Infertility Treatments Are Necessary in Today s Society Essay
Infertility Treatments: Is it Ethical?
In recent years, several factors have altered the definition of a family. We live in a time where
careers, education, and work are now put before starting a family, making it more difficult to have
children. The traditional family archetype has changed with a rise in single and homosexual
parenting. This change, even though it is a positive one, can result in several people being unable
to bear children. Infertility treatments have become a popular choice for these people who cannot
have children. These treatments have become popular in books, movies, and other forms, which
has brought attention to the ethics of the practices. The ethics of these treatments are challenged by
the health risks on people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those who are infertile may feel distressed that they are not able to become a parent, especially if
it is one of their life goals. Infertility treatments are vital in giving infertile people the chance to
fulfill their lives with a family.
Infertility treatments need to be available simply for the reason that they are helpful for people
whose health conditions inhibit them from producing a child of their own. According to the CDC,
6% of married women are infertile and 11% of women have troubles getting pregnant. (CDC).
They are also beneficial to single women and men facing infertility issues. People that are infertile
may have problems with reproductive organs, hormonal glands, or genetic disorders that impede on
these couples ability to get pregnant. Infertility can be difficult to those trying to get pregnant.
Research has shown that infertility has negative emotional and psychological effects on a person
facing infertility. People dealing with infertility often feel depressed, distressed, as if they were
grieving a loss. (health.harvard.edu) It can also cause negatives effects on the relationships between
couples facing infertility. Infertility treatments are necessary because they give people facing health
issues the chance to have a child. Health issues should not be a reason why people cannot have
children. Not only are infertility treatments beneficial in aiding people facing infertility but other

Abortion And Abortion
Abortion is a serious ethical dilemma. The practice is not a recent one, there being evidence of the
procedure dating back several millennia and neither is the controversy that comes with it, with
records of laws regulating abortion appearing in texts and manuscripts from a range of civilizations
throughout the years. There has been much debate over whether abortion is a morally sound
practice, and the divisive nature of the issue has resulted in centuries of contention. Many notable
figures and organizations have made use of numerous religious, legal, and ethical standpoints to
develop positions for and against abortion. This essay will be taking a look at abortion through the
lens of two normative ethical theories: Utilitarianismand Deontology, as understood through John
Stuart Mill s Utilitarianism and Immanuel Kants Groundwork of the Metaphysic of Morals
respectively. Utilitarianism is an ethical theory that claims that the best action one can perform is
the one that brings about the most pleasure, happiness or utility. Utilitarianism is extremely
consequentialist in nature, focusing solely on the results of one s actions and not on intentions or
other notions of ideas such as justice or humanity. There are two main branches of utilitarianism:
act utilitarianism and rule utilitarianism. Act utilitarianism essentially states that whether an action
is right or wrong depends on its particular consequences. Rule utilitarianism states that whether an
action is right or wrong depends in part on similar actions, and how those actions promote pleasure
/happiness. Rule utilitarianism came about as a response to criticisms of act utilitarianism, which
claimed act utilitarianism was not feasible as an ethical theory in that it would be impossible to
make decisions that actually promote the greatest utility in every instance one is required to act.
Rule utilitarians believe that instead of making an individual judgement and decision based on
anticipated utility when faced with a situation, it would be better to establish general rules to follow
that, when followed, typically reap the greatest utility. Both rule utilitarianism and act utilitarianism
would presumably have different takes on whether abortion is a

Henry Thoreau Essay
Born in 1817, in Concord, Henry David Thoreau became one of the greatest writers among the
American Renaissance. Thoreau based his whole philosophy on the fact that man needed to get rid
of material things in order to be an individual. An exquisitely educated man, Thoreau went to
Harvard, which placed heavy emphasis on the classics. Thoreaustudied a curriculum that included
grammar and composition, mathematics, English, history, and various philosophies. He also spoke
fluently in Italian, French, German, and Spanish.
After his graduation in 1837, Thoreau became a teacher. He and his brother John, however, closed
the school in 1841, for Thoreau knew writing was his passion. He kept a journal beginning in 1837,

quot;I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude. quot; Thoreau liked
solitude, a time when he wrote from his soul and was truly alone. Thoreau s love for nature was
one of the most powerful aspects evident in Walden.
Considered by some to be the father of the environmental movement, Thoreau referred back to
nature in everything he wrote from essays to political speeches. As a simple man, Thoreau did not
own many material things. For he believed that to own material objects were an obstacle, rather
than an advantage. He saw that most people measured self worth in terms of what they owned,
rather than their spiritual and intellectual gifts.
Thoreau proposed to live as simply as possible and determine what he needed for basic human
survival. quot;My greatest skill is to want but little. quot; He grew his own food, cleaned his
own cabin, and often arranged his affairs so he had to work as little as possible. Published on
August 9, 1854, Walden sold two thousand copies. For one dollar, people read into the depths of
Thoreau s life at Walden Pond and all his views on everything from the anti slavery movement to
his environmental ideas. Walden sold moderately well during Thoreau s lifetime, but his greatest
respects came posthumously.Through the reading of Walden, many people have discovered the
magic of Henry David Thoreau s pen. Just a man from Concord, Massachusetts, he lived an
extraordinary life as a simple man. That, however, was all

Practicing Mindfulness In A Mindful Society
There is no doubt students today operate at uber speed. Their elevated vocabulary, unrivaled
attitudes, and keen technological skills illustrate and exemplify philosophies, temperaments, and
positions related to the sublime to the exalted. With an umbrella catch all words invented almost

Match.com employs business practices that deter, even paralyze members from making

popular with one in every ten American adults [using] an online dating site or a mobile dating app

Pushing Social Change And Toppling The Patriarchy Essay
Pushing Social Change and Toppling the Patriarchy
Television remains an important medium in exposing the viewing public to marginalized ideas,
life styles, and varied ways of thinking. Unlike a film, which usually takes place over a self
contained two hour period, television offers more screen time over the arch of seasons to explore
characters and themes in deeply meaningful and personal ways. Aided by its structure and format,
television programs are able to touch people, helping to change how we all view the world. In
recent years, and amongst the explosion in popularity of platforms such as Hulu, Amazon, and
Netflix, willing to take risks on shows and themes previously perceived as too risquГ© for

Jill Soloway, comedian, writer and director, and pioneering television icon, created Transparent to
make the world a safer place for transgenders and other minorities. As Jill Soloway said at the 2016
Primetime Emmy Awards, she wants to topple the patriarchy and make transgenders and members
of the LGBTQ community heroes (Huffington Post, 2016). Therefore, through examining the
themes of gender identity and religion, both themes presented in the film and in class, Transparent
comments on society s current state and proposes meaningful change.
As Transparent begins, the opening credits offer a glimpse into the ideas of gender. From the
lighting of a candle, symbolizing light into the darkness of life, to a shimmering blue dress
worn by a female impersonator the opening credits reveal the process of becoming a transgender.
Transitioning from a male to a female, or vice versa, is a feat that only a few undertake.
However, in the show Transparent, Mort Pfefferman transitions into Maura Pfefferman, a
masculine figure who blossoms in femininity and bravery. While it is already a difficult task to
come out as transgender, it is made even more difficult in this case because Maura has to deal with
many family dramas revolving around her self absorbed children.
Throughout the first season of Transparent, gender identity is explored and seen through the
challenges that the characters face. For

Comparision of the tragic characters in Othello and King...
The Greek philosopher Aristotle set forth the guidelines for a tragedy in his work Poetics.
According to Aristotle, the tragic character in a tragedy is a person, not all good or bad, who
begins in a rank of high degree and importance and then experiences a downfall due to a tragic
flaw. In the end of most tragedies, the character comes to a realization of his flaw after enduring a
great deal of suffering. William Shakespeare, an English playwright of the 17th century, composed
many tragedies, including King Lear and Othello, which exemplified the characteristics of a tragic
herooutlined by Aristotle. The main characters in King Lear and Othello share many of the traits
essential to tragic characters, yet they differ in their specific... Show more content on

