Ambivalence In Bless Me Ultima
Voice and Ambivalence in Bless Me Ultima and Baby of the Family
Bless Me Ultima and Baby of the Family serve as the coming of age stories of two minority
children. Rudolfo Anaya and Tina McElory Ansa skillfully reveal the richness, diversity, and
conflicts that can exist within the Hispanic American and African American culturesprimarily
through the dream sequences in each novel. Dreams are the mechanism used in each work to
magnify the individual experiences and conflicts Tony and Lenaencounter. In addition and perhaps,
more importantly, Tony and Lena deal with ambivalence and find their voices not only through the
relationships with other characters, but through the resolution of their dreams.
To truly fathom how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is especially true for Tony in BMU as he is torn on a myriad of levels. Is he Marez or Luna?
Is he a future Catholic priest or vaquero? Tony verbalizes the quandary he is in when he asks,
What life will I choose (Anaya 41)? Through Tony s dreams, the depth of the ambivalent dilemma is
elucidated.
From the very first dream in the novel, a stage is set for the ambivalent theme. Tony is
witnessing a birth of a child who, barely out of the womb, is being fought over like the spoils of
war. Would this child be tied to the earth as a Luna or free upon it as a Marez (Anaya 6)? Only
the strange woman who helped deliver the child will know his destiny (Anaya 6). This is Tony s
central quandary, and the woman represents the feasibility of a middle road. At this point,
however, Tony can only visualize two paths. As each successive dream is revealed, it becomes
increasingly clear that Tony cannot simply fit into a specific niche. There seems to be a connection
between his history and future, whereas he must either decide an old way or create a new path that
will unite his people.
Moreover, there is a layering of irresolute issues in the dream sequences. Interwoven in the conflict
of choosing his mother s path of the Lunas or his father s path of the vaqueros, is an ambivalence
about religion. There is no ultimate Christian or mystical force in the novel. Wood notes that Tony s
father s connection

Essay about The Powers of Satan in Paradise Lost
The Powers of Satan in Paradise Lost Since the beginning of Paradise Lost, a reader can witness
the dramatizing power possessed by Satan, and how he takes advantage of this very power in
order to satisfy his own causes. One such property of Satan s fantastic powers is his ability to
manipulate any individual into a false belief of who he really is, and therefore prevent a habitant
of paradise from discovering his true purpose that is hidden behind his actions. One such example
of this, and one of the most major in the epic, are the events that occur in Book IX involving Satan
and Eve around the forbidden tree. Here, Satan uses, what is to Eve, excellent reasoning to convince
her to eat the forbidden fruit, thereby exploiting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though her beauty momentarily stuns him and he, for the time remained stupidly good,
his dedication to his vengeful cause prevails, and allows him to continue his appropriate plan. It
is this same dedication that throughout Satan s conversation with Eve, he does not allow her to
retreat back to Adam in order to lose such an ideal situation. Initially, Satan s actions with Eve
involve little effort to convince her that he is not any evil demon that Adam told her to expect
on her voyage. Simply, he uses his ability to flatter Eve in order to gain her attention and trust, an
essential objective if he was willing to destroy mankind (p. 248 249 lines 540 548): #8230;By
gift, and thy celestial beauty adore, With ravishment beheld #8230; #8230;who shouldst be seen
A Goddess among Gods, adored and served By Angels numberless, thy daily train? Using this
flattery to compliment her beauty, and allowing her to recognize the fact that all of Eden s
animals adore her, he slyly inserts the proposition that will allow her to become greater in power
and being, A Goddess among Gods, rivaling the omnipotent power possessed by God. Satan came
in the form of a snake, the only reptile and animal that could have the ability to pluck the forbidden
fruit from the tree. When questioned how he attained the ability to talk and interact, he simply
answered that he ate the fruit of the tree, and received the knowledge equal to that of a human.

Modern Day Slavery Research Paper
Although slavery ended on December 6, 1865, it still exists in different forms in the United
States. Modern day slavery consists of child labour, sex trafficking, bonded and forced labour,
domestic servitude, and forced marriage. Two of the most common types of slavery in the States
is made up of many underage workers and immigrants who came here to find a better future.
Migrant workers is a widespread form of slavery, but is often not considered to fit the standard
definition of slavery. This is a problem that should seriously be dealt with.

Controlling Health Care Benefits Costs
Controlling Health Care Benefits Costs The topic that I will be discussing is Health Care
Benefits Costs. There are several different trends in the health care field that are used in
business. Major issues and obstacles are also very big regarding Health Care Benefits Costs.
Controlling Health Care Benefits Costs is a very important topic that is trending today
throughout the world. Health Care benefits costs are a systematic approach to estimating the
strengths and weaknesses of alternatives that satisfy transactions, activities or functional
requirements for a business. It is a techniques that is used to determine options that provide the
best approach for the adoption and practice in terms of benefits in labor, time and cost savings
(Cost Benefit Analysis). Some companies compromise help with medical costs. This depends
on the company s policy. Either the employees can compensate a fee to disregard the health care
plan, while the company may choose to pay for the whole bulk of the best. Also, the company
may pay for everything. Employers often provide employees with sort of group medical
insurance, with the level of coverage depending on the status of the employee (Cost Benefit
Analysis). Part time employers have less of a privilege to receive benefits than full time
employers. Most companies offer managed care health coverage through HMOs and preferred
provider organizations, PPOs. HMO stands for Health Maintenance and PPO stands for Preferred
Provider

Customer Relationship Management ( Crm )
Businesses in today s world face many obstacles on the road to success. They have to have sound
business plans, solid product or services to offer, and they have to generate revenue to keep their
businesses running. In order to achieve these things, a business needs to know what the customer
wants from them. Many companies have come to realize that customers and the service they
receive are very important in expanding their brand. Because of that recognition, most businesses of
the twenty first century have developed customer relationship management(CRM) initiatives to
better relate to their customerbases. What does customer relationship management (CRM) mean?
Kurtz defines CRM as a set of strategies and tools that companies use to learn about customers
(Kurtz, 2015, pg. 211). One strategy that companies use is training their employees in customer
service and customer appreciation techniques. A company s employee is often the first point of
contact for many customers, either in the business to business world or in the consumer
marketplace. In this regard, an employee can be considered as the face of the company for that
customer. So, a well trained employee in consumer relations can lead to huge dividends down the
road for that company. Another key CRM approach is the efforts of businesses to enter the social
media world. Social media has allowed customers to provide instant feedback about the goods and
services they received. In the past, a company only had to worry

