This dialogue is symbolic of Brick s decision to take an ideal past over an uncertain future. The `click
in Brick s head is his escape; it echoes the click of the phone when he hung up on Skipper. It means
that he doesn t have to face the truth anymore just like he didn t with Skipper. The alcohol leads to the
click and the click leads to escape. At the end of the play, Maggie removes both of Brick s crutches
until he satisfies her physically in trying for a baby. This is symbolically forcing Brick to face the
future before wallowing in the past.
In A Streetcar Named Desire, one of the first things Blanche does when arriving at Elysian Fields is
look around for some liquor (Streetcar p.120), just as she looks for an escape from her own past. This
symbolism puts new meaning in Blanche s line [looking down at the glass, which shakes in her hand]:
You re all I ve got in the world, and your not glad to see me! it leaves one wondering whether she is
talking to Stella or to the liquor at this point.
Both Brick and Blanche have idealised their pasts beyond reach. Brick sums this up, stating, those

Generation Gap Between Mother And Daughter
I feel that the relationship between mother and daughter is a strained one, with the obvious love and
care for each other marred by the obvious generation gap between the two, the lack of understanding
and perspective and fixed expectations that the mother sets.
Firstly, the mother sets fixed expectations for her daughter. As seen in the start of the passage, she has
already planned out her daughter s future and expects her to follow it, thinking about how now (her
daughter) can be a doctor, make big money, find a good husband . She also tells Ah Kow that her
daughter was going to be a GP without confirming with her if that was what she really wanted. It

The differences between two generations become apparent when the mother talks about the lantern
that the daughter lost years ago. On one hand, the mother is still upset about the lost of the lantern but
the daughter however, is confused as to why she is bringing it up and asks her to forget about it, and
instead desperately tries to convince her. In the end, the mother says to the daughter, Your problem is
that you don t value what you have. You have something valuable, but when you lost it, you say
Forget it, never mind. When I lose something, it makes me gek sim, for always. The daughter, being
inexperienced and young, has not gone through the hardships or challenges that the mother has. This
makes it difficult for her to understand true value of things, just telling herself to forget about it. The
mother is afraid that the daughter would suffer without the guidance of her parents as she is still
foolish and has not experienced life s hardship but the daughter does not understand why the mother is
being so worried, thus causing their relationship to be further

Blind People Myths
Now, there are many myths that people hold about blind people. Some of the myths that the narrator in
Cathedral holds are, This blind man, feature this, he was wearing a full beard! A beard on a blind man!
Too much to say (Cite). Much to contrary belief, blind people s hair still grows the same as anyone
else s hair as long as they don t have any other disease that would interfere with hair growth. Another
myth that our narrator thinks is when he says, But he didn t use a cane and he didn t wear dark glasses.
I d always thought dark glasses were a must for the blind (Cite). The reality is, not all blind people
carry a cane or wear dark glasses. However, there are many reasons why most blind people choose to.
Blind people, just like any other person needs to protect their eyes from UV sun rays, and because
they are blind they cannot tell where they are looking at the sun or not, therefore the sunglasses help in
this way. Another reason a blind person might wear sunglasses is for aesthetic reasons, as was read in
the story the narrator wished that Robert would wear the dark sunglasses, he says: Fact was. I wished
he had a pair. At first glance, his eyes looked like anyone else s eyes. But if you looked close, there
was something different about them. Too much white in the iris, for one thing, and the pupils seemed
to move around in the sockets without his knowing it or being able to stop it (Cite). With wearing
