Book Banning Book
Everyone who has ever read a book has read a book by a banned author. Book banning has been
around for hundreds of years. People should be allowed to read whatever they choose. The ability to
read, speak, think, and express ourselves freely is a right, not a privilege
(Celebrate). Standing up for what people believe in is something they re taught to do at a bright,
young age; making sure people are capable of reading the literature they want is one of the biggest
controversies. No one should have the restriction of book banning forcing itself on their reading
choices. There are many things that go along with book banning, the history of how banning has come
to be, reasons why books are banned, how parents have become involved, and the importance ... Show

Many parents monitor what their child is reading. When something is brought home that they don t
agree with, this is when the anger comes out. Every parent believes the library s policies should be set
by the people (Berry). Parents believe when a book is threatening towards their child it should
immediately be removed from all shelves and forbid from being read by any other students. This
situation happens quite often, but in realization no child should be told what they are allowed or not
allowed to read by another student s parent. Some parents have even began to call them challenged
books because they believe the term is too harsh, and sounds too much like censorship. Once again the
term fear manifests itself; parents are extremely afraid of what their child can find in between the
pages of a book. Many of the times the parent will not read the book, but rather read the premise and
decide from there. Parents do not realize that the book they are reading could be the most important
books that child or teen could ever read. Words and ideas... will help them fight their monsters
(Finan). Children will never know how to be the best that they can be unless their parent s guide them
in the right direction, and that direction is towards the restricted section of the

Essay On Plant Sterol
Plant sterols used in CholestOff and other supplements were first shown to be effective in cholesterol
reducing several decades ago. According to a report published by healthy lifestyle magazine, New
Hope Network, sterols have been researched for their cholesterol lowering effects since 1950. Recent
studies tout sterols immune improvement capabilities and positive effect has potential cancer
preventatives along with its ability to treat benign pros hyperplasia. The prescription of anti
cholesterol drugs gained mass foothold when the National Institutes of Health (Nih) lowered the
acceptable cholesterol levels. The move drove over 20 million more Americans to anti cholesterol

between Pharmavite LLC and public health company, Meroux NutriSciences.
The results of the study reinforce previous findings that back clinical data, advocating for the use of
dietary supplements alongside making lifestyle changes. In 1999, a study looking at the effectiveness
of Reducol and low fat diet in lowering cholesterol levels was conducted by McGill University in
Montreal, Canada. In the study involving 32 subjects, patients who took 1.g a day of Reducol branded
sitosterol with sterol combination recorded a remarkable LDL reduction of up to 24% compared to a
reduction of 9% for those who relied on low fat diet. In the study, no remarkable increases in plasma
sterol were recorded, a fact that suggests the sterols were not absorbed.

Argumentative Essay
Argumentative Essay
The function of an argumentative essay is to show that your assertion (opinion, theory, and
hypothesis) about some phenomenon or phenomena is correct or more truthful than others . The art of
argumentation is not an easy skill to acquire. Many people might think that if one simply has an
opinion, one can argue it successfully, and these folks are always surprised when others don t agree
with them because their logic seems so correct. Argumentative writing is the act of forming reasons,
making inductions, drawing conclusions, and applying them to the case in discussion; the operation of
inferring propositions, not known or admitted as true, from facts or principles known, admitted, or
proved to be true. It clearly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Inductive logic arrives at likely conclusions by counting up evidence, while deductive logic arrives at
necessary conclusions by examining the logical meanings of statements. According to Purdue
University English Profession Neil Gill, deductive arguments can be grouped into two categories: A
Rogerian argument considers several viewpoints and selects the best one, whereas a Toulmin
argument presents a single, linear argument (i.e., A therefore B) in support of a position. Fallacious
Fallacious arguments are logical seeming arguments that are not valid. Unlike logical arguments,
fallacious arguments do not arrive at valid conclusions or inferences. There are literally dozens of
fallacious arguments you can commit; a fallacious argument style is one that commits one or more
fallacies frequently. For example, if a person in an argument persistently says, the economy went up
this year, therefore the party in power caused the economy to improve, that person is engaging in the
post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy, an invalid argument of the form x happened, y happened, therefore x
caused y. Social Argumentation Styles
Argumentation can be looked at in terms of the way the interlocutors perceive each other. According

Patrick Bateman And Narcissistic Personality Disorder
Personality disorders are pervasive in nature, and are depicted in various mediums from film to
novels. Narcissism will be discussed as it pertains to American Psycho; a film made in the early 2000
s to describe a man who lives a double life as a business man and serial killer. The main character in
particular, Patrick Bateman displays with themes of Narcissistic Personality Disorder and his case
along with the factors that are congruent with Narcissistic Personality Disorder will be discussed

personality disorder, more personality disorders will be briefly discussed at the end to show a well
thought out and comprehensive paper. DSM IV Classification of Narcissistic Personality Disorder for
Patrick Bateman The fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistics Manual describes personality
disorders as being a pattern of enduring behavior and internal experiences that tends to digress a
significant amount from the individual s cultural and societal standards (Sadock, Kaplan Sadock,
2015). This personality disorder is diagnosed in the presence of grandiosity and the need to be
admired and appreciated. There is a chronic lack of empathy as well as inflated self esteem and the
belief that one is entitled to the adoration of others. Narcissistic Personality Disorder is classified
under Cluster B, showcasing more erratic and emotional behavior which can be seen in the film
American Psycho. Patrick Bateman is a wealthy investment banker living in Manhattan in the late