The pride held by Othello and Lear leads to further pride in others. They gain a sense that others
would have no reason to do them harm which leads them both to deceit and poor judgment.
Because Othello thinks highly of himself, he believes others will do the same; his open and
trusting nature allows Iago to take advantage of him. Othello is constantly referring to Iago as
Honest Iago and entrusting him with important duties, such as attending to his wife when he leaves
for Cyprus. Iago scoffs at Othello s trust in him and shows intention of deceit:
The Moor is of a free and open nature,
That thinks men honest that but seem to be so,
And will as tenderly be led by the nose
As asses are. (Othello, I.iii.442 445)
Iago insults Othello by comparing him to a submissive donkey, and he displays an intent of
deceiving Othello in this simile. Lear s pride, like Othello s, causes him to trust others who plan on
deceiving him. Two of his daughters, Goneril and Regan, gain Lear s trust through their flattering
formalistic love speeches by playing into his pride and boosting his self image. Lear is
unsuspecting of the daughters plot against him, and the two go on to take advantage of their father
s poor judgment. Lear trustingly divides his kingdom between them, giving up his power and
entrusting his well being into the hands of these malicious characters. Goneril

Leaders are appointed to serve here on earth on behalf of Christ since Christ is the good and
chief shepherd. Leaders should lead the believers based on how Christ related with the church
when he was on earth[5]. Shepherds had to feed the people of God and to protect them from
predators[6]. Churches today ought to do things how the New Testament churches did[7]. The
New Testament leaders are an example of how church leaders of today should also behave and
work[8]. They ought to be able to teach, guide the believers in the way of God and nurture their
spiritual gifts. The New Testament leaders had to boldly defend the word of God in case of any
false teaching. Basing on this New Testament leadership, it is important to make sure that any
believer appointed to the leadership office has the laid down qualifications[9]. Address to Titus
In the book of Titus, Paul addresses Titus on how to carry out the task of choosing church
leaders. Paul wrote to him so as to challenge him in the way he ought to go. He did this as he was
almost leaving Titus behind to go on with the work of God. Titus was to be left with the duty of
finishing the work that was pending in Crete. He was charged with the task of appointing leaders
for the churches in every town by laying down particular qualifications for the local church
leaders[10]. According to the qualifications, it is apparent that the character of a leader matters a
lot. The qualifications are divided into

Significance Of The Outsiders
The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, features a group of friends who lives in a place much known to
others as the hood . Two of the novel s main characters ,Johnny and Dally, are noticeably different
from their friends, because us ,the readers, see a change in their personalities. The change in
their personalities causes them to make a statement that Johnny is the hero and Dally is the
hoodlum. Although both Johnny and Dally have been deemed a hero or a hoodlum in the eyes
of the reader, what identifies Johnny as the true hero is his attempt in redemption. Johnny and
Dally have been deemed a hero in all the ways that they could be as they have been identified as
hoodlums. Johnny has done one horrible act that may not ever be fixed. I killed him he said
slowly. I killed that boy. I had to. They were drowning you Ponyboy. They might have killed you
(Page 56, Hinton). Johnny killed a Soc named Bob, trying to save his fellow Greaser, Ponyboy.
Johnny took true courage to show the Socs not to mess with the greasers, even though Johnny
took a hoodlum act. After the killing of Bob, Johnny tries to escape with Ponyboy to a church,
with Dally s help. About a week later Dally finds Johnny and Ponyboy and says it all good to come

Cartesian Aesthetics
Journal 2 (Truth)
Introduction
Aesthetics and truth are interlinked as one induces the other. Aesthetics are the philosophy of taste
and beauty and vary from person to person. These determine the varying realities and truths for an
individual. The abilities of a person to identify beauty in things differ from another and this is why
truth also varies among people as it depends upon the notions and conceptions expressed in terms of
assertions.
What is Cartesian Aesthetics and how did/does it affect design? Use specific examples and explore
how the concept of aesthetics is linked to that of truth.
Cartesian aesthetics anticipated that Nature and motivation are same: the procedures that direct

One was the reality of the senses. This is pertinent to the fact that reality of the physical world
includes all that is present in the society, whereas, the second reality is of the mind. The thoughts
and beliefs of an individual form a second reality and it is universal and unchanging. In the second
reality, conceptions of truth, ethics and justice come into play. Hence, the mind decides the truth of
all things by its thoughts and beliefs and no truth is more universal than that. Truth varies from
people to people. This is eminent in the photographs of any photographer. People see what they
want to see in them and various people can see various things in a single photograph depending on
their thoughts.
A person is likely to ask many questions while watching a photograph while some people may ask
different questions3. This is photographers try to convey a singular theme in their photographs so
that the viewers could discern a certain conclusion from them. Although they may agree or disagree
with the conclusion of the theme, they are able to identify the thoughts of the photographer in the
photographs.

Analysis Of Bellezza And The Non-Verbal Realm In Social...
Bellezza and the Non Verbal Realm in Social Interaction
Social interactions influence our relationships and how people view one another. An interaction
can be verbal or non verbal, but still can connect or separate two people. Three articles discuss
different forms of social interactions and how they affect varied types of relationships.
Wicklund, and Vida Grim (2004) describe the role of bellezza in interpersonal relationships.
Bellezza is known as the objects that are pleasing to the senses. These objects refer to the visual,
acoustical, olfactory and tactile aspects of people. Bellezza differs between each person, but
generally follows a few prerequisites, including the absence of pressing drives, cultural
understanding, and input from sensory dimensions. The absence of pressing drives includes an
open mind free of anxiety, fear, and other strong drives, while cultural understanding refers to the
education needed to understand there are different customs for each culture. Lastly, although the
input of several sensory dimensions is ideal for bellezza, it is not necessary to need all sensory
dimensions at the same time. Finally, bellezza can be broken down into short term and long term
preparations. It is necessary to have short term contact such as eye contact, an appropriate distance
apart, and good posture to be open to creating bellezza for another person. In order to maintain
bellezza in the long term, an individual must first develop a solidarity of esthetic impressions, then
agree to meet again in the future.
Bertacco and Deponte (2005) analyzed the communicative experience by comparing letter writing
to emails. Through two experiments, students were asked to write either a letter or email to a
long lost friend. It was hypothesized that participants who wrote an email would be more concise
in their writing, with less references to shared knowledge at the implicit and explicit level in
experiment 1. Thus, perspective taking was measured by the number of a participant s references
to memories with their long lost friend. This was recorded after the letter was finished, where
participants were asked to record as many memories as they could in two minutes. Results from
experiment one show that email

Tax Implications of E-Commerce in Nigeria
ABSTRACT
This paper examines the Tax Implications of E Commerce. The issue of e commerce and its tax
implications continues to receive a high level of attention because of the fast growth of e commerce
activities. In the emerging global economy, e commerce has increasingly become a necessary
component of business strategy and a strong catalyst for economic development. The integration of
information and communications technology (ICT) in business has revolutionized relationships
within organizations and those between and among organizations and individuals. Specifically, the

Countries might differ over where the presence of a facility, the location of customers, the passage
of title or a number of other factors determines where the income arises. E Commerce facilitates
cross border transactions and as a mechanism has particular relevance to international taxation.
Consequently according to Li, Jinyan(2003) while e commerce might not introduce any new
problems, it is apparent that any problem already associated with an inability to synchronize or
inter relate a variety of disparate taxing systems became exacerbated by a model that facilitates the
very types of transactions that result in such problems in the first instance.
A fundamental change in existing tax rules does not appear to be requisite. However internet and e
commerce has increased the need for efficient and equitable tax treatments of firms operating in
multiple tax jurisdictions. Current procedure used by most countries to allocate the tax base
between jurisdictions and to avoid double taxation through a network of more than 1,500 bilateral
double taxation treaties, is not only cumbersome, but will also come under increasing pressure as
the scope and volume of cross border activities expand sharply. This is because the double taxation
treaties are based on the assumption of national sovereignty in tax policy, which will become less
relevant as globalization progresses. Most discussions with respect to

