Unit 73: Sound For Computer Games
Game Title
Halo 3
Provide detailed descriptions from chosen examples that establish…
Setting
The setting for this scene is a space battle in the future. This is because of
the sound effects; spaceships go flying past the camera (0:22), you can hear
a character talk about one fleets strength against his own (0:30) and you can
hear what sounds like fighters in a dog fight (1:08).
Mood
The scene opens up with you feeling amazed. This is done by an air choir
opening up the scene making noises that resemble words like ‘wow’. At the
start of the second part of the video I get a feeling of an incoming fight
because the music turns into loud hitting drums and guitar. At (1:08) I realise
this is what’s really happening because you can hear a space battle occur.
This game is clearly a Sci-Fi game. This is because of the futuristic sound
effects of ships entering the field (0:04) and spaceships going past the
camera (0:22).
Game genre
Narrative
The narrative for this section is defined through musical, narration, directional
and ambient sounds. I believe that the setting is defined through ambient and
narration. I believe that the mood for this section is defined through music.
And finally, the game genre is defined though directional and ambient
sounds.
Clearly state what production technique(s)
you think have been used to create specific
soundtrack elements
I believe that field recordings would have
been used for the sound effects, and the
results would have been modified using VST
instruments. I also believe that in studio
recordings would have been used for the
narration and the results would have been
modified using VST instruments to give the
alien voices an alien feel to them.
I believe that in studio recordings would have
been used to make the music in both
sections.
