Participant observation
How do we really find out about the way of life of a group of people? One way is to join them to
participate in their daily activities amp; observe what they say and do. This research method is known
as participant observation. It was used by John Howard Griffin (1960) a white journalist who dyed his
skin black in order to discover what it was like to live as black man in the southern states of America
in the late 1950 s. It was used by the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski who spent many years
studying the Trobriand Islanders of New Guinea. He observed the most intimate details of ... Show

This happened in Judith Okely s (1983) study of traveller gypsies. Entry was a long and difficult
process until she gained the friendship and trust of a family who had recently suffered a tragic death.
The sympathetic and understanding relationship she developed with members of this family provided
entry to rest of the group.
Conducting research
Looking and listening Participant observation involves looking and listening. The general rule is to go
with the flow rather than forcing the pace and influencing peoples behaviour. Since the aim is to
observe people in their normal setting, the research must not disturb that setting. Blending into the
background is usually recommended, though this is not always possible. For example, a participant
observer in a classroom can stand out like a sore thumb. This can result in an artificial lesson.
However, its surprising how soon he or she becomes invisible and taken for granted. In his study of a
secondary school, Walford (1933) found that it took four weeks of observation before any class
misbehaved. However, the situation changed rapidly after this time and Walford was soon watching
mock wrestling and chairs flying around the classroom!
Asking Questions Watching and listening are not always adequate for the researcher s purposes.
Sometimes a participant observer must take a more active role in order to obtain information. This
usually involves asking questions. In such cases, the diving line

Water, glittering, as the sun throws sparks across the creased, sapphire expanse. Flashes of the lullaby
of rising and falling waves through the trees. Golden sands shimmering from across the lake. Our
soreness melted as we drove into Windhaven, the group of cabins where our family stays during the
weeklong annual family reunion. We got out of the car and breathed in the fresh, lake air laced with
nonchalance and the feeling and freedom of summer. My family (my mom, dad, brother, and I) drive
up to Mears, Michigan every year for a weeklong family reunion on my mom s side. The days are
always filled with laughter and games, whether we re playing The Settlers of Catan or a heated soccer
match. My uncles always bring strange, unheard of games like Kubb or fowling, and they teach us all
how to play them. Our entire family eats dinner together every night, and we play games with the
entire family after dinner. However, the highlight of our family reunion is the slide. Many years ago,
maybe even before I was born, a few of my uncles decided that it would be really cool if they built a

First hand account We Were Soldiers Once...and Young: Ia Drang The Battle That Changed the War in
Vietnam, by Joseph Galloway, tells the story of the courage and hard fighting that occurred in that
valley. This book was made even more popular by the film made after it, We Were Soldiers. A
comparison of leadership, at any time, is difficult to conduct without first hand knowledge. However,
relatable events and occurrences do exist. The process of providing fire support is one that requires a
streamlined process, quick thinking individuals, and ready assets. The fire support process of today is
considerably more streamlined and structured than that of the Vietnam War. The Army s lessons
learned in places like Ia Drang have paved the way for the tactics, techniques, and procedures used
today. However, while the process and assets may be more streamlined and abundant, today s
leadership pales in comparison. A streamlined process is worth nothing if the gun crews are slow, the
Fire Direction Center doesn t check for safety concerns, and the Fires Effects and Coordination Cell
fails to deconflict. Even with the lessons learned, firing incidents still occur in alarming numbers.
From the transposing of grid coordinates, to the mixing up of target and friendly locations, many of
today s artillerymen do not exemplify the high standards of tactical and technical competency

Out of state college tuition is immensely more expensive than in state tuition. Besides where you go, it
depends on your intended career. If you decide to be a doctor, your schooling will cost much more
than that of a police officer. Doctors will be in college for a much longer period than most other
majors, and this drives up the amount they have to spend to get that education. So, the cost of college
is totally dependent on where you go to school and what career you are pursuing.
For the sake of this paper, I will use my own career path as an example. I am going to become a

his views on life itself. Some of these songs turned out to be big hits, and certainly made his listeners

what they felt, especially in the The River . Dystopia Dystopia is considered to be an imaginary place

Literary Analysis Of A Good Man Is Hard To Find
Touched by Grace the Mystery of Salvation:
Discovering the Deeper Meaning of A Good Man Is Hard to Find
Writers use literary elements, such as plot, setting, characters, and mood as a foundation in their
works. By engaging and guiding the reader with literary techniques like simile, foreshadowing, and
irony, the author invokes the reader to ask questions in order to discover the significance of the
message. Author Flannery O Connor opens the Gothic tale, A Good Man Is Hard to Find, as a family
of six prepares to leave on a road trip to Florida where an escaped murder known as The Misfit is at
large. The author introduces the family: the grandmother, her son Baily, his young wife, the baby, their
son John Wesley, their daughter June Star, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her allusion to Timothy, Georgia, the town in which the family stops for dinner, leads us to I Timothy
in the Bible. This book in the Bible details the description of how a Christian should live. Up until
now, the grandmother has lived a shallow life full of superficial values. The Misfit, not knowing God,
makes an emotional statement that if he had known God; his life may have been different. For the first
time, the grandmother stops thinking of herself and reaches out to console The Misfit. Nevertheless,
three final shots ring out, and the grandmother lays in a pool of blood. Author Flannery O Connor
leaves the reader with this final statement from The Misfit: She would have been a good woman...if it
had been someone there to shoot her every minute of her life (418). The grandmother would have been
a better person had she lived every moment as her last or with a gun to her head. In her last fleeting
moments, the grandmother, touched by grace, was filled with love and understanding as she
acknowledges the errors of her ways. Clemson University s Doctor Hallman Bryant

