Essay On River Otters
In the Taiga biome, the animals living there can survive through the cold and snowy climate of the
biome. The Gray Wolf or the Timber Wolf is the top of the food chain and is the largest wild canine.
The Gray Wolf lives in the forests of the Taiga Biome and is part of a species of lupus. The River Otter
inhabits the swamps, lakes and rivers of the Taiga Biome. The River Otter also inhabits the woods in
the Taiga Biome. River Otters are a species of canadensis and are also omnivores so they eat both
plants and animals. The Snowshoe Rabbit or also known as the Varying Hare also lives in the forest
areas of the Taiga Biome. Snowshoe Rabbit is found mostly in the higher parts of North America and
they migrate throughout the midwest United States.

Reflection On Race And Ethnicity
I am creative, short, determined, competitive, and a dyslexic Hispanic female. Society has shown us
that a large part of who we are in the United States focuses on our ethnicity and race. For every
important document, we have to fill out a form asking us about our race/ethnicity. We can say that we
are one race but we actually all are multiple races. Growing up I knew that I was Hispanic but I really
didn t feel like I was treated differently. I feel like because I had the lighter skin I was not viewed
necessarily as a Mexican. There were a few times that I was made fun of for being Hispanic, the
largest problem that I faced was people thinking that I spoke Spanish. On My mother s side, I am 6th
generation Coloradan with ties to México and on my father s side, I am a third generation American
with ties to Spain and México. Defining yourself can always be a struggle because not everyone
defines you the way that you define yourself. Growing up my family told me stories about how they
were made fun of or picked on because of their skin color and the fact that they spoke Spanish. My
grandfather started a roofing company in North Denver as he worked more and made more money he
moved to the Italian part of town where my mother and her siblings were called coconuts and Oreos
because they were dark on the outside but they acted differently compared to other Hispanics. My
grandmother told me about how people would tell her not to speak Spanish because she was an
American and that she was in America so she needed to speak English. This was difficult for Hispanic
people because they were having to lose part of their culture and part of their identity. My
grandmother always would tell me about how it was harder for her to attend school because she would
get into trouble if she acted differently. My grandmother on my father s side of the family had a more
sheltered life where she was not racially discriminated against because she was part of the Spanish
consulate. She always told us about the cool places she would go to because of her father s job. It was
interesting learning that she was born in Japan while her sister was born in France. Growing up she
never needed to help around the house or have a job because

Dartmouth College Vs. Woodward
Dartmouth College v. Woodward (1819) Living in the 1800 s was not an easy task. This was the time
of child labor and little to no education for kids. The time of having to walk 2 3 miles anywhere and
making sure the crops were well enough to sell in the markets. The time of Westward Expansion and
the genocide of Native Americans. Eleazar Wheelock, a Puritan minister from Columbia, CT was the
one who founded Dartmouth. He initially established the school to train Native Americans as Christian
missionaries. His inspiration for the school first came about due to his relationship with a Mohegan
Indian Samson Occom. The name of the school was to be Moor s Indian Charity School and was
officially established in 1755. It was somewhat successful, but they still needed more funding in order
to maintain the schools operations. Wheelock and Occom decided to go to England in 1766 to raise
money for the school. Once they raised enough, they made a trust to help the school. The Charity
School finally had enough financial support to keep going. But Wheelock had trouble recruiting
Native Americans to attend the institution due to the location being far away from the tribal territories.
He decided to relocate the school to Hanover, in the Province of New Hampshire. Following the
relocation, it was difficult to find resources and secure a charter. Luckily, the Royal Governor of New
Hampshire, John Wentworth, provided the land that Dartmouth would be built on and issued a charter

Essay on Hysteria
In the beginning was Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, who freed the emerging science from the
chains of superstition, introduced empirical observation and the bedside manner, and both identified
and named hysteria (Gilman 1993, 3). Hippocrates, lived in ancient Greece from 460 BCE to 377
BCE, the first [known] person to study hysterical actions believed (as did the proceding Greeks and
Romans) that hysteria was strictly a female problem, and in many cases almost any problem a female
had was considered hysteria (Gilman 1993, 4). This view was believed for an extensive period of time
but as Appignanesi asserts many other things that were once believed to be true are proven false later,

Her mother suffered from house wife s psychosis , her fathers brother was a hypochondriac, her
fathers sister was extremely neurotic. Dora had one brother who had a strange connection with her. In
the words of Freud, ...her brother was as a rule the first to start an illness and used to have it very
slightly, and then she would follow suit with a severe form of it. (15). Her brother (one and a half
years older then her), who tried to stay out of family affairs, when involved would side with his
mother over Dora or her father. This fits well with Freuds oedipal theories. In fact much of Freuds
analysis of Dora uncovered repressed sexual desires.
Around the age of eight Dora began to develop neurotic symptoms. Their family doctor diagnosed the
ailments as strictly mental and not physical. This is the precursor to her hysteria, as hysteria is strictly
a mental syndrome which can affect the physical body but resides in the confines of the mind. At the
age of twelve Dora suffered severe migraine headaches and random attacks of nervous coughing.
These usually went together but as the illness developed the afflictions came separately. By the age of
16 the coughing had totally although the coughing or tussis nervosa got worse and would last up to
several months. The most troublesome symptom during

The Impact Of Sound On The World Of Sound Cinema
Sound is obviously an essential part of cinema, and most couldn t imagine watching any sort of
entertainment without sound. Although how did sounds start and what were some major advancements
in the world of sound cinema? The introduction of sound to cinema began by a process known as
Phonofilm, created by a man named Lee de Forest and Theodore Case in 1923. The Phonofilm, which
recorded synchronized sound directly onto film, was used to record a variety of entertainment
including vaudeville acts, musical numbers, political speeches and opera singers. Unfortunately, this
sound film didn t last long because it was overshadowed by the sound on disc, later named the
Vitaphone.
The Vitaphone was developed by Western Electrics Bell Laboratories and quickly acquired by Warner
Bros Company in April of 1925. The Warner Brothers film Don Juan, directed by Alan Crosland,
which utilized the first system with synchronized music score and sound effects, first showcased the
Vitaphone. Using the Vitaphone, Warner Brothers went on to produce over 100 short films during the
mid 1920 s. In 1927, The Jazz Singer was released, which was essentially a silent picture with
Vitaphone score and the occasional episodes of synchronized singing and speech. Although the
Vitaphone seemed like a revolutionary concept opening a whole new market of cinema, it became
apparent that recording on film would be much more convenient.
Sound on disk had been in the tweaking process throughout the early

Fairy Tales Effect on Children
Cinderella As children most of our life lessons were acquired through the simplicity of fair tales.
Subliminal messages taught us to always believe in true love and that good wins out over evil. Young
and naïve, as children, all we desired was a good story and a nap, but the lessons we learned lasted a
lifetime. Growing up my beloved fairy tale was Cinderella, not only does true love win but good wins
over evil and eventually the world is set right. Once upon a time in a kingdom far away, lived a
beautiful girl and her frail father. Fearing he would leave his young daughter an orphan he married a
young widow, soon after he brought his bride and two daughters to live with him on his manor.

