literature in America Essay
When I think of America, I think of freedom. We live in a country where we can do what we choose.
We can express our opinions and live our own lives. Individuals can form their own individual beliefs
and they can do what they want and pursue what they wish. They can play basketball, go to school,
get a job, have a family, buy a house, or go to church. We are free. We have opportunity to be
whatever we want to make ourselves. When you ask, what is an American? I find it no different to ask,
what is freedom? America and freedom are intertwined and this relationship is evident in American
literature.
The notion of freedom and everything relating to freedom unites all of the American literature we
have read. In Twain s Huckleberry Finn, Huck ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Self Reliance, Emerson explains that our freedom to choose and our ability to think what we want
to think define what America is. I believe it is characteristic of Americans to strive for what they think
is right. In Poe s the House of Usher, Usher decided to bury his sister alive. I think this story can relate
to us today. Many people would say that America is known for persevering through rough times. I d
say the last few years have been a rough time for America, from 9/11 to now the war in Iraq.
Sometimes situations may seem unbeatable, like being trapped in a coffin, but if you fight hard
enough, like we are against the terrorists and in Iraq, you can overcome anything. American s can
overcome anything. Usher s sister was buried alive and finally broke from the coffin after a week of
struggle. Also, many of the authors we have studied describe nature in riveting detail. To them and to
me, our beautiful nature represents something more then just what you see with your eye it represents
America s freedom. In Emerson s Nature, Thorpe s The Big Bear of Arkansas, Twain s Huckleberry
Finn, Bryant s Thanatopsis, and Edwards Shadows of Divine Things, we see an apparent love and lust
of nature by the authors. The great aspects of nature represent the great aspects of America freedom.
The mountains and trees scatter in nature in pure harmony just like the American people live freely in
America. The authors had a fascination

David Hume Argument For Motivation
Many philosophical pieces and writers have attempted, throughout history, to explain motivation and
the factors which lead to motivation. A main topic among discussions of motivation is the separation
between sole belief, and action upon that belief and what stimulates actions based on such beliefs.
David Hume, a philosopher from The Age of Enlightenment, proposed his understanding and
argument for motivation, which has been coined as: The Humean Theory of Motivation. According to
The Humean Theory of Motivation, reasons are a necessary motivating factors of acting on a belief.
He believes that motivation is not a sole matter of moral judgments, but that beliefs only influence
behavior and action in combination with emotional states. These ... Show more content on

Despite its strong explanation and relevance, there are criticisms towards this theory regarding
motivating factors and reasoning. Specifically, some argue that The Humean Theory of Motivation is
the idea that The Humean Theory of Motivation is objectively not normative(Hubin, 1999), or not
directly stating what ought, or what ought not be. Another, more complex, argument against The
Humean Theory of Motivation is written in G.F. Scheuler s The Humean Theory of Motivation
Rejected, He explains that, while desires are surely present in reasoning, desires are not solely
applicable, and do not have a sole force on motivation. He states that reasoning is done with
representations of things, not the things themselves, even when the things being represented are one s
own desires(Schueler, 2009). In other words, Scheuler believes that if an individual is is reasoning
how to satisfy her desires in accordance to desire belief based reasoning, that the reason is causing the
motivation, rather than the desire itself. He is stating that when one reasons with desire they are
representing the desires rather than only being focused on the desire itself(Schueler,

Michael Pollan Agriculture
With concerns of climate change on the rise, a growing population, and a fear of being unable to
maintain water demands many of our daily practices are coming into question. Agriculture is not
immune to the criticisms, particularly with regard to fossil fuels. In the mid 1900s farming operations
started to exploit fertilizers and land to increase the yield of inexpensive grains. Such practices require
fossil fuels in immense quantities through fertilizers, pesticides, and transportation. However,
passionate debates often occur over the importance and where to go from here. Michael Pollan,
Katherine Mangu Ward, and the National Chicken Council vary widely in their opinions but it is likely
that no one direction is feasible.
Pollan believes that industrial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Katherine Mangu Ward and representatives from The National Chicken Council (NCC) were vocal in
their rebuttals. Mangu Ward believes that Pollan s idealistic view of transformed American and world
agriculture is suited only for the luxury classes. It is improbable to expect the masses to spend
exurbanite amounts of money on organic local produce. This is an understandable concern. The lack
of labor required to supply the country with enough foodstuffs and the potential loss of choices
concern the NCC. The NCC agrees that the system is not perfect but nor is a local supply chain which
would be unable to provide consumers nonnative fruits and vegetables. With regard to the rearing of
chickens the council asserts that there is no evidence of antibiotic resistance, the flocks are kept
healthy and safe, and inexpensive. Local sustainable methods are assumed to be impractical for
national production, requiring vast swaths of land and excessive carbon emissions. Not to mention the
expenses. Straying from the current system presents many economic and social challenges. Do these

Ender Wiggin Conflicts
Andrew Ender Wiggin is a six year old boy on Earth in the future and he is very different from other
people. He is able to make calculations, predictions, and inferences, extremely fast. He is bullied at
school and at home by his brother. One day, a man from the International Fleet comes to Ender s

challenges. In the book Ender s Game, by Orson Scott Card, Ender Wiggin faces many conflicts. He is
unhappy with his life, gets picked on and people try to hurt him, is manipulated and feels used .
One of Ender s conflicts is internal. At several points in the book, it seemed as if he had lost the will to

Literary Analysis Of Medea
Medea
It was very hard to be a women of the time Medea was written in. Women had to buy husbands and
she alone has to make the marriage work or it is her fault the marriage falls apart. Men could leave
their wives if they wished . Medea is set in a time that women were oppressed and had little to no
rights. Medea did everything she did because She was mentally ill, very isolated and a single mother,
but Jason as a man of that time did have a right to leave her.
Medea was mentally ill, and we can see this in the Euripides play Medea in lines 791 795. I weep to
think of the deed I have to do Next after that; for I shall kill my own children. This explains that
Medea wanting revenge so bad would go to such lengths as to kill her own children. She also is very
depressed and angry when Jason first leaves her. She lies without food and gives herself up to
suffering, Wasting away every moment of the day in tears. The illness Medea has is Clinical
Depression. The website that had all the symptoms that medea has was MayoClinic. The most
common signs of Clinical Depression are feelings of sadness/ hopefulness Medea shows this sign
when she says Ah, lost in my sufferings, I wish, I wish I might die. ( Euripides, line 98). To diagnose
clinical depression the symptoms have to be severe enough to cause noticeable changes in their
personality. Which Medea does show on multiple occasions. Another sign of clinical depression that
medea show is impaired indecisiveness. Medea shows

Dionysus is that every action has a consequence. We also receive a more indepth and personal

festival named for Dionysus: we essentially become immersed in several aspects of his being and
decisions. Overall the immersion of Dionysus being all lead up to the lesson that every action has a

This essay will be about how the perspective of Roswell/UFO s have changed over time. How after
this incident, UFO s have been seen all over the world. In America, over 80% of it s population now

UFO s exist. Will aliens were believed way before this era, because people have said there s no way
we re the only people in the billions of galaxies. There was no evidence or proof of aliens being

aliens do exist.

why, will first if someone is very religious, they can say there is now way one planet in billions of

does not want us to be scared or alarmed (THE UFO COVER UP). It s a very protective reason for the
world to not go into panic and havoc (The UFO COVER UP).Because of the reasonings, this shows
that aliens exist. For example. it s like hiding something that you know you ve done wrong but can t
hide. Giving new explanations and cover up proving it doesn t exist when all these occurrences have
already taken place. There s no way of hiding that the government is just blinding the public from
UFO s, making us worry about our own lives, and our own self belief. (The UFO COVER UP).
In conclusion, Roswell s incident has been proven that a UFO has crashed near this area. From why
the military had covered up this situation so quickly, with all the new sightings, evidence proving
aliens have been encountered with at Roswell. Also with the government secrecy, Area 51 being so
secretive, military never giving out word about aliens from all the occurrences that have taken. These
all gives reason for people to believe that aliens do exist. Proving that this incident might have been