Frankenstein, By Mary Shelley And Parable Of The Sower By...
And the Destiny of Earthseed is to take root among the stars. (Butler 77) The books Frankenstein
by Mary Shelley and Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler are both science fiction novels
warning of a dangerous potential future. Frankenstein looks at the dangers of creating artificially
intelligent beings, while Parable of the Sower explores humansavagery in the collapse of American
civilization as the result of poor political decisions. Each addresses concerns of the time they were
published. While both are pessimistic views of the future and both require the suspension of
disbelief, the concept of dystopia and utopia is definitely apparent in both novels. A dystopia being
a world in which nothing is perfect and a utopia being a perfect world. Frankensteinaddresses a
timeless issue that modern science may soon make a reality, while Parable of the Sower creates an
alarming depiction of conservative leadership.
Frankenstein is an early depiction of the creation of artificial intelligence, an idea with great
significance today. While artificially intelligent beings such as golems exist in myth as the product
of magic, scientific progress has the true potential to make such beings. In modern times, the subject
is frequently discussed with regard to computers being programmed to think, in an imitation of the
human brain. In Frankenstein, the medium used is recycled human body parts stitched together to
create a new human like entity. Whether or not this entity,

Father Flynn in John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt Essay
It is difficult to make the decision if Father Flynn is innocent or guilty. In John Patrick Shanley s
Doubt; a parable, he eclipses the truth very well. The scenes about the toy, the camping trip and the
undershirt cause much confusion; causing the audience to go back and forth in their minds and
doubt Father Flynn. Law says that people are innocent until proven guilty although; realistically,
everyone knows that people are guilty until proven innocent. It is very possible that Father Fynn is
only helping Donald, because he is less fortunate than the other students at his school; and it is also
very possible that he is hurting the child by molesting him. The decision is left to the audienceas the

Maybe take the boys on a camping trip. The point being? (Shanley, 2008)Sister Alyosuis is clearly
dismissing his plan altogether. Much so, because she would never permit something like that,
with her traditional views on how her school was run, and her plans of keeping it that way.
Father Flynn makes the suggestion maybe just for some bonding time with the children, and to
be more appealing to them and their parents. Father Flynn Says to Sister Aloysuis We should be
friendlier. The children and the parents should see us as members of their family rather than
emissaries from Rome. But we are not members of their family. We are different. (Shanley, 2005)
Shanley expresses a fine line between friendly, and too friendly. Father Flynn may have suggested
the trip for a chance to be alone with the boys where no one would see them if he planned on doing
incongruous things with them. Since the trip was only a offer, and Sister Aloysuis would never
allow it, Shanley shows Father Flynn s concept, but never uncovers his real intentions with the kids

Examples Of Irrationality In Macbeth
Out, damned spot! out, I say! This is one of many quotes that represents the constant war between
irrationality and reason in Macbeth (Shakespeare 76). When discussing Macbeth, a highly
influential play written by William Shakespeare, it is important to keep in mind what exactly rules
over Macbeththroughout the story. Does evil truly overcome the last of Macbeth s shreds of sanity?
Is Macbeth a story of acceptance or heinous crimes committed? These questions feel intangible
when first reading Shakespeare s masterpiece, but they can be answered through careful inspection
and thorough research of the playwright s meanings behind each stanza. In the battle of reason vs.
irrationality, irrationality takes over Macbeth s life more than reason, and this is exhibited in
numerous forms. One of these forms stems from the dagger s appearance during Act II.... Show

No reason was found in Macbeth s hallucination of the dagger. The fact that Macbeth is even
envisioning a dagger in which he would use to kill Duncan is irrational. Many would argue that
the dagger is a painting of his guilty conscience, but as he continues to commit more heinous
tyranny in Macbeth, Macbeth sees the dagger once more. It is important to note that later in the
play, Lady Macbeth scolds Macbeth, This is the very painting of your fear;/ This is the air drawn
dagger which, you said,/ Led you to Duncan (Shakespeare 52). The vision of the dagger controls
Macbeth s life before and after King Duncan s death. This shows a lack of reasoning in Macbeth s
head, and he grasps for illogical reasons why Macbeth is feeling the way he does. Another instance
that shows Macbeth s lack of reason and abundance of irrationality taking over his life is the banquet

Define Ethics In Health Care
Ethics can be described as being a concept or principle that describes human behavior. The
meaning of ethic s is hard to define; people have their own thoughts about what ethics is about.
The word ethics often times is a link with law or religion. Both of these have more to do with
society standards than one s own behavior. Ethicsis based on grounded values of right and wrong
that advise what people should do. Moreover, you can relate ethics to fairness or specific virtues.
Ethics can also be designated as values that impose the rational responsibilities to refrain from
harming, stealing or killing. Ethics is the study of universal values that consist of equality, natural
rights, obedience with the concern of health and safety. Additionally, ethics is a study of one s own
standards with the development of one s own values and moral beliefs. Ethic s means unremitting

When we talk about health care ethics involving patients, it brings upon challenging principles in
the health arena. There are four main principles that define the ethical duties within healthcare they
are: autonomy, beneficence, non maleficence and justice. These principles are in effect at all times
within the care of the patient in any health care setting. (Health Care Ethics: Overview of the
Basics, 2011) The most important of those principles is non maleficence, which means do no
harm. It is the foundation of medical ethics and part of the physician oath. In all situations, a
provider should not cause any harm or put a patient in harm s way. The principle of non
maleficence entails the purpose of circumventing needless harm or injury that can happen through
acts of commission or omission. In simple language, it can be thought of as act of negligence if
you enact a careless or arbitrary risk of harm upon another. (Runzheimer Larsen,

New France Contributions To Canada
New France In the development of what is known today as Canada, during the Elizabethan era,
there was a series was highly documented and, surprisingly, not well known occurrences. The
colonization of New France set the foundation for Canada. The early settlers grew as a nation while
holding true to some teachings of the French. The French were originally on the search for an
alternative route for Asia and instead stumbled upon what was soon to become their greatest
achievement. The French set out to trade in Asia, but found ever growing success from the new land

For much of my life I have felt I have just been going through the motions, not living my life to

that condition. In a kind of quirky way, this film cries out for each of us to live the life we ve
always wanted. Get involved with those around us. Too often we become mired down in day to
day minutia, and by the time we shake ourselves awake, more years have passed than are still
left for us to live. When I saw this film was an option for this assignment, I was thrilled. I have

Empiricism Vs. Positivist Theory Of Knowledge
Epistemology is the branch of philosophy that evaluates the acquisition, limitations, and origins of
human knowledge. One of the theories found in epistemology is the theory of empiricism.
Empiricism is the belief that knowledge is gained through experience, that there is no such thing as
innate knowledge, or knowledge that one is born with. Empiricism stands in stark contrast to the
rationalist theory, the belief that humans possess innate knowledge, and that one can have
knowledge, without sensory information or experience, through reason. In this paper I will evaluate
the theory of empiricism, comparing it to rationalismand discussing advantages and disadvantages
of the empiricists perspective on the acquisition of knowledge, and then I will discuss why I
consider empiricism the superior theory of knowledge. One of the main critiques of the empiricist
theory is that it is derived strictly from sensory information. Any knowledge that we may possess is
strictly from the experiences we have had in our lifetime. This is a problem that rationalists have
with empiricism. Rene Descartes, mathematician and father of modern philosophy, argues that our
senses cannot be trusted, and that they are easily deceived (Epistemology, slides 26 28). Not unlike
Descartes, it is common for mathematicians to subscribe to the side of rationalism in regard to the
acquisition of knowledge. This is not surprising as most of mathematics involve concepts that are
known to be universally true

FDA Drug Approval Process
Tricia Garbuzovas
COM/172
October 5, 2011
Cassandra Baker
FDA Drug Approval Process Americans must wait up to 19 years after a discovered treatment
before they can participate in benefits of a new medication (Philipson Sun, 2008). The regulatory
process drug manufacturers need to endure before releasing potentially life saving medication is an
extremely expensive, time consuming process. The Center for Drug Evaluation and Research
(CDER) is the main department of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) responsible for the
safety of drugs (both prescription and over the counter) sold in the United States (Food and Drug
Administration, 2011). This department scrutinizes the testing of new drugs and ... Show more