Julian Informative Speech
We know so little. There are so few facts recorded, we don t even know her name but I can tell you we
know her impact and can feel her work stretching through decades and centuries to continue to inspire
and shape the lives of people today. This is Julian of Norwich.
Julian was born in 1342 in Norwich, England and spent most of her life as an anchorite, a recluse
living alone in an closed room attached to the parish church of St Julian of LeMans at Conisford in
Norwich. Though few biographic details are known about Julian, it is likely she came from a wealth
family as anchoresses had to prove they could support themselves through some form of income
before they could be enclosed. Julian s name could have been her baptism name or she may have
followed the custom of taking the name of the saint attached to the church of which she became an
anchorite.
Julian recognised her need for deeper love and knowledge of Christ and appealed to God, asking for
three things. Firstly she prayed for revelations so she could gain a greater understanding of Christ s
passion. Secondly she asked for a near death experience which would allow her to experience all that
a body and soul could including the last rites but survive. Allowing her to live a more consecrated life
being more mindful of God. Julian s final request was for three wounds ... Show more content on

Ivan The Terrible Book
IVAN THE TERRIBLE Book: Ivan The Terrible by Chelsea House The reign of Grand Duke Vasili III
in medieval Russia was the beginning of a complete turn around for Moscow. Moscow got better and
better until it became the most powerful city of medieval Russia, and Russia as a whole was under the
overall rule of Moscow. Soon, when Vasili III died, he left the big role of ruling all of Russia and
Moscow to his older son, Ivan or Ivan The Terrible . Until Ivan could rule, Yelena, his mother, ruled
instead, until her death due to an attempted overthrow of noble families. Still, Ivan was too young to
rule, so the boyars of Russia took his place instead. Two families among the boyars competed for
power and Moscow became a place full of crime. Eventually, ... Show more content on

by removing some bad governors. However, once he replaced the governors of the people with much
more powerful judiciaries often used cruel and unusual punishment for crimes. Ivan s desperate
attempts to make the average Russian s life better lasted for two years until he started to focus on the
rights of the Orthodox Church and its relationship with Ivan. Ivan gave the church more
responsibilities with new rules. Next, he changed the rules on people s taxes. Also, communities in
Russia the still had governors, were allowed to elect people to watch over their governor s actions.
Ivan also made moves to improve Russia s military. Lastly, the most influential man a part of the
Chosen Council, Zemsky Sobor, made Ivan free every part of Russia that was threatened by Tatar
invasion. All of these acts were to try to modernize Russia but also showed how determined Ivan was
to take away all power of the boyars, and completely rid of their political

Black Holes And Its Effects On Society
Supermassive black holes are so mysterious when it comes to the knowledge we know about them.
We still don t know much about them and there will always be conspiracies about them, but we still
need to find more information about them to understand more. Black holes are developed when a star
s core collapses and then mass is getting eaten by the core which leads to the star to die in a supernova
explosion. This can go two ways, one is that the star turns into a neutron star, and the second is it turns
into a black hole but only if the star is massive enough. There are known to be three kinds of black
holes. Intermediate, stellar, and supermassive black holes. We still don t know how supermassive
black holes are formed, but most scientists ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is called Cygnus X 1. Rockets that were carrying a device called Geiger counter that measure
radioactivity by counting ionizing particles. Eight X ray sources were found and scientist detected
radio emissions from Cygnus X 1. A massive hidden companion was found and that was considered
the first black hole to be discovered. (6) We have a lot of evidence to prove that supermassive black
holes exist in galaxies. Scientist found evidence of a supermassive black hole in the center of the
Milky Way, the galaxy NGC 4258, galaxy M87, and several more. Scientist verified the existence of
black holes by studying the speed of the clouds of gas orbiting the galaxy regions. In 1994, the Hubble
space telescope measured an unseen object that had an estimated mass of about 3 billion times the
mass of the sun in our solar system. The unseen object was located in the center of the galaxy M87.
Scientist measured the mass of the object through the motion of the object whirling around the center.
(2) More evidence for the existence of supermassive black holes is the existence of quasars. Quasars
are a massive and extremely remote celestial object that emits large amounts of energy. They are also
one of the brightest objects in the universe. They are typically more than 100 times brighter than the
galaxies they re in. Quasars emit light through disks of gas and stars that are known as an accretion
disk. The accretion disk surrounds black holes. The closest quasars are

Effective Science Teaching
Science is, by its nature, inquiry based and science knowledge is built through processes in which
discoveries of the natural world are made (Abruscato, 2000). It utilizes discovery and scientific
thinking process to explore and learn knowledge and skills. Learning by doing is the new efficient
method in teaching science. For kindergarten, this method leads to better understanding of science
concepts and builds skills that children will use in future life .What a child can do with assistance now,
they can later do on their own (Vygotsky, 1978). John Dewey (1916) stated that children must be
engaged in an active quest for learning and new ideas. Inquiry is important in educating
kindergarteners because it not only keeps them interested in lessons but also helps them retain more
information when performing exploration and investigation. Children are naturally motivated to learn
and actively seek out information to help their understanding (Piaget, 1950).The success of students
who participate in hands on inquiry activities suggests that if students have first hands experience with
science, concepts are easier to understand and apply and students are generally more favorable to
science and have better understanding of the nature of science .Within a conceptual framework,
inquiry learning and active learner involvement can lead to important outcomes in the classroom. In
kindergarten, students who are actively making observations, collecting results and drawing