Thomas Malthusian Research Paper
Malthus Thomas Robert Malthus was a well known economist as well as a clergyman. He was born on
February 13th, 1766, in Surrey, England, and was the sixth of seven children. Malthus attended
Cambridge in 1784 and graduated four years later with honors in mathematics. In 1789, Malthus
became a deacon in the Church of England and curate of Okewood Chapel in Surrey. In 1798, he
anonymously published his renowned work An Essay on the Principle of Population as it affects the
Future Improvement of Society, with Remarks on the Speculations of Mr. Godwin, M. Condorcet, and
other Writers. In 1803, Malthus published a second, much enlarged edition of the population essay. A

Malthus was an economic pessimist to those who disagreed with him and a realist to his followers. He
viewed poverty as something that was inevitable because, If the only check to population is misery,
the result of any improvement is ultimately to enable a larger population than before to live in misery,
so that resource improvement actually increases the sum of misery and that betterment of the lot of
mankind is impossible without stern limits on reproduction. This means that there is overpopulation,
and the natural check of misery (poverty) is coming into effect in order to balance out overpopulation.
However, by trying to help poverty, we are (according to Malthus) making the situation worse. In the
short run, there seems to be an improvement because those poor people are better off and can do well.
This situation would lead to a larger population than before, and therefore would lead to a greater
number of people becoming impoverished. He therefore shunned charities and proposed that by
leaving poverty alone, and by moral restraint and vice (contraception and population control); the
situation would take care of itself. If the only check to population is misery, the population will grow
until it is miserable enough to check its growth.
In the last two hundred years, Malthus Essay has sparked controversy and made people aware of
population growth. In every generation, there have been Malthusians who caused panic among people.

The Psydiscipline Of The Sapir-Whorf Exphesis
In linguistics, one of the most important and most controversial, so to speak is the Sapir Whorf
hypothesis. This blog post is going to focus on this hypothesis.
Language is not thought
Before anything else, we need to establish one thing: language is not thought, just as well that heaven
is not hell. One might say that he is thinking using words and sentences, but this is not the case.
I, for one, had always believed that I think using words. But this article from Science 2.0 let me know
that thoughts are not words and vice versa. Also, we watched a video clip in class wherein Steven
Pinker, a Harvard professor, explained that language is different from thought, writing and grammar.
I want to highlight this paragraph from the Science 2.0 article by ... Show more content on

However language and thought are connected. We have a subdiscipline for that, called
psycholinguistics. This subdiscipline is concerned with the relation of cognition and language.
We are yet to discuss this topic so forgive me for my lack of knowledge.
The Sapir Whorf hypothesis
We may have said that cognition is not the same as language, but according to Edward Sapir and
Benjamin Lee Whorf, language affects a person s thoughts. To make it formal, the definition given by
dictionary.com might be useful:
[The Sapir Whorf theory is] a theory developed by Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf that states
that the structure of a language determines or greatly influences the modes of thought and behavior
characteristic of the culture in which it is spoken.
Linguistic relativism
This is the weaker form of the hypothesis and states that different languages encode different
categories. Therefore, speakers of different languages view the world in different ways. I see that I
need to provide concrete examples of this, and so I have decided to includ evidences for linguistic
relativism cited in Introduction to linguistics by Fromkin et. al.

breakup. Although he was a bit emotional, he moved on. Others also advocated a similar statement,
But nearly everyone I ve spoke with, Adnan s friends and teachers say he took the breakup like anyone
would. Adnan s friend Mac Francis said Adnan initially was devastated and jealous about the new
boyfriend. Said he grumbled about it in a typical guy way, nothing strange. Everyone I talked to said
some version of this, that he wasn t rage filled or vindictive. He was just sad (Episode 2: The Breakup

Adnan and Hae after their breakup. After analyzing these pieces of evidence, one can infer the claim
of being upset over Hae isn t verified through anyone. Another component to Adnan s innocence
would be Asia McClain and the library. Thereafter, a witness, Asia McClain, had physically spoken to
Adnan when he allegedly murdered Hae. Asia McClain was a high schooler that attended Adnan s
school and composed a couple letters to him after he was arrested. One of these letters reads, Dear

A Brief History of Antibiotics, Antibiotic Resistance, and Antibiotic Alternatives
Antibiotic Resistance and Alternatives
Antibiotics have been commonly, though mistakenly, thought of as the ultimate cure, for almost all
illness, for over half a century now. However, the intended use of antibiotics is for the treatment of
bacterial infections and diseases. Viruses or fungi related illnesses will not be affected by antibiotics.
This misunderstanding of the use of antibiotics has led to overuse, or the misuse, of antibiotics, in a
wide range of countries worldwide. As a result of overuse, misuse, and abuse, antibiotics, once hailed
as the savior of mankind, are an increasing threat as bacteria grow ever stronger. (Bunyard) The ...

aureus was one of the first publicized bacteria known to have become resistant to penicillin. (Ed.
Bonomo and Ed. Tolmasky) In London, just a few years after the introduction of penicillin, strains of

destroying it. (Bunyard) S. aureus caused serious illnesses, such as pneumonia, endocarditis,
osteomylitis, and toxic shock syndrome. (Ed. Bonomo and Ed. Tolmasky) The clinical impact of this
resistance was staggering; this harmful pathogen had once again become untreatable.
Since the 1940 s, antibiotic production has increased rapidly. By 1946, in one hospital, 14% of the
strains isolated from patients had gained such resistance. In 1949, the U.S. produced penicillin and
streptomycin at the rate of 6.5 tons per month. (Bunyard) In the early 1950 s, nearly 60% of the strains
isolated from patients had gained resistance. (Bunyard) By 1954, the rate of production of broad

18,000 tons a year, nearly half of which is used in the intensive rearing of animals as growth

Mythology In Fan Mythology
The definition of the term Myth is that it is defined by its content, context, and/or its function. Most
often when we think or hear the world myth we think of ancient Greek and Roman stories that tell us
tales of gods, heroes, and monsters; in the modern world it is also used to butter up advertisements,
and of course in fan fiction.
When you look at the concept of myth it has been important to the practice and analysis of fan work,
including fan fiction, on three levels: content, form, and theory. In terms of content, traditional tales
including mythologies provide us with characters, narratives, monsters, and story worlds for fans to
use in the generation of new fictions, as proven by the 2,173 stories in the Greek and Roman

Instead, mass culture is a method of cultural control, a key part of the workings of capitalist
domination.
However, there is a strong distinction between mass and popular culture that seems to be no longer
defensible to most media scholars and cultural critics, studies of fan creations such as fanfiction have
shown us just how entwined certain popular forms are with mass culture. Describing the texts of
popular culture as myths then becomes a way of claiming profitable culture as common culture and
the basis for a genuine fan culture that exists outside capitalist networks of production, distribution,
and consumption.
Of the 2,173 fics on AO3, around half remain within the Greek mythic historical story world: such fics

as the popular Persephone/Hades, to the obscure, Helenus/Neoptolemus. The most common kind of
story that can be found here is a retelling of a myth that fleshes out the description of the classical
gods and heroes according to modern fictional and psychological norms. There are two main kinds of
modern retelling fanfictions on the AO3 site. The first being stories about how the ancient gods and
heroes have survived the modern world, and second, being crossover fics. In certain crossovers, the

