Essay on Analysis of Joy Williams Save the Whales, Screw...
Analysis of Joy Williams Save the Whales, Screw the Shrimp
Save the Whales, Screw the Shrimp is an essay written by Joy Williams, about the overwhelming
complacency that todays culture shows towards nature.Williams argues in a very satirical way, that
todays culture has all but completely lost touch with what nature really is, and that unless we as a
nation change our morals regarding the role that nature plays in human existence, we may very well
be witnessing the dawn of our own destruction.
An Evaluation of: Save the Whales, Screw the Shrimp
Williams is very satirical in the presentation of her topic, and the way that she addresses the reader
from the very first paragraph is very interesting inasmuch as she is almost ... Show more content on

Although many would agree that Williams has a very good point, her writing style belies conflict even
in her own views. For instance, she attempts to use her satire as a way of shocking the reader into
feeling her personal pain regarding the issue. However, if she truly felt as strongly as she would lead
one to believe, then it stands to reason that she would much rather have written an essay which
touched personal points in the lives of those who are percived to be the overindulgent, complacent,
and disrespectful citizens of our decadent culture. In this way she may have accomplished what she set
out to do in the beginning with this essay, which was to convince the target culture they need to
change their ways before it?s too late.
The overwhelming feeling througout the entire essay is that, ?This lady is on a rant?, and it is apparent
in the closing paragraphs of the essay that this was her intention, but the essay ends there, and seems
to come up short of a punchline. While most self proclaimed environmentalists would say that
Williams did a wonderful job jabbing our glutenous culture where it hurts, those of a more dedicated
banter would wonder just how much of a bite does this author take during her turn at the plate. It
would seem that she places herself outside of this realm of over utilization to the point where one can
only imagine her standing in a loin cloth eating bannanas all day. Take her affront on the

Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a type of cancer that is defined by permeation of the bone marrow,
blood, and other tissues by proliferative, clonal, abnormally differentiated, and occasionally poorly
differentiated treated cells of the hematopoietic system(1). The dynamic interaction between leukemia
cells and the bone marrow microenvironment is one of the characteristics of leukemia. The important
components of the bone marrow environment include tumor cells, extracellular matrix, non tomur
cells (fibroblasts, stromal cells, immune cells) and hypoxia(2). It is well known in solid tumors that
the excessive proliferation of tumor cells causes a severe hypoxia, which can lead to tumor
progression. In the hematologic malignancies, there is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Angiogenesis refers to the formation of new blood vessels from the previous arteries(11). Studies have
shown that tumor development and invasion in solid tumors are associated with angiogenesis, and
recent evidence suggests that angiogenesis may be in the development of acute myeloid leukemia(12).
In acute myeloid leukemia, angiogenesis directly contributes to the tumor progression by the provision
of necessary factors for blast proliferation as well as through angiogenic factors(13)..significant
angiogenic factors include VEGF A, BFGF, PDGF, FGF, in which among them VEGF A is the most
important. Furthermore the angiogenesis, VEGF A has other functions in the progress of leukemia
cells, which performs these functions by autocrine and paracrine loops. When VEGF A binds to its
receptors on leukemia cells it stimulates proliferation in these cells and also increases survival by
reducing apoptotic proteins (autocrine).

Grant Vs Lee Essay
Robert E. Lee or Ulysses S. Grant, who was the better general? Grant, in the north, had more soldiers
and better industries. Lee was at a disadvantage in the south because the confederacy didn t have as
good industries. They both received their military education at the United States Military Academy at
West Point. Lee and Grant were both respected men who had major ranks. They both won key battles
in the war. In the end, Lee surrendered to Grant at the Appomattox Courthouse. After the war both of
them became the president of something: one of the United States, the other of a college. Some people

Mental Health Professionals
After reading the case study, it has cast doubt in the reader s mind about mental health professionals.
Are they really helping the mentally ill or are they just doing a job for financial gain? The mental
health professionals in those institutions did not recognize that these patients were not mentally ill; but
the mentally ill residents observed that they were all sane. This example is the reason why excuses
have no place in medicine, and that most mental health professionals do not give an in depth
evaluation of a person or they just look for symptoms that are easily recognizable to suit given
disorder. Mental health professionals should provide evidence for detecting or diagnosing a mental
illness because mentally illness individuals often have several mental illnesses that co occur which
makes it very hard for medical professionals to diagnosed.

