the evenings. After
walking the track for 30 minutes we walk the bleachers for 15 minutes I mentioned, I didn t feel like
doing the bleachers today, and they motivated me telling me it will all pay off in the end. So, I decided
to do the bleachers. After we complete the bleachers, we take a 5 minute water break as we take out
water we meet a lady name, Miss. Lisa, she asked if she can walk with us and of course we told her
yes. Miss. Lisa told us that she was weighing 220 pounds and her goal was to reach 140. We continued
to walk around the track discussing our weight issues. My aunt said, before all these months and
weeks of walking the track and eating healthy. I weighed 340 pounds and I now weigh 210, and my
set goal is 130. We all tell her we believe in you.
Now, we have 40 minutes remaining to walk. Everyone is a bit quiet now, I tell them to come on
ladies we have to pump it up, so we can get these 40 minutes over in no time! They still haven t
noticed that I was taking notes on my phone, well they probably won t notice they most likely think
that I m texting someone or playing on social media. We have 10 minutes

  • 2. Ongka s Big Moka The 1976 documentary film Ongka s Big Moka is a prime example to explicate the resemblance of gift economy and creditor debtor relationship with regard to interest. Moka is a ritual of gifting in tribes of the Mount Hagen area in Papua New Guinea. Pigs as well as other live stocks, cassowaries, scarce pearl shells, and as the modern civilization gradually penetrates into the tribes, cash and automobiles are given away at the ceremony. Giving away food and gifts is translated to status and rank. The greater the value of the gifts and the scale of the feast are, the greater the power it brings to the host of the moka. The receiving tribe tries to repay the gift to recover its prestige by hosting another moka with more generous gifts and a more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The receiver of the gift is better off in a utilitarian sense, if he chooses not to return the favor. Yet why does he have the desire to repay? Why does receiving a gift put him at a social disadvantage? The economy of gift of Bataille differs from Nietzsche s creditor debtor relationship with regard to the psychology behind these two dynamics. While Bataille delved into the mentality of the giver, who has the upper hand in this power relation, Nietzsche focused on the psychology of the debtor. Bataille construed the economy of gifting as an act out of man s animal factor that goes beyond the want of acquisition a human instinct to win and to overpower. It is in man s nature to covet prestige, glory and rank (Bataille, 1997, p. 376), yet they do not come without comparison and competition. Thus, the giver of the gift has to deliberately create a rivalry, and thus, an inequality that favors himself in order to acquire prestige, glory and rank. It is this desire for superiority that gives man the ultimate incentive to give away his wealth. Gifting is to win by losing. It also explains the increment value in the return of the gift, for the receiver of the initial gift not only wants to recover his equality with the initial giver, but also to overpower him, to defeat him. The same desire that fuels the endless cycle of gifting rituals like moka and potlatch. One good potlatch deserves another, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Absolute Monarchy, The Baroque, Baroque And The... The absolute monarchy, the Baroque style and the Scientific Revolution were very critical movements during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The similarity and difference of these three movements marked the beginning of early modern Europe and their interaction with each other made a huge influence on political and social reform in European countries. The one thing common in the absolute monarchy, the Baroque style and the Scientific Revolution was that they all stood for the end of the Middle Ages. The absolute monarchy started a new regime with the centralized power and the King of supreme. The Baroque period generated a new form of art to worship the Church and the absolute authority. The Scientific Revolution led to a new era with a different world view and the development of rationality. However, these three movements built on one another and impacted the society in different directions, which will be discussed in the following. The absolute monarchy was a political system reform in order to deal with social turmoil. It was developing across Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Around the middle of the seventeenth century, France experienced a religious strife that the various Parlements and the nobility started the revolution against the monarch. The Parlements and the nobility asked for the right to claim the power and weaken the King s regime. The nobility threw France into turmoil by pillaging and affrighting the innocent people. Under ... It is because a ballad uses repeated words and phrases, including refrain, to advance its story (Kirzhner and Mandell, 2000). In the ballad Robin Hood and the Three Squires, Robin Hood goes to Notthingham. Along the way, he hears of the three men who are sentenced to death for killing the king s deer and begins to