How Different Chemicals Affect Surface Tension
The aim of my experiment was to figure out how different chemicals affect surface tension. I chose
this experiment because I have always wondered how a drop of water stays together as it falls through
the air. My independent variable was the different chemicals used. My dependant variable was which
liquid stayed on the penny best. The control in this experiment was pure water. My hypothesis was; if
water mixed with salt and water mixed with detergent is tested, then detergent will cause the surface
tension to weaken the most. By definition, Surface tension is the property of the surface of a liquid
that allows it to resist an external force, due to the cohesive nature of its molecules (USGS).
Molecules in a drop of water cling to each other. This is why they can stay together as they fall
through the air (Wick 9). In addition, water molecules at the surface of a liquid form stronger bonds
(USGS). This is because they have no adjacent molecules on top of them so they exert more powerful
forces to molecules on and below the surface of a liquid (USGS). For example, water striders can
glide on the surface of water because their mass is not strong enough to break the surface tension
(USGS). The dependent variable in this experiment was, which liquid stayed on the penny best. The
independent variable was the different chemicals used.
Water droplets form spheres because they are pulled by the cohesive forces of the surface layer
(USGS). A drop of water in its smallest size is a

The Evolution of the U.S. Constitution, 1781 – 1789 Essay...
Politics began to play a bigger role in the lives of American colonists during the beginning of a
growing country. After the Declaration of Independence was written in 1776, the country was
challenged with the problem of creating a process for governing the states. The Patriots were
concerned about forming a centralized Parliament, like in Britain, because power was abused by the
wealthy. Initially, the vision was to give states governing authority and leave minimal power to a
national Union. But as the years passed and conflicts arose, there was a need to create a national
government using the U.S Constitution as the blueprint.
The focus of the paper is to learn what led to the formation of the U.S. Constitution. First, it s

The main disagreement was deciding who had the right to vote. Democratic Patriots wanted equal
rights for all free men, even those who were poor. In most states, conservatives disagreed and felt
strongly that poor men should not vote because their vote would confound and destroy all distinctions
and prostrate all ranks to the common level (Lapsansky, 134). As the debate lingered, most free men
qualified to vote because they owned farms, but slaves and women were not given voting rights.
Another debate centered on religious freedom. Most states supported freedom of religion in their
constitution, and with time religious liberty, without the interference of the state, became common
from state to state with the exception of Massachusetts and Connecticut (Lapsansky Werner, Levy,
Roberts, Taylor, 135). The religious controversy was aided with the passage of the Virginia Statute for
Religious Freedom in 1786 which was written by Thomas Jefferson. This was extremely influential
legislation because it became the forerunner of the first amendment protections for religious freedom
(The Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union, Online). The first constitution of the United
States was called the Articles of Confederation. It was drafted in 1777 and adopted in 1781 by the
same Continental Congress that passed the Declaration of Independence. The scope of the Articles
include thirteen states which were called under the

On August 17th, 1917, General Jan Christian Smuts, of the Royal Flying Corps, explained the
importance of airplanes that they would not just play a role as an auxiliary force within the military,
but would create a new form of warfare in the skies:
There is absolutely no limit to the scale of its future independent war use. And the day may not be far
off when aerial operations with their devastation of enemy lands and destruction of industries and
populous centres on a vast scale may become one of the principal operations of war, to which the
older forms of military and naval operations may become secondary and subordinate.

By 1911, the old Balloon Section was separated into two Companies by the War Office, No 1
(Airship) and No 2 (Aeroplane), which caused the direct militarization of Britain s first air force, and
eventually became the Royal Flying Corps on March 13th, 1912. General David Henderson, Father of
the RAF and the man who led its formation of the RAF, changed the way that aviation was viewed
from a military perspective, by expanding the roles of aircraft to fighter interception, reconnaissance,
and tactical support. Even with these changes, the general thought of utilizing airplanes in an
aggressive manner was not rationalized alongside the current state of aviation technology.
The airplanes function as a scout was utilized expertly during World War I as trench warfare made it
extremely difficult to obtain information on foot or horseback. This aerial reconnaissance played a
major role to battlefield commanders and artillery teams, where on the ground information was used
to plan troop movement strategies or to adjust artillery fire. These advantages eventually led to the
realization that denying your enemy that same information was just as crucial as obtaining it, which
led to the first of many aerial battles. The first main function of these fighter aircrafts were to shoot
down enemy reconnaissance planes, but it was not until a Dutch inventor, Anthony Fokker, created a
synchronization gear that allowed a machine gun to fire in between the rotating

When mediocre tea leaves meet the best water, tea became the best; however, mediocre water with the
best tea leaves only results in mediocre tea. Above quotations are some representative examples of
describing the relationship between water and tea. They have shown that, the evaluation of tea as a
drink always goes along with the quality of water during the late Ming period. Tracing back to the
Tang Dynasty, drinking water has already played an important role in tea drinking; however, the
understandings of water, including the taste of water and the relationship between water and tea were
much simpler, because the flavor of water had not been stressed by tea experts yet. When Lu Yu (733

importance of the quality of water in tea drinking. In the fifth chapter of this classic, he had
categorized drinking water into three types and ranked them by their connections with tea.

A Study On Xyzprinting Da Vinci 1.0 3d Printer Essay
XYZprinting Da Vinci 1.0 3D Printer Review (Keyword: cheap 3d printer)
If you are new to the 3D printer space and are looking at buying your first cheap 3D printer, the XYZ
Printing Da Vinci 1.0 3D printer would be an excellent choice. With its plug and play capabilities
thanks to its factory calibrated settings, getting the printer up and running is easy and requires minimal
knowledge in 3D printer installation. Considering it is usually categorized as a cheap printer, the print
quality is fairly good. A spacious print area and user friendly LCD screen are an added bonus.
How the printer works and its features
At its core, the XYZ printer is not too different from other 3D printers. The quality of output will
depend on the resolution specified as well as the printing speed. Speed settings can be adjusted to
anywhere between 0.1 millimeters and 0.4 millimeters per second. The maximum printer output is 8 x
8 x 8 inches which is somewhat of an anticlimax given the fairly large size of its print platform.
The cheap 3D printer is encased and print outputs are accessible from the device s front door. This not
only makes it easier to keep the printer clean but also reduces the likelihood of operator injury. You
also don t need to worry too much for instance about little children s hands getting trapped or seared
by the printer s internal components. The printer casing also minimizes the noise pollution during
operation. Another seemingly minor but quite important safety feature is

