MicroStrategy Ethic Case Study
MicroStrategy Scandal Ethics Research Project Graduate Student Management Accounting and
Business Problem Solving Overview In March of 2000, MicroStrategy was the subject of an
investigation alleging the backdating of contracts and accounting fraud. Executives CEO Michael
Saylor, COO Sanju Bansal, and CFO Mark Lynch each paid personal fines of $350,000 and were also
ordered to disgorge the combined amount of $10 million in a settlement with the SEC. (Burns, 2012)
Contracts were backdated, revenues inflated, reports in which the verifier knew of their inaccuracies
were signed and published to the public and as a result stock prices soared and plummeted in the wake
of these transgressions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He was given the option to reapply after the three years. (SEC, 2000) Ethical Issues It is important to
have at least a good understanding of what we are talking about in regards to not only ethics in general
but ethics in business and for accounting specifically, as this case is focused primarily on accounting
practices. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants or AICPA had developed five
divisions of ethical principles that its members were expected to follow. Those principles are
independence, integrity, and objectivity , competence and technical standards , responsibilities to
clients , responsibilities to colleagues , and other responsibilities and practices (Sellers, 1981). And
even after the recent onslaught of scandals, some of the responsibilities of regulation in public
companies have been transferred from them to the government in order to create the Public
Accounting Oversight Board or PCAOB, the AICPA does retain a good deal of authority in this area.
Accountants and their practices have traditionally been held to very high standards. The most recent
publication of the AICPA s Code of Professional Conduct defines a key position as, ...a position in
which an individual...has the ability to exercise influence over the contents of the financial statements,
including when the individual is a member of the board of

Chewing Gum Experiment Hypothesis
The topic that I researched was if chewing gum affected concentration. This was interesting to me
because I ve seen things on the internet that says Chewing gum helps you remember things or chewing
gum helps you concentrate and I wanted to know if it was true. A hypothesis is a prediction statement
that you can test, about the relationship between two variables. The hypothesis for this research is that
I believe that gum does help you concentrate because it helps you stay alert instead of getting
distracted or dozing off. To test this question, there would be two groups of people, one that are
chewing gum and one that are not. First, they are going to receive a sheet of paper with 100 basic
problems on it. Both subjects are going to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Random assignment is when someone assign a participant to experimental and control groups by
chance. This is done to minimize the preexisting differences to the assigned group. To do this, I would
need to give everyone one slip of paper, randomly chosen that says group 1 no gum, group 1 with
gum, group 2 no gum and group 2 with gum. This would make it so that the groups are chosen
randomly. The population would be ten in each group so that would equal forty people in total. These
people would be from the same school, and same grade level to ensure that they are around the same
age. I would ensure that i have a representative sample, a small quantity of something that accurately
reflects the larger population, by testing it on different ages so that it would represent the whole
population instead of just one grade level. Experimenter bias is a process where the person performing
the research influences the results in order to portray a certain outcome. This would not influence my
experiment because everything would be randomized and I wouldn t alter the results because I would
want to know the real answer answer to my research question. To overcome experimenter bias all data

20th Century American Public Schools Essay
Teaching Origins in 20th Century American Public Schools
Introduction
The debate over the origins of the earth and of life has captivated and divided America since the late
19th Century. Evolutionists and creationists have battled in courtrooms , churches , academia , and
public schools over the course of the 20th century and continue fighting, or attempting to make peace
over, this culture war today. The debate has changed between the time of the Scopes Trial and the
present in several important ways. First, creationists have developed many more diverse arguments,
and employ not only biblical and moralistic arguments, but scientific evidence, logical arguments, and
political rhetoric to counter evolutionary theory. Second, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Evolutionary theory has accrued evidence from diverse scientific fields and is now championed as the
centerpiece of biology. Creationism has branched out to include scientific, moralistic, and probabilistic
arguments, and its alliance with fundamentalist Christianity has helped it retain political power.
Toumey asserts that without the churches, academies, colleges, lobbies, rallies, broadcasts, and
mailing lists of the New Religious Right, creationism would be an obscure oddity; with its Religious
Right sponsors, however, it becomes a popular sensation that generates difficult public controversy
about science education.
Evolutionists have largely tried to control curricula at the level of national and state standards, and
view the inclusion of creation models in public schools as a central part of the larger problem of the
poor quality of science education in American schools. Creationists have typically worked on the local
and state level, appealing to first amendment freedoms of religious practice and expression and
attacking the validity of evolutionary theory.
Historical Overview
Since public education in the US has historically been controlled at the local and state level, the
content of and emphasis placed on origins education has varied over time and by locality due to
pressures from creationist and

Taking a Look at Muscular Dystrophy
The first written account of Muscular Dystrophy occurred in 1830, composed by Sir Charles Bell
(Audrey S. Penn, 2001). His essay, along with many other accounts, display instances of younger boys
getting progressively weaker, losing the ability to walk, and dying at extremely early ages. These
diagnostics continued to become more frequent up into the late 1800s and early 1900s. As these
symptoms were being researched and observed it soon became prevalent that this disease can affect all
people of any sex or age. Muscular Dystrophy (or MD) is a general term representing more than 30
inherited diseases and subcategories that affect the skeletal, and in some cases involuntary, muscle
regions (Hegde, 2012). The gene is recessively X linked, meaning that females are carriers of the
mutation even if they do not have the disease, and males will either have it or not. The X linked
characteristic of MD is the reason why most types are seen more abundantly in males. MD can lead to
the symptoms seen in the 1800s; inability to walk or function properly, substantial weakness, and
potentially death. The reason behind differencing types of MD is because no one case is the same;
they are categorized based of the areas of the body that are affected, the ages that symptoms become
present, and the level of intensity of the disease. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is present only in
boys, from birth; however, symptoms do not usually show until the ages of 3 5. Another widely
existing disease is

Character Development In Hamlet And Agamemnon By John F....
A story is generally comprised of five essential elements: characters, setting, plot, conflict and
resolution (Penguin Young Readers Group). The characters are a critical component of any story
because they allow the readers to relate with different types of behaviour, visualize personalities and
engage accordingly. The following stories are centralized around a single character and they all
succeed in capturing audience interest: Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, Agamemnon by Aeschylus,
and Secret Society Speech by John F. Kennedy. The use of character development in each of the
stories is truly effective in gaining audience sympathy and support. The authors introduce the
protagonist with sufficient information and maintain that consistency such that the reader can connect
with each character and their respective traits and emotions. The similarities in character development
are evident as they all target the audience directly using pity. The character of Hamlet showcases his
true feelings through his internal conflict (which is oftentimes open for audience interpretation) that
develops into an external conflict. The character of Clytemnestra uses her daughter s death to justify
her actions and thus, seeks pity from her kingdom as well as the audience. President John F. Kennedy
portrays his confidence, fearlessness and competency by addressing the audience head on about
criticism of his administration and other errors/wrong doings . Despite being uniquely different
characters (two fictional and one non fictional), each protagonist depicts their traits from the
beginning, allowing the audience to relate at a personal level.
The following similarities are apparent examples of effective character development and reader
engagement. Hamlet is introduced in a gloomy mood earlier in Act II as King Claudius asks, How is it
that the clouds still hang on you? (Shakespeare, Hamlet: Act 1, Scene 2, Page 3 ). Shakespeare
strategically utilizes the character of Hamlet to slowly develop the plot such that the readers
understand Hamlet s hatred of Claudius and his mother Gertrude. Similarly, Aeschylus begins with a
watchman announcing the fall of Troy, followed by the chorus stating how King Agamemnon
sacrificed his

Essay about Boyz N Da Hood
This popular film Boyz N the Hood , which was nominated for both best director and original
screenplay takes place in South Central Los Angeles, California. Before the opening seen of the movie
there are two messages that come across the screen about violence in South Central, LA. The one
message states that one out of every twenty one black American males will be murdered in their
lifetime. The other message says that most will die at the hands of another black male. The plot of the
movie is based about a young male named Tre who was sent to live with his father in South Central to
learn discipline and life lessons. Before moving in with his father Tre was following the path of a
criminal lifestyle. Tre then learns from his father ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the movie starts, it talks about two statistics that I found extremely interesting. The first statistic
that was put up on screen said one out of every twenty one black American males will be murdered in
their lifetime. The next statistic said that most will die at the hands of another black man. At the
beginning of the movie it starts off with a little young boy named Tre that lived with his mother. After
starting a fight in school, his mom had enough of his actions and Tre voided his contract with him
mom saying he wouldn t get into any more fights. His mom sent Tre to live with his father in South
Central. Upon arriving at his house he quickly learns the ropes of his father s way of handling things.
Tre was not there for five minutes and his father had him raking up the leaves in the front yard. Later
on that night his father fills him in on the other rules of the house. This showed me that there was a
good discipline in the house. That type of discipline helped Tre out in the long run and changed his
life for the better. The theory that I think really explains this movie is the routine activities theory. This
theory talks about three requirements, the first being a suitable target, the second is absences of
capable guardians, and the final being motivated offenders. Growing up Tre lived in a neighborhood
where suitable targets

Analysis Of No Pda !
Emotions No PDA! I will continue to hear through out my day when I went from class to class at the
midst of passing period during high school and middle school. I never knew what teachers meant by
saying that until they would start to get on my case about showing some affection to the girlfriend I
had at that time. That was when I learned that PDA abbreviates Public Display of Affection and one of
the first times I learned an American display rule. At the same time, I believe some manners may
contribute to the display rules. Then, the topic of it is unmanly for a man to show their emotions. The
other discussion about holding in anger opposed to expressing it. I believe there are limitations to how
men show their emotions, but I do believe that men should be able to show their emotions. Also,
anyone should be able express his or her emotions instead of holding it and letting it all come out all at
once. First, Some of the American display rules are manners. As an example, when I was younger I
was taught it is unacceptable to belch and not say excuse me at the table with even if the situation is
accidental. My mother would poke arm or pinch my arm as punishment until I would say those
majestic words to make my arm stop hurting. I completely understand why burping at without saying
excuse me is unacceptable now. No one wants to hear anyone else let out gas in any way. It may have
a disgusting same that follows it, and is so unexpected that the belch may offend someone.