Simon Quotes In Lord Of The Flies
Characters Clarified Simon was the wisest boy of the group on the island. He knew before anyone else
that the beast was not some physical creature to be scared of. He knew the beast was not something
they could just kill. This is shown in the quote, However Simon thought of the beast, there rose before
his inward sight the picture of a human at once heroic and sick (Golding, page 103). Simon was a shy
boy, therefore he held back this knowledge of the beast from the boys knowing they would find it silly
and push it aside. When Golding says a human at once heroic and sick it is an example of how
someone could be so good but have that inner evil within themselves. Jack was once seen as heroic for
supplying the group with meat from a pig but later he began to sicken, becoming too engulfed in
killing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nobody seems to listen to Piggy s intelligent ideas of how they should act on the island in order to
survive. When Jack began assembling his own group of boys, under his leadership, things began to
fall apart. Piggy is expressing his frustration towards the boys in the quote, Can t they see? Can t they
understand? Without the smoke signal we ll die here? Look at that! (Golding, page 139). Piggy, like
Simon, has always questioned if the beast could be deeper than a real being. Therefore, Piggy had a
greater fear of the boys abandoning the fire, than he did of the beast. The boys are being naive, going
after pigs and the beast instead of tending the fire, and Piggy realizes that. He is aware that the boys
don t see the importance in the fire signal as he and Ralph do. Abandoning the fire will lead to no
rescue and eventually death upon the island. This could be foreshadowing Piggy s death since the
group of savage boys end up killing

Beowulf And The Epic s Christian Identity
Beowulf and the Epic s Christian Identity
Composed in early eighth century by an unknown author the epic poem Beowulf, follows the exploits
of the protagonist of the same name. Originally composed orally by a tribe s scop, the epic of Beowulf
delivers insight on the lives and adventures of characters that lived in the sixth century. Although, the
tale of Beowulf was formulated during post Roman collapse by presumably pagan people; written
around seven hundred A.D., it is probable that a Christian monk transcribed the grand narrative
implanting Christian motifs and ideals into pagan Scandinavian culture. Therefore, the result of this
concoction is a blended storyline infused with religious imagery and allusion along with traditional
Nordic beliefs of war and honor. The tale, and arguably, the tragedy of Beowulf illustrate the conflict
between the Pagan elements and Christian tenets, as aspects of both are present in the epic. The
underlying Christian and Pagan values in Beowulf illustrate the iniquity of mankind and its eventual
downfall through allusion to god, symbolism, and vices and virtues of warrior man.
Firstly, Hrothgar s monologue foreshadows the climax and tragedy of man; moreover, Hrothgar s
speech illuminates the end of both warrior and king. For example, after the battle in which Grendel is
defeated, Hrothgar say, First and foremost, let the Almighty father be thanked for this sight. I suffered
a long harrowing by Grendel. But the Heavenly Shepard can work His

variables. PROCEDURE Participants were given an informed consent. Random numbers were given
to each participant and were randomly placed in one of the three groups: positive humor, avoidant
humor, and control (somatic features). The manipulation for this study was to prime each group
differently before taking the questionnaires. The positive humor group was asked to think of a moment

avoidant humor group was asked to think of a moment when their spouse used avoidant humor, humor
that is used to avoid conflict or change the topic. The control group was then asked to think of their

All Men Are Not Created Equal Summary
As a woman I have always thought that all men were superior to women in a society viewpoint. Black
men superior to black women, Hispanic men superior to Hispanic women, and of course, white men
superior to, well, all women, especially women of color, and men of color. However, when reading the
article All Men Are Not Created Equal I had realized that Asian men are significantly inferior to Asian
women in western society. I never really thought about the imbalance until just today, reading the
article despite having always seen it in my day to day life. I really enjoyed how the author, Yen Le
Espiritu, focused on the historical reason as to why Asian women are seen as more valuable in western
society than Asian men. I, of course, had learned about Chinese and Japanese immigration and the
Japanese internment in my high school history class, but I was never taught the societal and family
issues that these events had sparked. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the breadwinner of the household, like their white counterparts. It was especially interesting to me
how these two articles overlapped into a particularly engaging observation of not only the social issues
of men, but specifically the immense social issues of Asian men. However, one thing I would have
wanted the author of All Men Are Not Created Equal to elaborate on would be current Asian male
status and social

Klebsiella Pneumoniae Research Paper
In modern times, Klebsiella pneumoniae is known to be a tenacious bacteria, labeled by many as a
Superbug . It was noted in the year 1882 and eventually named after Dr. Edwin Klebs; genus
Klebsiella. Found in many animal species, including humans, K. pneumoniae resides in the intestines,
skin, mouth and is considered part of the normal flora. In our world wide environment, it may be
found in soil and on vegetables, giving it easy access to humans. As an organism of opportunity, K.
pneumoniae is able to survive and multiply in a variety of conditions. It is benign, perhaps helpful to
animals when in the intestines, it is harmful when it infects other areas of the body. In humans, the
lungs and the bladder are the two typical infection sites and are the most detrimental. Typically, the

Traditional Methods And Styles Of Leadership Styles
Today there are a lot of organizations that are consistently changing their leadership styles to motivate
their teammates. Traditional methods and styles of leadership must change to meet the changing
environment (Sims, 2002, p.242). As a leader you must use the best leadership style that will work
best for you that will in due time work in the better interest of the company. You must learn to use
different styles because different situations call for different actions. Choosing the right type of style,
at the right time, in the right situation makes a good leader. With each style you have to have good
communication skills so the leader can communicate with the group and of course people outside of
the group. This requires listening, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This style is not about bossing the crew around it s about managing to them how to run the company
properly and successfully. It is best used for employees who don t know their job well or for new
employees who don t know their job at all. This style will make it better on the employee because they
will receive coaching and they will better perfect their job. Being a successful leader requires courage,
flexibility and capability to enhance an effective organization. You can use any of the styles that works
for you but you have to have great characteristics to go along with it. Authoritarian leaders tend to fail
their organization because they don t have any creativity or development towards their foundation.
Creativity involves more than one person it involves a team. Usually this type of leader do not accept
anyone s input but their own and then problems start to occur where the team begins to think the
leader is demanding, egotistical, or just plain out bossy. Using the authoritarian style doesn t make
leaders bossy but only using this style does. For authoritarian to work well it requires understanding,
abiding, and hard working individuals. This style would not work for members who want their voice
heard. The employee must be able to trust their employer and put all faith into them.