The American Dream In Ta-Nehisi Coates Invisible Man
The American Dream and its projected image, much like the American system, is damaged. Not only
has the American Dream become a myth for most of the population, but it is rendered near impossible
for black people. Ta Nehisi Coates basically presents the Dream as a fallacy and plainly nonexistent in
his letter to his son, while the protagonist in Ellison s novel does actually carry and achieve the Dream
in a beautiful and treasured way throughout the book. Nevertheless, the American Dream in Invisible
Man would prove to be too fragile and break when in full contact with reality. Throughout his journey,
the protagonist finds motivation in himself more than anywhere else, believing in a power yielded
only by his own willpower and self determination. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Education, too, is a weapon. However, it is not hard to understand why going to school can be fearful
for black children of this nation: they are three times more likely than their white peers to be
suspended or expelled, according to U.S. Department of Education. Along with other institutions,
education is discriminatory down to the system s very roots. Ta Nehisi Coates would most probably
agree, having received nothing short of fearful education he earned growing up in Baltimore (Hagan
60). He explains that rather than learning to trust his education and educators, he, as a African
American, cannot say that [he] truly believed any of them (Coates 26). Just as any establishment,
education has been crafted and taught by the White Man, which is exactly why one simply cannot
blame Coates or the Black Man for being skeptical. While the nature of education is white, so might
be explanations given to children throughout adolescence. Coates and critics are particularly appalled
at the blatant exoneration still taking place in schools today with educators speaking of personal
responsibility in a country authored and sustained by a criminal irresponsibility (Daniels 3).
Unfortunately, being an educator does not make one credible, actually quite the opposite. Although not
explicitly, working in education does make one the inevitable embodiment of the system s manifold
values, both positive and negative, and in the eyes of those betrayed by it, someone hard to trust and
believe. As critic Wang phrased it, A black minister who gives a wonderful speech about the
importance of education turns out to be blind (Wang 1). In essence, the minister is in the wrong,
regardless of his individual experience with education. It is an institution that cheats black people. Its
educators are still predominantly white, it fuels the school to prison pipeline,

Women in the Work Force Essay
Women in the Work Force
Working in a factory which is similar to living in a third world country is difficult. Horrible,
intolerable conditions haunt workers at home and in the working environment. Women lead tough
lives because they are dictated orders, by men, in and out of the house. Many women have families to
support, so making little salaries is a strain on the family. The main issue with conditions in the work
force is that management does not have a clear understanding of what the women and the children
working are going through. Working conditions in third world countries are similar to some working
conditions in America.

In third world countries, at work there are expectations to be followed from women. According to
Stromquist, Another mechanism of social control is the use of sexual stereotypes regarding women s
abilities and skills (5). Since women are seen as being weak and feminine, their bosses who were men,
thought they could only handle doing jobs that would be too easy for men to do. Women get confused

Therapeutic Cloning And Its Controversy
Therapeutic Cloning and its Controversy The idea of finding a way to cure people of diseases with
their own cells is one that scientists, physicians, and those who are afflicted by such diseases find very
enticing. Therapeutic cloning is a process that scientists believe has the potential to achieve such goals
in the future. While therapeutic cloning brings with it a variety of potential benefits and innovations, it
also carries with it a polarizing ethical conflict that poses a strong impediment to furthering such
research and development. By realizing therapeutic cloning for its great potential benefits and world
changing implications and disregarding any ethical considerations that may deter such advancement,
the proper focus and open mindedness necessary to achieve success in the field would be achieved.
Therapeutic cloning, like all medical endeavors, includes a multitude of challenges and flaws, but no
very important medical achievements come about without extensive research and continual attempts at
success. Therapeutic cloning is a process in which the cells of one person are manipulated into
becoming the stem cells for another person through Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT). This
process involves taking oocytes, or immature female egg cells that are generated during ovulation,
incubating them in in vivo culture, and extracting the nucleus of such cells and replacing them with

Police Corruption The law enforcement role has authority and power in any society, and often that
power is combined with the ability to make discretionary decisions that may profoundly affect the
lives of the people in the community. With abundant power and authority, the temptation for
corruption occurs. Police corruption is one major type of police misconduct, and has been known
throughout history. According to Pollock (2012), police corruption does not occur just in the United

Graft
Graft occurs when officers exploit their role by accepting bribes or money in exchange for protection
(Pollock, 2012). Corrupt officers, for example, may use their uniformed authority to ask for money
from business owners or gangsters, with the implied threat of enforcement or difficulty in conducting
business as usual. Another police corruption pattern occurs when some police officers engage criminal
activities during their daily tasks until they change their career positions from police to criminal cops
(Pollock, 2012).
On Duty Use Alcohol and Drugs and Sexual Misconduct It is no secret that some officers use alcohol
and drugs while on duty. Although undercover officers are more likely to use alcohol and drugs on
duty, the on duty use of drugs and alcohol may be found in the deviant behavior of regular patrol
officers. Addiction to drugs and alcohol are potential sources of law enforcement misconduct and
corruption. It sets a bad example for public relations. It will certainly affect judgment, and possibly
lead to a greater likelihood of use of deadly force or officer involved traffic accidents. Sexual
misconduct occurs when officers use their authority as a means to receive sexual acts from citizens or
society. For example, a male officer pulls a beautiful motorist woman over and offers to forego issuing

The Education Of Women By Daniel Defoe
Education plays a great role in distinguishing women from women or men from men. In the past, it
was uncommon for a woman to be educated. With this in mind, if a lady was educated, she was held
high in the eyes of men. A woman s main role during this time was to befriend her husband and to host
her husband s dinner parties. Due to this, men loved educated women because those who are educated
could hold witty conversations. If a male is married to a female who is educated, he is held at a great
standard because his dinner parties tend to be successful. In other words, having an educated wife
during this time period is equivalent to having a trophy wife. Daniel Defoe emphasizes why women
should be educated in his essay, The Education of Women. Because Defoe bases his argument off of
many presuppositions that do not hold true today, Defoe unconvincingly posits that women should
only be educated in order to be a trophy wife to their husbands. Defoe begins his argument by stating
that the world is a civilized and Christian country (111). With regards to the Christian country, there is
a story of Adam and Eve within the Christian religion. In the story, Eve was created to be a companion
for Adam. By Defoe presupposing that the world is Christian, his underlying message is that women
are created only to be companions to men. This presupposition does not hold true today. First off,
many people do not get married in the present day world. In fact, a 2010 census declared that 20

The second Industrial Revolution was an era that created many inventions off of the first Industrial
Revolution, which included refining techniques to chemicals, electricity, transportation, and

Industrial Revolution, however, was the innovation of steel. Steel was used before the second

A Summary Of Doctor Faustus And The Tempest
The curiosity of the nature of spirits and magic, their relations to society and humanity, is an old
curiosity. The belief in magic and spirits can be traced back to the ancient Greeks, further even.
Because a Renaissance is a rebirth of classical ideas, this same curiosity wound its way back into the
literary works of the 16th and 17th centuries. A Renaissance occurs when the standard of living for the
average individual has been raised to the point where they can leave behind the Middle Ages practice
of thinking of survival and survival only. They could then turn their thinking to examining questions
of existence and study Greek and Roman works of antiquity. Works that are emblematic of the
Renaissance often include highly educated characters, lots of traveling, and are focused on individuals
and their importance as individuals. Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare were brilliant
storytellers as well as contemporaries. Their works invite their audiences to examine even further the
notions of time and individuality by exploring the worlds of unlimited possibility they have created
(Blanchard). Their works, Doctor Faustus and The Tempest, explore each of these elements. Through
the main characters of Faustus and Prospero, Marlowe and Shakespeare show the ideals and
prominent notions of the time in which they wrote.