devise a plan to save them. In the end, he manages to save them while the sheriff is hung. He thinks that killing the king s deer is not serious compared to the crimes such as burning parishes and killing ministries, and they do not deserve to die. He is not afraid to face the authorities in order to save the old woman s sons. Furthermore, he is very clever to think of such a brilliant strategy to save the three men. He disguises himself as an old man and offers to be the hangman for the day. He manages to persuade the sheriff to allow him to blow his horn, calling his men. I also think that he is very generous, because he is willing to spend as much as twenty pieces of gold just to execute his plans. Not only that, he is willing to exchange his own clothes with the rags the old man is wearing. However, I think that he should not hang the sheriff. Though the sheriff may have done a lot of despicable things, he should not be killed. There are a lot of ways to bring the sheriff into justice, and killing him is not an option. Taking one s life is a very serious matter. When one takes the life of another, he would have to bear the burden for the rest of his life. Moreover, killing the sheriff means that Robin Hood would have another crime pinned on him. As his crimes add on, the penalties will become more severe. • 6. How Far Can It Be Argued That Popular Culture Is... The Marxist concept of ideology is used to express the way in which the dominant group in a society controls the norms and values of that society at the level of ideas. As they own and direct the production of popular cultural products the dominant group are able to present their ideas as both normal and natural and `so mystify the `real conditions of existence (Hall.1992.p348). In this way the group holding power exercises maximum control with the minimum of conflict. The general population accepts the status quo as inevitable, and revolution is avoided. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Feminist theory shares much common ground with Marxism and many of the ideas of European Marxists have been appropriated and used by feminists. It has been suggested that this is particularly true of the ideas of Althusser and Gramsci (Gramman and Marshment in Strinati.1995.p180). Both of these theorists place emphasis on the idea of ideology as a means of control. Althusser suggests that ideology is not merely inherent in popular cultural practices but becomes `material practice (Storey.1998.p97) and a part of daily existence. For Althusser ideology is found in the customs, traditions and patterns of behaviour of everyday life in such a way that social actors are not aware of their participation in the acceptance and propagation of the ideas of the most powerful group in society. Using Althusser s theories feminists may suggest that a tradition such as the celebration of Mother s Day can be seen as valourizing that particular role for women, while failing to recognize any other. This may lead women to see the maternal role as the most important one for them in society, thus serving the interests of the dominant male group by encouraging women not only to become mothers, but also to assume the position of primary child carers. Such an interpretation suggests that many traditions and customs are to a large extent ideological. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the developing world family members provide 60% to 80% of long term care of their elderly significant others (American Psychological Association, 2012). The plena, another typical form of Puerto Rican music, was considered the singing newspaper. Themes for the music came from the idiosyncrasies and normalcies of daily life, and was incorporated through a narrative verse taken from the Spanish music culture through call and response . Call and response, another African influence, is a component of traditional African musical expression in which a phrase is sung (chanted by part of a group of people and that phrase is responded to by a refrain by the other part of the group. Call and response is a component of the bomba, the plena, and the danza and still exists today as an important ingredient of Puerto Rican music. It facilitates dialogue, and encourages a sense of community by enabling more people to join in, which then closes the gaps between classes and races (Waxer, Oct. 29). The third traditional form of Puerto Rican music is the danza. • 11. How Parchman Reflects The Intertwined Themes Of Reform And... Analyzing how Parchman reflects the intertwined themes of reform and race, we must look back into the history of the state, to see what caused the instability that led to reform and the role that citizens played. The Civil War is just ending and the South lost not only did they lose the battle , but they also lost their family members, homes, land and most of all for some they lost their slaves. During the war Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all slaves in territories that opposed the Union. Oshinsky paints a beautiful picture of the scenes that had unfolded when he wrote that, Few could escape the consequences of this war. Mississippi was bankrupt. Its commerce and transportation had collapsed. The railroads and levees lay in ruins. Local governments