For example, in some cultures, if a person claims to be hearing voices they may be regarded as
someone with spiritual capabilities, whereas in our culture if someone claims to be hearing voices we
would suspect that they have a serious mental disorder. The consequences of mistakes made by
psychiatric diagnosis are that many conditions are believed to be permanent, so once an individual
receives a diagnosis, it can be difficult for them to be regarded as well again. For example, most
people believe that a person who has had a schizophrenic episode (they claimed to hear voices or they
reported delusions) will inevitably have further relapses. The truth is that about 25 percent of people
who have a schizophrenic episode recover and never have another

Odyssey Death and Rebirth in the Odyssey
The Odyssey, by Homer, is a classical piece of Greek literature. Throughout
The Odyssey, the Blind Bard makes use of many literary techniques in order
to lend meaning to the poem beyond its existence as a work of historic fiction
and aid his readers in the comprehension of the tale. One of these techniques
is the use of motifs. A motif is a recurring theme that is used throughout the
work. In The Odyssey, Homer makes use of many motifs including
eating/drinking, Odysseus s anger, bathing, and disguise, just to name a few.
However, perhaps the most important of Homer s motifs is the symbolic death
and rebirth theme. This motif is used throughout The Odyssey to emphasize
the growth and enlightenment of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cyclops, if
any mortal man ever asks you who it was that inflicted upon your eye this
shameful blinding, tell him that you were blinded by Odysseus, sacker of cities
(IX. 502 4). The symbolic rebirth of Odysseus can be emphasized by the
cave, which can be seen as a symbol of the womb, therefore making
Odysseus emergence from the cyclops s cave a true rebirth. The next
example of the death and rebirth motif is a rather obvious one that needs little
symbolic inference: Odysseus s descent into the underworld in book XI. Homer
uses many light and dark references to emphasize the death and rebirth
theme in this book darkness symbolizing death and light symbolizing life and
therefore rebirth. . . .how is it then, unhappy man, you have left the sunlight
and come here to look on dead men, and this place without pleasure? (XI.
93 4). While in the underworld, Odysseus gains insights about his eventual
return home. With this knowledge, Odysseus and his crew return to the world
of the living, symbolizing their rebirth. Again, light and dark images are used to
emphasize this rebirth. . . .where Helios, the sun, makes his uprising . . . (XII.
4). As illustrated in the preceding line, Odysseus returns from the Underworld
to the place where the sun rises the symbolism is obvious. The

All films, books and any other form of text have a hidden worldview whether intentional or not that
can stem from the writers personal view. This meaning that when engaging with these texts it is
important to understand your own personal beliefs and the underlying beliefs of the text and how they
are being portrayed and how they align with your personal worldview whilst still appreciating a

Counterfeiting Of The United States
According to Alan Behr and Sarah Hsia The Bureau of Customs and Border Protection estimates that
counterfeiting costs the United States an estimated $200 billion each year (2007). Counterfeit items
come in several forms such as bags, money, software, movies, drugs and much more. Many people fail
to see that this practice as unethical and harmful towards the company who has manufactured the
original item. There are laws in the United States that prohibit people from selling counterfeit items,
but there are no punishable laws against the buyers. If there were laws against people who buy
counterfeit items, there could possibly be a drop in these items being sold and distributed. Todd
Barosky explains that: counterfeiting is one of the oldest crimes in America...nearly two centuries of
American history, from the introduction of paper money in the British colonies of North America at
the end of the seventeenth century, to the nationalization of the currency by the federal government at
the middle of the nineteenth century, experiences with counterfeit money were both frequent and
widely shared (2010). Counterfeiting does not only happen in the United States, but in other parts of
the world as well. Jills Jusko reported that back in 2006, more than $155 million in counterfeit goods
were seized by the U.S government. The goods came from China, 81%, Hong Kong, 6%, Taiwan, 1%,
Pakistan, 1%, Korea, 1%, and from other places, 10% (2007). This causes a negative economic effect