The Rise Of The Gunpowder Empires
The rise of the west was a time in which European nations became more advanced and had an increase
of power and dominance. Europe became a dominant nation in the 16th Century while two large
Gunpowder empires began to decline. These European nations dominated because they had
technological advancements. Some of which were gunpowder, cannons, and much more. Both the
Ottoman and the Ming Empires rose to the top and then declined after the European nations began to
advance. The European Miracle was when the European nations began to advance in technology, they
expanded, and dominated the world. China was a very advanced civilization during the 16th Century
and rose to power. They had large libraries, conducted trade by using a series of canals. They also had
large cities and used paper money for trade. The Chinese invented the gunpowder and the magnetic
compass. They had a very large navy with over 2,000 vessels in all sizes and they conducted overseas
expeditions. After the last Chinese expedition, there was an imperial edict that banned the construction
of ships with more than two masts. Warships were put away and not maintained. The navy was too
costly and the Chinese wanted to spend their money defending their Northern frontiers from the
Mongols. This did not require a large navy. Paul Kennedy stated that in this Restoration atmosphere,
the all important officialdom was concerned to preserve and recapture the past, not to create a brighter

The Hawthorne Effect
Hawthorne Effect
The Hawthorne effect was discovered as an outcome of analyzing older experiments that were
conducted at the Hawthorne Works, a factory outside Chicago between 1924 and 1932. The term
Hawthorne Effect was first suggested by Henry A. Landsberger in 1955. According to Landsberger,
the Hawthorne effect is a type of reactivity. It refers to any short term increase in productivity that
may occur in an organization as a result of being watched or appreciated.
In organizations, it has been observed that small changes like increasing lighting, clearing obstacles
from the floor, maintaining clean work stations or even increased attention to the workforce has a
short term impact on productivity.

These counsellors then took the feedback to supervisors and helped them modify their behavior. This
exercise resulted in better intra organizational communication.
Definitions for the Hawthorne Effect
Hawthorne effect in research refers to the scenario where a non manipulated variable causes and
unexpected impact on the variable that was originally to be manipulated. The Hawthorne effect may
also refer to experimental subjects complying increasingly well with what they perceive as the wishes
of the experimenter.
In an experiment, a Hawthorne effect would refer to an effect that happens in a desired direction but
not because of the expected reason. The positive effect happens not because of a variable being
modified or introduced but rather the effect takes place because the participants know they are being
watched. Experimenters need to consider how the consequences of performance affect how a subject
behaves. The reactions of a participant to an experiment can itself cause some changes. The
conclusion therefore is that any novel change in environment or attention on subjects will be well
received by

Csr Reporting Implications For Barclays Banks...
6F6Z3007: Assignment 2: CSR reporting Implications for Barclays Banks Environmental
Sustainability
Introduction
Corporate social responsibility (CSR), broadly defined as the notion that companies should
accompany the pursuit of profit with good citizenship within a wider society, has become an
increasingly prominent feature of business life over the last 10 to 15 years (Sadler and Lloyd,
2009:613). This quote from Sadler and Lloyd is a useful starting point in demonstrating the rapid rise
and development of corporate responsibility. Global issues, in an economic sense with the global
financial crisis in 2008 and in an environmental sense with the threat of climate change have aided in
bringing to the fore a need for businesses and the corporate world to manage themselves and the
services they offer in a more responsible and sustainable way. In particular reference to the financial
sector this has attempted to be achieved through global financial sustainability agreements such as the
Equator Principles. By entering into global agreements careful monitoring and reporting of a banks
activities is required to create transparency in assessing their contributions towards corporate social
responsibility and the achievement of sustainable practices in the financial sector. One of the banks
currently signed up to the Equator principles is Barclays, as one of the largest global banks in the
world with a 300 year history it is a company that serves 48 million customers worldwide

Case Study Personalize Your Management Development
As I am reading the case, Personalize Your Management Development, I really touched by the author

different characteristics made the different working styles as manager. As a company, you will have a

The author told one of them that they are really talented but they are not fooling anyone. After that the
author tried some other ways to change those people and the more they proved themselves able to
learn from others, the more successful they would be. At the end the author found out that most of
those managers are using a self deprecating honesty to replace the phony self confidence.
Thirdly, the author introduced a kind of people who are unknown leader. Those people have the right
blend of confidence and leadership skills, but they fail to develop relationships outside of a small
circle of colleagues. In my opinion, those people are something like the reluctant one. Because they all
have the ability to lead the team but they lack a necessary confidence of leading. What is more, this
kind of unknown leader are seldom make network to other staffs in the company. So the author firstly
tried to let them aware that they will not get promoted if they didn t begin to network. Namely, asking
them to start talking and networking with others so that they could market for themselves. Therefore,
the author tried to train them from the first beginning, which is make them become more comfortable
meeting and talking with new people. After a period of exercise, those managers aware that they are
natural ability to think analytically and drive to a deeper level in conversations impressed others.

Persuasive Essay On Crosswalks
Summary
Since moving into the neighborhood about seven months ago, there are a lot of activities for the
residents to partake in. The neighborhood has eleven playgrounds, (some which are for younger
children considered tot lots), four basketball courts, a pool, a recreational center, and mailboxes at the
end of each resident s street. Seems like a lot of places you are able to walk, right? One thing missing
in the neighborhood is crosswalks leading to each of these different places and more. What I am
proposing is to have cross walks put up throughout the neighborhood so residents are safe when
crossing the road.
Problem
A large circle is the main road for the neighborhood and has eight connecting streets leading to where
the resident s houses are located. Families each day walk around the neighborhood to different
activities such as the playgrounds, basketball courts, the pool, and other activities. The problem is
when residents have to walk to different places there are no safe places to cross the road. Currently
there are no painted crosswalks or even pedestrian crossing signs. This can cause a major safety
concern for residents and drivers. Children and teens can be affect largely by this due to the school bus
dropping them off at the entrance of the neighborhood. Also, as this being unsafe for residents this is
also an unsafe condition for others such as, the families of residents, maintenance workers, delivery
drivers, etc. However,