barely functioned. (p.12) The world that many white southerners had come to know was now destroyed. Being placed under these conditions, outraged many white southerners. Adding fuel to the fire, the fact of knowing that former slaves were now equal to even the poorest of whites, did not set well. The author states that, this hatred had many sources. The ex slave had become a scapegoat for the South s humiliating defeat. John F.H. Claiborne, Mississippi s most prominent historian, blamed him for causing the war and for helping the North to prevail. William Wallace was born in 1270 s in Scotland, but not much is known about his childhood but that he lived with his father, Sir Malcom Wallace, on a small piece of land in Scotland. (BBC) and (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica) This is dock number one on the movie. Although some may say, Shame on you Hollywood, for making up the childhood of this remarkable history hero , At the time of Wallace s childhood, Scotland was starting its decline into succession when it was taken over by England. Therefore, the stories could, in fact, be true, although no evidence proves it. As Wallace grew up he learned how to fight battles logically, which overtime made him grow very respected with the men he met. He was taught to think before he would speak. He was a natural born leader and would hold his position firmly. This led to battles won where he had very few men, but a very passionate and trusting crew because Wallace was their leader. In 1296, the king of England, Edward I, took advantage of the succession in Scotland and declared himself as ruler of Scotland with English administration. Beethoven s Sonata 3, Opus 69 nears a close with a texture that was heterophonic, dynamics that go from forte to piano and a bright tone color for cello and piano. The melody remained conjunct with a contour that was wavelike, by ascending and descending, especially for the piano. Western countries have feared that Iran wants to acquire the atomic bomb since they have discovered its nuclear program in 2003. From that moment Iran has been considered as a real threat by the USA. But in fact the relations between these two countries have begun about 150 years ago and have not always been tense. The first relations were also cordial and useful for both parties. Iran used the US help to develop its education and industry, notably its oil industry, and the USA found an ally in the Middle East. So why Iran came to be perceived as a threat to the US and is it still a threat? Firstly we will focus on the beginning of the relations between the two countries. Then we will see how the Islamic revolution in 1979 radically changed the relationships. We will also examine the current issue of the Iranian nuclear program. Finally we will try to understand the foreign policy and the intentions of Tehran. 1. • 26. Glyphosate And Roundoup Lab Report Blepharisma Unaffected by Glyphosate; Killed by RoundUp INTRODUCTION Blepharisma (Blepharisma japonicum) is a protist found in fresh and saltwater. Runoff is a common problem in lake water, particularly RoundUp. The active ingredient in RoundUp is glyphosate. Glyphosate works by blocking the synthesis of proteins in certain plants, subsequently killing them (National Pesticide Prevention Center, 2010). Because of this finding, it was assumed that glyphosate would have a similar effect on microbes. The purpose of this experiment was to observe the effect of different concentrations of glyphosate and RoundUp on blepharisma. The goal was to examine the environment found in Wisconsin lakes and measure the effect that runoff has on microorganisms in nature. The hypothesis of the experiment was that if glyphosate is added to the environment then blepharisma will move across the field diameter slower. METHODS Preparing Glyphosate and RoundUp Solutions Solutions of glyphosate and RoundUp were prepared at several concentrations. The concentrations of glyphosate made were 1%, 25%, 50%. Thing is, in Holes, everyone called him Armpit. We never actually knew what his real name was, but now we do. You might be curious about his nickname Armpit, where did that come from? Well one day at Camp Green Lake Juvenile Correction Center, Theodore aka Armpit, got stung by a scorpion and the pain gradually traveled up through his body and stayed at his armpit. ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT ENERGY IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS Abstract This report discusses the role of energy in sustainable development goals. The report highlights on the target set by the United Nations and the time frame given to achieve these targets. Some of the challenges hindering sustainable development especially in the poor sections of the population and measures needed to be taken have also been identified. It concludes with the primary principles and basic practices needed to be taken in order to achieve the sustainable development goals. Introduction Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Brundtland report, 1987). This really emphasizes on the needs and the idea of limitations often related to the world s poor on how to bridge the gap of needs and the environment (including climate) now and the future. Basically, it elaborates