What Effect Do Polar Bears Have On The Environment
In recent decades, the global warming threat has captured the attention of the nation and the world.
While the main focus began with concentrating on the effects this long term natural crisis would have
on the human population, select groups have worked to approach the topic in a manner that entails
prevention in order to help other animal and plant species around the globe. One such organization is
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which has played a major role in the
conservation of the polar bear species, one of the mammals most adversely affected by the recent
climate changes. As more research has been conducted regarding the polar bears, scientific name
Ursus Maritimus, the conclusions have been shocking. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Part of the original decision to list the species as threatened came from the fact that the critical habitat
of these animals had been greatly reduced due to natural and human activities. Critical habitat is
defined as the area that contains habitat features essential for the conservation of a threatened or
endangered species and which may require special management considerations ( Critical Habitat ).
From this definition coupled with the results of numerous studies, it was found that polar bears have
suffered from extreme declines in ice habitats where they carry out the majority of their lives. One
study found that ice thickness has decreased by 40% during the past 30 years and the average annual
extent of ice coverage in the polar region has diminished substantially, with an average annual
reduction of over 1 million square kilometers (Schliebe) meaning in a comparatively short period of
time the species has been subjected to substantial decreases in their environments. This habitat
destruction is the major concern for the polar bear species as human activity is immensely increasing
the rate at which their environments are destroyed. Not only does recent research reveal massive
decreases in the area of habitats which this species occupies, but it also provides evidence that the
lifestyles of these animals are being altered. With changing season lengths and temperatures, polar

That means that, without an adult, under age graffiti artists cannot purchase the medium needed for

To some, Picasso s WOMAN WITH FISH HAT painting may look like a beginner s attempt, but to an

looks like haphazard splatters of paint. In the crime thriller CONTRABAND a seemingly tarp full of

Amateurs consider many famous artworks as junk but connoisseur valuable them as treasures. Who is

America graffiti acquired its bad rap from the hippie era. Protesters of the Vietnam War and other
political and worldviews began to appear on college campus and city walls. Gangs emerged from an
increase of immigrants and their need to integrate. Many youths in large cities such as Los Angeles
and New York City joined gangs to help them gain a group identity, defend themselves against other
groups, and establish a unified presence. (Doak 16). Gangs identify themselves in many ways; their
clothing, colors, even their language and slang terms helps differentiate themselves from other gangs.

Welfare1 The United States or The United Welfare States A Cost Benefit Analysis
The role of welfare within our society has always been controversial. This problem emphasizes the
need to understand the roles of variable factors when pertaining to the subject of welfare within our
society. The proposed analysis will address the phenomenon of welfare assistance and several factors
which may contribute to the increase or decrease of welfare assistance to the poor in 4 ways: (1) by
defining major concepts and any other concepts about which there is likely to be misunderstanding,
(2) by further examining the past history pertaining to the subject of welfare assistance within the

But, regardless of how it is used, the preparation of a cost benefit analysis provides a useful
framework for consideration of the possible effects of a proposed policy.
Past History of Welfare Assistance: One of the first welfare programs to provide income support to the
poor was a federally backed plan called the Aid to Dependent Children (ADC) program. This
legislation was introduced with the establishment of the Social Security program during the Great
Depression. (Rowley, and Peacock 43) The ADC program which had started nearly sixty years ago is
now better known as the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program, which provided
a federal entitlement to economic support for single parents with children younger than 18 who fell
below a threshold of assets and income (Rowley, and Peacock 44). Federal guidelines allowed for
each state to set its own predetermined needs standards for families of different sizes and living
locations. Both the federal government and the states supplied funding for the AFDC program
(Rowley, and Peacock 50). In 1996 Congress adopted the Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF)
program by enacting the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act that
ultimately changed the structure of federal financial assistance to the states thereby abolishing the
AFDC program. Another social welfare program was the Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
program. Congress

Symbolism In In Her Secret Heart By Miss Mijares
Being a person who is used to being in control, she is in complete confusion on how to handle her

situation. Then again, it also causes her to ignore problems for which there are solutions if dealt with.
Miss Mijares is uncertain if she is ready to begin a new phase in her stationary life.
The third symbolism is Miss Mijares dream of being lost. This suggests that she thinks that she has