The Role Of Radical Feminism In The United States
Women have fought oppression in the past, and are still considered fighting today. Feminism has
become very popular in the United States. Equality of the sexes has been accomplished in many areas,
yet equality is only the beginning for radical feminists in the Untied States. The idea of equality of the
sexes has been twisted into the fantasy of women as the dominant gender.
Feminism is defined as the belief of equality among the sexes, socially, politically, and economically.
The idea of feminism originated as early as 18th century France, and continued to grow with women s
public actions to acquire individual liberties in the 19th and 20th Centuries (The Roots Of The Word
Feminism ). For areas such as the Middle East, China, and France, feminism was a large rigorous
battle. The United States did not join the bandwagon until women fully displayed it in 1848, fighting
for their right to vote.Still active today, feminists wish to end the concept of men being the dominate
gender. However, feminism, though needed in certain areas, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Call Of The Wild
Jack London, one of the most world renowned authors in history, wrote a book called The Call of the
Wild and a short story called To Build a Fire. These two writing pieces share similar attitudes and
setting. In addition, their endings and travel style are much different. The Call of the Wild and To
Build a Fire have these two similarities and two differences that add a lot of meaning to each story.
The four parts of setting in these stories are very similar. On page 15 in The Call of the Wild it says
Buck s feet sank into white mushy something very like mud. Here, Buck experiences snow for the first
time, and snow is a huge part of the physical setting in this story. In To Build a Fire on page 1 it says,
The Yukon lay a mile wide and hidden under three feet of ice. The main character in To Build a Fire
was near the Yukon ice covered river, which is freezing cold. These are just part of the physical
setting, which defines Buck as well as the society (social setting) of the Yukon and creates their harsh
way of life up in the Northland. In a nutshell, the setting of these two stories dictates their plot as well
as how these characters react to the immense challenges that are presented to them by their harsh
landscape, the Yukon. The attitude of some of these characters are also similar to each other in many
ways. Hal, Charles, and Mercedes ignorant attitudes are similar to the attitude of the man in To Build a
Fire. Their sled dogs confirm this in the quote on page 34

Composting, It s Gross
Composting, it s gross, it s stinky, and it can be downright atrocious, right? Wrong! Well, partly.
Composting can be gross sometimes with food and other weird things decaying, but the advantages
outweigh the risks don t they? Good soils that can help gardens, trees, and plants are worth having a
little stink. Many people think composting is hard, though it can be easier with the right equipment,
the right c:n ratio, and the right boosts that will help kick start your pile.
Compost bins have many different flavors or types. Some include tumblers (or revolving drums), orbs,
and cylinders. Tumblers and orbs are types of compost bins that helps turn your compost easier.
Revolving drums are normally on rollers or can be hand cranked. They are made to spin easier, and
are regularly enclosed. They also can be vertical to turn over, or horizontal to be rolled like a barrel.
Orbs are bins that are octanal shaped or round. Orbs are very similar to revolving drums, but are rolled
on the ground to mix the compost. Some even have numbers that can help you remember when you
last turned it.6 Cylinders are simple designs that are useful, and can be easy to move. Cylinders can be
open or closed. Open cylinders have no top or bottom, but has something of a wall around it. These
can be easily moved and mixed. Closed cylinders are commonly made of a thick plastic, and

An Analysis Of Weisman s The World Without Us
The Power of Nature: Rhetorical Strategies in Weisman s The World Without Us: Unbuilding Our
Homes In the book World Without Us, author Alan Weisman talks about what would happen to the
natural and built environment we ve established if humans suddenly disappeared. In Chapter two,
Unbuilding Our Home, Weisman effectively informs his readers of the total control that nature has on
our society by describing the immediate effect it takes on our own homes. He forces the readers to
recognize that we coexist with nature yet nature has the upper hand on man made objects. Weisman
achieves this by targeting the reader s emotions through description and personification and by
providing insight that appeals to the reader s intellect of the future. In Chapter 2, Weisman walks us
meticulously through the steps that lead inevitably to the complete destruction of almost every single
part of our houses. The first and last enemy is water. Water sneaks in at the weak points of roofs, near
the chimney. Mold begins to grow on wet wood; under the mold, threadlike filaments called hyphae
are secreting enzymes that break cellulose and lignin down into fungi food. (page 16) The roof falls in.
More water enters through the windows, some shattered when birds flew into them. The floor
corrodes. Squirrels and lizards eat the drywall. Vinyl siding begins to crack as its plasticizers weaken.
Even aluminum begins to break down, as salt eats it away. Steel gas pipes begin to rust away.

However, theoretically, many architecture theorists argued that people will prefer to visit a place that

Through a coordinated effort, RSA worked with law enforcement, the intelligence community, and

RSA s actions stand in contrast to many corporations that do not acknowledge breaches of sensitive
information systems for fear of alarming shareholders and exposing the corporation to lawsuits
(Gross, 2011). Even when evidence points to nation state involvement (most often China), many
companies still refuse to acknowledge breaches. The fear of offending the Chinese and jeopardizing
their share of that country s exploding markets is reason enough to remain quiet (Gross). Despite
mounting evidence, the U.S. government, for its part, has been fecklessly circumspect in calling out

Recovery after the breach at RSA was not limited to the RSA environment. Due to the widespread
implementation of RSA tokens across industry and government agencies (and its contractors) the
breach had far reaching implications across multiple sectors.
In an attempt to mitigate potential attacks on its customers environments related to the stolen
information, RSA outlined nine steps customers could take to harden their IT infrastructures and
reduce their chances of being breached (Gov InfoSecurity). While the recommended steps were
followed by defense contractor Lockheed Martin, they were later breached in an attack related to the
initial RSA breach