on the equality of the life between the rich and the poor (that is, how the poor can be on par with the rich) in terms of standard of living. Also, it draws attention to the use of green technologies in order to build a better and brighter future. I believe this cannot be achieved easily, therefore the possibility of achieving this can be very low, but with strong initiatives and plans, the bridge can be narrowed. An effective tool for this can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Essay about Ontological Argument Critique The existence of God is a much debated philosophical argument that has mystified philosophers since the age of the Enlightenment. Many of the different arguments put forth and analysed though, have not adequately proven God s existence. Although in order to move forward, failed arguments must be studied to ensure that mistakes are not repeated. One such argument is the Ontological Argument. This argument was first recorded by St. Anslem (1033 1109). Descartes adapts this argument in the fifth meditation in Meditations on First Philosophy. He first establishes that whenever he thinks about a triangle, there are certain properties that must be present in order for the form to be a triangle. Further even if perhaps no such figure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since no such island actually exists, Gaunilo concludes, therefore, that the argument does not prove God s existence. However, Descartes addressed Gaunilo s objection stating simply that whilst an island is a contrived thought, his triangle is not. The properties of triangles can be obvious and discoverable truths; they can be proven despite the thinker. On the other hand, the perfect island may vary, based on the thoughts of different people. Thus, to link God with thoughts of an island is flawed (Cardinal, et al, 2005). Another philosopher, Charles Hartshorne held that an island was a contingent entity that can endure termination by nature. God is a necessary as he is unaffected by nature. Thus, the two entities fail to relate to each other adequately. (Grim, 1983) As the weakest of the objections, Gaunilo does appear to have missed the point of the Ontological Argument. He mistakenly likens his island to God when, this is rather more akin to Descartes triangle or, more so, his mountain and valley. An island needs to be completely surrounded by water in order to be called an island, just as every mountain must have a valley. To remove these properties will remove something meaningful from these entities; Descartes claims existence is an essential attribute of God. However, the crux of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Reign Of Peter The Great The reign of Peter the Great has been a source of considerable historical debate for many contemporary and traditional historians. Especially, the transformation he made to Russian culture, politics and economic, which arguably changed the foundations of society. Thus, the interval of some three hundred years has allowed us to access Peter the Great s reforms more accurately but we must consider that Russia during the late 17th century existed in different ethical and social circumstances to our own contemporary society as to make it almost a foreign civilisation. Judgements about Peter the Great using today s political and moral perspectives may have to be tempered unless we are accused of historical and cultural relativism. Therefore, we must be careful in analysing the impact that his many reforms caused and the lasting nature that they had on the very foundations of Russian society. Through his reign Peter revolutionised his country, reorganizing and strengthening the state and army, conquering new territories and building new navy, a seaport, and a new capital in St. Petersburg 1. The most significant change, Bushkovitch argues, was his campaign of Europeanisating Russia s culture which saw the introduction of all forms of Western advancements emerge into the society and by 1725, Russia had achieved the aim of entering on the European stage. The ultimate objective was to at least equal if not surpass other European states while joining them in their great power ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. Horace Walpole s Castle Of Otranto In the art of storytelling, there is no greater important detail than the setting. The environment of a story is the glue that grounds the characters together, the fertile valley in which the plot is cultivated and grown, and the often the core influence that forwards the narrative. The classic Gothic literature works of Horace Walpole s Castle of Otranto as well as Anna and John Aikin s Sir Bertrand both are stories that have not only their plots bound and driven by their settings, but have their dark and horrifying moods created by the environment as well (Walpole 586)(Aikin and Aikin 589). In these two stories, and most other forms of literature, the environment is the essential driving force that both creates the tones of the stories and advances the plot by forcing the reader into an environment they are unfamiliar with. One of the most common settings in Gothic literature, which also can drive forward the plot, is an old medieval castle. Horace Walpole s Castle of Otranto is not an exception