Historical Trends Of Human Service Policy
Historical Trends in Human Service Policy In the context of human service, the current practice of
social welfare in Europe and America is a product of evolutionary change. The social welfare structure
in countries such as Canada, France, and the United States draw from English social welfare policies
that created foundational structures of current social welfare practice. The practice of social welfare
traces back to English heritage spanning back to a time when English policies operated in British
colonies (Guest, 1997). English policies such as the Elizabethan Poor Laws of 1594 and 1601 and the
1662 Law of Settlement and Removal defined human service and social welfare in England and her

In addition, the paper also analyzes the net gains and losses of these trends to the society. One of the
profound historical trends in regards to human service was the English poor laws that governed the
treatment of the poor. Following the enactment of the Elizabethan poor laws in 1601, the English
embarked on an entirely new approach of dealing with the poor in the society. While the poor laws
appeared harsh in England and colonial in English colonies, these laws defined policies that
spearheaded action in human service in regards to the treatment of the poor in society. Essentially, the
concepts, ideologies, policies, approaches, and discourse provided by the pool laws defined a human
service structure that still informs the current practice of social welfare (Carniol, 2005). Prior to the
Elizabethan poor laws, the practice of social welfare consisted of voluntary subscription to a poor
relief fund by the poor coupled with the use of harsh punishment to discourage vagabonds and beggars
(Guest, 1997). This practice related to a general assumption that paupers or rather the poor suffered
from moral deficiency that render them poor and dependent (Hasenfeld Garrow, 2012). In this regard,
the treatment of the poor was most often than not harsh. The Elizabethan poor laws however ushered
in a new dispensation that resumed full public responsibility for the poor and the destitute in the
society. The establishment of a public tax supported system aimed at providing

The Three Pieces Of Art
The three pieces of Art chosen to be discussed in this essay range in style and meaning but all seem to
tie together a symbol of power. In Sutton Hoo the wealth is shown through the purse lid and it
exquisite components it was made from, the Bayeux Tapestry shows the power of the Norman
Conquest and their leader William the conquer, and finally the immaculate Sistine Chapel with
emphasis on The Creation of Adam that shows the power of God and also the skill of Michelangelo.
The Roman Legions withdrew from Britain in about 410 CE and over the next 150 years (where
almost no records survived) the British began to gain most control and create a new social structure
and culture, this began to divide the land into a bunch of Anglo Saxon kingdoms. Sutton Hoo is a
series of 6th to 7th century burial mounds found in Suffolk, England. The largest and first excavation
began in 1939 by Basil Brown. This excavation lead to the discovery of a 90 foot long ship, and the
what is believed to be the burial site of Raedwald leader of the Wuffing Dynasty. It was in the mound
that the Purse cover was discovered. The original records of the find were destroyed in World Was II
and only a few pictures remained as evidence. From 1965 1971 the mound was excavated again along
with mounds 5,6,14,17, and 18, the archeologist discovered 39 burials most believed to between the

Identity And Identity In Shakespeare s Twelfth Night
Twelfth Night and Identity In the play Twelfth Night, Shakespeare delves into the concept of personal
identity through his exploration of the character Viola. After discovering that her twin brother is dead
following a shipwreck, Viola decides to reshape her identity in Illyria. Hiding her maiden clothes with
the sea captain, Viola takes on the name Cesario. It is important to note, Viola did not mime her twin
brother Sebastian, but instead formed her own male identity. As Viola makes new acquaintances as
Cesario, she alludes to the trickery in her appearance, I am not that I play (1.5. 175). Viola controls her
own identity and since she knows that biologically she is not a man, she can hint at her biological
identity accordingly. She shapes her identity by deciding how she wants others to view her. When
Olivia, the countess in the play, asks Viola What are you? (I.5. 204), Viola responds What I am, and
what I would, are as secret as maidenhead (I.5. 207 08). Again, Viola admits to her fraudulent identity
and that she is not what her appearance portrays her to be. Regardless of what Viola says, however, the
other characters do not recognize her chicanery. Other s perspectives also influence the concept of
forming one s personal identity. Viola may refer that she is not who she is, but the other characters in
the play have already shaped their perspectives of her. For example, to Olivia, Viola is the man she is
starting to adore. Olivia does not detect Viola s tricks because Viola is clothed as a man and so, from
her appearance, she must be one. The shaping of identity by appearance and perspective only proves
to be misleading when Viola s brother Sebastian enters the scene. Unbeknownst to Viola, Sebastian
survived the shipwreck and is now in Illyria. As Sebastian adjusts to this new land, other characters
confuse him as Viola. It is not until the two twin are on stage together that the Duke addresses the
concept of identity and perspective, One face, one voice, one habit, and two persons a natural
perspective that is and is not (V.1. 211). Before seeing the two twins together, the characters in the
play saw Viola and Sebastian as one person, Cesario. They looked alike in appearance and could pass

An Analysis Of Radiolab s Truth Warrior
The definition of truth is something that is always valid and cannot be proved invalid. Radiolab s
podcast Truth Warriors , is about people who pursue the truth. In this podcast Neil deGrasse Tyson
proves to a barista that he didn t put whip cream in his hot cocoa and Errol Morris proves whether a
photo of the Crimean War was staged or authentic. Neil believed that the barista did not put in whip
cream, but the barista insisted otherwise. To prove him wrong, Neil then made the barista put more
whip cream into his hot cocoa and the whip cream dipped once then stayed afloat on the hot cocoa
proving to the barista that he did not put in the whip cream originally. Neil did not think the truth was
that the cream sank to the bottom so he fought

Charlemagne s The Rise Of Universities
Education was crucial to the great leader Charlemagne, and he wanted his people to feel the same way
too. According to Lynn Harry Nelson in The Rise of Universities , ...he turned to the Church as the
only source of such education (Nelson). Charlemagne ordered most cathedrals and monasteries to
make a free school for every boy who showed signs of intelligence and perseverance. ...The secular
clergy, moreover, ought to lead a completely canonical life, and be educated in the episcopal palace, or
also in a monastery, with all diligence according to the discipline of the canons. They shall by no
means be permitted to wander at large, but shall live altogether apart,... (Henderson). The vision
Charlemagne had was inflicted upon the churches ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Quadrivium was thought to be of little importance, with geometry and music given a miniscule
amount of attention. Astronomy and arithmetic were actually used to help find the date of Easter, but
were then deemed useless and falling in the shadow of the Arabic way of mathematics (Rait 139).
They were taught by the lecture method, which is reading and speaking. The language the men learned
and spoke in was Latin, so before enrolling, they would have to have a sufficient amount of
knowledge of Latin. There were two types of lecture methods the men were used too; the ordinary and
cursory lectures. The cursory lectures were typically given in the afternoon by bachelors of the subject
being taught. As teaching became more important, this method was used less and less and soon the
ordinary one was used since it was taught by people who were certified in the subject being taught.
The career of a student attending the university was divided into two parts of his determination. The
first part was responsions, where in order for a student to go on to the second part, he had to satisfy a
Regent Master in Schools. The second part was determination itself, which was a ceremony that is
known as the origin of the Bachelor s degree. To pass the end of one course and to move on to the next
level of it, the men were only given one test. They

Impact Of Dna Fingerprinting
DNA profiling technologies have had a considerable impact on how forensic science and criminal
investigation have been understood, carried out, and regulated in the last 25 years. Current methods of
forensic DNA profiling (known also as DNA fingerprinting and DNA typing), based on Polymerase
Chain Reaction (PCR) amplifications of a varying number of Short Tandem Repeat (STR) loci found
at different locations on the human genome, are regularly described as constituting the gold standard
for identification in contemporary society. Prior to the implementation of PCR based extraction and
amplification methods in the 1990 s, the initial uses of DNA fingerprinting (based on Multiple and
Single Locus Probes) were largely confined to reactive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With regard to the US, where social science and STS research have, focused less on forensic databases
and more on the production of expertise and evidence in court, Jay Aronson provided a historical
account of the early practices, the scientific and legal controversies, and the ultimately successful
acceptance of forensic DNA evidence in court in 2007. Another particularity of social science and STS
research in this domain is that it has so far mostly concentrated its high end forensic technologies,
namely those which received a lot of public attention because they were new, because stakeholders in
the criminal justice system struggled to determine the parameters of scientific reliability and
admissibility, or because they were prominently featured in the media. While the use of DNA analysis
for police investigations and forensic casework dates back to the late 1980s, the second half of the
1990s marked the beginning of the quest to render DNA profiles systematically and routinely
searchable and minable by setting up centralized DNA databases in many countries around the world.
A DNA molecule is a long, twisting chain known as a double helix. DNA looks pretty complex, but it
s really made of only four nucleotides: Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine, and Thymine. These nucleotides
exist as base pairs that link together like a ladder. Adenine and Thymine always bond together as a
pair, and Cytosine and Guanine bond together as a pair.