Hagia Julia Research Paper
When we regularly take a look at old sanctuaries, we pick up this sort of warm feeling in our souls,
influencing us to address ourselves the entirety of its reality, how it remained to become, and what the
distinctive brilliant occasions that occurred in this place. We investigate history, and learn the
significance of the sanctuary, making it more exceptional than what we definitely know about it. We

the numerous years it had long stood. The building that constitutes a turning point in the historical

the work. The pendentives of Hagia Sophia lay on four immense docks, or columns, which have lead

feet (55 meters high). To make it lighter, the dome was made of an exceptional light brick brought
from the island of Rhodes. Amid the ensuing nine hundred years of the Byzantine Empire, the dome
endured another two scenes of fractional crumple. The fundamental structure as well as the optional
zones was definitely adjusted numerous times giving the building the appearance that it has today. The
builders upheld the dome on two sides with half domes and on the other two sides with arches, to
ensure that it would not collapse. The splendor of Hagia Sophia additionally originates from its color.
The columns, taken from each side of the Empire, are of stone and marble of a wide range of hues,

How Brands Gain Successful Exposure On The Market, And The...
5.1 KNOW THE RULES
The main aim of this study was to investigate the ways brands gain successful exposure in the market,
and the way they build relationships with consumers. Upon researching, it was found that there are
certain brands that do not necessarily follow the current advised procedures for this practice. One of
these brands is Apple Inc., and being one of the most cherished brands of all times, it was decided that
an investigation on its consumers behaviour would possibly shed light over the research question: Are
there exceptions to the current rules in the practice of brand communications and exposure? . To be
able to raise the hypothesis of the exception, the current procedures for successful brand exposure and
communications, were examined and analysed, and then compared to the survey s results on Apple s
consumers opinions.
5.2 SUMMARY OF THE STUDY
The review of literature has provided important information on how the 21st century market is shaped
and influenced by the digital technologies. It was observed that the direct effect derived from the
cultural transformation of the digital ages, has created new ways of receiving information and new
forms of communication amongst people. Consequently, it has also altered relationships between
brands and consumers.
Most experts are suggesting that brands should adjust according to the new rules of the market, which
imply that online existence is essential for achieving successful brand communications and

Cognitive Disabilities In The Boys Next Door By Tom Griffin
How many people do you think are diagnosed with a cognitive disabilities? About one and three
percent of the global population. The play The Boys Next Door by Tom Griffin is about four men with
cognitive disabilities who live together in a home funded by the government. Lucien and Barry, two of
the main characters, have the strongest relationship because Lucien was comforting Barry when he
was sad, and Lucien brought Barry a quarter when he was in the institution, and finally, Lucien and
Barry never talk bad about each other. Lucien is very caring, and he s there for Barry when he needs
him. Barry was talking to Lucien about how worried he was that his dad was coming to visit and
Barry says, I think I ll go inside and get ready for bed. That s what I think I ll do. I ll go inside and get
ready for bed. Lucien then realizes that Barry is sad and says Dads, they be scary sometimes. (Griffin
31). This shows how close they are because Lucien isn t very self aware, but somehow he manages to
realize that Barry is sad. Throughout the play Lucien doesn t ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

When he finds out Jack is going to see Barry in the institution, he asks Jack to give barry a quarter for
a golf lesson when he gets out of the institution. Barry is Lucien s only real friend, so when he finds

shown when Jack says Lucien wanted me to give you this. It s a quarter. He says when you get out he
wants you to give him a golf lesson (Griffin 57). Lucien felt bad because in the play he gave Barry
two pennies for a golf lesson, so he decided to give him a quarter this time. This shows how strong
their relationship is because Lucien actually feels bad for only giving Barry two pennies instead of a
quarter. It shows the audience that Lucien cares about Barry, and he cares what Barry thinks of

I stayed on the mound even when there were three outs. I belonged to both sides. At this point during

on my arm just through a practice. After every inning my coach would look up at me through his
baseball cap squinting. He always said the same line, Janie, you want me to give this a go?
I brushed him off and continued doing what I was there for. I felt if I would walk away then it would
be a book missing a couple chapters. After the game was finished, I stood at the first base line and
watched the losing team doing laps. This concept of running because you lost always made me think. I
tried to incorporate this into everyday life. If you failed a game of red rover or you did poorly on a
test, would this be an incentive to do better. Could you really look at this as something more then a
punishment? Running your sins away. Maybe this view on life is closer to me then I think. In the
Jewish religion we have a day of repentment, Yom Kippur, which occurs once a year. This holiday
gives you a clean slate for all the mistakes you ve made but maybe on an everyday stand you need to
make sacrifices to yourself to have this pure slate once again. Instead of looking at the team who loses
running after the game as a punishment maybe it s a way to cleanse your mind and forget your
mistakes, to start over fresh. I felt weird just standing there and

those though who prefer roughing it in a tent, and getting truly back to nature and there are those who

The Problem Of Contagion And Its Effect On The Contagion...
Contagion is defined as the relationship that exists in returns above and afar the economic essentials
like exposure to common international risk factors (Cai Wong, 2010 p. 10). To control the possible
effects of frequent exposure to necessities in enhancing the contagion correlation, the research will
filter the country s index returns for familiar exposures. The filtering will define the deviations from
the predictable correlation in proceeds based on the economic fundamentals. The research will regress
the returns of every nation individually using some variables using a regression model. Testing for the
worst return contagion To capture the cross border contagion in proceeds, the research will utilize the
value approach that will test whether the trial observations in the filtered returns are related across
nations. Trial observations are the filtered returns in the lower deciles of a nation s time series
allotment over the whole sample period. The research will use the logit model to tackle the problem of
contagion by approximating whether a specified nation is more expected to have the worst return in a
specified week, restricted to other countries having as well experienced the worst return in the
preceding week. The dependent variable is an indicator variable that is set to one in case the local
nation index under study has a weekly return in the lower deciles of every weekly proceeds for that
nation and zero otherwise (Morrison White, 2013 p. 645). To evaluate

In just a short span of four years, over six million Jews alone were slaughtered in an event called the
Holocaust. Eliezer may have survived the odious events of the Holocaust, but the ways it has affected
him will have changed Eliezer forever. The memoir the Night by Elie Wiesel shows the transformation
of Eliezer physically, mentally, and spiritually during the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel s immediate and most
easily recognized changes throughout the memoir were his physical changes. At the beginning of the
memoir, Eliezer is in good condition and does not have any disabilities. The memoir does not mention
Eliezer having any specific problems about him and does not single out any sort of sicknesses that he

Recruitment And Retention Of Nontraditional Students
Recruitment and Retention of Nontraditional Students
The reality for career technical educators with regard to broadening representation of both men and
women in nontraditional careers is that there needs to be a creative recruitment strategy designed that
utilizes the enthusiasm and talents of successful role models (Lucci Jr., W., 2007). Effective
recruitment and teaching practices can help educators create learning situations that are conducive for
all students to learn, especially those nontraditional students in career clusters. Suggestions for
recruiting nontraditional students include creating career technical programs to reach all students,
presenting career clusters in a way that shows how career pathways can align with interests, giving
students multiple opportunities to explore both traditional and nontraditional careers. Educators should
market career technical programs to reach all students, making a concerted effort to attract
nontraditional students through the use of photos and graphics that show both genders and various
races in careers at the technical and professional levels (Clark, P., Ohio State Univ., C. y., 2000).
In recruiting nontraditional students, intentionality and good planning are important. Unfortunately,
lingering stereotypes often make the first step of signing up for a class in a nontraditional area
difficult. Strategies which are effective are those that understand and consider the target audience,
provide information in a way in which

The Liberation From England s Despotism
In a very short time, the United States grew from thirteen small colonies that were governed by a
monarchy over 3,000 miles away into a self sustaining democratic nation of fifty states. The liberation
from England s despotism occurred not by accident or happenstance, but from a collective whole of
society whose moral resolve led to the famous phrase Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
(National Archives, 1776) written in America s Declaration of Independence 239 years ago. These
certain inalienable rights are our nation s backbone for what we stand for and what we believe in. Our
government, the government our forefather s created, is responsible for the freedoms we experience
on a daily basis. However, what are we doing as a nation to ensure that the same rights and reasons for
which they fought for are being preserved so that we not only retain our present way of life but also
improve upon it for ourselves and future generations to come? When government is spoken of often it
sounds as if it is its own entity enabled to make its own decisions free from repercussions as well as
accountability. As if it was a person that could be disciplined for misbehaving. The government did
this...or the government did that...or can you believe what they are doing in Washington? Have we
forgotten what President Lincoln said in his Gettysburg Address: ...That the nation, shall have a new
birth of freedom, and that government of the people by the people for the people, shall not