Game 3 Game Analysis
The basic way that I used to make profit is Trade on spread. I would take a long or short position
based on the dynamic difference between the spot price and future price. Normally, I am willing to
trade on the size of 20 contracts to ensure that I have sufficient margin to use when I firstly make a
loss on these contracts. Some other matters will be explained in the following games that I have
played in my personal game order.
In Game 2, what I need to do is try to avoid trade losses and achieve net profits at the end of the game.
At the beginning, the spot price and future price were a bit sticky to each other, the future price
fluctuated within 10 cents for quite a long time, so I chose to sell(buy) it at the higher(lower) price and
then to buy(sell) it at the relative lower (higher)price to make a small profit. In session 2, I made a loss
based on my wrong expectation so I should take a bit more risk to recover my losses in later sessions.
For example, If I short many contracts but the market is going up and the basis is widening, then I
need to buy the contracts to close my position as soon as possible, at the same time, I will long more
contracts and sell them when the market go further high to cover my losses and make profits.

profit, which means I should focus on a long term position and increase my trade size as well. In facts,

future price, I will sell the contracts right away. However, it is not serious if I make a loss just because

Furthermore, if you are living abroad, try to find nation based communities. This is very helpful
because if the language is a problem for you, there will people who speak your native language in the
community. Remember people from the community probably passed through the same process you are
passing right now. They would have had the same questions you have right now, so don t hesitate to
ask for help. You will see, they will be willing to help. Moreover, you can join a religious community
such as churches, mosques, and synagogues. These faith based communities have occasional
gatherings where you can meet with other community members and become a part of something
important for you. Other communities that are based on specific activities as biking, hiking or dancing
are also great opportunities for abroad living people to surround themselves with people who share
same interests with them and spend good time together.
Secondly, exploring your new place is another way to lessen homesickness. When you first move, you
might feel like the outsider which causes homesickness to increase; therefore, stop being a tourist and

Chinese Immigrants In The Chinese Must Go
In The Chinese Must Go the cartoonist depicts the Chinese as running with a money bag to China
which symbolizes the American belief that Chinese laundrymen were exploiting the American
economy. The Chinese man is running from San Francisco to China with a bag of money in his hand,
which was likely earned from working in the laundry business, this can be inferred from the cleaning
tool in his arm and the stereotype of Chinese immigrants being laundrymen. This depiction makes
sense given the historical period, because the Chinese primarily labored in lower paying industries and

What s Eating Gilbert Grape Family
Every family faces problems, whether those problems are displayed publicly or kept hidden, they are

individual in the family and the family as a whole. The communities reaction to a family s problem is
also highly dire to how the problem is solved or resolved. We see all these aspects of a problem with

problems as a group and the group element of the problem, some would say made it more difficult.

Film Analysis Of Lars Von Trier s Dogville
Jacob Grady
Professor Burrell
English 242
October 12th, 2017
Analysis of Lars von Trier s Dogville Lars Von Trier s film Dogville is an interesting European spin on
how America is viewed. Produced in 2003, performed by an almost all American cast, written by a
Danish director, Dogville becomes not only a film about how Europeans might see America; but how
the audience can interpret what Trier is presenting to them. Dogville, is often viewed and critiqued by
many as a cynical spin on how the United States is perceived. After all, this film is one of the easiest
ways to see how a director can use the many Brechtian techniques to keep the audience from being
absorbed in the film.
Trier places his actors within what the audience can observe to be a small town. He carefully lays out
a map of buildings and other areas on the floor of a huge, undecorated studio. The audience when
introduced to Dogville are able to see a bird s eye view of what the town looks like. The furniture and
props are real, but there are no walls to obscure activities within each defined area; only solid chalk
lines separating what is a house, or a garden, or a town hall. Consequently, the audience can see
anything and everything that is happening all over the town; they may see a character tending to their
garden in the background while the camera is focused on other characters.
For most viewers, myself included for the first time through, Dogville is an oddly presented film that

The Life Of Emily Dickinson Essay
The Life of Emily Dickinson
Although she lived a seemingly secluded life, Emily Dickinson s many encounters with death
influenced many of her poems and letters. Perhaps one of the most ground breaking and inventive
poets in American history, Dickinson has become as well known for her bizarre and eccentric life as
for her incredible poems and letters. Numbering over 1,700, her poems highlight the many moments
in a 19th century New Englander woman s life, including the deaths of some of her most beloved
friends and family, most of which occurred in a short period of time (Benfey 6 25).
Several biographers of Dickinson point out her methods of exploring several topics in ... Show more

Explored thoroughly in her works, death seems to be a dominating theme through out Dickinson s life.
Dickinson, although secluded and isolated had a few encounters with love, two perhaps serious affairs
were documented in her letters and poems. But, since Emily s life was so self kept and private the
exact identity of these people remains unsure. What is known, is during the
Civil War , worried for her friends and families lives, death increased in frequency to be a dominant
theme in her writings. After 1878, the year of her influential father s death, (a treasurer of Amherst
college, and a member of the
Congress), this theme increased with each passing of friend or family, peeking perhaps with the death
of the two men she loved (Waugh 100).
But, as documented by several critics, Dickinson viewed death, as she did most ideas, in
circumference. She was careful to high light and explore all the paradoxes and emotional extremes

Good morning everyone! Signing on, India Hornsby with ASAP Health. I will be reporting live inside
Mrs. Frizzle. She has been under the weather for about two days now. A bacterium is invading the
lower lobe of her right lung. It s my job to pilot the invasion and do a live report on what I see. I will
enter from the right femoral vein and follow a path to the lower lobe of the right lung via the right
pulmonary artery. I will be describing the structures that I pass by and through. Once I have reached
the lung, I will describe the structures that I see and discuss how the body fights against ... Show more