The Voice From A Birdcage
The Voice from a Birdcage A brave woman sang a sombre song from inside a birdcage in the late
19th century. As a novelist and also a well known feminist, Charlotte Perkins Gilman fearlessly
spoke up about her conception, freedom, in her masterpiece, The Yellow Wallpaper . She
proposed big issue divorce around that time. In this semi autographical story, she describes her
conflict of marital discord. Gilman intertwines her frustrations about a relationship with her
husband and depicts the distress through many symbols, so that people should be aware what
genuine happiness as a human being is. Through the relationship between Else and John, Gilman
pointed out that females are given a disadvantage by their husbands. For example, she explains
that John stands high because of his social status as a physician and a husband. Gilman illustrates
this situation through the symbolism of the wallpaper; two breadth didn t match one is a little
higher than the other (768). Another example is that Else is eager to live on the first floor
because she can see the beautiful garden from the window, but John keeps her on the second floor
even though they should move all the furniture from the first floor. Who is willing to carry all the
heavy furniture such as a bed, a mattress, a dining table and chairs to upstairs only for three
months? John s decision is quite unreasonable. However, John s long absence is the most
frustrating for her. John goes out all day, and sometimes he stays in

The Role Of Gender Challenging Role Models
The use of gender challenging role models in the classroom is a method I am going to use during
my final professional practice and during my year as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT). I am
going to use these demonstrate to both girls and boys that the media depiction of success is not
accurate and that success can be measured in various ways. Role models such as Marie Curie,
Dian Fossey and Mary Anning are good historical figures to use but children could see these as
dull despite their achievements. Although I do consider the use of these women as role models
important, I feel that a role model who children can relate to and that they see in everyday life
would be more successful in challenging genderstereotypes. To encourage girls ... Show more

The importance for teachers to be positive role models is set out by the government in the Teachers
Standards (Department for Education, 2011). I believe, as a male teacher, that there is an extra
responsibility for me to model gender neutrality. I believe it is important for the boys in my
classroom have both a positive masculine role model and a male figure in their life that is not
afraid to embrace so called feminine aspects of life. I would like the boys in my classroom to
understand that there are not boy jobs and girl jobs both in school and at home. I will model this
by explaining my role at home; doing the dishes, hoovering, ironing and being a family man;
activities that some may see as not very masculine. I will show that there is no such thing a girly
colours by wearing a pink shirt from time to time. Most importantly I would like to challenge boys
perception that education is feminine. Although research totally refutes the assumption that boys
attainment improves when they are placed with a male teacher (Drudy, 2008; Francis et al, 2008;
Read, 2010), There seems to be a particular kudos that some male teachers get from children.
Whether this is due to their minority status in primary education (National Union of Teachers,
2016) or due to masculinity being given a superior social standing (Skelton, 2011a). Consequently,
it important for male teachers to use this

How Did Geography Affect Ancient China
In ancient times, the geography of ancient river valleys affected the growth and success of a
civilization. Ancient Sumer and Ancient China were strongly changed by the geographic features
they had around them. Many river valleys during this time, including Ancient China and Ancient
Sumer, developed around rivers. These rivers gave the civilizations fertile soil, which lead to a
surplus in food, for farming foods and crops was the most common way to grow food for families.
Rivers also gave people water and other resources that were necessary for living during this time.
Sumerdeveloped around two rivers, the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers. These rivers flowed parallel
to each other and the land in between the rivers was called Mesopotamia. This land had very fertile
farm soil and therefore many people in the civilization of Sumer settled in Mesopotamia. In China,

Differences Between America And France And The French...
Bonjour, Prime Minister, cheese, wine and affairs; these single words all come together to give
you a peek into the French way of life. There are many similarities and differences between
America and France and the way that their societies have shaped the people who live there. From
the way we live, to the morals when it comes to marriage and family. To go into greater detail, I
will share with you some of the traditions, social customs and the roles of the French society.
The French Government is set up similarly to our own. Our forefathers used the systems of
government from the French government to create what we use now in America. France is ruled by
a Republican government; also known as the French Republic. They have what is equal to a
President, but the title used more prominently is Prime Minister. The Prime Minister of France
today is Manuel Valls. In addition, the Prime Minister has a Council of Ministers at his aid to help
organize and structure the government. The French are exceedingly controlling and rule governed
people. Their uncertainty avoidance is rated at a high level, meaning that they like to have their
rules and a foundation. As said in the article What About France , it articulates that The French don
t like surprises. Structure and planning are required. Before meetings and negotiations, they like to
receive all necessary information. As a consequence, the French are good in developing complex
technologies and systems in a stable environment, such

In 1967 African American civil rights leaders brought attention to the mediocre education that black

Electroconvulsive Therapy Argumentative Essay
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), formerly known as electroshock therapy, is a treatment for
mental illnesses that runs small electric currents through the brain, with the intention of bringing
on a brief seizure. The goal is to change brain chemistry to reverse symptoms of certain mental
illnesses. During the 1940s 50s, ECT was the most effective way of treating certain mental
illnesses and was used frequently throughout many countries (Kendell, 1982). One of the main
illnesses ECT is used for is depression, but it is also used for other mental illnesses, such as mania
and some cases of schizophrenia. Patients undergo ECT about three times a week, totaling six to
twelve sessions. This is an important topic to research because ECT is known to... Show more

Although ECT is shown to be effective, it does not always mean that is a safe form of treatment. If
ECT causes patients to have severe brain damage and cognitive deficits, it would be considered
unethical to use, regardless if it an effective form of treatment for certain mental illnesses
(Reisner, 2003). There are limitations to ECT that doctors need to be aware of, such as patients
having existing medical conditions that could counteract with ECT treatment and cause damage to
the patient. Informed consent is an important process in undergoing ECT, it should let the patient
know all of the risks and all of the benefits of ECT. Many have suggested that although the risk of
brain damage is reported to be low, it is still an important deciding factor for a patient who is
eligible for undergoing ECT. Informed consent should include risks, benefits, acknowledge post
treatment risks and confusion, the possibility or uncertain effects of the treatment, as well as
alternative options (Reisner, 2003). Because a risk of a treatment is not always certain, it should
still be required to inform a patient of the possible effects of the treatment they are undergoing, due
to the minimal possibility that brain damage or death could still

How Did Karen Horney Contribute To Psychology

Horney did just that. She paved the way for women around the world to make it far in life.
Karen did her best to prove that women do make a difference in the world and can be just as
beneficial as men. Starting out she was forced to live a life of depression and struggle, but unlike
most she turned it into a future (Boeree, 2012). Living her life on the path of discovery, Horney
wanted to work out different ways for people to cope with life struggle, rather than push them

with her life of misfortunes (Langenderfer). Neurosis is defined as a mild mental illness that is

temperament (Langenderfer). With Horney s past being considered, psychologists were able to
gear their research around children, in hopes of taking away their anxiety (Ingram, 2012). Having
this knowledge made it easy for a psychologist to work with children while showing parents how
the challenges can affect their child in the long run. The study of neurosis was one of Karen s
psychic disturbances brought on by fears and the patients attempt to put them aside (Langenderfer).