Potential Explanations
US Israeli relations often appear to focus on America s ability to enforce its sphere of influence in
Israel by its diplomatic and monetary utility. Since 1976, Israel has been the most exponential annual
recipient of US aid and the largest recipient of cumulative US assistance since World War II. The US
had provided over 95% of economic development assistance and food aid to Israel, totaling to roughly
$68 million per year between the years of 1949 and 1965. From 1966 through 1970 aid increased to
about $102 million to include an estimated military loan increase of 47%. From 1971 to the present,
US aid to Israel has averaged over $2 billion per year; two thirds of which has been military assistance
(Sharp,2015). The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Prospect theory may help explain these anomalies. This theory provides a framework for the
evaluation of alternative choices made by individuals, firms and organizations. The first case to be
examined is the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982 which is exemplary of Israel s occasional
nonconformity to US requests. In summary, Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) invaded Lebanon despite
President Reagan s execution of a cease fire. This act of non compliance beckons the question, why
did Israel accept the risk of having sanctions imposed on them by their primary financier? Or why
didn t the US influence over Israel manifest favorable actions for the US? There is potential for an
explanation by applying the Prospect theory model to the Invasion of Lebanon case study. Israel
initially complied with President Reagan s cease fire initiative until Israel constructed a perception
that benefits would accrue from engaging the perceived threat of the enemy. Israel believed that while
the cease fire was implemented the PLO were strengthening themselves while they, Israel, was
faltering (losses) under the cease fire restrictions. Israel evaluated two alternative choices, the first
choice was to continue compliance with the US cease fire initiative or alternatively, to disregard the

The Bloody Root Of Titus Andronicus
The Bloody Root of Titus Andronicus: An Argument of Intent and Origin
There are have been many arguments throughout the history of Shakespearean academia regarding the
validity of Shakespeare s authorship to Titus Andronicus, and the critics have not been shy to express
their discontent of its seemingly endless violent montage. As Michael Fentiman and Harold Fuller
point out of what Dr. Samuel Johnson spoke to in 1765,
all the editors and critics agree in supposing this play spurious...for the colour of style is wholly
different from that of the other plays, the barbarity of the spectacles and the general massacre which
are here exhibited can scarcely be tolerable...That Shakespeare wrote any part...I see no reason in
believing (Fentiman). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Virtually, all the central characters killed each other off in a downward spiral of luscious revenge
(Shakespeare). It is striking in its contrast to the likes of Romeo and Juliet or Hamlet or Macbeth to
where Shakespeare dove deep into the emotions and psyche of human life (RedEyesTakeWarning).
Violence and death were not foreign concepts to the people of the Elizabethan era, as medieval life
was chocked full of war, famine, and plague. In the case of entertainment, violence and death were no
strangers as people would flock to see bear baiting, including Queen Elizabeth. (Mabillard).
Allistair Brown claims that we take entertainment out of simulated violence because it is cathartic
(Brown). Brown also argues that, Violence becomes comic because laughter, denying the reality or
seriousness of whatever threatens, is a way of dealing with trauma (Brown). With the world being
consumed with death at every doorstep, what is so far fetched at the notion that Titus Andronicus is an
extremely dark comedy to help a broken soul cope with the grim reality of medieval life? As there is
almost nothing else for society to take away as a benefit from the play (RedEyesTakeWarning), what
else could it be? There are already plenty of examples in literature that deliver morals and lessons
learned from seeking revenge. Why

Symbolism In A Clean Well-Lighted Place

A Clean, Well Lighted Place The short story A Clean, Well Lighted Place by Ernest Hemingway is
about an old man who is sitting alone at night in a café. He is deaf and there are two waiters who are
watching him carefully because if he gets too drunk they know he will not pay. While the old man is
having his drink the whole story mainly revolves around the conversation of the older waiter with the
younger waiter. None of the characters are referred by their names they are known as The Old Man,
The Older Waiter, and The Younger Waiter to the readers. The author conveys the idea of light and
darkness symbolized in the characters and the café.
While in the café when the waiters were speaking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The café is seen as a place where people with despair and problem can go to and forget about it. It
represents the opposite of nothingness it s clean and good lighted whereas nothingness is confusing
and dark. When the older waiter describes the nothingness that he is getting into, he says, It was only
that and light was all it needed and a certain cleanness and order (383). The author doesn t really
explain what he means by it but we can assume it is referring to life meaning that life and man are
nothing but light, cleanness and order can be counted as something. If the café is clean and well
lighted hence in the title, despair can be kept away. Another point the older waiter makes about the
café why it needs these specific elements is because he needs the café to be clean and pleasant. You do
not want music. Certainly you do not want music. (382) The most important thing he needed was light
in the café. Light is very important in the café because light removes the darkness. It is like when
people are scared of darkness and all they are looking for is light. When the older waiter has locked up
and was walking off he describes the awful nothingness of life nada y pues nada y nada y pues nada

Notorious Crimes In The 1920 s
1920s Notorious Crimes and Society
In the 1920s, notorious crimes and trials greatly impacted American culture and daily life. Some of the
major crimes are ones created by Al Capone. Al Capone was a big part of crime in the 1920s because
he could control the whole city of Chicago during prohibition. He was behind the St. Valentine s
Massacre and earned nearly 60 million dollars selling illegal alcohol (History). Leopold and Loeb was
disturbing in that the young boys would kidnap and kill for a ransom. All of these crimes committed in
the 1920s have greatly affected culture and daily life. Al Capone owned the city of Chicago during
prohibition. By the age of 26 he had become the most powerful crime boss of his day (Sifakis). He

The people who committed the crime were Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold both young and
intelligent students (Linder). The crime happened in Chicago in 1924. Lots of people called it as the
first trial of the century (Linder). When a trial is called something like that, it probably affected the
culture and daily life of many americans. The crime captured national attention (Linder). 18 year old
Loeb was obsessed with crimes, he planned them, and committed them (Linder). None of the crimes
he did were as serious as the one that struck the nation (Linder). He was the youngest graduate ever at
the University of Michigan (Linder). His 19 year old partner Leopold was also an intelligent person.
He was a law student at the University of Chicago, and was planning on going to Harvard Law school
(Linder). With the expectation of these young kids, people would wonder why they would do such a
thing. They planned out their crime for months and it wasn t their goal to murder someone (Linder).
Their original plan was to kidnap the child of a wealthy family and ransom to get some money, but the
14 year old victim, Bobby Franks, was an acquaintance of the two boys (Linder). He was in the wrong
place at the wrong time. Clarence Darrow, their lawyer described their relationship as weird and
almost impossible, which could have been a reason for the murder (Linder). It is thought that Leopold

As young children, we all learn by doing. Toddlers learn to walk on their own with their parents
standing by as guides, providing a safe environment that makes it possible for the child to learn. When
a child enters the formal education system, unfortunately this rich environment of learning by doing
often disappears. The education system is still stuck in the industrial age with classrooms more often
designed for teaching rather than for learning purposes.

A well designed simulation meets all of John Keller s goals in the ARCS model (attention, relevance,
confidence and satisfaction). It presents a problem to be solved, allows the learner to make choices,
shows the consequences of those choices, and builds confidence in the learner when the problem is
mastered.
There are five major characteristics of simulations:
Simulations are problem based units of learning that are set in motion by a particular task, issue,
policy, crisis, or problem. The problems to be addressed by the participant may be either implicit or
explicit, depending on the nature of the simulation. The issues inherent in the simulation are not
textbook problems or questions in which answers are cut and dried and determined quickly.
Participants carry out functions associated with their roles and the settings in which they find
themselves. The outcomes of the simulation are not determined by chance or luck. Instead,
participants experience consequences that follow from their own actions. Participants experience
reality of function to the extent that they fulfill their roles conscientiously and in a professional
manner, executing all the rights, privileges and responsibilities associated with the role.