Decision Making Step
Decision Making Steps There are six steps typically associated with effective decision processes.
These six steps in the Managerial Decision Making Process are recognition of Decision Requirement,
Diagnosis and Analysis of Causes, Development of Alternatives, Selection of Desired Alternative,
Implementation of Chosen Alternative and Evaluation and Feedback.(Daft 1995) First steps in the
decision making steps are recognition of decision requirement. The ability to recognize what is known
is usually very important in the decision making steps. Therefore, during making decision managers
need to recognition problems and opportunity. This is because decision making is the process of

(5) redesign the work area to make it more pleasant, and (6) dismiss or retrain those supervisors who
are disliked by employees. Therefore, decision alternatives can be thought of as the tools for reducing
the difference between the organization s current and desired performance. In the steps 4 , once the
alternative have beeen developed, one must be selected. This might seem to be an obvious step after
all, this is because managers have already determined what their best alternative is. However, this best
alternative will be based on the amount of information available to the managers and by their
imperfect judgement. In addition, the manager s goal is to make the choice with the least amount of
risk and uncertainty. Because some risk is inherent for most non programmed decisions, managers try
to gauge prospects for success. Under conditions of uncertainly, they may have to relt on their intution
and experience to estimate whether a given course of action is likely to succeed. (Daft 1995) For
example, let us assume our problem is the low performance of sales department. We might believe that
performance of sales would be most conveniently increased if we dismissed the department
supervisor. But our investigation discovers that the supervisors is extremely important for

Tabula Rasa In Victor Frankenstein
Brought to life from the dead by the workings of Victor Frankenstein; There he was, a tabula rasa.
Tabula rasa is the absence of preconceived ideas or predetermined goals or a clean slate as stated in
the dictionary. Unbroken by society the creature was not a monster. It was the responsibility of
Frankenstein to influence and guide the creation to greatness and productivity but as the creator
abandoned him, he was all alone on the search of knowledge. As the creature yearned to be
enlightened, he discovered a series of books and those of his protectors which led him to the path of
destruction and revenge. One of the first books that the creature learned from was Volney s Ruins of
Empires. The creature learns about the science of letter from this book and it opened a wide field for
wonder and delight. It was full of information regarding historic empires and their way of life
including certain manners, the way the governments were ran, and the religions of each. Asia, Greece,
Roman wars, and the discovery of western hemisphere were also of topics explained in the book by
Felix. The creature stated, Was man, indeed, at once so powerful, so virtuous and magnificent, yet so
vicious and base? (Page 50) Through all this, he gained knowledge on the way the world worked and
was ran. This also sparked the hatred for ever being created and gave him the ways of destruction and
means of power. The next book which added to the sum of all who the creature was Goethe s Sorrows

The Importance Of The Atomic Bomb
You must not blame us scientists for the use which war technicians have put our discoveries.
Lise Meitner
The nuclear fission process that Meitner had discovered would end up playing a crucial role in World
War II and the world. The atomic bomb, created by Robert Oppenheimer and his team, was based on
the basic elements of nuclear fission. Meitner accomplished nuclear fission by bombarding a large
isotope with a smaller one, commonly a neutron. The collision caused the larger isotope to break apart
into two or more elements, which is called nuclear fission. Reactions of this type also release a lot of
energy. The energy comes from the atomic and subatomic particles that change into the form of energy
during the explosion. You can prove this by attempting to make an extremely accurate measurement of
all the masses of all the atoms and subatomic particles you start with prior to the explosion and all the
atoms and subatomic particles are returned, and then calculate the difference in mass in the two sums,
you find that the answer is larger than 0 which proves that mass goes disappears during the transition.
This loss of matter is called the mass defect. The missing matter is converted into energy. To calculate
the energy released or the mass defect, you can use the equation Einstein is famous for discovering:
E=mc2. In the equation, E represents the amount of energy produced, m is the so called missing mass,
more formally known as the mass defect, and c is the speed of light, which is an extremely large
number. Therefore, we get the equation that m = E/c*c. The speed of light is squared, making that part
of the equation a very large number that, even when multiplied by a small, minute amount of mass,
yields a huge amount of energy. If we look at the equation for the fission of U 235, we would notice
that one neutron created three. These three neutrons, if they encountered other U 235 atoms, could
initiate other fissions, producing even more neutrons, that would in turn, initiate other fissions. It s the
domino effect except this time, instead of a row of dominos, it is a wide spread fan of dominos. In
terms of nuclear chemistry, fission a continuing cascade of nuclear fissions that can be dubbed a

What Is The Labyrinth In Looking For Alaska
I have the same view of Looking for Alaska having finished it than when I wrote the first journal. It s
crazy good and John Green is a crazy good author. His writing style and technique show how
experienced he is.
Green portrays a lot of different people in his novels. He does seem to use many stereotypical
characters, but I think he means to do it that way. I definitely like characters in novels that do fit into
society. However, when you have people that you can fit into a certain category, it surprises you more
when they do something you wouldn t expect. You have the Weekday Warriors who are rich which
means most of them are mean, too. A big surprise is that the Colonel s girlfriend is a Weekday Warrior.