It begins at the base of the heart s right ventricle and is approximately 3 cm in diameter and 5 cm in
length (Yahoo Health, 2012). It then splits into the left and right pulmonary arteries. The right
pulmonary artery delivers oxygen depleted blood to the right lung. From the right pulmonary artery I
have made it to the right lung. Once in the lung I will travel South West to reach the lower lobe of the
right lung.
I m finally in the lung. I can finally see what it looks like. I see a structure that looks like a three
without leaves. I am passing the right primary bronchi. It is a tube like structure that allow for the
passage of air between the trachea and lung (Health Type, 2012). As I move along the right primary
bronchi branches off into the right secondary bronchi. Each one of the bronchi serves as an airway to a
specific lobe of the lung (Wikipedia, 2011). The bronchi have cartilage plates, smooth muscles, and
mucus secreting gland cells in its wall (Wikipedia, 2011). They contain cilia, which removes dust and
debris. Wow! The right secondary bronchi are branching off into very small passageways called
bronchioles. The bronchioles are responsible for controlling air distribution and airflow resistance in
the lungs (Wise Geek, 2012). They also contain cilia that help move air through the system. The
bronchioles are now terminating at the alveolar ducts. They are the tiny end ducts that fill the lungs. At

The Golden Ass
Apuleius wrote the Golden Ass during the Second Century A.D. In it he talked about many complex
allegorical contexts and layers of meaning pertaining to varying religious practices. He was able to do
this by essentially switching back and forth between side stories which might or might not intertwine
with the overall story. The religion of Isis was predominant in comparing the other lesser known or
rather inferior religions of the time such as Christianity. It seems as if Isis was praised in a way that
would grant her saint like qualities. Many things were considered important surrounding this including
dreams and the recounting of them to priests, as well as snakes associated with Aesculapius and the
healing procedures associated with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There also is a misogynistic view of women throughout the book and their almost inescapable
correlation with magic and practices used essentially for evil. The story of Thelyphron discusses this
correlation, with women being the center of the story as well as the themes of magic and the occult.
Traditional religion of the day gave high regard and respect for the dead, more than the living in most
cases, and as such stringent funeral rites and burial procedures were hence followed to ensure proper
passage of the soul or reincarnation depending on what path you specifically may take. Hence in this
story, when it comes to mutilating the body of Thelyphron, instead of treating it as an unthinkable
crime, it only elicits laughter from the crowd. This act shows a shift in the story where ridicule and
public humiliation play an essential role in demeaning the rights of citizens and legal condemnation is
put into a clearer context. Public condemnation was also shown in the story of Aristomenes when he
was scared in being falsely accused of Socrates murder, driving him into hiding. This theme also
carries onto the trial of Lucius, which apparently turns out to be nothing more than an elaborate, and
decidedly cruel, practical joke. The repeated fear of condemnation and subsequent absolution are
evident throughout the story because this umbrella of fear kept control on peoples actions, and maybe
in a way were also the fears and insecurities

Gas Chromatography
Further investigate and determine its identity. By utilizing chromatography, a forensic analyst can
identify each material and/or chemical that were meshed together to form the sample under
investigation. The identification can be determined once the sample is placed in a liquid or when
absorbed on a solid surface, and the separation of the molecules becomes either mobile or stationary.
This basic analytical technique is beneficial with classifying drugs that has been collected from a
crime scene and transported to a crime laboratory for analyses. There are four main variations of
chromatography, however, Gas Chromatography is the most widely used technique (Woodford, 2017).

In most cases, a deceased victim experienced a violent attack that may have resulted in open wounds
and exposed flesh. Once a person blood supply stops and their respiratory system shuts down,
decomposition begins immediately (What Are The Four Stages of Human Decomposition, 2017). As a
result, bodily fluids and gasses are released from the body into the air and emanates a distinctive smell
which attract insects. When insects are present at the scene of the crime, investigators rely on forensic
entomologists to observe various type of insects for the estimate time of death. The type of insects that
are located on the dead body and the surrounding area depends on the geographical location such as
urban and rural areas, and environmental temperatures. One of the most common type of insects that a
forensic entomologist will notice is a blowfly. A blowfly can withstand any type of environmental
temperatures in all geographical areas. Blowflies are attracted to fresh dead corpses and can indicate
that the victim s death just occurred. However, the presence of maggots feeding on the flesh of the
body can inform entomologist that the blowfly laid eggs and the body has been there for some time.
Maggots are important because they must complete a life cycle to transform into blowfly. The blow
fly life cycle has six parts, and each cycle various in time of completion. To figure out what time the
death occurred, entomologists would examine a maggot that is more developed than the others. On the
other hand, if there are empty pupal cases collected from the body, entomologists can determine that a
fly has completed an entire life cycle and the body was there for one hundred and forty three hours
(Life Cycle of the Blowfly, 2014) or 6 days. The presence of beetles is a

Pharmacologic Smoking Cessation Methods
For this week, I chose to do my discussion on the presentation presented by Selenia Lopez. The title of
her presentation was Pharmacologic and Non
Pharmacologic Smoking Cessation Methods . The main
objective of her research was to review both pharmacologic and non pharmacologic smoking cessation
methods, the success rate, mechanism of action and the cost and understand the hazard of smoking
and the benefits of quitting. She has also discussed the difficulties faced by an individual when they
stop smoking and what makes it so hard to stop. Smoking a cigarette can lead to many health hazards
and could cause smoking related diseases such as COPD. It is hard to quit smoking as some people
may have nicotine withdrawal symptoms but the end result ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Both of these methods could be used individually or combined depending on the outcomes. The
pharmacologic treatments for tobacco dependence include nicotine replacement therapy, Bupropion
(Zyban), and Varenicline (Chantix), all are FDA approved. Some of the treatments are available over
the counter while some require doctor s prescription. Nicotine patch (Nicoderm CQ), nicotine gum
(Nicorette), and lozenge are available over the counter whereas nicotine inhaler (Nicotrol), nicotine
nasal spray (Nicotrol NS), Bupropion (Zyban), and Varenicline (Chantix) require doctor s prescription.
The non pharmacologic method includes patient education, behavioral therapy, self help materials, and
telephone counseling. There are also several health organizations and resources available for those
who are willing to quit smoking completely such as American Cancer Society, American Lung
Association, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health and much more. Upon reading the
success rate and the cost described for both the therapies, I believe non pharmacologic therapy is the
most cost effective therapy. The physicians providing non pharmacologic therapy should provide
support within the clinic by encouraging the patients in the cessation attempt and talk to them about
the cessation process, the success they have achieved, and the difficulties encountered while

