On September 9th I attended my first SWIC Music Faculty Preview Recital at the
Schmidt Art Center. The venue for the afternoon recital was held in the gallery
room, a room set up for an audience of about 50 music majors. In the front of the hall
sat a white grand piano on parquet floors; the walls of the room were adorned with
art of varying mediums. Having mucked around on the piano as a child, I sat
enthusiastically as a musical amateur in great awe of anyone with talent of the
keyboard or gift of music of any kind.
The first two pieces in the program were by Austrian composer Franz Schubert 1797
1828. In 1808, through a competitive examination, the eleven year old Schubert
was accepted into the choir of the Imperial Court Chapel as well as the Royal
Seminary. He was a shy youth, and spent most of his spare time practicing and
composing alone. When Shubert was fifteen his voice changed and he left the choir
but continued to study at the seminary. As discussed in lecture, each period of
music has a chain reaction between artists who are affected by the events of their

about a friendly zookeeper, who always goes to the zoo, on the number five bus
every day to make time for his friends, which are the elephant, the tortoise, the
penguin, the rhinoceros, and the owl. He plays chess with the elephant, runs races
with the tortoise, sits with the penguin, always gives his handkerchief to the
rhinoceros, and reads to the owl. Then, one day the zookeeper gets sick and he is
not able to go to the zoo to his friends. So, his friends left the zoo on the number
five bus and visited his best friend at home to make him feel better. A Sick day for
Amos McGee won the Caldecott Medal in 2011 for the illustrations that were done
by Erin E. Stead, who is the wife of the author, Philip C. Stead. She made a speech
on her winning, saying A picture bookallows a child ownership of art even if it s just
for the two weeks they check it out of the library. That book is theirs. I m not sure
any other art for replicates that feeling. She is right, every picture book that a person
picks up, buys, or checks out is a piece of art because all picture book illustrations are
different and unique.
Illustrations in pictures are meant to make the use of the book for entertainment. The
illustrations that Erin C. Stead uses in her all of her books are woodblock or also
known as woodcut printing and then she draws on the top of the prints in pencil to

McGee. Woodblock printing is a technique that is used to print text, images or
patterns. In an interview talking about the illustrations in her and her husband s
book, with MacMillan Children s on YouTube, the colors that are in the book are

After running both CMC and ROC Race on Saturday in Brooklyn NY, I jumped
back in my Prius and drove over 250 miles to Pennsylvania to run the Extreme
version of the Hardcore Mudd Run course. Registration and Festival: HMR ran
both Saturday and Sunday, so turnout on Sunday was lower and registration was
fast and easy. The festival area was set up well with a band for the several live
bands that played for days. Pre race MC: HMR didn t have an actual MC per say,
but the local Fire Department came and provided a very beautiful and emotional
memorial service for all those lost on September 11th. The Course: The course
offered three versions, the Sprint, the Ultra, and the Extreme versions. I opted to
run the Extreme because it was the longest distance and offered the most obstacles.
I researched the obstacles and course prior to deciding to run HRM, but I had no
idea how much of the course was going to be spent going both up and down the