each year (NAMI, 2016). Unfortunately, no matter how real mental illness is, it has not shaken the
stigma or gained the proper attention from the health care system and insurance companies it needs
to be able to treat and prevent psychotic episodes. Often times, the communities idea of helping the
issue is by removing the affected from society, or ignoring the problem altogether. For those
afflicted with mental disorders, it has lead to discrimination, homelessness, and even suicide. As the

Basic Functioning Principle of a Satellite Communication...
1.Introduction
In today s ultra modern civilization, with features like wireless communications, high definition
television broadcasting and Internet access almost in any point of the world the use of the so
called telecommunication satellites is unavoidable. The continuous growth of the satellite industry
is due to the fact of the many advantages of it, like low costs, big covered areas, possibility of
broadcasting and many others. In the present project there will be presented the basic functioning
principle of a satellite communication system, the structure of it and some of the most used
applications in the real life.
An object which revolves around a planet on an elliptical or circular path is called a satellite.
A communication satellite is an artificial satellite, which is sent to the space for the purpose of
telecommunications. It actually reflects (or relays) a radio signal coming from a ground station
back to the Earth, to the receiving side, using a transponder, which is a receiver and a transmitter of
radio signals. The main components of the satellite consists of the communication system,
containing the transponders and the antennas which receive and transmit the radio signals, the
powering system, made of solar panels (which collect the sunlight and transforms it into electrical
energy), and the propulsion part, which includes the rockets that move the satellite. The whole
system also contains the two ground stations, from them one transmits the radio signal,

Who Is The Puritans In The Crucible
In today s world, people are very accepting. However in early America, Puritans pushed others to
be perfect which resulted in pressure. Puritan literature such as: The Scarlet Letter, the Crucible,
and the speech, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God are some of the most popular of this
genre. The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a story of a women who made a
fatal mistake and had to pay for it by public shaming. The Crucible is a play by Arthur Miller
written of a town in hysteria because of a false belief of witches. Lastly, Sinners in the Hands of
an Angry God, by Jonathan Edwards, is a speech given that started the Great Awakening using fear
to convert the Puritans from their evil ways. Throughout these pieces, it is obvious that there is
correct and incorrect ways for people to deal with others sins. In early America, Puritans dealt with
it incorrectly because of clouded judgment from fear,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his sermon, Edwards produced fear of God in the Puritans by showing the fiery floods of the
fierceness and wrath of God that will rain down on them if they continued in their sin ( Edwards

come down on them because of his great mercy and love (2). The speech described that the
waters are constantly rising and waxing more and more mighty; and there is nothing but mere
pleasure of God that holds the waters back (2). As people keep on sinning, God s wrath was
risen and it was only God s love and grace that kept the people from death. Edwards stated that
only if they repented would God s anger not throw them into hell. Edwards convinced the people
to have a change of heart because the fear of God. Ultimately Edwards used these vivid metaphors

Summary Of America s Ice Age
The documentary America s Ice Age presented a lot of information, some of which I already
knew. However, I also learned a lot of new information, and still have questions about some of
what I learned. I learned that nearly two thirds of North America was covered in ice when the
largest glaciers were around, and that these glaciers contained 39 thousand cubic miles of water.
I also learned that the glaciers left chatter marks, grooves in bedrock caused by glacial plucking,
on the top of Bear Mountain, 1280 feet above sea level, which meant that 17 million cubic miles
of ice covered North America, equaling about 68 thousand trillion tons. I also learned that a coral
stone quarry was found six miles from the current coast in Florida, and one mile down from the...

I knew that both lateral and terminal moraines are formed when rocks and sediment are moved by
glaciers, and that these moraines are left on the sides and front of glaciers, respectively. To me, this
suggests that the rocks could only be deposited in lateral moraines, or in the terminal moraines if
the glacier stops, changes directions drastically, or decreases in weight severely. If none of this
occurs, the boulders will continue to be pushed. Therefore, the boulders mark the farthest
outreach of one glacier, as long as no smaller glaciers occurred afterwards. One question that I
have is: how long did it take for the largest glaciers to retreat to approximately the size of our
glaciers today, if it ever did? Even though the movie repeatedly showed an digital animation
showing the amount of snow and ice coverage in North America, the digital animation didn t have
any sort of a time scale. This animation showed that the glaciers covered most of North America,
then retreated at some point, and increased in coverage again. I still am curious about how long it
took for each of these transitions to

The Pros And Cons Of A DNA Database
A DNA data base is a very helpful but potentially dangerous tool that has been recently considered
by the US, but has faced some controversy. In practice a DNA database would contain profiles and
potentially samples of every citizen s DNA. The DNA profile, while not extremely revealing in
itself, has been called out as a privacy violation. While it has its benefits the privacy issue will not
disappear so we must explore both options before we can make a decision about a DNAdatabase.
While controversy exists for a DNA database, the US possessing such a resource could possibly be
one of the greatest advantages our government has ever possessed. Many times in crimeshows you
see a miracle DNA identification, but in reality there is less than .1% of our population recorded
in such a fashion. With a nationalized DNA database it would be substantially easier to solve
many crimes where DNA presents itself. It would also create a way to ID people even when they
provide false papers or identity. Though perhaps the greatest point in favor of a national database is
the simple fact that if your innocent you... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

consider the public image of this move when we are basically saying to the parents of newborns
We require DNA samples in case your child grows up to be a criminal . There is also the chance
of the DNA database being compromised and outside hands getting ahold of the sensitive data. As I
mentioned before, the profiles themselves are not terribly revealing beyond DNA, but there are
companies around the world that would pay millions for that kind of data

Meher Baba Silence Essay
Having seen Meher Baba s observations and reasons for his silence through his own words, now
one can see some interesting observations made by individuals who were close to Meher Baba in
the Interpretations of Meher Baba Silence Eruch recalls that very often people used to ask about
Meher Baba s long silence. Most frequented question was when He intended to break it. As if
answering to this question, one day in 1954 in answer, He just stopped using His alphabet board

In silence one can get clarity about one s visions and wishes, one s patterns of thinking and
feeling and how one acts in one s world. Silence can be a tool which helps one know and
experience fully who am I and what one s purpose in life is. In the modern world there is hardly
ever complete silence. People also avoid silence and even seem to be afraid of it. There is
always some background noise, whether that is traffic, music or a TV. It is difficult for some of
us to be in silence because it so clearly brings us face to face with our own identity. This becomes
awkward because so often one plays a role and is embarrassed or ashamed to face the real one.
One is not in peace with oneself so one tries to keep the mind busy with different kinds of input
so that one does not have to think of who am I . Speech is the biggest consumer of one s energy,
the easiest way of dissipating one energy. When talking one uses a lot more oxygen than when
one is in silence. Excessive talking causes energy burnout and mind gets overheated which then in
turn has effects on one s reactions. One becomes angry and impatient due to which one is not able
to act calmly, coolly or rationally anymore. Also listening to people who talk a lot takes a lot of