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Post Traumatic Stress...
Cognitive behavioural therapy is a combination of behavioural strategies and cognitive therapy
(Zayfert, 2006). Aaron T. Beck was the founder of cognitive behavioural therapy in 1963, initially his
work focused on depression. The basic principles of cognitive behavioural therapy are people s
thoughts, emotions and behaviours and all work together in a unified system (Curwen.B, 2000). B.
Curwen states: That thoughts can lead to emotions and behaviour; and that emotional disorders arise
from negatively biased thinking (which lead to unhelpful emotions and behaviours); and that
emotional disorders can be helped by changing such thinking (Curwen.B, 2000). Amy s problems

Amy s relationship with Claire is suffering as Amy feels that Claire is fed up with her behaviour (line
96). Amy is suffering re current dreams which are also linked with her post traumatic stress disorder,
the dreams are causing Amy to scream and cry (line 97). Claire does tell Amy that she loves her but
Amy does not consciously believe the counter evidence and dismisses it which feeds her core belief.
Amy s negative automatic thoughts cause Amy to fear danger, this is shown on lines 84 93, her
negative automatic thoughts cause Amy to become hyper vigilant. When out and about she constantly
looks out for danger, which is causing Amy to become anxious. Amy is avoiding driving as she feels
that it s not safe for her to drive, Amy has no counter evidence to support this thought. The accident
has changed Amy s original core beliefs, that the world is safe, she s loved and she has control. Her
negative thoughts, emotions and behaviours are maintaining the problem, causing a vicious circle. The
steps of cognitive behavioural therapy that Amy needs to change her core beliefs and negative
behaviour are taught in two main steps. The first stage of therapy is verbal technique, which will
attempt to teach Amy to cast doubt on her core beliefs, this is done by talking to the therapist about her
thoughts and feeling at that present time, this will help Amy make a connection herself about her
feelings and thoughts. The

Human And Environmental Interactions Of The Salem Creek...
Human and Environmental Interactions Each watershed varies depending on location. The Salem
Creek watershed naturally consists of rocks, vegetation, water, clay and loam soils, slopes, and
juvenile aquatic life. Conversely, there is naturally some stream bank and soil erosion. As for human
features, the watershed consists of drainage pipes, sewage pipes, bridges, mounds of cement, and
pollution sources. Most of the human features are generally in the highly urbanized areas of the
watershed, which consists of northwestern portion of Winston Salem, NC. There were also impervious
surfaces bordering both sides of the watershed. On the stretch parallel to Old Salem Road, there was
Old Salem Road on one side of the watershed, and housing and other buildings on the other. With the
portion that is appears near South Main Street, there is a multiuse development and major road
bordering it. There is also cement on the furthest side of the watershed and a sidewalk on the other that
border the wide portion of the watershed that is located in the Salem Creek Greenway.
Many of these impervious surfaces have drainage systems that run directly into the watershed. As
shown above in the center picture, there is direct drainage from the street to the watershed with no
type of filtration, which in return has cause the glistening polluted puddle in front of the drainage pipe.

Agatha Christie Quotes
Essay #1: In Murder on the Orient express Agatha Christie uses clues to reveal who had committed the
crime in the novel. For example, when Poirot Here s the scream in the middle inside of Ratchett s
room in the middle and when he investigates Poirot hears: Ce n est rien. Je me suis trompe Which
Means it s nothing in French Indicating that the murderer knows French which can rule out some of
the victims. Later evidence suggests Ratchett was killed at 1:15 am due to His watch being broken at
that time. Another Clue in the story was that when Poirot examined Ratchett s wounds he noticed that
he was stabbed many times by what seemed to be one person who was left handed and one who was
right which also means that there was two murderers (Christie). Later in the story, the reader learns of
the Scarlett Kimono that was worn by the murderer the night of the killing which was a key piece of
the mystery since it was found to be worn by the murderer. Since this was way back before the era of
technology like today, they would be able to go to a lab for a finger print or DNA analysis. However,

The Tao, Te Tao
Through religion adherents are enabled to fulfill our need to search for and find meaning within our
own lives. Many religions help to provide its followers with this fulfillment through the principal
beliefs, which are held as sacred. Followers of Daoism follow traditions based on philosophy and
connectedness to nature and the world around us. Through this Daoists are enabled to forge a strong
bond with the world around them, using it to empower them, this then allows for the followers to feel
fulfillment in their lives as they strive to attain inner peace and immortality.
Daoism revolves around our interaction with Tao and the flow of Chi. The Tao (otherwise known as
the way) can be described as the order of the universe affecting everything throughout life. Humans
cannot understand the Tao and its working throughout the universe. The Tao manifests itself within
our world in many different forms, it is found within nature, the world and the universe. The Tao Te
Ching written by Laozi describes the Tao as The Tao that can be spoken of is not the constant Tao; The
name that can be named Is not the constant Name. (Tao Te Ching Chapter 1) Another description of
the Tao comes from the sage Chuang Tzu who defines the Tao as The way is to man as rivers and
lakes are to fish, the natural condition of life. (www.bbc.co.uk.) From this we can see how the Tao is a
concept that cannot be understood, it is a part of the supernatural world transcending anything that we