Although the story gives you a reason and way out of the labyrinth, you re still left to come up with
what the labyrinth means to you. Everybody in the book has their own meaning of what the labyrinth
is to them. The Colonel thinks it s a path that sucks, but the road you have to take. After all this time, it
seems to me like straight and fast is the only way out but I choose the labyrinth. The labyrinth blows,
but I choose it (Green 216). This quote shows that the Colonel knows life gives some horrible twists in
the original plan, however he seems to take it in stride. Pudge believes the only way to get through is
with forgiveness. He s constantly feeling guilty for things he did or didn t do. Finally, he realizes that
he can t let his past haunt him; he has to forgive himself for the past and forgive others. Alaska
believes it is suffering that you need to escape. She believes that all life is, is suffering and you can t
really escape. She has a pretty pessimistic view on life in general and thinks the only way out his
straight and fast. Her death could be a true example of that, which brings us to another issue that
Green leaves us with at the end of the book. How did she really die? The readers are never given and

Analysis Of Henrik Ibsen s A Doll House
Henrik Ibsen s play A Doll House addresses the importance of the roles women play throughout this
time period. Women are thought to be like dolls to their husbands, by obeying their commands and
keeping a good image. We see the main character, Nora Helmer struggle to keep her perfect image of a
great wife as troubles start to arise. Throughout the play we begin to see Nora push through her
troubles and find her true identity, Nora shifts from being the loving, perfect wife, to being a strong
and independent woman. Starting in Act one we see Nora Helmer as a loving, wife that likes to spend
all her husband s money. Although, she asks for money quite often and seems to spend freely, she
never spends the money on herself. She only purchases things for the house or her children. Nora
seems like a very selfless individual whose main concerns are her family. Through the statement her
husband, Torvald says that is, if you actually hung onto the money I give you, and you actually used it
to buy yourself something (800), we get the impression that Nora cares more about the happiness of
others than her own happiness. Instead of spending the money on herself, she would rather spend it on
her family. Nora plays the role of a loving woman who wants to please her husband and be the perfect
wife. We later realize there is more to Nora s spending habits than we know. When Mrs. Linde arrives
at the Helmer home, we see a shift in gears with Nora. At first Nora is very happy and

1939- 1945 Were Possibly The Worst Years In American History.
1939 1945 were possibly the worst years in American history. During this time, World War II was
occurring. Adolf Hitler was in complete control. He even went outside the battle grounds to wreck
havoc. He went to Babi Yar...the last place where Jews could hide.
Babi Yar is located in Kiev, Ukraine. During World War II, a massacre took place in the small town,
killing more than 1,000 Jews. The Nazis attacked them on September 29, 1943. Afterwards, the war
continued to rage, only to end in 1945. During World War II, Adolf Hitler rose to fame as the harsh

personal stations were destroyed during the massacre. The Nazis showed no mercy. (Hjelnguard, Kim)
After the massacre, the Nazis tried to hide evidence that anything ever happened by covering the dead
bodies with nothing but dirt and rock. The Nazis were convicted of what they tried to escape with, and
some were caught. They not only tired to hide the bodies with dirt and rock, but they even burned

Examples Of Diasporic Culture In Home To Harlem
2. A ship is a significant term regarding the context of diasporic culture because it is a vehicle which
can move between various places. Ideally, it could be used as a tool to explore one s identity. The
image of the ship is utilized in almost all the texts which we have read thus far this semester, from
texts such as Claude McKay s Home to Harlem to the opening scenes of Zora Neale Hurston s Their
Eyes Were Watching God to Marcus Garvey s essays and speeches in Philosophy and Opinion. Where
ships remain a metaphorical component of the two fictional texts mentioned, it represents a vehicle
which would further a Pan African agenda in the second. In Home to Harlem, McKay s protagonist,
Jake, spends his time on various forms of transportation, such as trains. However, he begins his tale on
a freighter on his way back to Harlem. The first image we see of him is one on a ship, making a choice
to come back to the United States. As an American protagonist, Jake s diasporic identity has been
created by ships through the slave trade while simultaneously being steered by ships through his own
autonomy regarding decisions on where to live at any moment. As mentioned before, Marcus Garvey s
essays and speeches hinge on the return to Africa. This return would be accomplished through the
Black Star, which never began its journey in relocating black individuals to Africa. Overall, both texts
represent ships as a vehicle which can give individuals with diasporic backgrounds some form of

Distortion in Brave New World Essay
Distortion in Brave New World
Distortion is an image of a thought or idea that appears to have a single affect on a society, but in
actuality provides one that is totally different. Often times in order for readers to understand the
realism of today s society and the point that the author tries to make in presenting its flaws, the writer
must distort reality. In doing this he urges the reader to engage in a deep thought process that forces
them to realize the reality of a situation, rather than perceiving it to be good or evil based on the
dilutions of individuals. In his novel Brave New World, Aldous Huxley uses tomorrow s dystopia and
distorts it by creating a utopian visage. By distorting religion and science, Huxley allows ... Show

Is Attrition A Negative Impact On Late Stage Doctoral...
Literature Review Willis and Carmichael (2011) presented foundlings stating that attrition is defined
by the experiences gathered in the doctoral study rather than the stage at which erosion occurs. The
study share relevant similarities to previous research, indicating perverse experiences could lead to
pessimistic outcomes regardless of the field or stage of the doctorate program (Willis and Carmichael,
2011). The theoretical foundations of this case study support the synthesis arguments of Hoskins and
Goldberg (2005) that stated dissertation committee chair post a problematic negative impact on late
stage doctoral attrition. Other scholars argue the results of the current research. Incomplete doctoral
learners all assert how a problematic relationship with their dissertation chair played a significant role
in their decision to leave the program (Willis and Carmichael, 2011). However, Willis and Carmichael
(2011) identified the gap and addressed problems in the attrition decision. Dropped out learners were
not allowed to achieve their goals, and that resulted in negative emotions (Willis and Carmichael
(2011). According to Willis and Carmichael (2011), comparatively, students that willing quit the
dissertation process no longer desire the degree, and thus experienced positive emotions related to
attrition, but more research is needed. Phenomenon Key Component The event key element in this