Pfizer Internal and External Analysis
Pfizer Proposal
Summary: In terms of total sales, Pfizer is the world s largest pharmaceutical company that creates
products that serve approximately 150 million people worldwide and sales of approximately $50
billion in 2009. Formed in 1849 as a chemicals business, it has realigned itself to become the world s
leading research based pharmaceutical company and has produced drugs such as penicillin, Lipitor,
Viagra, Detrol, and Geodon and thousands of others throughout its history. Focused now on expanding
its international offerings, it looks to China, India, and Russia as high potential markets. In addition to
human pharmaceuticals, Pfizer has diversified into the animal pharmaceutical market that has
augmented sales and profitability to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second rests in Pfizer s expiring patents on several popular drugs that invite their competitors to
enter the market with similarly performing pharmaceuticals. Once these patents expire, Pfizer will
either have to extend the patent through reformulating the performance of the drug for another purpose
called ever greening , or abandon the line in the pursuit of another, more profitable product.
Regardless of what they do in terms of their own product offerings, generic imitations of their
products will enter the market, diluting the profitability of the drug and forcing reliance on the sales of
other existing products to make up the loss.
Opportunities for Pfizer exist in two areas, first being the restructuring into a more lean and
competitive organization and second is the penetration into emerging markets such as China and India
who are now more able to purchase their products. With sales of approximately $50 billion per year,
Pfizer has the opportunity to streamline its operations, cut costs, and add flexibility to the
organization. If successful in this, they can better realize their profits and invest that money into future
competitive products for the market.
Penetration into developing markets is the second opportunity identified, allowing Pfizer to

Midterm Ritual Analysis By Emile Durkheim, Arnold Van...
Midterm Ritual Analysis In order to fulfill an individual s constitutional right to a trial overseen by a
jury of his or her peers, the process of juror selection is repeated every day in courtrooms around the
country. The process is not only vital to the American justice system as a whole; for the prospective
juror it is also a defining feature of their U.S. citizenship. Juror selection and the accompanying voir
dire, when examined for more than its procedural parts, reveals itself to be more complex than a set of
ordinary practices. The frameworks established by Emile Durkheim, Arnold Van Gennep, and Victor
Turner help to separate the ritual elements present in jury duty from aspects that are more
representative of technological routine .
British structural functionalist Arnold Van Gennep was studying in circumstances very different from
the modern moment. Still, Van Gennep s analysis offers a useful framework for understanding the
stages of ritual. If one is willing to see jury duty as a rite of passage, a marker of adulthood within
American society, then one can begin to see preliminal, liminal, and postliminal rites that make up its
composition (Van Gennep 1960 p. 11). This division of rites can be seen in the treatment of space
within the courtroom. When a prospective juror begins jury service, they partake in the pivoting that
separates them from the profane world and temporarily places them in the realm of the sacred (Van
Gennep 1960 p. 12). They are identified