Product liability laws allow drug users to sue the manufacture, not the FDA, for any adverse drug
reactions and side effects. While the FDA oversees drug safety, they do not ensure it. To avoid the
costs associated with lawsuits and the risk of a bad name, drug companies do their best to fully,
sometimes overly test products before release. When product liability law attempts to ensure safety
already assured by the FDA, prices may be inefficiently high due to liability costs that do not deter
manufacturers from producing unsafe products (Philipson Sun, 2008, p. 86).
Drug Approval Process The time frame and cost to release a drug for sale into the United States
market is enormous. After nearly 20 years and about one billion dollars spent, a drug manufacture
can begin to market its product to consumers (Philipson Sun, 2008). The reason behind these huge
numbers is the drug approval process mandated by the Food and Drug Administration.
Understanding the testing process will explain the long time frame and huge costs associated with
drug approval.
Stages of the Testing Process There are several phases and applications to complete for drug
development in the United States. The three basic stages in the testing process are preclinical,
clinical, and approval. The first step of preclinical usually lasts anywhere from one to six years.
During the preclinical phase, toxicology studies on the ingredients are collected and drug testing

The Civil Rights Movement And The Women s Rights Movement
Since the late 19th century, the efforts of protest and activism have been more focused on the
expansion of individual freedoms for minority groups and those who faced significant
discrimination rather than equality for all people. Individual freedom is the right of every citizen in
the United States and signifies that every person has a right to freely express themselves, move
about the country, and have assurance of the security of their private property, among other things.
The principal examples of this shift in focus to advancing individual freedoms are the Civil Rights
Movement and the Women s RightsMovement. Each of these movements was spurred by a group of
people taking a stand against being refused their human rights. African Americans were long
mistreated and discriminated against in the United States. They faced suffering of every kind, from
not being able to eat in certain restaurants or use certain bathrooms to being denied the same
educational rights and opportunities as white people. This latter point is especially evident in the
fact that only twenty percent of African Americanveterans returning home from war in 1945 and
1946 were given education funding. Such discrimination is undeniable and representative of a
broken society. The fact that eighty percent of black soldiers who survived the horrors of war were
treated so unfairly in their own home country illustrates the need for expansion of individual
freedoms for African Americans in the United

Shopping Malls Are Becoming Extinct
Ever wonder what your favorite mall will look like if it was replaced by an empty lot? How
would you feel? Approximately 60 years ago when shopping malls were first built, it was
expected to be the gleaming symbols of America s future. Shopping malls were created to lure
customers from the city into the suburbs; thus allowing shopping be done under one roof.
However, according to recent studies conducted by Green Street Advisors, 10 percent of the
nation s 1,000 enclosed malls will fail by 2022. Although this may not seem detrimental, once
the malls begin to disappear, shoppers will be limited to where they shop. Shopping malls are
becoming extinct because of change in generation, economic issues, and the closing of major
anchor stores. As we enter a new generation, shoppers are gearing toward online and mobile
shopping, which contributes to the extinction of shopping malls. America reached a time period
where the number of adults who were born in a time where online shopping was not thought of
are retiring; resulting in old habits, such as shopping in malls, coming to a cease. The older
generation of adults tend to revert back to familiar habits such as shopping at malls or going to a
bookstore. The new generation of adults/teenagers do not use shopping malls as a hangout spot in
contrast to older generation, thus leading to the decline of shopping malls. Other than shopping,
shopping malls were once used for socializing. However, with the increase of social networks

Learning to eat healthier can lower the risk of suffering many of the existing diseases. Making
healthier choices will not only benefit the person physically, the change will possibly boost their

There are small and easy steps that can be done to improve one s health. If one drinks alcohol than
the first step to a better life is by eliminating that drink from the daily diet. Nutrition is more
important than what every person thinks. Improper nutrition can cause not only depression but also

`` Nature `` By Ralph Waldo Emerson
Nature is an essay written by Ralph Waldo Emerson, and published by James Munroe and Company
in 1836. [1] Nature has a total of 41 pages. The essay consists of eight parts: Nature, Commodity,
Beauty, Language, Discipline, Idealism, Spirit and Prospects. Each part takes a different
perspective on the relationship between humans and nature. In this essay, Emerson emphasizes the
foundation of transcendentalism, a religious and philosophical movement that developed during the
late 1820s and 30s in the Eastern region of the United States as protest against the general state of
spirituality and, in particular, the state of intellectualism. [2] Transcendentalism suggests that the
divine, or God, suffuses nature, and suggests that reality can be understood by studying nature. [3]
Transcendentalism is closely related to Unitarianism, the dominant religious movement in Boston at
the early nineteenth century. Transcendentalism evolved as an organic consequence of the
Unitarian emphasis on free conscience and the value of intellectual reason. [4] Emerson divides
nature into four stages: commodity, beauty, language, and discipline. These define the ways by
which humans use nature for their basic needs. The historical significance of Nature was that
transcendentalism club led the celebration of the American experiment as one of the individualism
and self reliance. [5]
Emerson s purpose in the essay Nature is to lay out and attempt to solve an abstract problem: that

were treated as though they didn t exist. After witnessing a cockfight and running away just like
the Balinese people who also attended, however, Geertz and his wife were treated as though they
were Balinese themselves, and were completely accepted into Balinese society. In the second
section, Of Cocks and Men , Geertz reflects on different aspects of Balinese culture and how
Balinese men, despite cockfighting being illegal, strongly identify with it and even use the term to
refer to different types of men and their personalities. Additionally, Geertz points out that besides
cockfighting, the Balinese are strongly against doing anything that resembles an animal,

The Track And The Multi Track
System (P1)
The Tracks:
There are three tracks in the civil court system, the small claims track, the fast track and the
multi track. These three tracks were formed under the Civil Procedure Act 1997 to make it easier
to deal with cases of different complexity. The Act has put in place a series of checks to sort the
cases according to size of case, the complexity of the case and the size of the compensation asked
for. This is achieved through a questionnaire completed by the parties.
Small Claim courts:
Cases in the small claims court are heard by District judges in a county court, the court will hear
contract and tort cases up to ВЈ10,000 and personal injury claims up to ВЈ1000. The hearing is
informal and the courts discourage people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The court will set a strict timetable in order to stop time wasting and to keep costs low. Once the
case is set for a hearing, it will be heard within thirty weeks. Fixed costs will be allowed and the
hearing will be one day long.
Only one expert can be used, for example, in a case involving mechanical problems between the
manufacturer and the dealer, an engineer may be used in order to give advice on the technicality at
hand. The judge decide how much the losing party has to pay in legal fees to the winner, to decide
this both parties have to hand in a form stating how much money they have spent in legal fees in
order for the judge to decide.
Multi Track Claims:
Cases on the fast track are heard by a Circuit judge in a County court, the court will hear cases over
ВЈ25,000 (therefore it has no limit) or cases with a complex point. Cases on this track can be sent
to the High Court (Queens Bench Division, Family Division, or Chancery Division) if it contains
complex points of law. The judge will case manage therefore setting a strict timetable for matters
such as document disclosures.
The use of ADR, such as arbitration, will be encouraged in order to avoid having to go to court
and therefore keep costs low.