The Mind Body And Body
The Mind Body problem arises to Philosophy when we wonder what is the relationship between the
mental states, like beliefs and thoughts, and the physical states, like water, human bodies and tables.
For the purpose of this paper I will consider physical states as human bodies because we are thinking
beings, while the other material things have no mental processes. The question whether mind and
body are the same thing, somehow related, or two distinct things not related, has been asked
throughout the history of Philosophy, so some philosophers tried to elaborate arrangements and
arguments about it, in order to solve the problem and give a satisfactory answer to the question. This
paper will argue that the Mind Body Dualism, a view in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(In class, Schmit used the four elements to explain it.) Materialism is considered a monistic view,
since it considers that all things belong to this one fundamental kind of thing. Usually, the
philosophers that believe in Materialism presuppose that, if the mind is a material thing, then it is
reasonable to relate it to the brain or with the functioning of the brain, since the brain is a material
thing and it is certainly associated with thinking.
Opposed to Mind Body Materialism is Mind Body Dualism, a view which supports that mind and
body are not identical, but, in some sense, radically different kinds of thing. It denies that the mind is
the same of the brain, or a product of the brain, by arguing that the thoughts and the material things are
composed of different substances, and the mind is a thinking thing that lacks the usual attributes of
physical objects: size, shape, location, solidity, motion, etc. According to the Dualism, the soul is
comprised of a non physical substance, while the body is constituted of matter. This view also
establishes that mind and body are capable of causally affecting each other, even if they are
necessarily not the same thing. When applying this notion the human body, the meaning becomes
clearest: the intellect is responsible for all our acts, but it does not imply that the intellect is the brain.
For example, before eating a meal, which is a physical action, you probably felt hungry,

The Revolutions Of The French Revolution
The revolutions that occurred in France and Spain were in different time periods and sought to change
their country in different ways. Despite this, there are many parallels in the ideologies and histories of
their revolutionary leaders. Looking at this, one might ask how the backgrounds and styles of the
leaders affected the outcome of each revolution? Napoleon Bonaparte of the French Revolution
(hereafter Napoleon) and Francisco Franco of the Spanish Civil War (hereafter Franco) came from
similar backgrounds with a heavy influence on education and military training. Both men fought with
a primary motivation of forming a military dictatorship under their rule. One notable area that where
they differed is in their leadership: Franco led through fear and intimidation whereas Napoleon led by
gaining the respect of his people. With respect to their backgrounds, Francisco Franco and Napoleon
Bonaparte came from middle class families and went on to establish themselves as leaders in military
school. Franco was born in El Ferrol, a small naval base in northwestern Spain, in Galicia. It is said
that the stereotypical Galician man... is melancholic, soft spoken, and prudent. Because of this, many

Nihilism In Mrs Dalloway
Virginia Woolf s outlook on life as expressed through the novel, Mrs. Dalloway is pessimistic and
even cynical. Both, the satirical parts of the novel and the serious and tragic parts of it convey this
pessimistic philosophy of life and nihilism. Mrs. Dalloway is a representation of the post war
civilization. The outward façade of that civilization, its external glitter and brilliance, its pomp and
show, its social snobbery, its hypocrisy and its material achievements etc are all represented through
the life of Dalloways. Virginia Woolf has juxtaposed this zest for life and outward pretence with the
hollowness of mankind which is rotten within. So the novel generally portrays the concept of nihilism
through the spiritual death and emptiness of post war civilization.
The paper generally examines this notion of nothingness where values are baseless and no loyalties
exist in the world. As depicted in the novel, there is no as such concept of reliability exist within the

techniques to improve retention and enhance learning. The literature review was to be completed by
October 31, 2015. Objective #2. Specific details were collected from several sources, to determine if
the pre operative education process was effective. A large aspect of the data was to review the pre
operative process. The GHC ambulatory surgery center located in Bellevue, Washington was the target
clinic. Andrew Latter, the manager for the ambulatory surgery center, was contacted via email for
permission to talk to the nursing staff. Andrew s response was positive and a date and time were
arranged. Six registered nurses (RN), three certified nursing assistants (CNA), one coordinator
procedure scheduler, and one pre anesthesia screener were surveyed/interviewed. The nursing staff
scheduled to work that day in the post anesthesia care unit (PACU) participated in the survey, with the
exception of one registered nurse that was attending to a patient. Three certified nursing assistants
were surveyed. They indicated they were not able to provide these types of details, since it was out of

Hume True Knowledge
In a world full of false news and information, it is often difficult to distinguish truth from fiction.
Many individuals assume these ideas to be true without considering the merit behind these claims.
However, considering the facts, we also need to ponder this idea: Can we really know anything for
certain? While Hume argues, true knowledge is impossible to obtain by using experience alone, I
argue that experience is the foundation of learning and that by establishing foundational ideas, we can
ultimately reach true knowledge. Experience is something used to gain information about the world
and aids in understanding of how it functions. It is what separates instincts from science. I feel
experience is a powerful perception that allows individuals to truly learn more about the world simply
by going through everyday life. It is comparable to playing a new game online that lacks instructions.
At first, it might seem difficult adjusting to the certain strategy involved and the controls. Then, as
time goes on, skill set expands, and improvement is made at the game. This experience in the game
alone allows you to learn how to play. This is the same with real life. No one is born with the
experience and no one has instructions on what to do with their lives. ... Show more content on