Art Vs Old Art
Art is a good way for people to relax and admire the power of human creativity, a lot of pieces of art
will make you agape at the beauty of it. However, old art pieces created centuries ago are starting to
fall apart. Scientific studies are being conducted on each piece of art trying to figure out how exactly
the artist created these masterpieces, and to possibly find a way to stop them from withering away, and
to keep them around for many more centuries to come and so many more generations of people can
see. Science has some part in everything, even art. There are many different ways science is involved
in art, they can conduct a study on what people like in art to try make a new masterpiece, or why
people are so infatuated with the older pieces. However, this is not the main studies on art. Old art is
falling apart and we need to find a way to fix it. A group of scientists from Italy have started a
program called MOLAB in which they go to art galleries across the world and study art pieces. They
have looked at countless pieces across the world, and have figured out the many different colors in
some art pieces which can range to about 600 different colors; they also find out how many layers of
paint are on one painting or on one specific spot. Jason Palmer, a scientist working for MOLAB was
working on a newer painting called Victory Boogie Woogie by Piet Mondrian said this painting is
definitely one of the newest pieces of work i ve ever looked at, it is very bright

Hydraulic Civilizations and the Philanthropic Industrialists
1. Historical Origins
For many planners and historians the origin of ancient cities has been a source of fascination and the
cause for much research and debate. One theory developed by the German American historian Karl
Wittfogel was that of hydraulic civilizations (Minnery 2010a). Hydraulic civilizations were described
as those whose agricultural system was reliant upon significant government directed water systems for
irrigation and flood management (Encyclopædia Britannica 2010). Wittfogel listed that Egypt, India,
Mesopotamia, Northern China and pre Columbian Mexico and Peru were examples of hydraulic
civilizations (Minnery 2010a). This paper will focus on the theories of the Wittfogel s hydraulic

One other dissimilarity is that of Brisbane s environment. It isn t arid or semi arid in fact it was once
lined with sand covered beaches and the water was clear and blue (Our Indooroopilly 2002). Therefore
it is difficult to prove that Brisbane has similar qualities to that of a hydraulic civilization and
Wittfogel s theories can be left in the past with the Old World . 3. The Philanthropic Industrialist
The United Kingdom in the late eighteenth and nineteenth century was home to the bustling and
demanding Industrial Revolution. Factories emerged all over the country as technology advanced into
an era of mass production. In many of these factories the conditions were unclean, unsafe and
ultimately appalling. Some factory owners however, sought out to improve the quality of life for their
workers. These few are recognised as the Philanthropic Industrialists . They implemented what has
become known as the company town which saw the social and economic qualities of the township
under the control of the industrialist (Pollard 1964). This paper will discuss one UK example in the
town of New Lanark, in particular the philanthropy of Robert Owen and will examine whether this
town and Owen s theories have been influential up until the present day.
New Lanark in Scotland was initially founded by David Dale in 1785 (The Open University 2009).

Reasons For The Cuban Missile Crisis
During 1962, the United States and the Soviet Union were in conflict due to the Soviet Union placing
missiles in Cuba, known today as the Cuban missile crisis. In attempt to avoid nuclear conflict and
force the removal of the missiles, Kennedy was faced with three options; to bomb the missile sites
and/or conduct both sea and airborne landings, or blockade the island and reassure the removal of the
missiles. Kennedy decided to blockade Cuba as it was the only option that would result in the removal
of the missiles without it escalating to war. The Cuban missile crisis was the closest the Cold War was
to developing into war. This thirteen day long confrontation between the United States and the Soviet

Kennedy had three options: To bomb the missile sites, to bomb the sites and conduct both sea and
airborne landings, or to blockade Cuba and to confirm the transfer of the missiles from the island. At
first, Kennedy was enraged and wanted to attack the missile sites, but the issue was whether to let
Khrushchev and Castro know his plan. If he had let them know, the Soviet Union could have
responded earlier by striking against Berlin or their bases in Turkey. However, if it would be a surprise
attack many people would be killed, equalling to further conflict. Kennedy reasoned it would not be a
good idea due to the fact it was impulsive and the consequences would be drastic. The Joints Chiefs of
Staff added that a surprise air strike would lead to an invasion.Although the air strike proposal was
done for, the Joints Chief of Staff argued against the blockade debating that it would be inefficient and
useless. Not only did they mention that the blockade would not remove the missiles for the simple fact
that they were already there, but they also pointed out that doing so would cause the Soviet Union to
do it also. Forcing the removal of the missiles would mean the United States would have to remove
their missiles surrounding the Soviet Union too, or so they thought. Although a blockade had its cons,
it was the safer way to go and would cause less extreme consequences according to Secretary
McNamara and Robert F. Kennedy. These three proposals all had their cons; Some more than others,

I am going to look back at a situation on my unit in the operating room (OR) where I implemented a
change using some of the distinguishing characteristics authentic leaders posses according to Maria
Shirey in 2006. I have worked in the OR for 13 years and have witnessed many changes take place,
both good and bad. Our situation was unique because staffing coverage must be 24 hours due to our
level 1 trauma status. The RN s brought forward the current system used for scheduling during
holidays was unfair with no apparent pattern. It was very random with many of the same RN s
working the majority of the holidays. Nurses comments ranged from, Why am I always on the major
holidays, I never get to spend the holidays with my family, and the same people are getting the
holidays off, why is that? Management overlooked the fairness for covering the schedule. Holiday
coverage is reduced to two teams and a charge nurse which consists of five staff members, allowing
more staff to be off. Everything was status quo to management until it was mentioned at a staff
meeting with much dissatisfaction.
I was asked by my manager to lead a committee of RN s. She chose the staff to participate on this
committee. The goal was to propose a new system for holiday scheduling that was fair and systematic.
My leader was empowering her staff to make positive changes; she was encouraging creativity by
motivating her followers (Grossman Valiga, 2013).

Kilamuwa Relief Summary
In the article The Kilamuwa Relief: Ethnicity, Class and Power in Iron Age North Syria, the author
Brian Brown argues that the Kilamuwa relief expresses the ethnic identity of its makers, as understood
by the members of the ruling class. He writes that the relief does not reflect a long standing identity,
but rather, expresses a new identity created for the upper class by the king Kilamuwa. The author
supports his thesis by analyzing several aspects of the relief. He first notes the architectural setting.
The relief is located in a royal monumental building, which is a typical Assyrian practice, and it is not
near the town s gates (344 5). Brown believes that this, along with the ruler s comment of the
ineffectiveness of past rulers, may indicate a rejection of those who came before him (345). This may
be the king s way of representing a distinct break from earlier practices (348). By breaking from
architectural practices, he is representing his break from past cultural practices and forming a new
definition of his people s identity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of this language was a major innovation. The author connects the use of this script with the
conflict occurring between two groups of people in this king s state, the mushkabim and B RRM,
which some believe to be Aramaens and Luwians (345). Phoenician is a non native language, and
would have therefore been neutral (346). Brown speculates that Kilamuwa used a neutral language in
order to strengthen his claim in the text of being a reconciler of conflict and a just and fair ruler (346).
Brown also believes that his action would have served to unify Kilamuwa s people and dispel internal
division

Louisiana had another flood and the people went into panic mode. Two media sources reported people
wading through water from a grocery store. An African American couple they labeled as stealing. The

imperative for people to think outside of their box and explore the whole of social media. The picture

Using Sglt 2 Inhibitors With Insulin Essay
USING SGLT 2 INHIBITORS WITH INSULIN IN TYPE 2 DIABETES: CLINICAL
IMPLICATIONS
Mathew John, Deepa Gopinath
Introduction
Diabetes and its complications account for significant healthcare costs in developed countries. The
control of hyperglycemia forms the cornerstone in managing diabetes. United Kingdom Prospective
Diabetes Study (UKPDS) has shown that improving blood sugars can result in reduction in onset of
retinopathy, microalbuminuria and neuropathy. Follow up of the subjects in UKPDS after 10 years
have shown a distinct improvement in outcomes like mortality, microvascular disease and
macrovascular disease in subjects who were intensively controlled. Various classes of oral anti
diabetic agents, insulin and GLP 1 agonists form the armamentarium against hyperglycaemia. Despite
the availability of these agents, the overall control of hyperglycaemia remains suboptimal. Sodium
linked Glucose Co Transporter 2 (SGLT 2) inhibitors form a new class of agents that act on the kidney
by competitively blocking the SGLT 2 channels. These agents are approved by FDA to be used as
monotherapy or in combination with Metformin, Sulphonylurea (SU), Pioglitazone, or insulin. The
ADA practice guidelines have added SGLT 2 inhibitors as the first add on to Metformin along with
other drugs like SU, Dipeptyl Peptidase 4 (DPP4) inhibitors, thiazolidinedione and basal insulin.

Thomas Jefferson And Martin Luther King Jr.
We are all pretty familiar with Thomas Jefferson and Martin Luther King Jr., both being significant
historical figures, fighting for different ideas. During the 1700s , Jefferson was growing up in a rich
white environment and privileged to the extent where he is later classified as an American founding
father. A very different background compared to the majority of the colonies population at that time
and two distinct relations shared between them. Unlike Jefferson, Dr. King was raised by a faithful
family and a religious environment while being targeted in a discriminative and racist atmosphere,
resembling the expected stereotypical lifestyle of an African American male during the 1900s . Unlike
many other African Americans, King achieved the near impossible in getting as far as an education;
the pressure in even attending a segregated school was overwhelming for a lot of African American
individuals. Since we looked at both very distinct lifestyles, we can probably guess how and where the
motives behind Jefferson s Declaration of Independence and Dr. King s I Have A Dream came about.
Comparison and contrast wise, what are the propositions Jefferson and King have for the topic of
equality? Does Jefferson s perspective on equality contradict or corroborate with Dr. Kings ? But
when you really get down to it, do either ones perspective have similar traits to what kind of society
we are living in or is it too irrational to justify? Beginning myself, the main issue that