American agriculture a great deal. New farming machinery had a large role in the late 19th century,
giving farmers the opportunity to produce a lot more crops than they used to. The railroads had an
enormous influence on agriculture. They were able to charge the farmers large fees, expenses that
farmers barely had enough to cover, in order to transport their goods throughout the expansive

operation called skin graft, where a piece of healthy skin is transplanted to a new site on the body, and
other medical assistance that reach over $100,000. She and her family tried to reach McDonals to get a
settlement for the damages, but was welcomed with denial and lack of cooperation in settlements and
coverage for medical expenses, so the family decided to sue the company for gross negligence.
Through the discovery and length of the case it was discovered that the company had a large number
of complains with their coffee. It was also discovered that the coffee was made to be from 180 to 190
degrees Fahrenheit, which can cause third degree burns in a few seconds. When it came to allocations,
80% of the blame was placed on McDonals and the remaining was placed on Stella; this

Honesty In The Meaning Of Honesty
Student ID: 12172021
Deceptive honesty, deception that highlights honesty. Can we use honesty to justify deceit? We can
say an individual is honest when they do not lie, but what about an individual that brings out the truth
in others? One s ability to understand, interpret, and conjure the truth may make them even more
truthful than someone who is always honest.
Why are you fearful? (42:2) are the first words spoken by Jacob at the start his sons journey to Egypt.
This innocent question carries with it an overarching theme of Genesis that there is no need for fear
when being honest. In the story of Jacob s son, Joseph, one can see how deception can bring out fear
and in doing so, evoke even more truth. The story of Joseph s deceit toward his brothers would
perhaps be more accurately called one of honesty. His original lie ultimately gave way to far more
truth than deception. Joseph s lie gave us insight into his own character and allows us to better
understand why he was chosen by God to be an interpreter of His words.
In the first of meeting between Jacob and his brothers in Egypt truth immediately begins to arise from
Joseph s duplicity. The language used by Joseph and Jacob, both of whom have a strong connection to
God, at the very beginning of chapter 42 already insinuate a need for honesty. The idea of the land s
nakedness (42:10) referred to many times is a symbol of the naked uncensored truth that Joseph s
brothers will extol. The surprising honesty of

Yellow Wallpaper Critical Analysis
The feminist theory is an ougrowth of the general movement to empower women world wide.
Likewise to the feminist theory the short story Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perems Gillmarn
exposes the mental state of women in the late 1800s, and perharps even of the author s own struggle
with society run by men. Additionally, the three main areas of study and points of criticism in the
feminist theory, likewise to the short story exist through, the diffrences between men and women,
power dynamics between men and women and the female experience. The short story Yellow

and so on . The environment the protagonist is given is similar to a prison; the heavy bedstead, barred

at the prison. Although Jane feels restrained by her husband, the most important display of the
feminist theory is the psychological Imprisonment. At night in any kind of light, in twilight,

Modeling Cancer Cell Growth Of Cancer
Modeling Cancer Cell Growth When researching mathematics in nature, one thing that my teacher had
repeated was to find something that interested me. Wanting to become a biomedical engineer and
having suffered many losses in my family due to cancer, exploring cancer was the obvious choice.
Cancer is the leading cause of all human deaths in the world, and the financial costs of cancer have
been estimated at $1.16 trillion US dollars per year as of 2010. The development of mathematical
models of tumor cells is important to the growth kinetics, which may lead to the development of
successful treatment strategies.
Because of the great variance in malignant neoplasms (the cause of cancer), research has not been
great enough to save the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For this exploration, I decided to try to model the growth rate of tumor cells through calculus in order
to discover the advantages and disadvantages of certain models, including the exponential model, the
Gompertz model, and the Universal Law.
Premise of the Exploration
For this exploration, I will be using the data on the growth of tumor size found by a 1970 mouse
mammary study (citation needed). This data was collected over the course of 40 days for two different
types of cancer. This data has been used to create the Gompertzian model and the Fundamental Law,
which I will use later in this exploration.