Then, if people do not believe in anything at all, our existence would therefore be unreal because
something must be known to exist. So, if philosophers do not believe in our existence, they would be
saying this world were not in fact real and humans would be uncapable of thought. However, to
understand what is not real would require us to know what is real to begin with. Making the
conclusion that to say what something is not, would require defining what it is first, proving that since
our world is real because we have thoughts, life must have absolute knowledge or else life could not

Liberal Arts Should Be Taught In College Essay
What is Being Taught in College?
What should colleges be teaching, is a question that many people are wanting an answer to. Should
colleges be teaching students liberal arts or should they just let liberal arts classes slip away? This a
controversy between students on every college campus. It is important to the students, because they
want what is best for themselves during college. I believe that students need to be taught liberal arts to
help better their learning abilities. In my own experience, I have learned that liberal arts classes may
be frustrating, but in the long run they have really helped to develop a better grasp on general
education. Liberal arts classes are a good way to begin college, instead of just jumping right in to a
major.
Colleges should teach liberal arts because they help students develop better learning skills. ... Show

Students will still learn the same way, whether there are a lot of students or a little. Smaller class size
do not make a student perform better, that is up to the student, not the class size. Students can learn in
any type of environment; class size does not matter when it comes to a students learning ability.
Learning is not about where the knowledge is learned, it is about how it is learned and if a student is
willing to learn it. Some might also oppose that colleges should not make students take liberal arts
classes. Liberal arts classes do not always help a student develop better learning skills. Some liberal
arts classes are not even relevant to a students major. Having to take classes that are not relevant to a
student can be overwhelming and frustrating for them. It is too expensive for them to have to pay for
classes that are not relevant to their major. Students should be able to choose what classes they want to
enroll in and how they want to do it. In all reality, they are the ones that have to pay for their

The Crimes Of The Person Act ( Oapa 1861 )
In 1861, the Offences Against the Person Act (OAPA 1861) was introduced to give distinction
between various criminal acts towards other people. However, from its inception it has created the
requirements for defences for the numerous offences. One of the most complex of these is the defence
of consent, the one to be considered here. With regard to this problem, it is necessary to identify any
crime that has been committed, examine how consent will apply and analyse how satisfactory the law
is on this topic. I will first discuss what crimes Wilbur has committed followed by whether he can
indeed use the defence of consent before finishing with my own thoughts on the law and how this area
could possibly benefit from reform.
Under s.20 of the OAPA 1861, Wilbur has committed the crime of Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH)
against Ewan. Despite only meaning to cause bruising which would count as battery, Wilbur has
caused a much more serious offence in GBH albeit unintentionally. Wilbur did not mean to cause
GBH but s.20 of the above act enables him to be charged for GBH without meaning it, as it brings a
recklessness element into play. Under s.20, the defendant must have the intention or be reckless as to
the causing of some harm. There is no need for the prosecution to establish that they intended or was
reckless as to causing serious harm. In the case of DPP v Smith , grievous bodily harm was defined as
really serious harm, which the ripping off of two fingers definitely satisfies.

Reasons For Secession
The Confederate States of America: Formation and Reasons for Secession While the Confederate
States of America ultimately failed in their goal, the effects of their secession and the Civil War linger
into the modern day. There have been many diverging views on the political reasoning behind the
separation of the North from the South, and it has become a contentious issue in the twenty first
century. This paper will examine the causes of secession, the initial political formation of the
Confederate States of America, and the Southern citizens opinions of the Southern secession.
The Causes of Secession The reasons for the South s departure from union can be summarized into
two main topics. Of those, slavery was the most contentious and ... Show more content on

In fact, many leaders of the Southern church prayed for secession and that their state would abandon
the Union (The Civil War, p. 53). Another way that religion influenced the war was the perception that
slave owners were doing Christian work by owning slaves. Stephen Hale, a lawyer and state legislator
from Alabama, wrote to Kentucky s governor stating that the institution of slavery civilized and
Christianized the heathen better than any other agency. In his letter, he also claimed that slavery
improved the moral, physical, and intellectual condition of those in slavery (The Civil War, p.

The Importance Of Religion And Politics In Bangladesh
Religion and politics are interdependent from the beginning. Political and religious power are
interconnected. In 1905, the separation between state and religious institutions occurred. But, that
doesn t mean that religion has lost its important in terms of politics. Still, religion plays and important
part in the political system. Religion influence the politics from the core. Religion is a mandatory part
of politics which cannot be replaced (Fox, 2013).
Religion has not only influence over our political aspects but also in our social aspects too. More
accurately, religion has more influence over our social life than political. Religion is an element of
social control. As Karl Marx has said, religion is the opium of mass people (Eggers, 2015). Through
socialization process a human being entangled in the chain of Social control. It is a process which
enlighten a person about the rules, regulations and procedures of the society. It tells an individual his
or, her place and marks their limitations. Religion just make those implementations more strong so
that no one can break the traditional norms and values of the society. Thus religion preserve the
traditions as they were and control the society (Liska, 1992).
Bangladesh is a country where religion based parties play quite a dominant role. There are nearly 40
parties registered with the Election Commission and among them 12 are Islamic parties. Those parties
are legally accepted to participate into the political domain of