to this trend. Almost immediately after Manfred tries to force Isabella to marry him, she tries to escape from the castle but can not since the building is so well fortified. If she had been inside of just a large house instead, then it would have been easier to escape. Since she could not find normal way out of the castle, she was forced to locate another way out. If she had escaped earlier then she would not have found the secret tunnels that she used to escape, therefore ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Persepolis Feminist Essay Authors often use themes in their works to divulge some of their personal experiences, beliefs, or just simply a topic they desire to write about. Written in the early 2000s, Marjane Satrapi s coming of age story about herself as a young girl living in Iran during the Iran Revolution, otherwise known as Persepolis, includes a vast majority of themes including warfare, religion, freedom versus confinement, and finally, femininity. One of the major themes that really stuck out was feminism and women oppression. Although Satrapi includes feminism in her novel, she does not consider herself a feminist; she calls herself a humanist. The purpose of this essay is to explain how Marjane Satrapi incorporates feminism in her novel Persepolis despite the fact that she considers herself a humanist. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In other words, humanists tend to focus more on the importance of just being human rather than any underlying aspects of being one. For instance, humanists care more about the value and needs of being a human instead of religious beliefs or human desire. Marjane Satrapi, author of Persepolis, considers herself a humanist. It is a human coming of age story, let s go for the humanity and humanism, it s a much better thing than this womanhood and manhood and I don t know hermaphrodite hood, and etc., etc. (ABC News Questions for Marjane Satrapi ). Marjane Satrapi rejects the assumption that she is a feminist and that her book is a feminist novel. She states that her book does not come from a gender perspective; there is no he or she involved. Her book relates to everyone and anyone who may find themselves in a similar situation. For example, young Marjane wanted to become a prophet when she grew older, but her dream was seen as unrealistic because she was a woman. Young Marji wanted to become a prophet because she wanted men and women to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Let s face it, a whole lot of teens are defiant by nature, so let s take a closer look at this complex disorder. At times, even the best brightest will defy the rules, push limits, and challenge authority. It is the nature of adolescence. The difference between normal adolescent rebellion and O.D.D. is that teens with this disorder will thrive on pushing buttons creating conflict. When it comes to teens with oppositional defiant disorder, it s all about control and power. Every parent/child relationship has a give take when it comes to the endless power struggle of parenting, but O.D.D. teens take things to a more severe level. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is where parenting a teen with Oppositional Defiant Disorder gets tricky. Let s talk about two major tools you can use when struggling with setting limits and the power struggles that come along with Oppositional Defiant Disorder. First, pick your battles. Now, I m not saying let a teen get away with anything, by now most of you realize that I m all about teaching teens personal responsibility, but, when you know that the outcome is going to be conflict, you have the option of picking the best time and place for this battle. If delaying an argument is the best option to get your teen out the door and onto the school bus, push the pause button, let it go temporarily, and come back to the situation when time is on your side. This gets your teen out the door and keeps them on task, and it allows both sides time to reflect on the situation. Second, know what rules bend and what rules break. In an ideal world, all rules would be followed, without issues, but this is the really real world, and a parent that knows when to be flexible is going to have less conflict, and is less likely to find themselves caught up in a power ... Source: www.inflation.eu Fig. 1 Illustrates Brazil s battle with hyperinflation These policies enabled Brazil to get monthly inflation rates down from 45% during the second quarter of 1994 to an average of less than 1% in 1996 (Inflation.eu 2012). As a result the economy grew by 6% percent in 1994, and by 4.2% and 2.9% in 1995 and 1996, respectively (Clements, B. 1997) as domestic demand increased fuelled by lower inflation and higher real wages. The successful implementation of the Real Plan not only helped stabilize the economy , it also showed real economic discipline necessary to attract the foreign capital and investment. The combination of bringing inflation down and provoking expansion in demand in the short term resulted in domestic savings dropping sharply to 17.9% of GDP in 1995, from 21.5%, in 1993 (Cinquetti, C 2000), this forced the government to slow the economy down by controlling domestic credit and increasing the real s interest rate.