When I first started researching this, one conclusion that I made was that big cells grow faster, and

Fivers In Watership Down
Fivers Evolution
If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Quote from Frederick Douglass. This quote was
emphasized greatly throughout the novel Watership Down, by Richard Adams. Fiver, a dynamic
character, is small and timid, but only because he sees far ahead of what most rabbits see. He knows
that something bad will happen to the rabbit s home. Fiver guides the group through their travels,
although it is indirect through his brother Hazel because he is not someone that the pack would exactly
look up to since he is small and timid. Plus, they are only leaving their warren because of a bad
instinct that Fiver has about it. At the beginning of the novel Fiver is a timid rabbit, but throughout the
book he begins to change into a confident ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The rabbits became strange in many ways, different from other rabbits. They knew well enough what
was happening. But even to themselves they pretended that all was well, for the food was good, they
were protected, they had nothing to fear but the one fear; and that struck here and there, never enough
at a time to drive them away. They forgot the ways of wild rabbits. They forgot El ahrairah, for what
use had they for tricks and cunning, living in the enemy s warren and paying his price? (116). I was
surprised that Fiver s instincts are actually right. In this quote Fiver is explaining how the warren they
joined was a bad place and he finally figured it out. Now, his group trusts him and respects his
instincts. Do? replied Fiber. Why, go now. I told Cowslip we were going before I left the burrow.
(117). As you can tell, Fiver has confidence now. Before, he would not even try to boss the group
around and if he did they would not listen. But, now that they know that he was right about his
instincts, they are willing to trust him as a leader. As the novel progresses, Fiver gains confidence
when his feelings are vital to the group s

Los Rancho Los Cerritos House
On Friday I had the honor to visit the historical Rancho Los Cerritos House; also known as Rancho
Los Cerritos or Casa de los Cerritos, in Long Beach, California, it was the largest and most impressive
adobe residence raised in southern California during the Mexican period. The structure of the house
was built in 1844 by merchant Jonathan Temple, a Yankee pioneer who became a Mexican citizen.
Los Cerritos means the little hills in English. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1970. I

family sold the house to the City of Long Beach in 1955. The City transformed the house into an
exhibition hall devoted to teaching the general population about California s rancho period, so that the
public can get the chance of exploring this phenomenal and historical site.
After watching the 15 minute video we moved outside of the building and we signed up to visit the

Glucosamine Research Paper
Learn the Benefits Of Glucosamine For Dogs Found in the cartilage of living animals is a natural
substance known as glucosamine. Aiding in the production of cartilage, glucosamine helps to build
healthy joints in animals such as dogs. For years, people have been supplementing glucosamine for
dogs with much success. They have found that by using this supplement, there is significant pain relief
for dogs suffering with joint problems such as osteoarthritis. Recognizing the signs of joint pain,
understanding the uses and learning how glucosamine works can help you decide if glucosamine is
right for your pet.
Glucosamine is widely known for its ability to assist in providing relief for joint conditions and
diseases. Osteoarthritis is a common affliction to dogs with senior pets more likely to be affected. All
joints can be affected but hip joints are most commonly involved. This is also known as hip dysplasia
which can cause the cartilage of the joints to be worn at a significantly higher rate. This can lead to
painful bone to bone contact causing great pain and discomfort. Osteoarthritis can also affect knees,
shoulders and elbows. All of these conditions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When dogs are younger, cartilage is routinely broken down and replaced. Naturally occurring,
glucosamine helps synthesize the growth of new cartilage. As pets age, they are not able to produce
glucosamine at the levels they could when they were younger. As a result, the underproduction of new
cartilage can result in painful joints. Over time, this can cause significant discomfort and pain. By
supplementing, you are able to increase the amount of new cartilage being produced. This increase in
production helps to even out the balance thus providing pain relief. Because of the way glucosamine
acts, it provides not only short term pain relief but enables the body to produce cartilage at a faster rate
providing longer term

Rick explains why he is not able to retire an android such as Luba Luft as he has feelings for androids
saying there is no reason to retire them because all they want to do is be like a human and be treated as
a human. He believes the reason why these androids are coming to Earth is because they want to stop
working as slaves for the humans on Mars and be able to live how they want to live. Dick uses a
stylistic device in this quote which is empathy. This device is used to find a shared feeling with a
character and this is shown in Rick Deckard as he has empathy to the androids especially to Luba