Men s National Soccer Team Failure Essay
The United States of America Men s Soccer team failed to qualify for the World Cup.For the first
time since 1986 the USA did not qualify for the World Cup due to the Team s failure. The 2017
Team has not only let down the previous men s team, but the fans as well. Their horrifying
performance is a sign that they did not deserve to qualify anyway.
As stated by Brian Phillips, for the New York Times, this loss shows the lack of progression of
the program. For years United States soccer fans have clung on to the idea that the Men s National
Team was in a positive progression stage. That the Team was on the brink of finding their groove.
This lost to Trinidad and Tobago, the worst team in the CONCACAF, has revealed the unwanted
truth. The Men s National Soccer Team is a joke.
Landon Donovan, an American soccer star, said that The lack of urgency to really understand
what was it stake was really disheartening for me and candidly it was really hard to watch.
Donovan is right the lack of urgency from the team was alarming. I mean they only had to score
three goals against the worst team in their hexagon. They only scored one for the USA and one for
Trinidad and Tobago. While, Bruce Arena, the former head coach, stated Nothing has to change.

My Experience Of Playing Basketball
The first time I played basketball was like the first time finding myself. I started playing basketball
when I was very young and I fell in love with it. I was really really good from a young age, I had an
innate ability to play basketball. I had fun dribbling and doing all the dirty work, I liked the running
and playing defense I loved every aspect of the game. The first experience I remembered was when
I was in 4th grade and it was the champion ship game against Lakeland. Lakeland was always super
good and before this game we never have gotten even close to them in score. This game was
different. It was 32 28 our lead and we had 2 mins left. I remember Lakeland only had one good
player and I was guarding him, it was the hardest challenge of my life because this kid was the best.
I was guarding him and he shot a 3 and somehow it went in so now the score was 32 31 with about
a minute left. We had the ball and we were dribbling up the court but somehow, they got the ball
back and scored so now the score was 33 32 their lead. My coach (my step dad) calls a time out and
brings us together and says now boys this is the closest we have ever gotten to beating this team so
let s not let it slip away everyone looked at each other and we knew we had to do something. So,
we made a play so I could score to win the game. I was so nervous; the play was called 2 . the play
would start at the top of the key and I would have to run up to the elbow and then someone
would come and pick for me and I would do a back door. We tried the play in practice a couple days
prior to this game but we never put it in action. So, the time out ended and we went back on the
court. my heart was beating and my legs were shaking. So, we bring up the ball and we all get in
position, now there is about 40 seconds on the clock and we wait a little bit before we start the
play to take some time off the clock. But then finally the point guard yells out 2 and my heart
drops even more. but I do what I m supposed to and pop up and then here comes the screen. I set
my guy up the cut back door. I got a perfect pass from my team mate and I go up for the shot and I

The threat of nuclear war in the 1950 s was real and was one that was on the mind nearly every
person in both the United States and the United Kingdom. After the end of the Second World War
the world can be seen to be split into two sides, the East and the West, Communism and

as the United States become paranoid of the Communist East, and after the Soviets had made their

handsome and rich guy, Bateman has very little problems attracting females. He would have sex
with countless prostitutes and then Through Bateman, Ellis was calling out how sex was too
easy in the American culture. It was a game. For example there was an instance in the text where
Bateman admitted to not even knowing the name of a girl he was about to engage in sexual acts

The three that benefited the presentation the most would be the use of personification, similes,
and alliteration. The strongest literary device was personification and that was pretty much the
point of the whole speech. That animals have human like characteristics and animals were
capable of thinking and feeling. Safina gave all the animals the human traits that they deserve.
In this oral essay, he proved to the audience that animals could do everything humans do and
there was no difference between the two. He stated that they even have the same skeleton as us
(Safina, Carl. What are animals thinking and feeling? Carl Safina: What are animals thinking
and feeling? | TED Talk | TED.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 05 July 2017. .) to back his point up. The
next literary device that he frequently used was similes, Or, a comparison using like or as. One
of the most powerful similes that he used was our brain is as big as a chimpanzee. (Safina, Carl.

us a comparison that we could all think about and know what he was talking about. We often think

Immigration In Charles Mee s Big Love
Charles Mee s Big Love is one of many recent reinterpretations of ancient myths with a modern
twist. A central point in both Big Love and Aeschylus The Suppliants is the issue of the outsider.
The suppliants, or immigrants, in both plays are seeking refuge from the practice of intermarriage
in their supposedly barbaric homeland, however they receive a rather harsh reception in Argos. The
concept of immigrationwas an incredibly prevalent issue in ancient Greecewith the start of the
establishment of the Delian Leagueproviding a new national identity, and immigration remains an
important issue today. Throughout history there has always been anger simmering under the
surface of the immigration issue due to fear of the other. In The Suppliants , the danaids are
described as a sun burned race (Aesch. Suppl. 155) with Nile burned cheeks (Aesch. Suppl. 71). In
Mee s reinterpretation the women again appear different from the general Greek populous, and are
treated differently upon their arrival because of that fact, showing an intolerance for immigrants
that persists into modernity. In The Suppliants the Danaids differences from the natives of Argos
extend even further since: not only do they look different, but also the Danaids sound different and
have different customs. In the opening choral song, they supplicate hilly Apia (i.e. Argos), and ask
it to pay good attention to our foreign speech (karbanos auda) (Aesch. Suppl. 117 19). Later they

Health Care for Migrant Farm Workers Essay
Although agriculture is one of the most hazardous jobs in the United States, there is a huge gap in
healthcare for those that work in the industry. Due to the large migrant and seasonal worker
population, especially those from Mexico, it is a hard population to reach when it comes to
healthcare needs. Fear, language barriers and cultural norms are all barriers that need to be
addressed for this special population. (Holmes 2011) Agriculture is one of the most hazardous
occupations in the United States. In 2000, there were 780 deaths and 130,000 disabling injuries in
agriculture. The only industry that had more deaths was construction, with 1,220. (Hansen and
Donohoe 2003) Migrant workers face numerous barriers to medical care, including... Show more