Theme Of Animals In 1984
The animals of Orwell s novels often represent a much less clear cut purpose than those of his
reflections in Burma. Here the animals are fully symbolic, and appear not initially for accuracy of
events, but to specifically bring meaning and significance to human plight or human interaction.
Although Orwell invokes this animal symbolism in his earlier novels including Burmese Days, Orwell
s use of the nature of animals for political understanding and motivation is best seen in his last two
novels, 1984 and Animal Farm. Rats are used as a form of torture in 1984, as the protagonist Winston
s deepest fear. At the base level, rats represent a fear of disease, danger, lurking, death, and darkness
that is reflected throughout human history. Orwell ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Cycles of International Conflict
Wars have been waged for decades creating the world we live in today. Charles Tilly observed, the
state made war and war made the state (qtd in Sernau, 2009, 147). However, these battles have been
destructive and bloody resulting in the deaths of countless individuals. These grave consequences lead
us to ask the ever problematic question, what could possibly motivate a state to engage in warfare?
Fundamentally, some believe war is linked to a conflict of political and economic interests rooted in
power struggles ranging from territorial and humanitarian to ideological and ethnic while others argue
that war has become ingrained in our societies and economies resulting in this tenacious cycle of
confrontation. Territories are the bases ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of these countries include Korea, Vietnam and Cuba (Kent, 2006). An additional factor of
international conflict has to deal with ethnic and cultural disputes. Goldstein and Pevehouse believe it
is the most one of the most important sources of conflicts in today s world (Goldstein and Pevehouse,
2009, 127). Samuel Huntington is a firm believer that international conflict is becoming closely linked
to ethnicity which he outlines in his clash of civilizations theory. Huntington divides the world into
eight major civilization outlined as Western, Confucian, Japanese, Islamic, Hindu, Slavic Orthodox,
Latin American and African (Huntington, 1993). He then goes on to add that As people define their
identity in ethnic and religious terms, they are likely to see an us versus them relation existing
between themselves and people of different ethnicity or religion which leads to the clashes of
civilizations (Huntington, 1993).
A big factor in ethnic conflict is often territorial and linked to self determination. As Goldstein and
Pevehouse point out, ethnic groups have strong aspirations and nationalist sentiments for statehood
(Goldstein and Pevehouse, 2009, 127). The Kurds are a relevant and current example of an ethnic

The Southwest Creation Story
The Southwest creation story is a myth which explains why people are different.
The myth begins by saying that there were people on earth who were all alike, meaning there weren t
people who were black, white, oriental, etc.. It states that the humans on earth all generally were the

The Duke pretended he was dead with his mouth hung open and he had his lips very dry.
The girl was worried, she thought he was dying so she gave him one drop of water. The Duke instantly
jumped back up and tore apart the cage. The children were terrified. He came over to them and
promised them that they will be rewarded for their deed. He gave them a small egg and told them to
plant it in the ground and then he left. When the man came back he was shocked by what had
happened. He knew the Duke would be very angry and would punish him. So he didn t waste any time
and started to build a ship. After a month s time the ship was finished. It was built out of the strongest
material known to him.
Meanwhile the egg the children planted had grown to a size of about two small people. Then one day
what the man had anticipated came. Huge torrential downpours of rain started and there were
tremendous floods. The man jumped into the ship he built, in his panic he had forgotten about the
children. They had ran into the egg which had become soft. The floods were so great that the man in
his ship reached all the way to the door of the heavens. He banged the doors and yelled let me in! The
gods didn t want mortals in the heavens, so the Duke was ordered to recede the floods.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Extraction
Chapter Five
Discussion
Extraction is a process by which substances and active constituents are separated from the original
matrix, extraction process depends on many physical and chemical characteristics. Extraction is
divided into two types liquid phase extraction and solid phase extraction depending on the physical
phase of extraction agent(Rezaee et al., 2006). In our study, we have adopted liquid phase extraction
for several reasons. Firstly, simple, inexpensive, relatively precise and wide range methods for
separation, identification, and quantification of drugs, poisons, and herbal medicine. Secondly, An
equilibrium distribution is established by the ratio between two phases will be influenced by the
choice of the extracting solvent, the pH value of the aqueous phase and the ratio of the volumes of the
organic to aqueous phases (Ahadi et al., 2011). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
regia unripe fruit using two extraction methods (microwave and soxhlet methods). The selection of
solvents was based on the gradual increase in the polarity, ethyl acetate, acetone, ethanol, methanol,
and water. The highest efficient solvent for extraction was water as the total yield weight of the
extracts was 3.4 g in the fatted and defatted J. regia using microwave and soxhlet methods. Whereas,
the lowest efficient solvent for extraction was ethyl acetate as the total yield weight of the extracts was
only 0.74 g. The increase in the polarity of the extraction solvent has conferred a significant increase
in yield amount as there were 4.6 fold increases in the amount of yield between the lowest polarity
solvent (ethyl acetate) and the highest polarity solvent (water) regardless to the extraction

Essay on America’s Children Deserve Charter Schools
America s education is failing, and serious reform is needed. The topic of education has been in the
forefront over the last few decades. Many, including politicians have attempted to tackle what seemed
to be a hopeless situation. With all the corruption and bureaucracy within the system, it is unlikely that
this problem will be resolved anytime soon. However, there is hope amidst all this, and that is charter
schools. Charter schools impact education by having passionate teachers who truly care for their
students well being, use up to date school methodology, are able to function with less bureaucracy, and
have accountability that results in less corruption, and increased cost efficiency.

According to the documentary, a bad teacher covers only fifty percent of the assigned curriculum,
compared to effective teachers who can teach up to one hundred and fifty percent of the assigned
curriculum (Guggenheim Chilcott, 2010). Sadly, more and more teachers have lost the passion to
teach. Some of them may even be in the profession simply because it pays. Well, charter schools
employ many passionate teachers who truly care for the students well being. These teachers are
equipped and trained to give the students their all, providing one on one mentoring to students that are
falling behind, making sure that students get caught up with the curriculum, giving them hope and a
promising future. Since children attending school spend most of their time inside a classroom,
teachers in charter schools take advantage of this opportunity and utilize as much time afforded to
them to instill positive values, goals, and dreams that students can aspire to. This is not to say that
there are no passionate teachers in the public sector, this is simply highlighting what charter schools
have to offer.
The antiquated educational model our schools stubbornly cling to was designed well over a century
ago to meet the demands of an emerging industrial economy (Mercogliano, 2005, p.2). In his article,

My Thoughts on Marijuana Essay
My Thoughts on Marijuana
What Is Marijuana, a drug obtained from dried and crumpled parts of the ubiquitous hemp plant
Cannabis sativa (or Cannabis indica). Smoked by rolling in tobacco paper or placing in a pipe. An
estimated 200,000,000 persons for pleasure, an escape from reality, or relaxation, also otherwise
consume it worldwide.
Marijuana is known by a variety of names such as kif in Morocco, dagga in South Africa, and bhang
in India. Common in the United States, marijuana is called pot, grass, weed, Mary Jane, bones, etc.
The main active principle of cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol. The potency of its various forms ranges
from a weak drink consumed in India to the highly potent hashish. The following consists of pure ...

The available data suggested, this is not so, Marijuana occasionally produces acute panic reactions or
even transient psychoses. Furthermore, a person driving under the influence of marijuana is a danger
to themselves and others. If smoked heavily and a great deal of consistency, its use has been clearly
associated with mental breakdown. In many persons who smoke chronically, the drug reinforces
passivity and reduces goal directed, constructive activity. The chronic use of pure resin (hashish) has
been associated both with mental deterioration and criminality. One of the major complications of
marijuana use is the tendency on the part of some users to progress to more dangerous drugs. Users in
economically deprived areas usually go on to heroin, whereas more affluent individuals tend to move
from marijuana to more potent hallucinogens such as LSD. There is no established medical use for
marijuana or any other cannabis preparation.
In the United States, its use is a crime and the laws governing marijuana are similar to those regulating
heroin. Many authorities now urge that the laws be modified to mitigate the penalties relating to
conviction on marijuana possession charges. The Case For Legalizing Marijuana Use The United
States stands apart from many nations in its deep respect for the individual. The strong belief in
personal freedom appears early in the nation s history. The Declaration of Independence speaks

Mullelr and Glial Cells Essay
This experiment was done to determine the main purpose Muller cells, a type of glial cell, and its cell
regions have in the body. The Muller cell s endfoot was of particular interest, and scientists wanted to
observe the affects the endfoot has on conductance and resistance, as well as its overall purpose. The
results from this experiment could then provide us with a more generalized view of the purpose that
other glial cells, especially astrocytes, have in the brain. It was hypothesized that if most of the Muller
cell s conductance was located in the endfoot, then the resistance in the endfoot would also vary
significantly compared to the rest of the cell and this would have huge impacts on how potassium ions
removed from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The measurement of resistance in the Muller cell with the endfoot still intact was much lower than
when the resistance in the cell after the endfoot had been removed. Additionally, when researchers cut
a part of the cell above the endfoot, leaving the endfoot untouched, the cell resistance did increase
slightly, but not by very much. These observations helped to prove that the endfoot, not other parts of
the cell, contributes to most of the cell s resistance, and therefore conductance. When measuring
impedance in the cell, the endfoot impedance increased when penetrated, while other parts of the cell
showed no real changes. When KCl solution was added into the cell and the amount of potassium ion
efflux was recorded along the cell, it was found that about the same amount of potassium efflux
occurred all along the cell membrane, with the endfoot having a much greater efflux of potassium ions
than anywhere else on the Muller cell. All in all, it was determined that the Muller endfoot is not only
where the highest conductance and lowest membrane resistance in the cell is locate, but also where the
most potassium channels are located. Therefore, the endfoot greatly controls how much potassium ion
movement. This goes for Muller