The civil courts will deal with issues between two parties with the claimant asking the liable party

Additional Research Report
The Future of Fiber Optics
I. What is Fiber Optics? Fiber optic technology is often discussed in a wide range of
conversations. This may be when people talk about TVs, phones, internet, or general technology.
Fiber optics may also be referred to when talking about light and optics. An optical fiber is defined
as a flexible, transparent fiber made by drawing glass (silica) or plastic to a diameter slightly
thicker than that of human hair (Wikipedia). These fibers are used as a means of light
transmission from one end of the fiber to the other end of the fiber and this is referred to as fiber
optic communications. These fibers are quite technologically advanced because they have the
ability to transmit more data and at a quicker rate than normal cables made of wire. There is also
much less lost data when using fiber optic technology. Clearly, the benefits of fiber optics are
much greater than traditional wired cables. Fiber optic cables are also used for the purpose of
lighting and sensing. There are already many practical applications of the technology such as lasers,
but these applications are just the beginning of the potential of this powerful technology.
II. How was Fiber Optics Discovered? Fiber optics as we know it today has been the result of a
long chain of inventions that all began with John Tyndall s 1854 discover that light can be
conducted through water and bent. Later in 1895, a

democracy. ThisS is the view(s) commonly held among the general public. These are sets of attitude

The first stage is the Pre Problem age. This occurs when some highly undesirable social
condition exists but has not captured much public attention even though some groups might be
aware of it. Traits arising from this stage are that the interest groups declare a problem. The
second stage is the alarmed discovery and euphoric enthusiasm. Here, the public suddenly
becomes both aware of and alarmed about the evils of a particular problem. The discovery is
accompanied by the society s ability to solve the problem or do something effective within a
short span of time. Traits arising from this issue is that public experience negative consequences
of unhealthy environment e.g. Flooding. The third stage is Realizing the cost of significant
progress. It consists of gradually spreading realization that the cost of solving the problem is very
high indeed. Engaging in this will not only take a lot of money but also requires major sacrifices
by large groups in the population. A major trait at this stage is that it has high cost clause and
involves many sacrifices. The fourth stage is the gradual decline of intense public interest. The

Conformity In Emerson s Self-Reliance
In the dictionary, conformity is defined as compliance with standards, rules, or laws. . The reason
I believe that conformity is a common element in both Emerson s Self Reliance and Gladwell s
Outliers is because in Self Reliance, Emerson believed that to be self reliant, you must avoid
conformity. Gladwell agrees with this in chapter 8 of Outliers, where he states that we tend to
conform to rules based off of where we are from and how we were raised. This chapter was a
perfect example because of how all those children were raised. As stated previously, a big key
factor in Self Reliance was the concept that Emerson truly didn t want others to follow
conformity. He wanted people to remain true to themselves due to the fact that it follows along
with the essence of the Universal Spirit. To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true
for you in your private heart is true for all men, that is genius (Emerson, 19). After Emerson
discusses conformity, he delves into the discussion of innocence and infants. He discusses this as
a nod to nonconformity. Infancy conforms to nobody: all conform to it, so that the babe
commonly makes four or five out of the adults who prattle and play to it (Emerson, 20). In a whole,
Emerson s Self Reliance was more or less

Essay On Mahatma Gandhi
Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in the small western Indian state of Porbandar under the
name Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi ( Ghandi s Life ) . When Gandhi was finished with high
school, he entered a small Indian college, the Samaldas College at the University of Bombay (
Mahatma ). After beginning his education here, however, he decided he disliked and traveled to
the University College London, leaving his wife and infant son ( Ghandi s Life ). It was while
attending school in London that he initially became exposed to the diversity of the world; he
pursued the study of religions such as Hinduism, Christianity, and Buddhism ( Mahatma ). After
being admitted to the English Bar, Gandhi returned to India. He, however, had a difficult time...

By 1921, he was the leader of the Indian National Congress and was responsible for reorganizing
the party s constitution around the concept of Swaraj, political independence from the British (
Mahatma ). He also led a boycott of all British goods and institutions ( Mahatma ). On March
10th, 1922 Gandhi was arrested and served 2 years of a 6 year prison sentence for sedition (
Mahatma ). While Gandhi was serving his time in jail, the Indian National Congress lost its
publicity and momentum ( Mahatma ). In fact it did not return to the public eye until 1928 when
it campaigned for Britain to grant India dominion status, which gave a state the ability to self
govern its people, while still remaining under control of the British monarchy (Alcock). In 1930,
Britain introduced a tax on salt and Gandhi responded by leading a 250 mile march to the sea in
order to collect his own salt ( Mahatma ). Because of Gandhi s social prominence, the government
reluctantly negotiated issues with Gandhi, which led to alleviating poverty, empowering women,
and eventually giving India political independence from Britain ( Mahatma ). Hitler was born in
Braunau am Inn, Austria, on April 20, 1889, son of an Austrian customs official and a young

Leadership Reflective Essay
The three most important things that I have learned are based on the foundation of systems theory.
Communities are made of a giant system and immeasurable subsystems acting and reacting with
one another. When the various systems become unstable, resulting needs arise. Often, there are so
many contributions to an issue; one has a great deal of difficulty understanding the source of the
problem. Rather, the primary importance is accepting the relationships between individuals and
environments. Communities must recognize that those within the system are responsible for taking
the steps to provide stability for existence and intervening to strengthen existing structures (Homan,
2011). The most successful social undertakings involve... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another significant subject is deciding what issues demand urgent engagement. It is very easy
to be distracted by other problems within the larger concern. Focus is crucial to progress and
success. Chapter 11 provides many suggestions on ways in Selecting issues for action (Homan,
2011, p. 335). The text also stresses the development of leadership as an essential component of
organizational development. Homan (2011) explains that Leadership provides a sense of
confidence to members of an organization or group (p. 346). This content is something that I had
not fully conceptualized in the past, but in evaluating previous experiences with leadership, I can
now see a trend in the high value of positive leadership roles. This is an area that I will definitely
carry new knowledge and consideration in future endeavors. The course content referring to the
strategies of confrontation, negotiation, collaboration, and advocacy is beneficial and interesting.
In particular, confrontation is an approach of which I personally avoid as much as possible, so the
outline, guidelines, and strategies contained in the text are great empowerment tools. After learning
more about the confrontation tool, I was able to identify its use as being relatively successful
concerning local events. Specifically, there was a lot of speculation and outrage involving the
Department of Children and Family Services regarding the death of Emani Moss, the 10 year

Comparing What s Eating Gilbert Grape, And Shawshank Red
The three movies What s Eating Gilbert Grape, Of Mice and Men, and Shawshank Redemption
all have separate themes and ideas that revolve around particular characters. However, one clear
intention that all of the following movies are trying to send across, is to be generally a better
person. Gilberts mom, Lennie, and Brooks are all characters that struggle in some way and also
all end dejectedly bad. These problems that the characters face could have all been resolved in a
solemn manner if people did not judge others by their appearance but by their morals, if people
were there for each other even if they re frustrated by them, finally if they did not jump to rash
decisions and not give up. To start with, society has been rather harsh on those who are obese ,
whether that be magazines ,tv shows and so on. For example In the movie What s Eating Gilbert

The Profession Of Social Work
When defining social work, the phrase a helping profession is used quite frequently. The
profession is often misconstrued with promoting the distribution of welfare. Often times, this
stereotype amuses me because social work is remarkably so much more. Not only do people fail
to realize that social work is one of the broadest occupations that offers various work environments,
but also they neglect one of the key goals besides the act of helping: empowerment. Yes, the
profession of social workstrives to provide the needy with physical resources to better improve
their lives through numerous institutional and residual programs, yet the most valuable assets a
worker can offer are abstract. Social workers are also supposed to educate people by giving them
the skills to sustain themselves in society long after they have received their services. By
empowering and teaching, social workers uplift and provide opportunity to those who are striving
for more.
Whether we know it or not, we all have an engrained sense to help others. For some, it fades as
we grow older, and for others, it only grows stronger. I ve always loved lending a helping hand; I
d like to think I get the trait from my mother. Growing up as a young child, I knew I wanted to
help people and give back when I became an adult. The occupation that would aid in completing my
commendable task changed quite frequently. At one point or another I dreamt of becoming a
teacher, interior decorator, paralegal, and then

Gay Discrimination In The Media
Even in the recent public opinion toward homosexuals and same sex marriage with approval and
approval, in the past 40 or 50 years, news media has generally held that homosexuality is a social
issue that will weaken the combat effectiveness of the U.S. military and affect the security of the
U.S. government. In 1980s or 1990s, after public discussion of human rights through the
organization, the media focus on the question that same sex marriage on the children grow and
the past he concept of a happy family. According to the Chomsky and Barclay s study, the
orientation of public opinion toward homosexuals will be subjectively influenced by journalists or
media holders, but this effect is basically neutral. However, the point in Davidson s (1991) research
is more passive. Anti gay prejudice in the media occurs not just as vicious as slander, but also as
casual bias, perpetuation of negative stereotypes, deference to the prejudice of others, and lesbian
and gay invisibility. Because everyone has their own standards of whether or not the content of
homophobia can be accepted.According to Davidson s point of view, the opposition to homophobia
is much weaker than racial discrimination anti Semitic, or sexist content, which may mean that the
issue of homophobia has not been properly valued. About framing gay issues in the news
media,LGBT coverage need a system to research on same sexual marriage, even some expert