Analysis Of Oedipus The King ¸ Jocasta
Suicide is a desperate act that puts forward a clear yet sombre statement to their audience. Keeping
this is mind, the question arises, why do people commit suicide? In Sophocles play, Oedipus The
King¸ Jocasta who is both wife and mother to Oedipus is an excellent example of why one might
commit suicide due to two major themes. The first theme is pride and manifests itself in Jocasta s
prideful character. The second theme is prophecy and its relation to suicide is found it Jocasta s actions
after she realizes the truth. Jocasta s arrogant character and the discovery of the prophecy s fulfilment
are what drive Jocasta to suicide.
Jocasta s egotistical nature is evident throughout the play and this aspect, along with other features of
the play, are what contribute to her unruly demise. She is portrayed as an arrogant individual through
her actions and lines spoken in the play. After the messenger arrives with news of Polybus death,
Oedipus is relieved that his adopted father had died thus, unable to fulfill the prophecy. Jocasta
responds with a boastful remark stating, There. Didn t I tell you from the start (Sophocles 1064 1065).
This contemptuous statement directed towards Oedipus showcases Jocasta s personality, and is a
major factor that contributes to her death. In addition to being insolent, Jocasta portrays traits of
skepticism, because she questions the prophecy that Tiresias had foretold, A prophet? Well then, free
yourself of every charge! Listen to me and

The Scriptures Of Hindu Culture And Philosophy
The Bhagavad Gita or simply Gita, conceivably the most recognized of all nonpareil scriptures of
Hindu culture and philosophy, is universally perceived as one of the world s ethical literatures. The
Sanskrit title, Bhagavad Gita, is commonly construed as Song of the Lord. The Gita is incorporated
into the sixth book of the longest Hindu classic, Mahabharata, although it is known to be a subsequent
accretion to the epic, which stands on its own distinction. The ideology encapsulated in the Bhagavad
Gita, doing action with detachment from the consequences is relevant and vital to our understanding
of way of life even in the contemporary western world. The teachings of the Gita assist people to
manage their states of mental agitation, desires and emotions which will lead them to take right
decisions followed by right actions. This certainly explains its immense recognition both in the East
and the West. Distinguished philosophers, intellectuals, and scientists have conceded that the
Bhagavad Gita presents profound wisdom. Gandhi once proclaimed:
When doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and I see not one ray of hope on
the horizon, I turn to Bhagavad Gita and find a verse to comfort me; and I immediately begin to smile
in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. Those who meditate on the Gita will derive fresh joy and new
meanings from it every day.
The Gita is an insightful response to an abiding human quandary of discerning right from wrong.