Essay about William Shakespeare s Twelfth Night as a...
William Shakespeare s Twelfth Night as a Feminist Play
I agree to a certain extent that twelfth night is a feminist play. What exactly is feminism? It simply
means subversion of traditional ideas of gender. This means that men are supposed to be active,
rational, wise, perceptive, loyal and trustworthy. On the other hand, Women are supposed to be
passive, emotional, shallow, vain, deceptive and fickle.
I agree to a certain extent that Twelfth Night is a feminist play [meaning that I agree to it] as the
female characters are essentially good and most males in the play have flaws. For example, Sir
Andrew is weak, Sir Toby is a drunkard, Orsino is full of self love and Malvolio is extremely ... Show

The women in this play are also sacrificial. A tremendously good example to proof this is the character
Viola. Viola s love for Orsino is silent and concealed. She is the long suffering woman and her
sincerity is shown in her actions, sacrificing her happiness for Orsino s happiness. Her love for Orsino
is also shown in her silence. She does not indulge in public displays of affection. Rather her love is
silent yet strong and powerful as may be observed in the soliloquy which ends the scene in a rhyming
couplet Yet a barful strife! / Whoe er I wife . These short lines reveal her intense longing and desire for
Orsino. Viola shows a very sacrificial type of love. Viola is in a dilemma which is due to the fact that
she is torn between pleasing Orsino and making him happy by helping him get Olivia and yet the fear
of losing him if she helps him. But despite her dilemma, she tells Orsino that she will do her best/ To
woo his [your] lady . She is sacrificing her own happiness for Orsino s happiness. Unlike Orsino
whose love is not sacrificial at all!
The love he has for Olivia should actually be defined as infatuation because his love is simply not
sacrificial and true love is the total opposite as true love is very sacrificial.
Twelfth Night is also at the same time a play where mostly all the women are witty and intelligent.
Even the female

How The Mighty Fall And Why Some Companies Never Give

addressing the different stages of growth is my case study for the book How the Mighty Fall and Why
Some Companies Never Give In by Jim Collings. Reviewing the 1st stage referring to Hubris born of
success, it is understandable how a successful company could succumb to feelings of invincibility.
SiteOne Landscape Supply was born over several mergers acquisitions by John Deere. Early
acquisitions such as McGuiness Farms, Century Rain Aid, United Green Partners and LESCO created
the foundation of a robust entity known as John Deere Landscapes. In 2013 with funds from a private
investment firm the company renamed itself SiteOne Landscape ... Show more content on

Although the organization survived the financial downturn of 2008 2009 in the home building and
selling market to which it is closely tied, it stayed true to the foundations of the parent company, John
Deere who has utilized a very conservative approach to growth over the years. Here again with the
infusion of new capital and a mission to grow the company might pull away from its core and begin to
feel that success is a guaranteed outcome. The leaders of the organization must continue to evaluate
why they are successful. Feeding the primary flywheel is important and continually asking why is this
working are key to keeping knowledge growing. When constant reexamination occurs and the tough
questions are truthfully answered it becomes much harder for arrogance to take hold. Because of this it
becomes more difficult to stray from the path of discipline which is covered in step 2. Markers for
stage 2 relate back to discipline and these are the areas that a company that is in a growth pattern must
pay close attention. Any company that is growing with plans to pursue and IPO wants to gain size.
Larger revenue streams and increases in the bottom line. In the redistribution field careful attention
must be paid to make sure that acquisitions will contribute to the primary flywheel. The green industry
being so closing tied to the construction industry leads to large

Descartes Meditations On First Philosophy
Conner Ruhl
Professor Copley
Philosophy 1000C
4 May 2015 Descartes, Meditations on First Philosophy Rene Descartes was the first great philosopher
of the modern era, He had a new approach which was focused on scientific and mathematical truths.
Descartes came to reject the scholastic tradition, one of which he was educated, due to his pursuit of
mathematical and scientific truth. Much of Descartes work was done to secure advancement of human
knowledge through the use of the natural sciences. His radical and unorthodox philosophy went
against the church but Descartes managed to cautiously express his radical work in its entirety. In
Descartes Meditations he focuses on universal truths and their proof of existence. In Meditation 5,
Descartes speaks about his proofs of mathematical truths and the existence of god. There are 3 parts
that he focuses on in his Meditation 5 and they are the distinction between fabricated and innate
things, the second proof of gods existence, and his overcoming of the origins argument and recovering
mathematical knowledge.
Descartes speaks about the distinction between innate and fabricated things. An innate thing is defined
as something natural. Fabricated on the other hand is defined as something constructed or
manufactured. According to Descartes, innate ideas have a determinate nature, essence, or form which
is unchangeable and eternal. He uses the example of a triangle to provide proof of this. He points out

Macbeth, By William Shakespeare
In Shakespeare s time, supernatural entities, such as witches or ghosts, were to be feared. It was a
point in history of extremely superstitious people, where women were burned at the stake for being
accused of using magic. At odds with the beliefs of his time, Shakespeare uses the supernatural in a
very logical way, providing a glimpse into his characters unique dispositions through the use of
witches, ghosts, or magic to represent their internal thoughts and struggles. Each play deals with
corruption and morality as a main themes, which are enhanced by the otherworldly elements within
their respective stories. Macbeth focuses on the corruption of unchecked ambition and greed for
power, Hamlet considers the corruption of power and the repercussions of action in the pursuit of true
knowledge and justice, and The Tempest outlines the exploitation of magic on others, or the use of
others for gain by a person of power, and the illusion of justice. Through the use of the supernatural,
Shakespeare provides an external driving force that highlights internal ideas or desires, and provides
insight into the character s mindset throughout each storyline. The supernatural elements of Macbeth,
Hamlet, and The Tempest serve as integral parts to the structure of the plot, and provide the driving
force of their respective stories. Each respective character the metaphysical element interacts with has
internal ambitions for power or revenge, but without the validation of Macbeth s

