The students at the 12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens invited members from the Counselling Centre for Women of Peristeri to discuss gender-based violence. The counselors presented statistics on gender-based violence and shared real stories of abused women. They discussed different types of gender-based violence, including in relationships with peers, partners, family and the community. The counselors noted that gender-based violence is increasing in Greece and their region of Peristeri during the economic crisis. Victims of violence are often too afraid or ashamed to report the abuse.

He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2. • Gender-based violence undermines the health, dignity,
security and autonomy of its victims, who are most often
women.
• Since we wanted to learn more on this issue we invited at
our school members from the Counselling Centre for
Women of Peristeri
12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens
3. OUR DISCUSSION WITHSCIENTISTS FROM THE
COUNSELLINGCENTREFOR WOMENOFPERISTERI
On the 20th of January three staff members of the
Counselling Centre came to our school.
The group was consisted of a psychologist, a
lawyer and a social worker.
First, they presented to us a power point
introducing some basic aspects of this
phenomenon.
Than, they gave us some photocopies with
examples and real stories of abused women.
We made our points and discussed on the
examples we were given.
12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens
4. Continuing, we had the opportunity to ask them some
questions about our subject.
We also had the chance to learn the frequency and the
extend of this issue in our region, Peristeri.
Generally, it was a fruitful experience for us.
12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens
11. • In each and every country, the problem of bullying is
faced.
• Most of them are related to:
Gender (when calling a boy gay)
Sexual abuse (unpleasant touch)
Physical abuse (slap, punch)
Social exclusion (reject from social group,
isolation)
• It can also be carried out via SMS, email or even
Facebook
RELATIONSHIPS WITH COEVALS
12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens
12. • All relationships have
pleasant and unpleasant
moments and sometimes
couples have arguments.
• However, this event might
take extreme dimensions,
including:
RELATIONSHIPS WITH PARTNERS
12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens
13. Psychological abuse (Isolation, verbal violence)
Physical abuse (Slap, punch)
Sexual abuse (Rape)
Financial abuse (Withholding of income)
• It can be noticed, not only in permanent
relationships, but also on a date/ new relationship.
12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens
14. Another type of abuse is beheld
in families.
Parents are not aware of the
children watching the event or
the effect this has on them.
But, this is not true. It can be
fatal both for their mental health
and their future relationships.
RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN FAMILY
12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens
15. Other members of family, colleagues or even strangers
might be abusers of gender violence.
Examples of this abuse are numerous, such
as sexual abuse or differentiation in work place
(women are not paid the same
amount of money as men for the
exact work)
RELATIONSHIPS IN COMMUNITY
12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens
16. Who are the victims of gendered violence?
The gender-based violence is a common phenomenon, which can appear
everywhere.
The victims are usually women. Mainly are women who have economical
problems or they do not have any particular education. These women are
more likely to suffer gender violence because either they think it is
something normal or they can’t find a way to escape this stressful situation.
12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens
17. Also, the inequalities
between women and men
in society, often result for
the women to feel less
important and, thus, more
vulnerable to abuse and
exploitation
12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens
18. WHAT IS THE EXTENT OF
GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE?
12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens
19. An international research was conducted in Greece,
Cyprus, Malta, Lithuania and Latvia.
1850 girls participated in it ,ages 18-24.
The research showed that 10-16% of the girls
reported that while on dates they had some kind of
unwanted sexual experience, including rape or an
attempt of it.
International research
12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens
20. • It is calculated that 1/5 and 1/4 of all
European women have gone under
physical violence, at least once, during
their adult life and over 1/10 have been
sexually assaulted in a violent way.
12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens
21. IN ITALY
• In Italy, it is estimated that 32% of women ages
16-70 (years old) have been through physical
or sexual violence from a man in their lifetime.
The younger women, the ones between the
ages of 16 and 24, are more likely to become
victims of violence.
12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens
22. • In a survey that 460 Greek teenage girls (15-21
years old) took part in, almost 1 out of 2 reported
that she had undergone some form of violence
(physical, psychological or sexual) from her partner
either in her current or a past relationship.
Violent incidents in Greece
12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens
23. This phenomenon is gradually being increased in Greece and
in our region as well.
According to the information from the Counselling Centre for
Women of Peristeri the violent incidents against women tend to
increase in numbers during the economic crisis.
Gendered violence in our region- Peristeri
12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens
24. IN OUR REGION - PERISTERI
• Also, they are ranging from verbal or psychological
violence to heavy violence such as:
injuries with very sharp objects, like
knives
extreme wife battering.
12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens
25. DO WOMEN IMPEACH EASILY THE
VIOLENCE THEY EXPERIENCE ? WHY?
• Usually women do not want to impeach the violence they
experience. There are many reasons for that:
• First of all they may be scared if the abuser react worse
and generally they are afraid that the situation will get
worse .
• Second, they might be ashamed for being victims of
abuse. Sometimes the broad family discourages women
from impeaching violence.
12th Gymnasium of Peristeri, Athens
26. • Third, they might think that
they cause this problem so,
they feel guilty and
responsible for the violence
they suffer.
• End, in some cases women
can’t even identify the
violence against them,
because due to family or
cultural reasons, they
consider such violent
behaviour normal and as it
should be.