The Franchising Scheme Of Mcdonalds
1) Back in the 1960s and 1970s, company and corporations tried to branch out using the franchising
scheme, since it s the safest way for both the franchisor and franchisee. Compared to others,
McDonald was way ahead of their competition again when it comes to franchising. Unlike other fast
food chains, McDonalds executives were interested in expanding their franchises by offering lower
franchising fee instead of demanding a large fee up front, sold off the rights to entire territories, and
earned money by selling supplies directly to their franchises. Together with their well known brand
recognition, McDonalds continues to expand more and more, just like what Ray Kroc wanted from the
beginning. This kind of explained why there are so many McDonalds restaurants compared to others,
such as Carl s Jr and Burgers King. While this might seems like a good business decision for the
company, it s a 2 way knife for franchisee. Instead of demanding large royalties or selling supplies,
McDonald became the landlord for most of their franchises. These franchisee have to pay up to 40%
markup and that one single contract breach could lead to franchisee s eviction. Over the years, this
eventually turned into a good business for company and as one of McDonalds executive put it We are
in the real estate business and the only reasons that we were able to sell fifteen cent hamburgers is
because it is the only way that help our tenants to us our rent. In other words, to open up a franchise

Lab Report On Solar System

Astronomy 1000 Section A
August 29, 2017
Lab Report 1 The Solar System During our first lab in Astronomy, we got to develop and perform a
hands on experiment of the overall scale of our Solar System. We got to physically interact by
demonstrating and constructing a model of our Solar System by using a simple tool such as toilet
paper. Who knew? We used the toilet paper shown in the pictures as a visual representation to
illustrate the overall scale of the Solar System, to show the distance between each individual planet,
and to represent the distances of each planet from the Sun. We physically counted out each piece or
sheet of toilet paper to reach the destination of which the next or neighboring planet was from its
neighboring planet. We started with the Sun, then Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn,
Uranus, until we finally reached our final planet, Neptune. We drew dots to represent each planet. In
our lab activity, we created and demonstrated a relative scale model to show how the planets are
aligned and the distance between each of them. We created this model, so that we could better
understand the overall sizes of each planet and the distances of each of the planets from the Sun. First,
we used the model distance formula, which is model distance=0.25 inches/1,391,900 km * actual
distance in km. We used this formula to calculate the distance in which each planet lies from the Sun.
We found the overall scale distance of each planet

Teaching Strategies For Student Involvement Essay
The students in this class are fifteen to seventeen year olds with one eighteen year old. I applied my
Content and Pedagogy PGE to this lesson using teaching strategies I acquired at the Argument Writing
Workshop. For example, I began with an icebreaker called This or That, reading aloud a series of
controversial statements. Students who agreed with a statement moved to one side of the room; those
who disagreed moved to the other side. Then students took turns explaining their choices. I also
incorporated close reading strategies covered at the workshop. I applied my Assessment PGE, using
Lexile scores to select texts and initially group students. One goal for the featured lesson was for
students to learn the language of argument writing (claim, counterclaim, ethos, logos, pathos, etc.). I
also wanted students to deduce an author s position in a text, cite supporting evidence, and analyze
text to identify rhetorical devices. I assessed the featured lesson by observing student involvement in
the discussions and reading the notes students took over the course of the unit. The final assessment
was for each student to write an argument essay on illegal immigration. The broader context for this
lesson was for students to think critically, work collaboratively, and use effective communication
skills. I also wanted students to consider real world problems and gain respect for differing viewpoints
often based on cultural background and experience. Argument writing is the most used

The Goodyear And The Tire Industry
The Goodyear name has been one of the most recognized brands in the tire industry around the world.
They are known for having a superior quality product through the price and positions they have
chosen. Their slogan, The best tires in the world have Goodyear written all over them, (Kerin, 2005)
provides their customers with a high class message and creates an importance for them to preserve the
accessibility of their high value brands. Unfortunately, consumers have become more price conscious
about their tire purchases and less focused on loyalty to a specific brand. They experienced a 3.2%
decline in the market share for the tires associated with passenger car replacement (Kerin, 2005).
Because of this change, Goodyear has seen a drop in their sales. With already 2 million Goodyear
brand tires, which have been worn out, being replaced at 850 Sears Auto Center locations annually,
Goodyear reopened previous discussions with Sears to possibly sell their Eagle brand tires or all
Goodyear tire brands through them. Choosing to do so could create great benefits for the company but
could also generate turmoil within their franchises and other retail chains where their brands are sold.
Before making the final decision, they must determine how this move will affect their franchisees, are
they willing to significantly change their distribution policy, what brands Goodyear will allow to be
retailed through the Sears network, and how cannibalization of their brands sold via other

Figure 4 shows annual trends in mortality rates for hemodialysis patients, with adjustments for age,
gender, and race. Although mortality rates in the first year of dialysis therapy have clearly declined
from their peak value of 294.4 per 1000 patient years in 1987, meaningful improvements do not seem
to have accrued since 1993. In contrast, mortality rates in the second, third, fourth, and fifth years after
inception of dialysis therapy have declined progressively in successive years. These trends are
encouraging, all the more so when one considers that the expanding burden of comorbid illness in
latter day dialysis patients is not considered in the year to year comparison of mortality rates. The
failure of first year mortality rates to decline in the past decade is without a clear explanation and is a
research area that may be deserving of an enhanced priority. Similarly, it is unknown why mortality
rates have continued to decline in the face of expanding burdens of comorbidity, given that no specific
therapeutic strategies in this population have been proved to reduce mortality in large, multicenter,

A Successful Obama Inaugural Address

Inaugural Address On January 21st, 2013, Barack Obama addressed the audience as the re elected
President of America in an inaugural ceremony on the West Front of Capitol. The speech was written
by Jonathan Favreau. In an inaugural address, Obama touched upon several important issues;
immigration, gender equality, and economic reforms and left behind the message that unity is our
nation s ultimate strength. He was able convinced the audience that they should all work together to
overcome all issues and for a better tomorrow for the next generation. Obama successfully persuaded
the audience by exemplifying that he was aware of their issues, problems, and future needs. Greek