  • 2. MicroStrategy Ethic Case Study MicroStrategy Scandal Ethics Research Project Graduate Student Management Accounting and Business Problem Solving Overview In March of 2000, MicroStrategy was the subject of an investigation alleging the backdating of contracts and accounting fraud. Executives CEO Michael Saylor, COO Sanju Bansal, and CFO Mark Lynch each paid personal fines of $350,000 and were also ordered to disgorge the combined amount of $10 million in a settlement with the SEC. (Burns, 2012) Contracts were backdated, revenues inflated, reports in which the verifier knew of their inaccuracies were signed and published to the public and as a result stock prices soared and plummeted in the wake of these transgressions. ... (SEC, 2000) Ethical Issues It is important to have at least a good understanding of what we are talking about in regards to not only ethics in general but ethics in business and for accounting specifically, as this case is focused primarily on accounting practices. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants or AICPA had developed five divisions of ethical principles that its members were expected to follow. Those principles are independence, integrity, and objectivity , competence and technical standards , responsibilities to clients , responsibilities to colleagues , and other responsibilities and practices (Sellers, 1981). And even after the recent onslaught of scandals, some of the responsibilities of regulation in public companies have been transferred from them to the government in order to create the Public Accounting Oversight Board or PCAOB, the AICPA does retain a good deal of authority in this area. Accountants and their practices have traditionally been held to very high standards. The most recent publication of the AICPA s Code of Professional Conduct defines a key position as, ...a position in which an individual...has the ability to exercise influence over the contents of the financial statements, including when the individual is a member of the board of ... • 3. Chewing Gum Experiment Hypothesis The topic that I researched was if chewing gum affected concentration. This was interesting to me because I ve seen things on the internet that says Chewing gum helps you remember things or chewing gum helps you concentrate and I wanted to know if it was true. A hypothesis is a prediction statement that you can test, about the relationship between two variables. The hypothesis for this research is that I believe that gum does help you concentrate because it helps you stay alert instead of getting distracted or dozing off. To test this question, there would be two groups of people, one that are chewing gum and one that are not. First, they are going to receive a sheet of paper with 100 basic problems on it. Both subjects are going to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Random assignment is when someone assign a participant to experimental and control groups by chance. This is done to minimize the preexisting differences to the assigned group. To do this, I would need to give everyone one slip of paper, randomly chosen that says group 1 no gum, group 1 with gum, group 2 no gum and group 2 with gum. This would make it so that the groups are chosen randomly. The population would be ten in each group so that would equal forty people in total. These people would be from the same school, and same grade level to ensure that they are around the same age. I would ensure that i have a representative sample, a small quantity of something that accurately reflects the larger population, by testing it on different ages so that it would represent the whole population instead of just one grade level. Experimenter bias is a process where the person performing the research influences the results in order to portray a certain outcome. This would not influence my experiment because everything would be randomized and I wouldn t alter the results because I would want to know the real answer answer to my research question. • 4. 20th Century American Public Schools Essay Teaching Origins in 20th Century American Public Schools Introduction The debate over the origins of the earth and of life has captivated and divided America since the late 19th Century. Evolutionists and creationists have battled in courtrooms , churches , academia , and public schools over the course of the 20th century and continue fighting, or attempting to make peace over, this culture war today. The debate has changed between the time of the Scopes Trial and the present in several important ways. First, creationists have developed many more diverse arguments, and employ not only biblical and moralistic arguments, but scientific evidence, logical arguments, and political rhetoric to counter evolutionary theory. Second, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Evolutionary theory has accrued evidence from diverse scientific fields and is now championed as the centerpiece of biology. Creationism has branched out to include scientific, moralistic, and probabilistic arguments, and its alliance with fundamentalist Christianity has helped it retain political power. Toumey asserts that without the churches, academies, colleges, lobbies, rallies, broadcasts, and mailing lists of the New Religious Right, creationism would be an obscure oddity; with its Religious Right sponsors, however, it becomes a popular sensation that generates difficult public controversy about science education. Evolutionists have largely tried to control curricula at the level of national and state standards, and view the inclusion of creation models in public schools as a central part of the larger problem of the poor quality of science education in American schools. Creationists have typically worked on the local and state level, appealing to first amendment freedoms of religious practice and expression and attacking the validity of evolutionary theory. Historical Overview Since public education in the US has historically been controlled at the local and state level, the content of and emphasis placed on origins education has varied over time and by locality due to pressures from creationist and ... • 5. Taking a Look at Muscular Dystrophy The first written account of Muscular Dystrophy occurred in 1830, composed by Sir Charles Bell (Audrey S. Penn, 2001). His essay, along with many other accounts, display instances of younger boys getting progressively weaker, losing the ability to walk, and dying at extremely early ages. These diagnostics continued to become more frequent up into the late 1800s and early 1900s. As these symptoms were being researched and observed it soon became prevalent that this disease can affect all people of any sex or age. Muscular Dystrophy (or MD) is a general term representing more than 30 inherited diseases and subcategories that affect the skeletal, and in some cases involuntary, muscle regions (Hegde, 2012). The gene is recessively X linked, meaning that females are carriers of the mutation even if they do not have the disease, and males will either have it or not. The X linked characteristic of MD is the reason why most types are seen more abundantly in males. MD can lead to the symptoms seen in the 1800s; inability to walk or function properly, substantial weakness, and potentially death. The reason behind differencing types of MD is because no one case is the same; they are categorized based of the areas of the body that are affected, the ages that symptoms become present, and the level of intensity of the disease. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is present only in boys, from birth; however, symptoms do not usually show until the ages of 3 5. Another widely existing disease is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Character Development In Hamlet And Agamemnon By John F.... A story is generally comprised of five essential elements: characters, setting, plot, conflict and resolution (Penguin Young Readers Group). The characters are a critical component of any story because they allow the readers to relate with different types of behaviour, visualize personalities and engage accordingly. The following stories are centralized around a single character and they all succeed in capturing audience interest: Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, Agamemnon by Aeschylus, and Secret Society Speech by John F. Kennedy. The use of character development in each of the stories is truly effective in gaining audience sympathy and support. The authors introduce the protagonist with sufficient information and maintain that consistency such that the reader can connect with each character and their respective traits and emotions. The similarities in character development are evident as they all target the audience directly using pity. The character of Hamlet showcases his true feelings through his internal conflict (which is oftentimes open for audience interpretation) that develops into an external conflict. The character of Clytemnestra uses her daughter s death to justify her actions and thus, seeks pity from her kingdom as well as the audience. President John F. Kennedy portrays his confidence, fearlessness and competency by addressing the audience head on about criticism of his administration and other errors/wrong doings . Despite being uniquely different characters (two fictional and one non fictional), each protagonist depicts their traits from the beginning, allowing the audience to relate at a personal level. The following similarities are apparent examples of effective character development and reader engagement. Hamlet is introduced in a gloomy mood earlier in Act II as King Claudius asks, How is it that the clouds still hang on you? (Shakespeare, Hamlet: Act 1, Scene 2, Page 3 ). Shakespeare strategically utilizes the character of Hamlet to slowly develop the plot such that the readers understand Hamlet s hatred of Claudius and his mother Gertrude. Similarly, Aeschylus begins with a watchman announcing the fall of Troy, followed by the chorus stating how King Agamemnon sacrificed his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Before the opening seen of the movie there are two messages that come across the screen about violence in South Central, LA. The one message states that one out of every twenty one black American males will be murdered in their lifetime. The other message says that most will die at the hands of another black male. As the movie starts, it talks about two statistics that I found extremely interesting. The first statistic that was put up on screen said one out of every twenty one black American males will be murdered in their lifetime. The next statistic said that most will die at the hands of another black man. At the beginning of the movie it starts off with a little young boy named Tre that lived with his mother. After starting a fight in school, his mom had enough of his actions and Tre voided his contract with him mom saying he wouldn t get into any more fights. His mom sent Tre to live with his father in South Central. Upon arriving at his house he quickly learns the ropes of his father s way of handling things. Tre was not there for five minutes and his father had him raking up the leaves in the front yard. Later on that night his father fills him in on the other rules of the house. This showed me that there was a good discipline in the house. That type of discipline helped Tre out in the long run and changed his life for the better. The theory that I think really explains this movie is the routine activities theory. This theory talks about three requirements, the first being a suitable target, the second is absences of capable guardians, and the final being motivated offenders. Growing up Tre lived in a neighborhood where suitable targets ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Analysis Of No Pda ! Emotions No PDA! I will continue to hear through out my day when I went from class to class at the midst of passing period during high school and middle school. I never knew what teachers meant by saying that until they would start to get on my case about showing some affection to the girlfriend I had at that time. That was when I learned that PDA abbreviates Public Display of Affection and one of the first times I learned an American display rule. At the same time, I believe some manners may contribute to the display rules. Then, the topic of it is unmanly for a man to show their emotions. The other discussion about holding in anger opposed to expressing it. I believe there are limitations to how men show their emotions, but I do believe that men should be able to show their emotions. Also, anyone should be able express his or her emotions instead of holding it and letting it all come out all at once. First, Some of the American display rules are manners. As an example, when I was younger I was taught it is unacceptable to belch and not say excuse me at the table with even if the situation is accidental. My mother would poke arm or pinch my arm as punishment until I would say those majestic words to make my arm stop hurting. I completely understand why burping at without saying excuse me is unacceptable now. No one wants to hear anyone else let out gas in any way. • 10. How Brands Gain Successful Exposure On The Market, And The... 5.1 KNOW THE RULES The main aim of this study was to investigate the ways brands gain successful exposure in the market, and the way they build relationships with consumers. Upon researching, it was found that there are certain brands that do not necessarily follow the current advised procedures for this practice. One of these brands is Apple Inc., and being one of the most cherished brands of all times, it was decided that an investigation on its consumers behaviour would possibly shed light over the research question: Are there exceptions to the current rules in the practice of brand communications and exposure? . To be able to raise the hypothesis of the exception, the current procedures for successful brand exposure and communications, were examined and analysed, and then compared to the survey s results on Apple s consumers opinions. 