Conducting research Looking and listening Participant observation involves looking and listening. The general rule is to go with the flow rather than forcing the pace and influencing peoples behaviour. Since the aim is to observe people in their normal setting, the research must not disturb that setting. Blending into the background is usually recommended, though this is not always possible. For example, a participant observer in a classroom can stand out like a sore thumb. This can result in an artificial lesson. However, its surprising how soon he or she becomes invisible and taken for granted. In his study of a secondary school, Walford (1933) found that it took four weeks of observation before any class misbehaved. However, the situation changed rapidly after this time and Walford was soon watching mock wrestling and chairs flying around the classroom! Asking Questions Watching and listening are not always adequate for the researcher s purposes. Sometimes a participant observer must take a more active role in order to obtain information. In addition, the manager s goal is to make the choice with the least amount of risk and uncertainty. Because some risk is inherent for most non programmed decisions, managers try to gauge prospects for success. Under conditions of uncertainly, they may have to relt on their intution and experience to estimate whether a given course of action is likely to succeed. Tabula rasa is the absence of preconceived ideas or predetermined goals or a clean slate as stated in the dictionary. Unbroken by society the creature was not a monster. It was the responsibility of Frankenstein to influence and guide the creation to greatness and productivity but as the creator abandoned him, he was all alone on the search of knowledge. As the creature yearned to be enlightened, he discovered a series of books and those of his protectors which led him to the path of destruction and revenge. One of the first books that the creature learned from was Volney s Ruins of Empires. The creature learns about the science of letter from this book and it opened a wide field for wonder and delight. It was full of information regarding historic empires and their way of life including certain manners, the way the governments were ran, and the religions of each. Asia, Greece, Roman wars, and the discovery of western hemisphere were also of topics explained in the book by Felix. The creature stated, Was man, indeed, at once so powerful, so virtuous and magnificent, yet so vicious and base? (Page 50) Through all this, he gained knowledge on the way the world worked and was ran. This also sparked the hatred for ever being created and gave him the ways of destruction and means of power. • 23. The Importance Of The Atomic Bomb You must not blame us scientists for the use which war technicians have put our discoveries. Lise Meitner The nuclear fission process that Meitner had discovered would end up playing a crucial role in World War II and the world. The atomic bomb, created by Robert Oppenheimer and his team, was based on the basic elements of nuclear fission. Meitner accomplished nuclear fission by bombarding a large isotope with a smaller one, commonly a neutron. The collision caused the larger isotope to break apart into two or more elements, which is called nuclear fission. Reactions of this type also release a lot of energy. The energy comes from the atomic and subatomic particles that change into the form of energy during the explosion. You can prove this by attempting to make an extremely accurate measurement of all the masses of all the atoms and subatomic particles you start with prior to the explosion and all the atoms and subatomic particles are returned, and then calculate the difference in mass in the two sums, you find that the answer is larger than 0 which proves that mass goes disappears during the transition. This loss of matter is called the mass defect. The missing matter is converted into energy. To calculate the energy released or the mass defect, you can use the equation Einstein is famous for discovering: E=mc2. In the equation, E represents the amount of energy produced, m is the so called missing mass, more formally known as the mass defect, and c is the speed of light, which is an extremely large number. Therefore, we get the equation that m = E/c*c. The speed of light is squared, making that part of the equation a very large number that, even when multiplied by a small, minute amount of mass, yields a huge amount of energy. If we look at the equation for the fission of U 235, we would notice that one neutron created three. These three neutrons, if they encountered other U 235 atoms, could initiate other fissions, producing even more neutrons, that would in turn, initiate other fissions. It s the domino effect except this time, instead of a row of dominos, it is a wide spread fan of dominos. In terms of nuclear chemistry, fission a continuing cascade of nuclear fissions that can be dubbed a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It s crazy good and John Green is a crazy good author. His writing style and technique show how experienced he is. Green portrays a lot of different people in his novels. He does seem to use many stereotypical characters, but I think he means to do it that way. I definitely like characters in novels that do fit into society. However, when you have people that you can fit into a certain category, it surprises you more when they do something you wouldn t expect. • 25. Analysis Of Henrik Ibsen s A Doll House Henrik Ibsen s play A Doll House addresses the importance of the roles women play throughout this time period. Women are thought to be like dolls to their husbands, by obeying their commands and keeping a good image. We see the main character, Nora Helmer struggle to keep her perfect image of a great wife as troubles start to arise. Throughout the play we begin to see Nora push through her troubles and find her true identity, Nora shifts from being the loving, perfect wife, to being a strong and independent woman. Starting in Act one we see Nora Helmer as a loving, wife that likes to spend all her husband s money. Although, she asks for money quite often and seems to spend freely, she never spends the money on herself. She only purchases things for the house or her children. Nora seems like a very selfless individual whose main concerns are her family. Through the statement her husband, Torvald says that is, if you actually hung onto the money I give you, and you actually used it to buy yourself something (800), we get the impression that Nora cares more about the happiness of others than her own happiness. Instead of spending the money on herself, she would rather spend it on her family. Nora plays the role of a loving woman who wants to please her husband and be the perfect wife. We later realize there is more to Nora s spending habits than we know. When Mrs. Linde arrives at the Helmer home, we see a shift in gears with Nora. At first Nora is very happy and ... Ideally, it could be used as a tool to explore one s identity. The image of the ship is utilized in almost all the texts which we have read thus far this semester, from texts such as Claude McKay s Home to Harlem to the opening scenes of Zora Neale Hurston s Their Eyes Were Watching God to Marcus Garvey s essays and speeches in Philosophy and Opinion. Where ships remain a metaphorical component of the two fictional texts mentioned, it represents a vehicle which would further a Pan African agenda in the second. In Home to Harlem, McKay s protagonist, Jake, spends his time on various forms of transportation, such as trains. However, he begins his tale on a freighter on his way