Form Follows Function Essay
Louis Henry Sullivan was the architect that created and promoted the paramount precept to 19th
century architectural design, form follows function. The idea behind the design philosophy was that,
structural and aesthetic considerations should be entirely subject to functionality it was met with both
approval and scepticism. (Boundless, 2017) Modern architecture is commonly defined by its
simplification of form. Early modern architecture began in the 20th century, with attempts to integrate,
the principles underlying architectural design with rapid technological advancement and the
modernization of society. (Boundless, 2017)

(Architect.architecture.sk, 2017) A Function needs a form in order to complete its objective. A form
without its function is just a good looking design on a piece of paper. Once a designer understands the
function of the piece, the additional parameters and the limitations created by the function, the
designer can then construct a form that supports the function, whilst acknowledging the principles of
design. The idea that form follows function is an original idea that is applied to architecture that states
that the shape of a structure is governed by its function. Indeed, until recently, form follows function
was practiced in the work of modern architecture, but soon began being applied to the design of
products that we use in our everyday lives, industrial design. In What is Form Follows Function, John
Spacey writes that, The principle is considered the driving principle of modern architecture and is
often applied in other areas of design such as product design. (Spacey, 2017) The design philosophy
that form follows function is evident and supported in both modernist architecture, The Wainwright

Mesopotamia vs. Indus River Valley Essay
Mesopotamia vs. Indus River Valley 9/26/12
Ancient Mesopotamia and the Indus River Valley civilization were two incredibly productive and
successful empires. While Mesopotamian politics were slightly less focused on religion and more on
other aspects, the two societies shared many social characteristics. They both had defined social
hierarchies, as well as similar views on gender roles. These traits are helpful in explaining the
similarities and differences between the two cultures. One of the key aspects of both Mesopotamia and
the Indus River Valley is their distinct social hierarchies. In the Indus River Valley, beginning with the
Aryans, a caste social system was used to keep citizens in their ... Show more content on

They did not have the right to divorce their husbands, and almost all women were uneducated. In
Mesopotamia, women were also treated very poorly. They were taught to attend to all of their husband
s needs, and could be punished severely if they did not do as their husband said. In Babylonia, during
Hammurabi s rule, there was even a law that stated that if a woman did not obey her husband or was
unfaithful to him in any way, he was legally allowed to throw her in the river, ultimately drowning her.
While Mesopotamian and the Indus River Valley were alike in their social characteristics, their
political views differed slightly. Records from the Indus civilizations have yet to fully been translated,
and therefore not much is known in the way of Indus political structure. What most historians assume
is that it was broken into city states with a common ruler, which is the way that Mesopotamia was
governed as well. Despite this similarity, the Indus government was more focused on religious aspects
than Mesopotamian government was. This can be deduced by the fact that Indus rulers were always
priest kings, while the highest status in Mesopotamia was achieved first by the king, and then by the
priests. These kings were also usually the head of the military, while the priests ran schools,
distributed land, were considered doctors, and were in charge of religion. Kings and

Picture Bride Essay
Immigrants arriving in America for their first time are initially devastated at their new lives and realize
their golden lives were simply fantasies and dreams of an ideal life in America. Immigrants from
foreign countries, including those mentioned in Uchida s Picture Bride, faced countless problems and
hardships, including a sense of disillusionment and disappointment. Furthermore, immigrants and
picture brides faced racial discrimination not only from white men, but the United States government,
as well. Immigrants were plagued with economic hardships lived in deplorable living conditions.

her husband s lies. She, like many picture brides and immigrants, expected too much of a new life, and
when she discovers the way things really are, she feels deceived and dismayed. Accepting the truth
and the reality of their new lives is a part of an immigrant s experience in moving to America and is a
crucial part in shaping their attitudes in their new lives.
Once an immigrant becomes situated with their new life styles, the foreign immigrants are introduced
to a sense of hatred and discrimination omnipresent in society. Many Americans and white men were
not welcoming towards alien immigrants and expressed a great deal of discrimination and hatred.
Immigrants and their families realized they had to learn to accept this hatred if they wanted to live in
America, and eventually taught themselves to be tolerant towards discrimination, without knowing a
motif behind a white man s disgust towards immigrants. Hana was able to accept the discrimination
and eventually passed down her tolerance and acceptance down to, her daughter, Mary, who learn to

Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light. . This

The Theory of Knowledge
Theory of Knowledge
5. The historian s task is to understand the past; the human scientist by contrast, is looking to change
the future. To what extent is this true in these areas of knowledge?
Life is too short for any individual to make every mistake. We use history to learn where we come
from and what caused events of the past to occur. It is important for us to have a strong and in depth
understanding of what caused events such as the Renaissance all the way up to World War Two.
Creating this strong in depth understanding of the past helps form a guide to make our future better.
Human Science seeks the functionality of the human mind in order to reason why people act the way
they do. These scientists find ways the mind works in order to avoid or coup with undesirable traits of
our psyche. Both History and Human Science, even though completely different fields, use reason and
emotion to gain knowledge of their areas of study. This leads us to the question To what extent is the
knowledge acquired by an Historian more or less reliable than the knowledge gained through reason
and emotion in the sciences? .
Historians attempt to identify what incidents and what kind of people changed the course of human
history. Inquiring what caused those incidents to occur? What made people act like the way they did
and why? Their studies observe both pleasant and cruel things of the past. Once able to recognize what
produced a good or a bad event or maybe even a person in

Foremost among them was a former prisoner who had served nearly seventeen years behind bars. This
consultant made us aware of what it was like to be a prisoner. He also introduced us to a number of
other ex convicts and correctional personnel during an earlier Stanford summer school class we co
taught on The Psychology of Imprisonment. Our prison was constructed by boarding up each end of a
corridor in the basement of Stanford s Psychology Department building. That corridor was The Yard
and was the only outside place where prisoners were allowed to walk, eat, or exercise, except to go to
the toilet down the hallway (which prisoners did blindfolded so as not to know the way out of the
prison). To create prison cells, we took the doors off some laboratory rooms and replaced them with
specially made doors with steel bars and cell numbers.
At one end of the hall was a small opening through which we could videotape and record the events
that occurred. On the side of the corridor opposite the cells was a small closet which became The
Hole, or solitary confinement. It was dark and very confining, about two feet wide and two feet deep,
but tall enough that a bad prisoner could stand up. An intercom system allowed us to secretly bug the
cells to monitor what the prisoners discussed, and also to make public announcements to the prisoners.