5.2 SUMMARY OF THE STUDY The review of literature has provided important information on how the 21st century market is shaped and influenced by the digital technologies. The play The Boys Next Door by Tom Griffin is about four men with cognitive disabilities who live together in a home funded by the government. Lucien and Barry, two of the main characters, have the strongest relationship because Lucien was comforting Barry when he was sad, and Lucien brought Barry a quarter when he was in the institution, and finally, Lucien and Barry never talk bad about each other. Lucien is very caring, and he s there for Barry when he needs him. Barry was talking to Lucien about how worried he was that his dad was coming to visit and Barry says, I think I ll go inside and get ready for bed. That s what I think I ll do. I ll go inside and get ready for bed. Lucien then realizes that Barry is sad and says Dads, they be scary sometimes. (Griffin 31). Lucien felt bad because in the play he gave Barry two pennies for a golf lesson, so he decided to give him a quarter this time. I brushed him off and continued doing what I was there for. I felt if I would walk away then it would be a book missing a couple chapters. After the game was finished, I stood at the first base line and watched the losing team doing laps. This concept of running because you lost always made me think. I tried to incorporate this into everyday life. If you failed a game of red rover or you did poorly on a test, would this be an incentive to do better. Could you really look at this as something more then a punishment? Running your sins away. Maybe this view on life is closer to me then I think. In the Jewish religion we have a day of repentment, Yom Kippur, which occurs once a year. This holiday gives you a clean slate for all the mistakes you ve made but maybe on an everyday stand you need to make sacrifices to yourself to have this pure slate once again. Testing for the worst return contagion To capture the cross border contagion in proceeds, the research will utilize the value approach that will test whether the trial observations in the filtered returns are related across nations. Trial observations are the filtered returns in the lower deciles of a nation s time series allotment over the whole sample period. The research will use the logit model to tackle the problem of contagion by approximating whether a specified nation is more expected to have the worst return in a specified week, restricted to other countries having as well experienced the worst return in the preceding week. The dependent variable is an indicator variable that is set to one in case the local nation index under study has a weekly return in the lower deciles of every weekly proceeds for that nation and zero otherwise (Morrison White, 2013 p. 645). Eliezer may have survived the odious events of the Holocaust, but the ways it has affected him will have changed Eliezer forever. The memoir the Night by Elie Wiesel shows the transformation of Eliezer physically, mentally, and spiritually during the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel s immediate and most easily recognized changes throughout the memoir were his physical changes. At the beginning of the memoir, Eliezer is in good condition and does not have any disabilities. The memoir does not mention Eliezer having any specific problems about him and does not single out any sort of sicknesses that he has. Once Eliezer enters the Jewish labor camps however, this all begins to change. The first physical changes that occur with Eliezer is that he loses lots of weight due to the fact that he is constantly being starved and forced to do hard labor. Eliezer describes in the ... An anger then begins to build in Eliezer as more and more horrible events happen in the concentration camps, making him believe that the germans murdered his God and the God now does not care at all about the suffering and deaths of the jewish people in the camps. Recruitment And Retention Of Nontraditional Students Recruitment and Retention of Nontraditional Students The reality for career technical educators with regard to broadening representation of both men and women in nontraditional careers is that there needs to be a creative recruitment strategy designed that utilizes the enthusiasm and talents of successful role models (Lucci Jr., W., 2007). Effective recruitment and teaching practices can help educators create learning situations that are conducive for all students to learn, especially those nontraditional students in career clusters. Suggestions for recruiting nontraditional students include creating career technical programs to reach all students, presenting career clusters in a way that shows how career pathways can align with interests, giving students multiple opportunities to explore both traditional and nontraditional careers. Educators should market career technical programs to reach all students, making a concerted effort to attract nontraditional students through the use of photos and graphics that show both genders and various races in careers at the technical and professional levels (Clark, P., Ohio State Univ., C. y., 2000). In recruiting nontraditional students, intentionality and good planning are important. Unfortunately, lingering stereotypes often make the first step of signing up for a class in a nontraditional area difficult. The Liberation From England s Despotism In a very short time, the United States grew from thirteen small colonies that were governed by a monarchy over 3,000 miles away into a self sustaining democratic nation of fifty states. The liberation from England s despotism occurred not by accident or happenstance, but from a collective whole of society whose moral resolve led to the famous phrase Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (National Archives, 1776) written in America s Declaration of Independence 239 years ago. These certain inalienable rights are our nation s backbone for what we stand for and what we believe in. Our government, the government our forefather s created, is responsible for the freedoms we experience on a daily basis. However, what are we doing as a nation to ensure that the same rights and reasons for which they fought for are being preserved so that we not only retain our present way of life but also improve upon it for ourselves and future generations to come? When government is spoken of often it sounds as if it is its own entity enabled to make its own decisions free from repercussions as well as accountability. As if it was a person that could be disciplined for misbehaving. The government did this...or the government did that...or can you believe what they are doing in Washington? Have we forgotten what President Lincoln said in his Gettysburg Address: ...That the nation, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people by the people for the people, shall not ... Potential Explanations Paper Potential Explanations US Israeli relations often appear to focus on America s ability to enforce its sphere of influence in Israel by its diplomatic and monetary utility. Since 1976, Israel has been the most exponential annual recipient of US aid and the largest recipient of cumulative US assistance since World War II. The US had provided over 95% of economic development assistance and food aid to Israel, totaling to roughly $68 million per year between the years of 1949 and 1965. From 1966 through 1970 aid increased to about $102 million to include an estimated military loan increase of 47%. The Prospect theory may help explain these anomalies. This theory provides a framework for the evaluation of alternative choices made by individuals, firms and organizations. The first case to be examined is the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982 which is exemplary of Israel s occasional nonconformity to US requests. In summary, Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) invaded Lebanon despite President Reagan s execution of a cease fire. This act of non compliance beckons the question, why did Israel accept the risk of having sanctions imposed on them by their primary financier? Or why didn t the US influence over Israel manifest favorable actions for the US? There is potential for an explanation by applying the Prospect theory model to the Invasion of Lebanon case study. Israel initially complied with President Reagan s cease fire initiative until Israel constructed a perception that benefits would accrue from engaging the perceived threat of the enemy. Israel believed that while the cease fire was implemented the PLO were strengthening themselves while they, Israel, was faltering (losses) under the cease fire restrictions. However, old art pieces created centuries ago are starting to fall apart. Scientific studies are being conducted on each piece of art trying to figure out how exactly the artist created these masterpieces, and to possibly find a way to stop them from withering away, and to keep them around for many more centuries to come and so many more generations of people can see. Science has some part in everything, even art. If he had let them know, the Soviet Union could have responded earlier by striking against Berlin or their bases in Turkey. Kilamuwa Relief Summary In the article The Kilamuwa Relief: Ethnicity, Class and Power in Iron Age North Syria, the author Brian Brown argues that the Kilamuwa relief expresses the ethnic identity of its makers, as understood by the members of the ruling class. He writes that the relief does not reflect a long standing identity, but rather, expresses a new identity created for the upper class by the king Kilamuwa. The author supports his thesis by analyzing several aspects of the relief. He first notes the architectural setting. The relief is located in a royal monumental building, which is a typical Assyrian practice, and it is not near the town s gates (344 5). Brown believes that this, along with the ruler s comment of the ineffectiveness of past rulers, may indicate a rejection of those who came before him (345). Using Sglt 2 Inhibitors With Insulin Essay USING SGLT 2 INHIBITORS WITH INSULIN IN TYPE 2 DIABETES: CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Mathew John, Deepa Gopinath Introduction Diabetes and its complications account for significant healthcare costs in developed countries. The control of hyperglycemia forms the cornerstone in managing diabetes. United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) has shown that improving blood sugars can result in reduction in onset of retinopathy, microalbuminuria and neuropathy. Follow up of the subjects in UKPDS after 10 years have shown a distinct improvement in outcomes like mortality, microvascular disease and macrovascular disease in subjects who were intensively controlled. Various classes of oral anti diabetic agents, insulin and GLP 1 agonists form the armamentarium against hyperglycaemia. Despite the availability of these agents, the overall control of hyperglycaemia remains suboptimal. • 34. Thomas Jefferson And Martin Luther King Jr. We are all pretty familiar with Thomas Jefferson and Martin Luther King Jr., both being significant historical figures, fighting for different ideas. During the 1700s , Jefferson was growing up in a rich white environment and privileged to the extent where he is later classified as an American founding father. A very different background compared to the majority of the colonies population at that time and two distinct relations shared between them. Unlike Jefferson, Dr. King was raised by a faithful family and a religious environment while being targeted in a discriminative and racist atmosphere, resembling the expected stereotypical lifestyle of an African American male during the 1900s . Unlike many other African Americans, King achieved the near impossible in getting as far as an education; the pressure in even attending a segregated school was overwhelming for a lot of African American individuals. Since we looked at both very distinct lifestyles, we can probably guess how and where the motives behind Jefferson s Declaration of Independence and Dr. King s I Have A Dream came about. Here the animals are fully symbolic, and appear not initially for accuracy of events, but to specifically bring meaning and significance to human plight or human interaction. Although Orwell invokes this animal symbolism in his earlier novels including Burmese Days, Orwell s use of the nature of animals for political understanding and motivation is best seen in his last two novels, 1984 and Animal Farm. The form of pigs for the dictators of Animal Farm reflect specifically in western culture and perception of their relationships to human beings, media portrayal, and ultimately as a tool to define what is civilized and [sic] uncivilized (1). Instead of comparing pigs to humans, Orwell compares humans to the nature of pigs, blurring the lines between the two, allowing the reader to locate our own exploitative capacities within the beast s meanings (6). Charles Tilly observed, the state made war and war made the state (qtd in Sernau, 2009, 147). However, these battles have been destructive and bloody resulting in the deaths of countless individuals. These grave consequences lead us to ask the ever problematic question, what could possibly motivate a state to engage in warfare? In many persons who smoke chronically, the drug reinforces passivity and reduces goal directed, constructive activity. The chronic use of pure resin (hashish) has been associated both with mental deterioration and criminality. One of the major complications of marijuana use is the tendency on the part of some users to progress to more dangerous drugs. There is no established medical use for marijuana or any other cannabis preparation. In the United States, its use is a crime and the laws governing marijuana are similar to those regulating heroin. The Muller cell s endfoot was of particular interest, and scientists wanted to observe the affects the endfoot has on conductance and resistance, as well as its overall purpose. The results from this experiment could then provide us with a more generalized view of the purpose that other glial cells, especially astrocytes, have in the brain. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The measurement of resistance in the Muller cell with the endfoot still intact was much lower than when the resistance in the cell after the endfoot had been removed. Additionally, when researchers cut a part of the cell above the endfoot, leaving the endfoot untouched, the cell resistance did increase slightly, but not by very much. These observations helped to prove that the endfoot, not other parts of the cell, contributes to most of the cell s resistance, and therefore conductance. When measuring impedance in the cell, the endfoot impedance increased when penetrated, while other parts of the cell showed no real changes. When KCl solution was added into the cell and the amount of potassium ion efflux was recorded along the cell, it was found that about the same amount of potassium efflux occurred all along the cell membrane, with the endfoot having a much greater efflux of potassium ions than anywhere else on the Muller cell. All in all, it was determined that the Muller endfoot is not only where the highest conductance and lowest membrane resistance in the cell is locate, but also where the most potassium channels are located. Therefore, the endfoot greatly controls how much potassium ion movement. This goes for Muller ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