Flat Management And Transparency Worked For Them Essay
This post is inpsired by a post I found recently on inc.com
I found this title to be very intriguing. So much so that I decided to do some research as to why Flat
management and transparency worked for them.
So Here is why!
Introduction
Flat management is an organizational structure which eliminates intermediate executive levels and
their functions. In this, the top most level of management is in directly intertwined with frontline
customers, employees on the floor and salespeople. Undeterred by their breath, flat management
can be benefited from various advantages for the customer like faster response times and also other
customer preferences.
From increased productivity to faster decision making, here are 5 compelling reasons as to why flat
or horizontal management could work for your company.
1. Focus on core Products:
With a flat management system there is more time to listen to your customers and their reviews on
the products. Thus giving you the feedback you need to refine your the product. With a Flat
structure you don t have to deal with the nitty gritties of Human Resources or any issues related to
it. Departmental meetings are also not required. Staff meetings, however, should be conducted at
least once every week so that you can have a clear status about the state of the business. In this
meeting you get a good opportunity to discuss on ideas and techniques offering customer service
suggestions, content, new product features etc.
It has been found that flat

  • 2. Infertility Treatments Are Necessary in Today s Society Essay Infertility Treatments: Is it Ethical? In recent years, several factors have altered the definition of a family. We live in a time where careers, education, and work are now put before starting a family, making it more difficult to have children. The traditional family archetype has changed with a rise in single and homosexual parenting. This change, even though it is a positive one, can result in several people being unable to bear children. Infertility treatments have become a popular choice for these people who cannot have children. These treatments have become popular in books, movies, and other forms, which has brought attention to the ethics of the practices. The ethics of these treatments are challenged by the health risks on people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Those who are infertile may feel distressed that they are not able to become a parent, especially if it is one of their life goals. Infertility treatments are vital in giving infertile people the chance to fulfill their lives with a family. Infertility treatments need to be available simply for the reason that they are helpful for people whose health conditions inhibit them from producing a child of their own. According to the CDC, 6% of married women are infertile and 11% of women have troubles getting pregnant. (CDC). They are also beneficial to single women and men facing infertility issues. People that are infertile may have problems with reproductive organs, hormonal glands, or genetic disorders that impede on these couples ability to get pregnant. Infertility can be difficult to those trying to get pregnant. Research has shown that infertility has negative emotional and psychological effects on a person facing infertility. People dealing with infertility often feel depressed, distressed, as if they were grieving a loss. • 3. Abortion And Abortion Abortion is a serious ethical dilemma. The practice is not a recent one, there being evidence of the procedure dating back several millennia and neither is the controversy that comes with it, with records of laws regulating abortion appearing in texts and manuscripts from a range of civilizations throughout the years. There has been much debate over whether abortion is a morally sound practice, and the divisive nature of the issue has resulted in centuries of contention. Many notable figures and organizations have made use of numerous religious, legal, and ethical standpoints to develop positions for and against abortion. This essay will be taking a look at abortion through the lens of two normative ethical theories: Utilitarianismand Deontology, as understood through John Stuart Mill s Utilitarianism and Immanuel Kants Groundwork of the Metaphysic of Morals respectively. Utilitarianism is an ethical theory that claims that the best action one can perform is the one that brings about the most pleasure, happiness or utility. Utilitarianism is extremely consequentialist in nature, focusing solely on the results of one s actions and not on intentions or other notions of ideas such as justice or humanity. There are two main branches of utilitarianism: act utilitarianism and rule utilitarianism. Act utilitarianism essentially states that whether an action is right or wrong depends on its particular consequences. Rule utilitarianism states that whether an action is right or wrong depends in part on similar actions, and how those actions promote pleasure /happiness. Rule utilitarianism came about as a response to criticisms of act utilitarianism, which claimed act utilitarianism was not feasible as an ethical theory in that it would be impossible to make decisions that actually promote the greatest utility in every instance one is required to act. Rule utilitarians believe that instead of making an individual judgement and decision based on anticipated utility when faced with a situation, it would be better to establish general rules to follow that, when followed, typically reap the greatest utility. Both rule utilitarianism and act utilitarianism would presumably have different takes on whether abortion is a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Henry Thoreau Essay Born in 1817, in Concord, Henry David Thoreau became one of the greatest writers among the American Renaissance. Thoreau based his whole philosophy on the fact that man needed to get rid of material things in order to be an individual. An exquisitely educated man, Thoreau went to Harvard, which placed heavy emphasis on the classics. Thoreaustudied a curriculum that included grammar and composition, mathematics, English, history, and various philosophies. He also spoke fluently in Italian, French, German, and Spanish. After his graduation in 1837, Thoreau became a teacher. He and his brother John, however, closed the school in 1841, for Thoreau knew writing was his passion. Thoreau s love for nature was one of the most powerful aspects evident in Walden. Considered by some to be the father of the environmental movement, Thoreau referred back to nature in everything he wrote from essays to political speeches. As a simple man, Thoreau did not own many material things. For he believed that to own material objects were an obstacle, rather than an advantage. He saw that most people measured self worth in terms of what they owned, rather than their spiritual and intellectual gifts. Thoreau proposed to live as simply as possible and determine what he needed for basic human survival. quot;My greatest skill is to want but little. quot; He grew his own food, cleaned his own cabin, and often arranged his affairs so he had to work as little as possible. Published on August 9, 1854, Walden sold two thousand copies. For one dollar, people read into the depths of Thoreau s life at Walden Pond and all his views on everything from the anti slavery movement to his environmental ideas. Walden sold moderately well during Thoreau s lifetime, but his greatest respects came posthumously.Through the reading of Walden, many people have discovered the magic of Henry David Thoreau s pen. Pushing Social Change And Toppling The Patriarchy Essay Pushing Social Change and Toppling the Patriarchy Television remains an important medium in exposing the viewing public to marginalized ideas, life styles, and varied ways of thinking. Unlike a film, which usually takes place over a self contained two hour period, television offers more screen time over the arch of seasons to explore characters and themes in deeply meaningful and personal ways. Aided by its structure and format, television programs are able to touch people, helping to change how we all view the world. Jill Soloway, comedian, writer and director, and pioneering television icon, created Transparent to make the world a safer place for transgenders and other minorities. As Jill Soloway said at the 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards, she wants to topple the patriarchy and make transgenders and members of the LGBTQ community heroes (Huffington Post, 2016). Therefore, through examining the themes of gender identity and religion, both themes presented in the film and in class, Transparent comments on society s current state and proposes meaningful change. As Transparent begins, the opening credits offer a glimpse into the ideas of gender. From the lighting of a candle, symbolizing light into the darkness of life, to a shimmering blue dress worn by a female impersonator the opening credits reveal the process of becoming a transgender. Transitioning from a male to a female, or vice versa, is a feat that only a few undertake. However, in the show Transparent, Mort Pfefferman transitions into Maura Pfefferman, a masculine figure who blossoms in femininity and bravery. While it is already a difficult task to come out as transgender, it is made even more difficult in this case because Maura has to deal with many family dramas revolving around her self absorbed children. Throughout the first season of Transparent, gender identity is explored and seen through the challenges that the characters face. For ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Comparision of the tragic characters in Othello and King... The Greek philosopher Aristotle set forth the guidelines for a tragedy in his work Poetics. According to Aristotle, the tragic character in a tragedy is a person, not all good or bad, who begins in a rank of high degree and importance and then experiences a downfall due to a tragic flaw. In the end of most tragedies, the character comes to a realization of his flaw after enduring a great deal of suffering. William Shakespeare, an English playwright of the 17th century, composed many tragedies, including King Lear and Othello, which exemplified the characteristics of a tragic herooutlined by Aristotle. The main characters in King Lear and Othello share many of the traits essential to tragic characters, yet they differ in their specific... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The pride held by Othello and Lear leads to further pride in others. They gain a sense that others would have no reason to do them harm which leads them both to deceit and poor judgment. Because Othello thinks highly of himself, he believes others will do the same; his open and trusting nature allows Iago to take advantage of him. Othello is constantly referring to Iago as Honest Iago and entrusting him with important duties, such as attending to his wife when he leaves for Cyprus. Iago scoffs at Othello s trust in him and shows intention of deceit: The Moor is of a free and open nature, That thinks men honest that but seem to be so, And will as tenderly be led by the nose As asses are. (Othello, I.iii.442 445) Iago insults Othello by comparing him to a submissive donkey, and he displays an intent of deceiving Othello in this simile. Lear s pride, like Othello s, causes him to trust others who plan on deceiving him. Two of his daughters, Goneril and Regan, gain Lear s trust through their flattering formalistic love speeches by playing into his pride and boosting his self image. Lear is unsuspecting of the daughters plot against him, and the two go on to take advantage of their father s poor judgment. Lear trustingly divides his kingdom between them, giving up his power and entrusting his well being into the hands of these malicious characters. Goneril ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Leaders should lead the believers based on how Christ related with the church when he was on earth[5]. Shepherds had to feed the people of God and to protect them from predators[6]. Churches today ought to do things how the New Testament churches did[7]. The New Testament leaders are an example of how church leaders of today should also behave and work[8]. They ought to be able to teach, guide the believers in the way of God and nurture their spiritual gifts. The New Testament leaders had to boldly defend the word of God in case of any false teaching. Basing on this New Testament leadership, it is important to make sure that any believer appointed to the leadership office has the laid down qualifications[9]. Two of the novel s main characters ,Johnny and Dally, are noticeably different from their friends, because us ,the readers, see a change in their personalities. The change in their personalities causes them to make a statement that Johnny is the hero and Dally is the hoodlum. Aesthetics are the philosophy of taste and beauty and vary from person to person. These determine the varying realities and truths for an individual. The abilities of a person to identify beauty in things differ from another and this is why truth also varies among people as it depends upon the notions and conceptions expressed in terms of assertions. What is Cartesian Aesthetics and how did/does it affect design? Use specific examples and explore how the concept of aesthetics is linked to that of truth. One was the reality of the senses. This is pertinent to the fact that reality of the physical world includes all that is present in the society, whereas, the second reality is of the mind. The thoughts and beliefs of an individual form a second reality and it is universal and unchanging. In the second reality, conceptions of truth, ethics and justice come into play. Hence, the mind decides the truth of all things by its thoughts and beliefs and no truth is more universal than that. Truth varies from people to people. This is eminent in the photographs of any photographer. People see what they want to see in them and various people can see various things in a single photograph depending on their thoughts. • 13. Analysis Of Bellezza And The Non-Verbal Realm In Social... Bellezza and the Non Verbal Realm in Social Interaction Social interactions influence our relationships and how people view one another. An interaction can be verbal or non verbal, but still can connect or separate two people. Three articles discuss different forms of social interactions and how they affect varied types of relationships. Wicklund, and Vida Grim (2004) describe the role of bellezza in interpersonal relationships. Bellezza is known as the objects that are pleasing to the senses. These objects refer to the visual, acoustical, olfactory and tactile aspects of people. Bellezza differs between each person, but generally follows a few prerequisites, including the absence of pressing drives, cultural understanding, and input from sensory dimensions. The absence of pressing drives includes an open mind free of anxiety, fear, and other strong drives, while cultural understanding refers to the education needed to understand there are different customs for each culture. Lastly, although the input of several sensory dimensions is ideal for bellezza, it is not necessary to need all sensory dimensions at the same time. Finally, bellezza can be broken down into short term and long term preparations. It is necessary to have short term contact such as eye contact, an appropriate distance apart, and good posture to be open to creating bellezza for another person. In order to maintain bellezza in the long term, an individual must first develop a solidarity of esthetic impressions, then agree to meet again in the future. Bertacco and Deponte (2005) analyzed the communicative experience by comparing letter writing to emails. Through two experiments, students were asked to write either a letter or email to a long lost friend. It was hypothesized that participants who wrote an email would be more concise in their writing, with less references to shared knowledge at the implicit and explicit level in experiment 1. Thus, perspective taking was measured by the number of a participant s references to memories with their long lost friend. This was recorded after the letter was finished, where participants were asked to record as many memories as they could in two minutes. Results from experiment one show that email ... Consequently according to Li, Jinyan(2003) while e commerce might not introduce any new problems, it is apparent that any problem already associated with an inability to synchronize or inter relate a variety of disparate taxing systems became exacerbated by a model that facilitates the very types of transactions that result in such problems in the first instance. A fundamental change in existing tax rules does not appear to be requisite. However internet and e commerce has increased the need for efficient and equitable tax treatments of firms operating in multiple tax jurisdictions. Current procedure used by most countries to allocate the tax base between jurisdictions and to avoid double taxation through a network of more than 1,500 bilateral double taxation treaties, is not only cumbersome, but will also come under increasing pressure as the scope and volume of cross border activities expand sharply. This is because the double taxation treaties are based on the assumption of national sovereignty in tax policy, which will become less relevant as globalization progresses. (Butler 77) The books Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler are both science fiction novels warning of a dangerous potential future. Frankenstein looks at the dangers of creating artificially intelligent beings, while Parable of the Sower explores humansavagery in the collapse of American civilization as the result of poor political decisions. Each addresses concerns of the time they were published. While both are pessimistic views of the future and both require the suspension of disbelief, the concept of dystopia and utopia is definitely apparent in both novels. A dystopia being a world in which nothing is perfect and a utopia being a perfect world. Frankensteinaddresses a timeless issue that modern science may soon make a reality, while Parable of the Sower creates an alarming depiction of conservative leadership. Frankenstein is an early depiction of the creation of artificial intelligence, an idea with great significance today. While artificially intelligent beings such as golems exist in myth as the product of magic, scientific progress has the true potential to make such beings. In John Patrick Shanley s Doubt; a parable, he eclipses the truth very well. Father Flynn makes the suggestion maybe just for some bonding time with the children, and to be more appealing to them and their parents. Father Flynn Says to Sister Aloysuis We should be friendlier. The children and the parents should see us as members of their family rather than emissaries from Rome. But we are not members of their family. We are different. Father Flynn may have suggested the trip for a chance to be alone with the boys where no one would see them if he planned on doing incongruous things with them. Since the trip was only a offer, and Sister Aloysuis would never allow it, Shanley shows Father Flynn s concept, but never uncovers his real intentions with the kids on this camping trip. • 18. Examples Of Irrationality In Macbeth Out, damned spot! out, I say! This is one of many quotes that represents the constant war between irrationality and reason in Macbeth (Shakespeare 76). When discussing Macbeth, a highly influential play written by William Shakespeare, it is important to keep in mind what exactly rules over Macbeththroughout the story. Does evil truly overcome the last of Macbeth s shreds of sanity? Is Macbeth a story of acceptance or heinous crimes committed? These questions feel intangible when first reading Shakespeare s masterpiece, but they can be answered through careful inspection and thorough research of the playwright s meanings behind each stanza. In the battle of reason vs. irrationality, irrationality takes over Macbeth s life more than reason, and this is exhibited in numerous forms. One of these forms stems from the dagger s appearance during Act II.