The Benefits of Extracurricular Activities for Students...
It is important for adolescents to participate in extracurricular activities. Student who participate in
these activities improve their academic scores and social life. Extracurricular activities can also help
reduce many peer pressure related problems. They enrich the lives of the students, their families and
our communities. These activities create well rounded children who learn what their interests and
talents are because they have been exposed to such opportunities (Extracurricular Activities,
Blogadmin). For most adolescents extracurricular activities should be required among what they do
outside of school. What are extracurricular activities? Extracurricular activities are those sponsored by

Many activities also require a minimum grade point average (GPA) to join (Dowshen). This
requirement is a boost for most of the students to excel in school so they can participate in these
activities. Although extracurricular activities take up a lot of time they are worth the time that a
student puts into it (Extracurricular Activities). So why are extracurricular activities important?
Extracurricular activities shape how a person acts within him or herself, in the community, and their
performance in school. Schools should highly encourage every student to be in some type of activity
(Hollrah). Although extracurricular activities can help improve students academics, they can also have
a bad effect on how grades turn out. Extracurricular activities take time, and this can affect on how
much time the student has to complete home work or study (Wells). This can lead to a student doing
poorly on tests and in the big run, failing the class which will hurt the student college applications. If a
student that is involved in a sport is badly injured, this can affect the student because he or she is
missing school, and then all the work that is missed will have to be made up. Stress is also a big factor
that is put together with extracurricular activities. Stress can affect how the child does in school; if a
student is stressed out, they can get sick. Being sick requires the child to stay home and then they will

different yet almost identical in difficulty puzzles over the course of two months, vs. a control group
who have no aid in regard to scaffolding. The puzzles will be just outside the child s age range (ex.
For children 6 8) with the children all being 5.) Research into scaffolding is relevant to child

The Nature Of Human Nature In King Lear
Shakespeare s King Lear questions the inherent nature of human nature: is it good or bad?
Shakespeare argues that human nature, or general characteristics considered to be shared by all
humans, is driven by love, secrecy, betrayal, and ignorance. Therefore, Lear s story maintains that
human nature is evil and when one does do good it is often only because of a realization of the malice
of his or her human nature. Although there are a few purely good characters in Lear, they end up being
overcome by evil by unjust banishment or violent death and while in the end, order restores itself,
good has to first accept defeat by evil. Shakespeare uses the power and control of his villains to stress
the malevolence of human nature. The first force of wickedness that Lear examines is love. Beginning
with the first scene, the story shows how twisted and fake love can be when Lear cannot recognize
that his daughter, Cordelia, loves him the most. Cordelia tells him I love you according to my bond, no
more nor less, and although the reader realizes this is the most honest form of love, Lear dismisses it
as inadequate and kicks his closest daughter out of his kingdom (1.1.102). Lear doesn t understand
that there is more to love than verbal expression, which shows the philosophy of many of the evil
characters in the play: that love only consists of loyalty and honesty. Edmund, a source of evil in the
play, says it is his hand, my lord, but I hope his heart is not in the contents, in reference to a fake letter
in which his brother, Edgar, plots to kill their father (1.2.71). This shows that he wants his father to
believe love is equated with loyalty and honesty. While love has a slightly different meaning for each
character, it s obvious that Edmund doesn t really believe that love means loyalty and honesty because
later in the play he says to both these sisters have I sworn my love, each jealous of the other as the
stung are of the adder, claiming he loves both Regan and Goneril, while he still lies to each one about
the other (5.1.63). Here, Edmund s natural instinct to misinterpret love is what causes wickedness to
form. Next, Shakespeare investigates the corruption caused by honesty and secrecy. Most

How Did The Allies Lose Gallipoli
The Gallipoli Campaign (April 1915 January 1916) might have been the biggest failure of the allies in
WW1. The allied goal of freeing the Gallipoli Strait to allow ships to Russia in the winter and their
goal knocking the Ottomans out of the war by reaching Constantinople was never achieved. They had
failed because the Allies severely underestimated the Ottomans, the Allied troops were dropped off at
the wrong place, the Allies were not ready to attack and the Allies made many critical mistakes.
The Allies had planned that they would quickly capture the Gallipoli peninsula without much
resistance from the Central Powers. However; by the time that the Allied troops had arrived in
Gallipoli, the Ottomans had already created all the defences and trenches they needed and had already

Analysis Of A Christmas Story The Movie
A Christmas Story the Musical The movie A Christmas Story has always been a family favorite and
tradition, so when the opportunity came up to go and see it as a theater production, my mom and I
knew that is exactly what we wanted to see. On December 2nd, my mom and I spent the day together
by getting dinner, going shopping, and ending the night with a play. A Christmas Story the Musical
was produced by the Morgantown Theatre Company and directed by Hillary Phillips, both whom did
an outstanding job making sure everything was perfect from beginning to end. When I was in
elementary school every year we would go to a play produced by the same company, so going back as
a sophomore in college brought back fun childhood memories, as did seeing my childhood favorite
Christmas movie on stage. I personally believe that this production was directed, preformed, and
thought out extremely well with an overall experience of excitement, laughter, and the Christmas
spirit! The relationship and energy that the audience had towards the performance made a large impact
on my enjoyment of the play. Since A Christmas Story is such a popular movie, hundreds of people
came out and packed the theatre! The doors to the theatre did not open until a half hour before, so
there was a large line that wrapped around the building, despite it being cold people were very upbeat
and excited; many families had on matching Christmas sweaters, children worse their pajamas, and