Wilfred Owen Research Paper
Born on the 18th of March, 1893 in Oswestry, England to parents of Welsh descent, Wilfred Edward
Salter Owen was the eldest of four children. At the age of four, his family moved from his grandfather
s home to a place in Birkenhead, where Owen attended school for the next 7 years ( Wilfred Owen ).
His family then moved again, this time to Shrewsbury where he finished up his schooling before
trying for university. However, when he failed to win a scholarship he was forced to take a job as a lay
assistant to the Vicar of Dunsden ( Wilfred (Edward Salter) Owen ). At this job, Wilfred Owen became
more aware of the economic and social issues. When it became clear to him that the Church of
England was not doing enough to help solve these issues, Owen began writing poetry. His initial
forays into were frequently about conventional subjects ( Wilfred Owen ). Owen s disillusionment
lead him to once again try for a scholarship to university in 1913. When this again failed to

  • 2. Book Banning Book Everyone who has ever read a book has read a book by a banned author. Book banning has been around for hundreds of years. People should be allowed to read whatever they choose. The ability to read, speak, think, and express ourselves freely is a right, not a privilege (Celebrate). Standing up for what people believe in is something they re taught to do at a bright, young age; making sure people are capable of reading the literature they want is one of the biggest controversies. No one should have the restriction of book banning forcing itself on their reading choices. There are many things that go along with book banning, the history of how banning has come to be, reasons why books are banned, how parents have become involved, and the importance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many parents monitor what their child is reading. When something is brought home that they don t agree with, this is when the anger comes out. Every parent believes the library s policies should be set by the people (Berry). Parents believe when a book is threatening towards their child it should immediately be removed from all shelves and forbid from being read by any other students. This situation happens quite often, but in realization no child should be told what they are allowed or not allowed to read by another student s parent. Some parents have even began to call them challenged books because they believe the term is too harsh, and sounds too much like censorship. Once again the term fear manifests itself; parents are extremely afraid of what their child can find in between the pages of a book. Many of the times the parent will not read the book, but rather read the premise and decide from there. Parents do not realize that the book they are reading could be the most important books that child or teen could ever read. Words and ideas... will help them fight their monsters (Finan). Argumentative Essay Argumentative Essay The function of an argumentative essay is to show that your assertion (opinion, theory, and hypothesis) about some phenomenon or phenomena is correct or more truthful than others . The art of argumentation is not an easy skill to acquire. Many people might think that if one simply has an opinion, one can argue it successfully, and these folks are always surprised when others don t agree with them because their logic seems so correct. There are literally dozens of fallacious arguments you can commit; a fallacious argument style is one that commits one or more fallacies frequently. For example, if a person in an argument persistently says, the economy went up this year, therefore the party in power caused the economy to improve, that person is engaging in the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy, an invalid argument of the form x happened, y happened, therefore x caused y. Csr Reporting Implications For Barclays Banks... 6F6Z3007: Assignment 2: CSR reporting Implications for Barclays Banks Environmental Sustainability Introduction Corporate social responsibility (CSR), broadly defined as the notion that companies should accompany the pursuit of profit with good citizenship within a wider society, has become an increasingly prominent feature of business life over the last 10 to 15 years (Sadler and Lloyd, 2009:613). This quote from Sadler and Lloyd is a useful starting point in demonstrating the rapid rise and development of corporate responsibility. Global issues, in an economic sense with the global financial crisis in 2008 and in an environmental sense with the threat of climate change have aided in bringing to the fore a need for businesses and the corporate world to manage themselves and the services they offer in a more responsible and sustainable way. In particular reference to the financial sector this has attempted to be achieved through global financial sustainability agreements such as the Equator Principles. By entering into global agreements careful monitoring and reporting of a banks activities is required to create transparency in assessing their contributions towards corporate social responsibility and the achievement of sustainable practices in the financial sector. Those people have the right blend of confidence and leadership skills, but they fail to develop relationships outside of a small circle of colleagues. The neighborhood has eleven playgrounds, (some which are for younger children considered tot lots), four basketball courts, a pool, a recreational center, and mailboxes at the end of each resident s street. Seems like a lot of places you are able to walk, right? One thing missing in the neighborhood is crosswalks leading to each of these different places and more. What I am proposing is to have cross walks put up throughout the neighborhood so residents are safe when crossing the road. Problem A large circle is the main road for the neighborhood and has eight connecting streets leading to where the resident s houses are located. Families each day walk around the neighborhood to different activities such as the playgrounds, basketball courts, the pool, and other activities. The problem is when residents have to walk to different places there are no safe places to cross the road. Currently there are no painted crosswalks or even pedestrian crossing signs. This can cause a major safety concern for residents and drivers. Children and teens can be affect largely by this due to the school bus dropping them off at the entrance of the neighborhood. Also, as this being unsafe for residents this is also an unsafe condition for others such as, the families of residents, maintenance workers, delivery drivers, etc. However, ... I would take a long or short position based on the dynamic difference between the spot price and future price. Normally, I am willing to trade on the size of 20 contracts to ensure that I have sufficient margin to use when I firstly make a loss on these contracts. Some other matters will be explained in the following games that I have played in my personal game order. In Game 2, what I need to do is try to avoid trade losses and achieve net profits at the end of the game. At the beginning, the spot price and future price were a bit sticky to each other, the future price fluctuated within 10 cents for quite a long time, so I chose to sell(buy) it at the higher(lower) price and then to buy(sell) it at the relative lower (higher)price to make a small profit. In session 2, I made a loss based on my wrong expectation so I should take a bit more risk to recover my losses in later sessions. For example, If I short many contracts but the market is going up and the basis is widening, then I need to buy the contracts to close my position as soon as possible, at the same time, I will long more contracts and sell them when the market go further high to cover my losses and make profits. Film Analysis Of Lars Von Trier s Dogville Jacob Grady Professor Burrell