  • 3. literature in America Essay When I think of America, I think of freedom. We live in a country where we can do what we choose. We can express our opinions and live our own lives. Individuals can form their own individual beliefs and they can do what they want and pursue what they wish. They can play basketball, go to school, get a job, have a family, buy a house, or go to church. We are free. We have opportunity to be whatever we want to make ourselves. When you ask, what is an American? I find it no different to ask, what is freedom? America and freedom are intertwined and this relationship is evident in American literature. The notion of freedom and everything relating to freedom unites all of the American literature we have read. In Twain s Huckleberry Finn, Huck ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Self Reliance, Emerson explains that our freedom to choose and our ability to think what we want to think define what America is. I believe it is characteristic of Americans to strive for what they think is right. In Poe s the House of Usher, Usher decided to bury his sister alive. I think this story can relate to us today. Many people would say that America is known for persevering through rough times. I d say the last few years have been a rough time for America, from 9/11 to now the war in Iraq. Sometimes situations may seem unbeatable, like being trapped in a coffin, but if you fight hard enough, like we are against the terrorists and in Iraq, you can overcome anything. American s can overcome anything. Usher s sister was buried alive and finally broke from the coffin after a week of struggle. Also, many of the authors we have studied describe nature in riveting detail. To them and to me, our beautiful nature represents something more then just what you see with your eye it represents America s freedom. In Emerson s Nature, Thorpe s The Big Bear of Arkansas, Twain s Huckleberry Finn, Bryant s Thanatopsis, and Edwards Shadows of Divine Things, we see an apparent love and lust of nature by the authors. The great aspects of nature represent the great aspects of America freedom. The mountains and trees scatter in nature in pure harmony just like the American people live freely in America. The authors had a fascination ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. David Hume Argument For Motivation Many philosophical pieces and writers have attempted, throughout history, to explain motivation and the factors which lead to motivation. A main topic among discussions of motivation is the separation between sole belief, and action upon that belief and what stimulates actions based on such beliefs. David Hume, a philosopher from The Age of Enlightenment, proposed his understanding and argument for motivation, which has been coined as: The Humean Theory of Motivation. According to The Humean Theory of Motivation, reasons are a necessary motivating factors of acting on a belief. He believes that motivation is not a sole matter of moral judgments, but that beliefs only influence behavior and action in combination with emotional states. These ... Specifically, some argue that The Humean Theory of Motivation is the idea that The Humean Theory of Motivation is objectively not normative(Hubin, 1999), or not directly stating what ought, or what ought not be. Another, more complex, argument against The Humean Theory of Motivation is written in G.F. Scheuler s The Humean Theory of Motivation Rejected, He explains that, while desires are surely present in reasoning, desires are not solely applicable, and do not have a sole force on motivation. He states that reasoning is done with representations of things, not the things themselves, even when the things being represented are one s own desires(Schueler, 2009). In other words, Scheuler believes that if an individual is is reasoning how to satisfy her desires in accordance to desire belief based reasoning, that the reason is causing the motivation, rather than the desire itself. He is stating that when one reasons with desire they are representing the desires rather than only being focused on the desire itself(Schueler, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Michael Pollan Agriculture With concerns of climate change on the rise, a growing population, and a fear of being unable to maintain water demands many of our daily practices are coming into question. Agriculture is not immune to the criticisms, particularly with regard to fossil fuels. In the mid 1900s farming operations started to exploit fertilizers and land to increase the yield of inexpensive grains. Such practices require fossil fuels in immense quantities through fertilizers, pesticides, and transportation. However, passionate debates often occur over the importance and where to go from here. Michael Pollan, Katherine Mangu Ward, and the National Chicken Council vary widely in their opinions but it is likely that no one direction is feasible. Pollan believes that industrial ... Mangu Ward believes that Pollan s idealistic view of transformed American and world agriculture is suited only for the luxury classes. It is improbable to expect the masses to spend exurbanite amounts of money on organic local produce. This is an understandable concern. The lack of labor required to supply the country with enough foodstuffs and the potential loss of choices concern the NCC. The NCC agrees that the system is not perfect but nor is a local supply chain which would be unable to provide consumers nonnative fruits and vegetables. With regard to the rearing of chickens the council asserts that there is no evidence of antibiotic resistance, the flocks are kept healthy and safe, and inexpensive. Local sustainable methods are assumed to be impractical for national production, requiring vast swaths of land and excessive carbon emissions. Not to mention the expenses. • 7. Literary Analysis Of Medea Medea It was very hard to be a women of the time Medea was written in. Women had to buy husbands and she alone has to make the marriage work or it is her fault the marriage falls apart. Men could leave their wives if they wished . Medea is set in a time that women were oppressed and had little to no rights. Medea did everything she did because She was mentally ill, very isolated and a single mother, but Jason as a man of that time did have a right to leave her. Medea was mentally ill, and we can see this in the Euripides play Medea in lines 791 795. I weep to think of the deed I have to do Next after that; for I shall kill my own children. This explains that Medea wanting revenge so bad would go to such lengths as to kill her own children. She also is very depressed and angry when Jason first leaves her. She lies without food and gives herself up to suffering, Wasting away every moment of the day in tears. The illness Medea has is Clinical Depression. The website that had all the symptoms that medea has was MayoClinic. The most common signs of Clinical Depression are feelings of sadness/ hopefulness Medea shows this sign when she says Ah, lost in my sufferings, I wish, I wish I might die. He was born on February 13th, 1766, in Surrey, England, and was the sixth of seven children. Malthus attended Cambridge in 1784 and graduated four years later with honors in mathematics. In 1789, Malthus became a deacon in the Church of England and curate of Okewood Chapel in Surrey. In 1798, he anonymously published his renowned work An Essay on the Principle of Population as it affects the Future Improvement of Society, with Remarks on the Speculations of Mr. Godwin, M. Condorcet, and other Writers. In 1803, Malthus published a second, much enlarged edition of the population essay. A year later, Malthus married Harriet Eckersall. In 1821, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Malthus was an economic pessimist to those who disagreed with him and a realist to his followers. He viewed poverty as something that was inevitable because, If the only check to population is misery, the result of any improvement is ultimately to enable a larger population than before to live in misery, so that resource improvement actually increases the sum of misery and that betterment of the lot of mankind is impossible without stern limits on reproduction. This means that there is overpopulation, and the natural check of misery (poverty) is coming into effect in order to balance out overpopulation. However, by trying to help poverty, we are (according to Malthus) making the situation worse. In the short run, there seems to be an improvement because those poor people are better off and can do well. This situation would lead to a larger population than before, and therefore would lead to a greater number of people becoming impoverished. He therefore shunned charities and proposed that by leaving poverty alone, and by moral restraint and vice (contraception and population control); the situation would take care of itself. If the only check to population is misery, the population will grow until it is miserable enough to check its growth. In the last two hundred years, Malthus Essay has sparked controversy and made people aware of population growth. In every generation, there have been Malthusians who caused panic among people. This blog post is going to focus on this hypothesis. Language is not thought Before anything else, we need to establish one thing: language is not thought, just as well that heaven is not hell. One might say that he is thinking using words and sentences, but this is not the case. I, for one, had always believed that I think using words. But this article from Science 2.0 let me know that thoughts are not words and vice versa. Although he was a bit emotional, he moved on. Others also advocated a similar statement, But nearly everyone I ve spoke with, Adnan s friends and teachers say he took the breakup like anyone would. A Brief History of Antibiotics, Antibiotic Resistance, and Antibiotic Alternatives Antibiotic Resistance and Alternatives Antibiotics have been commonly, though mistakenly, thought of as the ultimate cure, for almost all illness, for over half a century now. However, the intended use of antibiotics is for the treatment of bacterial infections and diseases. Viruses or fungi related illnesses will not be affected by antibiotics. This misunderstanding of the use of antibiotics has led to overuse, or the misuse, of antibiotics, in a wide range of countries worldwide. (Bunyard) S. aureus caused serious illnesses, such as pneumonia, endocarditis, osteomylitis, and toxic shock syndrome. (Ed. Bonomo and Ed. By 1946, in one hospital, 14% of the strains isolated from patients had gained such resistance. In 1949, the U.S. produced penicillin and streptomycin at the rate of 6.5 tons per month. By definition, Surface tension is the property of the surface of a liquid that allows it to resist an external force, due to the cohesive nature of its molecules (USGS). Molecules in a drop of water cling to each other. This is why they can stay together as they fall through the air (Wick 9). In addition, water molecules at the surface of a liquid form stronger bonds (USGS). This is because they have no adjacent molecules on top of them so they exert more powerful forces to molecules on and below the surface of a liquid (USGS). For example, water striders can glide on the surface of water because their mass is not strong enough to break the surface tension (USGS). The dependent variable in this experiment was, which liquid stayed on the penny best. The independent variable was the different chemicals used. Water droplets form spheres because they are pulled by the cohesive forces of the surface layer (USGS). A drop of water in its smallest size is a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After the Declaration of Independence was written in 1776, the country was challenged with the problem of creating a process for governing the states. The Patriots were concerned about forming a centralized Parliament, like in Britain, because power was abused by the wealthy. Initially, the vision was to give states governing authority and leave minimal power to a national Union. But as the years passed and conflicts arose, there was a need to create a national government using the U.S Constitution as the blueprint. The focus of the paper is to learn what led to the formation of the U.S. Constitution. First, it s important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main disagreement was deciding who had the right to vote. Democratic Patriots wanted equal rights for all free men, even those who were poor. In most states, conservatives disagreed and felt strongly that poor men should not vote because their vote would confound and destroy all distinctions and prostrate all ranks to the common level (Lapsansky, 134). As the debate lingered, most free men qualified to vote because they owned farms, but slaves and women were not given voting rights. Another debate centered on religious freedom. Most states supported freedom of religion in their constitution, and with time