The Achievement Gap Problem
Is it possible for the achievement gap to be solved? The achievement gap is the difference in test
scores between different groups of students. In the article, the students are grouped based on ethnicity,
family history, and economic background. Educational facilities have been attempting to close the gap
for the past couple years, but the problem still persists. Ravitch is the author of the article and has put
a large quantity of time towards the achievement gap issue. She has researched and found that the
achievement gap starts before the education starts. Also, there has been improvement, but the progress
is not visible to the common person. Ravitch, along with others concerned about the gap have
researched and proposed ideas to solve the problem, but there has yet to be an idea to completely close
it. The issue surrounding the achievement gap is complicated and important due to many different
reasons. These reasons include the problem being ignored, lack of substantial progress, and the fact
that new ideas are hard to form. Diane Ravitch, the author of The Facts About the Achievement Gap
has proven through research that the achievement gap is caused by ethnicity, family history, and
economic background which makes it nearly impossible to close the gap completely. Due to the fact
that the achievement gap forms before education begins, it is extremely difficult to eliminate the gap.
Not only is this a factor, but another reason to why the achievement gap persists

Trip To Ecuador Research Paper
The most impactful event in my life so far was the two week service trip I took to Ecuador with
Renbrook in june of 2015. It was a two week service trip in which we would be helping at medical
clinics and building wheelchair ramps for a school for disabled kids. I went into the trip having no
idea how much of an impact it would have on my life, and I definitely had no idea that I would create
strong bonds with people I had never even met. I came out of this trip a different person, a better
person.
The night before we left for ecuador we were invited to spend the night at Renbrook. That night was
the beginning to our bonding, we got pizza and watched a movie and everyone had a great time. Even
though we had an early morning flight the next day, we still stayed up until 12 because we were
having so much fun. The next morning was rough we had to wake up at 4 to drive to John F. Kennedy
airport. We took two flights one to Columbia and then one to Ecuador. When we got to ecuador we
first went to our hotel a small one but very nice considering we were in a third world country. For the
next week we would be bonding, going on bike rides, walking in caves, and white water rafting. The
first week was so fun and I learned so much about everyone on the trip including some new things
about myself. After the first week was over I was completely immersed in the ecuadorian culture and

Indoor Tanning Creams
There are many indoor tanners these days, and so it stands to reason that a lot of them use an indoor
tanning lotion. The reason for these products is so a person can get a brilliant color as quickly as
possible. And, this is also helpful as someone can get the shade he or she wants, without spending too
much time to get it.
This cream works a bit different from those outdoor lotions. Outdoor products are used so a person
can block those UV rays from their skin while they are playing in nature, yet still get some color. This
product, on the other hand, is formulated to encourage rapid color gain for the person who is tanning

the good news is that they can be found for purchase several places. One of the easiest ways to find
them is by going to a local salon. Although it s true that someone will usually have to pay retail, the
spas and salons have a greater selection than other stores that may carry them.
A really smart way to find these tanning items is by checking one s local beauty supply shop. Not only
can a person find those things there that he or she may not be able to find elsewhere, but that

Team Reflection Paper
Introduction When I was a freshman in high school, I had one of my worst group experiences within
my entire educational career. I was assigned a project in my World History course and was assigned to
a group with one of my best friends and two boys who were known for their lack of goals in school. I
wouldn t call this a team project because, due to the situation, it s obvious that we were not a team. It
was clear to my friend and I that this was going to be a tough process because we knew the history
that these two boys had with contributing to the work needed by each teammate. Both boys were well
known to the teachers as well because they were two of the high school s biggest troublemakers. One
would assume the situation could have been helped, but that is not that case. We began our project and
noticed that the boys preferred to talk about things that did not matter to the assignment and not to
begin working on their half of the project. In an attempt to bring their attention back to the task at
hand, we tried many things over one class period. First, we tried multiple times, just telling the boys
that we needed to get our work done, which failed every time and resulted in arguments. Then, we
decided to tell our teacher that we felt the boys were not willing to participate and were worried that
their disregard for the class and our team s goals would affect our individual grades for the project.

Satire And Corruption In Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales
Chaucer uses satirization in the descriptions of the characters in the General Prologue of The
Canterbury Tales to reveal the corruption in the Church that was widespread in society during the 14th
century. Manny members of the church used their positions for the personal gain of themselves. This
can be seen in the Prologue when he describes these characters.
Chaucer shows us through the satirization of several characters, the corruptness of the church of
England and the lust/sexual corruption through the common people. Chaucer satirized several
characters to show the reader that they aren t what they appear and to develop the characters through
complex character development. By using satire, Chaucer depicts certain characters in a much ...

In the Prologue and her tale we get to see the Wife of Baths views and we get to see how she is as a
person. She has plenty of experience in the art of virginity, marriage and love because she s been
married five times and knows that her experience is better than the knowledge from books. She isn t a
traditional woman of that time, she s not ashamed of her actions or the fact she s been married more
than the usual. She takes her experience with all of the men she s been with more serious than the
things people say that are inexperienced in love. Geoffrey Chaucer portrays the Wife of Bath as a
promiscuous whore, crude, and hypocritical. On the other hand she is comical, fearless, and radical.
She is proud of everything she s done in her life and the fact that she has had five husbands does not
embarrass her or shame her in any way. She believes in her way of living and thoroughly supports it
with verses from the bible. That is satirical because she is mocking women s repression with a piece of
literature that has been used by men for centuries to justify women s oppression. She questions the
fact that the bible talks about women, staying a virgin and only marrying once but realizes, that many
men in the bible had multiple wives and marriages. ...Lamech and his bigamye? I woot wel Abroaham
was an holy man, And Jacob eek, as fer as evere I can, And eech of hadde wives mo than two, And
many another holy man also. (118) Chaucer uses irony and satire to questions the church s
maltreatment of women by giving the Wife of Bath the opportunity to speak freely about marriage, sex
and the desires of women. Chaucer uses complex character development to describe the Wife of Bath
as a gap toothed, promiscuous, witty, voluptuous woman who boasts about the fact she lies, cheats,
and deceives her husbands, she shows no remorse for the men she treats this way. Yet, she is a strong
woman

