Abstract
The purpose of this experiment was to synthesize biodiesel using a green approach
in a laboratory setting to create an environmentally safe alternative to petroleum
diesel. Sodium Hydroxide was used as a catalyst in order to complete a
transesterification reaction. The experiment took place over two days total as the
glycerol and biodiesel compounds were given time to separate fully. A separatory
funnel was used to separate the two compounds and then they were examined with
infrared spectroscopy. The glycerol showed some OH bonding participating
possibly in Hydrogen bonding at about 3400 cm^ 1. It also showed another peak at
about 2900 cm^ 1 which could indicate some carbon hydrogen bonding occurring.
The Biodiesel however looked completely different with a peak at about 1750 cm^ 1
indicating ester presence and also peaks at around 2900 and 2850 possibly showing
carbon hydrogen bonding. Results proved esterification of our compound and

Without So Much as Knocking; Americanized; and Breakthrough he used techniques
such as language, juxtaposition and metaphors to express his views about the
negative effects of consumerism, American influence and technology.
In the poem Enter Without So Much as Knocking , Bruce Dawe uses the language of
television to display the effect technology and advertisements had on daily Australian
life in the 1950 s. In the first stanza, Dawe wrote ...first thing he heard was Bobby
Dazzler on Channel 7: Hello, hello, hello all you lucky people... The stanza is
focused on a ten day old baby who has been taken home and the first thing he hears
is the catch phrase of a TV personality. This tells us that in Dawe s world, children
are exposed to the news and the power of ads as young as possible, to force them
into a life of technology and big companies. In stanza three, the language becomes
more demanding and jarring. Dawe uses capitalization, repetition and short
sentences to create a list of rules society is being forced to follow. He uses road
rules such as walk. Don t walk. Turn left. No parking, and the lack of emotion in the
words highlights how he believes this is not the way to live. The fifth stanza is
written as the adult. It s a long sentence filled with the jargon of advertising and
superficial connections to family and friends, and through this language use Dawe
shows us exactly what he s afraid of.
Americanized is, as the title suggests, a poem about American influence. It is an
extended metaphor, where the mother in the poem is America, the child being
Australia, and their relationship which is not built on trust or love but rather need and

Fame and money can be the root of all evil. Never the less, we are contributing to the
madness when we purchase tabloid magazines, watch entertainment shows that
follow celebrity activities and judge them for their actions.
How do we as a society play a part in the demise of an actor, athletes, and musical
artist? We alienate them when they are a part of any scandal or scandals,
companies drop them from their products, magazines, tabloids, and media outlets
discuss the scandal non stop, flooding us with the story non stop. Whoever is a
part of the scandal is often given meaningless interviews or book and movie deals.
Any and everything the celebrity has done in the past, as well as the party of the
alleged scandal is dredged up. This is often called skeletons in the closet . What
they don t want out is often exposed and even if it s not true or a matter of privacy,
we don t care, all we want is the juicy info.

Logging is a method which has been used over a period of time to better understand
subsurface parameters and reservoir conditions. The Acoustic or Sonic log is one
such method which is used in combination with density and neutron logs in order to
determine these parameters. Full waveform acoustic logging has advanced
significantly in both theory and application in recent years, and these advances have
greatly increased the capability of log analysts to measure the physical properties of
formations (Paillet et al 1992). This report focuses on the basic application of sonic
logs in the petroleumindustry and the current advances made in their application. It
is also explained how porosity of the rocks are obtained from shaly formations using
sonic logs.
The principle of sonic logging involves a transmitter and a receiver wherein a signal
is sent from the transmitter and the amount of time taken until it has reached the
receiver is recorded. The speed of sound in the subsurface depends on the elastic
properties of the rock matrix, the porosity of the formations, fluid content and