religious liberty, without the interference of the state, became common from state to state with the exception of Massachusetts and Connecticut (Lapsansky Werner, Levy, Roberts, Taylor, 135). The religious controversy was aided with the passage of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom in 1786 which was written by Thomas Jefferson. This was extremely influential legislation because it became the forerunner of the first amendment protections for religious freedom (The Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union, Online). On August 17th, 1917, General Jan Christian Smuts, of the Royal Flying Corps, explained the importance of airplanes that they would not just play a role as an auxiliary force within the military, but would create a new form of warfare in the skies: There is absolutely no limit to the scale of its future independent war use. And the day may not be far off when aerial operations with their devastation of enemy lands and destruction of industries and populous centres on a vast scale may become one of the principal operations of war, to which the older forms of military and naval operations may become secondary and subordinate. General David Henderson, Father of the RAF and the man who led its formation of the RAF, changed the way that aviation was viewed from a military perspective, by expanding the roles of aircraft to fighter interception, reconnaissance, and tactical support. Even with these changes, the general thought of utilizing airplanes in an aggressive manner was not rationalized alongside the current state of aviation technology. The airplanes function as a scout was utilized expertly during World War I as trench warfare made it extremely difficult to obtain information on foot or horseback. This aerial reconnaissance played a major role to battlefield commanders and artillery teams, where on the ground information was used to plan troop movement strategies or to adjust artillery fire. These advantages eventually led to the realization that denying your enemy that same information was just as crucial as obtaining it, which led to the first of many aerial battles. The first main function of these fighter aircrafts were to shoot down enemy reconnaissance planes, but it was not until a Dutch inventor, Anthony Fokker, created a synchronization gear that allowed a machine gun to fire in between the rotating ... Tea Drinking During The Late Ming Period Water tasting has become a special skill among the tea drinkers during the Ming era, and this ability was utilized by many scholar officials to demonstrate their sensual sensitivity and the sophistication of their taste. In the late Ming period, the importance of water choice was still emphasized by tea experts in their tea books and essays. On one hand, good water can help diffusing the scent of tea; on the other hand, unsuitable and low quality water would destroy the taste and smell of tea, or would be even harmful to drinkers health. With its plug and play capabilities thanks to its factory calibrated settings, getting the printer up and running is easy and requires minimal knowledge in 3D printer installation. Considering it is usually categorized as a cheap printer, the print quality is fairly good. A spacious print area and user friendly LCD screen are an added bonus. Ta Nehisi Coates would most probably agree, having received nothing short of fearful education he earned growing up in Baltimore (Hagan 60). He explains that rather than learning to trust his education and educators, he, as a African American, cannot say that [he] truly believed any of them (Coates 26). Just as any establishment, education has been crafted and taught by the White Man, which is exactly why one simply cannot blame Coates or the Black Man for being skeptical. While the nature of education is white, so might be explanations given to children throughout adolescence. Coates and critics are particularly appalled at the blatant exoneration still taking place in schools today with educators speaking of personal responsibility in a country authored and sustained by a criminal irresponsibility (Daniels 3). Unfortunately, being an educator does not make one credible, actually quite the opposite. Although not explicitly, working in education does make one the inevitable embodiment of the system s manifold values, both positive and negative, and in the eyes of those betrayed by it, someone hard to trust and believe. • 26. The Education Of Women By Daniel Defoe Education plays a great role in distinguishing women from women or men from men. In the past, it was uncommon for a woman to be educated. With this in mind, if a lady was educated, she was held high in the eyes of men. A woman s main role during this time was to befriend her husband and to host her husband s dinner parties. Due to this, men loved educated women because those who are educated could hold witty conversations. If a male is married to a female who is educated, he is held at a great standard because his dinner parties tend to be successful. In other words, having an educated wife during this time period is equivalent to having a trophy wife. Daniel Defoe emphasizes why women should be educated in his essay, The Education of Women. Because Defoe bases his argument off of many presuppositions that do not hold true today, Defoe unconvincingly posits that women should only be educated in order to be a trophy wife to their husbands. Defoe begins his argument by stating that the world is a civilized and Christian country (111). With regards to the Christian country, there is a story of Adam and Eve within the Christian religion. In the story, Eve was created to be a companion for Adam. By Defoe presupposing that the world is Christian, his underlying message is that women are created only to be companions to men. This presupposition does not hold true today. First off, many people do not get married in the present day world. In fact, a 2010 census declared that 20 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. Identity And Identity In Shakespeare s Twelfth Night Twelfth Night and Identity In the play Twelfth Night, Shakespeare delves into the concept of personal identity through his exploration of the character Viola. After discovering that her twin brother is dead following a shipwreck, Viola decides to reshape her identity in Illyria. Hiding her maiden clothes with the sea captain, Viola takes on the name Cesario. It is important to note, Viola did not mime her twin brother Sebastian, but instead formed her own male identity. As Viola makes new acquaintances as Cesario, she alludes to the trickery in her appearance, I am not that I play (1.5. 175). Viola controls her own identity and since she knows that biologically she is not a man, she can hint at her biological identity accordingly. She shapes her identity by deciding how she wants others to view her. When Olivia, the countess in the play, asks Viola What are you? (I.5. 204), Viola responds What I am, and what I would, are as secret as maidenhead (I.5. 207 08). Again, Viola admits to her fraudulent identity and that she is not what her appearance portrays her to be. Regardless of what Viola says, however, the other characters do not recognize her chicanery. Other s perspectives also influence the concept of forming one s personal identity. Viola may refer that she is not who she is, but the other characters in the play have already shaped their perspectives of her. For example, to Olivia, Viola is the man she is starting to adore. Olivia does not detect Viola s tricks because Viola is clothed as a man and so, from her appearance, she must be one. The shaping of identity by appearance and perspective only proves to be misleading when Viola s brother Sebastian enters the scene. Unbeknownst to Viola, Sebastian survived the shipwreck and is now in Illyria. As Sebastian adjusts to this new land, other characters confuse him as Viola. It is not until the two twin are on stage together that the Duke addresses the concept of identity and perspective, One face, one voice, one habit, and two persons a natural perspective that is and is not (V.1. 211). Before seeing the two twins together, the characters in the play saw Viola and Sebastian as one person, Cesario. They looked alike in appearance and could pass ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Impact Of Dna Fingerprinting DNA profiling technologies have had a considerable impact on how forensic science and criminal investigation have been understood, carried out, and regulated in the last 25 years. Current methods of forensic DNA profiling (known also as DNA fingerprinting and DNA typing), based on Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) amplifications of a varying number of Short Tandem Repeat (STR) loci found at different locations on the human genome, are regularly described as constituting the gold standard for identification in contemporary society. Prior to the implementation of PCR based extraction and amplification methods in the 1990 s, the initial uses of DNA fingerprinting (based on Multiple and Single Locus Probes) were largely confined to reactive ... With regard to the US, where social science and STS research have, focused less on forensic databases and more on the production of expertise and evidence in court, Jay Aronson provided a historical account of the early practices, the scientific and legal controversies, and the ultimately successful acceptance of forensic DNA evidence in court in 2007. Another particularity of social science and STS research in this domain is that it has so far mostly concentrated its high end forensic technologies, namely those which received a lot of public attention because they were new, because stakeholders in the criminal justice system struggled to determine the parameters of scientific reliability and admissibility, or because they were prominently featured in the media. While the use of DNA analysis for police investigations and forensic casework dates back to the late 1980s, the second half of the 1990s marked the beginning of the quest to render DNA profiles systematically and routinely searchable and minable by setting up centralized DNA databases in many countries around the world. A DNA molecule is a long, twisting chain known as a double helix. DNA looks pretty complex, but it s really made of only four nucleotides: Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine, and Thymine. These nucleotides exist as base pairs that link together like a ladder. Adenine and Thymine always bond together as a pair, and Cytosine and Guanine bond together as a pair. ... Once these patents expire, Pfizer will either have to extend the patent through reformulating the performance of the drug for another purpose called ever greening , or abandon the line in the pursuit of another, more profitable product. Regardless of what they do in terms of their own product offerings, generic imitations of their products will enter the market, diluting the profitability of the drug and forcing reliance on the sales of other existing products to make up the loss. Opportunities for Pfizer exist in two areas, first being the restructuring into a more lean and competitive organization and second is the penetration into emerging markets such as China and India who are now more able to purchase their products. With sales of approximately $50 billion per year, Pfizer has the opportunity to streamline its operations, cut costs, and add flexibility to the organization. • 48. Midterm Ritual Analysis By Emile Durkheim, Arnold Van... Midterm Ritual Analysis In order to fulfill an individual s constitutional right to a trial overseen by a jury of his or her peers, the process of juror selection is repeated every day in courtrooms around the country. The process is not only vital to the American justice system as a whole; for the prospective juror it is also a defining feature of their U.S. citizenship. Juror selection and the accompanying voir dire, when examined for more than its procedural parts, reveals itself to be more complex than a set of ordinary practices. The frameworks established by Emile Durkheim, Arnold Van Gennep, and Victor Turner help to separate the ritual elements present in jury duty from aspects that are more representative of technological routine . British structural functionalist Arnold Van Gennep was studying in circumstances very different from the modern moment. Still, Van Gennep s analysis offers a useful framework for understanding the stages of ritual. If one is willing to see jury duty as a rite of passage, a marker of adulthood within American society, then one can begin to see preliminal, liminal, and postliminal rites that make up its composition (Van Gennep 1960 p. 11). This division of rites can be seen in the treatment of space within the courtroom. When a prospective juror begins jury service, they partake in the pivoting that separates them from the profane world and temporarily places them in the realm of the sacred (Van Gennep 1960 p. 12).