  • 3. Reflection On Race And Ethnicity I am creative, short, determined, competitive, and a dyslexic Hispanic female. Society has shown us that a large part of who we are in the United States focuses on our ethnicity and race. For every important document, we have to fill out a form asking us about our race/ethnicity. We can say that we are one race but we actually all are multiple races. Growing up I knew that I was Hispanic but I really didn t feel like I was treated differently. I feel like because I had the lighter skin I was not viewed necessarily as a Mexican. There were a few times that I was made fun of for being Hispanic, the largest problem that I faced was people thinking that I spoke Spanish. On My mother s side, I am 6th generation Coloradan with ties to México and on my father s side, I am a third generation American with ties to Spain and México. Defining yourself can always be a struggle because not everyone defines you the way that you define yourself. Growing up my family told me stories about how they were made fun of or picked on because of their skin color and the fact that they spoke Spanish. My grandfather started a roofing company in North Denver as he worked more and made more money he moved to the Italian part of town where my mother and her siblings were called coconuts and Oreos because they were dark on the outside but they acted differently compared to other Hispanics. My grandmother told me about how people would tell her not to speak Spanish because she was an American and that she was in America so she needed to speak English. This was difficult for Hispanic people because they were having to lose part of their culture and part of their identity. My grandmother always would tell me about how it was harder for her to attend school because she would get into trouble if she acted differently. My grandmother on my father s side of the family had a more sheltered life where she was not racially discriminated against because she was part of the Spanish consulate. • 4. Dartmouth College Vs. Woodward Dartmouth College v. Woodward (1819) Living in the 1800 s was not an easy task. This was the time of child labor and little to no education for kids. The time of having to walk 2 3 miles anywhere and making sure the crops were well enough to sell in the markets. The time of Westward Expansion and the genocide of Native Americans. Eleazar Wheelock, a Puritan minister from Columbia, CT was the one who founded Dartmouth. He initially established the school to train Native Americans as Christian missionaries. His inspiration for the school first came about due to his relationship with a Mohegan Indian Samson Occom. The name of the school was to be Moor s Indian Charity School and was officially established in 1755. It was somewhat successful, but they still needed more funding in order to maintain the schools operations. Wheelock and Occom decided to go to England in 1766 to raise money for the school. Once they raised enough, they made a trust to help the school. The Charity School finally had enough financial support to keep going. But Wheelock had trouble recruiting Native Americans to attend the institution due to the location being far away from the tribal territories. He decided to relocate the school to Hanover, in the Province of New Hampshire. Following the relocation, it was difficult to find resources and secure a charter. Luckily, the Royal Governor of New Hampshire, John Wentworth, provided the land that Dartmouth would be built on and issued a charter in the name ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although how did sounds start and what were some major advancements in the world of sound cinema? The introduction of sound to cinema began by a process known as Phonofilm, created by a man named Lee de Forest and Theodore Case in 1923. The Phonofilm, which recorded synchronized sound directly onto film, was used to record a variety of entertainment including vaudeville acts, musical numbers, political speeches and opera singers. Unfortunately, this sound film didn t last long because it was overshadowed by the sound on disc, later named the Vitaphone. The Vitaphone was developed by Western Electrics Bell Laboratories and quickly acquired by Warner Bros Company in April of 1925. The Warner Brothers film Don Juan, directed by Alan Crosland, which utilized the first system with synchronized music score and sound effects, first showcased the Vitaphone. Using the Vitaphone, Warner Brothers went on to produce over 100 short films during the mid 1920 s. In 1927, The Jazz Singer was released, which was essentially a silent picture with Vitaphone score and the occasional episodes of synchronized singing and speech. We still don t know much about them and there will always be conspiracies about them, but we still need to find more information about them to understand more. Black holes are developed when a star s core collapses and then mass is getting eaten by the core which leads to the star to die in a supernova explosion. This can go two ways, one is that the star turns into a neutron star, and the second is it turns into a black hole but only if the star is massive enough. It utilizes discovery and scientific thinking process to explore and learn knowledge and skills. Learning by doing is the new efficient method in teaching science. For kindergarten, this method leads to better understanding of science concepts and builds skills that children will use in future life .What a child can do with assistance now, they can later do on their own (Vygotsky, 1978). John Dewey (1916) stated that children must be engaged in an active quest for learning and new ideas. Inquiry is important in educating kindergarteners because it not only keeps them interested in lessons but also helps them retain more information when performing exploration and investigation. Children are naturally motivated to learn and actively seek out information to help their understanding (Piaget, 1950).The success of students who participate in hands on inquiry activities suggests that if students have first hands experience with science, concepts are easier to understand and apply and students are generally more favorable to science and have better understanding of the nature of science .Within a conceptual framework, inquiry learning and active learner involvement can lead to important outcomes in the classroom. • 13. Beowulf And The Epic s Christian Identity Beowulf and the Epic s Christian Identity Composed in early eighth century by an unknown author the epic poem Beowulf, follows the exploits of the protagonist of the same name. Originally composed orally by a tribe s scop, the epic of Beowulf delivers insight on the lives and adventures of characters that lived in the sixth century. Although, the tale of Beowulf was formulated during post Roman collapse by presumably pagan people; written around seven hundred A.D., it is probable that a Christian monk transcribed the grand narrative implanting Christian motifs and ideals into pagan Scandinavian culture. Therefore, the result of this concoction is a blended storyline infused with religious imagery and allusion along with traditional Nordic beliefs of war and honor. The tale, and arguably, the tragedy of Beowulf illustrate the conflict between the Pagan elements and Christian tenets, as aspects of both are present in the epic. The underlying Christian and Pagan values in Beowulf illustrate the iniquity of mankind and its eventual downfall through allusion to god, symbolism, and vices and virtues of warrior man. Firstly, Hrothgar s monologue foreshadows the climax and tragedy of man; moreover, Hrothgar s speech illuminates the end of both warrior and king. • 26. The Theory of Knowledge Theory of Knowledge 5. The historian s task is to understand the past; the human scientist by contrast, is looking to change the future. To what extent is this true in these areas of knowledge? Life is too short for any individual to make every mistake. We use history to learn where we come from and what caused events of the past to occur. It is important for us to have a strong and in depth understanding of what caused events such as the Renaissance all the way up to World War Two. Creating this strong in depth understanding of the past helps form a guide to make our future better. Human Science seeks the functionality of the human mind in order to reason why