women are generally expected to
be strong , bold and aggressive.

• Hindu wedding blessing given amongst Indian
women is “May you be the mother of a
hundred sons”. (Indian culture the gender
roles are quite specific and very traditional).
• Woman must never be independent in life
always depend on her parent are husband.
• Gender roles started right after the birth of
boys and girls.
CONTINUE….
9
• Boys are showered in love and
affection and taught to be
outgoing, receive better
healthcare and are respected.
• Girls are encouraged to be more
introverted and be homebodies.
• The constitution also allows the
state to practice measure of
positive discrimination in favour
of women through legislation and
policies.
10
• Culture is what’s shared by a large group and
transmitted across generations i.e. ideas,
attitudes, behaviors and traditions.
• See the shaping power of culture in ideas
about how men and women should behave,
dress and interact within the context of the

• Gender roles can change over time within

* Father staying in home with kids and
mom working may have been ridiculed
in 1950s. But not considered odd today.
More women are entering formerly male
dominated occupations.

Media and gender refers to the relationship
between media and gender, and how gender is
represented within the platforms

radio, television, advertisement, social media
and video games.
GENDER ROLES IN SOCIETY: MEDIA
13
• According to the media, the kind of
woman women want to be is one
that is:
“caring, emotional, home loving…
guided above all by their feelings”.
• Often women are depicted as “
willing and eager to serve men”.
• A “good” woman is submissive
,sensitive and domesticated.
CONTINUE…..
14
• “A woman who stands up herself is no longer
a woman”. She is often viewed masculine and
unappealing to men.
• The media present two lifestyles choices of
woman by glorifying a good, obedient
woman and make bad .
• Men are often portrayed commanding and
authoritative. They have no fear, and never
show the weakness.
CONTINUE…
15
• For examples: stereotype are cartoon
superheroes such as superman, and
spiderman, super-powered men fighting
safety of helpless community.
• Men also tend to have more important
speaking roles, while women are “rarely
heard”.
• Men are the decision makers and
leaders.The word is final.
CONTINUE…
16
The media has improved greatly in the
past few years women are slowly gaining
leading roles. And it is now uncommon to
see men and women as equal working
alongside each other in equally. Women
and men are still misrepresented