Analysis of Joy Williams Save the Whales, Screw the Shrimp Save the Whales, Screw the Shrimp is an essay written by Joy Williams, about the overwhelming complacency that todays culture shows towards nature.Williams argues in a very satirical way, that todays culture has all but completely lost touch with what nature really is, and that unless we as a nation change our morals regarding the role that nature plays in human existence, we may very well be witnessing the dawn of our own destruction. An Evaluation of: Save the Whales, Screw the Shrimp Williams is very satirical in the presentation of her topic, and the way that she addresses the reader from the very first paragraph is very interesting inasmuch as she is almost ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although many would agree that Williams has a very good point, her writing style belies conflict even in her own views. For instance, she attempts to use her satire as a way of shocking the reader into feeling her personal pain regarding the issue. However, if she truly felt as strongly as she would lead one to believe, then it stands to reason that she would much rather have written an essay which touched personal points in the lives of those who are percived to be the overindulgent, complacent, and disrespectful citizens of our decadent culture. In this way she may have accomplished what she set out to do in the beginning with this essay, which was to convince the target culture they need to change their ways before it?s too late. The overwhelming feeling througout the entire essay is that, ?This lady is on a rant?, and it is apparent in the closing paragraphs of the essay that this was her intention, but the essay ends there, and seems to come up short of a punchline. While most self proclaimed environmentalists would say that Williams did a wonderful job jabbing our glutenous culture where it hurts, those of a more dedicated banter would wonder just how much of a bite does this author take during her turn at the plate. It would seem that she places herself outside of this realm of over utilization to the point where one can only imagine her standing in a loin cloth eating bannanas all day. Take her affront on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Acute Myeloid Leukemia Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a type of cancer that is defined by permeation of the bone marrow, blood, and other tissues by proliferative, clonal, abnormally differentiated, and occasionally poorly differentiated treated cells of the hematopoietic system(1). The dynamic interaction between leukemia cells and the bone marrow microenvironment is one of the characteristics of leukemia. The important components of the bone marrow environment include tumor cells, extracellular matrix, non tomur cells (fibroblasts, stromal cells, immune cells) and hypoxia(2). Studies have shown that tumor development and invasion in solid tumors are associated with angiogenesis, and recent evidence suggests that angiogenesis may be in the development of acute myeloid leukemia(12). In acute myeloid leukemia, angiogenesis directly contributes to the tumor progression by the provision of necessary factors for blast proliferation as well as through angiogenic factors(13)..significant angiogenic factors include VEGF A, BFGF, PDGF, FGF, in which among them VEGF A is the most important. Furthermore the angiogenesis, VEGF A has other functions in the progress of leukemia cells, which performs these functions by autocrine and paracrine loops. When VEGF A binds to its receptors on leukemia cells it stimulates proliferation in these cells and also increases survival by reducing apoptotic proteins (autocrine). ... Are they really helping the mentally ill or are they just doing a job for financial gain? The mental health professionals in those institutions did not recognize that these patients were not mentally ill; but the mentally ill residents observed that they were all sane. This example is the reason why excuses have no place in medicine, and that most mental health professionals do not give an in depth evaluation of a person or they just look for symptoms that are easily recognizable to suit given disorder. Mental health professionals should provide evidence for detecting or diagnosing a mental illness because mentally illness individuals often have several mental illnesses that co occur which makes it very hard for medical professionals to diagnosed. One of these techniques is the use of motifs. A motif is a recurring theme that is used throughout the work. In The Odyssey, Homer makes use of many motifs including eating/drinking, Odysseus s anger, bathing, and disguise, just to name a few. • 13. Counterfeiting Of The United States According to Alan Behr and Sarah Hsia The Bureau of Customs and Border Protection estimates that counterfeiting costs the United States an estimated $200 billion each year (2007). Counterfeit items come in several forms such as bags, money, software, movies, drugs and much more. Many people fail to see that this practice as unethical and harmful towards the company who has manufactured the original item. There are laws in the United States that prohibit people from selling counterfeit items, but there are no punishable laws against the buyers. If there were laws against people who buy counterfeit items, there could possibly be a drop in these items being sold and distributed. Todd Barosky explains that: counterfeiting is one of the oldest crimes in America...nearly two centuries of American history, from the introduction of paper money in the British colonies of North America at the end of the seventeenth century, to the nationalization of the currency by the federal government at the middle of the nineteenth century, experiences with counterfeit money were both frequent and widely shared (2010). Counterfeiting does not only happen in the United States, but in other parts of the world as well. Jills Jusko reported that back in 2006, more than $155 million in counterfeit goods were seized by the U.S government. The goods came from China, 81%, Hong Kong, 6%, Taiwan, 1%, Pakistan, 1%, Korea, 1%, and from other places, 10% (2007). This causes a negative economic effect ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One such organization is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which has played a major role in the conservation of the polar bear species, one of the mammals most adversely affected by the recent climate changes. As more research has been conducted regarding the polar bears, scientific name Ursus Maritimus, the conclusions have been shocking. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Part of the original decision to list the species as threatened came from the fact that the critical habitat of these animals had been greatly reduced due to natural and human activities. Critical habitat is defined as the area that contains habitat features essential for the conservation of a threatened or endangered species and which may require special management considerations ( Critical Habitat ). From this definition coupled with the results of numerous studies, it was found that polar bears have suffered from extreme declines in ice habitats where they carry out the majority of their lives. One study found that ice thickness has decreased by 40% during the past 30 years and the average annual extent of ice coverage in the polar region has diminished substantially, with an average annual reduction of over 1 million square kilometers (Schliebe) meaning in a comparatively short period of time the species has been subjected to substantial decreases in their environments. This habitat destruction is the major concern for the polar bear species as human activity is immensely increasing the rate at which their environments are destroyed. Not only does recent research reveal massive decreases in the area of habitats which this species occupies, but it also provides evidence that the lifestyles of these animals are being altered. This legislation was introduced with the establishment of the Social Security program during the Great Depression. (Rowley, and Peacock 43) The ADC program which had started nearly sixty years ago is now better known as the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program, which provided a federal entitlement to economic support for single parents with children younger than 18 who fell below a threshold of assets and income (Rowley, and Peacock 44). Federal guidelines allowed for each state to set its own predetermined needs standards for families of different sizes and living locations. Both the federal government and the states supplied funding for the AFDC program (Rowley, and Peacock 50). In 1996 Congress adopted the Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF) program by enacting the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act that ultimately changed the structure of federal financial assistance to the states thereby abolishing the AFDC program. We can say an individual is honest when they do not lie, but what about an individual that brings out the truth in others? One s ability to understand, interpret, and conjure the truth may make them even more truthful than someone who is always honest. Why are you fearful? (42:2) are the first words spoken by Jacob at the start his sons journey to Egypt. This innocent question carries with it an overarching theme of Genesis that there is no need for fear when being honest. In the story of Jacob s son, Joseph, one can see how deception can bring out fear and in doing so, evoke even more truth. The story of Joseph s deceit toward his brothers would perhaps be more accurately called one of honesty. His original lie ultimately gave way to far more truth than deception. Joseph s lie gave us insight into his own character and allows us to better understand why he was chosen by God to be an interpreter of His words. In the first of meeting between Jacob and his brothers in Egypt truth immediately begins to arise from Joseph s duplicity. The language used by Joseph and Jacob, both of whom have a strong connection to God, at the very beginning of chapter 42 already insinuate a need for honesty. The idea of the land s nakedness (42:10) referred to many times is a symbol of the naked uncensored truth that Joseph s brothers will extol. The surprising honesty of ... He believes the reason why these androids are coming to Earth is because they want to stop working as slaves for the humans on Mars and be able to live how they want to live. Dick uses a stylistic device in this quote which is empathy. This device is used to find a shared feeling with a character and this is shown in Rick Deckard as he has empathy to the androids especially to Luba Luft, who was killed recently by Phil Resch saying androids should be treated how humans are treated and describing Luba s voice being really beautiful just like any other human. ... • 36. Analysis Of Oedipus The King ¸ Jocasta Suicide is a desperate act that puts forward a clear yet sombre statement to their audience. Keeping this is mind, the question arises, why do people commit suicide? In Sophocles play, Oedipus The King¸ Jocasta who is both wife and mother to Oedipus is an excellent example of why one might commit suicide due to two major themes. The first theme is pride and manifests itself in Jocasta s prideful character. The second theme is prophecy and its relation to suicide is found it Jocasta s actions after she realizes the truth. Jocasta s arrogant character and the discovery of the prophecy s fulfilment are what drive Jocasta to suicide. Jocasta s egotistical nature is evident throughout the play and this aspect, along with other features of the play, are what contribute to her unruly demise. She is portrayed as an arrogant individual through her actions and lines spoken in the play. After the messenger arrives with news of Polybus death, Oedipus is relieved that his adopted father had died thus, unable to fulfill the prophecy. Jocasta responds with a boastful remark stating, There. Didn t I tell you from the start (Sophocles 1064 1065). This contemptuous statement directed towards Oedipus showcases Jocasta s personality, and is a major factor that contributes to her death. In addition to being insolent, Jocasta portrays traits of skepticism, because she questions the prophecy that Tiresias had foretold, A prophet? Well then, free yourself of every charge! WorldCom s expenses as a percentage of its total revenue increased because the growth rate of its earnings dropped. In an effort to increase revenue, WorldCom reduced the amount of money it held in reserve (to cover liabilities for the companies it had acquired) by $2.8 billion and moved this money into the revenue line of its financial statements. That wasn t enough to boost the earnings that the CEO wanted. In 2000, WorldCom began classifying operating expenses as long term capital investments. Hiding these expenses in this way gave them another $3.85 billion. These newly classified assets were expenses that WorldCom paid to lease phone network lines from other companies to access their networks. They also added a journal entry for $500 million in computer expenses, but supporting documents for the expenses were never found. The Scriptures Of Hindu Culture And Philosophy The Bhagavad Gita or simply Gita, conceivably the most recognized of all nonpareil scriptures of Hindu culture and philosophy, is universally perceived as one of the world s ethical literatures. The Sanskrit title, Bhagavad Gita, is commonly construed as Song of the Lord. The Gita is incorporated into the sixth book of the longest Hindu classic, Mahabharata, although it is known to be a subsequent accretion to the epic, which stands on its own distinction.