people act the way they do. These scientists find ways the mind works in order to avoid or coup with undesirable traits of our psyche. Both History and Human Science, even though completely different fields, use reason and emotion to gain knowledge of their areas of study. This leads us to the question To what extent is the knowledge acquired by an Historian more or less reliable than the knowledge gained through reason and emotion in the sciences? . Historians attempt to identify what incidents and what kind of people changed the course of human history. Inquiring what caused those incidents to occur? What made people act like the way they did and why? Their studies observe both pleasant and cruel things of the past. Foremost among them was a former prisoner who had served nearly seventeen years behind bars. This consultant made us aware of what it was like to be a prisoner. He also introduced us to a number of other ex convicts and correctional personnel during an earlier Stanford summer school class we co taught on The Psychology of Imprisonment. Our prison was constructed by boarding up each end of a corridor in the basement of Stanford s Psychology Department building. That corridor was The Yard and was the only outside place where prisoners were allowed to walk, eat, or exercise, except to go to the toilet down the hallway (which prisoners did blindfolded so as not to know the way out of the prison). To create prison cells, we took the doors off some laboratory rooms and replaced them with specially made doors with steel bars and cell numbers. At one end of the hall was a small opening through which we could videotape and record the events that occurred. On the side of the corridor opposite the cells was a small closet which became The Hole, or solitary confinement. It was dark and very confining, about two feet wide and two feet deep, but tall enough that a bad prisoner could stand up. An intercom system allowed us to secretly bug the cells to monitor what the prisoners discussed, and also to make public announcements to the prisoners. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many activities also require a minimum grade point average (GPA) to join (Dowshen). This requirement is a boost for most of the students to excel in school so they can participate in these activities. Although extracurricular activities take up a lot of time they are worth the time that a student puts into it (Extracurricular Activities). So why are extracurricular activities important? Extracurricular activities shape how a person acts within him or herself, in the community, and their performance in school. Schools should highly encourage every student to be in some type of activity (Hollrah). Although extracurricular activities can help improve students academics, they can also have a bad effect on how grades turn out. Extracurricular activities take time, and this can affect on how much time the student has to complete home work or study (Wells). This can lead to a student doing poorly on tests and in the big run, failing the class which will hurt the student college applications. If a student that is involved in a sport is badly injured, this can affect the student because he or she is missing school, and then all the work that is missed will have to be made up. • 31. The Nature Of Human Nature In King Lear Shakespeare s King Lear questions the inherent nature of human nature: is it good or bad? Shakespeare argues that human nature, or general characteristics considered to be shared by all humans, is driven by love, secrecy, betrayal, and ignorance. Therefore, Lear s story maintains that human nature is evil and when one does do good it is often only because of a realization of the malice of his or her human nature. Although there are a few purely good characters in Lear, they end up being overcome by evil by unjust banishment or violent death and while in the end, order restores itself, good has to first accept defeat by evil. Shakespeare uses the power and control of his villains to stress the malevolence of human nature. The first force of wickedness that Lear examines is love. Beginning with the first scene, the story shows how twisted and fake love can be when Lear cannot recognize that his daughter, Cordelia, loves him the most. Cordelia tells him I love you according to my bond, no more nor less, and although the reader realizes this is the most honest form of love, Lear dismisses it as inadequate and kicks his closest daughter out of his kingdom (1.1.102). Lear doesn t understand that there is more to love than verbal expression, which shows the philosophy of many of the evil characters in the play: that love only consists of loyalty and honesty. Edmund, a source of evil in the play, says it is his hand, my lord, but I hope his heart is not in the contents, in reference to a fake letter in which his brother, Edgar, plots to kill their father (1.2.71). This shows that he wants his father to believe love is equated with loyalty and honesty. While love has a slightly different meaning for each character, it s obvious that Edmund doesn t really believe that love means loyalty and honesty because later in the play he says to both these sisters have I sworn my love, each jealous of the other as the stung are of the adder, claiming he loves both Regan and Goneril, while he still lies to each one about the other (5.1.63). Here, Edmund s natural instinct to misinterpret love is what causes wickedness to form. Next, Shakespeare investigates the corruption caused by honesty and secrecy. Most ... Analysis Of A Christmas Story The Movie A Christmas Story the Musical The movie A Christmas Story has always been a family favorite and tradition, so when the opportunity came up to go and see it as a theater production, my mom and I knew that is exactly what we wanted to see. A Christmas Story the Musical was produced by the Morgantown Theatre Company and directed by Hillary Phillips, both whom did an outstanding job making sure everything was perfect from beginning to end. When I was in elementary school every year we would go to a play produced by the same company, so going back as a sophomore in college brought back fun childhood memories, as did seeing my childhood favorite Christmas movie on stage. I personally believe that this production was directed, preformed, and thought out extremely well with an overall experience of excitement, laughter, and the Christmas spirit! The relationship and energy that the audience had towards the performance made a large impact on my enjoyment of the play. Since A Christmas Story is such a popular movie, hundreds of people came out and packed the theatre! Educational facilities have been attempting to close the gap for the past couple years, but the problem still persists. Also, there has been improvement, but the progress is not visible to the common person. Ravitch, along with others concerned about the gap have researched and proposed ideas to solve the problem, but there has yet to be an idea to completely close it. The issue surrounding the achievement gap is complicated and important due to many different reasons. These reasons include the problem being ignored, lack of substantial progress, and the fact that new ideas are hard to form. Diane Ravitch, the author of The Facts About the Achievement Gap has proven through research that the achievement gap is caused by ethnicity, family history, and economic background which makes it nearly impossible to close the gap completely. I wouldn t call this a team project because, due to the situation, it s obvious that we were not a team. It was clear to my friend and I that this was going to be a tough process because we knew the history that these two boys had with contributing to the work needed by each teammate. Both boys were well known to the teachers as well because they were two of the high school s biggest troublemakers. One would assume the situation could have been helped, but that is not that case. We began our project and noticed that the boys preferred to talk about things that did not matter to the assignment and not to begin working on their half of the project. In an attempt to bring their attention back to the task at hand, we tried many things over one class period. First, we tried multiple times, just telling the boys that we needed to get our work done, which failed every time and resulted in arguments.