These results are useful for targeting injury prevention efforts and future research needs for this
unique worker population. (Wang, Myers et al. 2011) Those that experience food insecurity and
hunger are at an increased risk for occupational injury and illness when compared to those that
were food secure. (Borre, Ertle et al. 2010)Food insecurity by definition is the lack of access at
all times to enough food for an active and healthy lifestyle due to socioeconomic and
environmental barriers. Hunger is the lack of access to sufficient food and eating regularly to
prevent both stomach pain and the desire to eat. (Borre, Ertle et al. 2010) Out of the study
participants, 63.8% were found to be food insecure and 34.7% of those experienced hunger.
(Borre, Ertle et al. 2010)In addition to studying food insecurity and hunger, this paper also looked
at the prevalence of overweight and obesity in the children of these farm workers. The majority of
interviewed participants cited that they were concerned about obesity and the related health
problems. It was found that food secure families were more likely to have children with overweight
and obesity than those families that were food insecure. This study illustrates the extreme health
disparities related to diet in the MSFW population that needs to be addressed. The Migrant Head

Essay On Police Militarization
My topic is the militarization of police forces within the United States. I feel as if this is a very
important topic within the Criminal Justice System that needs to be addressed.
Even without paying strict attention to the news media, a person will still find it difficult to avoid
hearing stories about heavily armed SWAT teams, smashing in a door in the dead of night, just to
search for drugs. It is a practice that is becoming more and more common. And as it becomes more
common, so do the horror stories associated with it: mistaken identities and needlessly ravaged
homes, unnecessary shootings of both people and pets, flashbang grenades being detonated near
infants, etc. America s neighborhoods are not a battleground, it s citizens are not enemy
combatants, and it s police are not soldiers.
There are some very fundamental and very important differences between the military and the
police. The armed forces exist in order to protect the country by engaging an enemy in combat,
often on foreign ground. The goal of the military is to physically destroy this enemy; it s soldiers
are trained to kill. Take the eleventh line of the U.S. Army s Soldier s... Show more content on

Male Dominance In A Streetcar Named Desire
In numerous relationships between a man and a woman, there is generally a controlling figure
that is dominant above the other. It may be woman over man, man over woman, or in what the
proper definition of a marriage is an equivalent partnership and companionship. In the play A
Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, Stanley is one example of male dominance;
evidently the more dominate figure over Stella. Throughout the play there are copious examples
of the authority he possesses of her. Williams Portrays Stella as a modest girl who lives around
in Stanley s world. In his perspective he sees Stella as his homemaker, who stays home to prepare
his meals and take care of him. She does what he wants and pleases, obtains his abuse yet loves
him. Stanley extends his dominance over Stella by mistreating and abusing his position and his

Risk Factors for Multiple Sclerosis
Familial and heritability studies have suggested a role for genetics in MS (11, 12). According to
these studies, MS does not result from gene mutations or aberrations; rather, polymorphisms in a
number of genes may predispose people to MS. These polymorphisms act independently and each
can contribute a little. Several studies have identified susceptibility genes on chromosome 6p21 and
17q22 in the coding regions for major histocompatibility complexclass II (MHC II) (11 14). Also
the interleukin 7 receptor (IL 7R) gene alteration (15 17) and two single nucleotide polymorphisms
within the interleukin 2 receptor alpha (IL 2Ra) coding region have been linked to MS risk (18).
Pathophysiologically, these polymorphisms might have effects on the immune system.
There is no doubt that genetics has revolutionized our understanding about the human diseases.
Regarding MS; however, the practical application of these data has not been acquired yet. Gene
screening for finding patients prone to MS, is neither ethical nor scientifically supported.
In another way, genetic engineering might find some ways to treat MS or prevent further
worsening of the disease. This might work as a secondary or tertiary prevention strategy. Gene
manipulation in cell therapy studies have been experimented in animal models. This type of
researches, not directly based on the mentioned genetic background of MS, shows the effects of
administering genetically engineered cells in correction of some pathogenetic

Correlational Method
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the correlational method as a means for examining the
relationship between functions of the left and right hemispheres. I will compare the performance
of people with intact brains with the performance of so called split brain patients. In many ways,
the brains of these two groups are very similar. 1a. The location of the brainstem in the normal brain
is near the lower back of the brain, where the cerebrumand spinal cord connect. The brainstem is
separated into three parts. One is the midbrain, which regulates temperature, and is a part of vision,
hearing, motor movement, sleep cycles, and alertness. Next is the pons, which controls sleep,
respiration, the bladder, hearing, taste, posture, and facial... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However, future investigations may need to adopt techniques that improve upon those used here.
5a. Since brain function is lateralized between the two hemispheres of the brain, normal patients
should display a greater relationship between functions usually occurring in the left hemisphere and
those performed by the right hemisphere. So in split brain patients, the relationship between
hemispheres performing tasks that require to different hemispheres of the brain would be much
weaker. The correlational analysis is consistent with the hypothesis because the correlation
coefficients for normal brain patients are much higher than the correlation coefficient coefficients
for split brain patients when each group performed tasks that required two different hemispheres of
the brain. 5b. All the results readily fit the hypothesis. 5c. To improve the correlational study, a
researcher should increase the sample size and include more tasks, such as mathematical
calculations, reading skills, and creativity, to further test each hemisphere in the brain for both
types of patients. 5d. Correlational studies should not be used to test hypotheses because they
cannot verify whether or not one variable causes another. Correlation is not the same as causation,
since the results have a likelihood to be due to chance. Experiments allow us to manipulate and
isolate variables to ensure causation. 5e. Another experiment that can be used to test our hypotheses
would be to take four cognitive tests such as math problems, family facial recognition, music
recognition, and a reading test first covering the left eye and then the right eye for a group of
normal patients and split brain patients to test their abilities. I think the normal patients will do far
better in all the tests than the split brain

A Project Manager For The Success Of Acer Inc.
I Worked with Nokia Solutions Networks as a Project Manager for many years. Acer is one of the
largest telecommunication companies in the world. Over the years, the company has emerged
from a small local business to become successfully global. Its visionary founder took into account
its difficult path as the best way in which the company could prosper towards the acquisition of the
global market. As Barrow (2011) contends, one of the factors that has promoted the success of Acer
Inc. is the proper financial systems and budgetemployed in the managementof its finances. For
example, in 1976, it was founded with a capital of US$25ooo, but has grown steadily to become a
multibillionaire company, together with its other close competitors (Barrow, 2011).
Running a company often requires carefully planning and review of finances. Various studies reveal
that most companies use other forms of accounting mainly for measuring, identifying, analyzing,
and reporting their financial information. In spite of making tremendous success, proper financial
budget planning is still important for the development and success of Acer Company. In this way,
accounting tools may include financial statements, forecasts, and other may be employed. Proper
budget planning is important to the business in the following ways. Firstly, through the budget,
detailed information on the analysis of how the company anticipates spending its finances, in future
times can be revealed. Proper budget planning limits