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... No reason was found in Macbeth s hallucination of the dagger. The fact that Macbeth is even envisioning a dagger in which he would use to kill Duncan is irrational. Many would argue that the dagger is a painting of his guilty conscience, but as he continues to commit more heinous tyranny in Macbeth, Macbeth sees the dagger once more. It is important to note that later in the play, Lady Macbeth scolds Macbeth, This is the very painting of your fear;/ This is the air drawn dagger which, you said,/ Led you to Duncan (Shakespeare 52). The vision of the dagger controls Macbeth s life before and after King Duncan s death. • 25. Empiricism Vs. Positivist Theory Of Knowledge Epistemology is the branch of philosophy that evaluates the acquisition, limitations, and origins of human knowledge. One of the theories found in epistemology is the theory of empiricism. Empiricism is the belief that knowledge is gained through experience, that there is no such thing as innate knowledge, or knowledge that one is born with. Empiricism stands in stark contrast to the rationalist theory, the belief that humans possess innate knowledge, and that one can have knowledge, without sensory information or experience, through reason. In this paper I will evaluate the theory of empiricism, comparing it to rationalismand discussing advantages and disadvantages of the empiricists perspective on the acquisition of knowledge, and then I will discuss why I consider empiricism the superior theory of knowledge. One of the main critiques of the empiricist theory is that it is derived strictly from sensory information. Any knowledge that we may possess is strictly from the experiences we have had in our lifetime. This is a problem that rationalists have with empiricism. Rene Descartes, mathematician and father of modern philosophy, argues that our senses cannot be trusted, and that they are easily deceived (Epistemology, slides 26 28). Not unlike Descartes, it is common for mathematicians to subscribe to the side of rationalism in regard to the acquisition of knowledge. The regulatory process drug manufacturers need to endure before releasing potentially life saving medication is an extremely expensive, time consuming process. The Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) is the main department of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) responsible for the safety of drugs (both prescription and over the counter) sold in the United States (Food and Drug Administration, 2011). Product liability laws allow drug users to sue the manufacture, not the FDA, for any adverse drug reactions and side effects. While the FDA oversees drug safety, they do not ensure it. To avoid the costs associated with lawsuits and the risk of a bad name, drug companies do their best to fully, sometimes overly test products before release. When product liability law attempts to ensure safety already assured by the FDA, prices may be inefficiently high due to liability costs that do not deter manufacturers from producing unsafe products (Philipson Sun, 2008, p. 86). Drug Approval Process The time frame and cost to release a drug for sale into the United States market is enormous. After nearly 20 years and about one billion dollars spent, a drug manufacture can begin to market its product to consumers (Philipson Sun, 2008). The reason behind these huge numbers is the drug approval process mandated by the Food and Drug Administration. Understanding the testing process will explain the long time frame and huge costs associated with drug approval. Stages of the Testing Process There are several phases and applications to complete for drug development in the United States. The three basic stages in the testing process are preclinical, clinical, and approval. The first step of preclinical usually lasts anywhere from one to six years. The Civil Rights Movement And The Women s Rights Movement Since the late 19th century, the efforts of protest and activism have been more focused on the expansion of individual freedoms for minority groups and those who faced significant discrimination rather than equality for all people. Individual freedom is the right of every citizen in the United States and signifies that every person has a right to freely express themselves, move about the country, and have assurance of the security of their private property, among other things. The principal examples of this shift in focus to advancing individual freedoms are the Civil Rights Movement and the Women s RightsMovement. Each of these movements was spurred by a group of people taking a stand against being refused their human rights. African Americans were long mistreated and discriminated against in the United States. They faced suffering of every kind, from not being able to eat in certain restaurants or use certain bathrooms to being denied the same educational rights and opportunities as white people. This latter point is especially evident in the fact that only twenty percent of African Americanveterans returning home from war in 1945 and 1946 were given education funding. Approximately 60 years ago when shopping malls were first built, it was expected to be the gleaming symbols of America s future. Shopping malls were created to lure customers from the city into the suburbs; thus allowing shopping be done under one roof. However, according to recent studies conducted by Green Street Advisors, 10 percent of the nation s 1,000 enclosed malls will fail by 2022. Although this may not seem detrimental, once the malls begin to disappear, shoppers will be limited to where they shop. Shopping malls are becoming extinct because of change in generation, economic issues, and the closing of major anchor stores. As we enter a new generation, shoppers are gearing toward online and mobile shopping, which contributes to the extinction of shopping malls. America reached a time period where the number of adults who were born in a time where online shopping was not thought of are retiring; resulting in old habits, such as shopping in malls, coming to a cease. The older generation of adults tend to revert back to familiar habits such as shopping at malls or going to a bookstore. • 37. `` Nature `` By Ralph Waldo Emerson Nature is an essay written by Ralph Waldo Emerson, and published by James Munroe and Company in 1836. [1] Nature has a total of 41 pages. The essay consists of eight parts: Nature, Commodity, Beauty, Language, Discipline, Idealism, Spirit and Prospects. Each part takes a different perspective on the relationship between humans and nature. In this essay, Emerson emphasizes the foundation of transcendentalism, a religious and philosophical movement that developed during the late 1820s and 30s in the Eastern region of the United States as protest against the general state of spirituality and, in particular, the state of intellectualism. [2] Transcendentalism suggests that the divine, or God, suffuses nature, and suggests that reality can be understood by studying nature. [3] Transcendentalism is closely related to Unitarianism, the dominant religious movement in Boston at the early nineteenth century. Transcendentalism evolved as an organic consequence of the Unitarian emphasis on free conscience and the value of intellectual reason. [4] Emerson divides nature into four stages: commodity, beauty, language, and discipline. These define the ways by which humans use nature for their basic needs. The historical significance of Nature was that transcendentalism club led the celebration of the American experiment as one of the individualism and self reliance. [5] Emerson s purpose in the essay Nature is to lay out and attempt to solve an abstract problem: that humans do ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 40. The Future Of Fiber Optics James Gourley PHS 208 Barrett Honors Contract Additional Research Report The Future of Fiber Optics I. What is Fiber Optics? Fiber optic technology is often discussed in a wide range of conversations. This may be when people talk about TVs, phones, internet, or general technology. Fiber optics may also be referred to when talking about light and optics. An optical fiber is defined as a flexible, transparent fiber made by drawing glass (silica) or plastic to a diameter slightly thicker than that of human hair (Wikipedia). These fibers are used as a means of light transmission from one end of the fiber to the other end of the fiber and this is referred to as fiber optic communications. These fibers are quite technologically advanced because they have the ability to transmit more data and at a quicker rate than normal cables made of wire. There is also much less lost data when using fiber optic technology. Clearly, the benefits of fiber optics are much greater than traditional wired cables. Fiber optic cables are also used for the purpose of lighting and sensing. There are already many practical applications of the technology such as lasers, but these applications are just the beginning of the potential of this powerful technology. II. How was Fiber Optics Discovered? Fiber optics as we know it today has been the result of a long chain of inventions that all began with John Tyndall s 1854 discover that light can be conducted through water and bent. • 43. Conformity In Emerson s Self-Reliance In the dictionary, conformity is defined as compliance with standards, rules, or laws. . The reason I believe that conformity is a common element in both Emerson s Self Reliance and Gladwell s Outliers is because in Self Reliance, Emerson believed that to be self reliant, you must avoid conformity. Gladwell agrees with this in chapter 8 of Outliers, where he states that we tend to conform to rules based off of where we are from and how we were raised. This chapter was a perfect example because of how all those children were raised. As stated previously, a big key factor in Self Reliance was the concept that Emerson truly didn t want others to follow conformity. He wanted people to remain true to themselves due to the fact that it follows along with the essence of the Universal Spirit. To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men, that is genius (Emerson, 19). After Emerson discusses conformity, he delves into the discussion of innocence and infants. He discusses this as a nod to nonconformity. Infancy conforms to nobody: all conform to it, so that the babe commonly makes four or five out of the adults who prattle and play to it (Emerson, 20). In a whole, Emerson s Self Reliance was more or less ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Communities are made of a giant system and immeasurable subsystems acting and reacting with one another. When the various systems become unstable, resulting needs arise. Often, there are so many contributions to an issue; one has a great deal of difficulty understanding the source of the problem. Rather, the primary importance is accepting the relationships between individuals and environments. The profession is often misconstrued with promoting the distribution of welfare. Often times, this stereotype amuses me because social work is remarkably so much more. Not only do people fail to realize that social work is one of the broadest occupations that offers various work environments, but also they neglect one of the key goals besides the act of helping: empowerment. Yes, the profession of social workstrives to provide the needy with physical resources to better improve their lives through numerous institutional and residual programs, yet the most valuable assets a worker can offer are abstract.
