GENERATION OF COMPUTER
• As the time passed, the device of more suitable and reliable
machine was need which could perform our work more quickly.
• During this time in the year 1946, the first successful electronic
computer called ENIAC (Electronic numerical integrator and
computer/calculator) was developed.
• It was the starting point of the current generation of the computer
GENERATION OF COMPUTER INVENTION
FIRST VACUUM TUBE
SECOND TRANSISTOR
THIRD IC’S
FOURTH MICROPROCESSOR
FIFTH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
First Generation Of Computer
• Time Period : 1946-1959
• Technology : Vacuum tube
• Size : Very large
• Processing : Very slow
Characterized By :
Magnetic Drums(memory)
Difficult to program
Used machine language
Taking up entire room
1
Second Generation Of Computer
• Time Period : 1959-1965
• Technology : Transistors
• Size : Smaller
• Processing : Faster
Characterized By :
Magnetic cores
Magnetic disk
Punch card
Easier to program
2
Third Generation Of Computer
• Time Period : 1965-1971
• Technology : IC’s (Integrated circuits)
• Size : Smaller as compare to 2nd generation
• Processing : Faster then 2nd generation
Characterized By :
Mini computer accessible by
multiple users from remote
terminals
3
Fourth Generation Of Computer
• Time Period : 1971- Present
• Technology : Microprocessors
• Size : Very small size
• Processing : One million /ps (Best speed to read instructions)
Characterized By:
Microprocessor contains thousands of IC’s
More powerful and reliable from previous
Use fan for heat discharge
Portable computers
4
Fifth Generation Of Computer
• Time period : future
• Technology :AI (Artificial Intelligence),
Nano technology
They are still in development
The use of parallel processing and
superconductors is helping to make
artificial intelligence a reality