Aspirin Therapy For Vascular Disorders
Aspirin Therapy for Vascular Disorders
Physicians across the country agree that daily use of aspirin for prevention of vascular disorders
is controversial (Neale, 2014). Dr. J. Jaques Carter of Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel
Deaconess Medical Center in Boston admits that he used to recommend a daily aspirin to all of his
middle aged adult patients, regardless of vascular disease risk factors being present, as it was
standard procedure at the time (Neale, 2014). Dr. Len Horovitz of Lenox Hill Hospital in New
York City explains that the FDA guidelines regarding routine prescription of aspirin for men and
women over age 55 and 65 respectively have changed as studies have demonstrated the greater risk
of GI bleeding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This paper will explore the benefits and risks of routine use of aspirin therapy in the treatment of
vascular disease and prevention of its concurrent complications. According to Burchum Rosenthal
(2016) five major risk factors for heart disease are age, gender, cholesterol levels, blood pressure,
and smoking status . If you fit this profile, a daily aspirin might be recommended as you are at
high risk for having your first heart attack, may have had a heart attack or stroke in the past and as
long as you do not have a history of bleeding or clotting disorders (Mayo Clinic, 2016). The
benefit of a daily aspirin would be to prevent platelets from sticking together and forming a
blockage where a vessel is damaged due to disease or lifestyle or may be narrowed from fat
deposits or atherosclerosis (Mayo Clinic, 2016). VanWormer et al. (2012) proposed that aspirin
therapy is actually under utilized by high risk patients and over utilized by those at low risk for
cardiovascular disease where the risk of bleeding is greater than the possible benefits. Having
limited data regarding the sociodemographic variables of aspirin use, VanWormer et al. (2012) set
about creating a study to evaluate these variables among adults in Wisconsin without a history of
cardiovascular disease. Using guidelines for aspirin use established by the US Preventive Services

Gulliver s Travels By Johnathan Swift
Gulliver s Travels is a travel book written by Johnathan Swift. Gulliver s Travel was published in
1726. Johnathan Swift is a satirist. A satirist is a writer who uses humor, irony, or ridicule to expose
and criticize people s stupidity. Swift goes on a journey throughout the boo. During the journey,
Johnathan exploits humanflaws in his travel book. Gulliver travels into four imaginary lands. Each
of the four books provide social and political commentary. Swift created this book to get a buzz.
Swift swaps the roles of animals and humans. Horses, or the Houyhnhnms, have the ability to
reason, but lack the ability to show emotion. These animals are organized and intelligent. They
live freely and are not confined. On the other hand, the Yahoos have the outer appearance of
humans, but are ignorant. The Yahoos have a confined living space and lack their ability to
reason. Swift chose to twist the roles of these figures to show the evident flaws of humans. One
major theme in Gulliver s Travels is human flaw. Humans are very ignorant, selfish, and jealous.
Swift makes it very apparent that humans are chaotic beings. In Gulliver s Travels, Swift takes
away the one trait that humans abuse. Humans have the ability to reason. Although humans have
the ability to reason, this ability is not always used for good. Swift wants the human society to
recognize their ways and work to be better. Instead, of society being competitive and petty, it is
important for society to work together as.