back to Harlem. The first image we see of him is one on a ship, making a choice to come back to the United States. As an American protagonist, Jake s diasporic identity has been created by ships through the slave trade while simultaneously being steered by ships through his own autonomy regarding decisions on where to live at any moment. As mentioned before, Marcus Garvey s essays and speeches hinge on the return to Africa. The question whether mind and body are the same thing, somehow related, or two distinct things not related, has been asked throughout the history of Philosophy, so some philosophers tried to elaborate arrangements and arguments about it, in order to solve the problem and give a satisfactory answer to the question. Materialism is considered a monistic view, since it considers that all things belong to this one fundamental kind of thing. Usually, the philosophers that believe in Materialism presuppose that, if the mind is a material thing, then it is reasonable to relate it to the brain or with the functioning of the brain, since the brain is a material thing and it is certainly associated with thinking. Opposed to Mind Body Materialism is Mind Body Dualism, a view which supports that mind and body are not identical, but, in some sense, radically different kinds of thing. It denies that the mind is the same of the brain, or a product of the brain, by arguing that the thoughts and the material things are composed of different substances, and the mind is a thinking thing that lacks the usual attributes of physical objects: size, shape, location, solidity, motion, etc. According to the Dualism, the soul is comprised of a non physical substance, while the body is constituted of matter. This view also establishes that mind and body are capable of causally affecting each other, even if they are necessarily not the same thing. Both, the satirical parts of the novel and the serious and tragic parts of it convey this pessimistic philosophy of life and nihilism. Mrs. Dalloway is a representation of the post war civilization. The outward façade of that civilization, its external glitter and brilliance, its pomp and show, its social snobbery, its hypocrisy and its material achievements etc are all represented through the life of Dalloways. Many individuals assume these ideas to be true without considering the merit behind these claims. However, considering the facts, we also need to ponder this idea: Can we really know anything for certain? While Hume argues, true knowledge is impossible to obtain by using experience alone, I argue that experience is the foundation of learning and that by establishing foundational ideas, we can ultimately reach true knowledge. Experience is something used to gain information about the world and aids in understanding of how it functions. It is what separates instincts from science. I feel experience is a powerful perception that allows individuals to truly learn more about the world simply by going through everyday life. However, to understand what is not real would require us to know what is real to begin with. Making the conclusion that to say what something is not, would require defining what it is first, proving that since our world is real because we have thoughts, life must have absolute knowledge or else life could not ... • 41. Liberal Arts Should Be Taught In College Essay What is Being Taught in College? What should colleges be teaching, is a question that many people are wanting an answer to. Should colleges be teaching students liberal arts or should they just let liberal arts classes slip away? This a controversy between students on every college campus. It is important to the students, because they want what is best for themselves during college. I believe that students need to be taught liberal arts to help better their learning abilities. In my own experience, I have learned that liberal arts classes may be frustrating, but in the long run they have really helped to develop a better grasp on general education. Liberal arts classes are a good way to begin college, instead of just jumping right in to a major. Colleges should teach liberal arts because they help students develop better learning skills. ... Smaller class size do not make a student perform better, that is up to the student, not the class size. Students can learn in any type of environment; class size does not matter when it comes to a students learning ability. Learning is not about where the knowledge is learned, it is about how it is learned and if a student is willing to learn it. Some might also oppose that colleges should not make students take liberal arts classes. Liberal arts classes do not always help a student develop better learning skills. Some liberal arts classes are not even relevant to a students major. Having to take classes that are not relevant to a student can be overwhelming and frustrating for them. • 42. The Crimes Of The Person Act ( Oapa 1861 ) In 1861, the Offences Against the Person Act (OAPA 1861) was introduced to give distinction between various criminal acts towards other people. However, from its inception it has created the requirements for defences for the numerous offences. One of the most complex of these is the defence of consent, the one to be considered here. With regard to this problem, it is necessary to identify any crime that has been committed, examine how consent will apply and analyse how satisfactory the law is on this topic. I will first discuss what crimes Wilbur has committed followed by whether he can indeed use the defence of consent before finishing with my own thoughts on the law and how this area could possibly benefit from reform. Under s.20 of the OAPA 1861, Wilbur has committed the crime of Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) against Ewan. Despite only meaning to cause bruising which would count as battery, Wilbur has caused a much more serious offence in GBH albeit unintentionally. Wilbur did not mean to cause GBH but s.20 of the above act enables him to be charged for GBH without meaning it, as it brings a recklessness element into play. Under s.20, the defendant must have the intention or be reckless as to the causing of some harm. There is no need for the prosecution to establish that they intended or was reckless as to causing serious harm. In the case of DPP v Smith , grievous bodily harm was defined as really serious harm, which the ripping off of two fingers definitely satisfies. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Another way that religion influenced the war was the perception that slave owners were doing Christian work by owning slaves. Stephen Hale, a lawyer and state legislator from Alabama, wrote to Kentucky s governor stating that the institution of slavery civilized and Christianized the heathen better than any other agency. In his letter, he also claimed that slavery improved the moral, physical, and intellectual condition of those in slavery (The Civil War, p. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Still, religion plays and important part in the political system. Religion influence the politics from the core. Religion is a mandatory part of politics which cannot be replaced (Fox, 2013). Religion has not only influence over our political aspects but also in our social aspects too. More accurately, religion has more influence over our social life than political. Religion is an element of social control. As Karl Marx has said, religion is the opium of mass people (Eggers, 2015). Through socialization process a human being entangled in the chain of Social control. It is a process which enlighten a person about the rules, regulations and procedures of the society.