English 242 October 12th, 2017 Analysis of Lars von Trier s Dogville Lars Von Trier s film Dogville is an interesting European spin on how America is viewed. Produced in 2003, performed by an almost all American cast, written by a Danish director, Dogville becomes not only a film about how Europeans might see America; but how the audience can interpret what Trier is presenting to them. Dogville, is often viewed and critiqued by many as a cynical spin on how the United States is perceived. After all, this film is one of the easiest ways to see how a director can use the many Brechtian techniques to keep the audience from being absorbed in the film. Trier places his actors within what the audience can observe to be a small town. He carefully lays out a map of buildings and other areas on the floor of a huge, undecorated studio. The audience when introduced to Dogville are able to see a bird s eye view of what the town looks like. The furniture and props are real, but there are no walls to obscure activities within each defined area; only solid chalk lines separating what is a house, or a garden, or a town hall. Consequently, the audience can see anything and everything that is happening all over the town; they may see a character tending to their garden in the background while the camera is focused on other characters. The Life Of Emily Dickinson Essay The Life of Emily Dickinson Although she lived a seemingly secluded life, Emily Dickinson s many encounters with death influenced many of her poems and letters. Perhaps one of the most ground breaking and inventive poets in American history, Dickinson has become as well known for her bizarre and eccentric life as for her incredible poems and letters. Numbering over 1,700, her poems highlight the many moments in a 19th century New Englander woman s life, including the deaths of some of her most beloved friends and family, most of which occurred in a short period of time (Benfey 6 25). Explored thoroughly in her works, death seems to be a dominating theme through out Dickinson s life. Dickinson, although secluded and isolated had a few encounters with love, two perhaps serious affairs were documented in her letters and poems. But, since Emily s life was so self kept and private the exact identity of these people remains unsure. What is known, is during the Civil War , worried for her friends and families lives, death increased in frequency to be a dominant theme in her writings. After 1878, the year of her influential father s death, (a treasurer of Amherst college, and a member of the Congress), this theme increased with each passing of friend or family, peeking perhaps with the death of the two men she loved (Waugh 100). But, as documented by several critics, Dickinson viewed death, as she did most ideas, in circumference. She was careful to high light and explore all the paradoxes and emotional extremes involved with death. One poem expresses her depression after discovering her two loves had passed away. She wrote, I never lost as much as twice, and that was in the sod; Twice I have stood a beggar, Before the door of God, (Porter 170). The story of Thelyphron discusses this correlation, with women being the center of the story as well as the themes of magic and the occult. Traditional religion of the day gave high regard and respect for the dead, more than the living in most cases, and as such stringent funeral rites and burial procedures were hence followed to ensure proper passage of the soul or reincarnation depending on what path you specifically may take. Hence in this story, when it comes to mutilating the body of Thelyphron, instead of treating it as an unthinkable crime, it only elicits laughter from the crowd. This act shows a shift in the story where ridicule and public humiliation play an essential role in demeaning the rights of citizens and legal condemnation is put into a clearer context. Public condemnation was also shown in the story of Aristomenes when he was scared in being falsely accused of Socrates murder, driving him into hiding. This theme also carries onto the trial of Lucius, which apparently turns out to be nothing more than an elaborate, and decidedly cruel, practical joke. In most cases, a deceased victim experienced a violent attack that may have resulted in open wounds and exposed flesh. Once a person blood supply stops and their respiratory system shuts down, decomposition begins immediately (What Are The Four Stages of Human Decomposition, 2017). As a result, bodily fluids and gasses are released from the body into the air and emanates a distinctive smell which attract insects. When insects are present at the scene of the crime, investigators rely on forensic entomologists to observe various type of insects for the estimate time of death. The type of insects that are located on the dead body and the surrounding area depends on the geographical location such as urban and rural areas, and environmental temperatures. One of the most common type of insects that a forensic entomologist will notice is a blowfly. A blowfly can withstand any type of environmental temperatures in all geographical areas. Blowflies are attracted to fresh dead corpses and can indicate that the victim s death just occurred. However, the presence of maggots feeding on the flesh of the body can inform entomologist that the blowfly laid eggs and the body has been there for some time. Maggots are important because they must complete a life cycle to transform into blowfly. The blow fly life cycle has six parts, and each cycle various in time of completion. To figure out what time the death occurred, entomologists would examine a maggot that is more developed than the others. On the other hand, if there are empty pupal cases collected from the body, entomologists can determine that a fly has completed an entire life cycle and the body was there for one hundred and forty three hours (Life Cycle of the Blowfly, 2014) or 6 days. The Franchising Scheme Of Mcdonalds 1) Back in the 1960s and 1970s, company and corporations tried to branch out using the franchising scheme, since it s the safest way for both the franchisor and franchisee. Compared to others, McDonald was way ahead of their competition again when it comes to franchising. Unlike other fast food chains, McDonalds executives were interested in expanding their franchises by offering lower franchising fee instead of demanding a large fee up front, sold off the rights to entire territories, and earned money by selling supplies directly to their franchises. Together with their well known brand recognition, McDonalds continues to expand more and more, just like what Ray Kroc wanted from the beginning. This kind of explained why there are so many McDonalds restaurants compared to others, such as Carl s Jr and Burgers King. We got to physically interact by demonstrating and constructing a model of our Solar System by using a simple tool such as toilet paper. Who knew? We used the toilet paper shown in the pictures as a visual representation to illustrate the overall scale of the Solar System, to show the distance between each individual planet, and to represent the distances of each planet from the Sun. We physically counted out each piece or sheet of toilet paper to reach the destination of which the next or neighboring planet was from its neighboring planet. We started with the Sun, then Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, until we finally reached our final planet, Neptune. We drew dots to represent each planet. In our lab activity, we created and demonstrated a relative scale model to show how the planets are aligned and the distance between each of them. We created this model, so that we could better understand the overall sizes of each planet and the distances of each of the planets from the Sun. First, we used the model distance formula, which is model distance=0.25 inches/1,391,900 km * actual distance in km.