  • 2. Ambivalence In Bless Me Ultima Voice and Ambivalence in Bless Me Ultima and Baby of the Family Bless Me Ultima and Baby of the Family serve as the coming of age stories of two minority children. Rudolfo Anaya and Tina McElory Ansa skillfully reveal the richness, diversity, and conflicts that can exist within the Hispanic American and African American culturesprimarily through the dream sequences in each novel. Dreams are the mechanism used in each work to magnify the individual experiences and conflicts Tony and Lenaencounter. In addition and perhaps, more importantly, Tony and Lena deal with ambivalence and find their voices not only through the relationships with other characters, but through the resolution of their dreams. To truly fathom how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is especially true for Tony in BMU as he is torn on a myriad of levels. Is he Marez or Luna? Is he a future Catholic priest or vaquero? Tony verbalizes the quandary he is in when he asks, What life will I choose (Anaya 41)? Through Tony s dreams, the depth of the ambivalent dilemma is elucidated. From the very first dream in the novel, a stage is set for the ambivalent theme. Tony is witnessing a birth of a child who, barely out of the womb, is being fought over like the spoils of war. Would this child be tied to the earth as a Luna or free upon it as a Marez (Anaya 6)? Only the strange woman who helped deliver the child will know his destiny (Anaya 6). This is Tony s central quandary, and the woman represents the feasibility of a middle road. At this point, however, Tony can only visualize two paths. As each successive dream is revealed, it becomes increasingly clear that Tony cannot simply fit into a specific niche. There seems to be a connection between his history and future, whereas he must either decide an old way or create a new path that will unite his people. Moreover, there is a layering of irresolute issues in the dream sequences. Interwoven in the conflict of choosing his mother s path of the Lunas or his father s path of the vaqueros, is an ambivalence about religion. There is no ultimate Christian or mystical force in the novel. Wood notes that Tony s father s connection ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Essay about The Powers of Satan in Paradise Lost The Powers of Satan in Paradise Lost Since the beginning of Paradise Lost, a reader can witness the dramatizing power possessed by Satan, and how he takes advantage of this very power in order to satisfy his own causes. One such property of Satan s fantastic powers is his ability to manipulate any individual into a false belief of who he really is, and therefore prevent a habitant of paradise from discovering his true purpose that is hidden behind his actions. One such example of this, and one of the most major in the epic, are the events that occur in Book IX involving Satan and Eve around the forbidden tree. Here, Satan uses, what is to Eve, excellent reasoning to convince her to eat the forbidden fruit, thereby exploiting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though her beauty momentarily stuns him and he, for the time remained stupidly good, his dedication to his vengeful cause prevails, and allows him to continue his appropriate plan. It is this same dedication that throughout Satan s conversation with Eve, he does not allow her to retreat back to Adam in order to lose such an ideal situation. Initially, Satan s actions with Eve involve little effort to convince her that he is not any evil demon that Adam told her to expect on her voyage. Simply, he uses his ability to flatter Eve in order to gain her attention and trust, an essential objective if he was willing to destroy mankind (p. 248 249 lines 540 548): #8230;By gift, and thy celestial beauty adore, With ravishment beheld #8230; #8230;who shouldst be seen A Goddess among Gods, adored and served By Angels numberless, thy daily train? Using this flattery to compliment her beauty, and allowing her to recognize the fact that all of Eden s animals adore her, he slyly inserts the proposition that will allow her to become greater in power and being, A Goddess among Gods, rivaling the omnipotent power possessed by God. Satan came in the form of a snake, the only reptile and animal that could have the ability to pluck the forbidden fruit from the tree. When questioned how he attained the ability to talk and interact, he simply answered that he ate the fruit of the tree, and received the knowledge equal to that of a human. ... • 7. Customer Relationship Management ( Crm ) Businesses in today s world face many obstacles on the road to success. They have to have sound business plans, solid product or services to offer, and they have to generate revenue to keep their businesses running. In order to achieve these things, a business needs to know what the customer wants from them. Many companies have come to realize that customers and the service they receive are very important in expanding their brand. Because of that recognition, most businesses of the twenty first century have developed customer relationship management(CRM) initiatives to better relate to their customerbases. What does customer relationship management (CRM) mean? Kurtz defines CRM as a set of strategies and tools that companies use to learn about customers (Kurtz, 2015, pg. 211). One strategy that companies use is training their employees in customer service and customer appreciation techniques. A company s employee is often the first point of contact for many customers, either in the business to business world or in the consumer marketplace. In this regard, an employee can be considered as the face of the company for that customer. So, a well trained employee in consumer relations can lead to huge dividends down the road for that company. Another key CRM approach is the efforts of businesses to enter the social media world. Social media has allowed customers to provide instant feedback about the goods and services they received. In the past, a company only had to worry ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Voice From A Birdcage The Voice from a Birdcage A brave woman sang a sombre song from inside a birdcage in the late 19th century. As a novelist and also a well known feminist, Charlotte Perkins Gilman fearlessly spoke up about her conception, freedom, in her masterpiece, The Yellow Wallpaper . She proposed big issue divorce around that time. In this semi autographical story, she describes her conflict of marital discord. Gilman intertwines her frustrations about a relationship with her husband and depicts the distress through many symbols, so that people should be aware what genuine happiness as a human being is. Through the relationship between Else and John, Gilman pointed out that females are given a disadvantage by their husbands. For example, she explains that John stands high because of his social status as a physician and a husband. Gilman illustrates this situation through the symbolism of the wallpaper; two breadth didn t match one is a little higher than the other (768). Another example is that Else is eager to live on the first floor because she can see the beautiful garden from the window, but John keeps her on the second floor even though they should move all the furniture from the first floor. Who is willing to carry all the heavy furniture such as a bed, a mattress, a dining table and chairs to upstairs only for three months? John s decision is quite unreasonable. The Role Of Gender Challenging Role Models The use of gender challenging role models in the classroom is a method I am going to use during my final professional practice and during my year as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT). I am going to use these demonstrate to both girls and boys that the media depiction of success is not accurate and that success can be measured in various ways. Role models such as Marie Curie, Dian Fossey and Mary Anning are good historical figures to use but children could see these as dull despite their achievements. Although I do consider the use of these women as role models important, I feel that a role model who children can relate to and that they see in everyday life would be more successful in challenging genderstereotypes. The importance for teachers to be positive role models is set out by the government in the Teachers Standards (Department for Education, 2011). I believe, as a male teacher, that there is an extra responsibility for me to model gender neutrality. I believe it is important for the boys in my classroom have both a positive masculine role model and a male figure in their life that is not afraid to embrace so called feminine aspects of life. I would like the boys in my classroom to understand that there are not boy jobs and girl jobs both in school and at home. I will model this by explaining my role at home; doing the dishes, hoovering, ironing and being a family man; activities that some may see as not very masculine. I will show that there is no such thing a girly colours by wearing a pink shirt from time to time. Most importantly I would like to challenge boys perception that education is feminine. Although research totally refutes the assumption that boys attainment improves when they are placed with a male teacher (Drudy, 2008; Francis et al, 2008; Read, 2010), There seems to be a particular kudos that some male teachers get from children. Whether this is due to their minority status in primary education (National Union of Teachers, 2016) or due to masculinity being given a superior social standing (Skelton, 2011a). Consequently, it important for male teachers to use this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many river valleys during this time, including Ancient China and Ancient Sumer, developed around rivers. These rivers gave the civilizations fertile soil, which lead to a surplus in food, for farming foods and crops was the most common way to grow food for families. From the way we live, to the morals when it comes to marriage and family. To go into greater detail, I will share with you some of the traditions, social customs and the roles of the French society. The Prime Minister of France today is Manuel Valls. In addition, the Prime Minister has a Council of Ministers at his aid to help organize and structure the government. The French are exceedingly controlling and rule governed people. Their uncertainty avoidance is rated at a high level, meaning that they like to have their rules and a foundation. As said in the article What About France , it articulates that The French don t like surprises. Structure and planning are required. Following that summer, he declared the curse of physical shame was broken by the sun; I was no longer ashamed of my body. In 1967 African American civil rights leaders brought attention to the mediocre education that black students in high school were receiving and how it was not properly preparing them for college. Electroconvulsive Therapy Argumentative Essay Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), formerly known as electroshock therapy, is a treatment for mental illnesses that runs small electric currents through the brain, with the intention of bringing on a brief seizure. The goal is to change brain chemistry to reverse symptoms of certain mental illnesses. During the 1940s 50s, ECT was the most effective way of treating certain mental illnesses and was used frequently throughout many countries (Kendell, 1982). One of the main illnesses ECT is used for is depression, but it is also used for other mental illnesses, such as mania and some cases of schizophrenia. Although ECT is shown to be effective, it does not always mean that is a safe form of treatment. If ECT causes patients to have severe brain damage and cognitive deficits, it would be considered unethical to use, regardless if it an effective form of treatment for certain mental illnesses (Reisner, 2003). There are limitations to ECT that doctors need to be aware of, such as patients having existing medical conditions that could counteract with ECT treatment and cause damage to the patient. Informed consent is an important process in undergoing ECT, it should let the patient know all of the risks and all of the benefits of ECT. Many have suggested that although the risk of brain damage is reported to be low, it is still an important deciding factor for a patient who is eligible for undergoing ECT. Informed consent should include risks, benefits, acknowledge post treatment risks and confusion, the possibility or uncertain effects of the treatment, as well as alternative options (Reisner, 2003). Because a risk of a treatment is not always certain, it should still be required to inform a patient of the possible effects of the treatment they are undergoing, due to the minimal possibility that brain damage or death could still ... I knew that both lateral and terminal moraines are formed when rocks and sediment are moved by glaciers, and that these moraines are left on the sides and front of glaciers, respectively. If none of this occurs, the boulders will continue to be pushed. Therefore, the boulders mark the farthest outreach of one glacier, as long as no smaller glaciers occurred afterwards. One question that I have is: how long did it take for the largest glaciers to retreat to approximately the size of our glaciers today, if it ever did? Even though the movie repeatedly showed an digital animation showing the amount of snow and ice coverage in North America, the digital animation didn t have any sort of a time scale. While it has its benefits the privacy issue will not disappear so we must explore both options before we can make a decision about a DNAdatabase. While controversy exists for a DNA database, the US possessing such a resource could possibly be one of the greatest advantages our government has ever possessed. Many times in crimeshows you see a miracle DNA identification, but in reality there is less than .1% of our population recorded in such a fashion. I was really really good from a young age, I had an innate ability to play basketball. I had fun dribbling and doing all the dirty work, I liked the running and playing defense I loved every aspect of the game. The first experience I remembered was when I was in 4th grade and it was the champion ship game against Lakeland. Lakeland was always super good and before this game we never have gotten even close to them in score. This game was different. It was 32 28 our lead and we had 2 mins left. I remember Lakeland only had one good player and I was guarding him, it was the hardest challenge of my life because this kid was the best. I was guarding him and he shot a 3 and somehow it went in so now the score was 32 31 with about a minute left. We had the ball and we were dribbling up the court but somehow, they got the ball back and scored so now the score was 33 32 their lead. My coach (my step dad) calls a time out and brings us together and says now boys this is the closest we have ever gotten to beating this team so let s not let it slip away everyone looked at each other and we knew we had to do something. So, we made a play so I could score to win the game. I was so nervous; the play was called 2 . the play would start at the top of the key and I would have to run up to the elbow and then someone would come and pick for me and I would do a back door. We tried the play in practice a couple days prior to this game but we never put it in action. So, the time out ended and we went back on the court. my heart was beating and my legs were shaking. So, we bring up the ball and we all get in position, now there is about 40 seconds on the clock and we wait a little bit before we start the play to take some time off the clock. But then finally the point guard yells out 2 and my heart drops even more. but I do what I m supposed to and pop up and then here comes the screen. I set my guy up the cut back door. After the end of the Second World War the world can be seen to be split into two sides, the East and the West, Communism and Democracy. After the Second World War the Soviet Union became paranoid with the West as well as the United States become paranoid of the Communist East, and after the Soviets had made their first nuclear bomb this created massive friction between the NATO alliance and the Soviet Union and the eastern bloc. • 40. Immigration In Charles Mee s Big Love Charles Mee s Big Love is one of many recent reinterpretations of ancient myths with a modern twist. A central point in both Big Love and Aeschylus The Suppliants is the issue of the outsider. The suppliants, or immigrants, in both plays are seeking refuge from the practice of intermarriage in their supposedly barbaric homeland, however they receive a rather harsh reception in Argos. The concept of immigrationwas an incredibly prevalent issue in ancient Greecewith the start of the establishment of the Delian Leagueproviding a new national identity, and immigration remains an important issue today. Throughout history there has always been anger simmering under the surface of the immigration issue due to fear of the other. In The Suppliants , the danaids are described as a sun burned race (Aesch. Suppl. 155) with Nile burned cheeks (Aesch. Suppl. 71). In Mee s reinterpretation the women again appear different from the general Greek populous, and are treated differently upon their arrival because of that fact, showing an intolerance for immigrants that persists into modernity. In The Suppliants the Danaids differences from the natives of Argos extend even further since: not only do they look different, but also the Danaids sound different and have different customs. In the opening choral song, they supplicate hilly Apia (i.e. Argos), and ask it to pay good attention to our foreign speech (karbanos auda) (Aesch. Suppl. 117 19). Later they are concerned ... It is a practice that is becoming more and more common. • 46. Risk Factors for Multiple Sclerosis Familial and heritability studies have suggested a role for genetics in MS (11, 12). According to these studies, MS does not result from gene mutations or aberrations; rather, polymorphisms in a number of genes may predispose people to MS. These polymorphisms act independently and each can contribute a little. Several studies have identified susceptibility genes on chromosome 6p21 and 17q22 in the coding regions for major histocompatibility complexclass II (MHC II) (11 14). Also the interleukin 7 receptor (IL 7R) gene alteration (15 17) and two single nucleotide polymorphisms within the interleukin 2 receptor alpha (IL 2Ra) coding region have been linked to MS risk (18). Pathophysiologically, these polymorphisms might have effects on the immune system. There is no doubt that genetics has revolutionized our understanding about the human diseases. Regarding MS; however, the practical application of these data has not been acquired yet. Gene screening for finding patients prone to MS, is neither ethical nor scientifically supported. In another way, genetic engineering might find some ways to treat MS or prevent further worsening of the disease. This might work as a secondary or tertiary prevention strategy. The location of the brainstem in the normal brain is near the lower back of the brain, where the cerebrumand spinal cord connect. The brainstem is separated into three parts. However, future investigations may need to adopt techniques that improve upon those used here. 5a. Since brain function is lateralized between the two hemispheres of the brain, normal patients should display a greater relationship between functions usually occurring in the left hemisphere and those performed by the right hemisphere. So in split brain patients, the relationship between hemispheres performing tasks that require to different hemispheres of the brain would be much weaker. The correlational analysis is consistent with the hypothesis because the correlation coefficients for normal brain patients are much higher than the correlation coefficient coefficients for split brain patients when each group performed tasks that required two different hemispheres of the brain. 5b. All the results readily fit the hypothesis. 5c. To improve the correlational study, a researcher should increase the sample size and include more tasks, such as mathematical calculations, reading skills, and creativity, to further test each hemisphere in the brain for both types of patients. 5d. Correlational studies should not be used to test hypotheses because they cannot verify whether or not one variable causes another. Correlation is not the same as causation, since the results have a likelihood to be due to chance. Experiments allow us to manipulate and isolate variables to ensure causation. 5e. Another experiment that can be used to test our hypotheses would be to take four cognitive tests such as math problems, family facial recognition, music recognition, and a reading test first covering the left eye and then the right eye for a group of normal patients and split brain patients to test their abilities. A satirist is a writer who uses humor, irony, or ridicule to expose and criticize people s stupidity. Swift goes on a journey throughout the boo. During the journey, Johnathan exploits humanflaws in his travel book. Gulliver travels into four imaginary lands. Each of the four books provide social and political commentary. Swift created this book to get a buzz. Swift swaps the roles of animals and humans. Horses, or the Houyhnhnms, have the ability to reason, but lack the ability to show emotion. These animals are organized and intelligent. They live freely and are not confined. On the other hand, the Yahoos have the outer appearance of humans, but are ignorant. The Yahoos have a confined living space and lack their ability to reason. Swift chose to twist the roles of these figures to show the evident flaws of humans. One major theme in Gulliver s Travels is human flaw. Humans are very ignorant, selfish, and jealous. Swift makes it very apparent that humans are chaotic beings. In Gulliver s Travels, Swift takes away the one trait that humans abuse. Humans have the ability to reason. Although humans have the ability to reason, this ability is not always used for good.
